Infamy What a crappy article on Mitt Romney (“About Mitt,” Cover Story, Oct. 10)! Since you did not give any “clue” as to Geoffery Dunn’s credentials, I looked him up on the Internet. The fact that he authored

the infamous book The Lies of Sarah Palin, tells it all. This article seemed below the purview of the Metro of Silicon Valley. MARCIA HARRIS

Waste Water In recommending a yes vote on Measure B, you note that the Santa Clara Valley Water District “made so many mistakes in getting the measure on the ballot that voters can rightly question the competency of the agency, referred to by its critics as the Golden Spigot for its wastefulness.” The Water District does not need the estimated $548 million to

be exacted from property owners under Measure B. It just needs to stop squandering its normal income and abandon bad ideas such as adding a poison called fluoride to water and the bloodstream of water users. GARY WESLEY | MOUNTAIN VIEW

Stay Safe Sadly, this is how the majority of [Rose Herrera’s] co-workers feel about the police department. The good news is that more and more agencies/cities are coming forward to hire these “lazy” officers. Those of you staying—please stay safe, your city leaders continue to show their

true colors about your sacrifices for the citizens of San Jose. MURPHY | SAN JOSE

From Metrofb.com (Our news story of Oct. 17 about the woman who shouted obscenities at Campbell Vice Mayor Evan Low at Campbell’s Oktoberfest got lots of comments.) ELIZA NISHIDA: She’s lucky it wasn’t me she said that to. MICHAEL PHOTOPOULOS: Sadly, beer will bring out ugliness in some. CHRIS LIBERTI: Doesn’t surprise me. People are low-lifes. CHIP CASPER DEVILLE: That is lame and unfortunate.

Yahoo co-founder and Piedmont Hills High School graduate Jerry Yang has loaned his collection of ancient Chinese calligraphic works to the Asian Art Museum in San

Francisco. The show, titled “Out of Character: Decoding Chinese Calligraphy,” encourages visitors to “find the drama beneath the surface.” That said, I sense a growing EastWest co-fluency in Silicon Valley. At the VIP opening, Yang did not take questions from the press. Instead, he brought prepared questions and interviewed himself at the podium. Behind him, as he spoke, the audience viewed a blown-up version of The Sutra on the Lotus of the Sublime Dharma by Zhao Mengfu (1254–1322), one the ancient calligraphic scrolls included in the exhibit. Later, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee rolled in from across the street, and the two characters, Yang and Lee, proceeded to view the exhibit. Speaking of the show, much drama does exist beneath the surface. Even if one can’t read Chinese, one still experiences a sublime, multilayered

art form. In sshort, Chinese calligraphers try to express the strength(s) h( ) off their character through their painted characters. Specific rules dictate the brush strokes and the characteristics of the scripts. Different types of paper respond differently to the ink or the brush. Somewhere between poetry and choreography there seems to be an elaborate network of correspondence connecting the various components of the process. What you see on paper is just the final result, the evidence, of an artful life. As I experienced the show, I kept dwelling on the phrase “find the drama beneath the surface,” primarily because it describes my view of how everything unfolds in Silicon Valley to begin with. Yang is someone who grew up in east San Jose of Asian descent, founded a major component of the Internet and made a fortune in the tech industry— but finally wanted to reconnect with his own culture and simultaneously give back in the process. I would like to see more tech entrepreneurs collecting Asian art and contributing something to culture besides database

management or Western hierarchical categorization of everything. On the surface, maybe this is superficial, but when drilling down deeper, there must be somewhere else this idea can go—some other way Silicon Valley can benefit. There must be a way to take it further. Since Silicon Valley constantly reinvents the future and since people around here are always scheming the next big thing, I just couldn’t help but ask longtime Silicon Valley strategist Sheridan Tatsuno what he thinks about entrepreneurs loaning out their Asian art collections. As a futurist and someone who’s lived in both the Eastern and Western realms of Silicon Valley, Tatsuno said Yang might be a trendsetter. That is, within seconds of talking with Tatsuno, the muse of business development took over our conversation, spinning it in an entirely different direction—into a philosophy of matchmaking. Unlike what you see on reality TV, parts of Silicon Valley are filled up with single engineers who’ve made a fortune working 70 hours a week, yet they’re socially inept, they live in blank-walled houses with no interior decoration, they still don’t have girlfriends and they could definitely use some instruction in art collecting. “Asian Art for Entrepreneurs 101” could be the new wheel hub for single twentysomething engineers. The target audience is much larger than you realize, believe me. Think about it. This would serve many purposes. For one, it would teach left-brain engineers how to appreciate the artist within every single one of us. It would also help reinvigorate the floundering world landscape of art collecting. If this sounds crazy, it probably is, but I can think of many other Silicon Valley ideas that were initially written off as nonsense. Can’t you? Just like Chinese calligraphy, things always exist beneath the surface, suggesting that everything is indeed connected. As Goethe once said: East and West can no longer be separated. Silicon Valley is leading the world. Again.

IKE MAKES RIGHT Ike Shehadeh of Ike’s shows off his new shop’s logo.

Sandwich King

O

NE HEARS Ike’s before seeing Ike’s. The new gourmet sandwich shop, which opened Monday across the street from Santa Clara University, bursts with a contagious energy spread by exuberant employees, loud music and chattering customers. Bright colors and quotes cover the walls, and the huge sandwich board dominates the proceedings. The board is filled with sandwich names like the “Brandi Chastain,” “Steve Jobs” and “SF Giants,” as well as many more Bay Area legends and favorites. Owner Ike Shehadeh says that once he started naming sandwiches after athletes and celebrities, their namesakes started coming in to sample his creations. “Not everybody that has a sandwich named after them has been in, although many have,” he tells me. This is the ninth Ike’s in the Bay Area, and a 10th is already under construction. The shops have developed quite a following. In 2009, the flagship San Francisco store was featured on the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food. The sandwiches are massive, and the bread is baked fresh to order. A generous helping of Ike’s “Dirty Secret Sauce” is applied to each—and baked into the bread for good measure. The “Menage à Trois” is Ike’s most popular sandwich; it includes halal chicken, real honey, honey mustard, barbecue sauce and pepper jack, Swiss and cheddar cheese. Sandwich prices range between $7 and $11. Ike shares the story of how he got started, saying that he loves to eat and opened the first Ike’s, at 16th and Sanchez in the Castro in San Francisco, in 2007 as a hobby. But the shop quickly grew so popular that “I had to quit all my jobs to sell sandwiches, since people kept on coming.”—Liz Wassmann IKE’S 2235 The Alameda, Santa Clara

But the place serves some authentic, flavorful Indian comfort food and street-food bites. They score points right off for their convenient, self-service chutney bar, which also includes raita (yogurt dip) and complimentary sambar (pea and potato stew). The sambar is hearty, subtly seasoned and has a spiciness that sneaks up on you. Since the cafe specializes in dosas—fermented crepes made from rice and lentils—I wanted to be sure and give those a taste. The clerk enthusiastically recommended the Mysore masala dosa ($5.99). It was so big there wasn’t enough room for it on the plate. The crepe was lightly coated with red garlic chutney and filled with potatoes and onions, making it a satisfying vegetarian dish, with just that slight bitter flavor of turmeric. For finger foods, the vegetable pakaras ($3.99) are a good choice. These fritters made of spinach, onions and eggplants are a nice crunchy, salty snack. The combination of veggies gives them a taste familiar to fried okra. Though tasty on their own, they’re even better when dipped in the sweet sauce, which is also available at the self-serving station. Another interesting south Indian item is the vada ($2.99), a kind of savory donut. Bland on its own, the vada comes alive when served with one of the three chutneys. I recommend the cilantro-coconut version. For the biggest bang for your buck, Dosa & Curry offers six combination meals between $3.49 and $7.49. I ordered the No. Four ($7.49), which includes butter chicken, naan and chicken biryani, plus a fountain drink— enough food for at least two people. The butter chicken wasn’t bad, though there was a bit too much tomato in the curry. The chicken biryani, however, didn’t disappoint. The chicken was served inside a bowl of rice and still on the bone piping hot. The rice was crunchy, as if it had just been scraped off the bottom of the frying pan. The combination of sweet, sour, savory and spicy all melded quite naturally.—Aaron Carnes DOSA & CURRY CAFE 345 S. Fourth St., San Jose

READY TO SWISH-SWISH The hot pots at Shabuway are assembled from a variety of tasty ingredients.

Savory Sounds

F

OR AN UNUSUAL first date or a fun place to take visitors in Santa Clara, Shabuway fits the bill nicely. The restaurant is chic but casual, and the wait staff is friendly and very attentive, but the main reason to try Shabuway is its distinctive style of serving food. Translated from the Japanese, “shabu-shabu” means “swish-swish,” which refers to the sound that beef makes when being swirled around in hot broth.

Shabuway’s menu focuses on the traditional Japanese hot pot. Customers generally choose from either seaweed or spicy miso broth. Indecisive customers can opt to have the two broths served side by side in a bowl with a curving divider that makes it look like a yin-yang symbol. Diners then select the kind of meat they want from an impressive list of cuts, each of which is served with rice and vegetable plates. There are also quite a few additions that can be made to the vegetable plates, including assorted mushrooms and ramen noodles. After the orders are placed, the culinary interactivity begins. Servers bring out the selected broth and place it on a stove top located in the center of the table, where it simmers and swirls. The meat and veggies come next. These items are tossed into the steaming broth at the patrons’ leisure, creating a relationship between consumers and consumables that doesn’t often exist at other restaurants—except maybe at the few remaining fondue places. Customers “swish-swish” the beef back and forth in the broth, allowing the meat to cook fully while enjoying the “shabu-shabu” sound. Once the food is cooked and infused with the flavors of the broth, guests extract it with their chopsticks and dip the morsels into the delectable sauces provided with the meal. To top it all off, guests can choose from a selection of mochi ice cream to finish their meals on a sweet note. Shabuway is a small regional chain with outlets in Santa Clara, Mountain View, San Mateo, San Jose—and even the Philippines. Eliza Lamson SHABUWAY 2783 El Camino Real, Santa Clara

RACE

The Stage, San Jose Wed-Thu – 7:30pm, Fri-Sat – 8pm, Sun – 2pm; $20-$40 This is the last weekend to catch up with San Jose Stage Company’s rawedged production of David Mamet’s play Race about three lawyers (one white, two black) wrestling with the defense of a white plutocrat accused of raping a black woman. In Mamet’s world, it’s not simply one group oppressing another, but a free-forall in which everyone is prejudiced and resentful in some way and won’t hesitate to exact revenge on the people they hate. Race is most successful at demonstrating just

how complicated and difficult its subject can be, quashing those naïve voices that insist that a “post-racial” or “color blind” society has already arrived. (SC)

MONSTAVILLE MUSIC Johnny V’s, San Jose Friday – 9pm; $5 The Forever D.O.P.E. tour is coming to Johnny V’s with a whole lot of underground Bay Area hip-hop talent. The tour was organized by Monstaville Music, an independent San Jose label started by Trey C and Playa Rae, who will also be one of the

acts performing. Before Monstaville Music, Trey C and Playa Rae had been individually producing banging club tracks, but once they joined forces, their beats became more grandiose and with greater mainstream appeal. Regardless of production value, Trey C and Playa Rae are fervently committed to their independent status. Also on the bill: Oakland rapper J. Lately, San Francisco rapper Dregs One and San Jose turntablist DJ Eternal. (AC)

BROTHER ALI The Catalyst, Santa Cruz Fri – 9pm; $14/$19 Brother Ali knows everyone thinks he’s black. He is, in fact, whiter than white, a genuine albino whose condition has made him legally blind. He’s turned the odd ironies of his career into a lifelong campaign against any divides—black

or white, mainstream or underground. He’s also adept at bringing together both ends of the songwriting spectrum, dropping fiercely political raps one minute, and the next taking everything down to a brutally honest personal level in lyrics about his divorce, or living homeless with his son. By now, you’ve probably realized there’s no one in hip-hop quite like him. (SP)

These Halloween shows continue to generate the most excitement from their fans. It’s no wonder, it’s where the Rivals really let loose and have fun with games and costume contests. This year, they are adding something new to all the fun—they are showcasing local artists’ horror art. Also playing are The Devil Himself, Dimidum and Relapse. (AC)

twee-pop songwriting, that makes them the kind of band that will force a smile out of listeners—like it or not. Yet under the cute exterior, they are a raw rock & roll band, though not quite punk-rock, despite their affiliation with punk label Asian Man Records. It’s more like pre-punk garage rock. As much as they pound out garage tunes, they are equally drenched in sunny Beach Boys pop sensibilities. The Oddly Even and Slime Girls also play. (AC)

panelists jump in with quick quips, Poundstone lets her mordant zingers steep a bit before delivering them with a measured tempo and the tang of subtle sarcasm. She also maintains a lively Twitter feed: “I was stuck behind an undecided voter on the freeway today.” Poundstone is touring on behalf of public libraries, which need all the support they can get. Atlantic has taken the South Bay by storm. The band’s latest album, Digital Tension, was just released this past July. Picture Atlantic’s catchy alternative-rock sound (in the vein of the Killers, Death Cab for Cutie and Coldplay) remains intact, but the hooks and key changes aren’t quite so obvious. The choruses are a little more low-key and nuanced—although there’s no lack of those lush soundscapes the group is known for. This is the Halloween edition of their bimonthly Rock Hop event. Circa 1800, a Liverpool orphan is brought to the moors. He endures floggings throughout his stepchildhood, in which the only relief comes from his platonic other half and stepsister, Catherine. As a girl, Catherine (Shannon Beer), is broad-faced and tough. As a lady (Kaya Scodelario), she’s a poseur

with great luminous eyes, cold as quartz—not a lark but a hawk. Arnold (of the excellent Fish Tank) modernizes the story somewhat. Although she keeps the costumes of the period, the arrogant brother, Hindley (Lee Shaw), looks and moves like any English skinhead you’d avoid. And James Howson, the nonprofessional actor Arnold hired as Heathcliff, is of African ancestry. The bad children’s initials left as graffiti on the dingy walls make their home look like the corridor of a housing estate. In the nature scenes, Arnold’s eye for weeds, rainwetted rocks and briars resembles the scoping of these Yorkshire hills in the documentary Rivers and Tides about the environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy. While you can see where Arnold has tacked close to the present,

there’s no maddening sense of anachronism. A startled character says, “What the fuck?,” where Emily Brontë might have written, “He uttered an oath,” but this tactic doesn’t break the frame. The book is more violent than many remember: the drunken Hindley threatening to crop his child’s ears like a pit-bull’s; the story of the bird’s nest with the small skeletons in it. Arnold pauses over the furred and feathered corpses gathered for the table, with the blood in close-up dripping from a hung-up pheasant’s eye; and shows us the live Spaniel punished in lieu of herself. (The official seal saying no animals were injured is a relief.) Arnold’s insistence on this cruelty is part of the paganism and hardness of this land. It’s essential to our knowing what life there would look like. Howson may appear uncomfortable in one weeping scene, but his limits as an actor are otherwise an asset. He keeps his mystery; he’s handsome and sullen. When Hindley calls Heathcliff a “blackguard,” it’s meant to be a

racist slur. But perhaps Hindley is right. The source of Heathcliff ’s money has baffled scriptwriters for generations. Looking at Howson one thinks that maybe Heathcliff was a highwayman, a Captain Macheath. As for the melodrama, the muddy physicality of Arnold’s version undercuts it. Brontë herself proved how young and fast they died in those days. The makeup is authentic, and in a shot of Paul Hilton’s Mr. Earnshaw, the specter of tuberculosis is practically sitting on his chest. In one scene, a newborn’s squalling turns, without a beat, into the scrape of a gravedigger’s spade. Arnold’s cuts to the text include the removal of the pastry crust and doily with which the novel was first served. Gone is the framing device of a commentator, that tourist exclaiming at the bad manners and the quaint dialect. The opening shot is of a swaying Heathcliff, as good as dead in the haunted farm he now owns: a sty, a byre, more like. This is the muddiest Wuthering Heights seen—also the most immediate. The young Cathy and Heathcliff (Solomon Glave) wrestle in the mud, and Cathy flashes a clouded smirk of triumph even as she’s pinned; we’re seeing the exact moment of pubescence arriving. The moment is doubled later when we see Cathy as a fancy, kittenish married lady. Cathy’s riding costume provides the only real red in a movie where even the blood is brown or black. She forces Heathcliff into the mud this time; with the sole of her boot on his face, she asks, “How could you have left this? How could you have left me?” We see the witch in her, in the condescending kiss she gives her husband as she goes riding with her true lover. This story of cursed love is so imperatively told, you temporarily forget how it comes out.

MADDER THAN MAX ‘Wake in Fright’ is an Australian thrill ride from 1970 restored to its queasy glory.

Way Outback ALMOST LOST but now gorgeously restored to views of startlingly sun-baked landscapes, Wake in Fright (1971) also has grindhouse draw. (Animal lovers, be warned: There’s a brutal hunt stitched together from some documentary footage of a professional slaughter of kangaroos.) Wake in Fright is a morally slippery movie. Initially, you’re as appalled as the intelligent but lofty school teacher John Grant (Gary Bond), a Sydneysider contractually obligated to teach in a oneroom school in the back of beyond. He’s heading back to the city for a smotheringly hot Christmas break. Befriended by a copper (the first serious Australian movie star, Chips Rafferty), Grant goes on a gambling and beer bender in the fictional nearest big town, Bundanyabba: “The Yabba.” The local drunks, some of them serious barbarians, pick him up and invite him into their 24hour binge. This could have been jolly: a stuck-up teacher bonds with friendly, hardworking, plain men during Christmas time. But the oversize Santa statue in town cackles like a maniac, heralding Grant’s discovery of the barbarism in him—and the discovery of something else. He has a doctor’s help for these diagnoses in the brilliant, anythinggoes performance by top-billed Donald Pleasance. He’s the town’s physician, a

Chekovian observer and a drunk—nay, not just a drunk, but the kind of person who, when asked what he does, says, “I drink.” The writer is Evan Jones, Joseph Losey’s frequent collaborator. Losey had wanted to direct this film, which ended up Wake in Fright in the hands of Ted Kotcheff, who R; 114 min. helmed the somewhat Opens Friday, Camera 3, San Jose similar debut of Rambo, First Blood. Here, as throughout Losey’s films, is the queasiness at the thought of people getting too close. How times do change, though. The Yabba is played by Broken Hill, a tourist draw today; in a decade or two, it was going to be hosting the three trannies of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. (That famous bus has been parked there permanently.) The more remote Australia seems, the more Kotcheff ’s Twilight Zone–ish approach is a punch to the gut. The film’s shocking revelation has also been softened by some producer’s idea of a happy ending. But Wake in Fright is rich and weird and oddly thoughtful: Nightmare Alley with kangaroos instead of chickens, the kind of movie that arrives when a nation ceases to be a colony and gets really ready to study itself. HALLOWEEN—MISFITS: Just about any Misfits song will do, but as Glenn Danzig’s definitive artistic statement on the subject, this one earned its name. Its under-two-minute gutter-punk assault is so bruising it takes several listens just to get a handle on the lyrics—but as usual, the wait is rewarded.

MONSTER—KANYE WEST FEATURING JAY-Z AND NICKI MINAJ: One of the best songs on Kanye’s masterpiece My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, “Monster” is the American Psycho of music. The song messes with a different metaphor, comparing murder, mayhem and other assorted horrors to the music biz (rather than Wall Street), but the basic ideas have a lot in common. The controversial video really drives the point home, and if you ever wondered what it would look like if one of Nicki Minaj’s personas attacked another one, it’s a must see.

DEVIL TOWN—DANIEL JOHNSTON: From the reigning king of outsider music comes one of the most emotional and striking monster songs of all time. In under a minute, Johnston paints a vivid portrait of every goth’s dream hometown. ZOMBIE—E-40 FEATURING TECH N9NE, BROTHA LYNCH & KUNG FU VAMPIRE: With a catchy hook (“if you’re a zombie,

fiend”) courtesy monster, ghoul or fiend”) of San Jose’s Kung Fu Vampire, E-40 teams with Brotha Lynch—a horrorcore rapper long before the word existed— and Tech N9ne to spin morbid rhymes for the perfect zombie apocalypse. I AM A VAMPIRE—FUTURE BIBLE HEROES: If “I Am a Vampire” had been written in the ’80s, it would have been an alternative dance-club favorite. The song takes the perspective of the eternally young, chic vampire. Sure, you have to feed off of people and avoid the sunlight, but that’s a small price to pay for an eternity of being fabulous. GANGNAM STYLE—PSY: OK, we’re sort of joking, but everyone’s going to be doing the dance on Halloween this year and there will be more than a few bar-hopping Psy look-alikes. You might want to learn it. It’s not hard. SUPERSTITION—THE KILLS: From the moment the guitar kicks in on the Kills’ “Superstition,” it creates a sort of vague foreboding anxiety that the best horror movies conjure up in the first 20 minutes—before anything bad has happened yet. There is just something about the minimalist, dissonant sounds this duo conjures up that is just creepy.

Scare Tracks

That, compounded with a repetitive song about superstition, creates a scary Halloween tune, where the beast that lurks in the shadows is fear. WHAT’S HE BUILDING IN THERE?—TOM WAITS: What is scarier than a reclusive next-door neighbor who’s receiving mysterious packages? Tom Waits channels the fun, spooky ambience of Disney’s Haunted Mansion, as he narrates a brief story of a suspicious man in the neighborhood. MIND’S PLAYIN’ TRICKS ON ME—GETO BOYS: Not just one of the best rap songs ever, it may also be the best ghost story ever set to a beat. The song weaves layers of guilt, violence and slipping sanity together to make you remember we don’t need paranormal activity to be haunted. I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE—ROKY ERICKSON AND THE ALIENS: Roky Erickson led the psychedelic rock band 13th Floor Elevators in the ’60s, but spent much of the next decade in a mental institution. When he returned to music, he started singing about aliens, Satan and monsters in an incredibly intense, emotional manner. While most of The Evil One is powerful, screaming acid rock, “I Walked With a Zombie” is a somber ballad, and by far the saddest, most emotional song on the album. THE MAN COMES AROUND—JOHNNY CASH: Now that this song has been used in a bunch of scary movies, TV shows and trailers (most notably the Dawn of the Dead remake), it’s been pretty much accepted as a modern horror classic of country music. Cash meant it as a serious hymn, and it almost makes religion cool. But isn’t it always like that with the Book of Revelations? BELA LUGOSI’S DEAD—BAUHAUS: The 2009 horror film The Collector was the second film to use this song almost in its entirety. It’s maybe the quintessential Halloween song by now—the weird guitar effects and insane lyric delivery by Peter Murphy make it timeless. THAT’S THAT—GROOVE GHOULIES: Lead singer Kepi Ghoulie is such a monster movie fanatic that, even on this 35-second love song, he can find no better words to express his feeling than comparing it to his favorite Halloween monsters, giving us the immortal line, “I need you like zombies need brains.”

DXp\i?Xnk_fie\ “JUST AIN’T GONNA WORK OUT” was Mayer Hawthorne’s first foray into modern soul music. The red, heart-shaped 45 released on Stones Throw in 2008 caught fire in a year of forgettable singles, propelling Hawthorne’s career into the stratosphere. Four years later, he is revisiting his roots on Oct. 26 at the Pagoda Lounge. With its doo-wop touches, minimal sound and undeniable catchiness, the record instantly gripped fans of hip-hop and soul. It soon became a hard-to-get collectors’ item, and Mayer took off on world tours shortly after. With his thick-rimmed glasses, vintage suits and bow ties, the rapper-turned-DJ-turned-singer has pushed his success further than ever imagined.

Pagoda Lounge Friday, Oct. 26, 9pm

Mayer’s now a regular on the late-night TV circuit and plays huge international music festivals; he’s even collaborated on tracks with Snoop Dogg of all people—not too bad for an indie-rapper who almost retired when “underground rap” began losing steam in the early 2000s. Since then, he has worked with modern dance troupes like SebastiAn, while many of his songs have been used on major TV shows like Ugly Betty. Although he cites Curtis Mayfield and the late J Dilla as influences, he has also performed with more modern, commercial acts like Foster the People and Bruno Mars. His latest release, How Do You Do, showed more of a focus on funk and modern R&B than the Motown vibes that marked his first release. Mayer’s undeniably strong songwriting keeps him busy regardless of genre. Amid official albums, Internet-only releases and wild collaborations, Hawthorne sticks to his guns, too, making one-off DJ appearances to the surprise of many fans. His DJ chops aren’t bad either, as he’s played alongside turntable maestros like J. Rocc of the Beat Junkies. Though his career is in full stride, he seems to always return to basics. Everything will come full circle when Hawthorne returns to San Jose for a rare, live DJ set. After all, he has San Jose’s own Peanut Butter Wolf to thank for putting him on Stones Throw to begin with. His stop in San Jose also marks the two-year anniversary of the “Live at the Pagoda” series at the Fairmont Hotel, which has brought acclaimed acts like Adrian Younge and Toro y Moi to town.—David Ma

The notion that it’s morally bankrupt to refrain from chasing a man is an idea out of some future gender-neutral utopia where everyone wears Star Trek uniforms, eats single little cubes of lunch and grows babies in a Mason jar in their front room. As I’ve written before, any sexual encounter had a hefty potential cost for a woman during the Stone Age—a particularly crappy time to be a single mother. Because of this, women evolved to be choosier about partners, and men coevolved to expect that of them. Times have changed, but our psychology really hasn’t. So, when a woman throws herself at a man like a big flopping flounder, he’s likely to

duck—suspecting that she probably isn’t worth having if she’s so easy to get. This is unfortunate, but whining endlessly about it is an ineffective strategy for getting what you want. What you’re really arguing for is, “Why shouldn’t I be able to throw all self-discipline out the window and have the man I want drop down my chimney like Santa?” In a similar vein, I often wonder why I’ve been unable to become incredibly wealthy by napping. (Welcome to real life. Please visit often in the future.) The answer is neither throwing yourself at a man nor waiting for him to notice that you dropped your glass slipper. You flirt to indicate that you’d be interested in going out with him, if only he’d ask. Flirting takes patience and self-control, but it’s playful and fun. Kind of like tag. You run a little, and if all goes well, the guy chases you. Men just love to chase things—women, animals, purse snatchers. In the United Kingdom, they even have a tradition of chasing a big wheel of cheese down a hill. Wait—don’t get ideas. You will need to flip your hair and make eye contact and teasing remarks. You can’t just throw yourself down a grassy incline.

(If your stove broke, would you stop eating?) Chances are, your retirement from sex has less to do with recent penile developments than believing that the only “real” sex is the hot dog into the Lincoln Tunnel variety. Sex therapist Dr. Marty Klein points out in Sexual Intelligence that many people make the mistake of defining what sex is by how their bodies work at 18 or 25, and then, ridiculously, cling to that vision

into their 30s, 40s and beyond, when they have far different bodies. Because physical intimacy is pretty essential for maintaining emotional intimacy, thinking this way can be relationship-wrecking. Turn off the TV and start making out and doing the kajillion sex things that don’t require perfectly functioning hydraulics. Watching Paula Deen re-enact Last Tango in Paris with a pork chop has its merits, but exploring Klein’s advice—that “there isn’t any part of your body that can’t be erotically charged”—should prove far sexier and a lot less likely to give you diabetes.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21–April 19): In the coming days, many of your important tasks will be best accomplished through caginess and craftiness. Are you willing to work behind the scenes and beneath the surface? I suspect you will have a knack for navigating your way skillfully and luckily through mazes and their metaphorical equivalents. The mists may very well part at your command, revealing clues that no one else but you can get access to. You might also have a talent for helping people to understand elusive or difďŹ cult truths. Halloween costume suggestions: spy, stage magician, ghost whisperer, exorcist.

TAURUS (April 20–May 20): The coming week could have resemblances to the holiday known as Opposite Day. Things people say may have meanings that are different or even contrary to what they supposedly mean. Qualities you usually regard as liabilities might temporarily serve as assets, and strengths could seem problematical or cause confusion. You should also be wary of the possibility that the advice you get from people you trust may be misleading. For best results, make liberal use of reverse psychology, freaky logic, and mirror magic. Halloween costume suggestion: the opposite of who you really are. GEMINI (May 21–June 20): I don’t have a big problem

with your tendency to contradict yourself. I’m rarely among the consistency freaks who would prefer you to stick with just one of your many selves instead of hopscotching among all nine. In fact, I ďŹ nd your multilevel multiplicity interesting and often alluring. I take it as a sign that you are in alignment with the fundamentally paradoxical nature of life. Having said all that, however, I want to alert you to an opportunity that the universe is currently offering you, which is to feel uniďŹ ed, steady, and stable. Does that sound even vaguely enticing? Why not try it out for a few weeks? Halloween costume suggestion: an assemblage or collage of several of your different personas.

CANCER (June 21–July 22): An avocado tree may produce so much fruit that the sheer weight of its exuberant creation causes it to collapse. Don’t be like that in the coming weeks, Cancerian. Without curbing your luxuriant mood, simply monitor your outpouring of fertility so that it generates just the right amount of beautiful blooms. Be vibrant and bountiful and uidic, but not unconstrained or overwrought or recklessly lavish. Halloween costume suggestion: a bouquet, an apple tree, a rich artist, or an exotic dancer with a bowl of fruit on your head. LEO (July 23–Aug. 22): I hope your father didn’t beat

you or scream at you or molest you. If he did, I am so sorry for your suffering. I also hope that your father didn’t ignore you or withhold his best energy from you. I hope he didn’t disappear for weeks at a time and act oblivious to your beauty. If he did those things, I mourn for your loss. Now it’s quite possible that you were spared such mistreatment, Leo. Maybe your dad gave you conscientious care and loved you for who you really are. But whatever the case might be, this is the right time to acknowledge it. If you’re one of the lucky ones, celebrate to the max. If you’re one of the wounded ones, begin or renew your quest for serious and intensive healing. Halloween costume suggestion: your father.

VIRGO (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): Do you know how to tell the difference between superstitious hunches and dependable intuitions? Are you good at distinguishing between mediocre gossip that’s only 10 percent accurate and reliable rumors that provide you with the real inside dope? I suspect that you will soon get abundant opportunities to test your skill in these tasks. To increase the likelihood of your success, ask yourself the following question on a regular basis: Is what you think you’re seeing really there or is it mostly a projection of your expectations and theories? Halloween costume suggestions: a lie detector, an interrogator with syringes full of truth serum, a superhero with X-ray vision, a lab scientist. LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): I am ofďŹ cially protesting you, Libra. I am staging a walkout and mounting a demonstration and launching a boycott unless you agree to my demand. And yes, I have just one demand: that you take better care of the neglected, disempowered, and underprivileged parts of your life. Not a year from now; not when you have more leisure

time; NOW! If and when you do this, I predict the arrival of a ood of personal inspiration. Halloween costume suggestion: a symbolic representation of a neglected, disempowered, or underprivileged part of your life.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): “It’s so ďŹ ne and yet so

terrible to stand in front of a blank canvas,â€? said French painter Paul Cezanne. Many writers make similar comments about the excruciating joy they feel when ďŹ rst sitting down in front of an empty page. For artists in any genre, in fact, getting started may seem painfully impossible. And yet there can also be a delicious anticipation as the ripe chaos begins to coalesce into coherent images or words or music. Even if you’re not an artist, Scorpio, you’re facing a comparable challenge in your own chosen ďŹ eld. Halloween costume suggestion: a painter with a blank canvas.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): As you

contemplate what you want to be for Halloween, don’t consider any of the following options: a thoroughbred racehorse wearing a blindfold; a mythic centaur clanking around in iron boots; a seahorse trying to dance on dry land. For that matter, Sagittarius, I hope you won’t come close to imitating any of those hapless creatures even in your non-Halloween life. It’s true that the coming days will be an excellent time to explore, analyze, and deal with your limitations. But that doesn’t mean you should be overwhelmed and overcome by them. Halloween costume suggestions: Houdini, an escaped prisoner, a snake molting its skin.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): “Does anyone know where I can ďŹ nd dinosaur costumes for cats?â€? asked a Halloween shopper on Reddit.com. In the comments section, someone else said that he needed a broccoli costume for his Chihuahua. I bring this up, Capricorn, because if anyone could uncover the answers to these questions, it would be you. You’ve got a magic touch when it comes to hunting down solutions to unprecedented problems. Halloween costume suggestion: a cat wearing a dinosaur costume. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): The Live Monarch Foundation made a video on how to ďŹ x a buttery’s broken wing (tinyurl.com/FixWing). It ain’t easy. You need 10 items, including tweezers, talcum powder, toothpicks, and glue. You’ve got to be patient and summon high levels of concentration. But it deďŹ nitely can be done. The same is true about the delicate healing project you’ve thought about attempting on your own wound, Aquarius. It will require you to be ingenious, precise, and tender, but I suspect you’re primed to rise to the challenge. Halloween costume suggestion: herbalist, acupuncturist, doctor, shaman, or other healer. PISCES (Feb. 19–March 20): It’s not a good time to

wear Super-Control Higher-Power Spanx, or any other girdle, corset, or restrictive garment. In fact, I advise you not to be a willing participant in any situation that pinches, hampers, or conďŹ nes you. You need to feel exceptionally expansive. In order to thrive, you’ve got to give yourself permission to spill over, think big, and wander freely. As for those people who might prefer you to keep your unruly urges in check and your natural inclinations concealed: Tell them your astrologer authorized you to seize a massive dose of slack. Halloween costume suggestions: a wild man or wild woman; a mythical bird like the Garuda or Thunderbird; the god or goddess of abundance.

Homework: Exhausted by the ceaseless barrage of depressing stories you absorb from the news media? Here’s an antidote: http:// PronoiaResources.com.
