IntheintroductiontohisOrbisPictus,writteninSárospatak, AmosComeniussays:“TheremedyagainstignoranceisKnowledge,whichmustbe pouredintothemindsofstudentsinschools:butinsuchawaythatitistrue,perfect, clearandsoundKnowledge.Thisshallbetrueiftheyneitherteachnorlearnanyother thingbutwhatisusefulforthislife.”

Amarvelouswork,withclearthoughts.Almostthreehundredandfiftyyearshavepassedsinceitspublication,butthefundamentalidearemains.Teachersteach,students study.However,itmattersgreatlywithwhatpreparationanddedicationthisisdone.

Withoutanyunduemodesty,wecanconfidentlystatethatourinstructorsatthe FacultyofArtsandCreativeIndustriesoftheBudapestMetropolitanUniversityfully meettheComenianexpectationsineveryrespect.Aseriesofinternationalandnationalrecognitionstestifytotheirexpertise,whiletheirjointworkwithstudentsreflectsontheircommitmenttosharingtheirknowledge.Thesuccessoftheirstudents’ debutworksshowsthattheseedhasfallenonfertileground.

2025-benhuszonötéves willbetwenty-fiveyearsold;simultaneously,ourFaculty űofArtsandCreativeIndustrieswillbecelebratingitsfifteenthanniversary.Assuch, wehavedecidedtostartthecelebrationsatthebeginningoftheacademicyear 2024/2025withthisalbum,presentingthecreativeworkofourfacultymembers.We haveotherreasonstocelebrate,too.METU,thelargestprivateuniversityinHungary, canbejustlyproudofhavingthelargestfacultyofartsinHungarianhighereducation, withthemoststudentsandthebroadestrangeofartsprograms.Wehavenearly 1,500Hungarianandseveralhundredinternationalstudents.Moreover,weareatthe dawnofanewera,asinspring2024wesignedastrategiccooperationagreement withArizonaStateUniversity(ASU)intheUSA.ASUisrankedamongthetopteninstitutionsofhighereducationintheworld.Itisattheforefrontofinnovation,competingwithprestigiousuniversitiessuchasStanfordandtheMassachusettsInstitute ofTechnology(MIT).Whatisevenmoreimportant:withthisactwehavejoinedthe internationalCintanaEducationalliance,apartnershipthatwehopewillhaveasignificantimpactonthedevelopmentofeducationatMETUoverthecomingmonths. Amongotherthings,ourstudentsmaybeabletoearndualdegreesbystudyingin theUS,ourfacultywillhaveaccesstovaluableteachingmaterials,andtheywillbe abletoparticipateinjointresearchprojectswithASUfaculty.

Itiscustomarytosaythatalongjourneyhasledtothispoint.However,thatwould notbeentirelyaccurate.TheFacultyofArtsandCreativeIndustriesembarkedonits pathaboutadecadeandahalfago.Thiswasthetimethattheownersandfaculty membersoftheBudapestCommunicationandBusinessCollege(BKF),whichalready hadaroundsixthousandstudentsandwasclearlysuccessful,begantoexpressthe needforfurtherdevelopment.Theideagrewstrongerthat,alongsidethetelevision presencethatplaysacriticalroleinmasscommunication,itwouldbeadvantageous tooffertop-tierartistic(film)educationaswell.Thus,afterthesuccessfulaccreditation ofeightBAprograms,theFacultyofArtsandCreativeIndustrieswasestablishedat METUin2010.Sincethen,itseducationalportfoliohasbeencontinuouslyexpanding. Thefollowingyear,threenewprogramswerelaunched,andin2012,thefirstmaster’s programswereintroduced.Thereisnoneedtoillustratethisdynamicdevelopmentin detail;itisenoughtorefertoitscurrentstate.Today,weoffertwenty-eightprograms (15BAand13MA),bothfull-timeandpart-time,inthearts.Thefaculty’seducational rangecoversallappliedartsareasrelatedtothecreativeindustries.Visualanddesign artists,architectsandinteriordesigners,textileandfashiondesigners,filmdirectors, cinematographers,animators,aswellasdesignanalystsandartmanagersstudyand workwithinthewallsofourfaculty.Thisdiversityisverybeneficial,asweliveinanera ofculturalconvergence,withtheboundariesbetweenartformsbeingdismantled andgenrescommonlycrossingover.

However,ourgoaltodayisnotsolelytodrawattentionthroughstatisticaldata. Weonlyprovidebasicfactualinformationaboutourfacultymembers.Thisillustratedalbumwascreatedtoopenwidethefigurativedoorsofouruniversityasan intellectualworkshop,throughbriefbiographicalintroductionsofitsfull-timelecturersandemeritusprofessors,oftenaccompaniedbyinformationabouttheirwork andphilosophies,aswellasreproductionsoftheirdistinctivepieces.Whilethis compilationcanserveasthevisualdocumentationofthedomesticandinternational successes(andrecognition)ofourfaculty,wemostlyofferitasanenjoyablealbum forbothinterestedaudiencesandyoungpeoplefromHungaryandabroadwhoare inclinedtowardappliedarts.Wedothiswiththebeliefthat,inouropinion,Hungarian highereducationisonthebrinkofaturningpoint;alongsidestateandfoundation institutions,Hungarianprivateuniversitieswithinternationalrecognitionwillgainincreasingimportance.ThisiswhereweseethenextsignificantmilestoneinthedevelopmentofMETUandourfaculty.

ÉvaMayerwasborninBratislavaandlivesandworks inŠamorínandBudapest.Shecompletedherstudies in2008attheHungarianAcademyofFineArts,specializingingraphicdesignandvisualartseducation. Since2013,shehasbeeninvolvedinhighereducationinthearts,initiallyasapart-timelectureratthe Moholy-NagyUniversityofArtandDesign,and since2016asafull-timeinstructorattheUniversity ofKaposvár(laterSzentIstvánUniversity,andthen theHungarianUniversityofAgricultureandLifeSciences).From2019to2022,shewasanEnglish-languagepart-timelectureratMcDanielCollegeBudapest.Since2022,shehasbeenafull-timelecturerat BudapestMetropolitanUniversityandtheheadof theMediaDesignBAandMAprograms.Herphotographic,video,andinstallationworkshavebeen displayedatnumerousdomesticandinternational venues,focusingmainlyonissuesofgenderroles andhumanrights.

AxiomX.precisionslingshot.2022 Digitizedbrassandcarbonlaminate. MadeonorderforSimpleShotbasedonNathanMasters’ handmadeslingshot(…) usedreverseengineeringto gettothebasicform,thenimportedthisintoaCAD softwaretocreatetheconfigurabletool.

Cleaverprecisionslingshot(prototype).2023 CNCmachinedaluminum.Thefinalversionwas transformedonthreeaxes.Thankstotheergonomic design,theslingshotofferseasilyrepeatablegripping points,whichhelpswithprecisionshooting.

BarbaraSterkisanartandtechnologyresearcher, interestedinhowdifferentsocialandculturalbelief systemscanbeshapedusingimaginarytechnologies.Sheearnedhermaster’sdegreeinSociologyat theUniversityofPécsandhermaster’sdegreeinDigitalMediaatGoldsmithsCollege,UniversityofLondon.ShereceivedherdoctoratefromtheMoholyNagyUniversityofArtandDesign,wheresheconductedartisticresearchrelatedtotheconceptof workefficiency.Sheworkedasapart-timelecturer atthesameuniversityforthreeyears.Since2022, shehasbeenaseniorlectureratBudapestMetropolitanUniversity,teachinggenerativevisualdesign andphysicalinteraction.Herinteractive,kinetic,and multisensoryinstallationsareexhibitedinHungary andaroundtheworld.Additionally,sheisinterested insomaticpracticesandphysicalimprovisation.

Hegraduatedfromthefive-yeargraphicdesignand artteacherprogramattheVisualAcademyinClujNapocain1993.Subsequently,hestudiedinthe two-yearpaintingprogramattheHungarian AcademyofFineArts,wherehegraduatedin1995. Between1995and1998,hetaughtdrawingandart analysisattheJedlikÁnyosHighSchool.Hethen participatedinpostgraduateprogramsatseveral WesternEuropeanartcollegesanduniversities. ThejointsubmissionbyZDA–ZobokiArchitectureStudio (GáborZobokiDLA,AndrásCsiszér),IntramurosArchitecture Studio(BotondDobosDLA,GáborSzatmári),andRELOAD ArchitectureStudio(PéterCsizmadiDLA,AnikóPetőcz-Tóth) wasselectedamongthebestdesignsandwontheopportunitytodesigntheShenzhenOperaHouseinaninternationalcompetitionforthisculturalfacilityenvisionedin theHongKongBayarea.Named“TheGateoftheSea,” thegrandandfuturisticHungariandesignevokesthemorphologyofShenzhencity,withitsmountainssurrounding thenearlytwenty-million-strongmetropolis,whilealso payinghomagetotheimmortalsofthegenre.

ThisheadquarterswasjointlydesignedbyReloadArchitectureStudio(AnikóPetőcz-Tóth,PéterCsizmadiDLA) andDemeterDesignStudio(NóraDemeterDLA)forthe internationallyrecognizedWürth,aGerman-basedcompanyspecializinginassemblytechnology.Thedesignof boththebuilding’sexteriorandinteriorevolvedhandin hand,withcarefulattentiontotheaestheticneedsofthe usersaswellasthecompany’sbrandingrequirements.

Themuralwascreatedfromtheleftovercuttingscrapsof facadecladdingelements,carefullysortedandprocessedusinganinnovativetechnique.ThebentpiecesofAlcoaReynobondcompositepanelswerefixedtothewallwithconcrete screwsandarrangedlikeapuzzle,formingthecomposition, hencethenameRandom.BálintBachmannwastheleaddesignerforthebuilding.TheprojectreceivedaSpecialAward attheHolcimAwardforSustainableArchitecturein2012.

Between1990and1997,heattendedthepainting programattheHungarianAcademyofFineArts. Afterhisinitialmonochromaticpaintingworks,his interestshiftedtowardsphotographicimagecapture.Inhisearlyworks,hecapturedscenes modeledfromstillframescutoutfromtelevision broadcastsusinghissmallfilmcamera.These scenesincludedaviationandnaturaldisasters (BlackBox,1999),variousnaturalphenomena(Tornado,2001),mysteriouslocations(Site,2000),and deep-seafootage.IntheTimeBombseries(2008), theself-destructivelogicofthechosenthemeand themodelmarkedanendpointinthemodelingof thespectacle.Byrecreatingtheimageandthe spectacle,Szabó,evenatthisearlystage,questionedthemechanismofhowimagesoperateand theircontemporarystatus.From2015,heexpandedhisactivitiestoexaminethenatureofanalog photographicimages.Hisworkshavebeenfeaturedinnumeroussoloandgroupexhibitions.His mostrecentsoloexhibition,Darkroom,washeldin 2018attheHungarianPhotographyMuseum.His workscanbefoundinthecollectionsoftheHungarianNationalGallery,theLudwigMuseumof ContemporaryArt(Budapest),theInstituteofContemporaryArt(Dunaújváros),thePaksGallery,the RómerFlórisMuseumofArtandHistory(Győr),and theHungarianPhotographyMuseum(Kecskemét).

“Thisseriesconsistsofeightpictures,each100×150cm. Theartpiecewasproducedinlimitednumbers.Thematerial,whichcanbeseenasacontinuationofthetradition ofeaselpainting,depictstherelationshipwithbothphotographyand,morebroadly,theimage.Thisrelationship emergesfrom19th-centuryphotographythroughJeff Wall’sworkandreappearsinthe1990s.Theworksfallinto thecategoryofstagedphotography,essentiallyanalog photographsofmodels,aimingtoengagetheviewerin thinkingaboutthephotographicimage.”

DóraTaskovicshasbeenteachinginthePhotographyprogramatBudapestMetropolitanUniversity(METU)since2022.Sheearnedherdegreein VisualCommunicationDesignin2010fromthe PhotographyprogramattheMoholy-NagyUniversityofArtandDesignandbeganherDLAstudiesat theuniversity’sdoctoralschoolin2012.Since2010, shehastaughtatnumerousdomesticinstitutions. Adefiningelementofhereducationalactivityisthe “midwiferyattitude,”thedirectionsandqualitiesof whichshecontinuouslyresearchesanddevelops. Herworkshavebeenfeaturedindomesticandinternationalexhibitionssince2010.

“  DorkaTaskovicsvisitedtheislandcountryin2007.During thefive-weektrip,sheestablishedauniquerule:eachday, shewouldtakejustonephotousingananalogcamerawith aslidefilmprocess.Accordingtotheconcept,theimages couldbetakenatanytimeofday,anywhere,underany circumstances.Asaresult,eachphotocouldeitherbethe resultofalongobservationoraspontaneousmoment. Theculminationofthisdiary-likeworkwasrealizedin alimited-editionbookcreatedasagift.Thepagesofthe bookfeatureshortpersonaltextsthatcanbelinkedtoany oftheimages.Overtime,thediaryexcerptshavetransformedintofragmentedmemories.Intheinstallation,the imagesprintedonrecycledpaperappearasdreamlike, floatingrecollections.”

Hegraduatedin1990fromtheAppliedGraphics programattheHungarianAcademyofFineArts,then continuedhisstudiesattheuniversity’smaster’s programuntil1993.From1993to2006,heworked asaco-creatorwithgraphicartistTamásFelsmann. Duringthistime,heprimarilyfocusedoncorporate identityandpublicationdesign,whilealsocreating illustrations.Since2006,hehasmainlybeendesigningcatalogsandbooks,andisinterestedintheintersectionsbetweenappliedandautonomousart. Hismainresearchareasarethenewformsofvisual communicationinthedigitalage.Since2010,he hasbeenapart-timelecturerattheInstituteofMediaandAppliedArtsattheUniversityofPécs.Since 2018,hehasbeentheprogramdirectoroftheBAin GraphicDesignatBudapestMetropolitanUniversity(METU)andtheheadoftheMAspecialization inTypefaceDesignandTypography.Asof2024,he istheheadoftheMAprogram.Hisworkshave beenfeaturedinnumerousdomesticandinternationalexhibitions.
