Festivals

UPDATE… MUSIC FESTIVALS… AWARDS… Yes, … they’re doing it again! Our terrific band students under the skillful batons of Mr. Rebagliati and Mr. Woodward, have succeeded in upholding the Handsworth tradition of excellence at the recent Spring music festivals. It all began with the Surrey Jazz Festival, Feb. 1 & 2. Despite some very stiff competition, the Senior Jazz Band won second place which was remarkable since they had to play minus their conductor, Mr. Reb, as a result of the teachers’ job

action. The Junior Jazz Band placed third and pianist Darcy Argue won $100 and a trophy for the Best Junior Soloist at the festival. Handsworth’s four concert bands were among the eighty bands competing at the Coquitlam Festival, March 1st. The Junior, the Intermediate “B” and the Senior Concert Bands made fine showings with “Excellent” ratings (Silver Certificates) and Tim Blair, single per-

A very special tribute is due to the head of Handsworth’s Music Department, Mr. Bob Rebagliati, who was honoured by his BC colleagues, February 8, for Excellence, and was presented with the “1991 BC Professional Music Educator Award.” Mr. Reb is the first BC secondary school music teacher to receive this award and we are lucky and very proud to have the top music educator of the year teaching our children!

The highest ranking, the coveted “Superior” (Gold Certificate) was successfully captured by our Intermediate “A” Concert Band who played brilliantly under the masterful direction of Mr. Woodward. At the Tuesday, March 19th Kiwanis Festival the Intermediate “A” Concert Band repeated their effort at the earlier Coquitlam Festival and secured their second top award in this year’s festival season, the difficult to achieve Gold rating. At the same festival, the Senior Concert Band earned a Silver, the highest award given in their category. It is hoped that this achievement will result in them joining

This year’s high placements secure an invitation for our Junior and Senior Jazz Bands and the Intermediate “A” Concert Band to the prestigious National Festival, “Music Fest 91”, to be held in Vancouver in May. On behalf of the Handsworth community we would like to congratulate our award-winning bands and their leaders and all the talented soloists. Congratulations also to the following students who were selected this past February from one thousand BC music students to be on the Provincial Honour Choir: Alison Gerow, Janika Walia; Honour Orchestra: Michelle LaBounty: Honour Band: Mako Sawaguchi.

1991 Intermediate

Band Trip to Victoria

The first set of concerts for the year, Homecoming ’91, was an early season hit! October 23rd and 24th saw over 200 Handsworth musicians put on an impressive and exciting show. A definite crowd pleaser was Mr. Woodward’s whimsical and creative cue cards. He used them with clever dexterity to help the audience identify the various instrumental sections’ “solis” in the Intermediate A’s presentation of Super Solis. On the Junior Evening, the school Orchestra treated the audience by playing everyone’s favourite, the rousing March from Carmen. The Junior Jazz Ensemble charmed us with their lively number, Beale Street Boogie, which featured the talented twins in their band.

IAJE ‘92 As a result of their high placing at MusicFest 91 the

Handsworth Senior Jazz Ensemble was invited to perform at the Miami Convention of IAJE from January 9-12, 1992. There was over 4000 delegates from 20 countries in attendance.

A self-directed 5-member Jazz Combo made their debut on the Senior Evening. They swept the audience off their feet with their rendition of the Miles Davis classic, All Blues.

The Handsworth Music Parents Association wrote and ratified their constitution, and the executive publicized all of the music events of the year, organized nine fundraising events to help increase the size of student accounts, published five newsletters, organized and helped provide set-up

and clean-up, tickets and refreshments for all concerts, organized all but the music for Sweet Music at Christmas, and purchased 22 new blazers for the Senior Concert Band.

During the year, individual recognition was given to Darcy Argue at the Surrey Jazz Festival for Best Junior Soloist. Tim Blair was given special mention as a percussionist at the Coquitlam Festival, and Dave Ryce received a scholarship to the New West Jazz Clinic for his outstanding trumpet playing. Mako Sawaguchi received a scholarship for her flute expertise at the Kiwanis Festival, and was also named to the Provincial Honour Band. Michelle LaBounty was named to the Honour Orchestra, and Allison Gerow and Janika Walia were named to the Honour Choir. Paula G’froerer was selected to perform with the National Youth Concert Band playing the English Horn. She also received a scholarship for oboe at the Kiwanis Festival. Congratulations to all!

The Intermediate Blue Band travelled to Victoria, invited guests of the University of Victoria Wind Ensemble.

1991 Int.Concert Band Trip to Edmonton The end of October saw five of our Handsworth music students taking part in the 1991 UBC Honour Band Festival (Concert Band: Yvonne Passmore, Marco Anglesio, Margo McKenzie and Brad Nichol; Jazz Band: Rob Siklos). These students participated with other top BC high school band students in a weekend of workshops, rehearsals and performances. A special Sunday concert featured the High School Honour Bands playing under the direction of guest conductor, Vernon Read.

Hallowe’en On October 30th, Mr. Reb donned an imposing “mad scientist” costume and Mr. Woodward revived his famous “Phantom” outfit for the Music Hallowe’en Party. The guests included a pair of grapes, a student done up as a gift-wrapped package, and a Mexican Desperado. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments and the funky dance music. The “best” and “tackiest” costume contest provided much entertainment and the great prizes were appreciated. Thanks to our two music Directors for providing a fun party for their music students.

Jazz Festival On November 15th the Junior and Senior Jazz Ensembles participated in a new event to Handsworth – The Abbotsford Jazz Festival. This is a non-competitive learning festival offering an opportunity for our two Jazz Bands to practice performing and to hear other high school Jazz Bands play.

The nomination of Bob Rebagliati for the District Centennial’s Distinguished Citizen Award has been recommended for acceptance by the independent Review Panel. A Certificate presentation ceremony followed by a Reception for recipients of the Award and their invited guests will be held on Saturday, December 7, 1991, at the new Sportsplex Gymnasium at Capilano College, commencing at 2:00pm. Mayor Murray Dykeman will be making the presentations.

Dec. 17 – Sweet Music. Christmas Concert with Dessert, includes 4 concert bands, 2 jazz ensembles, orchestra & val jazz choir. Wide variety of music styles. Event includes baked goods & a raffle. 7pm, Handsworth Secondary School, gym, 1044 Edgewood Rd., N.V.

Homecoming 91 ended on an impressive high note when 16 Handsworth grads returned to join Mr. Reb and the Senior Concert Band in a stirring grand finale, Visions of Flight. The tradition of inviting band alumni from past years to return for the Homecoming Concerts is a wonderful idea. Mr. Reb assures us that it is now possible for a greater effort to be made to get in touch with not only grads, but also staff alumni, for next year’s concerts.

Intermediate A and Junior Jazz students have just returned from a very successful four day trip to Edmonton.

Music Educators Award

Wednesday, March 13, 1991 – North Shore News

BOB REBAGLIATI HONOURED FOR EXCELLENCE

Handsworth teacher honored

North Vancouver music teacher, BOB REBAGLIATI, has been named the 1991 recipient of the British Columbia Music Educators’ PROFESSIONAL MUSIC EDUCATOR AWARD. Bob Rebagliati was honoured at the B.C.M.E.A.’s annual conference held at the Hotel Vancouver this past month. Robert Rankin, Coordinator of Music for North Vancouver School District, made the presentation.

HANDSWORTH SECONDARY music teacher, Bob Rebagliati, has been named the winner of the 1991 Professional Music Educator Award. Rebagliati, head of Handsworth’s Music Department, is the first secondary school teacher in BC to win the award. The BC Music Educators’ award is presented to a music teacher who goes beyond the call of duty in demonstrating his or her dedication and commitment to music education both inside and outside the classroom. Rebagliati’s music program, developed over the past 15 years, attracts about one-third of the Handsworth student population. Handsworth bands, both concert and jazz, have consistently been among the top three in BC at various music festivals. In additional, they have won the cherished first place gold at the Canadian Nationals several times. Rebagliati has worked throughout Western Canada as a music adjudicator, lecturer and workshop leader. Over the past 10 years, he has directed and led BC music camps. Rebagliati is also a partner and teacher at the highly respected New West Jazz Clinic held each August in Vancouver and Victoria. At the conference, West Vancouver’s Lloyd Slind was honored as the BCMEA founding member. Slind founded the BC Music Educator’s Association in 1957 and was the organization’s president from 1958-59. He is a retired music professor with the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. He was also a founding member of the Canadian Music Educator’s Association.

1991

Rebagliati has been responsible for the music program at Handsworth Secondary School in North Vancouver for the past fifteen years. In that time his vision of a comprehensive music program of quality has been realized in a number of ways. He has given equal priority to the three major components of a music program: strings, choral and band. He has brought together a complementary team of specialists to team teach both at the feeder elementary schools and at Handsworth where brass, woodwind, percussion and strings are all taught by specialists. He has taken full advantage of Handsworth’s flexible modular schedule to provide instruction at four levels of program in multi grade groupings and in both full ensemble and sectional formats. He believes that history, theory and listening skills should be taught and tested as frequently as performing skills.

“quest for excellence” has been borne out in the numerous awards his performing groups have won: Handsworth Concert and Jazz Bands have consistently been in the top three in BC and on a half dozen occasions have been tops in Canada! Bob has made many valuable contributions to his colleagues and students at the district, provincial, and national levels serving as president of the North Vancouver Music Educators’ Association, representing jazz educators on the B.C.M.E.A. executive, heading up the staff at North Vancouver’s Summer Band Camp for over 10 years and as a staff member of the New West Jazz Clinic each August. He has given numerous lectures at UBC for music education students, provided workshops around BC and Saskatchewan and adjudicated at Regional MusicFest competitions in Edmonton and Saskatchewan. Without a doubt, Bob is a professional in every sense of the word.

Rebagliati’s music program attracts about one-third of the Handsworth student population. He has created a genuine source of pride for the Handsworth community which solidly supports his series of five concerts each year and helps to raise funds for annual tours. His

The BC Music Educators’ Association has a current membership of approximately 1,000 music educators from around the province. Their objectives are to advocate music education, to support the goals of a comprehensive quality education under the umbrella of the BC Teachers’ Federation and to promote excellent of music instruction in every BC school. The B.C.M.E.A. president, Leanne Roy, said the purpose of the award is “to acknowledge a classroom teacher for notable achievement in professional development activities in their district as well as program and curriculum development activities in music.” Professional Music Educator Award Bob Rebagliati B.C.M.E.A. 1991 Wednesday, March 13, 1991 – North Shore News spotlight NOW Former Handsworth student returns home for recital EVELYN HACOB spotlight feature TAKING IN a classical music concert on a Sunday morning after an intoxicating evening is asking for trouble. My fiancé – not a morning kind of guy anyway – had difficulties this particular day: even a hefty nudge couldn’t arouse him from the semi-conscious state brought on by the soothing sounds of Chopin’s Barcarolle, Op. 60 and Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin. But the last piece on the Vancouver Playhouse Sunday Coffee Concert program shook him up like a 1,000-milligram jolt of caffeine. Katja Cerovsek, the 21-year-old piano virtuoso and sister of violin prodigy Corey Cerovsek, was banging out Balakirev’s Islamey – a work that was considered technically impossible to play when it was first written. She sailed through the piece’s enormously difficult scherzo – her long, white fingers stabbing out chord clusters – capturing its exoticism brilliantly. The following day we met in the Shaughnessy home of Festival Concert Society president, J.J. Johannsen, who invited Cerovsek to play in Vancouver from her home in Bloomington, Indiana. Down-to-earth, with a guileless, bubbly warmth, Cerovsek looks like your average teenager dressed in denim jeans and a loose cable-knit sweater. Performing before hundreds is serious business, but she manages to bring to it a sense of ease, and, especially, humor. “I guess we’re freaks,” she says half-jokingly when asked to explain how an un-musical family produced not

1991

Katja Cerovsek She started tinkering on the family piano almost before she knew how to tie her shoe and, by age 10, had made her professional debut with the Calgary Philharmonic. Since “getting serious about piano at age 15” (prior to that she considered it just a hobby, even though she’d graduated at age 13 from the Royal Conservatory of Music with a diploma in Piano Performance and the coveted Gold Medal for the highest mark in Canada), Cerovsek has appeared as soloist with dozens of orchestras. She’s given recitals in Canada, the US and Europe and performed for national radio and TV. A few years back she and Corey made a guest appearance on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show. “Yeah, I got to play for him (Corey),” she sighs with

listening to her that the event wasn’t a happy one. “I just tagged along. I didn’t want to leave my friends or Vancouver. To me, Bloomington was just cornfields and cows.” In just a short time, however, she found a piano teacher and fell into a steady routine. She also managed to complete her Grade 12 education through correspondence courses, and, just one month later, graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree. While her parents have always provided her with a great deal of emotional support, Cerovsek is proud that she hasn’t had to rely on them for financial support. Apart from a Canada Council grant, she’s paid

mock envy and then laughs. “It was a great experience. We actually did get to see Johnny for a few minutes after the show – my mom was right in there with her camera. But then he ran off with all five of his bodyguards.”

her entire way through university on the money she earns from recitals.

Contrary to what some might think, playing with Corey is something his sister likes to do. “We seem to do it so naturally together,” she says. “I think we’ve got the same musical ideas – we breathe the same way with phrasing. Our interpretations are never very far off.” You’re probably wondering by now how two child prodigies living in North Vancouver ended up in Bloomington. The story goes like this: In 1984, Helmut and Sophie Cerovsek packed the family and U-Haul off to the US after Corey, then 11, became the youngest person ever to be accepted full-time into Indiana University. Katja was 14. The move meant leaving behind close friends and fellow students at Handsworth Secondary School. It’s clear from

With a master’s degree under her arm (which, by the way, she earned with a perfect 4.0 grade point average), Cerovsek is now completing her PhD from Indiana University under the watchful eye of the Beaux Arts Trio’s Menahem Pressler, who she considers to be a “fantastic musician who makes you believe in yourself.” Her regime is rigorous: three to six hours of practicing a day in addition to classes, which leaves little time for performing. “Life is pretty normal right now,” she

says, “A lot of people think it’s glamorous, but it’s not.” At this point Cerovsek isn’t sure where she’s going to finish her PhD. But one thing’s for sure: it won’t be at a music conservatory. “I’m not Julliard-oriented. I don’t want to be in an incredibly competitive environment,” she says. But what is it like being the “under-achiever” of the family? (At age 14 Corey was one of the most sought-after violinists in the world and by age 18 had already obtained his PhD in music and mathematics). As is characteristic of Katja

Cerovsek, the response is both intelligent and lighthearted. “It might have bothered me a bit when we were kids, but I realized there’s no sense in competing – besides, we play different instruments. Corey is so far ahead of everyone, anyway. He’s matured a lot in the last year, and now we’re good friends.” AFTER LEAVING her North Vancouver home and friends at Handsworth Secondary seven years ago, 21-year-old Katja Cerovsek has settled nicely into life in Bloomington, Indiana. She was in town recently to give a stunning piano recital at the Vancouver Playhouse.

Orchestra Mystery Tour

PARENT VOLUNTEER

It remains to be seen exactly how much of a mystery the tour was, but the orchestra’s one-day, three-city tour, was a great success.

On May 29, Mrs. Cousins and the following students from her foods classes prepared an exquisite luncheon for our parent volunteers. We extend our appreciation to Jodi Collen, Geoff Dawson, Jo-ann Fry, Lisa Hutchinson, Kevin Milos, Owen Baldry, Yasmin Chehrzad, Chelsea Deane, Brooke Johnson, and Cindy Koebernick, and of course, Mrs. Cousins, for their contribution. We also would like to thank again our parent volunteers who offer so generously of their time to assist us in the operation of the school. We are most appreciative of your support: “it would be difficult to do it all without you.”

Members of the orchestra met at Handsworth at 8:00am on Friday, May 3rd for donuts and juice before boarding the bus for a short trip to Cleveland Elementary School. The orchestra and string ensemble played a concert for over half of the Cleveland student body. Our second stop was at Prospect Point in Stanley Park for a group photo and a breath of fresh air. Next stop was the Granville Island Public Market for a 35 minute concert in the courtyard. Congratulations to all players for two well done performances.

Have a wonderful summer … and we hope to see you in September! YEAR-END MUSIC AWARDS

After a short lunch and gravol break, everyone hiked over to the Cooper Boating Centre for a leisurely, 3 hour sailing lesson on English Bay. The weather cooperated magnificently with lots of sun and plenty of wind. Then on to the Burnaby Keg for dinner and recuperation from an afternoon of sea air. Then we experienced some unique bowling styles (backwards!) at Brentwood Lanes. Gift certificates were awarded to Bernice Li for highest score and to Betty Ling for not-highest score. The tour bus returned to Handsworth at 9:00pm to wrap up the day’s activities. My thanks to all students for their good performances and cooperation throughout the day. Thanks as well to the parents for helping to keep it as much of a mystery as possible. A good time was had by all!

1992 Concerts January A most delightful evening of musical entertainment was the Small Ensemble Evening held at the Edgewood Road Theatre. The groups were as varied as the ages of the performers. The enthusiasm of the many beginning elementary band students matched the obvious pleasure of the more “seasoned” veterans and music staff, who performed with much gusto.

A personal thank you to all the individuals who expressed their appreciation for the Orchestra performance at the May Revue concert on May 26. The members of the Orchestra certainly deserve the praise they received. See you in September … after a good summer. Mr. Vic Wiens

February – March February brought us the Junior Night of Music held at the school and the eighth Sound Spectacular Concert held at the Centennial Theatre. Mr. Bob Rankin was the Concert’s M.C., while our very talented guest artist was Mr. Brian G’froerer, a VSO. French horn musician. Mr. Don Murray was our guest conductor, who led the Senior Concert Band in a wonderful rendition of the “Pines of the Appian Way”. Those who missed the concert were able to catch it courtesy of Shaw Cable at a lter date. A new Music Listening Centre was set up for our students in the back room of the school library. This was made possible through very generous parent donations. The Senior Concert Band, as well as five individual students (Rob Calder, Paula G’froerer, Derek Lee, Stacey Taylor and Margo McKenzie). They were chosen to participate in the Provincial Honour Band and perform at the BC Music Educator’s Conference held at the Vancouver Hotel in February.

1992

Junior Blue and Junior Gold will both be two year bands, except for some who will go forward into Intermediate Band. Intermediate Band will be a two year situation (grade 9/10) while Senior Concert Band will remain a grade 11/12 group.

One of the students’ favourite concerts Just Jazz held at the Blue Note Jazz Cellar was a huge success. The returning alumni Jazz Band brought back fond memories and old friends. A popular item was the faculty duo (Mssrs. Reb and Woodward)

The final music concerts, May 26 and 27, proved to be most exciting and entertaining season finales – especially with Robin Hood dropping in to conduct his merry men and women in the Intermediate “A” Band. Intermediate “B” will perform at Edgemont Village Days, Saturday afternoon June 13. The final music performance will be the Intermediate A Band who will play the evening of June 24 that the graduation ceremony.

Homecoming ’92 concerts held October 20th and 21st. Mr. Woodward’s impersonation of “The Beast” (or was it the Beauty?!!) while leading the Intermediate Band through the theme song to “Beauty and the Beast” was a definite highlight,

Handsworth’s first concerts of the season are to be held Tuesday, October 20th, the Junior Evening, and Wednesday, October 21st, the Senior Evening. We are looking forward to another exhilarating music season here at Handsworth. The Homecoming ’92 concerts promise to be exciting and entertaining, and will feature the return of Handsworth’s graduates to join the Senior Concert Band during their set. A big thanks to all the 1991-92 Music Parents Association members and students who have put so much of their hearts into our music program. You have the satisfaction of knowing you have sustained one of the best music programs offered anywhere.

“SWEET MUSIC” – “THE CHRISTMAS DESSERT CONCERT” is to be held Tuesday, December 15, at 7:00pm in the school gym. This annual concert features all our music groups performing in the same evening.

1992 Festivals In March, the North Shore News printed an article publicizing: “Handsworth Jazz Ensembles Score Hat Tricks at Local Music Festivals”. Our two Jazz Ensembles and our Senior Jazz Combo plus our four concerts competed at the Kiwanis, Coquitlam, New West and the Pacific Basin Band Festivals. Two Handsworth students, Pat Gibbs and Darcy Argue, received awards for excellence at the Kiwanis Jazz Festival. Both the Senior and Junior Ensembles plus the Senior Jazz Combo were awarded gold medals at the Kiwanis and the New West Jazz Festivals. Our Concert Bands achieved excellent ratings as well. The Intermediate A Band led by Mr. Woodward received a gold and the Senior Concert Band captured a silver at the Coquitlam Concert Band Fest. The Kiwanis Concert Band Festival results were the following: Junior Concert Band: Gold, Intermediate B: Bronze, Intermediate A: Silver, Senior Concert Band: Gold.

The music staff at Handsworth are very pleased with the progress of all the groups, both musically and socially this year. The hard work and achievement was evident in the strong performances at the May Revue Concerts. In addition, in concert band, more students than ever before are continuing on for another year. Congratulations on a fine year! Mr. Reb Senior Concert Band Retreat Weekend At noon on October the second, the senior concert band gathered at the band room in preparation for the upcoming weekend we were to spend away from the comfort and luxury of our homes.

The Music Hallowe’en Party Another fun-filled musical tradtionl was the annual music students’ Hallowe’en Party held October 29th. Outrageous costumes, funky music, lots of munchies and various prizes added to the gaiety of the evening. Rumours have it that Mr. Reb couldn’t help

Hats Off to the Pit Orchestra- Thanks to our two Music Directors, Mr. Rebagliati and Mr. Woodward, and their hard-working music students who make up the pit orchestra for Handsworth’s musical, “Annie”. The pit orchestra will play over 25 pieces from Annie’s musical score adding technical and musical finesse to the 4 performances to be held at the Centennial Theatre, November 25th – 28th.

UBC Honour Band Festival Congratulations to four of our Handsworth music students who have been selected to participate in the 1992 UBC Honour Band Festival to be held at UBC, October 30 to November 1. Concert Band, Paula G’froerer Oboe, Stacey Taylor, Flute, Danielle Stephens, French Horn Jazz Band: Darcy Argue, Piano / Keyboard

The UBC Honour Band program involves top music students who are selected from over 65 BC high schools. It is an intensive but rewarding weekend which involves various workshops, guest performances, rehearsals, and miniconcerts. (Participants are invited to a Halloween Party on Saturday night, as well.) A special Sunday concert features the High School Honour Bands playing continued below

The parents are proud to have such a fine music program at Handsworth, proud that this quality music education has become such a highly respected and integral part of our children’s schooling, fondly looked on as a Handsworth tradition. The high quality is no accident. It’s the result of a lot of hard work and incredible dedication on the part of the music staff. Thank you to Mr. Reb, Mr. Woodward and Mr. Wiens for a very successful and worthwhile year.

1992 Honolulu Trip The crunch of 92! While the band was away in Honolulu enjoying themselves along came the crunch of ‘92 (cancellation of music programs). It was the result of a change in the funding formula. North Van funded its programs with the support of the community. The Board would present a budget and it would be larger than some formula would say it should be. The voters would vote whether to pay the difference. Because they wanted a strong music program they paid the difference. There were outdoor schools, a broad elementary program with band and strings etc. When the funding formula was changed the district no longer had the freedom to have the community cover the difference. Instead funds were allocated by a formula called ‘equalization.’ The term

A special feature of this festival is its international flavour. Besides Canada, there will be bands from such countries as Australia, Hong Kong, U.S.A., Singapore, Japan, Guam, New Zealand and Tonga. Extra rehearsalss will be a must for this festival. This festival is a wonderful opportunity for Handsworth’s seniors.

March ended with a most enjoyable and rewarding senior tour to Hawaii where the Senior Concert Band won a gold medal for Handsworth and Canada. New international friendships developed as students were exposed to various cultures around the Pacific Rim.

‘Lighthouse Districts’ came about. They had more progressive school boards. Some people ran for the board just to cut programs. Their mantra was ‘cut taxes.’ Handsworth’s elementary participation in ’92 was at 96%. District wide it was 72%. This was Bob Rankin’s plea to save the band programs in North Vancouver. It worked and the band programs were saved but they cut the position of District Supervisor. Bob’s focus was saving the program and he is not sure when it became evident to him that it probably meant they would cut something and his position was all that remained. Every district was different. Some supervisor positions had already been cut by ’92 and others were cut afterwards.

1992 Elementary Band & Strings Program May 11, 1992 Dear Secondary School Band and Strings Parents, I am sure you know that the North Vancouver band and strings program at the elementary level has been cut from the school district budget. What does this mean to parents of secondary school band and strings students? It means the end of the band and strings program that has been such a vital part of your students’ elementary school experience, has carried on into secondary school and will continue to be an enriching lifetime skill. Without band and strings at the elementary level, the program will shrivel because teenagers don’t enrol in beginning music programs – their involvement must begin much earlier. It means that, within one year, the quality of North Vancouver’s junior bands will deteriorate. That lowered level of achievement will flow upward into our secondary schools’ band and strings programs. And, within five years, today’s tradition of award-winning music excellence will be nothing but a memory. In the mid-1980s band and strings music parents faced a similar funding crisis and decided to apply a parent-initiated program fee to keep the music playing. Your child has now benefitted from the sacrifices made by those parents. It is now our turn to put something back into the program. We have one last chance to save the elementary band and strings program. You recently received a letter from the North Vancouver Band and Strings Parents’ Association asking you to donate a one-yearonly parent-initiated program contribution of $175 to save the program. If you haven’t responded yet, please do so as soon as you can.

1992

In order for this emergency funding program to succeed, we need 100%participation from parents of secondary school band and strings students. We know that it is a lofty goal, but we also know that you realize just how important a role music plays in the lives of our young people. And we are confident you will write a

Please remember that the parents involved in the North Vancouver Band and Strings Parents Association do not support program fees as a means of financing out public education system. But we realize that if the elementary program is cut off completely, it will take a very long time to rebuild it – meanwhile, thousands of students will miss out on an im-

cheque to keep the music alive in North Vancouver’s elementary schools. Your neighbours who are involved in the Parents’ Association include lawyers who have been working hard over the past few weeks to ensure that your $175 donation is tax deductible. In fact, those legal volunteers have assured us there is every reason to be confident that the Association will achieve charitable status. With your donation being tax deductible, you will actually be paying approximately $98 (after the tax deduction). Of your $175 donation, $20 goes to a financial assistance program and $155 to paying for keeping the band and strings program alive for one year. That works out to about $2 per music class per student – a very good deal when you consider that private music lessons cost around $14 per half-hour.

portant lifetime education experience. (Last year, 70% of grade five students were in the band and strings program.) We must keep the music alive for the year it will take us to go about getting it restored to the curriculum permanently. An after tax payment of $98 to keep the music playing. That’s what is being asked. And your donation is needed urgently! There is a May 15 deadline on saving the program. Please make your cheque payable to the North Vancouver Band and Strings Parents’ Association and deliver it to the box in the office at your child’s school – tomorrow! Please don’t discard this letter without giving serious thought to what will be lost if you don’t participate – and the lifetime opportunities you will be given with your contribution. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Best regards, Jim Stephenson

1992 Fundraising $ Student Accounts $ Individual student accounts are established for every student in the music program at Handsworth by the Treasurer of MPAC as an incentive to become involved in fundraising projects, and to be fairer to those who put in extra effort. The main purpose of this unique feature is to cover all or part of the fixed expenses of any music tour. Funds may also be designated by a student to cover all or part of his/her cost of a music group activity (e.g. festival fees). A student may also request “up to” an amount estimated by MPAC and Mr. Rebagliati to be appropriate for other travel costs (e.g. food and side trips). It is not to be used for shopping trips. Funds are accumulated by each student as a result of his/her participation in MPAC organized fundraising activities, and remain in that student’s account while he/she remains in the program. When leaving the program, remaining funds may be transferred to a sibling’s account by request only. All other funds remaining in a student’s account after that student leaves the program, revert to general funds to be used by MPAC in other areas of the music program. Funds may be commandeered from a student’s account if that student has outstanding amounts owing to the music program (e.g. lost uniform pieces for which he/she has not reimbursed the program, NSF cheques, etc.). Music Program Fund Raising for 1992/93

1992

Student Accounts: Student fund-raising is a Music Parents Advisory Committee (MPAC) sponsored activity designed to help students subsidize their tour costs by accumulating money in individual accounts through MPAC conducted projects. Individual accounts means that the students benefit according to the effort they put into fund-raising. These accounts are not personal bank accounts for personal fees or spending but are intended to assist with travel costs. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the MPAC executive. Funds remaining when a student leaves the music program will be transferred to a sibling’s account or revert to general funds to benefit the music program as a whole. Information for each activity is presented in the band classes and information / order sheets are available in the band room. Money must be handled by cheques made out to MPAC as the volunteers running the various projects cannot be responsible for cash. The dates for each fund-raising event are clearly stated on the covering letter and reminders are posted on the board room door. Contact people for information are Ginny Dournovo, 988-9796 (not available Sept. 26 to Oct. 19) and Uldeane Fountain, 985-3683, and Mr. Rebagliati in the music office.

Current and Upcoming Projects: Entertainment ’93 and Savings Spree – September / Early October Information has been distributed through the music room during the first two weeks of classes. Samples of the books and order forms are in the music room. The cost of Entertainment ’93 is $43 which includes GST. The profit is $8 and the books have been available for distribution since Sept. 21. For the first time, the coupons become available immediately. Saving Spree is a smaller coupon book that sells for $12 including GST with a $3.50 profit. We plan to complete the sale by Monday, October 19 (as long as books are available). Magazines – End September Information has been distributed through classes and at the general meeting. The magazine drive will be completed on the last week of September. The profit is 1/3 the value of the subscription, and all special offers of so many magazines for so much money (attach proof of the offer) will be honoured on magazines handled by Quality Service Programs. Help is needed for this event and it would only entail 1 or 2 hours on one or two mornings to record orders. Orders can be handed into the music room at the times stated: Tuesday, Sept. 29 (2:30 – 3:30pm) and the last chance to hand in orders is Wednesday, Sept. 30 (8:30 – 9:30am). NO LATE ORDERS.

Gift Wrap Program – End September / Early October New to the Handsworth Music Students is the excellent program by Stanbridge Enterprises which provides aneconomical way to purchase gift wrap for all occasions. Students earn 40% on all sales. A $10 roll of wrap nets $4 for your account! Samples of the quality paper, gift tags, ribbon and gift bags will be on display in the music room. Distribution to classes started Sept. 21 and 22 and all order must be received by 3:10 on Thursday, Oct. 8 … no exceptions! The delivery date will be early November. Meat and Chicken Fund-Raising – End October / Early November We have arranged this with Towne and Country distributions for the second half of October with the orders being distributed the first week of November. Ralph, at Towne and Country, has agreed to give us 20% on almost all items being offered this year instead of 15% (only 5 items are at the 10% profit, whole chickens being one of the items). Again, information will be sent home. Cookie Caper – November Buckets of cookie dough – 11lbs worth for $23 - $5 goes to each student’s account. There are 4 fabulous flavours – once you taste it – you’ll love it! Each bucket makes over 200 cookies. Made from all natural ingredients! If this goes well in the fall, we will offer it again at least once in the spring.

Grocery Certificates The order forms and information will go out mid-November with planned distribution early December so people can use the certificates for their entertainment shopping. For 3 years, the Super Valu chain has given us 8% with the Edgemont Village store adding 2%, earning us 10% on our money. The order took about 3 days to fill and the service was excellent. Grocery Tapes and Penny Drive We have been collecting grocery tapes from Super Valu and in exchange for $5,000 worth of tapes, we receive a $20 certificate which is sold with proceeds going into the general account. Pennies are collected at the concerts and through the music office to go into the general funds which benefits the whole Music Program.

BC Music Raffle – February Chocolate Coated Almonds – usually planned for February or March Not planned this school year unless we have parent volunteer(s) willing to coordinate.

Poinsettias – Orders Early November / Early December Delivery This is planned for November with information distributed with our newsletter and in class. Orders are collected about the middle of November with the distribution early December. There is a $4 profit on the small plants and $5 on the larger ones. The larger plants will cost a bit more this year. Mary Ross will run this again. RIGHT: Blue Note Cafe at the Just Jazz Concert

The judges give their official nod which signals the festival’s emcee to begin his introduction. The audience hears the name “Handsworth Secondary” and

then it is repeated a second time as the various adjudicators talk low into their tape recorders. The stage lights glare out at us while the big black amps hum in a low-pitched hum. Tension and eager anticipation mount. Our conductor stands motionless, like a pillar of strength, in front of his young musicians. His experienced eye scans over each student’s face, registering their signs of readiness. All eyes are riveted on his baton, which he holds up high in front of them. Suddenly, with great enthusiasm the baton sweeps into movement bringing forth a deluge of exciting and dynamic sound. The band’s music dances off the walls and ceiling and into the crowd where it energizes all of us. A strange feeling overtakes the parents as they sit there in the dark, experiencing first hand their children’s impressive accomplishments. How can kids so young play so well? How can so many varied individuals, with such a wide range of interests and capabilities, perform so magically that they are transformed into a single, cohesive, well disciplined unit? Making this music together is allowing them to communicate to one another and the audience on a higher plane, in a universal language, free of limits such as words. How lucky they are to be part of this. Even before they play their final notes, a look of accomplishment and pride can be seen in their eyes. Then it hits us! This musical experience is forcing our kids to grow … and it’s happening now, right before our eyes. Up there, on centre stage their lives are being enriched and their souls are being fed. The funny thing about youth is … they probably don’t even realize it. Not until they are in middle age and they find themselves sitting in the dark, as part of the audience … remembering their youth and the time they were up there, center stage! Contributed by: Nancy Argue

Paula G’froerer was awarded by the COQUITLAM MUSIC FESTIVAL a $200 music scholarship from the PACIFIC COAST MUSIC FESTIVALS ASSOCATION. Paula was the unanimous choice of all the adjudicators for her “technically superb and artistically sensitive” oboe and English horn work with the Handsworth Senior Concert Band.

BOB RANKIN (UPDATE) After the crunch of ‘92, Bob accepted a Vice Principal-ship at an elementary school and taught a grade 6 class as well. After spending 17 years working with all the principals in the district he now found himself working under one. When he finally retired Bob Rebagliati ask him to sub with his band. He had to go down to the board office and apply. This was 2002. He used to know everyone in the board but 10 years later he knew no one. He thought he was going to be asked for a criminal record. He was 57 when he retired. Today retired teachers cannot sub but they could in 2002. Bob enjoyed getting back in the classroom and once the kids found out he knew what he was doing he was accepted as a superstar. It was great! He recalls subbing in a stage band once. One trumpet player was really doddering. “Let’s go!” Bob said and got little response. Finally he said, “Okay, look, I am going to give everything I have and how about if you do the same. If you do not want to then you should pack up your trumpet and leave.” The young fellow packed up his trumpet and left. Once he was out of the room the rest of the kids all gave a big bronx cheer! They wanted him gone as well. On another occasion he subbed in a choir. They didn’t have a piano player to accompany them so Bob played. They all wanted him to come back. As a VP in an elementary school he took on many roles. Once two grade one and two students came up and hugged him below the knee. He used the opportunity to engage them in a conversation which worked out just fine. There was one girl one time that was from Eastern Europe and she had bruise marks on her arm. There was an incident where she got into a fight with another girl. Bob said she should explain what had happened to her parents.” She said, “Don’t call my parents.” After he retired he subbed at a school where she was a student several years later. She was now about 15. She was late for choir and when she came in she saw Bob and went over and hugged him. She remembered him from elementary school even though he didn’t recognize her. He had almost forgotten about all the wonderful connections you make as a teacher!

Tough standards must be achieved before a student is considered for nomination for a music award. The 1992-93 music award winners follow.

1993 Band & Strings Parents Ass. Elementary Band & Strings Programs - Update The School District 44 Band & Strings Parents Association was formed last year to raise the funds and support needed to maintain a band and strings program in elementary schools in our district in the face of budgetary cutbacks. This group worked extremely hard and received strong support and commitment from the community. Handsworth parents, no doubt recognizing that high school music programs depend on healthy elementary programs, responded generously. The commitment of the Association was to provide needed funding for the 92/93 year only, in the hope that the School District and the Education Ministry would see the importance of maintaining these programs and be in a position to do so

Giant Band Rally On Friday, February 12 at 6:30 pm at the Lonsdale Quay, a mass elementary school band rally will take place. The Handsworth Junior Jazz Band as well as a band of approximately 150 elementary band students will perform for the public and be conducted by Mr. Bob Rebagliati. The concert is to create public awareness, and to remind parents and the community that if the elementary school band program, that has been such a positive influence on our children, is to have a future in our schools we must get out and show strong support for the continuation of this beneficial program. The future of our kids’ well-balanced education and the fostering of the arts in our community depends upon it. Nancy Argue

by next year. To fulfill this commitment the Association has to raise an additional $30,000 and have decided to organize an exciting raffle. Prizes will be a baby grand piano from Young Chang Canada and Ward Music, 7 days for 2 in Mazatlan from Canadian Holidays and New world Discovery Programs, a Yamaha Mini component stereo system from Yamaha Canada, and a $500 gift certificate from Northwest Music. Tickets are $5 each and will be available through the elementary schools, at local shopping malls and possibly at upcoming Handsworth concerts. Please support this fundraising endeavour, but equally importantly, show your support for this district’s valuable and effective band and strings programs by attending the rally described in the previous item, and by contacting School Trustees, your MLA and other provincial politicians. The elementary programs remain in jeopardy and if they are cancelled, the size and quality of the secondary programs will suffer dramatically. Peter: When I started at Handsworth there was a small group of grades 8s through 12 in one string class on timetable who had various levels of proficiency. To give the more advanced kids an opportunity to progress and to build the program, the following year I started the North Shore Youth Orchestra in the evening (extracurricular). I invited the most advanced students to join and brought in others from around North and West Vancouver. After a year, a second level was added followed by a third. After its fourth year in operation, I had enough of a support structure at the high school that the Handsworth String

program grew to three levels: Junior, Intermediate and advanced Chamber Orchestra and all on the timetable. I was also able to secure the string teaching position in the feeder schools which helped with increasing the enrollment in Strings. Chris Best: What is your background? Peter: I came from a musical family and was given lessons on the piano and the violin at an early age. This led me into music education as a career. Growing up

in Michigan, I graduated high school in 1968. The conductor of the orchestra at the college which I attended taught violin and since I took lessons from him, I also played in the college orchestra while still in high school. April 23 – May 1, the Senior Concert Band and the Senior Jazz Ensemble travelled to Southern California for the senior trip. San Francisco was our first stop and we spent two nights in the Villa Florence. Performing at Pier 39 was enjoyable despite the wind factor. Everyone enjoyed our time in Berkeley where we record shopped. We had a long day in Pittsburg (CA) of performing and clinics. We met our homestay hosts and they had a little party for us after the evening concert. The next high school was Independence High School. We played a couple of pieces for them in their band class. While our hosts were in class, we visited San Jose State University to watch a music class using old-style instruments. The time we spent with homestay hosts gave us valuable insight into the lives of Californian students.

SENIOR BAND’S PERFORMANCE TOUR The Senior Concert Band and Senior Jazz Band will travel to San Francisco and Los Angeles April 23 to May 1. A definite highlight will be the Senior Concert Band’s performance in a Disneyland studio.

En route to Los Angeles we stopped for an interesting tour of Hearst Castle at San Simeon.

February 10 - SOUND SPECTACULAR Upon our arrival in LA, we checked into the Jolly Roger Hotel. The next morning we went behind the scenes at Disneyland and played original Disney music. We all agreed that this was the highlight of the trip. Disneyland and Universal Studios took up the remaining 3 days. We ended our trip with a great Mexican dinner and a visit to Venice Beach. Bye, Bye Birdie! Bye Bye Birdie’s Pit Orchestra

Fundraising Report This year, the music students handled the first of their fundraisers on their own. With minimal adult supervision they processed the orders, distributed the books and consequently realized a significant feeling of achievement.

We recognize the professional skills, hard work and talent demonstrated by the musical’s Pit Orchestra. The Pit Orchestra is made up of volunteer music students and directed by our two dedicated band leaders, Mr. Rebagliati and Mr. Woodward. These students have practiced many long hours to learn Bye Bye Birdie’s musical score.

Our bands sold $10,400 worth of Entertainment books and $1220 worth of Gold C books. This sale netted $2,325 which was divided into individual students’ music accounts. This fundraiser brought in slightly more to the accounts than it did last year. Congratulations to all music group executive members for

inspiring your classmates to do so well. The gift wrap fundraiser grossed $5,981, this netted $2,392 into the students’ accounts. Under Judy Mould’s expert guidance the students came within $100 of making the same profit as last year. The Innisbrook order will arrive mid-November. Any family with a large order should anticipate pick-up arrangements for that time. The students will be alerted when the shipment has arrived. Again, congratulations to Judy and the students / families who participated in this fundraiser. Remember Christmas is around the corner and your entertainment needs can be met through our CHICKEN / MEAT / APPETIZERS sale. Order sheets will be distributed by Wendy Trousdell on Monday, October 31st and are due back by 3:00pm Friday, November 4th. Pickup will be Thursday, November 10th from the back parking lot.

A very important reason for the success of the String program was the great private teachers that many of the students had studied with.

1994 Awards Evening & Victoria Trip Chris Best: Are the elementary feeder schools important in regards to the String program? Peter: The elementary feeder schools make a world of difference. I was able to establish a positive relationship with the elementary children and with their parents. This consisted of grade 4 beginners, the grade 5 - 6 second year kids and a grade 7 group. I soon discovered that the more advanced grade 6 and 7s needed something extra to hold their interest into high school. I came up with the idea of an after school group for the grade 7s which I called the grade 7 orchestra or GSO. It drew grade 7 students from the four different elementary schools and later added advanced players from Grade 5 and 6. They were carpooled to Handsworth to rehearse Thursday afternoons. They loved this because they were rehearsing in a high school. They got to hear the jazz band and other groups rehearsing and it made them eager to want to join the music program when they too started high school. The students usually joined Strings again in the high school ensembles. So my elementary strings program became a goodtraining ground for my orchestras. String Orchestra continued to find its place in the music program of Handsworth. Each year we recorded our repertoire and toured to places such as Costa Rica, Disney World and Disney Land, and San Francisco, Portland, etc. When I retired in 2010, Sab Kabok, my successor, has continued to grow the program and is doing a fantastic job. Chris Best: Had you taught in the Lower Mainland before you came to Handsworth?

A well-known, professional Concert Band known as “THE PACIFIC WIND ENSEMBLE” has invited Handsworth’s Senior Concert Band to be the guest high school band at a concert to be held Thursday, October 27. This unique event will be held at the North Vancouver Centennial Theatre at 7:30 pm. The purpose of the evening is to raise funds for the North Vancouver Elementary Band & Strings program. Besides being an extremely worthy cause the performance also provides a great learning experience for our Senior musicians. They will be featured in a band solo as well as having the opportunity to play along with the professional musicians in “THE PACIFIC WIND ENSEMBLE”. Gordon Cherry, the talented, first trombone player for the Vancouver Symphony, will be the special guest artist for this gala evening.

Peter: After UBC, I continued teaching in Surrey part-time, establishing a Band program and also took a part time position teaching at Vancouver Christian Secondary School (near Grandview and Boundary) where I founded and taught a string program as well as a band program. In 1988 there was an opening to teach full time in strings in North Vancouver. The assignment was comprised of three elementary schools and Argyle Secondary. Argyle, which didn’t have a string program, had decided one year before to start one.

The “unrehearsed” ALUMNI JAZZ ENSEMBLE inspired us all with their terrific sound and provided a fitting climax to a most enjoyable evening. “JUZT JAZZ ‘94” truly was a performance of celebration, not only in the art of jazz but also in the high level of excellence our music students have achieved since the season opener last October.

Everything from “Jazzy Jingles” to “Classic Carols” will be featured by our four Concert Bands, our two Jazz Ensembles and the School Orchestra. Christmas wouldn’t be the same at Handsworth if we didn’t have “SWEET MUSIC”, our wonderful and festive Christmas Concert with dessert!

RIGHT: Honouring Nancy Argue, Publicity Manager for the bands. ABOVE: Senior Band in Handsworth gym.

Concert highlights were many. One was the very dynamic debut of a newly formed JAZZ CHOIR under the direction of Mrs. Kate Lane. Another highlight was the guest performance of the SOUTH WHIDBEY ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL JAZZ BAND travelling from South Whidbey Island in Washington State with their Band Director, Mr Anthony Smith. Our two Band Teachers, Mr Reb and Mr Woodward charmed the audience with a very impressive STAFF DUET. And who can forget the exciting “DRUM-OFF” staged between Mr Reb and one of our Senior Jazz drummers, Julian Taylor, during the performance of THE COLCHESTER CHA CHA?

The fall season brings with it a lovely tradition for the Music Department. Our grads are invited every HOMECOMING CONCERT to return to Handsworth for a fun, musical reunion. Grads as far back as 1976 are expected to attend to honour Mr. Bob Rebagliati’s 20th year as the Music Director at Handsworth Secondary. Mr. Reb has been the driving factor behind Handsworth’s award-winning music program which is known throughout the community for its high level of EXCELLENCE.

The Homecoming ‘95 Concerts Welcome to our 1995-96 season opener, THE HOMECOMING ’95 CONCERTS! These concerts are held at 7:30 pm in the gym. The ORCHESTRA, the two JUNIOR CONCERT BANDS and the JUNIOR JAZZ ENSEMBLE will perform Tuesday, November 7th. The SENIOR & INTERMEDIATE groups, as well as some very special guests, the HANDSWORTH MUSIC ALUMNI, will be showcased Wednesday, November 8th, at the Senior Evening of Music.

20 Years of Excellence Yes, it is true! Mr. Bob Rebagliati (or just “MR. REB” or even “REB”) has been teaching band students here at Handsworth since 1976. But he has not just been teaching, it has been much more than that! Mr. Reb has been the driving factor behind Handsworth’s award-winning music program. For two decades now he has been totally committed to his students and his band program and his striving for excellence. The Handsworth Music Program has expanded and developed since its beginnings. Now the music department includes two other very accomplished co-workers that teach along side Mr. Reb. Mr. Keith Woodward conducts the Intermediate Concert Band and co-instructs (with Reb) the Senior Concert Band. Mr. Peter Van Ooyen teaches our Orchestra and Strings program at Handsworth. Mr. Reb doesn’t believe in confining his students’ education to playing alone. He also instructs them in the historical aspect of music. He stresses the importance of listening to all types of music from the classics to jazz. Reb credits his success of having so many award winning bands over the years to his own love of music and his devotion to his students. “EXCELLENCE and PERSISTENCE of my students can only be obtained if I require excellence and persistence of myself. It’s not enough to teach with your head. You have to teach with your heart as well.” The lasting results of Reb’s program can be seen in the many students that go on to become professional musicians. The class of 1979 alone boasts six pros. Well over 50 of Reb’s charges have gone on to careers or further education in music. A few of them are even internationally known in the professional music world. Mr. Reb won a Distinguished Citizen Award and the Annual Professional Music Educator’s Award in 1991. In 1994 Reb was the recipient of the North Vancouver Music Educator’s Award of Excellence. He was chosen for these awards as:

The Grand Piano Wish Campaign

Senior Band Tour 96

We very much want to be able to purchase a “new-to-us” grand piano for the Music Department and the school in the near future. As a result the “Grant Piano Fund” has been established by M.P.A.C. with the endorsement of H.S.S.A. for the purpose of encouraging donations that are tax deductible. We will be launching our “buy a key” promotion at the HOMECOMING ’95 Concerts. There are 88 keys on a piano and our goal is to raise around $12,000.00 (plus tax!). Donations of any size, large or small, are greatly appreciated. More information will be announced at the concerts or you may contact the Music Office for more details.

The SENIOR CONCERT BAND and the SENIOR JAZZ BAND will travel to New Orleans on an exciting and very educational Band Tour, April 11-16, 1996. A schedule of trip payments will be sent home soon. The total price of the trip per student (all inclusive) is approximately $1600.00. Plans are well underway for this very special Band trip which provides many wonderful opportunities for our senior band students.

A definite concert highlight will be the official launching of our GRAND PIANO WISH CAMPAIGN. “MUSIC MAN STORES LTD.” have generously donated a grand piano for use at our HOMECOMING ’95 CONCERTS. Greg Smerdjian, a grade 12 student who is studying to be a performing, classical pianist, will honour us by being our guest artist on this magnificent piano.

Chris Best: What are your thoughts on music festivals? Peter: I felt Festivals were important and we went to at least one each year. Besides the Kiwanis Festival, I really liked the Fraser Valley Kiwanis Festival at Kwantlen College in Langley. It was a good motivator for the orchestras and had great adjudicators who knew string technique. It was held every May and we always attended. Whenever we were away on tour I made sure the orchestra always played in three different types of venues at some point on the tour such as: in the community, in a school for their peers and then in a more spontaneous concert in a park or mall where we just came in unannounced and performed. These kinds of performances give students confidence and build camaraderie.

We enjoyed going down to the Northwest String Orchestra Festival in Oregon. The competition was stiff but it gave the students a good understanding of the level of performance in other

It was important for me to be a member of such professional groups as the American String Teachers Association and the National Music Educators and National Orchestra Directors Association. U.S. school music programs often depend on funds allocated by their local city or county tax bases. A gifted director and the

Today, she is a well known bassist out of New York City. Robin and Cassia Streb are other notables from Deep Cove who are professional violists that came through my program.

Reb’s 20th Anniversary

Mr. Peter Van Ooyen teaches our Orches-

Mr. Reb won a Distinguished Citizen Award and the Annual Professional Music Educator’s Award in 1991. In 1994 Reb was the recipient of the North Vancouver Music Educator’s Award of Excellence. He was chosen for these awards as: “an individual who through his accomplishments has not only brought credit to himself, but also to his school and to his community.” Congratulations Mr. Reb on your 20th year at Handsworth Secondary! Thank you for your wonderful gift of music to our kids and to our school. Written by” (Mrs.) Nancy Argue MPAC – Publicity Manager

tra and Strings program at Handsworth. A few of them are even internationally known in the professional music world.

continued from page 201 Chris Best: Who were some of the private teachers you brought in to teach your kids? Peter: There were always professional musicians coming in to teach and help out with the program. Musicians such as Lee Duckles (former principal cellist with the VSO) who lives on the North Shore, Claude Giguere of the North Shore Celtic Ensemble, numerous other Symphony musicians, Carolyn Cole, former member of the VSO and Lions Gate Sinfonia, Cam Wilson from Django, and others. An interesting story regarding Lee’s dedication to the students: one winter morning he was coming in to teach a workshop and I was late due to snow conditions. He started my class and rehearsed with them until I arrived.

Mr. Reb won a Distinguished Citizen Award and the Annual Professional Music Educator’s Award in 1991.

Performances have included concerts at Highlands Church, Seymour United Church, the Lucas Centre, Christ Church Cathedral and the Centennial Theatre. From September to May the orchestra operates on two levels: the Sinfonia Strings and the Concerti Players. In January, it comes together with the addition of woodwinds and brass and

This years Sweet Music Concert was better than ever. The bands played beautifully all the old Christmas favorites and everyone enjoyed the tastes of the season. Mr. Woodward can be seen below directing one of his bands through another traditional favorite.

At 6:00am on the Morning of Friday April 11 we departed Handsworth school on our trek to the BC Interior jazz Festival in Kelowna.

We were on our way to Mount Boucherie Secondary School to play a 1:00pm concert by our concert band and jazz band. It was a short but successful concert and by 1:45 we were on the road again this time to Lakeview Heights Elementary School for another concert at 2:15pm. This one was short as well and we were back to Mount Boucherie to meet our billets by 3:45pm or should I say the Junior Jazz and Intermediates were while the Senior Jazz members got to stay at the Comfort Inn. I guess that was one thing us Juniors had to look forward to as we got older.

That evening we made up for it though. Senior Jazz Band to attend a jazz concert while us Juniors had the choice of going to the concert or heading to Parkinson Recreational Centre for their Friday Night Teen Night of pool, weights and dance.

The next morning we were all up at 7:30 bright and early and by 8:30 we were all at the Kelowna Community Theatre and Laurel Arts Centre where the Junior Jazz were to warm-up at 8:50am. At 9:15am we performed a concert. At 9:45am there was a Jazz Workshop and then we all had lunch at 11:30am. At 1:00pm we were back to the workshop listening to other bands. At 2:40pm our Senior Jazz started to warm-up. There was excitement in the air! At 3:30pm they took the stage while us (right)

Juniors listened with much admiration because one day not very far away, that would be us sitting up there. Afterwards, the seniors gave a workshop while we all watched and listened. After supper we went back to watch the seniors perform at the Finals.

At 10:00 pm it was back to the Comfort Inn for the seniors but they deserved it. On Sunday morning April 13, after ahearty breakfast, we all boarded the busses for the trek back to Vancouver after an amazing three days at the B.C. Interior Jazz Festival. We all arrived safe and sound back at Handsworth at 5:30pm. It was a great trip and a good initiation for us juniors for what we knew was going to come in the years that followed.

Handsworth Strings have experienced another good year with record numbers of strings students projected for 1997-1998. Highlights of the year were the exciting tour to Victoria, Elementary School Concerts, and a visit from the Corvalis, Oregon High School String Orchestra.

1997 PARENT SERVICE AWARD It is a great pleasure to speak about this parent. For nine years she has made many and various contributions to the Handsworth Music Program. Her main “portfolio” on Handsworth Music Parent Advisory Committee was that of publicity. Creating and circulating countless posters, promotional letters and complimentary tickets, she has showed her flare for quality, individuality and always a unique “angle” to catch the interest of potential audience members. She gave of her time to chaperone music outings and major tours.

Parent Service Awards Her many contributions to both the Handsworth School newsletter and the Music Program newsletter were of consistently high quality in accuracy, originality and zest! She also took the time to look after many years of photographs, articles and memorabilia in the archives of the Music Program scrapbooks. In addition, she also created vibrant and eye-catching displays of our music groups accomplishments in the main hallway showcases. unteer. Her contributions have been steady, high quality, original, creative and many fold. Nancy, with this award we honour you and we thank you. To the parent / guardian of each Handsworth Music Student: Handsworth School Music Parents Advisory Committee (M.P.A.C.) is the organization of Handsworth School Music Parents. Any parent or guardian of a student who is participating in Band or Strings is a member of the MPAC general body. MPAC provides guidance and support to the music directors. The executive (about 12 people) meets approximately five times a year and organizes most of the non-musical aspects of the program. Fundraising activities which are concentrated between September and early March are offered so that students can raise funds for their music trip accounts. To ensure the ongoing success and quality of the music program, it is very important that music program families participate in the operation of MAPC and in the fundraising activities. Grade 8 and Grade 9 band and strings students need to begin their continual effort to build a healthy balance into their accounts so that they can have adequate funds in their trip accounts by the time they are in the Intermediate Concert Band, Senior Strings and in the Senior Concert Band. The two bands travel on alternate years and the Strings travels yearly. MPAC’s intent is to have the individual music accounts at a sufficient balance so that the family budget is not largely affected when the “trip time” arrives.

We acknowledge that September is a financially demanding month but the three lucrative events are scheduled in September so that the products can be available for Christmas. Please realize that the campaigns offer items that many households would normally purchase for Christmas time. In September, we will be offering Entertainment and Gold C Books, Student Price Cards, Magazine Subscriptions, and Gift Wrap and Accessories. These campaign start during the first week of school. MPAC is always looking for new ideas for raising funds – the basic dynamics being minimal time involvement and high returns.

(Continued from above) John Richardson: Christmas Concert Chairperson and MPAC Cice-Chairperson and Pat Crowe: Associate Chairperson for the Christmas Concert. We would also like to thank Richard and Dianne Spray, parents of Michael Whittle, Senior Concert Band for putting up our concert signs in Edgemont Village and on Capilano Road.

Festivals

MUSICFEST May 12-16 at UBC Only high school music groups who have demonstrated “superior” performance – either at a regional festival, or in audition are invited to this national music festival. Handsworth is proud to be sending four groups:  Senior Jazz Quartet  Intermediate Concert Band  Junior Jazz Band  Senior Jazz Band And the Senior Jazz Band has been asked to give one of the special guest performances at the festival’s climax. A real honour. Musicfest is being held in Vancouver

this year, for the first time since 1991. It’s at UBC from May 13 to May 16. It is an honour, once again, to have four of our groups approved to participate at Musicfest this year. Those groups are the Intermediate Concert Band, the Junior and Senior Jazz Bands, and the Senior Jazz Quartet. The week-long Festival includes concert and jazz choirs, orchestras, and various vocal and instrumental chamber/jazz combos. In addition to the performances from groups across Canada; instrumental workshops, clinics, evening concerts, and parties are included. As there will be over 6000 par-

ticipants, members of the public can only attend by purchasing an Adjudicator’s Pass for $30 which gives admission to hear some of Canada’s finest young jazz musicians plus the evening concerts. The cost of this National Festival is $53.00 per person for Intermediate and Senior

Jazz Band members plus an additional $30.00 for Junior Jazz and Senior Jazz Quartet members.

MusicFest runs six days from Tuesday-Sunday. You will be able to attend at least three days: Wednesday (Combo only), Thursday (Int. only), or Friday (Sr. only), Saturday, and Sunday (some of you may be able to attend more workshops and performances after school and some evening concerts). BR

THE JAZZ REPORT AWARDS The Jazz Report, one of Canada’s foremost Jazz magazines offers national awards for excellence in the field of Jazz. This year the awards honour 40 musicians who have made outstanding contributions to the art form over the past year. The winners have been selected by a committee of some 50 newspaper and magazine journalists, radio hosts, educators, record company personnel, and musicians from across the country who vote by open ballot. Some of this year’s recipients will be Diana Krall, Renee Rosnes (a Handsworth alumni), Jane Bunnett, Rick Wilkins, DD Jackson, Kenny Wheeler, Don Thompson, Bob McConnell, and Bob Rebagliati.

Atlantic Canada Tour

Senior Band Tour 1998 To tour or not to tour seems to be the question of many senior band members regarding the upcoming trip. And the object of indecision is not the cost, as one might expect, but the location. For years, Handsworth’s Senior Tour has frequented exotic cities around the world – New Orleans, San Francisco, Disneyland, and Hawaii, among others – so that the announcement of the destination of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, which conjured up grey images of bait skiffs and abandoned harbours, was met with less than eager enthusiasm. As one member put it, “Reb said that it was a place you wouldn’t normally go with your family. Well, yeah, exactly. I wonder why!” Despite comments like these, however, any initial displeasure is giving way to a mature optimism building among the students, who are aiming for the ‘make the most of it’ spirit. Some of their comments:  “It’s a good place to go on a band tour; we’ll mainly be doing festivals and band stuff, so it doesn’t really matter where it was, and if it’s a place we’ve never been before, then that’s even better.”  “I’ve never been anywhere in Canada other than BC. This is a good chance to see the country.”  “I wasn’t excited at first, but now I am.”  “It’s pretty expensive. It would have been cheaper to go to LA or somewhere on the coast. We worked it out.”  “What would have been really great is to go to Cape Breton, but this should be good, too. I’m curious to see what may fellow Canadians are like. I mean, same country, same language, but entirely different culture and accent and lifestyle.”  “I’m excited. It should be really cool.”  “I’m hoping to do tourist stuff – go to the beach.”  “It doesn’t sound very exciting. There’s no street life, attractions, stuff to do.”  “It’s not a place I would ever want to go to, but now that we’re going. I really want to go there.”

While enjoying their two week jaunt around the Maritime Provinces, the members of the Senior Concert Band will be playing at five different venues. The tour is the culmination of four or five years in the band program, and innumerable chocolate and poinsettia sales, as well as other fund raisers. “In the end”, said one of the parent chaperons, “It’s the bus rides that you’ll remember. The restaurants, the people who you shared a room with. It doesn’t matter where you go – between the music and the friends, you’re going to have the time of your life.” By Anna Stevenson

Reb actually had another reasonfor making this trip, the Atlantic Band Festival. While in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, the 52 Grade 11 and 12 students performed in the Atlantic Band Festival. About 50 school bands took part. Hand-

Sean Clark on drums and Brandi Disterheft on string bass. Several students received individual awards as well.

sworth was the only school from west of Ontario to participate. In all, they performed seven performances over six days. Thhe bands scooped several awards in the Halifax festival. The Handsworth Jazz Quartet was judged most promising group. It was comprised of Laila Biali on piano, Charlotte Mould on trombone,

The Handsworth Zone Band Program

The Handsworth Zone Band Program was thought of as one school with five building sites—Handsworth Sec., Canyon Heights El., Cleveland El., Highlands El., and Montroyal El. The Program actually started with the MayJune Music Aptitude Appreciation testing for all grade four students, with hundreds of follow-up phone calls to the families. The auditioned Handsworth Elementary Honour Band (HEHB) gave the chance for the musically keen students to rehearse in the Handsworth band room once a week and perform at a higher music level. The private

El. and the Handsworth Elementary Honour Band (HEHB) performed at the Kiwanis Band Festival held at Willingdon Church in Burnaby. The grade 5 bands from those two schools performed at the N. V. School District Beginning Band Festival held at the Lucas Centre. The HEHB ended each year with a bowling/pizza party or lazer tag/pizza party. 1994: HEHB does an overnight tour to Saltspring Island as part of our school band exchange with Fernwood El. Each band would perform in one adjudicated festival each year in addition to three school concerts plus one Zone concert. The HEHB would have extra performances. Cleveland El. always had three levelsof concert bands— grades 5, 6 & 7. Canyon Hts. and Highlands occasionally had three levels, and Montroyal always had two levels— grade 5 & 6/7.

The Handsworth Music Program was and still is a cohesive program that included elementary and high school students. Instructors taught in both elementary and high school which added to the family approach.

All future sax players started on clarinet in grade 5, and “added” tenor sax in latter years. This way we would always have “doublers” for the jazz band repertoire at Handsworth. We would find our best flute musicians and encourage them to play alto sax in the jazz bands at Handsworth. High music aptitude or previous music instrument experience oboe students were only allowed to play oboe if they would take private lessons for at least the first year. The same with French horn students in grade five. We would encourage French horn student’s with “good ears” to double on trumpet in the Handsworth jazz bands as well. Piano players comprised most of the percussion sections in the four feeding elementary schools. The

percussion students only played mallet percussion up to the Christmas concert, before we added un-tuned percussion and tympani to their rehearsals. We managed to have tympani at three of the four elementary schools and roto-toms at the other one. Those that played in the jazz bands at Handsworth would rotate between tunes with the three stations in the jazz band—drum set, mallet percussion and Latin percussion. 1994-1995 (1993-94 was the first year of the El. Band & Strings Parent Association): Same as festivals as in 1990-1993 but also added Highlands El. to Woody’s teaching assignment.

Elementary students became familiar through visits to the high school how the music program operated and ususally stayed with from grade 5 through 12 producing many fine musicians over the years that went on to professional careers in music.

June Celebration Concerts and Award Nights Tuesday June 1 and Wednesday June 2nd.

NO one ever has enough money these days. But for schools, raising cash can be especially tough. Still, Handsworth’s parents and friends are hard at it as a new science lab and new science equipment is top of the shopping list. Provincial grant money only goes so far, so now the gang at Handsworth is taking it upon themselves to raise the $250,000 they need to purchase the new gear. On Saturday, Nov. 6, the school held a special fundraising Construction Zone Party complete with live auction, music, food and fun. Handsworth’s impressive jazz band was there and there were lots of prizes and goodies to keep the crowd happy. Congratulations, everyone, on a job well done.

Nelson Tour

On Thursday morning April 15 at 8:00am we all arrived at Handsworth to board the busses for Nelson, B.C. We departed Handsworth at 9:00am and arrived in Nelson at

6:00pm after a very long bus ride. Our accomodation was at the Viking Motel on Kootenay Lake. We spent the rest of the evening getting acquainted with Nelson (a vintage/refurbished movie theatre, Gravity indoor rock climbing and the Savoy Lanes Bowling Alley. For many of us Juniors and Intermediates this was our first trip away from home without our families. We were all back safe and sound at our motel by 11:00pm just in time for lights out.

The next morning we were all up for breakfast at 8:00am and then it was off to L.V. Rogers Senior Secondary School and a concert band warm-up in Room 205 at 10:15am. At 11:00am we had an adjudication clinic in the gymnasium and our first taste of the Nelson Music Festival. That afternoon after lunch on our way to Ainsworth Hot Springs a small group of us stayed at Kootenay Kayaks while the rest went on to the hot springs. Dinner was at 6:30pm and they we were all off to a concert at L.V. Rogers performed by the Campbell Collegiate Chamber Choir and Wind Ensemble. At 10:00pm it was back to the Viking Motel and lights out at 11:00pm.

The next morning it was back to the school where our Junior Jazz Band had a warm-up in Room 232 before going into the festival for their adjudication clinic in Room 226. After lunch we all attended an instrument clinic.

After lunch we all had to attend one clinic of a group equal or at a higher level than ourselves. At 8:00pm that evening we all attended Hoja (a capella vocal group) concert at the school and recieved our festival participation plaques. Then it was back to the Viking Motel where you guessed it lights out at 11:00pm.
