● Fremont Bank Foundation contributes funds for updated play structure in Heritage Oak Park
By Roelle Balan
It was an exciting morning for children in Union City. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new playground at Heritage Oak Park took place on Friday, Sept. 5, at 11am.
Apparently, the kids couldn’t wait for the official opening. One girl was seen standing on top of the slides, about to slide down as her grandma watched her to make sure she was okay. Another girl, accompanied by her grandpa, joined her on the slides.
The bright and colorful playground features five slides, a bridge, and a set of monkey bars. A Fremont Bank Foundation official said through email that the playground is made out of eco-friendly and recycled plastic material to prevent rust and overheating.
The new play structure came about after the old one was removed for safety concerns. Union City grounds supervisor

n a sprawling Fremont, a quick turn off Mission Boulevard and onto Mowry leads to a hidden garden behind Mission Valley Veterinary Clinic. Beyond the gate, the land sud-
denly opens up into a garden with raised planters, greenhouses, vegetable beds and beehives. Colorful murals painted by local students compete with the flowers to add vibrancy and cheer. The scents of mulch and compost permeate the air,
and occasionally a train horn blares. Hills loom over everything, creating the impression that stepping into the garden means stepping out of urban life and into another world.
This was the atmosphere at Local Ecology and Agriculture Fremont (LEAF)’s grand opening for their Urban Farm, developed on land leased from the Alameda Little league Twenty-two teams finish up 2025 season. 22
Washington
shares education and experience focused on women’s heart health
For Washington Health Medical Group (WHMG) cardiologist Sangeetha Balakrishnan, MD, fitness and heart health go hand in hand, and the broad foundation she builds for her patients begins with education.
Dr. Balakrishnan first works with her patients to focus on risk factors for heart disease. Some can’t be changed, including age, gender, family history and race. Others can be modified or improved, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, physical activity, smoking, diabetes, an unhealthy diet, chronic stress, sleep apnea and alcohol abuse. Educating her patients is the first step.
“First we work together with our patients to try to prevent or delay heart disease through education and recommendations for healthy living,” she said. “Then, if heart disease does develop, we work together to find the best plans for treatment.”
While that’s true for all her patients, it’s even more important for her women patients. Research shows women are less likely to seek treatment for cardiac issues compared to men.
“In my experience, women tend to focus more on other people rather than themselves,” Dr. Balakrishnan
explained. They may not feel quite right or even have some symptoms that could indicate heart issues, but they put off seeing a doctor because they don’t have time or just have too many other things going on. But the truth is, if you delay evaluation or care, you end up having worse outcomes.”
For many years, women were underrepresented (or completely unrepresented) in cardiac research. The symptoms men presented with during heart attacks or other cardiac events were held up as the gold standard to initiate treatment in the emergency department. It’s only been in the last 35 years that heart disease in women has been studied independently of men. In fact, some health care providers still rely on diagnostic models based on primarily male data, failing to account for the physiological differences in how women experience heart disease. That has led to a great difference in how cardiac health in women is treated, Dr. Balakrishnan said.
“Women are more likely to have an atypical presentation including symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, and fatigue,” she noted. “Coupled with guidelines created for men along with societal stereotypes that associate symptoms like fatigue
or shortness of breath with anxiety or stress rather than heart disease, this can lead to a missed diagnosis in women, or a misdiagnosis, with women’s heart disease often categorized as gastrointestinal problems or anxiety. Because women’s symptoms are often more subtle and varied, and they are more likely to downplay them, diagnoses are frequently delayed or missed.”
Follow the Signs
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Both can have a heart attack, but they may experience very different symptoms. The most classically recognized symptoms – nausea and shortness of breath, and chest pain radiating to the left arm, shoulder or jaw – are generally more common in men. Women more often complain of feeling like they have indigestion or heartburn with pain in the upper back or neck, accompanied by fatigue and lightheadedness. Women are more likely to have what is known as a “silent heart attack,” or myocardial infarction (MI) without the typical heart attack symptoms. This can deter them from seeking treatment.
“I’ve had women come in, or be referred by their primary care provider, because they think they have indigestion and taking antacids isn’t helping, or they feel exhausted,” she said. “I always tell my patients if you start noticing that you’re more winded, or need to take more breaks during activity, it’s time to get checked out. Women tend to ignore these subtle changes, but they can be warning signs that something isn’t quite right with your heart.”
Dr. Balakrishnan shared that women have risk factors different from men. Women are at higher risk of heart attacks after menopause. Autoimmune

disorders and pregnancy complications including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes can also increase their chances of developing heart disease. Other risk factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, are common in women and may also increase as they age. Women have smaller arteries and may have blockages in the smaller vessels of the heart. They are also more likely to have a type of heart disease called nonobstructive coronary artery disease, where blood flow is restricted to the heart without a clear blockage.
“I tell my patients to get regular checkups and teach them to pay attention to their numbers,”
Dr. Balakrishnan explained. “Know your usual blood pressure range. Know what your cholesterol is. If you’re diabetic or pre-diabetic, know your blood sugar numbers, your A1C. I tell them what symptoms they should be watching out for.”
“We talk about what a healthy diet looks like for them, that being active doesn’t mean just doing 30-45 minutes in the gym, and that being healthy is a lifetime goal,” she continued. “The most important thing is to pay attention to your body. Recognize when something doesn’t feel right – and for women, that could be a small change – and see your primary care provider. Women need to take time to care for themselves so they can be around to take care of the people who rely on them.”

In response to the community’s desire to learn more about safety and injury prevention, Washington Health will host its first Community Safety Fair, Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Washington West, 2500 Mowry Ave., Fremont.
Informative sessions will include how to stop bleeding; choking prevention; injury prevention; and cycling safety. These, along with kid-friendly activities, promise to make the indoor and outdoor event both educational and fun for families.
Members of the community will have the opportunity to talk to first responders and view emergency vehicles from the area’s fire, police, and emergency services departments. Event partner Bike East Bay, a biking advocacy and safety organization, will hold a bike rodeo, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., to demonstrate the rules of the road and safe cycling.
This event is the latest in Washington Health’s community health series, which has included heart, family, and behavioral health programs. “Response to this year’s Community Health Needs Assessment told us that residents want to know more about staying safe and preventing injury,” says Kayla Gupta, Community Outreach manager.
The Community Safety Fair marks the first anniversary of the Washington Health Trauma Center, which opened July 1, 2024, according to Jennifer Kubisz, RN, Trauma Program director. “Our
goal is to make our community safer,” she explains, “and this Community Safety Fair will raise residents’ awareness on how to avoid injury.”
Creating a Safer Community
“The more we can promote safety and prevent injuries in our community, the better our community will be,” she adds.
In the past year since opening, the Washington Health Trauma Center has cared for approximately 2,300 patients, many whose lives were saved following injuries from gunshots, burns, car accidents, falls, and other traumas.
“A major concern for injury is bicycle accidents, especially from electric bikes and scooters,” says Kubisz. With this in mind, the Community Safety Fair will stress bike safety, especially the need to wear helmets. Free bike helmets will be given to the first 120 guests. Tourniquets for bleeding and first aid information will also be available. Children will enjoy free face-painting, balloon animals, and Kona ice.
Community members can also attend an informative session on drug use, and receive free naloxone kits — the lifesaving medication for opioid overdose — from the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse.
The Washington Health Trauma Center also wants to raise awareness for fall prevention, both in and out of the home. “Falls are increasing with
an aging population,” notes Kubisz. “We want to encourage people to keep moving, stay strong, and to prevent sedentary lifestyles that can lead to falls and accidents.”
Teaching Fall Prevention, Bike Safety
Each year, millions of Americans age 65 and up, experience a fall, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than one in four seniors fall each year, yet less than half ever tell their doctor. One fall increases the chances of falling again.
Kubisz encourages families to evaluate their homes for fall hazards, including loose cords on the floor, scatter rugs, clutter, and unsafe stairs.
Organizations or community members who want more safety information or training can contact the Trauma Program, which is happy to come to a workplace or other location to educate. Email TraumaDept@whhs.com to inquire about training.
“Having a trauma center right in Fremont, makes our community safer. The community can rest assured that Washington Health Trauma Center is here for them,” says Kubisz.
The center also posts safety videos on YouTube at YouTube.com/ @washington_health/shorts.
Members of the community are encouraged to mark their calendars for Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking is free.
“The more we can promote safety and prevent injuries in our community, the better our community will be.”

Country Drive improvements and resurfacing was recently completed and what a tremendous job done by Fremont City elected public servants, city transportation and finance team and their contractor for the new facelift of Country Drive.
Without each of you, these new improvements would not have been made possible. The work that was completed recently has improved safety for residents along Country Drive, Centerville community park users, Washington HS students
and teachers and school administrators, bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists using Country Drive.
Personally speaking, if there will be a survey for residents along Country Drive for these roadway improvements that were done, definitely it is 10+++ from me.

Specialized nectar storage and colors make trumpet shape ideal for birds, bees and butterflies
By Daniel O’Donnell
Attracting hummingbirds, bees and butterflies is a popular goal for gardeners. There’s a wide range of flowering plants that can provide their nectar requirements. However, there’s one flower shape that’s specifically evolved to attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies while restricting access to nectar for other pollinators.
The primary purpose of a flower is reproduction. Flowers come in many different shapes to aid this purpose. The structure of a cup-shaped flower allows it to support the weight of large pollinating insects such as beetles. Disk-shaped flowers that are mostly flat offer places for pollinators such as butterflies to land easily. These shapes attract a wide range of insects. Competition can make it more difficult for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds to find available nectar. Trumpet-shaped flowers can be pollinated more dependably than those with other shapes. The nectar is located deep inside the flower. This depth, a lack of a strong scent and a poor landing platform keep nectar hidden from other pollinators.
Through coevolution, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths and some bee species have developed specialized tongues, making this nectar accessible. The relationship between these specific pollinators and flowers almost guarantees a precise transfer of pollen to the pollinator. Many trumpet-shaped flowers’ reproductive organs are positioned to brush pollen against a hummingbird’s forehead as it laps up nectar.
Trumpet-shaped flowers have other features that further entice these three specialized pollinators. Many trumpet-shaped flowers have vivid red and orange hues which are particularly appealing to hummingbirds. Yellow, pink and purple trumpet-shaped flowers, in addition to the red and orange ones, are especially attractive to butterflies and bees. Some trumpet-shaped flowers have patterns that guide hummingbirds to the nectar. Some, such as those on a trumpet vine, offer up to 10 times more nectar than other flowers.
Below are five plants that have trumpet-shaped flowers that will figuratively sound “Reveille” and wake the garden up with hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.
Cigar plant, Cuphea ignea, refers to a single species of Cuphea which has small trumpet- or cigar-shaped flowers. There are many varieties and several cultivars and hybrids. Cupheas are small, evergreen, perennial, semi-woody shrubs with compact branching. They produce a dense canopy of one-inch, trumpet-shaped flowers from spring until fall. Each type of Cuphea ignea produces different tri-colored flower patterns, and bees in particular love this plant.
California Fuchsia, Epilobium canum, is a California native, drought tolerant, perennial groundcover. It produces a carpet of bright orange tubular flowers from spring until early fall, and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies in particular. It spreads easily, making it a great low-maintenance plant. However, because it’s a ground cover, it can make hummingbirds more vulnerable to cat ambushes.
Angel’s Trumpet, Brugmansia, is a small tree or shrub native to tropical regions of South America. It can bloom with countless large trumpet-shaped flowers up to three times a year in many parts of the Bay Area. The large flowers attract hummingbirds and bees. There are examples of butterfly larvae using Brugmansias as food. Although the leaves are toxic, the pupae and adult butterflies have evolved to store the toxin and use it as a defense mechanism. Many varieties also have a wonderful night scent as an added bonus.
Yellow Bells, Tecoma stans, is a perennial shrub in the trumpet vine family. It’s native to the southwestern region of the U.S. and Mexico. It produces numerous vibrant yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers that entice hummingbirds and butterflies. It can grow from three feet tall to over eight feet and blooms spring through early fall. It can grow in full sun or semi-shade, which offers the hummingbirds and butterflies a nice break from the heat during the summer.
Mini Angel’s Trumpet, Iochroma, is one of the few plants whose Latin name
is more commonly used than its common name. It can be considered a shrub or a small tree. Native to Mexico, Central and South America, it produces numerous small clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers which attract hummingbirds and bees. Natural colors include purple, white, yellow, blue and red, with cultivars and hybrids creating different shades for the Iochroma’s flower palette. It’s beneficial to the local ecosystem to have different flowering plants throughout the garden, in planters on patios, or in pots on balconies to support a wide variety of pollinators. However, growing plants with trumpet-shaped flowers will not only support the environment, it will turn the garden into a resounding example of how to successfully attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.

Jesus Bañuelos said the old, aging, wooden play structure built in the early 2000s started to “rot” and “teeter” whenever it was stepped on. As a result, the playground was removed in 2022.
Mayor Gary Singh said during the ribbon-cutting ceremony that the city was struggling with funding for the new playground. Singh was proactive and decided to contact Fremont Bank Foundation and ask for funding. The foundation gave a generous amount to Union City. Singh said their donation covered nearly half of the total cost needed to build the new playground, while the city funded the other half.
The foundation was established in 1995 as a private, grant-making entity funded by Fremont Bank. It offers help to communities where Fremont Bank is located. Their offices are spread throughout the Bay Area, including Union City, San Leandro and Dublin,
with the main branch located on Fremont Boulevard.
Union City Councilmembers Lance Nishihira, Jaime Patiño, and Jeff Wang also attended the event. Representatives from California State Senator Aisha Wahab’s Office gave a commendation to the City of Union City and Fremont Bank Foundation for the new play structure.
Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Márquez’s field representative Efeosa Orhue also presented a commendation to the City and the Fremont Bank Foundation.
“It is extremely important that we continue to create safe and vibrant places like this,” Orhue said. “This achievement would not have been possible without your contributions, and stands as a milestone in building vibrant, inclusive spaces that enrich Union City’s quality of life.”

● Police department shares information at public hearing

On Thursday, Sept. 11, the Newark City Council held a public hearing on Newark Police Department’s list of “Military Equipment.” This is part of the city’s compliance with state
first floor of the mall. Two dance instructors plan to teach up to three one-hour classes in the evenings with 5-15 students each. The classes would be held from 5pm to 9pm on weekdays and 10am to 6pm on the weekends.
They’re taking up the space of what used to be a T-Mobile store, which vacated in 2019. This is all part of the city’s NewPark Place Specific Plan, which involves adding vibrant retail, dining, entertainment and community-oriented spaces at the mall. The city report says they hope the business will get more people to visit the mall, as the mall suffers from high vacancy rates.
law requiring the police department to get council approval before funding, purchasing and using the equipment.
The city report says the department does own equipment that is considered “Military Equipment” under state law, but it doesn’t mean the items were from the military or were made for “military use.” The list of qualified “Military Equipment” includes drones, a mobile command vehicle, patrol rifles, SWAT rifles, noise flash divisionary device and a PepperBall Launcher.
After the public hearing, Councilmember Terrence Grindall said the name of the state law is unfortunate. “I think it’s really unfortunate language to use, kind of inflammatory, and where I see that the use Newark makes of this equipment to be something beneficial to the community,” he said.
Acting Lieutenant Yama Homayoun said they held a required community engagement meeting for residents to take a look at the equipment inside one of their training rooms and ask questions.

County Water District. LEAF is a nonprofit collection of volunteers with two urban gardens in Fremont. In addition to growing produce and donating it to local foodbanks, they educate students and adults on regenerative growing practices.
Volunteers have done much work over the past 18 months to treat the soil, install irrigation and build planters. The opening, dubbed “Grow Together,” celebrated the partners who brought the vision into reality.
Zoe Caron, an artist with a background in biological science, shared, “The thing that I love most about working at LEAF is the fact that there really is an intersection of art and science, and art as a tool to bring the community together, get them into the garden and learn about what we’ve got going on with the soil.”
At the event, different stations
demonstrated aspects of the garden. Caron showed in-progress murals that portray plant and animal life above and below the soil. Dr. Joshua Garcia came with a tri-fold on his experiments on how regenerative farming affects soil. And Syndee Kuhlman showed off the garden’s bee colony and honey production.
Bettina Grab, director of development, marketing and partnerships for LEAF, thanked the event sponsors: Fremont Bank (whose foundation also supported the landscape and irrigation), in-kind sponsors Republic Services and Stopwaste, and the snacks and drink sponsors.
The new land is divided into an education garden and a production garden.
“We’re going to double the amount of food that we’re going to produce,” said LEAF president Elaine Owyang. Planters in the education garden take on whim-
sical shapes to represent the sun, clouds and wind. Still in progress is an education center between two storage trailers, with a planned opening in 2026.
Owyang thanked the City of Fremont for helping with rezoning the land for agriculture. “Did you ever hear about cities changing zoning? Well, they did it for us in six months!” She also shared that on Thursday, Sept. 4, LEAF was approved for a $20,000 grant from USDA to be paid out over four years. She joked, “I’ve never filled out so many forms in my life. I gave them every single number that I have.”
Sheena Vaidyanathan, founder of Tera Farm, was the keynote speaker. She talked about the importance of supporting small farmers and making sure they get the profits from their crops. “It’s not easy to be a small farmer,” she said. “Which is why everywhere around us you’ll see
these big ag with a hundred acres of cauliflower, two hundred acres of broccoli. That’s what they have. We want to change this. We want diversity.”
In July 2025, LEAF became contracted educators with California School of the Blind (just a mile away from the urban farm). Kate McGrath and Jim Blackshear from the school’s vocational department came to speak. The school already has two beds in LEAF’s community garden in Niles.
McGrath said, “We have students who have never been in a garden before. [One] lives in an apartment and this was his first time being around plants. He has the hugest smile every time he comes here. We also have a student who’s considering doing landscape design as a career, and when it became time to show interest in what jobs he wanted this year he was like, ‘I want to go back to LEAF. That’s where I want to be.’”
Not measurable by science, but important to LEAF’s thriving, are the good vibes. Owyang said, “We wish for something, ‘like we need compost,’ and all of a sudden compost magically appears. We need chips and they appear. I think if you come here you’ll feel how magical this place is.”

drops, enjoy friendly competitions for both owners and their dogs, including a playground pet trick contest, and earn prizes. As people make their way along the hillside, they will have the chance to see views overlooking the bay.
Vendors such as Kona Ice will be there, serving treats to families, as well as local businesses and service organizations hosting booths. “We have dignitaries and sponsors showing up, but we also have your regular mom-and-pop businesses that are going to be there. Everyone’s pitching in to make it a great event,” says Arthur Barinque, who has planned the Mutt Strut.
This year, the Mutt Strut will feature a dog yoga session (which will be led by Hungry Tailz Rescue), Boswick the Clown and a dog costume contest, which Barinque thinks attendees will look forward to seeing the most.
The event is more than just fun—proceeds of the Mutt Strut are given back
to students and teachers in the district through the New Haven Schools Foundation. In the past, funds have gone toward scholarships for graduating high school seniors and classroom grants for teachers, which provide students with technology, supplies and opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities.
This year’s proceeds will continue the mission of supporting local education. Students, teachers and administrators from the New Haven School District will also be on hand to volunteer and participate in activities.
For many, the Mutt Strut is a chance to learn more about local organizations and interact with peers and friends. Barinque says, “I think the spirit of the Mutt Strut is really community coming together and spending the day with the people they love and their companions.”
With laughter, music and plenty of wagging tails, this year’s Mutt Strut promises to bring the Union City community closer together.

The event is part of a larger statewide effort to reduce trash called Coastal Cleanup Day, which was started in 1985. Launched in response to concern over increased trash on beaches, the event has since grown into the largest single-day volunteer event in the state, mobilizing thousands of people every year to beaches and waterways to collect trash.
This has expanded to inland areas as well, where litter can travel through storm drains or waterways into the bay. The Castro Valley Creek cleanup has been held in the same location yearly and plays its part to remove trash and keep the community clean. Last year alone, the Alameda County Clean Water Program (ACCWP) collected over 44 cubic yards of trash, an amount weighing over 70,000 pounds.

The program also serves a mission beyond simply picking up trash. Cynthia Butler, the ACCWP spokesperson, said that the event seeks to motivate people that they can make a difference within their communities. “Part of our main message is [our motto] ‘only rain down the storm drain.’ We try to remind people that anything that ends up on our streets will wash down the storm drain and end up in our creeks in the bay,” she added.
To support this goal, the program allows high school volunteers or other participants to help sort and analyze the types of trash collected. This helps organizers track trends over time and

Improvements don’t always need to be the result of large cleanups, but small changes like choosing not to litter. Single-use plastics and pesticides for gardens often accumulate near oceans, Butler says, so choosing to be conscious when throwing away trash or using less-toxic items goes a long way.

● Community members meet at Quarry Lakes to raise funds for breast cancer patients
By Avni Mishra
Nearly 200,000 women live with breast cancer in California alone. Thousands of those cases belong to the Bay Area, where the Hope, Empowerment, Renewal and Support (HERS) Breast Cancer Foundation aids survivors. In 1998, three women aimed to recognize the unique needs of breast cancer patients. Under the leadership of executive director Tina Fernandez, HERS Breast Cancer Foundation has evolved to provide post-surgical products and services for breast cancer survivors. HERS is hosting its 26th annual Walk/Run/Yoga fundraiser on Sept. 27.
Fernandez says that the main reason HERS conducts fundraisers is to address the inequity in healthcare. Fundraisers that are open to the entire community to participate allow HERS to dispense products to individuals who are uninsured and underserved through the rest of the year. “We really feel that everyone deserves to heal and look their best,” says Fernandez.
Their Walk/Run/Yoga fundraiser is extremely meaningful to those all over the Bay Area, whether they’re family members or they’ve undergone the traumatic experience of breast cancer. Participants have the option to walk a 5K track, or run a 5K or 10K track. For those who have physical restrictions, HERS has prioritized a yoga activity for all ages, and chair yoga for those who have mobility restrictions.
To add fun to the meaningful event, the HERS team has a costume contest for groups. Secret judges walk around the duration of the event, judging groups dressed as characters such as Pikachu and Wonder Woman.
One of the most important aspects of the fundraiser is Elaine’s Memorial Circle. Elaine Skloot was an employee at HERS who did not survive the battle against breast cancer. As a tribute to her contribution to the foundation and her resilience, all attendees form a large circle. Director Carolyn Dillingham goes around the circle with a microphone and gives each person the chance to share their breast cancer journey. “It's really just a celebration that they’re still here and a reminder about how precious life is,” says Fernandez.
Several participants and volunteers make this event possible, including the Gilligan and Buentello families, who play a major role each year. The family cre-
ates hundreds of paper footprints that attendees can take and write the name of a friend or family member to whom they want to dedicate their walk or run.
Additionally, every year, the fundraiser has a theme. Last year, it was the Wizard of Oz, with the tagline, “There’s no place like hope.” This year, Fernandez expects to see plenty of pink cowboy hats for the western theme, “Giving Cancer the Boot.” These efforts by the community make the fundraiser all the more meaningful. Attendees get a chance to honor their own journey or someone else’s through these small gestures.
Making this fundraiser a reality involves a lot of work behind the scenes for the entire HERS team. Their work starts in May, as they reach out to sponsors and buy supplies. High school senior Kavya Datt is in charge of designing 600 t-shirts for the fundraiser. Each year, she creates an original design relating to the theme.
“It gives me a lot of gratification knowing that people appreciate and wear the t-shirts I design,” says Datt. The entirety of this program wouldn’t be possible without the sponsors and participants who donate time and resources.
Over the years, this fundraiser has become an integral part of the Bay Area community, highlighting the persever-
ance and strength of all patients and survivors of breast cancer. In the 26 years this event has been occurring, the foundation has made some changes to make the event more efficient. This year, all registration has become online to make the event more environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
The HERS Walk/Run/Yoga fundraiser is the kickoff for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and paves the way for future fundraisers that continue to provide crucial support for the community.

They were leaders in providing day care, in championing for affordable housing, in ecological conservation, in finding innovative solutions for social justice issues. Their work has been at the core of providing care and advocating for underserved and marginalized groups.
Now, as they begin a new phase in their lives, they are an example of how to embrace change in the last chapter of life.
As culmination of a process begun in 2007 by the Sisters to provide for a continuity of their life’s work and mission for as long as possible, Sister Annamarie Therese Colapietro, SNJM was installed as Canonical Trustee for Sisters of the Holy Family by Bishop Michael C. Barber in June.
According to Sister Gladys Guenther, retiring President of Sisters of the Holy Family, just as they have always sought the best use of the resources entrusted to their care, they began a decade long discernment process to determine the best use of their time and talents in their final years.
Sister Gladys explained that they decided to seek a Canonical Trustee after looking at several different options. By transferring administrative and leadership responsibilities to someone else “we know that whatever happens, we will be cared for until the end. To not have a plan for our years of aging was just not acceptable.” Very few communities have Canonical Trustees, so together they will be living into the relationship.
Sister Annamarie is very excited to be on this journey with the Holy Family Sisters. “When I heard Sister Gladys say, ‘What we need is for somebody with an adventurous spirit to jump off the cliff with us,’ I was totally intrigued. Of course, I said yes when I was asked by Sister Maureen Delaney, my Provincial to be their Canonical Trustee.”
Just as they have done in the past in their ministry and their lives, Sisters of the Holy Family are charting a new path for others to follow. They are creating the next chapter in their story… a chapter about accepting change as they live life to completion.
While there will be someone new at the administrative level, Sisters of the Holy Family will continue to be a presence in the community…sharing love and helping hands to people who need us, advocating for neglected populations, and encouraging and empowering others to join us in creating just solutions.

All Signs: This week begins with sizzling, passionate flirtation because on Monday, Venus in romantic Leo will dance with sexy Mars in the sociable sign of Libra. People will find it easy to express themselves, which is a good thing. So many missed attractions between people occur because of a reluctance to be the first to speak, or the fear of rejection or of looking foolish? Be bold this week! In the meantime, we’re all experiencing the growing phenomenon of shrinkflation— same price, smaller container.
Aries the Ram (March 21-April 20):
This week you’re keen to work, which is why it is fortunate that you have the energy, focus and drive to do so. You’ll be hands-on with whatever you approach. Coworkers are helpful. In fact, a workrelated flirtation or romance will begin for some of you. Speaking of which, Monday is a wonderful, romantic day! New love might blossom!. As the artisan of the zodiac, this is also a creative time for you. Connect with your muse and give free rein to your talents. Continue to look for ways to improve your home.
Taurus the Bull (April 21-May 20):
This is a playful week! Get ready to enjoy romance, sports events, fun activities with kids, the arts, the theatre, the entertainment industry along with opportunities to socialize with friends. Many of you will entertain at home. (Successful gourmand and chef that you are, invitations to your table are always coveted.) On Monday, new romance with someone that you met through work or through a family member might begin. Take note: even though you have marvelous opportunities to play –Mars will urge you to keep working hard as well.
Gemini the Twins (May 21-June 20):
As the wordsmith of the zodiac, you’re a top-notch communicator. These skills will bubble to the surface this week with flirtations, entertaining stories and friendly exchanges with everyone. As if by magic, you will say the right thing at the right time to the right person. At the same time, home and family continue to be your primary focus. Many of you
will entertain at home or redecorate and tackle home repairs. Continue to seek ways to boost your wealth because they exist—perhaps through a better paying job?
Cancer the Crab (June 21-July 21):
Your fast pace continues! Increased interactions with neighbours and relatives. Plus, short trips, appointments and errands will add to your busy schedule. On a personal note, you’re keen to be heard right now. This is also a time when gifts might come your way. You might see ways to boost your income through a home-based business. This is a fortunate year for you with lucky Jupiter in your sign. It is also a time of preparation for you to get performance ready for your time of harvest when you will shine in 2028.
Leo the Lion (July 22-August 22):
This week you’re focused on money, cash flow and earnings. You might have moneymaking ideas, or thoughts about boosting your assets. What is your attitude about money? Is it “easy come, easy go?” Might more careful shopping bring less waste? The wise choice is to spend your money so that you feel rewarded, whether buying things you need or helping others. Be smart. Think about your spending practices, and how to make the best use of what you own. Meanwhile, this week promises sexy flirtations.
Virgo the Virgin (August 23-September 22):
You continue to be empowered this week because the Sun, plus your ruler Mercury are in your sign! On Friday, fair Venus will also enter Virgo, giving the entire world a Virgo hit! This means you’re in your element. You’ll be empowered and confident. You will also be keen to talk to others and express your views. In addition, once Venus enters your sign, you’ll be diplomatic and charming. Without question, all of you are enjoying increased popularity now, despite the fact that marriages and close partnerships might feel challenged. Nothing is perfect.
Libra the Scales (September 23-October 22):
Continue to wait in the wings until Libra enters your sign next Monday. This means that much of what you’re doing right now is behind the scenes. One exception will be flirtations and love affairs, which will be more public. An attraction with someone in a group setting is likely because this is the classic time for a platonic friendship to turn romantic. And with lucky Jupiter at the top of your chart, (something that happens only once in 12 years), you look accomplished, happy and affluent to everyone.
Scorpio the Scorpion (October 23-November 21):
A popular week! Many of you will be more involved in group settings,
conferences and committees. Because you’re giving more thought to your goals, you might be influenced by group ideals or the standards of others. You will also find that it is easier to be loving and affectionate to others right now, which is why almost all your relationships will be friendly, as well as romantic. Grab opportunities to travel or explore further education so that you are “performance ready” for next year when you will shine!
Sagittarius the Archer (November 22-December 21):
Because this is the only time all year when the Sun is at the top of your chart (for four weeks), in many ways, it’s the most powerful time of the year for you. You’ll look accomplished. This is a symbol that you are in the flattering spotlight of the Sun. Because you have this magical advantage, now is the time to use it! Go after whatever you want because doors will open for you. In the meantime, a flirtation with someone from another culture might occur this week.
Capricorn the Goat (December 22-January 19):
You are a complex sign because in one way, you like a predictable outcome. You work for your long-term security. And yet, like Howard Hughes (a fellow Capricorn), you might take wild chances and surprise everyone. This latter influence is at play this week, which is why you’re seeking adventure and a chance to learn new things and meet new people. A passionate flirtation might occur. This is supported by the fact that this year in particular will bless all your relationships, so it’s the best year in over a decade for Capricorns to marry.
Aquarius the Water Bearer (January 20-February 18):
You feel passionate about everything this week! Romance, values and the state of the world. This is why you might stumble into a passionate flirtation on Monday, or any time this week. It’s an emotional whirlwind waiting to happen. Indeed, you can feel the winds of change blowing in your direction because in the next few years, many of you will have residential moves or job changes or both. In the meantime, welcome adventure!
Pisces the Fish (February 19-March 20):
Remember to get more rest this week because you need it. At this time, your focus on your closest relationships is strong. In fact, you have the advantage of more objectivity––which will allow you to get a better understanding of the dynamics and help you see how to improve them. We know you can’t change the behaviour of someone else but you can change your own. On Monday, a work-related romance might spark! In fact, flirtations might occur anytime this week. Think twice about resisting temptation because it might not come your way again.

There are ways for a city to fund affordable housing projects without taxing its residents. One way is through tax-exempt bonds. At a public hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 9, Fremont City Council approved a reissuance of bonds for the affordable housing project Osgood North Apartments on 41829 and 41875 Osgood Road.
The city does not owe any money for this affordable housing project, which has multiple funding sources, but they do have to hold a public hearing because the housing project is located in Fremont. The public hearing requirement complies with the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982 (TEFRA).
“This bond is part of the financing mechanism for this project,” said Fremont Housing manager Lucia Hughes during a phone interview.
The city held a first TEFRA hearing in November 2021 for the housing project’s bond financing plan. Hughes said the bond is being reissued because construction of the housing project took longer than expected. This changes a part of the bond called a maturity rate, triggering a required TEFRA hearing held by the city council approving the bond reissuance.
The housing project is currently standing with residents living in nearly all of the 111 units. But, Hughes said some tasks needed to be done before construction is officially complete.
The housing project includes a mix of studios, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units for residents who are considered to be part of very low income to low-income households. According to the City of Fremont website, that household income is a range of around $48,000 to $125,000 for a 4-member household. This means if two adults live in that household, they would each have to have an annual income that is less than $62,000.
HEARTFELT ACHIEVEMENT Sai Aditya Koorapati organized a blood drive for his Eagle Project with help from Elisa Manzanares of Stanford Blood Center.
● Event encourages 30 first-time donors
By staff
On Sept. 6, Troop 269 Eagle Scout candidate Sai Aditya Koorapati led a community blood drive for his Eagle Scout Project. The drive took place in Stanford Blood Center’s mobile van outside First United Methodist Church in Fremont. Troop 269, Stanford Blood Center, and Youth Emergency Preparedness Council (YEPC) partnered on the event.
At the drive, 30 attendees donated for the first time—with the incentive of $20 eCards as an added bonus to taking the plunge. All attendees were entered into a drawing for Oct. 19 SF 49ers vs. Atlanta Falcons football game tickets. In total the blood donated at the drive can help 87 patients.
Koorapati shared in a writeup submitted to this paper, “This project was an incredible opportunity to engage the community in service. I am grateful for the support of my fellow Scouts, YEPC members and everyone who came forward to donate. Together, we were able to make a meaningful difference.”
The event embodies Scouting’s core values of service, teamwork and community impact. It also highlights the critical need for blood donations, as every two seconds someone in the U.S. requires blood, according to Stanford Blood Center.
What happens if there’s a disaster and you lose your home? What if you can’t find food or safe water? That’s a scary thought. Yet, every year, children around the world face disasters like floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and conflict.
That’s where ShelterBox comes in!
An earthquake
When disaster strikes, not everyone needs the same thing.
After an earthquake, families might need strong tents and tool kits to rebuild.
In flooding, families may get water filters and blankets.
In conflict zones, aid could include solar lights and cooking sets.
Every package is different, but all are designed to help families survive and recover when they’ve lost everything.
Do the math problem under each item. If the answer is an even number, that item may be included in a ShelterBox package. Circle it in green. If it’s an odd number, the item is not in the box. Cross it out.
Look through the newspaper and circle in green pictures and words that are “needs.” Circle in orange things that are “wants.”

With 300 kids representing 22 teams spanning from the tee ball division through juniors, the 2025 spring season for Union City National Little League (UCNLL) was an overwhelming success from start to finish.
Here’s a recap of the notable end of season highlights from the youngest to the oldest:
In June, baseballers aged seven to eight competed in the local Jerry Barry tournament, an experience meant to
promote post-season play and prepare the kids for their later years in baseball. The tournament is also a way for the community to honor an old, dear friend and advisor, Jerry Barry. Under the coaching and direction of Danny Mayen-Cole and Nick Williges, UC National fought hard and exited the tournament in the semi-championship round in a defeat against San Lorenzo.
On May 14, the Union City National Softball Minor Division, led by Armando Hurtado, Angel Perez, Mark Perry and Oscar Vargas won one of two Tournament of Champions (TOC) flags for UCNLL, defeating Tennyson American Little League, 12-3.
Union City National’s 11-year-old All Star Team captured the District 45 All Star Flag in dramatic fashion. After winning their first game, they lost to San Lorenzo Little League.
Coming out of the loser’s bracket, they defeated Castro Valley to advance to the championship against San Lorenzo, needing to win twice.
After winning game one, they forced a winner-take-all game that ended in a walk-off win to capture the flag. Down one run in the last inning, Aiden Huffmaster walked on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. Then, Mateo Ramirez tripled to right field to tie the game. On a 0-1 pitch, Jaxson Reyes hit a rocket to left field, scoring Mateo Ramirez for the win in walk-off fashion. The team was led by Saul Ramirez, Chris Huffmaster and Keith Yamagata.
In the 50/70 Division, UCNLL defeated Castro Valley 12-3, winning the league’s second District 45 TOC Flag. The team was led by Michael Guzman, Miguel Perez and Francisco Gomez.
Finally, the Junior All Stars won District 45, beating Castro Valley 6-2 on June 23. The team then went 3-0 in the Section 3 Junior All Star Tournament, defeating Palo Alto Little League 16-12 on July 8. The team went on to compete in the State Tournament, going 3-0 to advance to the championship before losing to Mark West Little League (MWLL) of Santa Rosa. MWLL eventually represented California in the Little League World Series Junior Division.
UCNLL’s participation at the state level marks the first time in almost 30 years for the achievement. Union City National was runner up in the State Tournament out of 302 Northern California Little League teams. The Junior Team was led by Armando Hurtado, Rick Smith and Chris Serrano.
Registration for the spring 2026 season begins in November 2025. The season officially starts in February 2026. For more information follow the league on Instagram @uc_national_official.
December 20, 1937 – August 28, 2025
erald Raymond Campbell, a 62-year resident of Newark, CA, passed away suddenly and peacefully August 28, 2025 in Fremont, CA, with his devoted family at his side and by his ear. He was 87. Born December 20, 1937 in Nady, AR; the son of Sadie and Gerald Campbell, he was raised in Hobbs, NM.
He was a proud U.S. Air Force veteran who entered service in 1956. As a member of the Strategic Air Command, 23rd Bomb Squadron, during the Cold War he maintained the engines of the first B-52s.
While serving at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA, he met his future wife, Mary. Married in 1960, they moved to Newark, CA, in 1963, where they raised two sons. He worked as a commercial airline mechanic and inspector at the United Air Lines maintenance base at San Francisco International Airport from 1960 until retiring in 2002.
A lifelong student of U.S. history, he enjoyed his retirement by studying maps of the Old West and military history, and reading several spy and western novels each week. He will be remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues for his pointed wit, wisdom, and fierce loyalty. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Campbell; sons, Michael, Barry (Trisha); and grandchildren, Willow and Riley; nephews, Frank Jacopetti and Frank Dickey; nieces, Janet Baggini (Angel), Lisa Zamora, Aurora Montanez; friend, J.W. ● Festival welcomed all to enjoy South Asian music, dance and cultural expression
By Ava Acharya
The first weekend in September, crowds gathered to enjoy South Asian art and food at Ganesh Utsav 2025, a yearly festival in celebration of the Lord Ganesh. The festival, hosted by Radio Zindagi, praised the values of Lord Ganesh, including wisdom and new beginnings, while also fostering a sense of community and cultural pride among the Bay Area’s South Asian diaspora.
Radio Zindagi is the largest South Asian focused radio station in the United States. And, they have hosted Ganesh Utsav annually for over a decade. Festivities include dance and music performances, as well as group prayer. Additionally, the event features a variety of vendors selling food, art, clothing and jewelry.
Every year, the festival’s main stage features a unique idol of Ganesha. This year’s idol is Silicon Valley themed, according to Sehba Shah, the director of sales at Radio Zindagi. The idols are imported from India and assembled in the United States. And event organizers
keep the idol’s face hidden until the festival starts, Shah added.
This year, the main stage was decorated with brightly colored flowers accompanied by an LED light display. Shah said that decorations in recent years have become more technologically advanced as the festival has grown in popularity.
Shah noted that this technological evolution is just one of many ways that celebrations have developed since Radio Zindagi first started hosting Ganesh Utsav. The event first began as a branding exercise, Shah said. But, it grew into one of the largest South Asian festivals in California, attracting several thousand attendants yearly. And, while Radio Zindagi has utilized other locations around the Bay Area such as this year’s NewPark Mall, they have found that Southland Mall in Hayward works best because its central location offers greater accessibility.
The festival’s influence has spread beyond California, attracting attention from national brands. Simran Gandhi, marketing manager at ADF foods, attended the Ganesh Utsav 2025 to promote Ashoka, a brand of ready-to-eat Indian foods. Gandhi, alongside other brand representatives, set up a booth with samples of Ashoka’s shelf stable and frozen products. This marked the brand’s first promotional event in California, Gandhi said. Ashoka also helped

fund the festival as a sponsor. Gandhi said that they came to Ganesh Utsav because “this is our diaspora.”
While enjoying South Asian art, music and dance, attendees could also enjoy the flavors and foods which coincide with this cultural expression. While celebrations are focused on a Hindu deity, the festival is open to members of any religion. Shah said that the festival has been embraced as a celebration of
shared culture which reaches beyond religion. Shah added that, although she is not Hindu, she appreciates the celebration of South Asian heritage.
“It’s lovely to bring that culture to the children,” she said. “Kids need that representation.” Especially for immigrant communities, it is impactful for children to understand how their parents and grandparents grew up, Shah said.
