Welcome to the Neighbourhoods of Vancouver DOWNTOWN edition. This guide points out and writes about the different neighbourhoods of Downtown Vancouver. It is for both locals and visitors alike and offers a special welcome to new Vancouverites as well.

How often have you heard someone say, “Oh, I drive by that neighbourhood all the time but I was there 20 years ago and nothing has changed.” Well, let me tell you things have changed all over Metro Vancouver. The neighbourhoods are buzzing with activity and new developments and of course great local history.

We will let you know who is new in each neighbourhood and also let you know if your old favorites are still around. We will tell you where interesting neighbourhoods have sprung up that you may not know about. Do you know these neighbourhoods: Emery Barnes Park, Crosstown and Railtown? We call them ‘Boutique Neighbourhoods.’ There is so much to discover right here in our own back yard.

Having been born and raised in Vancouver and a heritage writer, I feel qualified to pass on what I remember from my youth about our great city and about the great changes we are continuing to see to this day.

This guide is meant to be kept for a year and to be taken with you as you visit a different neighbourhood each week or weekend as time allows. If you are a tourist, we are sure you will enjoy it too!

So get out and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best

EntranceToEnglishBay&StanleyPark

Denman Street leads either to English Bay or to Stanley Park depending on the direction you take. The stores in this West End neighborhood, which is one of Vancouver’s oldest, range from beach wear to bicycle rentals to casual eateries to the newest in pastry/sweet shops like Cupcake and Marble Slab Creamery. If you

want to stay in this neighborhood there is the Plaza 500 Hotel located just off Denman. This is one of the downtown strolling streets and it is great fun to just walk to English Bay along Denman in the summertime and enjoy the sites. Carry on with a stroll along the English Bay seawall, home to a gigantic fireworks display during July weekends. Try renting a bicycle at Spokes or visiting the latest in Safeway’s. The design is marvelous. Visit the Beaver and Mullet Neighborhood Pub and sit and watch the girls go by or the guys!

King George Secondary School

King George Secondary School is a public secondary school located in the West End of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The school is located in the West End, with two elementary schools feeding in. Some students are from other areas of Vancouver who wish to be in a smaller school environment.

Since July 2006, King George Secondary has been approved by International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme for students in grades 8, 9, and 10,[2] as one of the only 2 schools in the city to offer the MYP Programme.

The school is adjacent to the West End Community Centre, enabling youth to get more involved in their programs. King George is noted for its Technology Immersion program which lasts from grade 8 to 9. Students in the programme use iPads to enhance their core subjects. Most of their assignments are completed online through King George’s Moodle online learning system, which was implemented at the school by Tech Immersion graduates along with a new website in early 2011. Students learn HTML along with traditional computing tasks, as well as how to use professional applications including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign. Students who participate in this program are known in their school as “techies” and have a unique opportunity to have half of their courses with the same group of people for two years. The Technology Immersion program can be followed by several computer-oriented courses in grades 10-12.

Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek

Taverna is one of those restaurants that everyone just cannot get enough of. It is has been around Davie Village for a long time so they must be doing something right. Practically all year round there is a line-up although it is usually bigger in the summertime. Stepho’s serves traditional Greek food and the prices are great, between $7 and $10 per entree. Just a short walk up from Burrard and davie will bring you to Stepho’s with the baby blue facade. They have just opened a second location on Robson Street as well.

Transylvania Traditions Bakery

Narcisa’s love for good food has turned the Transylvanian Traditions Bakery sweet-shop into one of Vancouver’s premier dessert spots. On her arrival in Canada in 2007, Narcisa Stoian noticed the lack of traditional romanian sweets, which have always been a part of her childhood and her parents’ careers, and decided that Vancouver was the perfect place for her to share her love of romanian cuisine. Since the bakery opened in February 2008, it has been featured in the Vancouver Sun, Canadian Immigrants as well as many local dinner tables. Along with over a dozen preservative-free romanian cakes, Transylvanian Traditions is one of the only places in Canada to make Kurtos Colacs, a delicious, baked sweet dough spiral, dipped in caramel and walnuts.

There are several place to eat along this stretch of Davie Street. These are only a few so come on down and see for yourself.

At Gurkha Kitchen, you will enjoy a distinctive dining experience of fresh herbs and spices unique to the Himalayas, giving you an authentic Nepali flavour.

The heart of a Nepali meal consists of daal-bhaat, (lentils-rice) and achaar (chutney), complimented by other main and side dishes of meat and vegetables. For both lunch and dinner daalbhaat remains the staple in most Nepali households. Much less spicy in taste, the more traditional Nepali dishes are influenced by Tibetan and Chinese cuisines even though modern Nepali cuisine boasts a mix of both Tibetan and Indian styled cooking.

Vancouver European Deli This is a great place for all sorts of items. Their hummous is 10x better than the large store bought variety. It’s absolutely delicious. Try it with the Persian flatbread and some cut up vegetables! Other favourites to purchase are the dolmades (they’re vegetarian) and the spinach/ cheese Bureks. You will find products from England, Germany, Iran, Poland, Mexico, Indonesia, India, to name a few. They stock all the spices you can’t find at the grocery chains as well as fresh cheeses, olives and cured meats and a large range of canned and bottled goods. Favourites are the olives, flatbreads (super fresh pita for 89 cents on Wed and Fri), and Italian cured meats.

BELLISSIMA

With little knowledge of the fashion industry, husband and wife team, River and Serena, took a chance and started their own importing business back in 1973. Importing clothes turned out to be a much tougher job than expected, and after 1 year of chasing after shop owners for payment, they decided they’d had enough. Rather than quitting the fashion business all together, they decided to give it one more try and opened up a retail store. In 1975, the first Serena Fashions store opened on Pender Street in downtown Vancouver. In 1981, they joined up with Serena’s sister, Viviana, and expanded to Alberta. Over the years, Serena Fashions has grown from one store with 4 staff members to 22 stores throughout BC and Alberta, with over 200 employees.

Rodeo Drive North

Robsonstrasse was originally the German shopping district of Vancouver. In the sixties there were delicatessens, bakeries and restaurants as well as a European News store. Today, it is the city’s most fashionable shopping street. Aerie, Athleta, Zara, Cos and Herschel are just some of the big names on this urban shopping destination. Options for grabbing a bite abound. You can find everything from Schnitzel to Sushi along this bustling thoroughfare. It is also cruising central in the summertime, with cars and sidewalks filled with people enjoying the warm summer air. Rodeo Drive North is another name for Robson Street of today. Besides fashion Robson is home to hotels, specialty shops and a Whole Foods Market further down by Denman Street. There is also a Safeway at Denman.

The Howe Street Boys!

We had lots of fun at the Waverly. The Beatles came to Vancouver on August 22, 1964. Everyone was excited. I got a telephone call at the Waverly, “Can you do a Beatles style?” “Sure, when was your last haircut?” “Two or three weeks ago.” “Two months from today, you come down to see me and we will do the style.” “That long?” “Of course, your hair will be long by then and we can do something with it.” I was so fearless that I decided to leave the Waverly in September and open my own salon.

Lots of people dropped by the Waverly. Lots of stock-market tough guys like Jimmy Hill. He was one of the “Howe Street Boys” -- Harry Moll, Ted Turton, Murray Pezim, Lou Black, Basil Pantages etc. And Dave Davies (Big Dave). Jimmy Hill was a big guy very strong and a natural blond. They use to celebrate energetically at Moll’s Harry C’s eatery and Sugar Daddy’s, Charlie Brown’s and Sneaky Pete’s night spots back in the day. Hill barehandedly quelled three aggrieved motorcyclists. But his legendary feat came in September 1968, when he survived a reported three .38-calibre pistol shots to the body at the Georgia Hotel -- Hill says five -- from a Daniel Ceklay, who was later convicted of attempted murder. “He still has one [bullet] in him that gives him a slight limp,” says Hill’s long-divorced but still tender wife Beverly Hauff (In the words of Malcolm Parry).

My Riviera Hair Salon

1989 Jimmy and Beverly every Christmas rented the penthouse suite at the Acapulco Hilton

My partner in my new barber shop was Tony Farina, an Italian boy. Tony was really good at bringing in new clients whenever things slowed down. He asked his mother, “Can you loan us the money.” “Yes,” she said, “as long as George pays me back.” So we opened our new salon at 650 Seymour Street under the Bay parkade. I was surprised that I could find such a good location downtown. It was not too far from the Waverly. I didn’t want to open close to the Waverly but this spot came available. I gave Gus three weeks notice but he let me go immediately. He was more embarrassed than unhappy because someone had spread the word that he was gay. He thought that I had done it.

MY GREEK BARBER’S DIARY - GOOD GUYS AND BAD GUYS

Everyone dropped by our new salon. It went very well right from the start. All my co-workers from the Waverly wanted to come with us but I said no out of respect for Gus. We hired two barbers, one from England named Jimmy and one from Ireland named Kevin and we had most of the establishment coming to us. Thanks to Sid Golden, guys from the Jewish community became my clients: Max Fugman, Syd Belzberg, Roy Cantor, Joe Cohen, Irving Kates (I was invited to his house just a couple of weeks ago (September 29, 2013), to celebrate his 85th birthday); guys from the Richmond Golf & Country Club. Practically every CEO in town came by: Jimmy Pattison and Mr. Rogers of B.C. Sugar. We called it the Riviera Barber Shop. My partner liked the Buick Riviera and that is where we got the name. I had a painter paint a mural on the back wall of the salon. It cost us about $1,000. We were making $100 a week to start and later more. That was a lot of money in those days.

The Lion’s won the Grey Cup. It was a big deal. The office of the B.C. Lions was located a little further down Seymour where the entrance is to the Bay parking lot. We had all the players dropping in for a hair a haircut: Joe Capp, Lonnie Dennis, Dick Fouts, Willy Fleming and Tom Brown. Tom Larscheid, their color announcer (one who fills in with background material during breaks in the play), and Jim Cox both came down as well. Tom still comes into the salon. Later on Tom was the commentator for the Canucks games for thirty years.

I bought my first car in Vancouver in 1965 from Jim Pattison. It was a 1964 Pontiac Grand Parisienne. My wife and I walked into Jim Pattison Pontiac Buick at 18th & Main. Pattison was standing in an office at the back and when he saw us he came out and said to a salesman, “I will look after this young couple.” I was 30 years old. “That’s the car you are going to buy,” he says, like he could read my mind. He had all the confidence in the world. The car was white with a blue interior. I gave Mr. Pattison my business card and he started coming to see me regularly to have his hair cut. That is how I met Jim Pattison. He came down for six or seven years and then he stopped. He started coming in again a few years ago and he still comes in today.

Doug Hill has been a client of mine since the Waverly. He owned a public relations company. “George, you have to go see Herb Capozzi (B.C. Lions GM) and have him send the players here,” he said to me.

“They already come here.” “No, you have to go tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and see Herb in his office.” So I go. I walk in, the girls all smile.

“How are you today?” I said. I didn’t have a chance to ask for Herb. Before I knew it a photographer popped out from behind a life-size cutout of a football player and took my picture. In those days they had big flash bulbs that blinded you when they went off. I started to get scared because I couldn’t see. “Why, what I did?”

10 Most Interesting Things To Do

Take a walk down Robson Street to B.C. Place Stadium at False Creek and visit the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. Enjoy the beautiful views of False Creek while you take a walk around. Stop by our fabulous library at Homer Street. The design is similar to the Roman Coliseum. Now a tourist attraction as well as a library, it also has become the location for many movie shoots. Drop into the Vancouver Art Gallery at Hornby Street and see the latest exhibits. At the Emily Carr Exhibit, which is always on display, see this famous west coast First Nations artist’s works.

Take a stroll along Robson Street and enjoy the ambience, the people, the street performers, the colorful boutiques, eateries, the coffee shops and whatever else catches your eye.

Robson Street (aka Rodeo Drive North) is full of high end boutiques. Try Aerie, Athleta, Zara, Sephora, Cos, Ferragamo, Roots, Herschel and Landeree. They are all here!

A great chocolate store is located on Robson. It is called Rocky Mountain Chocolate and it is located just off Burrard. They have the best candy apples in

Vancouver.

On the corner of Thurlow Street and Robson is one of the busiest Starbucks in North America. It is a great place to sit and watch the world go by. There used to be another one across the street.

Lots of great places to eat on Robson. Cin Cin is probably Vancouver’s most popular restaurant. Also try Joe Forte’s, Coast, El Nido, and Milestones for your dining enjoyment.

A great cafe to try out is Foret Noir. There are lots of neww eateries and cafes all along Robson all the way down to Denman Street so check them out.

Hello Nori is another across from the new Paul’s Restaurant. Paul’s as well. Expect a line up as it is very popular but worth the wait.

On the other side of the street just before Dunsmuir are two favorite night spots The Swedish Touch and Brandis. In the next block is the downtown YWCA seen at the right and a little further the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art.. A little further along is the Hotel Le Soleil. GRANVILLE STREET

Our Entertainment District

Granville Street downtown use to be known as Theatre Row in the sixties. There were more neon signs on Granville Street than on any other street in Vancouver. That has changed over the years. Today Granville Street is being revitalized with new businesses coming in from the Granville Bridge up to Georgia Street. Big Box stores are common such as, Winners and Future Shop and the historical Hudson’s Bay Co. Department Store is still located on the corner of Georgia and Granville. Nordstom is on the corner of Robson up to Georgia. There is an entertainment factor offering good local pubs such as The Lennox Pub and Donnellan’s Irish Pub. There are also several night clubs located here for the 20 something crowd.

THE REFINERY As you’re staring down towards the Granville Street Bridge, the sun sets high in the sky to the West, reflecting a warm pink and vanilla glow over the Granville Entertainment District... it’s almost time for the lights to dim, the music starts bouncing, and the nightlife begins to emerge. This is the Granville Street routine, and it’s been like this for years, but we’ve added another element. The Refinery’s partial graffitti sign on the second floor lures curious diners and experienced cocktailers to something seldom seen on Granville Street. We welcome all of you to our home.

The Templeton – nostalgic, organic and delicious food served up in the heart of Vancouver’s entertainment district on Granville Row. It’s THE plate full of goodness that your mom used to make – or you wished she did!

Plug a quarter in the jukebox and enjoy breakfast made with free range eggs and natural bacon. Or bump in for dinner to catch a movie on the big screen and dig into a gourmet burger and an authentic milkshake.

Granville Street has long been Vancouver’s Entertainment District. In the forties and fifties and sixties it was known as Theatre Row. There were more neon signs on Granville Street than in any other part of the city. Now adays it is home to bars and eateries, as well as several night clubs. The two longest running entertainment venues on Granville are the Commodore Ballroom and the Orpheum Theatre.

The Mexican Antojitos y Cantina was born on April 2011 in the belly of the Entertainment district of Vancouver, to provide locals and visitors alike with a true Mexican culinary and drinking experience.

Owned by two young passionate Mexican ladies, its great food and charismatic and genuine service delighted the Mexican community first and soon captivated the rest of Vancouver’s foodies who were craving for excellent authentic Mexican dishes. Homemade sauces, fresh ingredients, and only the best quality meats, produce and dairy products are the vertebrae of its menu. The ¨sazon¨ - the distinctive flavor touch- of the owner-chef, is considered by many homesick Mexicans the best in town.

The largest selection of tequilas and Mexican beers –and their subsequent related drinks- in town round up the perfect meal for each occasion.

The Edge Social Grille & Lounge is the newest arrival to the bustling heart of downtown Vancouver between Yaletown and the recently revamped Granville Street area. The Edge offers a large, modern yet comfortable room with both dining and lounge seating as well as a generous outdoor patio that runs along the front of the restaurant, set deep into the large street front courtyard. We proudly invite you to experience our tantalizing globally inspired menu with a distinct focus on sourcing fresh local products where possible. The Library Square Project was the largest capital project ever undertaken by the City of Vancouver. The decision to build the project came after a favourable public referendum in November 1990. The City then held a design competition to choose a design for the new building. The design by Moshe Safdie and DA Architects was by far the most radical design and yet was the public favourite.

The one square block project also includes an attached office high-rise, retail shops, restaurants, and underground public parking. The Library building has a rooftop garden designed by Vancouver landscape architect Cornelia Oberlander.

Somebody touched me on my shoulder from behind.

“Don’t worry George, I’m Herb.” They knew how many season tickets they had sold, ninteen thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine. I was the twenty thousandth person to walk through the door. I had no idea! They gave me two season tickets. They put my name with a picture of me (see page 8), in The Sun and The Province for two weekends in a row. The B.C. Lions and the horse races were the only professional sports in Vancouver at the time. The Canucks were still a minor league team (Herb would assume control of the Canucks in 1971 after they turned pro to keep them in Vancouver). In that same year I went from four chairs to ten chairs. It was huge publicity. I really believe you have to be lucky as well as smart. I didn’t realize that I had been set-up until almost fifty years later.

There was a huge stock promoter named Lou Black (Louie) who lived in Montreal. He had his hair cut by a stylist who knew me. “Do you know anyone in Vancouver who can do styles?” he asked the stylist.

“I will send you to a guy who just moved to Vancouver. He is a way better barber than me.” Louie tried to find me here. He telephoned the barber’s association.

This guy was a promoter. He could promote anything. He liked my work. He sent me so many people from Howe Street, I couldn’t believe it! His former partner, Lou Wolfin, still comes in today at 82 years young. At that time Lou promoted a stock called Pyramid. He gave me an option on ten thousand shares. I was to pay him for the stock when I

sold it. That is how much he thought of me. It was a lot of money. I had no knowledge of the stock market. The stock went from $.65 in three weeks to $3 so I sold. I made $20,000. I ran down to see Lou. “Here is your cheque.” “Where did you get the money?” “I sold the stock.” “Why did you do that? You should have called me first.” It wound up going up to $23 but I was happy to a certain extent because we make our own luck.

I went and bought my first house in Mackenzie Heights. The fellow who sold it to me was Gary Averbach of Belmont Properties (Today he is their CEO). He is one of the Golden family. Sid Golden is the nephew and partner of Lou Averbach, Gary’s father. They all still come down for a haircut. I paid $19,000 for a double corner lot. It was at 21st and Blenheim, northeast corner. I gave them $9,000 as a down payment on the house and I had a $65 a month mortgage. I bought a brand new Oldsmobile Delta 88. I was probably one of the first Greeks in Vancouver to have a color television. It was round in those days. We did a lot of renovations to the house. My second daughter, Anna Maria (we call her Marianna) was born in that house in 1966. We lived there from 1965 to 1969. I sold it for $36,000 because my wife wasn’t feeling well and wanted to move and sell quickly.

A Trendy Urban Community

Yaletown is located on False Creek at the water’s edge in downtown Vancouver and was once a rundown warehouse district. Its rebirth started in the late 1980’s, and it has gradually transformed into a trendy urban community comprising a mix of residential, office, restaurants, boutiques, cafes, and more. The elevated, brick-

paved loading docks with their cantilever canopies now house sidewalk tables, providing shade and shelter for the patrons of the many dining and drinking establishments. What was I to do? Jimmy Hill came over one day. He says, “Are you going away?” “No, why?” “I have some money. Can you keep it for me for awhile?” “Sure.” It was a lot of money. I did something really stupid because I didn’t know what to do with that much money. He didn’t come back that night so I thought, “I’ll put the money in the drawer. I didn’t want to take it with me. I locked the door and left. At midnight I woke up in a sweat, “What have I done?” I remembered what my father once told me, ‘The key is for the good people. Bad people will open it anyway.’ I got up and went downtown and entered through the back door. The money was still there so I stayed the rest of the night. The next day when Jimmy showed up I said, “You son of a gun.” I didn’t know what to say. If anything had happened to the money, how could I have explained that I had nothing to do with it? I was lucky! In those days I could have bought five houses with no mortgage with the money. Today, the houses would cost 10 million.

Our Downtown Playground

Surrounded by marinas and enriched by views, Granville Island is located on the south shore of False Creek, in Downtown Vancouver. Granville Island is connected to the city by a causeway, epitomizing the West Coast outdoorsy lifestyle. Day and night, it’s a thriving warren of shops, artist’s studios, restaurants,

www.michaeldeanjewellery.com theatres, nightclubs and galleries. It’s easy to think that False Creek has always been the watery playground on the inner city. Most evenings, primarily from April to October, the sheltered finger off Burrard Inlet teems with a mix of canoes, dragon boats, kayaks, sculls, sailboats, tugboats, and stinkpots. At our in-store workshop in the heart of Vancouver on Granville Island, we use top grain vegetable tanned cowhide to create belts, bags and accessories for women and men. Hartman Leather is proud to sell finely crafted hand-made leather products to a local and international clientele.

Accomplished leather artisan Dave Hartman began working with leather in the 1970s, creating unique leather backgammon boards as a hobby. Dave fell in love with the craft, and dedicated himself to mastering the techniques and skills that leatherwork requires. He sold his first backgammon board in downtown Vancouver on Hornby Street, outside the Candy Store nightclub.

STUDIO

13 FINE ART is the studio and gallery of visual artist, Alice Parmelee Rich. Alice’s semi-abstract acrylic paintings capture the colour and energy of the coastal environment. Using plentiful layers of colour and undulating brushstrokes, Alice creates what she describes as ‘elementalscapes’ —painterly, abstract compostions which subtly suggest organic land and sea forms.

Alice Rich graduated from the University of British Columbia and the Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Her work is included in corporate and private collections throughout Canada, the US, and Europe. 1315 Railspur Alley, Granville Island, BC, V6H 4G9, 604.731.0068, Daily 11am – 6pm, closed Tuesdays, www.studio13fineart.com

Beaver Pond Creative Soon after moving from the UK to Vancouver in 1987, Hilary picked up a paintbrush as a way of getting to know her new hometown. She had no idea then that she would be spending the next thirty years recording Vancouver’s everchanging neighbourhoods and vistas in vibrant watercolour and Indian Ink. Her early paintings, which focused on the city’s historic buildings and local haunts, may have given way to wider panoramas of the city and its environs, but her images remain just as colourful and detailed.

96

peter kiss gallery The work is predominantly wood-based 2 1/2 and 3 dimensional sculpture which is finished with a variety of painting processes. The 2 1/2 dimensional work is wall-hung landscape and abstract imagery, painted on built up layers of wood. The 3D work is mostly figurative.

The gallery is closed but you can contact Peter Kiss and Tania Gleave on their website. Peter’s work is 2, 2 1/2 and 3 dimensional wood sculpture which combines humour with social commentary. Tania’s work often combines oil, inks, beeswax and pastels to create colour studies with subtle tonal and textured variations.

MONIKA SADRYNA

Born in Köln, Germany, I trained as a classical dancer, choreographer, and model for 20 years. I always felt clothes were my second skin, an expression of my mood and I designed my own pieces to reflect that on stage.

I took this passion and opened Sadryna Design in Hamburg, Germany in 1997. I relocated to Granville Island, Vancouver, British Columbia in 2003, where I create and manufacture each piece from my Railspur Alley Studio.

I believe involving the client is important as I strive to reflect and capture their personality in each design.

Aurum-Argentum Goldsmiths is the creative and artistic workspace of Pernilla Ahrnstedt, Kristen Jones and Gisela Kuckertz. What brought the three goldsmiths together was the desire to create truly artistic jewellery. Granville Island is the perfect place for a studio producing work that goes beyond the commercial approach to jewellery making. The jeewellery is made following classic metal smithing traditions: alloying the metal,

pouring an ingot and rolling or drawing it into plate or wire for forming by hand. The elements are then pierced, shaped and soldered together. Once assembled, the piece is given its final finish.

Pernilla, Kristen and Gisela each have a strong background in fine art and design that sets the tone for their different styles. The collection runs from simple wedding bands to gorgeous opal, diamond and pearl chokers. The more eccentric peces include a bejewelled salt and papper shaker and an antler headdress festooned with silver ivy.

Katherine McLean invites you to visit her working studio in Railspur Alley on Granville Island. “As a contemporary artist, my work is fundamentally representational although it drifts into abstraction where shapes dissolve and melt into new colours and movements. I am not an abstract artist because I am drawn to an overall experience that anchors us to our world in many tangible ways. For me, the leading actor in this endeavour is colour and light as I think these carry the emotion with which we define and appreciate our world. I do not rely on colour theory, at least not consciously, but instead, I simply love colour. Matisse said, “Seek the strongest colour effect possible; the content is of no importance”. He also said “ With colour one obtains an energy that seems to stem from witchcraft.” I constantly seek that energy and it feels so much more important than the content. My sculpture medium is clay and coloured glazes and I choose the challenging medium of encaustic (hot beeswax and resin pigmented with oil paint and dried pigments) for my paintings.

Pirate Adventures Canada’s objectives are to provide for a fun, interactive theatre based production/adventure program in the Vancouver area waterways. These packages are designed and built around a pirate motif, utilizing a 50-foot tri-hulled boat, retrofitted into the profile and layout of a classic pirate ship.

Our aim is to tap into the child’s imagination, transforming him or her into a pirate complete with pirate fashions, face painting, and pirate name. Our major marketing motto is “be a kid with your kid”, our focus is families having a great time together.

For 75 minutes, our stable pirate vessel would navigate the local waters, providing non-stop activities, discovering treasure maps, solving the mysteries, recovering sunken treasure, fending off “bad” pirates with our water cannons, and generally living the adventures of a pirate for a moment in time.

It Ain’t Over Until Faye Leung the Hat Lady Sings

The Faye and Dean Leung Story!

How they changed the faces of Canada

Dean and Faye Leung were pioneers in blending the Chinese society with the Caucasian society in Vancouver during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. They both fought the decades old discrimination in Canada against the Chinese and other nminorities. Together, they accomplished many things in the fields of banking, housing, education and probably most importantly in the field of immigtration category reform. If you are from an immigrant family who came to Canada after 1967, chances are you are here because of Faye Leung. It can probably be said that Canada is multicultural today because of the efforts of Faye Leung.

Faye was also a pioneer in establishing economic ties between Canada and China starting back in 1980, through to today, when China began to open its doors after

126

the Cutlural Revolution. She was the first Canadian businesswoman to be invited to China by Deng Xiaoping’s government.

The last chapter in her biography is an overview of the Fantasy Gardens boondoggle which saw the first premier in Commonwealth history forced to resign due to his own corruption. Faye is beaten up and smeared by the premier’s lawyers, then the media and made the scapegoat to keep the premier out of jail. A more in-depth look at this entire affair can be read in this book.

MOVIE: The Ghosts of Chinatown

INVESTMENT: $1 Million

INVESTORS NEEDED: 400

ABOUT: This is an opportunity for small investors to get involved for the first time in a Johnny Depp movie. Ten of Johnny Depp’s movies have either grossed over $1 Billion worldwide or grossed above $500 Million.

CONDITIONS: No money will exchange hands until a producer is on board (Ron Howard) the lead actors all signed (Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep and Sandra Oh) and a studio on board that has a distributor and can guarantee theatrical release (Disney).

RETURN: This budget covers Production $100 Million, Distribution $100 Million, Marketing $100 Million and Actor’s Residuals (cash amount the leads receive after production) $100 Million. Because we are raising the entire cost, this group will be first in line to receive compensation.

THE TRANSACTION: Once we have the investment needed, a Literary Agent in London, England will be engaged to handle all aspects of the transaction; getting a producer on board, the producer getting the actors on board and the studio. The producer will assemble his team, set a schedule and a budget and work will begin on a script.

SYNOPSIS: Faye Leung finds herself on Pender Street in front of the newly opened Chinatown Storytelling Centre. She sees visions of people she used to know going into the various businesses and they see her but say nothing. Unknowingly, she has stumbled into a parallel dimension called Ghost World. It is only for ghosts. The Office has sent down a good wizard (Meryl Streep) to rally the ghosts of Chinatown for an attack on City Hall to get the City to give Chinatown protected heritage status so it won’t disappear. The Mayor wants to sell off the buildings to developers. To read more go to our website: www.warfleetpress.com.

HISTORY

A MIDCENTURY MARVEL

Opened in 1958 to replace its predecessor just a ten-minute walk north, this International Style building helped to power Vancouver’s postwar population boom.

THE POST OFFICE

Tech-driven and Transformative

This building is a city block-sized monument to the height of twentieth-century design, technology, and infrastructure. Once the largest building in Vancouver and the largest welded steel structure in the world, the Main Post Office served a rapidly changing city. It had ramps, chutes, elevators, and tunnels. It even had a 730-meter underground conveyor belt system connecting it to nearby rail hubs and waterways like Waterfront Station. Its McCarter Nairne & Partners design stands as the most noteworthy example of the International Style in all of western Canada—an architectural movement that prioritizes functional flexibility across a large volume of space, smooth exterior planes, and modern mix of materials like granite, marble, terra cotta, cast concrete, terrazzo, and aluminium.

THE POST

Its construction marked a hinge point for a city on the verge of a boom: while it was in service, the metro area’s population more than doubled, from about 600,000 to more than 1.3 million. www.thepostvancouver. com/history

TODAY

Loblaw has mastered building grocery stores in heritage buildings, with one notable example being the 88,000 square foot Loblaw store in the former Maple Leaf Gardens in downtown Toronto. Elements from the experiential Toronto store, which have been “perfected”, will be introduced in the new downtown Vancouver Loblaw CityMarket flagship.

The Post’s Loblaw CityMarket will become the largest grocery store on the downtown Vancouver peninsula. 658 Homer @ Georgia
