City Council questions June 23 special session

The Dumaguete City Council last week passed a Resolution addressed to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Oriental expressing their belief that the special session conducted by the City Council on June 23, where they passed an Ordinance appropriating P140 million for some City projects, is invalid.

Councilor Agustin Miguel Perdices moved to pass the Resolution, citing a requirement in the Local Government Code that in order to hold a special session, a notice shall be served at least 24 hours before such special session. This requirement was not complied with, he said.

PDEA: NegOr free from ASF 359 brgys drugaffected The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency said on July 7 during the Provincial Peace and Order Council special meeting that 359 out of the 557 barangays in the Province are affected with illegal drugs.

However, PDEA Agent Francisfil Tangeres said 145 barangays have been declared cleared, while 53 are free from illegal drugs in the Province.

Tangeres presented the Barangay Drug Clearing Program updates per District with drug affectation, with a total of 218 barangays in the 1st District of which 72.47 percent are drug-affected, 27 cleared, and 33 drug-free barangays.

The 2nd District has 174 barangays of which 64.36 percent are drug-affected, 49 cleared, and 13 declared drug-free barangays.

For the 3rd District, of the 165 barangays, 53.39 percent are drug-affected, while 69 are declared cleared, and seven are drugfree.

The PDEA official said the geographical location of the Province is a transit point, and one of the crucial drop-off points of illegal drugs coming from Cebu, Negros Occidental, Manila, and Mindanao, of which drug personalities are taking advantage.

Dr. Alfonso Tundag, quarantine officer of the Bureau of Animal Industry here, on Tuesday issued this statement in reaction to a recent report from a national news outfit that Negros Oriental already had ASF cases.

“That was fake news. There is no truth to that report, and we are assuring our people here that it is still safe to consume pork and by-products as the Province is still ASF-free,” Tundag said in mixed English and Cebuano.

In fact, the regional executive director of the Department of Agriculture in Region 7 had issued a statement debunking such news, he said.

The provinces of Negros Oriental, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor comprising the Central Visayas region continue to be free from ASF, he said.

Pigs, pork, and by-products like chorizo from areas not affected by the ASF are allowed entry to the Province, he added.

Tundag said the Provincial Veterinary Office, in coordination with local agriculture officers in the towns and cities, is conducting a regular random sampling of pigs in the Province to test for ASF. So far, all the tested pigs were negative for the ASF virus. (Judy F. Partlow/PNA)

Farm-to-market road opens

The Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project has turned over an 18.5-kilometer farm-to-market road worth P317 million to Guihulngan City.

DA7 OIC-Regional Executive Director Joel Elumba said the farm-to-market road that traverses barangays Hilaitan, Maniak, and Trinidad in Guihulngan aims to uplift the living conditions and improve the livelihood of the people.

“This road motivates farmers to become more productive,” said Elumba.

The farm-to-market road will greatly benefit the agriculture sector and the DA is here to support all the needs of the farmers, he added.

Also identified under the Critical Infrastructure and Investment Protection Security Operation of the Philippine Army, the project completion can also protect and secure the government flagship programs and projects.

The government’s Comprehensive Social Benefits Program has benefited the families of 42 military and police personnel in Negros Oriental who were either killed or wounded in action.

Krystle Jade Bato, information officer of the Department of Trade & Industry in Negros Oriental, said on Wednesday the agency handed out livelihood kits to the beneficiaries in 2019, 2020, and 2022.

The CBSP beneficiaries for 2019 who each received P6,000 worth of Negosyo kits include four soldiers/ paramilitary who were killed in action (KIA), and four personnel who were killed in police operations (KIPO), Bato said.

In 2020, those who received P10,000 worth of livelihood kits each were 20 military troops wounded in action (WIA); seven wounded in police operations (WIPO); one KIA; and four KIPO. This year, the families of two KIAs were granted P8,000 worth of Negosyo kits each.

The DTI-Negros Oriental was not able to distribute these livelihood kits in 2021 as the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises were prioritized amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, Bato said.

“The CBSP beneficiaries received Negosyo Kits as part of the government’s efforts to take care of the troops and police personnel who are either wounded or killed in the line of duty,” she said.

Executive Order 110 tasks the Department of the Interior & Local Government and Department of National Defense to jointly lead in the implementation of the CBSP, she added.

The DTI is one of the many agencies that take part in the CBSP, a program that was rolled out in line with former President’s vow to take care of the families of military and police personnel who are either killed or wounded in action or police operations.

Avian flu test required for poultry

Live chickens and other poultry being brought outside of Negros Oriental must be first tested negative for avian influenza prior to travel, the Bureau of Animal Industry of the Department of Agriculture here said on Wednesday.

Dr. Alfonso Tundag, BAI quarantine officer and provincial chief, said that this is to prevent the spread of avian influenza, a viral disease that infects domestic poultry and other types of birds, such as ducks.

Previously, only those coming into Negros Oriental from other areas were being monitored and required to present negative laboratory tests for bird flu and other requirements.

Tundag said former Agriculture Sec. William Dar, who stepped down from office last July 1st, issued a memorandum stating that the ingress and egress of chickens, ducks, and other birds must require laboratory testing.

“Even if it is just one live rooster for cockfighting, it

would require testing first and must be negative for the bird flu virus before it can travel outside of the province,” he said in mixed English and Cebuano.

People here have to coordinate with the Provincial Veterinary Office so that the blood serum extracted from the chickens that are up for travel can be sent to Cebu City for bird flu testing, he added.

Security personnel at the airport and sea ports have been alerted of this requirement, the quarantine officer said.

Negros Oriental remains to be avian influenza-free.

Meanwhile, Tundag said there is no shortage in Negros Oriental amid a public perception here of a low supply of dressed chicken which has raised the current prices.

He said there is plenty of incoming dressed chicken from Bacolod City or Cebu, and the province is also sending chicken to other areas like Zamboanga. (PNA)

YATTA conducts workshops in Amlan

The Youth Advocates through Theater Arts (YATTA), in partnership with the Philippine Educational Theater Association’s Advocate Right to Safety Zone for Children, and the local government of Amlan through its Municipal Social Welfare & Development Office held two simultaneous workshops from July 12-14.

One workshop was a Training of Trainers on Positive Discipline, facilitated by YATTA Executive Director Dessa Quesada-Palm, and current YATTA President Benjie Kitay.

It was attended by 18 participants consisting of municipal social workers, day care teachers, and VAWC desk officers.

The second workshop was a Basic Integrated Theater Arts Workshop on Positive Discipline, facilitated by YATTA Arts Zone Coordinator Nikki Cimafranca and YATTA vice-president Mellard Manogura.

It was participated in by more than 20 Sangguniang Kabataan leaders, as well as other youth members of Amlan.

Cimafranca described the importance of these trainings.

“Corporal punishment is still a common practice in homes, schools and the community. Although we have laws that protect children from abuses, we also need to change people’s attitudes and perception that equate discipline with punishment. Our hope is that we can have more conversations and reflections about these practices, and rehearse approaches utilizing Positive Discipline principles.”

Comelec to register voters in malls

Following the ancient Ottoman proverb, the Commission on Elections has transferred the registration of voters to shopping malls here to attract more registrants for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in December.

Lawyer Ian Macaraya, election officer of this capital, said on Thursday the voters’ registration at the City Mall started Wednesday and end on July 16, and at the local Robinsons Place shopping mall from July 18 until July 23, the deadline for the activity.

“The registration for the SK and barangay elections started on July 4 and at first there was a low turnout of people who signed up due to the location of our office,” he said.

The ComelecDumaguete office is on the second floor of a building at the city public market complex and does not have enough space to cater to many people. Further, it is not convenient for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, Macaraya added.

Invest in lifeguards The Philippine Coast Guard in Negros Oriental has urged local government units to allocate a budget for water search-and-rescue training in their localities as more tourists arrive in the Province.

Lt. Junior Grade Mark Tolentino, Coast Guard Negros Oriental station commander, told the media on Tuesday that while part of their mission is to save lives at sea, they also have other tasks and functions such as maritime safety, maritime law enforcement, maritime security, and marine environmental protection.

Having water searchand-rescue-trained personnel in each locality would be a big help to the PCG as they can act as first responders during emergencies, he said.

Tolentino said they are willing to undertake the training but a letter request is needed.

“So far, we have not received any requests yet but we are visiting the different towns and cities to inform them of our availability to conduct the training,” Tolentino said.

He said there were previous requests from the

congressional districts in Negros Oriental sometime last year but this was addressed to the PCG national headquarters.

“I don’t know why it has not materialized yet but hopefully this will come to fruition,” he said in mixed English and Cebuano.

Tolentino said it would be a good idea if LGUs were to agree on a joint training that would cater to bigger participation but with combined budgets for food, accommodation, and other requirements.

The Coast Guard commander highlighted the need for the water searchand-rescue & lifeguard training, considering that Negros Oriental is famous for its beaches, and the influx of travelers to the Province is increasing after its borders were opened.

Meanwhile, 41 lifeguards from different resorts in Dauin and Zamboanguita have completed a fourday training by the Coast Guard’s Maritime Safety Support Unit, as requested by the Negros Oriental Diver’s Association.

Entomological dengue surveillance is now being conducted in different towns and cities in Negros Oriental amid rising cases of the viral disease, a key official of the Department of Health here said on Thursday.

DOH-Negros Oriental Provincial Officer Jennifer Remollo said the intensified monitoring of dengue cases and the entomological surveys of dengue vector mosquitoes come on the heels of a continuing rise in infections over the past weeks.

The agency noted in its latest weekly report the fourth dengue-related death this year, and a 124-percent increase in cases from Jan. 1 to July 9, compared to the same period last year.

Records show that 807 dengue cases were reported for that period this year versus 361 cases with zero deaths for the same period last year.

“The local government units that have the highest number of cases are now undertaking the entomological surveys to evaluate and determine the presence of the Anopheles mosquitos that carry and transmit the virus between humans,” Remollo said.

Other activities include house-to-house visits and impregnation (soaking curtains with insecticide) curtains and mosquito nets as preventive measures against the spread of dengue, she said.

Some of the LGUs conducting the entomological surveys are Tanjay City, Canlaon City, and Sta. Catalina, while training is undergoing in this capital city for the same survey soon, she added.

The spike in dengue cases in Negros Oriental started in June when quarantine restrictions in relation to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic were significantly lowered.

There’s another way you can benefit from your mobile phone, aside from being glued to social media apps: enrolment.

Mobile phone enrolment is now ongoing for public school learners in the elementary and high school levels in this Capital as the school year 2022-2023 is set to begin next month.

Dr. Gregorio Cyrus Elejorde, Department of Education-Dumaguete Division superintendent, told the media on Wednesday that parents are encouraged to enroll their students early with the use of their mobile phones to avoid unnecessary exposure to other people in the light of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

“We have a mobile app where learners or their parents can use for enrollment and it is user-friendly with fewer requirements as the schools already have a database of these students in the previous years,” Elejorde said.

He said the parents do not even need to worry about bringing a school card for enrollment as a system is already in place to cater to that need.

“Only those who do not have access to a mobile phone can appear in-person at the schools to enroll their child or children although the number would only be minimal,” he said.

The local DepEd office is expecting some 26,000 enrollees for the upcoming school year, Elejorde said.

Meanwhile, public schools here will still be implementing the limited face-to-face classes at the start of the school year on Aug. 22.

Elejorde said they have mapped out a program where learners and teachers are rotated for their inperson schedules for the first few months but hopefully they are able to implement 100 percent face-to-face classroom attendance by November this year.

Teachers train in ICT

Public school teachers from Dumaguete are undergoing training in the business process outsourcing/ Information & Communications Technology industry as the Department of Education here integrates this into the Technology & Livelihood Education (TLE) track for senior high school students.

DepEd Dumaguete Division Schools Supt. Dr. Gregorio Cyrus Elejorde told the media on Tuesday that the Contact Center Services under the TLE will be offered at the opening of this school year in August.

“This has long been overdue and we wanted to start this at the junior high school level but unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic prevented this from happening,” Elejorde said.

The timing is also right because of the current state of BPOs and the ICT industry in Dumaguete and Negros Oriental with more jobs available, he said.

On Monday afternoon, DepEd-Dumaguete officials and Inspiro Relia Inc. Dumaguete inked a memorandum of agreement for the teachers’ training on industry standards to help equip students for employment in that field after graduation.

Suzanne Lu-Bascara, site director of Inspiro Relia Inc.-Dumaguete and president of the ICT Association of Dumaguete & Negros Oriental, said their company designed a training program for these teachers that are aligned with industry standards.

“The DepEd, through Dr. Elejorde approached us before the pandemic to try to get industry training for his Senior High Contact Center teachers. His goal is to make their senior high graduates employment-ready after graduation,” she said.

The teacher-participants were screened, just like how applicants to a BPO are screened, “to identify gaps where we can fill through training,” she added.

They were chosen from all of the city’s seven national high schools and will undergo 20 hours of training for 10 days, starting immediately after the signing of the agreement.

Bascara said Inspiro and the local BPO/ICT association will support DepEd teachers this school year so that by graduation next year, “we can offer employment to graduates who apply and qualify”. (Judy F. Partlow/PNA)

Another shot at unity The Congressmen from Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, and the lone District of Siquijor have filed a Bill seeking to create a separate region for Negros Island and Siquijor.

If this pushes through, we will again have a Negros Island Region that will include Siquijor. We will be known as Region 6-B. And there is a good chance this will happen. President Marcos had, after all, declared his support for the NIR during the campaign period.

Proponents of the NIR-Plus say all the three provinces stand to benefit from the creation of this Region, as we had started to see during the short-lived existence of the NIR from 2015 to 2017.

We all know there are more benefits to unite than to continue to be divided, with Negros Oriental and Siquijor belonging to the Region 7 and Negros Occidental belonging to Region 6. We belong to the same island, and that what concerns one side of the island inevitably becomes a concern of the other.

The management of the CoViD-19 pandemic in the Island is a classic example.

Both provinces were compelled to spend millions of pesos just to manage and maintain border checkpoints to regulate the entry of vehicles and persons from either side of the Provinces, and there were various comments about one side being strict in regulating entry and egress, and the other side being lenient. As a result of having different rules, the spread of the virus just went past through those checkpoints.

Under one Region 6-B, our local governments can improve its approach to peace and order, environment, business, tourism, agriculture, and many other areas.

There is a lot to gain, and hardly anything to lose.

Let’s hope this Bill would give the new Negros Island Region another chance to prove itself.

ast week I turned 72 years young. I find that interesting because at age 52, I was declared dead. That conclusion came from a doctor, not a disappointed lover.

Also last week in Siquijor, I had a sometimes-painful talk with a close friend. Gord raised questions that led me to a startling conclusion.

I’ve unsuccessfully tried to control everything and everybody throughout my life. I’ve attempted the impossible, and in the process created a selfimposed prison. I’m still in shock over the revelation.

I found myself walking aimlessly while shaking my head in discomfort and disgust.

I used say the reason why I never worked as an employee was because I was unwilling to accept BS from anyone.

I was arrogantly proud of that position. It appealed to my sense of manliness, of independence.

While most men followed like sheep, I chose to be free, regardless of the price I was required to pay. I believed I got paid exactly what I was worth because I always worked on a commission or fee basis. If I failed to do business, there

would be no food on the table at home.

I’ve always refused to work with people I didn’t respect. One example was a private equity firm in San Francisco. The partners were absurdly neurotic. While the monthly commissions would have provided much needed income of US $4,000 monthly to support my young family, I unhesitantly walked away.

I have experienced that on several occasions. What did that teach me? I learned to be cautious of judging any outcomes. I’ve belatedly learned to ignore expectations of outcome I felt would be good for me. I simply never know.

But I recently came close to destroying those opportunities.

I never realized why I had so many issues with my lady.

Like me, she’s far from perfect so I’m not going to whitewash aspects of her behavior that are unacceptable to me.

But more importantly, I’ve painfully realized many of the problems came down to cultural differences, and more importantly, her failure to behave as I wanted her to, not as she has done or ever will.

Demands from me to change her behavior landed on deaf ears, while also dooming our relationship to any possibility of survival, let alone prospering.

The arrogance and ignorance of my belief system haunts me. It was only the recent realization of my misguided need to control people and life in general that has allowed me to find a possible solution to our problems.

She’s both unwilling and unable to change. That’s the way she is. Therefore, the only option is for me to change.

And I’ve finally accepted I want to do that.

That’s the key factor, not only needing to, but also wanting to take difficult action to destroy my negative lifetime habits.

I’m now aware of those challenges, and I welcome them. How’s that for an exciting birthday present?

I also remember when my brother Mario Ablong got married -- who was then active in the organization, in the formation and strengthening of BECs in the Cathedral Parish and other parishes in the Diocese – Bishop Lagdameo shouldered all expenses at the Bishop’s Palace with a bonus gift of a bed for the newlyweds.

Then there was my other brother who became a priest, Fr. Ronnie Ablong. Bishop Lagdameo was the one who ordained him and helped him to become what he is now.

Many eulogies and speeches have been and will be delivered extolling his goodness; we know he deserves them. But now at the threshold of eternity, the only eulogy he would hear is the invitation of the Lord of Divine Mercy: “Come, blessed of my Father, enter the kingdom which has been prepared for you.”

We pray for the eternal repose of our beloved Archbishop Angel Lagdameo.

If he were around today, I can almost hear him say what was written in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

few weeks ago, a certain Filipino actress said that “history is like gossip.” Her statement practically stirred debate in social media and even in academic circles.

Many academics, especially those who specialize in History, were appalled by such a statement, as it somehow discredits History as an academic discipline.

Other academics somehow defended the actress’ controversial view, using the post-modernist argument that there is no objective truth in history, and that it merely consists of biased interpretations by historians.

I think it’s a good thing this has become an issue as it demonstrates that Filipinos are fond of showbiz-type balita or any form of controversy they can participate in, even if they are not experts on it.

It goes to show that tsismis (gossip) indeed runs in our blood. It also goes to show how a publicity stunt like this – given that the actress is one of the cast of Maid in Malacañang, an upcoming pro-Marcos version of history directed by Darryl Yap – is and has always been effective in Philippine society.

With the media and social media mileage the actress has thus far received, it seems clear enough what her intent was in making that asinine statement.

Suffice it to say, the issue about history being likened to gossip would inevitably die a natural death; just like all the other issues that surfaced mostly in social media.

Recently however, this actress and Sen. Imee Marcos even made a video about history as tsismis, of course directed by the same director.

he Diocesan Council of the Laity of the Diocese of Dumaguete mourns the passing of a good person, His Excellency Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, who was for nine years and six months the Bishop of our Diocese.

This day is a profoundly sad one, though even in this time of grief I cannot help but reflect on the many wonderful experiences that I – and the rest of the people who personally knew him – shared with Archbishop Lagdameo.

In navigating this loss, it is important for us to remember how much richer our lives have been as a result of our relationship with him.

The Diocesan Council of the Laity is very much indebted to this humble and sincere servant of God. We lost a legend, an ideal and combative speaker of God, and a fearless defender of our Catholic faith.

He was a lot more to many others whose lives he touched and who looked up to him as their hero and model servantleader.

For me, he was a great shepherd who really inspired us with his commitment and integrity.

Archbishop Lagdameo was a firm supporter of renewal movements and communities.

belabored the point that there is nothing wrong in saying that history is like tsismis; the naïve actress even qualified that she did not say that history is tsismis, but that history is like tsismis.

This is now the common go-to justification of Marcos supporters who defend the actress – attempting to use the technicalities of the English language in their defense, and somehow showing the senseless justification that the statement “history is like tsismis” is dissimilar to stating that “history is tsismis”. To them, the statement of the actress is a simile, defined

by Merriam-Webster as a “figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by ‘like’ or ‘as’”.

With this definition, the supporters of the actress then focus on the word UNLIKE, not knowing that they are negating the very definition of a simile, i.e., to COMPARE two unlike things. Hence, there is still a comparison; but what characteristics are they essentially comparing?

Let me ask them: In what aspect do they believe that history, especially as an academic discipline, is like tsismis? Which part of history is like tsismis? Saying history is like tsismis is more or less similar to saying history is tsismis, as it proffers a negative connotation to history as an academic discipline.

On the one hand, History, as an academic discipline, is and will always be based on historical facts and evidences.

Tsismis, on the other hand, is a common past time of unproductive individuals, and is based on opinions and rumors or unverified facts.

In brevity, let me talk more about some terms that one must remember about the study of History. According

to renowned historian Richard Evans, “historical fact is something that happened in the past, which had left traces in documents which could be used by the historian to reconstruct it in the present.”

A historical fact only becomes evidence when theory, interpretation, and analysis come in; evidence, therefore, is basically a historical fact that is used in support a historian’s argument or thesis.

Evans then postulated that: “the historian formulates a thesis, goes looking for evidence, and discovers facts.”

Hence, there are theories, methodologies, and a process that the historian is bound by before he writes history. It is not as simple as others may think – that is even the reason why professional historians are trained in their craft.

Although I must say, and disagree with some historians, that History is not a science per se – it can never be a science since it cannot follow general laws, similar to that of the natural sciences. I would agree with French historian Marc Bloch, however, when he said that history is a craft “…because its practitioners learn on the job how to handle their materials, and wield tools of their trade.”

Renowned Filipino historian Vicente Rafael, author of Contracting Colonialism, in his Facebook post said that “rather than repudiate that claim [of history as gossip] it might be better to excavate it: who’s making this claim, for what purpose, and to whose benefit?”

So, who’s making this claim?

I know nothing about NFT art, but like many things, this is a perfectly good way to begin.

This is, therefore, an attempt at definition, and a scrutiny into what it has meant of late in the wider world, and finally an examination of how far Dumaguete art has taken to the trend, for better or for worse. It will also touch into meditating cats, but I’m getting ahead of my story.

To begin to know what NFT art is all about, one must start with untangling its acronym to its essentials. NFT means “non-fungible token,”

But unless you can have it authenticated as real—and the provenance of that painting welldocumented—your “Picasso” might as well be a painting by your neighborhood artist who has no discernable claim to fame.

If you think about it, the certificate that claims authenticity of a painting seems to have higher value compared to the painting itself.

For what purpose? Mostly to distort history; to make the Marcoses redolent to the Filipino people again, and to make the Filipino people believe that the history written about the Marcoses after EDSA People Power was a one-sided/biased account of what had really transpired in Philippine history.

And to whose benefit? Of course, to the benefit of the victors in the recent election – the Marcoses.

This is why every time a Marcos supporter or a troll quotes Winston Churchill that “history is written by the victors”, or George Santayana that “history is a pack of lies about events that never happened told by people who weren’t there” – I just feel appalled thinking that they are merely quoting famous individuals to justify their political beliefs.

Their sophomoric attempt to understand history – primarily based on social media posts and quotes taken out of context – seem alarming, to say the least.

Say for example, Marcos was not toppled down, or say Hitler was not defeated by the combined Allied Forces

and Stalin’s Red Army, does that mean that history will be good to them as they were the victors? I don’t think so. Had Marcos won, or had Hitler won, historians will always go and look into the sources and there is no doubt that they will find evidences of the crimes that they have committed and they will objectively write about it. Time and again, truth-telling will continue even for the defeated-side as historians would always try to uphold historical truth.

We must always remember that history is written by historians, not necessarily the victors.

Many Marcos loyalists today use the aforesaid apothegm, i.e., “history is written by the victors” as basis to “debunk” the biased historical narratives that came out after the EDSA People Power in 1986. They would invariably say that the historians who were critical against the Marcoses after EDSA were paid by the victors (Aquinos) – thus the victors’ accounts are biased, one-sided, and fake history.

Please do not tell me that since the Marcoses have now become the victors that all of you noisy false experts will just recant your previous “knowledge” on the philosophy of history as influenced by Winston Churchill and George Santayana. Remember always that consistency is the key! You should walk the talk!

Why I finally decided to slow down

F

or people who knew me, or have worked with me back in high school or college, it was no secret that I was doing WAY too many things: I was serious about my academics, active in extracurricular activities, taking leadership positions in various organizations, applying for programs, et cetera, you name it! I was the cookie-cutter version of what some people tag me to be: an ‘achiever’.

And for the most part, the hard work actually paid off: I was introduced to enviable networks of people who inspire me to do big and dream big, I was able to hone and build on my leadership and communication skills, and I was able to arm myself with a few credentials that catapulted me to do what I do now, among others.

But the problem is: I was working TOO HARD. And anything that is not done in moderation always comes with a cost, and that cost for me was getting burnt out in my early 20s.

Ironic, right?

The “twenties” -fresh from college, a time when you are supposed to explore the real world, apply everything you’ve learned in your 15++ years of schooling, put them to good use, hustle real hard, earn big money, hustle some more to achieve your dream, and be at the top of the proverbial career ladder.

I’m sure my friends didn’t feel or think or assume that I had been burnt out because I was always trying to be the life of the party, always engaging with people, being everywhere all at once, manufacturing that image that I was a busy boy.

But my burnout manifested in ways that were deeper than the facade I was maintaining, completely invisible to the eyes of an outsider: -nights where thoughts of my “to-do’s” for the next day kept me awake; -pangs of loneliness when I missed out on important occasions; -paralyzing fears of failure and rejection; -constant blaming of the self for being “behind”

because I was not “working hard enough”; -‘leisure days’ that turned to ‘pressure days’ because my mind would voluntarily wander back to work; - days that felt like weeks, and weeks that felt like months, and months that sometimes felt like a single hour.

I started to equate success with unending hours of productivity. It was deeply rooted. It was hard to get rid of because working hard was second nature.

I was oblivious to the fact that man, by nature, needed rest and restoration.

It was already very, very crippling. Relationships were being compromised, my body started to betray me (when in truth and in fact, I was betraying it), work felt like an awful chore, I started to lose motivation.

And so I began to do what any burnout victim would do and should do, even though it was against the grain of my being: slow down.

Slowing down meant not saying yes to everything; slowing down meant responsibly detaching myself from social media (where all the hustle is projected); slowing down meant choosing dinners with family over a work meeting; slowing down meant Sundays were for Netflix; slowing down meant travelling—to rest and not to work; slowing down meant physically working out; slowing down — in every definition of the phrase you can imagine.

But this is not to say that I slow down to the point that I have lost all my goals and ambitions and motivations, or that I have no more dreams, or that I ran away from all my responsibilities, or that I have negligently shut out everyone around me—no.

That’s not slowing down, that’s being an a--.

I still admittedly work hard and deliver on my work promises, there are days when I work overtime, I still think about the dreams I want to achieve. But I guess what’s different now is: 1) I have learned to understand and find value

in slowing down, more than the value I once found in the hustle culture; 2) I have realized that work is not my life, and life is not just about work; and 3) I have understood what really matters to me the most to live the kind of life I want to live; being overworked and perpetually anxious is not one of them.

This is by no means a criticism on the hustle culture, and I still give my maddest props to those who need to hustle hard to continue to survive and thrive. After all, not everyone can afford to “slow down”, unfortunately.

As for me, I am joyful that I am able to make a conscious decision to invest my time and energy in the things that truly matter to me: my health, my family, my friends, and my cause.

Overall, maybe what’s different now is the realization that in order for me to achieve my dreams, I know that I cannot do it if my physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being are all compromised.

And also: that achieving my dreams isn’t the ONLY end goal. It is not my raison d’etre. It is not the only thing that fuels me to do good, and be good, and live my life. It is not the be-all and end-all.

For me, achieving my dream simply becomes a byproduct of the way that I take care of myself personally, the way I take care of myself professionally, and the way that I take care of my relationships -- because these are the things that truly give meaning to my life.

And while this shift in mindset has changed the way that I have lived my life so far, I still don’t have it all figured out yet. But I know I’m getting there.

And if I don’t, it’s also fine. At least I can sleep peacefully at night without being bothered about the next “big thing” that I’m expected to do.

For all the hard-workers, achievers, change-makers, homemakers, dreamers, and for anybody who’s tired and burnt out, this one is for you. Please, slow down.
