Summertime Fun

All’s Faire The long-dormant Redwood Mountain Faire kicks off the Santa Cruz summertime festival season 0G ;/@7/ 5@CA/CA9/A

ELPING to organize an all-day music and arts festival for a hoped-for turnout of at least 3,000 is no easy task. But Nancy Macy has pulled if off before. Sandy-haired and spritely in a “San Lorenzo Valley Redemption Recyclingâ€? T-shirt, she speaks enthusiastically about the Redwood Mountain Faire materializing on the near horizon—this Saturday, to be exact. This year’s Faire marks the revival of a tradition, dormant for the past 14 years, whose roots are planted firmly in the memories of those who lived in the San Lorenzo Valley during the 1980s. “It was really a major part of our lives,â€? says Macy, one of the ambitious young women who in 1978 formed the Valley Women’s Club, the organization responsible for dreaming up the Redwood Mountain Faire. The seed was planted in 1980 with an arts and crafts fair that turned over a profit of $300 on champagne and baked goods sales. Organized by Linda Moore and Diana Troxell, who are still members of the VWC, it was called the “Highlands Faireâ€? in honor of its location at Highlands Park. Since art and music go together like peanut butter and jelly, the VWC recruited live musicians the following year and changed its name to the “Redwood Mountains Faire and Folk Music Festival.â€? The Faire grew over the years, attracting headliners such as local string phenom Bob Brozman, Taj Majal (1984), Etta James (1986) and David Grisman (1993, the year it rained), to name a few. It grew until 1996, the year it became too expensive to pay for itself, and has existed only in memory since. ¨ !

It was nostalgia for those good old days that made the Community Connection Committee, a branch of the VWC, vote to sponsor a revival of the Faire, an event they say brought a “wonderful feeling to several generations of SLV folks, year after year for 18 years. One difference is location—the Faire will be at Roaring Camp this year, rather than Highlands Park, a decision that will save thousands of dollars on shuttle buses. Roaring Camp will provide a train to shuttle festivalgoers from the parking lot to the fairgrounds. The success of this year’s Faire leans heavily on the support of local businesses and nonprofit organizations. Not-for-profit groups like the Mountain Arts center, Camp Joy, Glenn Arbor School and South Street Centre will get a percentage of the profits. “It’s a family event, we want people to come and enjoy the music, look at the art, buy the art, support local artists and businesses—that was the original intent, says Macy. But the Faire has benefits beyond dollars and cents. “The community in the early days of the fair was very badly divided. There were huge conflicts between individuals and organizations that wanted to promote growth and development in the valley, says Macy. “The Redwood Mountain Faire brought people together. An army of businesses and volunteers from the valley are behind the scenes this year, though the spotlight shines on

the 33 talented artists and 13 bands on two stages they will proudly host. Headlining the main stage is Matt Costa, a lyrically gifted and successful California songster sure to draw old friends and new alike. Older festivalgoers will get a blast from the past when local band Snail breaks out of its antique shell once again to shake the redwoods with its groovy jams. Brothers Comatose bring organic folk reminiscent of The Devil Makes Three complete with the eerie voice of the saw, and Harmony Grits will pepper the mix with the down-home bluegrass no festival is complete without. The Faire will feature local artists and their unique wares, like garden ornaments constructed from recycled objects by Jane Wrankle and handcrafted jewelry by Nancy Moore. Food will be provided by Blue Sun Catering while the Felton 4-H dads will be barbecuing up a scrumptious feast of meats and veggies. And to wash it all down, five local microbreweries will provide beer along with souvenir pint glasses to remember the day.

THE REDWOOD MOUNTAIN FAIRE is Saturday, June 5, 11am–7pm at Roaring Camp, 5401 Graham Hill Road, Felton. Tickets are $20 adv/$25 door for adults; $15 adv/$20 door for seniors and students; $5 kids 6–12; free kids 5 and under. Tickets available at http://redwoodmountainfaire.com. ¨

Hot Springs Hideaway

7

T’S LIKE THIS: a soak-seeker can make the 3-1/2-hour drive north to Harbin Hot Springs, where the clothing is optional and the dressing rooms are co-ed. Or he or she can make the 2-1/2-hour drive south to Avila Hot Springs in San Luis Obispo, where other people’s children go screeching down the water slide and Disney films screen each Saturday night. Or our mineral bath monkey can head east on Highway 152, turn south at I-5 and be in shooting distance of a quirky, remote, not-necessarily-naked-but-not-Magic-Mountain-eitherfor-God’s-sake hot springs resort straight out of an Old West movie set. With its five campground sites, six rustic cabins and common restroom facilities, Mercey is not for wimps. Only one of the tiny cabins has a stove or refrigerator, so most people barbecue and bring coolers. In August and early September it can be savagely hot. And the silence in the dusty compound, which dates back to the early 20th century, is almost eerie. But for those who crave total escape, Mercey is the ne-plus-ultra getaway. A small 80-odddegree swimming pool is the heart of the operation. Nearby, a half-dozen newly restored clawfoot tubs are plumbed with hot and cold mineral spring water, and a new bathhouse boasts a sauna. Up the hill the old bath area (now clothing-optional) has clawfoot tubs in a charming roofless wooden enclosure with a wood-burning stove for cold nights. Between the unparalleled stargazing, the otherworldly sense of the place and ongoing improvements, Mercey won’t be off the radar for long. But it will always be off the beaten track.

SUP, Bro?

ROM A DISTANCE, it looks easy: stand up straight, power forward with the paddle, check out the scenery, don’t fall off. But having spent every previous experience involving a surfboard in various stages of wipeout and exhaustion, I know that looks can be deceiving. So as I step on the massive stand-up paddle board, face my toes forward and drag the oar through the water, it’s a surreal experience that I’m not toppling embarrassingly into the surf. Yet Scott Ruble, my instructor for the day, doesn’t seem that surprised. “I told you it was easy, says Ruble, who, along with his wife, Leslie, just opened Covewater, Santa Cruz’s first SUP-only surf shop (though most surf shops and even Kayak Connection rent the boards, and it’s easy to find lessons). “Just try to keep straight up and dip your paddle perpendicular into the water and push forward. That’s it! The Rubles opened their shop in April in an effort to get the corner on the market of a sport that’s quickly making gains on traditional surfing as the best way to ride the waves. Nothing more than a longer, wider and more buoyant surfboard that comes with a paddle, SUP surfing combines the leisurely transportation benefits of a kayak with the wave-catching abilities of a surfboard. The boards themselves are huge: usually between 9 and 13 feet long and at least 4 inches thick. For my first lesson, I’m given a large and stable board—the 12-foot-1-inch Laird Hamilton Series, along with a carbon fiber Surftech paddle. New, the gear would cost $1,600. Gliding through the water is both easy and efficient, and when a light breeze picks up, my upright body serves as a makeshift sail, propelling me quickly across the surface. Around the harbor, curious sea lions peek above the lapping waves and sea otters doze lazily on their backs. After and hour or so, Ruble says I’ve mastered the basics. The next lesson involves leaving the harbor and braving the waves that have bedeviled me as a surfer. Somehow, armed with my big board and paddle, I think I’ll do better this time. “Anyone can do this sport, Ruble says confidently. “Not like surfing, where you’ll spend months getting beat up and still won’t get it. This is just about having fun. Curtis Cartier

ANTA CRUZ theatergoers have an exciting season ahead of them, with forthcoming productions from both Shakespeare Santa Cruz and Cabrillo Stage. This year, the first theatrical offering from Cabrillo Stage reprises last year’s I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (June 18–July 3), a series of comic vignettes in which four actors play some 40 different characters braving the trials of dating, marriage and family. Next up is Swing! (June 25–July 18), a musical extravaganza chronicling the rise of swing music in ’30s and ’40s America the same way the music originally took root: through song and dance. It’s all a buildup to Cabaret (July 23–Aug. 3), the Tony Award winner revolving around the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy hotspot symbolizing life on the eve of the Second World War. Shakespeare Santa Cruz will kick off its own summer season with a non-Shakespeare play, James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter (July 20–Aug. 29), which examines the lovehate relationship and treacherous domestic feuding between Henry II of England and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine. It stars company artistic director Marco Barricelli in his first Shakespeare Santa Cruz production since taking the job. Next to open will be Love’s Labor’s Lost (July 21–Aug. 29), Shakespeare’s most sophisticated comedy, in which the King of Navarre and his three young lords fall in love with a visiting princess and her ladies, despite having just sworn off women and devoted themselves to scholarly pursuits. Finally, the company presents its production of Othello (Aug. 3–29), the tragedy of a Moorish general who succumbs to the head games of his deceitful companion, Iago. ERSONALLY, I’m all about the June 25 Blue Oyster Cult show, and not because I’m all gettin’ my irony on over that “Reaper cowbell skit on SNL (“I’m Burnin’ for You is a much better song, anyway). See, children, I lived the ’80s. And I will proudly relive them, right here, this summer, for free, one Friday night Beach Boardwalk show at a time. A Flock of Seagulls, Loverboy, Naked Eyes, The Tubes— they all beckon. Bands from earlier and later eras fill out the summer schedule, the better to lure Boomers and Gen Y kids: Herman’s Hermits, Eddie Money, Starship, Santana singer Gregg Rolie, the Spin Doctors. There’s no telling how hard we’ll rock that beach. Traci Hukill

T was an open rehearsal at the Civic Auditorium, and cellist Alisa Weilerstein was playing Osvaldo Golijov’s soaring Azul like her life depended on it, head f lung back, eyes closed, jaw furiously working over a wad of gum. It was a classic Cabrillo Music Festival moment, transcendent but surprisingly casual. The very fact that Santa Cruz is home to one of the most cutting-edge music festivals in the country sets the stage for scenes like this each August. This year the festival, directed, as always, by Marin Alsop, is pulling out all the stops with a guest lineup that includes composers Philip Glass, Jennifer Higdon and Kevin Puts and artists Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird and Colin Currie. A number of free concerts dot the two-week program, along with the ever-popular free open rehearsals; tickets to the main events run in the $30–$50 range, more for the prestigious Music in the Mountains event. /@B 4=@ /@B SANTA CRUZ COUNTY has so heartbreakingly few art galleries that surviving locally requires an artist to employ as much creativity in marketing as in art-making. This fact inspired artists Sara Friedlander and D. Hooker to organize “Art for Art 2010, a weeklong exhibition at 415 River St. in Santa Cruz. Two years ago the duo mounted “Art for Art 2008, spotlighting many nationally known resident-artists who are virtually invisible in their hometown. The very successful show also raised funds to develop artist studios at the Tannery Art Center. “Art for Art 2010 reflects more sober realities. “Many artists are struggling just now without unemployment, health insurance, basically without safety nets. We hope that we can raise enough money to establish an Artists Assistance Resource Fund as emergency aid for Santa Cruz County artists, says Friedlander. Another irreproachable goal combines with another memorable exhibition. Near the entry, Jody Alexander has stitched a pattern of roots invading book pages filled with Gothic text: ideas taking hold elegantly. From the opposite wall, Bridget Henry’s woodblocks gleam in satiny-thick viscous colors, telling stories of curious characters within surreal worlds. Jim Collum’s insightful observations in platinum print photographs range from affectionate distance to intimate views of a single flower, heavy with raindrops. RR Jones creates a deep link within the people he photographs, their cultures so distinct, their humanity so familiar. Michel Tsouris shows whimsical Chagall-like figures cast free from gravity, floating in a brilliant world of animated architecture and amorphous space. Rose Sellery’s droll humor and dazzling craftsmanship are the delivery mechanisms for weighty ideas in such works as Punching Bag, a prim little dress of stainless mesh, mounted on a pedestal that rights itself if pushed over, atop “1,000 apologies. Susana Arias’ totems rear up playfully, backlit by the windows. One, Red Trees, laughs at gravity in shiny cherry red and chartreuse. Andy Ruble’s massive stoneware pots seem like relics from some future industrial age, complex atomic particles perhaps, aching to be touched. Ah for a silver brooch by Carol Webb and a bracelet heavy with memory by Lynda Watson: these sculptor-jewelers are showing in the precious metals corner. Tobin Keller reveals weighty insights, but through many layers, each its own universe. The 30 artists here are some of the best this county has to offer. (Maureen Davidson)

ART FOR ART 2010 continues at 415 River St., Santa Cruz, through Friday, June 4; hours are Tuesday–Thursday 2–6pm. Free. Closing reception in conjunction with the First Friday ArtWalk, 5:30–9pm; $5, includes a raffle ticket. (www.artforart.org)

Director Thomas Balmes studies a year in the life of four babies born in four distinctly different places: Mongolia, Namibia, San Francisco and Tokyo. Guess who gets the Robeez flowered shoes? 17BG 7A:/<2 (PG13; 108 min.) Many movies are called “The Little Film That Could—Raymond De Felitta’s film deserves the name; the tale has tallness as well as heart. It concerns a tangle of confusion hitting the Rizzos, a suburban family that doesn’t realize how extended it is. Andy Garcia excels as Vince, a prison guard from a hidden waterside enclave in the Bronx. On the job, Vince encounters his own son Tony (Steven Strait) from a long-ago affair in Jersey and he decides to bring Tony home to do some day-labor without telling his wife his true identity. But Vince has another secret: he’s been taking acting classes in Manhattan, without informing his hostile, lynx-eyed wife, Joyce (Julianne Margulies, never better). The rest of the family have secrets of their own: son

Vince Jr. (Ezra Miller) is a chubby-chaser with eyes for the 400-pound woman next door, and daughter Vivian (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) has been moonlighting as a stripper. The tangle of lies is resolved nicely. City Island has fine waterscapes; Emily Mortimer is very soulful as the acting partner with whom Vince shares a deepening friendship; the ageless Alan Arkin has six very good scenes as a weary acting teacher who has seen generations of Brando imitators come and go. Provoking a family feud at a dinner table, or gazing at a BBW porn site as if it were the Holy Grail, Miller is also outstanding. Hard to tell whether this is the general snazz of a cocky young actor, or something more long lasting, but Miller has everything Robert Downey Jr. had at the age when Downey was making films like Back to School and Johnny B. Goode—so time will tell. Noisy at times, (so is a good episode of The Honeymooners), but always gentle and likable, the movie comes out in favor of the sins of the flesh. It celebrates the actor’s life and the actor’s luck. (RvB) B63 17BG =4 G=C@ 47</: 23AB7</B7=<

(PG-13; 118 min.) What begins as a mess of good actors flailing for something to do devolves into a tangle of expatriate loungers keeping their secrets. The City of Your Final Destination concerns Omar (bland Omar Metwally), an apprentice academic who travels to South America to convince the surviving relations of a oneand-done novelist to cooperate in the writing of a biography. But at the Uruguayan finca where they all live, Omar finds himself drawn to the writer’s waiflike mistress (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who (shock) shared the house with the great man’s embittered widow—and when Laura Linney plays embittered, you can hear it in Buenos Aires. premises: the novelist’s charming but unreliable elder brother, Adam (Anthony Hopkins). With Ismail Merchant gone, James Ivory directs by himself; longtime collaborator Ruth Prawer Jhabvala scripts from the novel by Peter Cameron. (Read a full-length review on MovieTimes.com.) (RvB) 7@=< ;/< (PG13; 125 min.) Struck by heavy-metal poisoning from his atomic pacemaker, Tony Stark (a roguish Robert Downey Jr.) is besieged by enemies: a Russian ex-con with access to his technology (Mickey Rourke being the Bear That Walks Like a Man), a gladhanding competitor (Sam “I’m Always Best in Small Doses Rockwell) and last but not least the U.S. government. Politically

muddled is the worst you can say about it; a power fantasy ought not to lose the idea of which way the power is flowing. Despite a middle section that vamps for time, Jon Favreau is successful in making this an invigorating meld of screwball comedy and robot-fighting action; Scarlett Johansson is most decorative as the agent known elsewhere as Black Widow, and Gwyneth Paltrow shows a nimbleness previously unseen (she has to act fast to get up to Downey’s speed). Broad, playful, well-cut and economically done, this movie isn’t just the first of the summer blockbusters—it’s the model for how they all should work. Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton are rival royals who join forces to stop an evil ruler (Ben Kingsley) bent on destroying the world by unleashing a massive sandstorm. Set in medieval Persia, based on the video game. (TH) @=07< 6==2 (PG-13; 130 min.) Overlong and graceless to the extreme, Robin Hood looks like three long movies spliced into one unwieldy feature. This prequel concerns Robin’s involvement in the end of the crusades, the civil war and the little-known French invasion of England in the early 1200s. The tale is interspersed with more political palaver than The Phantom Menace. “Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) decamps from Richard the Lionheart’s

army and goes into the countryside to pose as a dead knight; the father-in-law of the deceased (Max von Sydow) decides to do a Martin Guerre on this imposter, as does the widow Marian (Cate Blanchett in a wig nearly as tall as she is). This has to be the least-sylvan Robin Hood ever made. Crowe looks less like a fox and more like a logy, depressed pit bull as the film tries to chug around him with more montages of burning villages and more meetings of angry Plantagenets. (RvB) B63 A31@3B 7< B637@ 3G3A (R; 127

min.) Elegant but staid murder mystery nibbles around the edges of the Dirty War. It’s the “Forget it, Jacobo, it’s Argentinatown view: the search for justice evaporating

in 1974 Buenos Aires, with present-day sequences to frame a reopened investigator. It’s leavened by a fine Mulder and Scully anti-romance between an attractive female criminal investigator for the government, Irene (Soledad Villamil), and her attractively crumbling, Mastroiannish male assistant, Benjamin (Ricardo Darín). Director Juan Jose Campanella is a regular director of House M.D. The film is as restless and jokey as a cop procedural show; every scene is on the mark, but there aren’t enough counterpoints to the assured f low of the story. The slick, vengeance-is-mine punch line isn’t very impressive either, though it’s probably why the Academy preferred this to the

far better White Ribbon, where the fascist culprits got away. Saying that, though, would be assuming the voters didn’t have eyes for Villamil, an assured 40ish beauty whose performance is the secret in this movie’s success; her covert smile is the film’s signature piece. It won the Oscar for best foreign film. (RvB) A3F /<2 B63 17BG

Astrology Free Will

By Rob Brezsny

For the week of June 2 /@73A (March 21–April 19): If you’d like to be in supreme alignment with cosmic rhythms this week, I suggest that you completely avoid using the f-word. Likewise, you’ll maximize your chances for taking advantage of fate’s currents if you refrain from ever using the s-word, the c-word, the m-word, and the bword. As a general rule, the more precise and the less lazy you are in using language, the more willpower you’ll have and the better able you’ll be to attract the experiences you want. It’s always invigorating to choose your words creatively and kindly, of course, but especially now.

B/C@CA (April 20–May 20): If you grow a mere acre of peanuts, in a good year you’ll harvest a big enough crop to make 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches. That might be more than you need. If you just plant enough peanuts to fill a basketball court, you’ll still have enough to make over 3,200 sandwiches, which would provide you with more than eight every day for a year. This is a good phase of your astrological cycle to be thinking thoughts like these, Taurus. You will have more insight and motivation than usual if you formulate long-term plans to create abundance for yourself.

53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): As they orbit the planet, astronauts witness as many as 15 sunrises and sunsets each day. Time isn’t really sped up for them, but it seems like it. I expect you to experience a similar feeling in the coming weeks, Gemini. You may have the fantasy that you’re living the equivalent of four days every 24 hours. The light will be brighter, the emotions richer, and the teachings more highly concentrated. If you give yourself to the surge with relaxed enthusiasm and focused receptivity, your evolution will be expedited.

1/<13@ (June 21–July 22): I think you’re ready to stand up and reclaim your power from the soul-sucking influences that have been swindling you. But you don’t have to turn this showdown into a melodramatic epic that brings down the house or blows up the world. In fact, I think it’s better if you stay low-key as you transform the dynamics that have been grinding you down. The adjustments may be nowhere near as major as you imagine. Why? Because most of what you need to do is make shifts in your own attitude. The necessary changes in outer circumstances will arise naturally once you’ve done that.

:3= (July 23–Aug. 22): If I were writing the story of your life as a fairy tale, the current chapter would be filled with enchanted events. You’d hear animals’ thoughts in your head and you’d remember your past lives. You’d be able to find accurate oracles in the shapes of clouds, the ringing of distant bells, and the patterns of shadows on the sidewalk. You would see the help that’s invisible to everyone else and know what to do in order to get the love you want. Take advantage of the available mojo, Leo. Use it to set people free, including yourself.

D7@5= (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): How skilled are you at getting things done and making things happen? This is different from just being busy; it’s not the same as scrambling around attending to whatever tasks are at the forefront of your attention. I’m talking about actually cranking out excellent results that manifest a comprehensive vision of your intentions. I’m talking about working hard and smart to serve the big picture, not working frenetically and mechanically to rid yourself of nervous mental energy. You’re in a phase when these themes are especially important, Virgo. Be a master of the details; don’t let the details master you.

:70@/ (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): In her essay “Write Till You Drop, author Annie Dillard offers advice to aspiring writers. I’m going to quote a certain passage that happens to be apropos for you Libras right now. “Spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for later . . . give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. A1=@>7= (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): In a Rolling Stone interview, musician John Mayer suggested that Tiger Woods could have avoided his terrible troubles if he had just chosen to masturbate more. Rather than

Kick it With us All summer long!

literally acting out his obsessive sexual urges with a jillion women who weren’t his wife, why not contain them in the fantasy realm? I suggest you consider applying this principle as you make your decisions in the coming weeks, Scorpio—not just in regards to your sexual life, but in other areas as well. There may be times when you could prevent an influx of unnecessary chaos simply by conducting a conversation in your imagination rather than by having it with the actual person who seems to be agitating or enthralling you.

A/57BB/@7CA (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): There are very few people who can lick their own elbows, and up until now you have probably not been one of them. Judging from the current astrological configurations, however, I’m guessing that a lot of you Sagittarians are about to be more flexible, limber, and acrobatic than usual—not just in your mental attitudes but possibly even in your physical abilities. At least metaphorically speaking, you’ll be able to bend over backwards without damaging your dignity. You could also stretch and twist yourself into poses that have previously been impossible. So who knows? Maybe you’ll find a way to plant a kiss on your own elbow. 1/>@71=@< (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): The TV comedy series Community takes place on the sleepy campus of a community college. It features the hijinks of seven misfits who are older and weirder than their fellow students. In one episode, an inept female security guard chases the lead character, Jeff, hoping to catch and cite him for a farcical misdemeanor. As she races along, shouting for him to stop, she takes out her can of pepper spray and shoots several streams in his direction. The cloud of noxious stuff doesn’t reach him, but she runs face-first into it as she continues her pursuit. It irritates her eyes and forces her to halt. Later, in telling her associate what happened, she says she was the victim of “self-inflicted friendly fire. I worry that you’ll soon be tempted to carry out a metaphorical version of that, Capricorn. Please don’t.

/?C/@7CA (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): Here’s how author Leo Buscaglia described the rigorous requirements for being a great lover. You must “continually have the subtlety of the very wise, the flexibility of the child, the sensitivity of the artist, the understanding of the philosopher, the acceptance of the saint, the tolerance of the scholar, and the fortitude of the certain. I’m sorry to report that no one I’ve ever known has met those high standards! In the coming weeks, however, you Aquarians will have the potential to get halfway there. Life will conspire to boost every effort you make to be a great lover.

>7A13A (Feb. 19–March 20): Recently I was remembering the names of streets near the house where I grew up in Allen Park, Mich. Although I didn’t register it at the time, they were lyrical, euphonious, and evocative: Philomene, Shenandoah, Osage, Luana, Cleophus, Gahona. As I walked and played on them day after day for years, my imagination breathed in the magic of their exotic sounds, unobtrusively nurturing my poetic sensibilities. I bring this up, Pisces, in the hope of inspiring a comparable rumination in you. Think back on the riches of the past whose importance to your development you may have underestimated. It’s a good time to re-connect with the power and glory of influences that brought out the best in you almost without your knowledge.
