Traffic and parking problems at three local grade schools during student dropoff and pickup times have persisted this school year, increasing safety risks, Hollister School District staff warned last week. Underdeveloped roads surrounding Gabilan Hills/Hollister Dual Language Academy, Calaveras/Accelerated Achievement Academy and R.O. Hardin/Hollister Prep School “do not provide safe routes for pedestrians and adequate on-street parking,” according to a Nov. 27 staff report presented to the HSD Board of Education. The number of cars, along with enrollment swollen by two school programs at each campus, prompted the school board in September to ask district staff to conduct a traffic safety assessment at the three schools. “As long as you have schools, there will be traffic issues twice a day, so we have to accept that,” said Trustee Robert Bernosky, who added that he experienced the congestion when his own three children attended local public schools.

Downtown lights up

The 28th annual Lights On Celebration in Hollister kicked off the holiday season with a huge crowd, plenty of lights and festive cheer. Nearly 10,000 people took a pause from holiday shopping on Nov. 24 to join the community in ushering in its annual holiday celebration.

The parade and party sponsored by the Hollister Downtown Association included food vendors, a car show, tree decorating, live entertainment and an evening parade with Santa. Nearly 80 lighted entries participated in the lighted, themed spectacle, “Through the Eyes of a Child.”

Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital has expanded its diabetes services with the new Barragan Family Health Care and Diabetes Center. The center was funded by a donation by Mary Ann Barragan and a grant from Monterey Peninsula Foundation, and is the first and only of its kind in San Benito County. The Diabetes Center, located at 930 Sunnyslope Road, Ste. A2, offers

a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to the care of diabetes under direction of a team led by endocrinologist Michael Koteles, MD, with Dr. Aileen Wang. The center was made possible by a donation from Barragan, a longtime resident of Hollister, in honor of her late husband Ray Barragan, who suffered from diabetes for many years. Current data indicates that 17.5 percent of the adult population in San Benito County has diabetes, and an estimated 30 percent of the adult population is considered pre-diabetic or at risk of becoming diabetic, according to the hospital.
