EDITOR’S NOTE We always hear about how politicians want nothing more than to be loved, but apparently in Santa Cruz we’re loving them right out of office.

It’s a big loss for our community that Cynthia Chase, who showed so much initiative and leadership in her term as mayor last year, won’t be running for re-election to the Santa Cruz City Council. Ironically, it seems like the careful attention she’s given to some of the biggest issues facing our city contributed to her decision not to run—sadly, our local government doesn’t seem to be designed for people who want to give

HARD NUMBERS Re: “Getting Inpatient” (GT, 6/13): This article is great and focuses much-needed attention on the county’s use of $80 million per year to meet, or not meet, the rapidly growing mental health and addiction crisis on our streets and in our neighborhoods. To put it in perspective, the county’s $80 million per year budget for behavioral health (addictions and mental health) is 150 percent more than the combined budgets of all four police departments in the county. We have the right to ask if we’re getting the services we need. How much of those funds go to county, department and nonprofit overhead and administration?

Instead, he delivered this week’s cover story, which uses Chase’s decision as a jumping off point to talk about the bigger problem of a government system that rewards hard work and policy successes with burnout, and how that can put the city council out of reach for some people whose representation we really need. This wasn’t the easy way to do this story; it was the right way.

However, the article neglects to mention that the petition’s initial claim of $15 million of “unspent funds” came from the county’s own report to the state. The number was reduced to $11 million of “unspent funds” when the county submitted an updated report over two years late. The petition language was only changed to give the benefit of a doubt to the county’s as yet unproven claim that there are no unspent funds. The county is still one of only five counties (out of 58) that have not yet submitted the late reports that will prove them right or wrong. We’ll see.

Local activists have joined with the city of Santa Cruz to launch the Keep it Cool campaign, aimed at reducing energy waste.

The effort is simple: it urges businesses to keep their doors and windows closed while they have the air conditioning or heat running. In the campaign, the city has partnered with the Santa Cruz Climate Action Network and Generation 180, a national nonprofit with the mission of creating a cultural shift in energy awareness and clean energy adoption.

Guy Kawasaki showed Watsonville’s Digital Nest some love on Sunday when he sent two tweets to his 1.5 million followers about the nonprofit that gives young people tech training. The first was a Santa Cruz Sentinel article profiling founding member Martin Vargas-Vega, and the second was a video, to which Kawasaki added, “How about helping Digital Nest?” We already knew the group was awesome, and don’t need outside validation on its behalf. But, still, Guy Kawasaki! He’s tech famous!

BAIT AND SWITCH Re: “Tie Game”: The Greenway story doesn’t add up. The effort to sway people toward the “concept of a trail only in maybe 10-15 years” instead of the trail being built right now is actually to completely stop anything from happening ever. Think about it. A privately funded group financed by one or two extremely rich people show up at the eleventh hour and say “Stop! We have an idea. Let’s start all over” and then they set about pitching their idea to various groups, while spreading around some cash donations on the back channel, and actually begin to gain momentum because the pitch is that good. Before you know it, some organizations have signed on to the >8

We have seen this kind of bait-andswitch deception used to sway voters very recently. Greenway has succeeded in convincing some people to get into their wagon. But ask yourself why would a wellfunded private group form for the purpose of killing the current trail with rail project when the first segment is scheduled to

And since they have no public oversight, Greenway can say whatever they want to convince people to join in their folly while the employees and people who have been working for us to get our trail built must be accountable for not only their actions, but also their words.

or many Americans, problems with sleep are unfortunately the norm. A recent Consumer Reports survey showed that 27 percent of U.S. adults had trouble falling or staying asleep most nights, and 68 percent had sleep problems at least once a week. And according to the CDC, more than one-third of Americans don’t get enough sleep— and this lack of z’s increases the risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and mental distress.

Many people also struggle with anxiety and stress, which can also be related to suboptimal sleep. These issues not only overlap, but they are so ubiquitous that they might as well

be considered part of the human condition. Even more troubling is that, due to the difficulty of treating these symptoms of unease, many people often turn to alcohol, drugs, or medications as remedies, all of which are potentially addictive and carry with them harmful side effects. But what if a cure to these issues was as simple as replacing the blanket on your bed? Perhaps it’s worth a try.

Proponents and manufacturers claim that they can help with sleep problems, restlessness, anxiety, and stress, and typically recommend a blanket that is about 10-15 percent of a person’s body weight. The prevalence

of sleep issues combined with the desire by many to find more natural and non-medication solutions makes it easy to see why weighted blankets are so trendy right now. According to Pinterest, weighted blankets are one of the top trends in 2018, with saves for the item up 259 percent over last year.

The theory is that they produce a calming effect due to a concept known as “deep pressure stimulation” (DPS), which is defined as firm but gentle squeezing, hugs, or holding that relaxes the nervous system. The feeling is similar to the warm and fuzzy mood produced by snuggling with a loved one or waking on a cold morning wrapped in a sea of blankets … it just feels good. DPS, also known as

“grounding” or “earthing,” is thought to produce its soothing effects because it activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This may not only lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, but also increase the levels of feel-good hormones like oxytocin and endorphins and feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. The end result is a peaceful and calming effect on the mind and body.

Traditionally, weighted blankets have been used to treat children with sleep, anxiety, stress and sensory disorders often related to autism—but according to a 2015 study published in the Journal of Sleep Medicine and Disorders, they are showing promise treating adults in the general population experiencing the same issues. The study found that using a weighted blanket led to longer sleep bouts and fewer movements during sleep in participants. The authors concluded: “Overall, we found that when the participants used the weighted blanket, they had a calmer night’s sleep. A weighted blanket may aid in reducing insomnia through altered tactile inputs, thus may provide an innovative, nonpharmacological approach and complementary tool to improve sleep quality.”

Additionally, a study published in Occupational Therapy in Mental Health, found that weighted blanket use was not only safe, as evidenced by vital sign metrics, but also that 63 percent of the participants using the weighted blanket reported lower anxiety after use, and 78 percent preferred the weighted blanket as a calming modality. Another study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that grounding participants for eight weeks led to lower cortisol levels during night-time sleep, and the subjective report of lowered pain, stress and sleep dysfunction in nearly all participants.

Whether or not a weighted blanket is right for you or your child is up to you—and perhaps worth a try.

One downside is that they often cost upwards of $200. Worth it? Maybe.

Some have also reported that they can be too hot, are not very portable, and that they can be too heavy for children to use and feel comfortable with.

To see the night sky as our ancestors did for millions of years, photographers and stargazers make the 45-minute drive up the coast to Pigeon Point lighthouse, where Jeff Parry has dimmed the lights.

Parry, a member of the Santa Cruz chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), has lived at Pigeon Point, where he manages a hostel, for 21 years.

The irony that a lighthouse has become a dark sky destination does not escape him.

“You’ve got to know that there’s a little bit too much light pollution if the lighthouse keeper is like, ‘hey, let’s think about how we use our light,’” he tells me on my recent overnight stay.

The idea to go dark—aside from the lighthouse’s flashes of light every 10 seconds—occurred to him three years ago, when he invited the Santa Cruz Astronomy Club up to the annual Sleep for Peace event that marks the birthday of the United Nations the week of Sept. 25. For years, Parry says they put a note on everyone’s pillow that said “Sleep for peace. Please talk to someone about peace.”

The event evolved when Parry learned there was a movement within the U.N. called Star Peace Project, where nations would throw star parties on border towns with other countries that they were traditionally hostile toward. “They would have these parties, and then they were going to look at this deep-sky object together,” Parry says. “The whole purpose was to show that in reality, there are no borders. It’s a boundless universe. And I just thought that was a revolutionary notion.”

Parry, who is also a photographer, says digital cameras, along with sharing on Instagram and Flickr, have made Pigeon Point a popular destination. On new moon nights in the summer when there isn’t cloud coverage, like the one I got to experience on my visit, there are several photographers setting up to capture the Milky Way and do star-trail-producing timelapse photography of the night sky.

hese days, American democracy is less of a shiny new sports car and more of a beater sedan, missing a wheel or two and dragging itself along in a screeching shower of sparks. To work, democracy requires regular maintenance, continual check-ins and upkeep, or it’ll stall right in the middle of the street.

Some would argue that it already has.

Democracy also requires dialogue between different political factions.

But according to a 2016 study by Pew Research Center, not only is political animosity in America steadily increasing, but feelings of frustration, fear and anxiety toward the opposing party are also at a 25-year high. Around half of those surveyed indicated that they were “afraid” of the other party, and unsurprisingly, are more likely to surround themselves with those who share their beliefs and values.

Needless to say, this doesn’t make for much of a bipartisan discourse.

With the future of democracy in mind, last year the Boots Road Group held an “Is There Hope for Democracy?” panel in Monterey.

Apparently, there is hope, since the previously sold-out event is back for a second year—this time with the name “Saving Democracy: National and Statewide Perspectives from Left and Right” along with a new location and several new panelists.

Congressman Sam Farr; attorney and special assistant to Barack Obama, Adrienne Harris; and Second District Santa Cruz County Supervisor Zach Friend. It was moderated by Managing Partner of Boots Road Group Spencer Critchley.

Farr, Friend and Critchley return this year for a second round in Aptos, and opted to include opposing viewpoints this time. The goal of the event is to come up with solutions and bring varying experiences, backgrounds and opinions to the majority-liberal audience in Santa Cruz.

“We said that this year we are going to have the entire political spectrum present when having a broad discussion about democracy,” Friend says of organizing this year’s event. “There is something much larger than partisanship driving who we are as a nation and system today, and [although] we may never vote the same way on those issues, I believe that there are common unifying ideals above it all.”

Kristin Olsen, formerly both the California Assembly Republican leader and vice-chair of the California Republican Party, and leading Republican political strategist Dan Schnur (who is now a No Party Preference voter), will both be present.

“It’s long past time that we move past hyper-partisanship, and get real work done for people,” Stanislaus County Supervisor Olsen says.

“Most people are just exhausted by extreme partisanship, myself included, and cliché representation.

We have to be able to find ways to work together.”

Olsen, a Modesto native, says that many of her constituents feel that they aren’t represented in California politics, and feel isolated from the otherwise dominant blue coast. Though the election of Donald Trump is a marked victory for the inland valley, it doesn’t change local and state representation.

“Throughout inland California, people feel like their voices aren’t heard,” she says. “They feel left behind.”

Mesloh was President Obama’s deputy assistant U.S. trade representative for public affairs, and the transition co-chair for Senator Kamala Harris. Mesloh says that there are many common values that unite parties; concerns about retirement and higher education, for example, extend beyond party borders and aren’t unique to any group in particular.

“There is a crisis of confidence in our democratic systems right now,” Mesloh says. “As people look to the changing nature of journalism and social media, the faith and trust with how they get information or how they make a judgement on which they are going to vote on is changing.”

She adds that many of her friends and family don’t know what or who to trust in the media, believing that outlets like CNN and the New York Times are sometimes not accurate or reliable. If voters can’t trust the media, she says, then there is little hope for voters to stay informed. But Mesloh says the responsibility also falls on politicians to engage their audiences.

“The system of government really needs to modernize and innovate,” she says. “A lot of people really just find it irrelevant to their lives, and that's a scary thing. We have a lot to do in leadership to translate and make it relevant for people.”

Since President Trump’s election, there have been record numbers of protests, demonstrations and marches, yet local primary voter turnout is still less than 50 percent.

Though this year’s numbers won’t be finalized until July 5, around

43 percent of eligible Santa Cruz County voters voted in the June gubernatorial primary—a big jump from 34.8 percent in June 2014, considered the worst voter turnout year ever in California. Still, considering the staggering amount of political involvement, activism and comparatively diverse spectrum of candidates, former Congressman Sam Farr says he expected more.

“I’m appalled when you have any numbers that are less than 70 percent of the people voting,” Farr says. “Evil prevails when enough good people do nothing, and voting is so essential to our culture that we ought to condemn people who aren’t voting.”

Farr blames the media and politicians for a lack of promotion and education around political processes. He also says the virtually nonexistent civic education in schools is hindering young people from understanding the importance of voting.

“In my experiences teaching college classes, students didn’t know the difference between a city council and a congress,” Farr says. “More appalling, they didn’t think they needed to.”

According to Pew Research Center, as of November 2016, an estimated 62 million millennials (age 20 to 35) were voting-age U.S. citizens. Young people represent the largest group of democraticidentifying or leaning voters.

Although the total number of eligible young people is encroaching on the 70 million Baby Boomers (age 52 to 70), millennials continue to have the lowest voter turnout of any age group.

Parry notes that people tell him they sleep really well here, and he credits the low light environment that kicks in the body’s natural sleep response. Better sleep is one of the many benefits of reducing light pollution.

Dr. Carrie Partch, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UCSC who researches the genetic mechanisms of circadian rhythms, is discovering that our recent shift toward bringing the day into the night through artificial light is affecting biology at the cellular and molecular levels,

which she says can result in metabolic diseases, cancer, and reproductive issues for all life forms.

Parry notices fewer people staying up all night compared to when he had the cool bright light throughout the hostel. “I didn’t know. I thought I wanted to have the brightest light possible to be the safest light, but really, your eyes adjust if you give it a bit of a chance,” he says.

IDA offers guidelines on creating a darksky environment, and there is an official designation for dark-sky parks that has not yet been awarded to Pigeon Point Lighthouse. An important step Parry has taken toward that end, though, is to shield the outdoor lights so they are directed at the ground rather than shining into the sky or the ocean. Parry also replaced cool

bright lights with less damaging warmer hues of yellow and red, which light pollution activists note is a design challenge since city planners typically find cool light more attractive.

One of the draws to Pigeon Point is the private hot tub overlooking the ocean that is only available to hostel guests in halfhour intervals. Parry has included signage by the hot tub to encourage people to turn off the lights, a suggestion that may not occur to guests, but greatly improves the experience.

The signage runs throughout the hostel as well, and Parry has noticed that where there is more aggressive signage, visitors are more likely to turn off lights when not in use, or at least close the curtains to prevent the light from seeping out the

Lisa Heschong, an IDA member who organized the “UCSC Original Thinkers: Earth Night” event in April that brought together speakers like Partch and the SKYGLOW timelapse photographer Harun Mehmedinovic, wonders when awareness about the benefits of protecting the night sky is going to hit. “The biology is beginning to accumulate,” she says. “The question is how do we translate that into public policy?”

Heschong was instrumental in helping develop the State Energy Code in 2006. It specifies different lighting zones for lowlight natural areas to high levels of light for urban entertainment districts. How aggressively the city follows the codes is up to the political will of Santa Cruz residents, though.

She says we can look down the coast to Malibu, which recently passed a darksky ordinance, as an example. Pepperdine University in Malibu is working on campus dark-sky design guidelines as well.

According to Steven H.D. Haddock of Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Center, 76 percent of ocean marine organisms observed offshore of California are capable of bioluminescence, so artificial light is a direct threat to them. Squid boats, which can be seen this time of year off the coast, provide a particular danger to marine life confused by the bright light.

As Santa Cruz moves toward a more walk-and-bike-friendly infrastructure, Heschong says we will have to reconsider lighting. While the new technology of LED lighting provides more control and saves energy, the cool, bright light it puts off increases light pollution—and the impacts, while subtle, are far-reaching. Heschong compares the symptoms to jet lag or seasonal affective disorder.

The problem, Heschong says, is that humans love light. “It’s bright and shiny.

We are inherently attracted to light as daytime creatures. We think it makes us happy, but we forget to notice it’s making us unhealthy,” she says. “It has profound widespread biological impacts, but it’s very easy to fix. Just turn off the lights.”

voting actions so low—so high in political interest and so low in actually doing something about it,” Farr says.

Though Santa Cruz is staunchly liberal now, it wasn’t always so. The Golden State began to turn blue in the 1970s, in part because of young people voting. For years, California backed Republicans, delivering electoral votes to Nixon, Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Santa Cruz, too, has a history of bipartisan fluctuation.

“Prior to the university being there, Santa Cruz was one of the most redneck cities in California,” Farr remembers. “As goes Santa Cruz, so goes the state. I think the reason that Santa Cruz changed so much is because society was changing and was willing to adopt more progressive principles … The reason the Republicans lost the majority in California is because they wouldn’t embrace new ideas.”

Republican Donald L. Grunsky represented Watsonville in the state legislature, and eventually served as Senate Republican leader in 1967.

Santa Cruz local Frank Murphy Jr. also represented the Californian Republican agenda in the House of Representatives until 1977. Santa Cruz was a sleepy resort town with an abundance of senior citizens, who at the time tended vote conservative.

The population was less than half of what it is now, and UCSC brought an influx of young liberal voters that would help to turn Santa Cruz politics upside down.

“When people came to me in disbelief that Trump was elected, and said the world is coming to an end, I said, ‘No, the world is your backyard and it’s not coming to an end in Santa Cruz and Monterey and the Central Coast of California,’” Farr says. “Local and state government has the tools to solve their problems, with the exception of immigration and marijuana, which require some federal input. So get involved in your community.”

Dennis Tamura and Lori Perry know a thing or two about loving plants and staying local.

“Farming is, by definition, local,” Perry says. Tamura and Perry own Blue Heron Farms in Corralitos, where the soft, sandy soil and cool climate makes for ideal farming conditions for many crops. The farm ships out hundreds of pounds of organic, well-groomed produce and beautiful flowers every week.

Together, Tamura and Perry have been feeding and beautifying their community for more than 30 years.

“Santa Cruz County has one of the best climates in the world for growing plants,” Perry says.

“The larger Bay Area is also full of people who love good food, organic farms, farmers markets and great restaurants. We have found that by focusing incessantly on the quality of what we bring to market our following grows.”

After years of studying at UC Santa Cruz with master gardener Alan Chadwick, a founding father of organic farming, Tamura opened Blue Heron Farms in 1985. Blue Heron Farms offers many varieties of organic vegetables including salad greens, Asian greens, herbs, and several varieties of stunning flowers—this year’s dahlias are a true sight to behold. The farm spans 20 acres, employs 26 staff in season, and serves seven local farmers markets.

With the help of other local businesses, Tamura was able turn what he learned from Chadwick into a long-standing livelihood. But running a farm isn’t easy physically or financially. When Tamura decided to start his own farm, he looked for land locally first.

“Dennis has lived in Santa Cruz County since his student days at UCSC, and the Santa Cruz

Chase’s decision not to run again, and her reasons for making it, open up questions about the future of Santa Cruz elections, the entire set-up of the city’s government, the future of Santa Cruz housing policy (see page 14) and even the tenor of local politics.

Generally, when anyone hears a politician talking about seeking more input or forming a subcommittee, it sounds like little more than a polite way to avoid making any tough decisions. But what Chase showed Santa Cruz over the past few years is that an intensive study process really can be a method of building consensus down a path of action that will have a wide swath of community buy-in. Two years ago, Chase served on a council committee on homelessness that came up with 21 short- and long-term recommendations, some of which are now being implemented.

Her housing suggestions spawned a subcommittee of their own—a committee that Chase also served on—leading to a community discussion last month, and ultimately the adoption a few weeks ago of the housing blueprint subcommittee’s recommendations.

“What we had heard over and over and over [from the public] was, ‘You’re not asking, you’re not listening to us,’” says Chase, who says she would be open to one day running again for elected office, possibly the Santa Cruz

County Board of Supervisors. “It felt like we really needed to do that, and we really needed to vet our recommendations with them because what I was trying to say was, ‘OK we heard from you, we looked at those things, we came back with some preliminary recommendations. Before we move forward with these, we want to check them out with you.’”

TAKE MY SEAT Chase isn’t the first city councilmember to bow out in recent years after serving only one term, due partly to the heavy workload of a tough gig that’s supposed to be only part-time.

She’s actually the third councilmember to do so in the last four years—all of them women juggling a number of other responsibilities.

Like Chase, then-Councilmember Hilary Bryant left office in 2014, while enormously popular, after a challenging year as mayor. Two years later, Pamela Comstock announced she wouldn’t be running for re-election, either. (Micah Posner also decided not to run again that same year, although he cited disillusionment with city politics, at the time, rather than unreasonably high time expectations.)

“The decision was made out of necessity. I couldn’t continue to fulfill my commitments to my family, my community and my employer,” Comstock says.

“Something had to give.”

If Chase’s self-proclaimed “year of housing” were a long and grinding sports season, her “listening tour”—stretching from July through November—was the grueling playoff run. Conducted during her one-year term as mayor, the tour culminated in about 100 affordable housingrelated recommendations at a Dec. 5 meeting, after a hellish flu had gotten the best of her. The way she battled through that night was an MVP-like performance, the Michael Jordan flu game of city government. By the end, her voice had gone from hoarse to practically nonexistent. Chase never considered skipping it, but she was out sick for the following week.

“People would ask, ‘Is everything OK … ?’ Like, ‘No! Everything’s not OK! My body can’t do all of this,’” remembers Chase, who also works full-time as the inmate programs manager at the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. “Once I commit to something, I’m gonna follow it through, and I’m gonna do it to the best of my ability.”

Chase says she had never been as sick as she was last year during her term as mayor. Looking back now, she’s grateful it’s behind her.

She loved hearing the perspectives of thousands of community members, and then packaging them into cogent policy solutions, she says. Nonetheless, Chase broke the

GIVING UP THE CHASE <23 When Comstock would get home at night, she says that if she wanted to help her son with homework, make dinner and put him to bed at 9 p.m., she knew she would have 100 emails waiting for her. Most of the senders would be expecting thoughtful replies, so she would be up until 1 or 2 a.m., knowing that she would be up again at 6:45 a.m.

Whenever she didn’t reply, she felt like a failure.

Comstock adds, however, that she doesn’t necessarily see a problem with this trend of respected councilmembers serving only one term. She says it brings more voices to city government.

Although Santa Cruz city councilmembers got a pay increase two years ago, they still make about $20,500, with the rotating mayorship—a one-year term— paying roughly twice that. If a city councilmember ends up working 40 hours a week, which Chase says isn’t uncommon, that comes out to less than minimum wage. Chase says the workload varies based on how much a councilmember takes on, but she thinks it’s going to become rarer for people working their own full-time jobs to serve on the council.

“Who’s going to represent the community?” says Chase. “I think that is going to be more common, where people aren’t able to balance this with their lives, unless they’re retired or independently wealthy. You can have a couple people on your council, but you certainly don’t want the majority of your council being that.”

For a councilmember, just staying on top of emails and scheduling is a job in itself, Chase says. Then there is meeting with constituents and going to events, and, of course, the meetings—ones for the City Council (which can go on for more than 10 hours), separate commissions (Chase has served on both the RTC and the METRO boards), and various subcommittees. Many of those meetings come with 300 or 400 pages of dense reading material.

It’s worth noting that Santa Cruz city councilmembers do, however, get paid more than other councilmembers in the county.

Although the county supervisors make more than $120,000 each, councilmembers from Scotts Valley, Capitola and Watsonville all make less than $7,000 a year.

Capitola Mayor Mike Termini, who’ll be sad to see Chase go, says that a Capitola city councilmember typically works about 20 hours a week and that the mayor works an additional 15 hours or so.

Even though Capitola’s councilmembers make less than a third of what representatives in Santa Cruz make, Termini doesn’t envy his North County counterparts, who serve in a city that has six times the population and doubles as the county seat.

Although he loves his gig, he agrees with Chase that this may be the right time for a discussion on what county residents expect of their local electeds.

“If you ask the average person,” he says, “they really think we’re making the big bucks.”

FACING FORWARD If the thankless task of serving on the council is the dumpster fire it’s often made out to be, then it begs the question: Why would so many candidates—nine so far, in the current race—want it? Or is there something else about the allure that somehow pulls in candidates like moths drawn to the flame?

Robert Singleton, 27, who’s strongly considering a run for the council, says that, plain and simple, this isn’t a decision that anyone makes out of self-interest.

“It’s public service,” says Singleton, who ran two years ago and also co-founded Civinomics, a discussion forum and polling group. “It’s not a good move for your career, because it’s not going to pay anything close to what you would make in in the private sector. It certainly doesn’t pay in the way that is commensurate with your experience or the time you put in. But it’s a way to have an impact on your community.”

The other eight candidates come from a variety of different backgrounds: Richelle Noroyan, 49, is running for her second consecutive term on the Santa Cruz City Council, and

also works part-time in community relations at UCSC. A moderate on the council, she pushed for more rigorous Cowell Beach cleanups and served on the Homelessness Coordinating Committee, alongside Chase and Comstock. She also proposed two local gun laws that the council passed unanimously.

Drew Glover, 32, ran for City Council two years ago, finishing the race for four seats in fifth place, after he learned his mother was dying and chose to spend some of the final weeks of his campaign by her side. He believes that if he goes through the city budget, he’ll find ways to better prioritize community programs.

Donna Meyers, 53, has her own environmental company, Conservation Collaborative, that works on a variety of watershed and coastal habitat projects. She chairs both the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission and the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, which has eliminated its deficit, expanded its budget and grown its staff in recent years.

Cynthia Hawthorne, 67, is a retired psychotherapist who helped organize the last two women’s marches in downtown Santa Cruz.

The mother of two and former school board trustee says her experience as a great listener can bring civility and respectful dialogue back to local politics.

Michael R. Mahan, 29, is a Santa Cruz County assistant district attorney, who works on domestic violence cases. He touts his conflict resolution background and wants to help the police to prioritize cracking down on serious crimes, as opposed to petty offenses.

Paige Concannon, 56, is a former cook for Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall, who’s been volunteering at the St. Francis Soup Kitchen for 10 years. Concannon—who notes that her neighbors already call her “Mayor of Seabright”—says her neighborhood’s being overrun by theft and littered needles.

Dave Lane, 55, is a retired UCSC auditor who believes he can introduce a new level of austerity to the city budget. He wants to cut back the police budget and reverse course

on any goals for low-income highdensity housing.

Justin Cummings, 35, is a UCSC climate change researcher who teaches kids about environmental stewardship at Long Marine Lab. He felt motivated to run after seeing so many of his friends either get priced out or end up among the working homeless population.

Former Councilmember Comstock is surprised to hear that so many candidates have already jumped in, and says that it’s important for them to be aware of what they’re getting into. But she also explains that the magnitude of the undertaking is only part of the equation.

“Fear of time commitment does not dissuade people from serving, because it is such an honor,” Comstock says.

GROWTH OPPORTUNITY Soon, Chase will be taking on a new kind of leadership role.

Chase says she and her husband Howard Heevner have started taking classes to become foster parents, and she hopes to start taking in kids by next year. Chase says they’re most interested in the hard-to-place kids—sibling groups, older kids and LGBT youth.

“It is one of those things where we vacillate between ‘Oh, this is so amazing, we’re going to have these lovely little creatures in our lives,’ and then we’re also ‘Oh God, are we ready for this?’ and all of the potential challenges that come with kids in that circumstance,” she says.

Four years ago, Chase was thinking about running for Santa Cruz City Council, and found herself sitting in the same place she’s been for the past few weeks—adding up all of the hours of work and trying to figure out how much she could realistically accomplish each week.

Chase got a lot of encouragement from women’s advocacy groups to jump in, but she was already the director of Gemma, a Watsonvillebased nonprofit that helps convicts transition back into society. When the program got moved under the umbrella of Encompass Community

GIVING UP THE CHASE City Council districts so that each region of the city gets its own elected representative. Some Midtown and Seabright residents, including Concannon, support the district approach, having long felt that they’ve been underrepresented on the council.

Here in Santa Cruz, Comstock feels that switching to four council districts—along with a directly elected mayor—may reduce the workload for each representative, as they would have fewer constituents to answer to.

Implementing the change would involve at least a small handful of practical considerations.

For instance, would UCSC dominate its own district, or get split into two? And what are the ramifications if a skilled up-andcoming public servant lives in the same district as a popular incumbent? Or what if two wellliked councilmembers are already W: 2” x H: 6.5” living in the sameTrim:district?

Perhaps the biggest question about the approach relates to what happens when a needed but unpopular project like a homeless shelter or affordable housing development comes through the city pipeline.

Chase worries that if the city opted to set up council districts, it would simply allow “Not in My Backyard”—or NIMBY—activists to stonewall the effort.

“I have seen other communities where districts end up being a way to push responsibility out of someone’s district and into somebody else’s, and then for something to not get done,” Chase says. “Two things that are really important to me are affordable housing and homelessness. Both of those issues are NIMBY issues, and I worry considerably about what would happen if we had districts and we had all district representatives saying ‘not here.’ Then where?’ Those are the conversations we need to have.”

Services, it freed up enough time for her to jump into the council race.

A couple of years later, when a position at the sheriff’s office opened up, her responsibilities intensified again, forcing her to re-do the whole calculus four years later. She also asked herself if she was letting down young girls by not entering the race.

“And then I really thought about it, and I think that part of being a good leader—in general, but particularly as a woman—is knowing that there’s other ways to serve, and that I did serve for four years to the best of my abilities. And that part of being a good leader is knowing when to step out,” says Chase.

Over the past couple years, she says that “personality conflicts and theatrics” have at times gotten in the way of good governance and community representation, although she declines to identify any councilmembers specifically.

Going forward, possible changes have appeared on the horizon that could alter the shape of future elections, possibly even city governance itself.

Mayor David Terrazas floated the idea of a ballot measure to test the waters of public opinion on the idea of newly established city council districts, a publicly elected mayor, and letting a mayor serve a two-year term. Terrazas isn’t the first Santa Cruz mayor to suggest that a one-year term is too brief to implement any sense of vision and see it through. (As Ryan Coonerty finished up his second term as mayor in 2011, he identified the same problem, and offered pretty much the same solution.)

Chase says the idea of a directly elected mayor is an interesting one that’s worthy of a discussion.

If the city increased the pay of the mayor and made the position fulltime, that could, in theory, reduce the workload for his or her fellow councilmembers. But that would come at a financial cost, so Chase believes the city may want to look at reducing the number of city councilmembers to offset them.

s it really a joke if no one’s laughing? One would think a professional comedian, especially one who is often mentioned in the same sentence as Lucille Ball and Mary Tyler Moore, would have a ready answer to such a question. But one night

last month, Roseanne Barr’s comic instincts—honed over three decades at the top of her field—failed her spectacularly. For reasons that still mystify her fans and her critics alike, Barr tweeted a “joke” that compared a prominent AfricanAmerican woman to an ape.

By the next morning, she had apologized, but the news cycle was already madly churning. An hour and a half after Barr’s apology, African-American comedian Wanda Sykes, who was a consulting producer on ABC’s successful Roseanne reboot, announced she

was quitting. Soon after that, Roseanne co-star Sara Gilbert condemned Barr’s joke. By midafternoon, barely 11 hours after the original tweet, ABC announced it was cancelling the highest-rated and most-watched series on broadcast television this year.

Roseanne tweet, but after a similarly loud kerfuffle, comedian Michelle Wolf’s controversial set at the White House Correspondents Dinner. “I think it’s a great example of how we’re policing jokes now more than ever,” he says of the Wolf story, “because pretty much across the ideological spectrum, we’ve realized their power. We’re no longer willing to give joke-tellers these little carve-outs for being a wise truthteller, because everyone now has a platform for that on social media.”

PEAK COMEDY For the comedy fan, this brave new world has its delights. If tragedy is eternal, the nature of comedy is that it’s perishable. It has to change or die. And in recent decades, comedy has become more sophisticated and stimulating. Sitcoms from the 1960s or ’70s seem leaden and obvious compared with the pure speed and dexterity of such shows as 30 Rock or Community. Comedy has colored everything from literature to advertising to political stump speeches.

“We’ve all kind of internalized the voice of comedy,” says Jennings. “We understand this new snarky layer that overlays everything in our culture.

But we still are not all equipped with how jokes actually function. And now, it’s very important to be good at understanding the mechanics of jokes.”

That snarky voice has its roots in magazine culture, namely, Mad, National Lampoon and especially Spy in the 1980s. It took hold in counterculture stand-up and skit comedy from George Carlin to Saturday Night Live. But, as Jennings points out, the engine that turbo-charged snide comedy into the mainstream was Twitter. Comedy fans from the boomer and Gen-X generations can still remember the scarcity model of edgy stand-up and skit comedy—there were comedy albums, bits on The Tonight Show and a few other places on network TV, and the occasional, often inaccessible HBO special.

Cable, then the internet, destroyed that model—but Twitter turned it on its head, creating battalions of amateur quipsters of >30 varying quality. Suddenly,

Before nightfall, Barr’s talent agency had dropped her as a client, and by the next morning, the president of the United States had weighed in on the controversy, also on Twitter, bizarrely suggesting that he was somehow owed an apology. After Barr insinuated that Ambien might have had something to do with her joke, the makers of the sleep aid deadpanned that “racism is not a known side effect” of any of their drugs.

In the following days, other jokes turned into mini eruptions of passing controversy. Samantha Bee’s c-bomb at Ivanka Trump backfired.

Conan O’Brien caught heat for comments about Melania Trump.

All, including Bill Maher’s years-old and oft-repeated cracks comparing Donald Trump to an ape, were packaged—and avidly consumed—as breaking news.

Walter Cronkite and the Ghosts of Journalism Past would likely be bewildered at the Roseanne Barr grease fire, but none of it surprises Ken Jennings.

Jennings is the affable podcaster and author who first came to mainstream attention for his record-breaking run as a Jeopardy! contestant back in 2004. His new book, Planet Funny: How Comedy Took Over Our Culture, anticipates nearly every turn in the Roseanne saga, from the absurdity that a sitcom—once thought of as one of the most disposable and frivolous of cultural artifacts—has assumed such political importance, to social media’s power to amplify bad jokes that otherwise might not have survived outside the womb, to corporate America adopting snarky humor as a public-relations strategy.

Planet Funny makes a case that is more specific (and more ambivalent) than the decades-old complaint that “entertainment values” are ruining the news media. In the new book, Jennings illustrates not only how comedy has evolved from a straightforward mode of mass entertainment into a bewildering web of associations and references, but also how the voice of derisive outsider humor has become integral to a worldview that fuels toxic cynicism in public life.

comedy was crowd-sourced and flash-mobbed.

“There’s this engine now that generates jokes and joke-tellers, where you can see a hundred jokes a minute,” Jennings says. “As a kid, I’d watch sitcoms and there’d be three or four good jokes and I’d wonder, ‘How did they do that?’ It just seemed like a magic trick to me. Now, when you see hundreds and hundreds of jokes every day, you start to see the rules, the mechanisms. Here’s the new meme where you can put a different caption on it. It’s like training wheels for your mind.”

For comedy nerds, such a state sounds like nirvana. As amateur online comedy has metastasized on Twitter, Reddit and other sites, professional comedy has had to step up its game. Early on in Planet Funny, Jennings includes a hand-drawn map of dozens of connected comedy sources from Aristophanes and Moliere to Doonesbury and Colbert.

The comedy world today is a series of neighborhoods, many of them comforting and familiar, others bizarre and perplexing. Fans of New Yorker cartoons and Weird Al Yankovic may be utterly at sea with South Park or Judd Apatow, and vice versa.

“It’s just too big a world now,” Jennings says. “You cannot follow all the good comedy that’s out there. You can’t really follow all the great comedy that’s out there. There’s a kind of one-upmanship going on. The comic tone keeps getting more rarefied and specialized and stranger, to keep that insider appeal. But also because novelty is so important to a joke.”

But just as eating dessert all the time instead of nutritious meals can lead to diabetes, too much snide comedy can create a toxic culture. The Jennings book is an echo of another groundbreaking book from 1985 by social critic Neil Postman. Amusing Ourselves to Death was a jeremiad against the dumbing down of contemporary culture and an assertion that the dystopia threatening modern America was not Orwell’s 1984, but instead Huxley’s Brave New World, where citizens would willingly give up freedoms in exchange for pleasures

and distracting entertainment.

“He, of course, presciently wrote in the early ’80s, before the internet started to make his worst predictions come true,” Jennings, 44, says of Postman. “I’m more conflicted than he was. I love comedy. It’s a huge part of my identity, from the moment I was the class clown in school. I’m very reluctant to grapple with the idea that it might not be good for us.”

Planet Funny traces the development of what Jennings calls “the voice,” the specific tone that characterizes modern American satirical humor.

The voice may have had its pioneers— Chevy Chase on SNL’s Weekend Update, John Candy on Second City, Steve Martin in his “Wild and Crazy Guy” days. But its jump into the news business, says Jennings, may have come by way of Spy magazine, the inspirational forebear of both The Onion and The Daily Show.

“They were onto Trump before anyone else,” Jennings says of the snarky, gossipy magazine that published between 1986 and 1998.

“They wrote about Cosby and Schwarzenegger being awful when everyone else was giving them honorary degrees and awards for being great family men. They were very ahead of their time. They were like the Velvet Underground. They only lasted a few years, but every kid that read it figured out how to do ‘the voice.’”

Maybe the most controversial part of Planet Funny is Jennings’ assertion that this new satirical culture is largely responsible for the election of Donald Trump, who has thus far carried his pre-presidential “act” into the White House. What liberals hear as lies and outrages, he says, Trump supporters often hear as edgy satire.

“I really do think that’s what people were thinking coming out of those (Trump campaign) rallies: ‘Look at this guy. He’s such a straight shooter. He’s finally saying what we’re all thinking,’ which is kinda the same thing all those frat boys were saying coming out of Dane Cook shows. It’s not that different,” says Jennings. “Now the unspoken thing is just to be as overthe-top as you can. Make them roar in the aisles. That’s the path to power.”

Jahred and Shawna Namaste of Eternal Love talk about their time among the Hawaiian volcanoes BY AARON CARNES

I

n 2014, a year after Jahred and Shawna Namaste—the core of reggae-soul band Love Eternal— left Santa Cruz and moved to Puna, Hawaii, they wrote a song called “Go With the Flow.” It was inspired by a volcano eruption that happened a few miles away from their neighborhood.

The song was released in November 2017 on the Good Life EP. Less than six months later, they experienced a volcano in a totally different way—on May 3, the Kilauea volcano erupted right in their neighborhood, making their home and those of many friends around them uninhabitable. The lava

continues to flow to this day, with air quality a major concern for nearby residents. A song that was intended as a metaphor for dealing with life’s stresses suddenly developed a new, more immediate meaning.

“It was easier [in 2014] to sit back and relax and trust that we could get out of the way. The lava was moving very slowly, and it was miles and miles away,” says Jahred. “This time is was less than a quarter-mile from our house, and we had to evacuate very fast.”

The couple stayed in Hawaii long enough for their kids to finish the school year, but then they came back to the mainland, where they

had to completely re-imagine their lives. They are touring as much as they can, and in between dates they stay with Shawna’s mom.

“We’ve been wanting to go for years; this made it so there wasn’t really much other option,” Jahred says.

This isn’t just any tour for the group. They’ll be raising money for the people of Hawaii in need of help by donating money from each show to the nonprofit Pu’uhonua.

At their upcoming show at Michael’s at Main, they’ll be playing music, but they’ll also be telling stories about their time in Hawaii, specifically focusing on what it was like living through this natural disaster.

“It’s hard to explain losing a whole community, and that community losing their homes, their jobs, their school, the connection of the community,” Shawna says. “It’s not just one devastation. There are black particles in the air. Shelters are overrun. The plants are dying.

Lava bombs are going off that sound like bombs.”

The group formed in Santa Cruz in 2003, and were an active part of the local reggae scene for a decade before relocating to Hawaii.

Among other things, they set up the Rejuvenation Fest.

Jahred and Shawna are the only two consistent members of the group.

They met on New Year’s Eve in 1999 at Saturn Cafe. They married some years later and visited Hawaii on their honeymoon in 2011, instantly falling in love with the island.

“When we met there was a lot of drumming and chanting going on,” Shawna says. “As our relationship evolved, we started writing songs, and it became our medicine. When we were having a rough time, we would write a song, and then we’d come back together to sing it.”

Though their sound is generally rooted in reggae, they don’t stay traditional in their approach, mixing in other elements like soul and pop.

“The message is more important to us than the genre,” Jahred says.

Reggae is a great framework but we love all kinds of music. The songs come through with intention in our heart. The musical aspects usually form around that,” Jahred says.

They continue to process the experience of dealing with the eruption, and Shawna says that new songs about it are in the works.

In the meantime, they’re trying to figure out if they’ll be able to move back to Hawaii, or find a new place to call home. And they are impressively philosophical about it.

“We all know we’re living in Mama’s house so to speak, and if Mama comes in and says she needs her space, you say, ‘alright, thank you’ and you move over,” Shawna says.

LOCAL BAND COERCION

Local punk rock supergroup Coercion is perhaps one of the least likely Santa Cruz bands to re-form. That’s because back when they came together in ’96, they only played once, at local punk rock spot the Riff Raff House. They also demoed some tracks, but that was it.

Two decades later, guitarist Luke Pabich contacted singer Jake Desrochers and suggested they revisit this old side project. Desrochers said yes, as did original bassist Tom Kennedy.

“I’d always really liked the songs. It was sort of this unfulfilled project we all walked away from for whatever reason,” Desrochers says. “It is like the same band, but on steroids. We know so much more now. The songs are more concise, the attitudes are more concise. It feels great.”

Back in ’96, it was a project mainly for Desrochers, Kennedy and Pabich, who were already in other local bands like the Lonely Kings, Death By Stereo, and Good Riddance. They all wanted an outlet to play punk songs that were darker and had more of a metal and post-punk influence.

“Everything punk in the late ’90s got fun-sounding, and we all like this sort of darker side to that,” Desrochers says.

The reunited band, which now includes Jim Miner on guitar and Anthony Garay on drums, has released an EP, Exit Wounds. They also have a second EP, Veritas, in the works, which they hope to release in late summer. Then they hope to do something they never got to do with this band: tour. Led by frontwoman and vocalist Amanda Platt, the band takes all of the ingredients of rocking Americana— country, rock, folk, blues—and whips them up into swinging, emotionally charged songs about death, loneliness, loss, and, as one reviewer put it, “getting the shit kicked out of you by love.” An artful storyteller making her mark on the international roots scene, Platt is one of the underexposed stars of the genre. Ani DiFranco was ahead of her time. Way back in 1990, the fiercely independent singer-songwriter launched her own record label, Righteous Babe, to release album after album of songs that challenged gender norms, brought conversations around bisexuality into the mainstream, drew attention to the impact of outsourcing and war on local communities, and more. In doing so, she became one of the unofficial spokespeople of her generation. With 20 albums now under her DIY belt, DiFranco remains an innovative artist and activist hellbent on positive social change. CJ

a performance artist and demented puppeteer. The twosome basically shares the stage all the time and provides a show of weird music accompanied by weird performance/ visuals. The show has everything: homemade instruments, puppets, oddball props, catchy yet creepy pop songs to get you on the dance floor. Oddly enough, it’s not two separate acts going on. It’s commingled nicely, and Miss Pussycat also provides vocals and percussion. A lot of insanity for just two people. AC

It’s hard to write about reggae vocal trio the Abyssinians without mentioning “Satta Massagana.” A runaway hit song that was originally rejected by legendary Jamaican producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd in 1969 for being too subversive, the tune, which translates to “He Gave Praise” and was eventually released on an album of the same name, has become a defining song of the genre. Though the band’s lineup has changed over the decades, it remains a giant of Jamaican music, and a favorite of reggae fans around the world. The current lineup includes founding member Bernard Collins.

A

paranoid, autocratic king, terrified of change, builds a wall to keep out strangers. His people react with dismay. Will the forces of peace, love, and common sense be defeated by one man’s irrational fear?

A story ripped from today’s headlines? Guess again. The year was 1968, and this vignette was featured on an early episode of a new children’s program called Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, on National Education Television (NET—soon to be replaced

by PBS). The Summer of Love was over, but the vibe of change that would cause so much cultural upheaval as the year progressed was already in the air.

The origin, influence, and legacy

of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood is the subject of the excellent documentary, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? It’s another engrossing peek behind the scenes of a popular culture phenomenon by filmmaker Morgan Neville, whose previous films were the Oscarwinning 20 Feet From Stardom, and The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.

As creator and star of Neighborhood, Fred Rogers is best remembered for his comfy cardigan sweaters, his relaxed, soft-spoken on-air demeanor, and the fanciful world of puppets and sing-along songs he created for his vast audience of preschool-age children. But in Neville’s skillful hands we see just how radical Mr. Rogers could be, not only in the way he tapped

into the darkest parts of the cultural zeitgeist to help kids cope with them, but also in insisting that every child is unique, valid, and deserving of respect. (A message that could not be more timely in the present, horrifying historical moment.)

Fred Rogers was on track to become a Presbyterian minister when he detoured into educational television in his native Pittsburgh.

He hated the violent, pie-in-theface slapstick of early children’s TV programming, and worked on early shows as a puppeteer and musical accompanist, developing his own approach. He wanted to connect with children as people, not just provide distraction, which he thought would be a much better

use of such a powerful new medium.

In an early TV interview, playing a series of musical modulations on the piano, he explains his mission as, “helping kids through the different modulations of life.”

The debut of his own show on WQED, Pittsburgh, in February of 1968, was not so auspicious. As one member of the former production team laughs, “If you took all the elements that make good television” (like expensive sets, and a well-known star), “and did the exact opposite, that was Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

Yet the show clicked with kids and was picked up by more PBS stations across the country. And soon enough, Rogers was tackling those “modulations.” After Robert Kennedy was assassinated, timid tiger puppet Daniel seeks comfort from one of the show’s human co-stars, who reassures him it’s natural to feel sad during scary times. When black families were chased out of a public swimming pool by white, chemicaldumping racists during the Civil Rights Movement, Mr. Rogers invited the black policeman character on his show to join him in soaking their feet together in Mr. Rogers’ wading pool.

The shy, sensitive puppet Daniel Striped Tiger, voiced by Rogers, also became Roger’s alter-ego on the show.

Kind-hearted, and deeply in touch with his own feelings, Daniel gave voice to the questions and concerns that Rogers perceived were in the minds of all children when life became too confusing. His intuition is borne out in footage of Rogers meeting kids and pulling out Daniel. He’s only a simple, slightly faded glove puppet, obviously attached to Mr. Rogers’ arm, but children respond with the same joy and awe as if he were alive.

Trust Fox News to provide a dissenting opinion; one pundit blames Rogers’ insistence that every child is “special” for creating a brainwashed generation that feels entitled. (To, um, basic human rights?)

But Rogers has the last word. To the compassion-challenged, he explains his simple message: “to let every child know they’re loved—and loveable.”

AMERICAN ANIMALS Heist movies are a dime a dozen these days, but this one is at least different in that it’s based on one of the real-life worst art heist attempts ever. Four college kids really did try to rob a nature book worth millions from a library in 2004, leading to a comedy of errors so unlikely that even when seen it probably won’t be believed.

The filmmakers have intercut the film’s narrative with interviews of the real-life criminals, who definitely have a lot of explaining to do. Directed by Bart Layton.

Starring Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner and Ann Dowd. (R) 117 minutes. (SP)

SICARIO 2: SOLDADO Taylor Sheridan is one of the best writers working in Hollywood today. His films like Hell or High Water and Wind River seem very different on the surface, but underneath it all they are brilliant modern takes on the Western. And, weirdly enough, the same was true of his first success as a screenwriter, 2015’s Sicario. A drug-war thriller about an FBI agent who goes down the black-ops rabbit hole at the U.S.Mexico border, it was marketed as an action film, but was about 100 times smarter and more relevant than the genre normally serves up.

Now, Sheridan returns to pen the sequel, which sees the violence and dirty politics escalating to new levels at the border, as Mexican cartels begin smuggling terrorists into the U.S. Directed by Stefano Sollima. Starring Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin and Catherine Keener.

(SP) UNCLE DREW Kyrie Irving was too injured to play for the Celtics most of this season, but apparently not too injured to star in this undoubtedly terrible basketball comedy based on the character Irving created for a series of Pepsi commercials. Will watching Irving ramble on in oldman makeup suddenly start being funny? Will co-star Shaquille O’Neal suddenly pronounce words at a frequency that can be understood by human ears? I don’t know! But I

have two words for this movie that both basketball and movie fans can understand: hard pass. Co-starring Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, and a bunch of other NBA players who retired at 40 and now have nothing better to do. Directed by Charles Stone III. (PG-13) 103 minutes. (SP) WESTWOOD: PUNK, ICON, ACTIVIST Vivienne Westwood may not have invented punk, but she certainly dressed it. How she transcended her working-class, rock ’n’ roll origins to become one of the most revered names in international fashion design— while staying true to her rowdy, anti-establishment roots—is the fascinating subject of this documentary by model-turnedfilmmaker Lorna Tucker. NOW PLAYING ADRIFT Never look up what the true story of a movie is before you see it! I saw the preview for this couple-stranded-in-theocean drama—which heavily pushed its “based on the incredible true story” angle—and couldn’t help myself. Based on what I read about the real story and what they showed in the preview, I’m pretty positive I know what the movie’s big twist is going to be. Don’t be like me!

(PG-13) (SP) HEARTS BEAT LOUD Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons star as a father and daughter who stumble into a viral internet hit, suddenly giving them an unexpected music career together. Will it be the feel-good

aging-bearded-dad-bondswith-hip-Millennial-daughter rock musical of the year? It’s a competitive category! But I’m going to go out on a limb and say yes. Directed by Brett Haley. Costarring Toni Collette, Ted Danson and Blythe Danner. (PG-13) 97 minutes. (SP) HEREDITARY It’s being called the scariest film of the year, and it stars … your mama! Well, not yours, exactly, unless you are Toni Collette. But like Get Out, It Follows and several other recent low-budget, high-concept horror movies, this one is out to make a point about how we all live in the shadow of our family history, as Collette’s character comes to realize after her matriarch mom dies and increasingly terrifying secrets are revealed. Co-starring Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and Ann Dowd. Directed by Ari Aster. (R) 129 minutes. (SP) HOTEL ARTEMIS Jodie Foster stars as the Nurse, who runs a secret emergency room for criminals in near-future Los Angeles in this sci-fi feature debut from writer-director Drew Pearce. Co-starring Sofia Boutella, Jeff Goldblum, Zachary Quinto and Dave Bautista. (R) (SP) INCREDIBLES 2 Normally, a sequel that takes 14 years to make is a dubious proposition.

But for this follow-up to the megahit about a family of superheroes coming to grips with their powers—which is, if not the best Pixar film of all time, certainly in the conversation—I think we’ll all make an exception.

Directed by Brad Bird. Featuring the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell and Samuel L. Jackson. (PG) 118 minutes. (SP) JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM It’s a bit ironic that the bad guy in this film is a corrupt businessman who wants to exploit the dinosaurs for terrible purposes. ’Cause, uh, that’s pretty much the story of how this movie even exists,

right? When you consider that this franchise has been creatively bankrupt since the awful first Jurassic Park sequel 20 years ago, it’s safe to say that no amount of Jeff Goldblum charmingly not understanding how to speak sentences is going to make this movie bearable.

Directed by J.A. Bayona. Starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and, ah, ah, yes, hmm, Jeff, ah, Goldblum. (PG-13) 128 minutes.

Full of epic images that probably should be experienced on the big screen, the film features breathtaking footage of the highest peaks in the world.

(SP) OCEAN’S 8 Steven Soderbergh promised there wouldn’t be an Oceans 14, but apparently he discovered a sequel loophole, which is that there are other numbers. So he’s producing this sequel in which Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean from the Ocean’s 11 films. And wouldn’t you know it, she’s into heists, too! Her all-woman team includes Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling and Helena Bonham Carter.

Directed by Gary Ross. (PG-13) 110 minutes. (SP) RBG Forget The Avengers Infinity War. Here’s a movie that’s really worth cheering about. This smart, sly, heartfelt documentary by directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West, enters the marketplace with the same quiet, unassuming, yet determined demeanor as its subject— legendary Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Basically, his early life story is: he came out of a plastic and cardboard box; moved into a house made of Lincoln Logs; flew around in a LEGO ship; made friends with a bunch of little green army men, with whom he invaded the fortress Darth Vader had set up on the couch; briefly dated Barbie; and then got lost for about four years behind some shelves that were too hard to check behind because there was an aquarium on top. I’m basing this all on what I witnessed at my house in 1978, but I think it’s pretty accurate and I hope this movie is careful to recreate the details accurately. Directed by Ron Howard. t’s become one of the most memorable dining experiences of the season, the Sustain Supper held in, by, and for the Homeless Garden Project. This year’s dinner in the fields, on July 14, begins at 4 p.m. with an informal tour of the vibrant gardens that helps orient visitors about the land, the harvests, the staff, and how the whole thing works. Prepare to be inspired by the tales of those whose lives have been changed by working this land. And prepare to be very well fed! Wine

and live music lead into the sit-down dinner itself, where four courses are served along with matching wines. Brief talks and testimonials on farm and environment topics we all care about lead up to this year’s keynote speaker, Congressman Jimmy Panetta, a man passionately devoted to sustainable farming in California.

At the Sustain Suppers in years past I’ve reconnected with old friends, met plenty of new neighbors, and been treated to some outstanding dishes made by local chefs. This

year’s Sustain Supper begins with appetizers made by Steve Wilson from Cafe Cruz. Salads of fresh greens and herbs grown on the Homeless Garden fields will be created by Sarah LaCasse of Earthbound Farms.

Vegan dishes will be made by Emilse Pereira Beck of San Francisco’s FoodZense. Beck studied culinary arts in Buenos Aires, cooked at Nobu in London and Gary Danko in San Francisco, and now teaches nutrition to various nonprofit institutions.

O

ne of the things that I love about El Salchichero, the sustainable craft butcher on the Westside of Santa Cruz, is that while they take what they do very seriously, they don’t take themselves too seriously. So while customers who visit their Ingalls Street shop will find exquisite cuts, charcuterie and seasonal sausages, they’ll also discover expertly crafted products that are a little more low brow.

Case in point: El Salchichero makes a killer corn dog. They started making them for Swift Street Courtyard neighbor Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing eight years ago when owner Emily Thomas wanted something to serve her guests after the kitchen at Kelly’s Bakery closed. Far more tasty than their county fair counterpart, I have eaten more of these delicious dogs—served hot from the toaster oven with ketchup and mustard and accompanied by a pint or two of organic ale—than I care to disclose.

The mastermind behind the corndog is owner Chris LaVeque’s mom, Marge Clemens. A skilled baker and cook whom LaVeques credits as his culinary inspiration, Clemens had never eaten a corn dog before

embarking on her quest to perfect the recipe. Without experience to draw from, she consulted many recipes before ultimately deciding to go with her gut and keep the flavors simple while using the best ingredients she could. “I know what I would like when I eat a corn dog, so that’s how I developed it,” says Clemens.

For the corn dogs, LaVeque created a pork hot dog with a simple spice profile, which Clemens dips in her buttermilk cornbread batter infused with spicy bacon fat before frying in lard. “We didn’t want anything to overpower the ‘corn dog experience,’ if you will,” says LaVeque. “The quality of the ingredients shines through when you bite in. You can taste the corn, you can taste the buttermilk, the pork fat, the sausage.”

Clemens also creates El Salchichero’s hand pies, pasties, sauces and mustards. In everything she cooks, she says she strives to be simple and straightforward with her flavor profiles, “so that you enjoy what you’re eating, and you want to eat another one.”

Occupation: Retired, Santa Cruz Fire Department Hobbies: Golfing, walking, Japanese gardening, Astrological Sign: Taurus Who or what got you shopping here? KEITH: “When I first got out of the Navy, I was working for Schilling Slaughter House, and I delivered beef to Shopper’s.”

INGI: “We lived on Broadway, which is close by, and my parents shopped here. I had a cousin working here in the ‘50s. Shopper’s has always been charming and convenient.” KEITH: “I should point out that we’re here almost 7 days a week.” Really? INGI: “We shop daily for our meals which may include fish, produce, desserts, breads (Gayle’s, Alfaro’s,) eggs (Glaum) and chocolate, dark with nuts.” KEITH: “We’re big fans of Shopper’s wine department, especially California releases. It’s extensive and distinctive.”

What do you folks like to cook? KEITH: “Steaks, lamb, pork chops, chicken, corned beef and more. We got some salmon the other night, and the butchers specialcut the perfect amount we needed. It was delicious!”

INGI: “Shopper’s butcher’s shop is the best in Santa Cruz!” KEITH: “I appreciate Shopper’s cheese selections, such great variety.” INGI: “Shopper’s produce is always fresh and beautiful. We buy both organic and conventional; it’s all great, and the pricing is good. I like the fact that we can find everything we need here. The market’s size is perfect. That’s one of the things that has always made Shopper’s a great place to shop.”

Do you prefer shopping local? KEITH: “Oh yeah.

Shopper’s is more intimate. The butchers are great. We know the checkers, and they’re all very nice. I converse with everyone, so by the time I leave, I know anyone who is new and their names. I have fun here.” INGI: “We feel acknowledged at Shopper’s. The staff is friendly and helpful. I’ve always felt comfortable at Shopper’s. It’s very well run.” KEITH: “It has a lot to with the on-site management. It makes a big difference.” INGI: “If someone were new to the community, I would tell them, they have to try Shopper’s: the people are nice, the products are quality across the and the pricing is fair.”
