Ancient Lessons for a Hopeful Future BY KELLY KRUEGER THOMAS, VIVALON CONNECTIONS EDITOR

S

erena D’Arcy-Fisher knows a thing or two about finding hope in the middle of uncertainty. When her husband was diagnosed with Stage 2b melanoma in 2006, she learned to live with a future filled with unknowns. But her daily meditation practice and her work at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin County helped her learn the importance of mindfulness, of letting go of attachments, and of living in the present. “Mindfulness helps us understand where we are right now,” she says. “Our ego wants us to plan things

expectations and renew hope. “The COVID-19 virus has highlighted what we value most in life: family and social connections. As we start this new year still in safety mode, we can all help reduce stress by expressing kindness, patience, generosity and gratitude.” These practices have a ripple effect that goes out into the world beyond what we can see and help create more joy in you and around you.

out. People long for the past or worry about the future. But mindfulness and meditation help us release our attachments and desires, allowing us to live in and enjoy the present moment. This allows us to meet each moment fully as it arises.” It was the wisdom of the Buddha’s teachings that helped Serena and her husband remain grounded as his disease progressed to Stage 4 over the course of the next four years. Her practice helped her understand that even though her husband was ill, his life wasn’t defined by the illness. They could still do things together and enjoy life. “Most of all we felt gratitude for every day, which truly brought us into the present,” says Serena. Now, during these tough times of social isolation and uncertainty, Serena says that starting with a simple meditation practice of 10 -20 minutes every day can help anyone develop inner peace and ease. Neuroscience research confirms the many benefits of maintaining a regular meditation practice. And, there are thousands of years of wisdom behind it. The beginning of a new year is a great time to reset

e asked a few of our members to tell us their thoughts on 2020 and what they are looking forward to in the new year. Here’s what they said:

Ali Navarro

Marianne Shaw

“I’ve missed seeing friends who live far away, so I’m hoping we will all be able to finally spend time together next year. I also look forward to being able to enjoy travelling the world once again and lots of hiking will always be included for me. Most of all, I’m grateful to have good health, a wonderful partner, a comfortable home and our supportive community which will all be further enjoyed and appreciated in 2021.” — Ali Navarro

“Spending more time with good friends is at the top of my list for 2021, as we’ve all missed our family and friends. I’ve also learned to play the ukulele and will be expanding my song repertoire and playing this lovely music for friends. Of course, music and dancing go together, so I will continue enjoying our weekly line dancing sessions, a great way to keep fit and stay youthful.” — Marianne Shaw ”We all have a role to play to keep ourselves and others safe by wearing masks and following all the other guidelines. Going back to normal activities, especially being able to enjoy our favorite restaurants or dining with friends is also at the top of my list.” — Cyle Petrig

Thomas Simmons

“I’m looking forward to seeing and spending more time with my new grandson. During

this pandemic, I think we’ve all learned the importance and the value of our family and I look forward to spending time with family and friends in 2021. Also, I’ve taken up painting as a hobby, so I will enjoy doing more artwork, especially focused on watercolors. Having lots of free time has given all of us an opportunity to develop our creative talents.” — Thomas Simmons

ood and fellowship go hand in hand. That’s certainly the case with Vivalon’s Jackson Café. Our dedicated and award-winning culinary team, Chuck Ciaccio and Stacy Scott have made the café a home away from home. And with the pandemic, they have pivoted once again to bring the café to you. “When the pandemic hit, we had to close the café,” says Stacy. “So we did what other restaurants did, providing meals to-go. We are also now offering our freshly prepared, homestyle meals and delivering them straight to our customers’ doors at the affordable price of $8 a meal.” Initially, the café adopted a pick-up model for meals, but the staff noticed a few familiar faces weren’t stopping by. “That’s when we started the Jackson Café meal delivery service. Anyone can sign up to have meals delivered at home and our amazing volunteers will bring them to you so you can also enjoy a feeling of connection with the café and Vivalon. Not only will you enjoy a great meal, you will support a local non-profit too.” The biggest challenge so far has been maintaining a connection to our community and

delivering meals to them in whatever way they feel safe, while still providing friendly social interaction, says Stacy. “With all the changes going on around us, we want our guests to think of the café as a constant in their life, even if they can’t enjoy it in person.” “We love using our talents to create beautiful, delicious meals,” says Chuck. “We’ve received so many wonderful handwritten thank you cards from our patrons and that has truly touched us. We love to feed people and it’s truly a privilege.” For more information on the café’s meal service, visit: whistlestop.org/nutrition/jackson-cafe.

The Spirit of Giving Spans Generations

Marvin Mars’ Family Volunteers at Operation Thanksgiving

VIVALON CONNECTIONS JANUARY 2021

n Thanksgiving morning, 45 local families lined up in socially distanced vehicles for Vivalon’s second annual “Operation Thanksgiving”. They delivered holiday cheer, with care packages that included a traditional home-cooked Thanksgiving meal, a holiday dessert, special beverages, and handmade cards, all in a festive holiday package. One family of volunteers spanned three generations, in memory of husband/father/grandfather Marvin Mars, who served as a dedicated Meals on Wheels driver for many years before he passed away in 2016. When his wife Alyce Sporer heard about the Operation Thanksgiving event, she immediately wanted to be a part of it, and

Operation Thanksgiving Care Packages

invited her daughter and two grandsons to join. A dedicated family man, Marvin was also a beloved Meals on Wheels volunteer. Alyce reminisces, “It lifted him up whenever he volunteered. He was so grateful that he was able to volunteer. Although he was in his 80s himself, he would go out faithfully each week. What Marvin provided to his Meals on Wheels clients was friendship. It was so much more than a meal.” Marvin’s grandsons Matt and Nick said it felt incredible to be following in their grandfathers’ footsteps on Thanksgiving. Although they have done other forms of volunteering, “this was different,” says Matt. “It was more personal, and it made us feel so happy to help others.”

We’d like to give a big shout-out to our event sponsors and supporters for making this event possible: • Valley Memorial Park Cemetery & Funeral Home and the Corte Madera Lions Club who donated financial support to cover the cost of the meals • Stacy Scott Catering for the delicious, homecooked meals and special gifts • Nothing Bundt Cakes for holiday desserts

• United Markets for special drinks • Mark Day School and Girl Scout Troops of San Rafael for the decorated bags, cards and placemats • The 45 families who volunteered to deliver meals

Condon reflects, “What is so gratifying is that friendships have developed and generations have connected, even though it’s just by way of a screen.” Moving into 2021 some classes will be offered outside, depending on safety, and others will continue on Zoom until regular programs can resume.

Annual membership fees in 2021 will be $40, providing free, unlimited access to all classes. Vivalon is proud to partner with the Center to provide free membership to Vivalon members! For more information please visit https://agefriendlycenter. org/classes.

intergenerational activities have significant benefits, not only for the older adult, but for young children, teens and younger adults. It has been truly inspirational to watch the fostering of friendship between generations!” The Center provides a diverse range of programs from yoga to art classes, storytime for preschoolers, Mahjong, Pickleball, a movie group, speaker series and more. Youngsters volunteer to help older adults with technology and become more understanding of the aging process. Older adults learn new skills, lead groups, and enjoy the energy and passion of younger program participants. One woman who was shy and hesitant to leave her home blossomed into an enthusiastic, fun and captivating leader of the Story Time for Children program. All generations have discovered friendship and camaraderie. During shelter in place, the Center has been able to offer some classes via Zoom. I want it to be easy for participants to engage at their own level.” “I enjoy the online sessions,” says one of her students. “When I first went in person, I was a bit embarrassed as I couldn’t keep up with the class for more than 15 minutes. But at home, I can take a break and no one knows that I’m catching my breath. And I don’t have to feel like I’m holding everybody back.” Best of all, Vivalon’s virtual classes offer a chance to meet new people and reconnect with friends you haven’t seen in a while. Learning something new—together — is what community and friendship is all about. Plus, it’s a great way to pass the time while expanding your mind and rejuvenating your body and soul. You can see a full list of classes on pages 5-8. If you need assistance learning how to use Zoom or how to connect from your phone, just ask our Care team by calling 415-456-9062.

ne of the best ways to stay mentally fit and socially connected is to engage in online learning. Virtual classrooms have really taken off in the past year, even though they’ve been around for some time. No one may have heard of Zoom before COVID, but signing up and signing on to online learning opportunities is a great way to stay in shape. You don’t even have to leave your house to enjoy some stellar learning experiences. Vivalon’s virtual classes give you plenty of ways to not only engage your mind, but your body and soul too. “Vivalon offers a great selection of online classes,” says one regular student. “Classes such as Whistlesizers, Tai Chi, hula, ukulele and more. I don’t have a computer so I didn’t have access to Zoom. However, the community care team at Vivalon showed me how to access classes just using my phone and now it’s a breeze.” Elizabeth Lynn has been teaching Whistlesizers for the last six years. “Once our students get used to the technology, they really enjoy the sessions.
