I was honored to meet Susie Wilson a number of times in her home. Susie had so much wisdom, charm and spunk. She was very encouraging always of young people pursuing public service. Susie will be missed.

Gentle grace, powerful leader, community warrior...thank you, Susie, for all you shared. A beautiful life.

You, a 20-something tech bro, were pitching a startup idea to the girl who was sitting across from you at a cafe. After clearing your throat, you asked, “Have you ever run out of toilet paper with no one around to help? Well, Wipr connects valued customers with locally sourced TP using a distributed, crowd-sourced platform!” I'm sure you were expecting her intrigue, maybe even arousal. With an expression of disbelief, she responded, “Wait, can't I just buy toilet paper ahead of time?” Taken aback, you re-composed yourself and replied, “Great question! We’ve found that most customers prefer the single roll delivery method, because of the personalized experience of receiving the roll from our qualified team members!” Without hesitation she retorted, “That’s the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Who wants to talk to someone while they’re taking a shit!? This is a joke, right?” Silence followed, and at this point the whole cafe was tuning in. You took a deep breath: “Our mobile app is in beta … I sold my house for this.” The look on her face was priceless. You probably could've used some TP to clean up that mess.

Santa Clara County District Attorney JEFF ROSEN‘s office files about 40,000 criminal cases a year on behalf of 1.8 million residents in its jurisdiction. The agency wields broad authority to limit the liberty and even the lives of defendants it prosecutes. So, it seems only fair for the public to know how it reacts to wrongdoing by the people tasked with fulfilling its mission.

The First Amendment Coalition (FAC) contended as much in asking for records of sexual misconduct allegations against the 600 or so folks who staff the local DA’s office. Fly recently obtained the response to FAC: a heavily redacted log of 30 claims from 2013 to spring of 2018. And all but seven are entirely obscured by black bars; even those reveal just fragments of already brief summaries. No names are named. There’s little to glean from what’s provided, but we at least got a sampling of incidents. In June 2017, for example, consultant VERNON CRAWLEY sustained a claim about a supervisor giving unwelcome Don’t neck-and-shoulder forget massages to female to tip! colleagues, engaging in a sexual relationship FLY@ with a subordinate METRONEWS. and exhibiting “sexual COM favoritism.” In August 2015, someone heard an attorney using “sex talk” in the office. Assistant District Attorney TERRY HARMAN spoke with the accuser, who denied grousing about “sex talk” but said some lawyers had been “unprofessional when they ‘talk loud’ and use ‘F-bombs.’” Whoever Harman spoke to made sure to say that she finds the lawyers “really nice,” and didn’t want to “make a big deal out of this” and insisted that she wasn’t “complaining.” In spring of 2013, a law clerk trainee leered at a woman’s behind. Supervisor MARY DIMEO surmised that it could entail sexual harassment if the clerk was giving the woman “elevator eyes.” She reminded him of the policy, which, she concluded, “he understood.”

BLUE WAVE RISING The South Bay chapter of the Sister District Project helped turn Colorado blue. Now they’re determined to flip the rest of the country.

Silicon Valley Progressives Plan to Ride the Blue Wave to 2020 BY LLOYD ALABAN Marni Rubin, a wine seller by trade, channeled her frustrations over the 2016 elections into political activism. Earlier this year, she helped launch the South Bay chapter of the Sister District Project, a female-led progressive group determined to turn America blue— one state-level district at a time. Well, results from the most-anticipated midterm elections in living memory are in, and Sister District-backed candidates managed to push a blue wave to take back the House, and some state legislatures along with it. Through phone-banking, texting, canvassing, fundraising, an appearance by former presidential candidate Martin O’Malley, and even an arts and crafts fair, the local Sister District chapter raised over $157,000 for progressive candidates across the nation. They mailed out 7,500 postcards, made 4,476 phone calls and sent over 6,000 texts. “The really fun part,” Rubin said, “is letting people plug in to do something for democracy.”

Rubin’s main goal was to flip two seats in the Colorado State Senate—a District 16 race supporting challenger Tammy Story and a District 24 race supporting incumbent Faith Winter—to hand the state’s legislature to Democrats. Sister District’s plan is part of a larger initiative to achieve more blue “trifectas”— states in which Democrats control the governorship, the state senate and the assembly—in toss-up districts across the nation. “Since we have a Democratic legislature, many Democratic congressional representatives and two Democratic senators here in California, it often feels like we can't really make a difference,” Rubin said. “Knowing that we can help candidates outside of California with resources and voter contact helps me, and our volunteers, feel much more effective.” Rubin joined her fellow Sister District compatriots at a local Round

Table Pizza last month to watch the 2018 midterm results come in. As the night continued, it was apparent that Democrats would indeed—as predicted—win the House. But, most importantly, both Story and Winter would win their state races and give Colorado a trifecta. That’s a farm team victory that Rubin hopes will set up a major league win in 2020. All from the ground up. For Sister District, that’s where the big wins lie. “[Sister District] candidates won 16 of 24 races,” Rubin said. “Overall, we achieved our goal of moving the needle left.” Dems did however, lose ground in the U.S. Senate, and they’re still split between a progressive and legacydriven caucus both in the House and in state legislatures in the South and Midwest. Despite that, Rubin believes Sister District has paved some critical inroads to a more progressive government.

Postcard Drive Aims to Fight Betsy DeVos’ Civil Rights Rollback BY LLOYD ALABAN A coalition of women’s groups are calling on people to join a postcard campaign to fight Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ pending rollback of Title IX regulations. The Enough is Enough Voter Project has teamed up with Women’s March Los Angeles and the National Women’s Law Center to generate 100,000 postcards before the end of the public comment period for the U.S. Department of Education proposal, which would narrow schools’ obligations to people who report sexual misconduct. DeVos’ plan—pitched as a way to make the process more fair to the accused and the institutions involved— marks a departure from Obama-era rules for Title IX, a landmark civil-rights law that bans gender discrimination in federally funded schools. If approved, it would basically raise the evidentiary standard for such complaints from a preponderance to “clear and convincing.” DeVos’s regulations follow comments she made to an invitation-only audience in September 2017, outlining President Trump’s views on sexual misconduct claims. “Survivors, victims of a lack of due process, and campus administrators

Learn about a clinical study of an investigational procedure

Many people with high have all told me that the current approach does a disservice to everyone involved,” she told the audience. Enough is Enough founder Michele Dauber, the Stanford professor who recently led California’s first successful judicial recall in nearly nine decades, begs to differ. She said the policy revision on the table would be devastating to victims of sexual violence. If the rule had been in place when USA Gymnastics coach Larry Nassar was abusing his victims, she said, Michigan State would have been unable to hold him accountable. “That’s how extreme this is,” Dauber said. “Betsy DeVos is trying to destroy Title IX and take us back to a time when rape and harassment were just accepted as part of what women had to put up with,” she said in announcing the postcard drive. “Well, we aren’t going without a fight.” The postcard drive is part of a broader effort joined by A-list celebrities, college activists and civil rights groups to bombard the powers that be with public input.

SILICON SILICONALLEYS ALLEYS

MIDDLEMAN Silicon Alleys writer Gary Singh (center) poses with Krazy George (left), one of the many notable subjects he interviewed for this column in 2018.

Looking Back Columnist dealt with cultural polarities in a politically polarizing year BY GARY SINGH

I

N THE WORDS of Old Blue Eyes, it was a very good year for Silicon Alleys. As we put the lid on 2018, it is time yet again for me to review some of the most memorable material that crystallized on this page over the last 52 weeks, including local history, literature, music, sports, travel and the interstices between them all. Even though I hit 700 weekly

columns last September, that reflective screed was only one of my most grateful moments. Many others throughout the year seemed to resonate across demographic boundaries, enabling me to at least pretend I knocked something out of the park. I’ll begin with history. Since I never once cared about the prune orchards, I instead wrote about punk rock, Neal Cassady and Krazy George. San Jose’s legendary skate punk band, The Faction, made another appearance, this time via the suburban wastelands

of Campbell circa 1983 and Rancid’s Lars Frederiksen, all of whom played a gig together. In another case, the motormouth hero of the Beat Generation, the proto-punk legend Neal Cassady showed up again, this time via an entire column about his old house on Santa Clara Street, which still exists. San Jose’s own Krazy George, somewhere between punk and hippie at the ripe old age of 74, and a troublemaker who tens of thousands of us grew up with at Earthquakes games in the ‘70s, was finally inducted into the SJSU Sports Hall of Fame. From what I could tell, each one of those columns reverberated across the country. And speaking of history, sometimes it makes more sense to scour the past in order to contemplate one’s own relationship to the present. Several other columns this year attempted to do just that, the physical San Jose landscape seeming to merge with the columnist’s own inner landscape in ways that were intended to be humorous, but not everyone has my

sense of humor, so the results were never predictable. For example, Cask ‘n’ Flask Liquors at Camden and Leigh powered one of the best columns I ever wrote, incorporating Jungian psychology to analyze my time at that dump as a lowly teenage stockperson running booze to a drunk down the street. Similarly, when Gordon Biersch on San Fernando finally bit the dust, I wrote a column, also one of my best ever. The piece surveyed GB history, my time there as a steinholder, as well as the restaurant’s downfall in the context of other downtown failures over the last 30 years. GB wasn’t the only three-decade run. Britannia Arms Almaden hit 30 without closing, so I wrote a similar column about my relationship to the place over the years. Same deal with Stevens Music in Willow Glen, which closed 35 years ago, but when the time came to toss out the old Lowrey organ from my youth, I wrote about its history on Lincoln Avenue. Much of Silicon Alleys for 13 years now has dealt with such polarities: beginnings and endings; creation and destruction; inner and outer; home and abroad; native and foreign; and the resulting relativity of time due to one never escaping his hometown. As someone part South Asian and part Willow Glen, I’ll deem mystical the ways in which the evolution of both San Jose and the columnist are inseparable from each other. Make sense? Of course it does. All of which logically leads to travel. Travel writing, regardless of what the snobbish upmarket writers will tell you, can be as simple as merging the home turf with foreign turf. If you’re a natural at writing, this happens automatically, so in my case San Jose gets grafted onto any place I travel and vice versa. I never really leave my own city, my own corner of the world, as Cavafy wrote. This year it was Chiang Mai, Thailand, Dublin, Ireland, and Trieste, Italy. In each case, the trip helped me further understand the San Jose predicament. Lastly, let’s not forget literature: 2018 was a banner year for women novelists, especially of the international daughter-of-immigrant demographic, a handful of which made it into this column. I am grateful to be interconnected with all of the above subjects and ideas. Here’s to a rip-roaring 2019!

GET ME OUTTA HERE Looking back on it now, Elon Musk’s launching of a Tesla Roadster into space serves as an apt metaphor for 2018.

T

HE YEAR BEGAN with a puff of smoke as California’s legalization of recreational cannabis use went into effect on Jan. 1. Everyone from cardholders to newbies and recidivists lined up outside of pot clubs all over San Jose—the only South Bay city to allow dispensaries.

Even those who don’t indulge in the devil’s lettuce could be forgiven for wondering whether they were in the grips of some kind of terrible trip. Paranoia and the kind of magical thinking many of us engaged in while listening to Pink Floyd in our freshman dorm rooms seemed to be the norm in 2018. Over the course of this year, it has become painfully clear just how much influence social media has over our daily lives. (Government shutdown

anyone?) January began with Facebook introducing major algorithm changes. In an effort to combat the proliferation of fake news and foreign influence campaigns, the social network deemphasized all news—effectively emphasizing your crazy uncle’s meme rampages and your ex-lover’s vaguebooking. And it’s only gotten worse from there, as continued revelations of tech giants playing fast and loose with our personal data have continued to surface. Google even tried to build a search engine for China, codenamed “Dragonfly,” that, according to The Intercept, would require logins before searching, track user

locations and archive personal search histories with a Chinese partner that would have “unilateral access” to the data. Google CEO described the initiative as “early stage” since only 215 employees, according to an internal memo that Google ordered recipients to delete, were

working full-time on Dragonfly.

And then there’s Elon Musk. The man behind everyone’s favorite electric car and those awesome reusable rockets started the year by shooting a Tesla Roadster into space. He proceeded to make headlines by smoking a blunt on Joe Rogan’s podcast, beefing with rapper Azealia Banks on Twitter, messing with global markets through a series of erratic tweets, planning to go to Burning Man with girlfriend and electronic music composer Grimes, then announcing he would not go to Burning Man on account of an SEC investigation into whether he had misled investors. In September he accepted a $20 million handslap but was redeemed for all his craziness when the Model 3 started breaking sales and safety records. Beyond the foibles of the tech industry, there was plenty more to shake our heads about. The #MeToo movement took down Dominic

Caserta; a subcontractor working on a downtown development used slave labor to erect a pair of highrises; and Stanford professor Christine Blasey Ford stood up to the now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh by recounting her memories of a high school party where she says he forcibly groped her. Boxy apartment complexes sprouted on the former sites that once gave the valley its character, San Jose lost two more hardware stores, Lowe’s and Orchard Supply. Someone even stole the freakin’ old neon sign! Now, where are people going to buy blue tarps to live under? Oh, and electric scooters absolutely took over Silicon Valley. It’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. This final issue of the year is all about looking back on all the strange, infuriating and preposterous things that went down in 2018 and saying, “Sayonara!”

San Jose City Hall booted a marble statue of Christopher Columbus. Public pressure from indigenous and Latino activists was cited, but truth was, the oversized tchotchke matched grandma Carmella’s living room better than the modernist municipal building designed by pervy architect Richard Meier. The tribute to the European colonizer was gifted to the city decades ago by a local ItalianAmerican club, which volunteered to find a new piazza for the polarizing monument.

FEBRUARY Failing Up After resigning as Milpitas city manager for allegedly misspending taxpayer money to cover his personal legal battles, Tom Williams had no problem finding well-paying jobs, thanks to a little help from his friends. He worked as a private land-use consultant while shopping around for another public sector gig, which he finally landed in his hometown of Millbrae despite his reputation.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Folks who donated to the bond campaign under John Lindner’s purview were shocked to learn that the Franklin-McKinley School District trustee had been spending it to remodel his home and jet-set with his family, among other things. As a condition of his plea deal, Lindner relinquished his post and agreed to pay back $18,550—more than $10,000 short of the sum he stole.

DOUBLING DOWN As allegations of mishandled sexual abuse claims began to mount against Presentation High, patrons responded by more than doubling their donations to the embattled parochial school. Alumnae director Kristin Cooke Schneider boasted about the cash haul, saying support has “never been stronger” and that community members “have a positive shared experience, and they sent that message loud and clear.” They sent a message, all right, and it didn’t sit well with the former students accusing the school of ignoring their claims of sexual misconduct.

WINCHESTER GOES HOLLYWOOD San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House, a Victorian mansion rendered long ago into an architectural oddity by a rich widow’s paranoia, made its big-screen debut. MARCH An enterprising East Palo Alto resident tracked down the guy who burglarized his home by matching surveillance footage to the suspect’s music videos. For Victor Bell, a 24-year-old Redwood City rapper known as Mummy 500, life apparently inspired his art. Police say Bell, who was already on parole for residential burglary, rapped about breaking down doors and making off with stolen goods. They arrested him when he showed up to a meeting with his parole officer wearing jewelry from both burglaries.

VALLEY VOTES It was a scandal of epic proportions with profound implications for democracy in the digital age. When the Guardian broke news that the

Cambridge Analytica firm misused data of scores of millions of Facebook users, it sparked outrage on both sides of the Atlantic. In the U.S., it raised questions about the effect of voter manipulation on Donald Trump rise. Across the pond, it set off state-led inquiries into its sway on public support for Brexit.

Bloody Hell Capping off a stunning downfall for Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes, the federal Securities and Exchange Commission accused her blood-testing startup of tricking investors by lying about everything from how the technology worked to how much revenue it was raking in. The federal complaint cemented the legacy of Theranos— and its once-high-flying CEO—as the latest cautionary tale of Silicon Valley hype and hubris.

ICE to Meet You Bay Area counties pride themselves on their “sanctuary” policies, which basically forbid local authorities from automatically cooperating with federal immigration agents. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, however, managed to gain entry into local jails. San Francisco Sheriff Vicki Hennessy apologized and Santa Clara Sheriff Laurie Smith called it “a mistake.”

BUILDING BLOCKCHAIN This year, speculators got hot on Bitcoin before losing their shirts. Reports of people betting the farm on the new cryptocurrency made headlines and then… the bottom fell out. But 2018 also marked the year that people really started paying attention to blockchain. It’s still unclear if there is a future for cryptocurrency, but plenty of Silicon Valley thinkers believe that blockchain technology—Bitcoin’s foundation—will be a game-changer. By decentralizing and encrypting data, it will make the world a better place. Now, where have we heard that before?

FUND AND GAMES

#CASERTATOO

A Nonprofit Quarterly investigation into sexual harassment at the billiondollar Silicon Valley Community Foundation rocked the donoradvised fund manager to its core. Revelations that one of its top fundraisers, the magnetic Mari Ellen Loijens, would bully or sexually harass her subordinates led to a brutal public reckoning that resulted in her departure along with that of CEO Emmett Carson.

Santa Clara Councilman Dominic Caserta faced allegations of nearly two decades of sexually harassing, bullying or groping girls and women, including a report that he wore nothing more than a bath towel around campaign workers. During his campaign for a Santa Clara County supervisor seat, two young campaign staffers came to Metro to expose his misconduct, prompting Caserta to resign from the council, suspend his campaign and otherwise withdraw from public life.

Barrister Buds One of Silicon Valley’s stodgiest law firm’s decided to cash in on cannabis. Hopkins & Carley attorneys Chuck Reed—who as San Jose mayor initially took a hard line of marijuana decriminalization—and colleague Mark Heyl spearheaded the firm’s fledgling cannabis practice.

DOUBLE TROUBLE Silicon Valley Community Foundation CEO Emmett Carson and his second-in-charge Mari Ellen Loijens were ousted amid claims that the latter brazenly harassed and humiliated staff at the billion-dollar philanthropic juggernaut.

Oh, the Caucasity Campbell Union High trustee Matthew Dean thought he’d school some teens by whitesplaining how to toughen up in the face of adversity— even if they’re called the N-word by a peer. The two-term schools official and former Campbell mayor used a parable about fat-shaming his son to illustrate how kids need to toughen up and find the “diamond.” One 17-year-old recipient of Dean’s wisdom begged to differ. “When you’re called the N-word, there’s no diamond in that,” Muskaan Sandu said. “There is danger in that.” Dean opted against running for re-election.

OVERNIGHT SUCCESS Dopesmoker, by San Jose stoner metal trio Sleep, is arguably the most ambitious metal album of all time. The hour-long single track takes everything heavy from the genre, slows it down by about a hundred beats per minute, and creates something so earthshaking it approaches biblical proportions. More than two decades after their initial breakup, Sleep returned, releasing The Sciences on April 20 (natch). The album has garnered high critical praise and serves as the soundtrack to many a smoke sesh.

JUNE Total Recall Aaron Persky, the Santa Clara County judge who became the face of rape culture after sentencing Stanford rapist Brock Turner to mere months in jail, got democratically ousted from the bench, despite opposition from a local legal community that feared it would chill the bench’s independence. It marked the first successful judicial recall in California in nearly nine decades.

2018 YEAR IN REVIEW THE DON ELEVATOR Don Morrissey’s professional descent from lieutenant to sergeant and then deputy was no secret at the Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Office or in the ranks of the Deputy Sheriff ’s Association he presided over as president. But the details that led to him losing his sergeant stripes didn’t become public until he appealed his demotion using his union’s funds. Records appended to his court petition offered a rare glimpse into the law enforcement disciplinary process, which is far more opaque in California than most other states, and cost Morrissey’s political allies—like sheriff hopeful John Hirokawa—dearly.

Case Closed On Oct. 12, 1974, 19-year-old newlywed Arlis Perry was found slain at the altar of the Stanford Memorial Church. Someone had rammed an icepick through her skull and violated her with church candles. Semen was found on a nearby kneeler and a palm print was imprinted on one of the candles, but it wasn’t enough to catch the killer, so the case went cold for 43 years. In June of 2018, investigators found evidence pointing to Stephen Crawford, the campus security guard who told cops he discovered the body the morning after the murder. But just as police were closing in on his San Jose apartment, Crawford picked up a gun and took his own life.

For more than three decades, “Mural de la Raza” captivated onlookers with its detailed tapestry of Chicano culture and civil rights history. The artist, Jose Mesa Velasquez, created the painting on the side of the old Payless ShoeSource building in San Jose’s East Side with help from a local community center. The beloved mural mysteriously vanished one night—that is, all but for the face of the Virgin de Guadalupe— prompting a public outcry. The artist wound up suing the landlord,

BITCONNED It’s an old con, but with a digital twist. A snail-mailed letter threatens to expose some deep, dark secret unless the recipient coughs up a small fortune in Bitcoin to keep it hushhush. It’s unclear how many fell for the scam, but the Santa Clara County DA issued a PSA of sorts to caution people against taking the bait.

APP FLAP Sealed documents from an old lawsuit by a defunct app became an unlikely thorn in the side for Facebook, which was already reeling from a year of damaging exposure that began with the gutpunch that was the Cambridge Analytica scandal. A 2015 complaint filed by Six4Three over a bikini photo-finding app called Pikini made headlines this fall when the U.K. government acquired sensitive records as part of an inquiry into #FakeNews. The trove of questionably acquired data

suggested that Facebook considered selling user data prior to 2014— something the social media giant has denied doing.

DECEMBER MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME The S.F. 49ers gave the star treatment to a fan who’d been wrongfully imprisoned for 20 years for a murder he didn’t commit. The team flew Malcolm Scott and his brother out to a game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, where they reportedly rolled out the red carpet for him, offering a tour of the venue, a chance to meet the team’s GM John Lynch and

one of his all-time favorite players, linebacker Keena Turner.

The Google Effect Google’s plans to build a new headquarters in downtown San Jose cleared a critical hurdle when the city sold more than 10 acres of public land to the search and advertising giant. That’s a small fraction of the development footprint, which is expected to transform 50-plus acres around the Diridon Station into a dense urban hub of offices, shops, eateries and public plazas linked by pathways and adorned with public heart. It’s a dream come true for business boosters, but a source of anxiety for residents who fear the new corporate neighbor will exacerbate already exorbitant housing costs.

COLD FASHIONED Annual holiday culture wars and the ongoing #MeToo reckoning ignited debate about whether radio stations should play the 74-year-old Christmas classic, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Throughout the U.S., several radio stations pulled the song off the air, igniting heated debates on TV news and social media. San Francisco radio station KOIT initially yanked the 1940s duet for its predatory undertones. But uproar from listeners prompted the station to change its mind.

TECHIE TRANSPORT E-scooters absolutely took over Silicon Valley this year.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo gave electric scooter companies an ultimatum: Get off the sidewalks or split. The mayor advised Bird, Lime and other scooter startups to come up with a geo-fencing feature to prevent riders from traveling along sidewalks. Otherwise, he threatened to ban them outright.

PESCATARIAN

VEGGIE-LICIOUS Eating healthy doesn’t have to feel like a sacrifice, or send you out of your way—just go to Loving Hut.

Eat Well Start the new year by embracing a realistic diet while still enjoying every bite BY JOHN DYKE

T

HE NEW YEAR is upon us again, and so are the new year’s resolutions. Among all the pledges we will take—making more time for family, exercising, finally taking that trip abroad—a healthier diet is bound to be one of the most common.

While I can’t help with exercise regimen or your travel itinerary, I always have something to say about food. In 2018 I chose to start a “flexitarian” diet, which included eating vegetarian or vegan two to three days a week. I would say, for the most part, I

was fairly successful—probably scoring somewhere around a 75 percent success rate. This year I resolve to increase that number to three or four days, in hopes of achieving a final goal of five days a week by 2020. Not everyone is satisfied with the flexitarian method. Some may prefer to go all in on an extreme dietary change. Others will find making a small but easy-to-keep change more appealing and less prone to failure. Which diet is right for you? Well, that depends. Some are able to trim their waistlines by eating mostly meat and cutting out carbs; others believe going vegan is the only way

to live a healthy and moral life. Whatever dietary change one may be considering, finding new types of palatable food that conform to the new meal plan can be challenging. Hopefully the following list can help. Below you will find five schools of thought on how to get to a healthier you, along with the most important part: where you can eat delicious food without cheating.

VEGAN Cutting out all animal products is now easier than ever, as more and more restaurants in the eco- and health-conscious Bay Area offer vegan-friendly menu items. Loving Hut, perhaps the most popular worldwide vegan chain makes it simple. Everything on their menu is vegan, and with three locations throughout the South Bay, you won’t have to travel far. On the mom-and-pop side of vegan, Good Karma in downtown San Jose is a pub-style vegan eatery that features a wide array of dining choices like

You don’t have to be a Pisces to go pescatarian. It simply means that the only flesh you eat comes in the form of fish—molluscs are cool, too. If you’re thinking it sounds too expensive to eat sushi and oysters all day, don’t worry. Most pescatarians I know are essentially vegetarians who partake of ocean delights only on occasion. Plus, there are ways to satisfy a fish fix without breaking the bank. I suggest any Mexi mariscos joint, such as Día de Pesca or Maverick’s Mexican Grill; both are longtime favorites of mine and serve up some of the best and freshest fish tacos around. For table service dining, the locally founded chain The Fish Market has three locations throughout the South Bay; there you will find a terrific oyster bar and tasty mesquite-grilled fish.

BEEFY BITES Chowing down on protein while avoiding carbs is one dieting strategy. seek to limit the intake of carbohydrates. When it comes to loading up on meat for a fair price, all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue joints are the way to go. While Gen Korean BBQ House is the most popular choice, their wait times can be excruciating. Relative newcomer Q-Pot is usually much less busy, they also feature a sweet tablet ordering system and they even have hot pot available—a rarity in the Korean barbecue world. If you can’t wait to cook your own meat, then might I suggest ordering some expert American barbecue (sans the sugary sauce, of course) by the pound from any of our local barbecue joints. Smoking Pig BBQ’s ribs and burnt ends are world-class, while newcomer Mesquite and Oak has some of the most legit brisket I’ve ever had in California.

Vegetarian While vegetarianism and veganism are quite similar, the biggest and most telling difference is that vegans do not eat eggs, dairy or honey, while vegetarians often do. It may not seem like that big of a deal, but consider the fact that most standard baked goods contain some form of dairy or eggs. A favorite of veg-heads is the aptly named chain Veggie Grill, which offers everything from salads to burgers and even comfort foods, such as mashed potatoes and mac and

cheese. Jerusalem Grill in Campbell has a veg-friendly Middle East feast called the Jerusalem Veggie Plate that features dolmas, baba ghanouj, hummus, falafel and tabbouleh. Indian food is also another favorite of vegetarians, and one of my favorites for a quick, tasty and inexpensive Indian lunch is Chaat Café; with a lunch special starting at $6, their malai kofta plate—with its buttery, spicy sauce—is terrific and a mango lassi is a must to help quench the heat.

Flexitarian Probably the most wishy-washy of all the options, this is the regimen for those who like to eat healthy but don’t want their choices limited by restrictive diets. For this diet it’s important to select places that have a healthy menu with lots of veggie-friendly options, while still featuring some carnivorous delights. Aqui has long been one of my favorites for fresh, healthy organic cuisine at a very reasonable price point. Their menu is a fusion of Tex-Mex and Asian cuisine, and features a nice variety like Filipino chicken adobo, Mexican enchiladas and even vegetarian Thai peanut bowls. They also have five locations, so one is never far away. New-to-us Mendocino Farms is another spot that features mostly vegetarian fare with a carnivorous twist. The best part about Mendo is their menu is seasonal and there’s always something new to discover. Both of these choices do very well with the adult beverages, as Aqui’s swirls are legendary for their strength, and Mendo offers beer and wine samples (aptly named “bamples”) to help diners choose their libations.

Truly Inspired NUMU’s new show, ‘Circle of Truth,’ works like a Rorschach test for artists BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR

T

HE IDEA WAS simple enough. Over the course of seven years, 49 artists created paintings inspired by a single theme: “Truth.”. They collaborated— albeit remotely and virtually— until 49 smaller, yet not less significant, truths emerged.

The results, now on display at the New Museum of Los Gatos, are a revelation. Not so much in the individual cultural artifacts themselves but in culmination, as they offer a window on how each of the artists think. In this way, “Circle of Truth” works a bit like an old-fashioned

psychological exam. It is a Rorschach test for the ages. It is the artist’s psyche we see on the canvas, formulating thoughts or shouts or dreams. Co-curators Laura Hipke and Shane Guffogg asked participating artists to play a painterly version of the surrealist game exquisite corpse—a.k.a. the Telephone Game. The rules were detailed but fairly loose. The first artist in the chain, Guffogg himself, started the project with his painting, a Rothko-esque take on a blurred, madras plaid. Without signing the work, he then sent it to the second artist in the chain along with a blank linen canvas. Keeping the theme of truth in mind, each artist then had

two weeks to come up with a painted response before sending their piece on to the next artist in the circle. Every painting is 20 square inches. They are arranged on NUMU’s walls in the order they were created. The curators also asked that the artist write an essay about their experience once the painting was finished. Excerpts from those essays hang underneath the work. For his part, Guffogg had this to say: “The Golden Mean is the mathematical code of nature that gives the flower instructions on how to grow its petals.” His initial foray into philosophizing later gave way to a doleful anecdote or two. Lita Albuquerque, Artist No. 33, had some trouble. “I could not get anywhere and was very frustrated and covered it over many times as it just was not happening,” she writes. But as you move about the gallery, you pay more attention to the shared visual language that jumps from canvas to canvas. You can see the gears of each artist’s mind turning as they interpret and recapitulate the “visiting” work in their own style. In the run-

CIRCLE OF TRUTH New Museum of Los Gatos numulosgatos.org

up to Albuquerque’s angry gray brushstrokes, you watch the forms and colors evolve to meet her painting as if in real time. Cheryl Ekstrom describes her all-white No. 28 as “a retaliation” against No. 27. It looks like a block of freshly cast plaster that’s cracked after falling from a great height. Greg Colson sees a face in the center of that white slab. He uses a watery black outline to shape someone’s masked profile, adding in the words “bandage,” “bandana” and “blindfold.” Alex Gross senses something clinical about Colson’s work. At the top of his canvas, he paints in all capital letters: PROTECTION RESTRICTION ADDICTION. Beneath that, two women appear in an illustrated style that recalls a colorless Roy Lichtenstein, as if they’d been drawn monochromatically with a fine lead pencil. A nurse from the 1950s inoculates her patient, a contemporary girl who’s holding onto her iPhone while also sporting a neck brace. Pale peach polka dots appear at random intervals across the canvas. Those abstract dots make an appearance in the next four paintings. If there’s a single truth that emerges from the exhibit, it’s that artists like polka dots. Art exhibits that claim to be immersive experiences flood 21stcentury audiences with too much audio or visual stimuli. There’s no need for the viewer to come to any conclusion about it. You experience the work and then walk away from it. “Circle of Truth” redefines what “immersive” can mean. Following the numbers on the walls feels like you're going on a scavenger hunt or putting together a puzzle that’s challenging, but not impossible, to solve. The progression of numbered paintings requires a certain level of engagement with the entire organizing principle. You want to suss out the way each artist moved ahead with the project (or didn’t, in a very few cases). “Circle of Truth” brings the museum-goer in close, the way they must have done before the analog world turned into an infinite number of zeros and ones.

ALI WONG

GOOD TIMES

Wed-Thu, Sold Out The Improv, San Jose

Thu, 9pm, Free The Caravan, San Jose

Two Netflix specials and two babies later, comedian Ali Wong is taking center stage again—this time not pregnant (we think) but with the same comedic force and exaggerated stage presence that brought her into the standup limelight. The San Francisco-born and -raised performer gained a serious following after her 2016 special, Baby Cobra, which she shot while seven months pregnant with her first child. Managing to tackle topics as disparate as diapers and foreplay in the same routine, somehow Wong manages to keep the crowd on her side, even as she plunges baby bump first into her crude, rude and selfabsorbed on-stage persona. (AS)

Keep things groovy and psychedelic this holiday season at the always-reliable Caravan Lounge, which presents Holiday Good Times N’ Cheer! with three local heavy hitters: the Magick Blues Band, Casual Vibes and Zach Freitas. Encompassing the realms of psychedelic, garage and folk rock, the night will start out mellow, with the soulful sounds of singer-songwriter Freitas, whose one-man show draws inspiration from crooners like Elliott Smith and Nick Drake. Casual Vibes provides exactly that: a perfect musical backdrop to hanging out with friends, while Magick Blues Band closes the night with their heavy and soul-inflected sound pulled straight from the ’60s. CONCERT FOR AARON

Thu, 9pm, $10+ The Continental, San Jose

Fri, 8pm, $10 The Ritz, San Jose

Los Angeles-based DJ and producer Falcons is no stranger to the hiphop scene. Even before signing to producer and DJ A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold records in 2015, he was a regular at live events like Coachella and Boiler Room, mixing and performing alongside some of the scene’s heaviest hitters. Three years and dozens of collabs later, he’s promoting his latest joint release with San Jose-based producer B.Lewis, titled Daydrift. The melodic, trap-influenced five-track EP features guest appearances by Bay Area rapper P-Lo, GoldLink and Jazz Cartier and doesn’t disappoint: Prepare for an extended set of hypnotic and uptempo beats. (AS)

In remembrance of San Jose’s Aaron Anaya, who tragically passed away in a DUI crash in November, local and out-of-town acts will be paying tribute to his life and legacy at this special fundraiser show and celebration. Many of the groups performing were friends of Anaya, who was also a musician, and some will even be playing Aaron’s original songs. The evening’s lineup includes San Jose-based singersongwriter Try the Pie, San Jose duo Spit Lake, Oakland dream-pop outfit New Circle, San Jose indie rockers Eastern Westerner and Dinners, and Los Angeles lo-fi group Sprain. All proceeds will go to Aaron’s family. (AS)

ROB SCHNEIDER Fri-Sat, $30+ The Improv, San Jose Making his debut first as a writer and then as a cast member on Saturday Night Live over 30 years ago, Rob Schneider is one of those Hollywood enigmas that’s done it all but can’t stop doing more. He’s had a role in more than 40 films since the early ’90s, starring as the hapless Deuce Bigalow, a fish tank cleaner-turned-male prostitute in 1999. His latest venture is a TV show called Real Rob. Schneider returns to his standup comedy roots with a new routine that’s packed full of his characteristic voices and exaggerated mannerisms. (AS)

MICAH ALFARO Sat, 7pm, Free Station X Salon, Campbell San Jose-based mixed media artist and muralist Micah Alfaro will install his latest art piece at Campbell’s Station X Salon while onlookers enjoy live music, drinks and bites. His newest mural will adorn the salon’s spacious front windows, which he’ll be painting live throughout the course of the evening. The local artist specializes in intricately drawn, detailed color and monochromatic murals and displays that incorporate everything from woodwork to spray paint. Free and open to the public, Alfaro’s last show of the year is for one night only: Be sure to peep at the culmination of a year’s worth of artwork in an equally artsy space. (AS)

HOLIDAY HANGOVER Sat, 9pm, $8+ The Ritz, San Jose That extended stretch of time after Christmas and before New Year’s Eve is a period of great ambiguity for those who are visiting home for the holidays. Presents have been opened, awkward political arguments have been made, family dinners have been eaten, but it’s not yet the new year and the hometown cabin fever feels are real. Don’t fear: the Holiday Hangover is here. Presented by It’s Relative! productions, this all-night dance party features curated jams by Memory Bank (Hunter Chollet and Marcus Leonardo) and DJ Adam Jay to get you over that in-between holiday slump and ready for the rock-n-rollin’, rowdy new year festivities. THE ENGLISH BEAT PIANO BRUNCH Sun, 8pm, $20+ The Ritz, San Jose

Sun, 11am Poor House Bistro, San Jose

For nearly 40 years, The English Beat has been crossing musical genres and defying the limits of what it means to be both punk rock and British. As one of the first groups in the UK to fuse ska and punk, they’ve continued to evolve their sound through a number of studio albums and associated side projects over the years. On the heels of their latest release, Here We Go Love—the band’s first new album since 1982’s Special Beat Service— The Beat return to San Jose alongside local ska and reggae five-piece, Monkey. Move over, dinner and a movie. These days, it’s all about brunch and a piano—at least at San Jose’s Poor House Bistro. The last Sunday of 2018 starts with a New Orleans-themed piano brunch hosted by local “bourbon-esque” crooner and one-man show Johnny Fabulous. Boogie down while snacking on beignets and hear songs from the Great American Songbook over griddle cakes and grits. The Poor House Bistro, known for serving up homestyle Cajun food since 2005, spotlights different musicians daily, but takes its first foray into daytime entertainment with its weekly Sunday brunch performances. metroactive FILM

NETFLIX AND WIN Though the film was released straight to Netflix (with select theaters screening it), ‘ Roma’ is a clear frontrunner in the Oscars race.

Year in Film From a resurrected Orson Welles project to a Netflix masterpiece, the best of 2018 BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

S

NAP YOUR FINGERS, like Thanos, and half of all existing motion pictures turn into a shower of disintegrating pixels. Imposing scarcity is a tragic task, but it had to be done to make room for more tentpoles. Just ask the FilmStruck proprietors who made so much vanish, so that deserving stockholders might affix ermine mud flaps to their Porsche Cayennes. The process needs no empurpled

Josh Brolin, though. The decay-prone qualities of an all-digital media is bad enough—as opposed to 35mm, which can survive decades in a frozen dump. Preserving all this digital cinema is going to be a technical challenge for anyone watching 100 years from now. (Of course, you could be like that nowinfamous professor from Lafayette College who, in the Washington Post opined that the loss of FilmStruck just cleared the deck of a lot of moldy old films enshrining racism and sexism. So why not trash it and make room for something new?) Such academic nuance may be

immaterial to our descendants, roasting radioactive rats on rusty rebar spits, as the Sayir of the Mov-ee pantomimes the plot of Avengers: Infinity Wars around the fire. But the contradiction of supposedly having everything at hand—we certainly don’t—and being able to figure out exactly what is available is aggravating. So much of the lineup on streaming services is for-us-to-knowand-for-you-to-find out, a self-fulfilling forecast of “content” unwatched. Happily, Roma, did build in the good old way of word of mouth. And all honor for exhibitors such as 3Below, taking a gamble that people would want to see a real movie in a real theater even while it played on Netflix. Yet some of these names will be unfamiliar. The documentary ACTIVE MEASURES took the spot reserved for WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? Tender and moving as that profile of Mr Rogers was, you ought to give primacy to the kind of documentary filmmaking that could get a reporter killed. The analysis

of Putin skullduggery was as menacing as supervillainy in any Marvel epic. BLACKKKLANSMAN and BLACK PANTHER are forever linked by titles. The first is a New York film school-style attack on a wild tale—based on a true story the way a cube of bouillon is based on an ox. It’s a reminder of how much infuriating fun Spike Lee can be. There’s still a point on that Spike, after all. And there isn’t a white American alive who should miss Harry Belafonte’s lecture on the weight of cinema. Slurping megarhino aside—it’s for the kids, be nice—Black Panther may be another Wizard of Oz someday. COLD WAR, which opens in January, is an ironical black and white romance of missed connections amid the Soviet days. It has the lyricism of the best of Nabokov. FIRST REFORMED’s somberness—and its mussy ending—make it a challenge, but Paul Schrader’s mystical cinephilia deserves all the honors its getting. Speaking of cinephilia, the finished THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND shows the limberness of late-period

(an endearing Regina King) intervening between the friendly young imbeciles she employs and her swine of a boss. Luca Guadagnino’s deeply frightening 1970s-set SUSPIRIA remake is my idea of a solstice movie, since a season of darkness is perfect for tales of death and night and blood. More on its satanic powers later when Amazon decides to “drop” it for streaming (the word is significant, somehow—it can mean either “bestow” or “get rid of”). As for the worst movie of 2018? Pass. I barely had time to see all the good ones.

TEN ANGRY FILMS Cold Wars, Black Panthers and Cocktail Waitresses top this year’s list.

Best Films of 2018

S

HOWING UP IS the most important part—theaters still provided social protest and incisive drama to go with all the irresistibly crazier pixilated fantasy. And then there was the year-end triumph of Roma. First released on Netflix, it can also be viewed at theaters in 11 cities, so that audiences can feast on Alphonso Cuaron’s beautiful 70mm composition.

MUSIC HISTORY Guitarist Angelo Rossi, a.k.a. AJ Crawdaddy, draws from the many blues traditions.

Blues Brother Veteran guitarist AJ Crawdaddy keeps the West Coast blues fires burning BY BILL KOPP

T

HE WEST COAST blues tradition is built upon the styles and achievements of blues greats and is heavily seasoned with a liberal dose of good, old-fashioned rock & roll. Palo Alto-born guitarist Angelo J. Rossi—known to fans as AJ Crawdaddy—is a product of that tradition and has been a fixture of the local blues scene for decades.

Rossi, who plays Redwood City’s Club Fox this week, began his formal introduction to the blues at age

17, almost by accident. He bought a ticket to a Chambers Brothers show at Winterland. “They canceled, and a fellow by the name of Albert King came out on stage instead,” Rossi recalls. He was immediately impressed. “This big guy had a Flying V [guitar] that he played left-handed and upside down.” King launched into one of his signature tunes. “He played ‘Crosscut Saw,’” Rossi says, “and that was that.” The blues had officially won Rossi’s heart. That same year, Rossi’s mother bought him his first serious guitar, a brand new Epiphone Riviera. Rossi had already proved to his parents that he was committed to playing, so after used

a rented instrument for some time, he was thrilled to receive an instrument of his own. The gift took on special meaning, as his mother was suffering from cancer and died the next year. A half-century later, Rossi still owns and plays that treasured electric guitar. “I fell in love with the ‘three Kings’ – Albert, Freddie and B.B. King,” Rossi says. “I saw B.B. King open for the Rolling Stones in 1968. He tore that stage up!” Growing up in the Bay Area,, Rossi took every opportunity to see his blues heroes when they came through town. He was especially inspired by bands that included a horn section; that approach would greatly influence the direction Rossi would follow in his own blues journey. Along the way, Rossi’s musical path found him playing in musical idioms well beyond the blues. When rock band Pablo Cruise wanted to add more musical muscle to its sound, the group recruited Rossi on guitar and vocals. Working with the band in studios like Sausalito’s famed Record Plant, Rossi became friendly with a wide variety of artists. “It was

basically a family unit,” Rossi says. “Everybody hung out together, got stoned together and worked on each other’s records.” Rossi’s backing vocals can be heard on Jefferson Starship’s Freedom at Point Zero album. Still, his commitment to the blues remained strong. Even when onstage playing breezy, soft rock hits like Pablo Cruise’s “Whatcha Gonna Do?” and “Love Will Find a Way,” Rossi provided bluesy texture to the music. “Whenever I play, I always blues something up,” he says with a laugh. “I just get sneaky. I have that ability to be able to sneak the blues in, no matter what genre I’m playing.” These days, Rossi maintains his own studio, The Cave. And it’s there he has recorded two albums to date under the AJ Crawdaddy moniker. The records—2015’s Vaporized and Slow Cookin’ from 2017—display Rossi’s love of the blues as well as his skill at showcasing the genre’s various styles. “I try to make well-rounded records,” he explains, “ones that aren’t just steeped in traditional blues, but that also touch on Chicago, Kansas City and even West Coast blues. Because I’m a West Coast guy!” Rossi’s music also draws from the jump blues tradition, a late 1940s style that music historians describe as a missing link between big band swing, blues and rock & roll. Both in the studio and on live dates, Rossi uses a horn section—featuring select players from the region’s blues scene—whenever he can. But when he can’t, or when the music calls for something different, he calls old friend and harmonica player Jim Dewrance. “Think of the harmonica as a poor man’s horn section,” Rossi says with a good-natured laugh. “It’s the ‘Mississippi saxophone.’” Rossi has deep friendship with many in the Bay Area blues scene, and that’s a key to his popularity and success. Most of the musicians who play with him have been bandmates for more than two decades. “We’re playing blues, and that’s a simple language,” he says. “And it’s a very fun language.”

2019 | THE COMING YEAR

To my homies and to the friends I have yet to meet: It is my wish that you find the best events over the next 365 days. In them, may you find the joy you seek, be it in the crowd, on a stage, hung on a wall, in the sung or spoken words of others, or in your very own pen. I hope you write and read the most thought-provoking things, stoking action from within. I adore this gorgeous valley we call home and there is so much to be seen, heard, tasted, felt, wondered, wandered and experienced here. I hope to bring you as much of it as I can on these pages. Events are just tiny, scheduled building blocks of life—and life is for the living. May this year bring you wisdom and smiles. = MUST SEE

AdviceAmy@AOL.com

Some will say you should be flattered that these men are showing interest. These people don’t quite get that men hitting on you because they read your sex addiction memoir are appealing on the level of a barista who hits on you by drawing a penis and a question mark in your latte. As for your observation that most of these guys are attempting to date out of their league, men actually seem to have evolved to try to do that—to be all, “As I see it, those Victoria’s Secret Angels just haven’t met the right chronically unemployed, creatively hygienic neckbeard who still lives with his mother.” This seemingly delusional overconfidence in men on the prowl aligns with how evolutionary psychologists Martie Haselton and David Buss observe that both men and women seem to have evolved to sometimes perceive the world inaccurately, seeing our opportunities or potential danger in beneficially distorted ways. This sometimes involves

over-perception—erring on the side of seeing more than what’s actually there—and it sometimes involves under-perception, seeing less than what’s actually there. Because, for a woman, having sex can lead to nine months of soccer ball-like ankles and other pregnancy fun, plus (eventually) a child to feed, women seem to have evolved a protective bias toward under-perceiving men’s level of commitment. Men, on the other hand, have a chance to pass on their genes every time they have sex. So they tend to have a sexual overperception bias— seeing signs of mere friendliness or even utter apathy as “This babe wants me!” That’s probably what’s going on here—men erring on the side of “ya never know!” Let them down with dignity. But perhaps a better first option would be to answer only the part of the email about the book, totally ignoring the part where they gracefully ask you out.

Could you please educate me in the nuances of “I’m sorry?” My girlfriend sometimes says my apologies don’t count because of the tone of voice I use when I say “I’m sorry.” She said I sound “resentful instead of apologetic.” Shouldn’t she just accept the apology and not split hairs like this?—Man In Apology Doghouse Ideally, your tone of voice in apologizing simply communicates “I’m sorry,” not “I’m sorry you’re such a total idiot about this.” Whenever you speak, the emotional packaging—your tone and attitude— is an integral part of the message. That’s because, as evolutionary psychologist Laith Al-Shawaf and his colleagues explain, one function of human emotions is to act as signals, broadcasting our feelings, perceptions and intentions. Accordingly, an apology in a snarly package—words of regret delivered in a resentful tone—reads not as an apology but as an evasion of responsibility in an apology suit. For an apology to count for us psychologically it needs to be backed with sincere remorse. This isn’t to say you have to throw yourself weeping at a person’s feet because you left the

toothpaste cap-free for the 500 millionth time. Your tone just needs to translate to a sort of pledge to try to do better— which suggests that you value the person and the relationship, which allows them to trust you going forward. But let’s say you’re snarling “sorry!” because you feel whatever was expected of you (that you fell short of) was ultimately unfair. In that case, it’s better to instead say, “I see you’re feeling upset, and I think there’s a misunderstanding here that we need to discuss.” If things are too heated in the moment, you can ask to talk later. This tack is sure to have a far better outcome than the classic unapologetic apology—“I insincerely apologize for the thing you say I did,” which tends to be met with, “I’m so sorry you’ll be taking this army blanket and sleeping on the lawn chair...indefinitely.”

I’m the female author of a funny memoir about sex addiction and relationships. Unfortunately, I now have male readers asking me on dates via email, even if they don’t live in this country! To put it politely, few are men I’d ever be interested in. Also, it feels creepy to be asked out because somebody read all about my sex life. How do I kindly turn them down?—Disturbed

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): I suspect that in 2019

you'll be able to blend a knack for creating more stability with an urge to explore and seek greater freedom. How might this unusual confluence be expressed in practical ways? Maybe you'll travel to reconnect with your ancestral roots. Or perhaps a faraway ally or influence will help you feel more at home in the world. It's possible you'll establish a stronger foundation, which will in turn bolster your courage and inspire you to break free of a limitation. What do you think?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): On the average, a total eclipse of the sun happens every 18 months. And how often is a total solar eclipse visible from a specific location on the planet? Typically, once every 375 years. In 2019, the magic moment will occur on July 2 for people living in Chile and Argentina. But I believe that throughout the coming year, Tauruses all over the world will experience other kinds of rare and wonderful events at a higher rate than usual. Not eclipses but rather divine interventions, mysterious miracles, catalytic epiphanies, unexpected breakthroughs and amazing graces. Expect more of the marvelous than you're accustomed to. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): "The world's full of people who have stopped listening to themselves," wrote mythologist Joseph Campbell. It's imperative that you not be one of those folks. 2019 should be the Year of Listening Deeply to Yourself. That means being on high alert for your inner inklings, your unconscious longings and the still, small voice at the heart of your destiny. If you do that, you'll discover I'm right when I say that you're smarter than you realize. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Jackson Pollock is

regarded as a pioneer in the technique of drip painting, which involves drizzling and splashing paint on canvases that lie on the floor. It made him famous. But the truth is, Pollock got inspired to pursue what became known as his signature style only after he saw an exhibit by the artist Janet Sobel, who was the real pioneer. I bring this to your attention, because I see 2019 as a year when the Janet Sobel-like aspects of your life will get their due. Overdue appreciation will arrive. Credit you have deserved but haven't fully garnered will finally come your way. You'll be acknowledged and recognized in surprising ways.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): As the crow flies, Wyoming is

almost a thousand miles from the Pacific Ocean and more than a thousand miles from the Gulf of Mexico, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. Now here's a surprise: In the northwest corner of Wyoming, the North Two Ocean Creek divides into two tributaries, one of which ultimately flows to the Pacific and one that reaches the Gulf. So an enterprising fish could conceivably swim from one ocean to the other via this waterway. I propose that we make North Two Ocean Creek your official metaphor for 2019. It will symbolize the turning point you'll be at in your life; it will remind you that you'll have the power to launch an epic journey in one of two directions.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I have come to the

conclusion that softening your relationship with perfectionism will be a key assignment in 2019. With this in mind, I offer you observations from wise people who have studied the subject. 1. "The perfect is the enemy of the good." —Voltaire 2. "Perfection is a stick with which to beat the possible." —Rebecca Solnit 3. Perfectionism is "the high-end version of fear." —Elizabeth Gilbert 4. "Nothing is less efficient than perfectionism." —Elizabeth Gilbert 4. "It's better to live your own life imperfectly than to imitate someone else's perfectly." —Elizabeth Gilbert

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In 1682, Peter Alexeyevich became co-tsar of Russia. He was 10 years old. His 24-year-old half-sister Sophia had a hole cut in the back of his side of the dual throne. That way she could sit behind him, out of sight, and whisper guidance as he discussed political matters with allies. I'd love it if you could wangle a comparable arrangement for yourself in 2019. Are there wise confidants or mentors or helpers from whom you could draw continuous counsel? Seek them out. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The body of the violin

By ROB BREZSNY week of December 26

has two f-shaped holes on either side of the strings. They enable the sound that resonates inside the instrument to be projected outwardly. A thousand years ago, the earliest ancestor of the modern violin had round holes. Later they became half-moons, then c-shaped, and finally evolved into the f-shape. Why the change? Scientific analysis reveals that the modern form allows more air to be pushed out from inside the instrument, thereby producing a more powerful sound. My analysis of your life in 2019 suggests it will be a time to make an upgrade from your metaphorical equivalent of the c-shaped holes to the f-shaped holes. A small shift like that will enable you to generate more power and resonance.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sagittarian singer-

songwriter Sia has achieved great success, garnering nine Grammy nominations and amassing a $20 million fortune. Among the superstars for whom she has composed hit tunes are Beyoncé, Rihanna and Flo Rida. But she has also had failures. Top recording artists like Adele and Shakira have commissioned her to write songs for them only to subsequently turn down what she created. In 2016, Sia got sweet revenge. She released an album in which she herself sang many of those rejected songs. It has sold more than two million copies. Do you, too, know what it's like to have your gifts and skills ignored or unused or rebuffed, Sagittarius? If so, the coming months will be an excellent time to express them for your own benefit, as Sia did.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): A typical fluffy

white cumulus cloud weighs 216,000 pounds. A dark cumulonimbus storm cloud is 106 million pounds, almost 490 times heavier. Why? Because it's filled with far more water than the white cloud. So which is better, the fluffy cumulus or the stormy cumulonimbus? Neither, of course. We might sometimes prefer the former over the latter because it doesn't darken the sky as much or cause the inconvenience of rain. But the truth is, the cumulonimbus is a blessing; a substantial source of moisture; a gift to growing things. I mention this because I suspect that for you, 2019 will have more metaphorical resemblances to the cumulonimbus than the cumulus.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): A hundred years ago,

most astronomers thought there was just one galaxy in the universe: our Milky Way. Other models for the structure of the universe were virtually heretical. But in the 1920s, astronomer Edwin Hubble produced research that proved the existence of many more galaxies. Today the estimate is that there are at least 400 billion. I wonder what currently unimaginable possibilities will be obvious to our ancestors a hundred years from now. Likewise, I wonder what currently unforeseen truths will be fully available to you by the end of 2019. My guess: more than in any other previous year of your life.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Author Elizabeth Gilbert offers advice for those who long for a closer relationship with the Supreme Being: "Look for God like a man with his head on fire looks for water." I'll expand that approach so it applies to you when you're in quest of any crucial life-enhancing experience. If you genuinely believe that a particular adventure or relationship or transformation is key to your central purpose, it's not enough to be mildly enthusiastic about it. You really do need to seek your heart's desire in the way people with their heads on fire look for water, and 2019 will be prime time for you to embody this understanding.
