e are living longer, so staying healthy is an important priority. Our new Vitality@Vivalon Healthy Aging Program encompasses so many of the elements that impact our health. It also takes advantage of the rich resources Vivalon offers through our array of regular programming. Joanne Halliday, Vivalon’s Director of Healthy Aging explained, “The program evolved with the support of Dominican University and Lucy Chen, Dominican University Occupational Therapy Graduate Student. The elements were developed applying much of her knowledge of evidence-based assessments and group education for topics such as Physical Activity, Cognition, Social Engagement, Sleep, and Nutrition to contribute to a multifaceted curriculum focusing on a different topic each week.” Halliday added that the 8-week program has the added advantage of integrating closely with many of Vivalon’s classes and services. Week one introduces the overall program and encourages participants to assess their current health status and to explore what they hope to learn from the program. Week two focuses on the various

aspects of social engagement, the health impacts of loneliness and the difference between loneliness and isolation. Participants will explore what increased connections to a community can provide, how social connections can improve mental health and the value of feeling a sense of purpose in life. Week three will provide a deeper dive into aspects of physical activity, its impact on balance, flexibility and bone density. Who doesn’t want to remain independent for as long as possible? Safety from falls is a great reason to get into an exercise class. Following a focus on physical activity, week four looks at the importance of continuing to exercise our minds. Physical activity itself can have a positive impact and using our minds to continue to learn and challenge ourselves can go a long way in bolstering our cognitive abilities. Proper nutrition and the importance of getting enough sleep are covered in weeks five and six, while week seven focuses on spirituality. That leaves week eight for the closing session, goal setting and a celebration for taking steps to achieve a healthy life as you age! We hope you’ll join us!

Thank you! Vivalon was once again honored by Ed Rossi’s Marin Subaru Dealership by naming us the Hometown Charity for Subaru’s Share the Love event.

lanning ahead will give you and your loved ones the security of knowing your future wishes. This can free you to devote the present to living a full and inspired life. With that in mind, I am pleased to announce two upcoming presentations in Vivalon’s Estate Planning Series, sponsored by Valley Memorial Park Cemetery and Funeral Home.

12

1) The 5 Most Common Questions About Estate Planning Join Elizabeth Krivatsy, an Estate Planning and Elder Law attorney, for an engaging presentation that will answer many common questions. With more than 20 years’ experience helping clients in the Bay Area, Elizabeth brings expertise, the gift of storytelling, and a passion to help people protect their families, their assets, and their values in their estate plans. The first presentation will be hosted virtually, through Zoom on Wednesday, June 23, at 4:00pm. To register, call 415-456-9062 x191. 2) Navigating Caregiving Options in Marin We are living longer, healthier lives but many of us also face complex chronic health issues. You will most likely have to address a complex, confusing and wide-reaching set of needs for yourself and/or your loved ones as you write the final chapters of your life. Further complicating this challenge are the array of choices one is entitled to make at the

end of life. Homecare, hospice, home health…what do each of these services provide and how do you know which you or your loved one needs or qualifies for? Please join Peter Rubens, owner of At Home Caregivers to learn about your options. With nearly 18 years owning and operating a homecare agency in Marin, Peter will share his advice, expertise, and anecdotes from situations he frequently sees. The presentation will be in person at the Vivalon Healthy Aging Center (formerly Whistlestop) 930 Tamalpais Ave, San Rafael AND on Zoom, Wednesday, July 28 at 4:00pm. To register, call 415-456-9062 x191. As you consider your options, should you decide to support favorite charities, I am happy to discuss how to leave a legacy gift for Vivalon to help us continue our good work. Please contact me if you have questions or would like to discuss options. I can be reached at yroberts@vivalon.org or 415-295-0578.

Selma Lewis, PhD, MFT Sees Inspiration All Around Her what holds you back.” Dr. Lewis said, “You have to dig to find resources within yourself. And if that is not a ‘muscle’ you developed as a child or into adulthood, you need to start at day one, as though you are training that muscle for a marathon. You wouldn’t go out and run six miles with no training. You may start by running a block and then walk for a while before running again. But often, people don’t know how to apply that to a ‘resilience muscle’, to get over big life-changing hurdles.” She recommends paying attention to what interests you. Is it gardening? Home design? Whether you choose to volunteer at a community garden or take landscaping classes to gain certification to consult, either can lead to a renewed sense of satisfaction. Knowing what interests you, like writing, painting or yoga practice, and deciding to share that skill by volunteering or starting a business can contribute to a more fulfilling life. She also suggests that we look around us for people living inspired lives into their 70s and 80s, like some actors and musicians. She added, “Forbes just profiled 50 women over 50, living lives where success has no age limit. Some use retirement to transition to a second career. Many people

in their 50s, 60s, and 70s simply continue working at really interesting jobs. Just look at some people in government today. There are many in their 70s and some in their 80s who are functioning at a very high level and are performing well. It is inspiring for all of us because that is the new model of humanity.” Dr. Lewis is launching a podcast on women and aging, “Isn’t it Enough?” with her friend and colleague, Physical Therapist, Trina Mann, DPT,

e are living longer, healthier lives, which gives us a different mindset about the possibilities of what a career can do. Marin psychotherapist, Selma Lewis, PhD, MFT, has had her practice a long time. She is noticing people at younger ages exploring career changes. They hold fewer expectations that they will stay with one job or profession throughout their lives. Others, like her, are working well beyond retirement, or pursuing a passion if they do retire. To get through life’s challenges and changes, Dr. Lewis believes that we need at least a small network of people we can call upon and be willing to ask for help, not as though that is shameful, but as a natural gesture. For some that gesture does not come naturally. Instead, they are fearful and want to hide their insecurities. But talking out a problem or asking a friend or colleague to discuss a difficult issue can help you move through it. People like to feel helpful and often are flattered by being asked. “We can’t know everything and there are other people out there that can help,” Dr. Lewis continued. “There are many things that hold us back which most people don’t examine. A good therapist can also help you explore

GETTING AROUND

More Than a Free Ride

VIVALON CONNECTIONS JULY 2021

ivalon is proud of what our drivers accomplished since the beginning of the pandemic. Our transportation department, including Marin Access Paratransit and CarePool, delivered 75,400 rides. The CarePool program provides older adults with free rides to and from medical appointments. Nancy Geisse, Vivalon’s Chief Operating Officer, acknowledged the inspiring work CarePool Program Manager, Debbie Baldo, and her volunteer team accomplished, despite a significant drop in drivers. “Her team went from 56 active volunteer drivers pre-pandemic to only 18 volunteer drivers during the pandemic. Yet, they increased trips from 1,700 to 3,800 over the same period the previous year.” 54% of those trips were errands, a new service launched during the pandemic. CarePool also supported the Brown Bag Pantry with deliveries and the new Assisted Transportation in partnership with the County of Marin. “CarePool is so much more than a free ride,” said CarePool Manager Debbie Baldo. “We are not an app or a technology company. CarePool is a highly personalized service that is managed with a lot of attention and care. We form meaningful connections with the people we serve, and we look out for their wellbeing. There is no app on the market that can do that!” CarePool Volunteer Driver, Shelly Sharpe, agrees. She said, “I feel very fortunate to be able to do something to make somebody else’s life better. It’s so fulfilling. When I was younger, I liked to volunteer for places where I did not have to get involved or get close to people, like serving meals, or gardening, or cleanup days. Now that I’m retired, I feel like I make a much larger difference than in everything else I have done. I am making an ACTUAL, tangible difference. When my riders express their gratitude, it makes me feel grateful too, that I am able to help in such a meaningful way.” Erick Villalobos, General Manager of Transportation Services, added, “I’m so proud of our dedicated CarePool drivers! They really stepped up to help our clients in need during the pandemic and continue to this day. Many of our age 65+ drivers are so happy to be able to return to CarePool and kept in touch when they were temporarily ‘grounded’ to check in on our regular clients. It warms my heart to know how many people are dedicated to help our vulnerable population in our community! I really look forward to the opportunity to grow this program.” Now that Marin County is open again and people feel safer venturing out, the need for volunteer drivers is

growing. Older individuals who put off routine doctors’ visits are ready to schedule appointments and will need a way to get to those appointments. Debbie knows how important those rides can be. She meets with each and every new volunteer to onboard them, train them and get to know them. She processes thorough background checks, insurance verification and vehicle inspections for every driver to ensure that riders are safe. She often goes above and beyond to ensure clients get what they need. “I call every client that has an unfulfilled ride 2 business days prior to the requested ride date and send their pending requests to all drivers,” Debbie said. “I work very hard to fulfill each and every ride request, so we never have to let a rider down.” Interested in volunteering? Please call Debbie Baldo at 415-456-9062 x103 or email carepool@vivalon.org.

Inspiration is All Around Us! education (Ruth Simmons, 75, President, Prairie View A&M University), — the list goes on. Forbes plans to follow up their first 50 over 50 with, as they indicate, “three more iterations of this package over the course of the summer. We want to give credit to the women over 50 who are making an impact in law, policy and education; the women over 50 who are technological and artistic visionaries; and the women over 50 who are financial rainmakers.” They won’t lack for likely candidates. People living full lives into their 80s, and beyond, are all around us. We only recently lost Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who served on the Supreme Court until the age of 87. Dr. Anthony Fauci, 80, is a familiar spokesperson for the CDC, actors Dame Judy Dench and Anthony Hopkins have done some of their most memorable work after the age of 60 and are still going strong into their 80s, proving success has no age limit! If you are seeking inspiration, or greater connection join us for one of our classes or consider becoming a volunteer by calling Vivalon Guest Services at 415-456-9062. It isn’t too late to get started!

The publication received over 10,000 entries nationwide, touting the accomplishments women have made, after they reached the age of 50. In fact, many of the women were older and more than a few continue in exciting, lucrative, and meaningful endeavors into their 60s, 70s and 80s. They come from all walks of life and their careers touch on politics (Nancy Pelosi, 81, Kamala Harris, 56), consumer goods (Julie Wainwright, 64, luxury good consignment), sports (Kim Ng, 52 the first woman in Major League Baseball history to become a team’s General Manager), the auto industry (Aicha Evans, 52 CEO of autonomous vehicle company), science (Katalin Karikó, Biochemist and Senior VP, BioNTech), diplomacy (Madeleine Albright, 84, first female Secretary of State and now US Diplomat), law (Carmen Chang, 73, General Partner, New Enterprise Associates), banking (Anne Finucane, 68, Vice Chairman, Bank of America), venture capital (Tracy Chadwell, 55, 1843 Capital), media and now health and wellness (Arianna Huffington, 70),
