Welcome to the Neighbourhoods of Metro Vancouver. We now have ten guides. See our website to read them all. This is where the locals shop. It is for both locals and visitors alike and always well received by new Vancouverites.

East Vancouver is larger than most realize. Its official boundaries are from Boundary Road in the east to Ontario Street in the west and from Marine Drive in the south to Hastings Street in the north. There are several skytrain stations on the eastside: Joyce-Collingwood, Rupert Street, Renfrew Street, Commercial Drive and Main Street. There are several new community centres located on the eastside: Creekside, Mt. Pleasant, Hillcrest, Trout Lake, Kensington, Killarney, Champlain Heights and Sunset.

Not many people know that the youth band movement in Canada started in Vancouver in 1933. In the early sixties band became an accredited course in Vancouver high schools and ever since wonderful mussic programs have thrived all over Metro Vancouver. We want to tell you about some of them in a segment we call Musical Moments.

Our guides are meant to be taken with you as you visit each neighbourhood.

So get out and explore the neighbourhoods of Vancouver’s eastside.

SY FARM MARKET-

Cheap Asian supermarkets are a beautiful thing.

Parking is available along the side streets, as well as Hastings after 1800.

The place is authentic. Nice and dirty, with sassy staff. Just like Chinatown, but without the hobos.

The best time to hit these places is just before closing, as you can bargain for the food. The staff want to go home, and you want a discount. Everyone wins.

Mr. Red Cafe - We are a proud local restaurant who will bring you a delicious refreshing taste of Northern Vietnam’s food. The Soul of Hanoi’s culture and cuisine right at the heart of Vancouver

The cuisine of any region holds its own sophistication, and it is the pride of the people there. Hanoi cuisine, in particular, seems to be the unison of all regions’ cuisine, each dish has its unique charm with the taste that is so familiar yet cannot be mistaken with any other province’s specialty. However, one special thing about Hanoian delicious dishes is that they are all very rustic - which tourists often call street food.

Tamam: Fine Palestinian Cuisine

Traditional Middle Eastern meals made with halal meat are the draw at this simple, laid-back eatery.

Long Live Cats and Dogs is located in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood of East Vancouver. We began this business to truly help pets, educate consumers and allow people to make informed decisions when it comes to their pet’s health and longevity. We also strive to promote individual artisans and crafters by bringing in unique, handmade items for your pet, and we focus on items created with recycled or environmentallyfriendly materials. We will not sell any products, no matter how popular, if we feel it is detrimental to your pet’s health.

Vancouver Technical School Music Program

The Music Program at Van Tech is home to more than 600 students engaged in concert band, orchestra, choir, and chamber music ensembles. While meaningful and lasting education is at the core of the program, more than a dozen in-school and community performances are given each year.

The Van Tech Music Program builds on the belief that all students possess both the capacity and desire to express themselves creatively as individuals and as a community. The fundamental principle of music at Van Tech does not seek to produce a collection of virtuoso musicians, but to help prepare students to be educated consumers of music in their youth and adult lives. The following excerpt from the Ministry of Education details the commitment expected from each student:

To honour the commitment to yourself, and your fellow musicians, by being prepared for for each rehearsals by making every effort to contribute the pursuit of musical excellence.

Van Tech has a long history of fine musicianship in its music ensembles. Rod Van Dorn was the first band director at Van Tech when band was on the timetable. After him came Glenn David. In 1959 there was a small band (extracurricular) directed by Mr. R.S. Thompson. There seems to have been only about 19 students involved. Then, Mark Reid moved the program into the stratosphere with his enthusiasm, committment and talent.

To read more about the history of the Van Tech music program go to https://vancouverschoolbands.wordpress.com/category/vancouver-s-s/vancouver-technicalvancouver-s-s/

To find out when their next concerts are for the upcoming year visit Van Tech Music Council on Facebook.

The Story of Frog Hollow Neigbourhood House

The year was 1968, B.C.’s population had just topped 2 million. Even then, East Vancouver was considered the more affordable area to live and was traditionally home to lower-income, working class families characterized by a diverse mix of cultures and lifestyles. In 1968, the most notable building being developed on the “East Side” was the Pacific Coliseum where, that same year, musician Jimi Hendrix rocked the stage with his innovative rock/jazz sound in front of thousands of passionate Vancouver fans.

A few blocks away, another less musical sound was keeping people awake through the night. From a small bog near Skeena Terrace Housing Complex, large families of singing frogs were serenading one another. Their croaks were clear, strong, and undeniably irritating to the local residents, but paralleled the underlying struggles of the community.

A group of concerned citizens came together at Skeena Terrace to brainstorm an action plan that would raise funds for community programs, foocusing on the support oof local families and alleviating the challenges of day-to-day life. Driven by their grassroots spirit and a shared dream, this team successfully raised their voices and garnered support to get the Thunderbird Community Centre built. With inspiration from their local amphibian neighbours, they appropriately named themselves the “Frog Hollow Neighbourhood Group.”

In 1977, Frog Hollow joined the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of Greater Vancouver (now “of BC”). The new entity established: public recreation programs, preschools for working families, English as a second language and adult literacy classes. It also introduced social workers to strengthen support for the community and participation flourished!

Today, Frog Hollow has grown dramatically and offers many programs for children, families, youth, adults, seniors and the community at-large. Check us out at 2131 Renfrew Street (at 5th Ave) or online at www.froghollow.bc.ca .

The Reggis Approach

Our dedicated staff continues their journey of discovering, absorbing and embracing the world-renowned Reggio Emilia approach to childcare. This critically acclaimed method, founded in the Romagna regino of Italy, in the city of Reggio Emilia, offers a holistic, child-centered program for children between 18 months and 12 years.

Following the interests of both the child and the adult, learning and teaching happen simultaneously in an inspiring and dynamic environment. A less strructured approach and a focus on building positive relationships, art, children’s curiosity in developing the curriculum and documenting through photographs and videos allows for a rich and ever-changing, spontaneous process to develop.

Families are encouraged to participate fully and are kept up to date of the many activities and projects the children engage in.

The British Columbia Beefeater Band

1969 Edinburgh Tattoo

If you were a young boy or girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen living in Vancouver in the 1960s, the Kitsie Boys were not the only band you could join. I call that period, the Golden Age of Community Bands. There were no less than five top rated community bands that you could join. Another one of those bands was the British Columbia Beefeater Band, also known as the Lion’s Band. They were the official band for the B.C. Lion’s Football Club and were a show band. They started touring in 1950, but they were not

called the Beefeaters back then. That came later in the mid 1960s when they were hired by Dal Richards to perform the halftime show between Lion’s football games. This episode looks at their first overseas trip that they made in the summer of 1969, to play in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

The year 1969, marked the first trip off the continent to Europe for the British Columbia Beefeater Band. They arrived in London on July 21 via a PWA charter flight from Vancouver. They were quickly whisked off to Astor College in London where they spent the next three days sightseeing around London and as far away as Oxford, Warwick Castle, Stratford-on-Avon and Banbury as well as Windsor Castle and Eton. Their place of residence in London was in a residential area affiliated with Middlesex Hospital, a medical college.

On July 24th, the Beefeater Band departed England at Dover for Ostende by steamer and then coach to Brussells where they stayed overnight at the Hotel Van Belle..The next day after some sightseeing they were off to Antwerp for more sightseeing, then over the border into Holland for a two night stay in Arnheim at the Hotel Carnegie and Hotel Bakker. They toured nearby Amsterdam in the daytime.(Continued on page 93)

FALSE CREEK FLATS

Former

Home Of The 2010 Olympic Village

The area bordering Main Street to Cambie Street and from False Creek up to Broadway, has been transformed. This part of Vancouver, known as the False Creek Flats, has long been an industrial area, with light manufacturing being carried on primarily. Over the years there has been a slow transformation taking place, with restaurants and eateries becoming ever more plentiful. Companies such as

Toko Foods and Milano Coffee still carry on their manufacturing plants but they also run higher profile eateries, at street level. The area is bustling with other interesting businesses as well. Eclectic in nature, one never knows what one will find around the next corner, which is all part of the fun.

The development taking place was home to the Olympic Village in February 2010. The Village is now a valuable legacy, both for the community and for sport. The Vancouver Village has been developed into a model sustainable community with market and affordable housing, parkland, and office and shopping complexes as seen in the artists conception below.

TERRA BREADS

Back in 1993, we made our first artisan loaves at a small bakery in Vancouver — Kitsilano to be exact. And details are important to us. Always have been. From day one, we’ve made bread using the best, freshest, carefully-selected ingredients with a healthy obsession for perfection. Each and every day, we arose at baker’s hours and filled that small 4th Avenue storefront with the delicious smell of fresh baked goods. And slowly, and then not so slowly, it filled with customers — some of whom still drop by to see us every day.

Today we’re still hands-on bakers with the benefit of a few extra helping hands. We bake in stone hearth ovens, and use French linen proofing cloth. Each and every loaf is scored by hand with its signature mark. In fact, we can tell which baker scored each loaf as it’s a little like signing their work.

Perhaps most importantly, our sourdough starter actually links many of the loaves we make today with the ones from decades ago. We can get new ovens, but the essence of our foods — their very flavour — is carried through that link. In a lot of ways, we’re still the same hands-on, neighbourhood bakery we were in 1993. Just in a few more neighbourhoods.

Swiss Bakery has provided Vancouver with a variety of delectable goods for close to 20 years. Swiss Bakery cultivates baking in a European style that accentuates original and hand crafted goods, like our Artisan breads, pastries, and cakes. Our soft, traditional German pretzel is one of Swiss Bakery’s specialties and is one of Vancouver Magazine’s Top 100 Best Things to Eat and Drink in Vancouver (2009).

This amazing bakery...3rd avenue off Main is going to become my weekend hangout if it’s not careful! I stepped inside and was immediately reminded of bakeries back home growing up. All different breads, just that home made look and feel to everything...

Picked up many breads which were devoured at home (there was a pecan one which they cut up for us and we managed to make it last a week!). There is some seating inside and out, and the usual choice of hot drinks. Must try the coffee next time!

eautomobilia.com is the full-service online division of Wilkinson’s Automobilia. Our retail store has been in continuous operation since October 1988, and eAutomobilia was launched in October 2000. The shop is nestled in a quiet, tree-lined street, minutes from the Vancouver downtown core. It is packed with great stuff, so much so, in fact, that it has just about reached critical mass!

Shelves and display cases run from wall to wall and from floor to (12 foot) ceiling. Everything is very well organized for the simple fact that if it weren’t, the staff would never find anything!! You can find both new and used items in the store, and there is fresh (and sometimes musty) stock arriving daily. It is the only store of its kind in British Columbia, and carries one of the largest diversity of automotive collectibles in North America. Wilkinson’s Automobilia/eAutomobilia has it all: Scale model cars, books, shop manuals, posters, art work, current and vintage magazines, as well as pins, clothing and caps. In addition to this, you can also find some more unusual items that would round off even the most avid enthusiasts collection.

An exciting community facility is located in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood! 1 Kingsway features a new community centre, library, child care centre, rental housing, and underground parking.

This project reflects Vancouver’s City Plan vision for developing neighbourhood “centres” that bring together multiple civic services. Principles of sustainability will guide the planning and design of this project to provide a safe and healthy building which makes efficient use of our natural resources and leaves the best legacy for the citizens of Vancouver.

A new 30,750 square foot Mount Pleasant Community Centre will meet the service demands of a growing community and will be more centrally located at 1 Kingsway, within the area it serves. The old community centre at 16th Avenue and Ontario Street has served the Mount Pleasant community for over 35 years. Over the past decade the centre’s cramped quarters, service limitations and need for seismic upgrading have made it clear that a new facility was needed.

The new Mount Pleasant Branch library will double in size from 5,900 square feet to 12,000 square feet enabling Vancouver Public Library to better serve Mount Pleasant’s fast growing community. A larger branch will mean more books and more services including a computer training area, a larger children’s area, a reading lounge, and improvements in reference and information services.

3 Corners Child Care Centre is a brand new facility located in the Mount Pleasant Centre at 1 Kingsway.

The General Public is a sushi joint with a nightclub vibe! The walls are decorated with pop culture paper mache sculptures (all sporting antlers). The theme of the restaurant is (if you look on the business card) MISO HORNY, hence the antlers or horns. It is all very tongue in cheek and aimed at the 20 something crowd. It is a place to experience and get lost in and not to take too seriously. Being a sushi joint there are all sorts of sushi dishes to try and some other items as well, such as a variety of Japanese Curry bowls. They have just opened on the corner of 17th and Main. This corner (at the very end of Mt. Pleasant) is really developing fast with a new Shoppers Drugs across 17th avenue and the venerable Granville Island Toy Company opposite on the eastside of Main Street.

The Granville Island Toy Company This store has quickly become a staple of young families on Vancouver’s East side. With its friendly neighborhood feel and helpful staff, shopping for toys has never been more convenient. Mention the name “The Granville Island Toy Company” and seldom will you find a Vancouverite who doesn’t know what you are talking about. Their flagship store (located in Kids Market on Granville Island) has been serving generations of families for almost 30 years. People who used to come in as children are now coming to the store with their own kids! The Granville Island Toy Company is a family run business so they care just as much as you do about the toys your children play. Unlike the “big box stores”, the owners and staff hand select what comes into the store. Product is based on quality, not on volume. “We focus on finding suppliers who care for kids as much as we do. If it’s not goodenough for our own children to play with, then it’s not good enough for our customers.” Their motto: “We don’t cease to play because we grow old, we grow old because we cease to play.” G.B Shaw

For over 15 years Murata has offered customers distinct Japanese tableware and gifts at a good value.

Over this time we have seen more people in North America became interested in, and familiar with, Japanese culture - particularly with the Japanese food culture. We have also witnessed more people seeking Japanese decorative items to to personalize their homes. This seems to be a natural movement to be found in a multi-culture city like Vancouver.

We do not want to be just an ordinary store selling Japanese tableware and gifts. We are hoping to better communicate with our customers by promoting the concept of “WA LIFESTYLE,” which brings you a feeling of warmth and peace in your life.

The Japanese character “WA” originally meant harmony, peace, and balance. It was a guiding concept in Japanese culture with various subtle yet different associated meanings.

Why choose compounds over comercially available products? Imagine if your child needs to take medication, but is disgusted with the taste of the large pill. She spits it onto the floor. You toss the dirty pill into the garbage and try again with another pill. The same instance occurs. Was part of the pill absorbed? What do you do now? What if the pill was flavoured and smaller? Imagine how easy it would be for your kid to swallow kid-sized pills. The medicine stays in, they enjoy the taste and you won’t have wasted any of the pills!

Medications are often difficult for a variety of patients to take. Think outside of children: people afraid of needles, the elderly, those with allergies, and even our furry friends at home! Medications on the market can be filled with ingredients causing the patient to reject the medication. Our compounding is accessible for your needs, and can modify medications by extracting certain products like gluten sugar, soy, casein and even dyes. Plus we are able to customize dosages, forms, as well as strengths, so that medications can be taken as both prescribing doctor and patient see fit!

The Royal Caadian Mounties unfortunately had their exciting musical ride reduced to walking pace due to the lack of space on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. The performance lacked the life of movement and the impact of the bloodcurdling charge, which has had to be missed out.

The RCMP were overshadowed somewhat by their enthusiastic young non-service colleagues in the British Columbia Beefeater Band. It is the first visit to this country by the seventy member group who all wear the Tudor style dress of the Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London. The average age is eighteen and they are led by an enthusiastic drum-major and five female jesters. Both organizations will perform in all twenty-eight performances of the tattoo.

Canadians steal the show with all that jazz

Crowds estimated at between 80,000 and 100,000 lined the route and basked in the sunshine. massed pipes and drums led the march, but the favourites with the crowd were the Canadian contingent, ed by the British Columbia Beefeater Band. Led by five baton-twirling majorettes who pranced their way along the street, the band gave an atmosphere of relaxed joviality, in contrast to the rather dour pomp of some of the military participants. They were followed by a squad of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who also received a tremendous cheer.(Cont. page 102)

Seniors Hub & Neighbourly Together

Introducing at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House

What is a Seniors HUB? A Seniors HUB is a collaborative, community-based model that enables and supports seniors independence and active participation in our community. The HUB is a network of individuals, groups and organizations with the common goal to engage and serve seniors. The essential part of a Seniors HUB is that seniors lead, govern, identify needs, and organize to meet those needs.

What is Neighbourly Together? Neighbourly together trains volunteers to reach out to vulnerable seniors in our community. It is an outreach initiative which connects seniors to needed supports and creates a sense of connection and belonging.

How can you get involved?

We are looking for Neighbourly Together volunteers to help reach out to isolated and vulnerable seniors.

If you are:

 Patient, friendly and understanding

 Care about Seniors and their connection to supports and services

 Interested and able to conduct outreach

Then we would like to hear from you! Please contact the program coordinator. Anya McDonald, Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, 604.879.8208

The ArtWay is a learning center that offers classes and workshops for adults, youth and children. Our goal is student centered learning, we teach you the basics and then you guide us. We will teach you what you want to learn, follow the path you choose to creating your own masterpieces.

The ArtWay was founded, January 2010, by prominent local artist Denna Erickson. For many years Denna has wanted to provide the community with a center that teaches art as a journey, as a process rather than as an end result. Denna teaches students how to tap into their creative side, how to put onto paper the beauty that they see around them. The ArtWay is the result of a dream – a learning center for people of all ages and ability levels. We are a business that offers classes for children youth and adults. Our aim is to enable people to explore their creative side through expression in various mediums. We believe that the making or art and expression of creativity are guided processes in which the student plays a very major role.

Savio Volpe is a restaurant styled after the classic osteria; rustic fare in the Italian tradition of freshness and regionality, using groceries gathered in the nearby lakes, oceans, farms and fields. Everything is prepared in the simplest, most flavourful way; pasta is handmade fresh every day – fatta a mano in casa – and meat, poultry and fish are kissed by smoke over the wood-fired grill and rotisserie. And of course, a long list of friendly Italian wines and old world coffee to inspire conversation and good cheer. Above all else, Savio celebrates liveliness, warmth and hospitality. Viva la convivialità!

Fraserhood is a unique one street, one block collection of eateries, art classes and more that is lots of fun!

ABOVE: Mrs. McKinnon pictured with members of the Canadian Beefeaters who visited her last week

Mrs. Gene McKinnon, and her restless urge for meeting young people, has seen the Canadian Mounties and Beefeaters visit her Linlithgow home. Mrs. McKinnon (85) is “queen” of the world’s liqueur industry and has Williamcraigs farm as a busy sideline to the profitable Drambuie firm of which she is chairman.

Children’s eyes sparkled for an hour as they were transported from their world of nurses and doctors. The occasion was a special show by Edinburgh Tattoo performers at the Princess Margaret Rose Hospital at Fairmilehead. Children sat in beds and looked on enthralled as kilted pipers marched up and down and redcoated soldiers playing flutes and drums wheeled and turned on the lawn.

B.C. Beefeater Band Back; British Show a ‘Smash Hit’

“We were a complete smash hit at the tattoo,” said Gordon Olson. The festival producer and many others said we were the number one item there and the producer hopes to have us back in the tattoo in 1971 or 1972. “We definitely put Canada and B.C. on the map.”

Olson said the band played before about 250,000 people at the festival and about 85 million television viewers when one night of the tatoo was broadcast by the British Broadcasting Corp. (Continued on page 105)

The band, whose members range in age from 14 to 19 was the only Canadian youth group participating in the festival, which also included the R.C.M.P. Musical Ride. The seven week tour, the first overseas tour for the band, began with performances in Belgium, Holland, West Germany, Luxembourg and France. It then performed for a month in the 90-minute tattoo, giving 28 performances consisting of a 12-minute individual act and a part in the finale of massed bands.

“We were the first of what are called show bands to appear in the tattoo,” said Olson. Band members also included the Jesters majorette group.

“The young people in the band did a great job representing Canada, both musically and personally in the way they conducted themselves,” said Olson.

The youths paid for much of the $29,000 cost of the trip themselves by raising money through bazaars and fund drives.

Festival organizers paid $5,000 of the cost and the B.C. government contributed $4,200. Each band member paid $550. A homecoming concert is scheduled for September 17 at the B.C. Lions football game in Empire Stadium.

It Ain’t Over Until Faye Leung the Hat Lady Sings

The Faye and Dean Leung Story!

How they changed the faces of Canada

Dean and Faye Leung were pioneers in blending the Chinese society with the Caucasian society in Vancouver during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. They both fought the decades old discrimination in Canada against the Chinese and other nminorities.

Together, they accomplished many things in the fields of banking, housing, education and probably most importantly in the field of immigtration category reform. If you are from an immigrant family who came to Canada after 1967, chances are you are here because of Faye Leung. It can probably be said that Canada is multicultural today because of the efforts of Faye Leung.

Faye was also a pioneer in establishing economic ties between Canada and China starting back in 1980, through to today, when China began to open its doors after

the Cutlural Revolution. She was the first Canadian businesswoman to be invited to China by Deng Xiaoping’s government.

The last chapter in her biography is an overview of the Fantasy Gardens boondoggle which saw the first premier in Commonwealth history forced to resign due to his own corruption. Faye is beaten up and smeared by the premier’s lawyers, then the media and made the scapegoat to keep the premier out of jail. A more in-depth look at this entire affair can be read in the book below.

MOVIE: The Ghosts of Chinatown

INVESTMENT: $1 Million

INVESTORS NEEDED: 400

ABOUT: This is an opportunity for small investors to get involved for the first time in a Johnny Depp movie. Ten of Johnny Depp’s movies have either grossed over $1 Billion worldwide or grossed above $500 Million.

CONDITIONS: No money will exchange hands until a producer is on board (Ron Howard) the lead actors all signed (Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep and Sandra Oh) and a studio on board that has a distributor and can guarantee theatrical release (Disney).

RETURN: This budget covers Production $100 Million, Distribution $100 Million, Marketing $100 Million and Actor’s Residuals (cash amount the leads receive after production) $100 Million. Because we are raising the entire cost, this group will be first in line to receive compensation.

THE TRANSACTION: Once we have the investment needed, a Literary Agent in London, England will be engaged to handle all aspects of the transaction; getting a producer on board, the producer getting the actors on board and the studio. The producer will assemble his team, set a schedule and a budget and work will begin on a script.

SYNOPSIS: Faye Leung finds herself on Pender Street in front of the newly opened Chinatown Storytelling Centre. She sees visions of people she used to know going into the various businesses and they see her but say nothing. Unknowingly, she has stumbled into a parallel dimension called Ghost World. It is only for ghosts. The Office has sent down a good wizard (Meryl Streep) to rally the ghosts of Chinatown for an attack on City Hall to get the City to give Chinatown protected heritage status so it won’t disappear. The Mayor wants to sell off the buildings to developers. To read more go to our website: www.warfleetpress.com.
