Welcome to the Neighbourhoods of Vancouver DOWNTOWN edition. This guide points out and writes about the different neighbourhoods of Downtown Vancouver. It is for both locals and visitors alike and offers a special welcome to new Vancouverites as well.

How often have you heard someone say, “Oh, I drive by that neighbourhood all the time but I was there 20 years ago and nothing has changed.” Well, let me tell you things have changed all over Metro Vancouver. The neighbourhoods are buzzing with activity and new developments and of course great local history.

We will let you know who is new in each neighbourhood and also let you know if your old favorites are still around. We will tell you where interesting neighbourhoods have sprung up that you may not know about. Do you know these neighbourhoods Emery Barnes Park, Crosstown and Railtown? We call them ‘Boutique Neighbourhoods.’ There is so much to discover right here in our own back yard.

Having been born and raised in Vancouver and a heritage writer, I feel qualified to pass on what I remember from my youth about our great city and about the great changes we are continuing to see to this day.

This guide is meant to be kept for a year and to be taken with you as you visit a different neighbourhood each week or weekend as time allows. If you are a tourist, we are sure you will enjoy it too!

So get out and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best

Third Largest Chinatown in North America

This is North America’s third largest Chinatown. Mandarin and Cantonese are

the mother tongues in 30 per cent of Vancouver homes, makes Chinese the largest “minority” ethnic group. There are lots of interesting markets with many varieties of fresh and dried seafood and mushrooms. You’ll also find inexpensive houseware and traditional Chinese medicine. During the summer, on weekend evenings, Keefer and Pender Streets become a busy openair night market. If you have time for a leisurely meal, try dim sum at one of the many small restaurants. It is an inexpensive, multi-course culinary adventure. Besides the businesses on Pender Street, try East Georgia for some interesting newcomers and oldsters.

Welcome to Spain in Chinatown! We offer a casual authentic tapas experience. Along with Basque inspired Pinchos we also specialize in ceviche, tortilla espanola and a Catalan style a la carte menu. We take reservations online for group and private dining and also provide an Omakase style service on request where you simply leave it to us!

A night of Pintxos typically means crowded standing room bars with people clamoring for the house special. La Boqueria has taken effort to execute a marriage of the stimulating Pintxos bar tasting room experience with the social ambiance of a 20’s lost generation inspired European bistro. Never overcomplicated or contrived. The food is prepared quickly and presented right away. Drawing from the Basque philosophy of fine ingredients and local we aim to elevate Pintxos and present refined simplicity with our dishes. Flavors are developed and concentrated into miniature ingredient driven experiences. Our namesake is the Mercat de Sant Joseph de la Boqueria, a historical market in Barcelona home to amazing fresh food vendors and casual places to eat.

Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie

The neon sign puts you in a film noir set in vintage Chinatown. Inside, pin-ups in the bathroom and whitewashed knives on the dining room wall wink to the storied past. But look more closely: Bao Bei is all 2010 – it’s taken this long to get such a fun take on Chinese dining. In the kitchen, chef Joel Watanabe (of

Bin 942 and Araxi) homespins ingredients from close by with flavours from far away, irreverently and intelligently reminding us that comfort food doesn’t have to be white-bread. Egg noodles, flat and square, float in a deep-bodied broth with braised Pemberton beef, sharp watercress and organic tomatoes blistered to pull out their inherent sweetness, an inky sauce of cilantro and shallots on the side. A sumptuous shao bing sandwich, which puts pillowy pork, Asian pear, pickled onion and mustard greens on sesame bread, reveals why the napkins, like the chopsticks, are self-serve. www.enroute.aircanada.com

17 Chinatown

The Chinese Cultural Centre

The builders of Chinatown were the pioneers. They built an oasis outside Vancouver as a vision to their lifestyle. It isn’t so important that the pioneers built Chinatown but that they were visionaries. They were the first group to celebrate their lifestyle in Canada by building Chinatown. No one seems to know who actually designed Chinatown. We don’t know much about who built the distinctive buildings and the kind of impact they had on people at the time. Many buildings belonged to the different associations but who actually built them, no one knows. They were outside the tradition of the Caucasian builders of the time. It was a new world emerging in the wilderness and no one expected Chinatown to face the troubles it encountered.

Outside Chinatown are the sound of the steam trains pulling logs from the vast hinterland of B.C. to the CPR ships, the chugging of locomotives as passengers traversed the Rocky Mountains on the way to their new homes in Vancouver, the street cars making their way up Hastings Street to uptown along Granville Street to Georgia where the venerable Hudson’s Bay Co, stands and then turning right down Georgia taking passengers to Stanley Park on a sunny day, the boats coming and going in Coal Harbor and the industrial waste of generations of industry desecrating the banks of False Creek, these were all signs of the new culture makers.

But in Chinatown, soon there were no signs of any Chinese culture makers. Building had stopped, just the signs of an oppressed people trying to survive. The buildings were allowed to decay due to lack of funds and the new culture makers outside their door tried to run it over with bulldozers every chance they got. But there was a new breed of Chinese that followed the pioneers, born of the freedom brought by enfranchisement and fueled by energetic newcomers like Faye and Dean Leung who were familiar with the problems of the past. This new breed as it gathered strength and flexed its muscle; it too looked around for a way to create a monument to its lifestyle within the confines of Chinatown.

“The land at 50 West Pender Street would be a good address for a Chinese Community Centre,” Andy Livingston said to me one day. Andy was always enthusiastic. He was the Parks Board Chairman in the early 1970s.

“Haven’t you got anything better to do, Andy, than come into my office every day?” I used to give him a hard time. He and his wife Maria often came to our beautiful home in Oakridge as well.

“You really should consider that location on Pender Street for a new community centre,” Andy repeated. He mentioned it often. So I called Wong Kung Wai and Lilac Chen of the Lotus Garden Restaurant, which was very famous and popular, and Henry Wong of the powerful, Simon Fraser University Teachers Union. The Honorable Les Peterson also got involved. So did Grace McCarthy who both supported and encouraged us. I can see them all to this day in our spacious, oriental style living room. The meetings went on for days and months.

“A Chinese Community Centre would be a good place to bring all Chinese together and show that the Chinese are truly becoming a part of Canadian society.” Oh, they were such ’sweet words!

Andy’s idea was a good one.

“Everybody likes the Ding Ho Restaurant,” Dean said. It was on land in Chinatown that was very historical. That was 50 West Pender Street. “That property is restricted (not to be sold to Chinese, East Indians or Jews).”

That’s what I told Dean after I made some inquiries. There were several other businesses nearby: the famous Marco Polo Restaurant and Night Club on Columbia and the Chinese Book Store, which was small but the only one of its kind and Foo’s, Ho Ho Restaurant, which was a landmark was also on a nearby corner. “They’ve all been around for many years,” I said. And all around, on all sides, was downtown Vancouver.

“All the businesses in the area must be leasing the land,” Dean said, motioning with his hand. “It’s the only way they could be there. The Chinese isolation meant we didn’t know these things. We’ve always had to be careful who came in here. If strangers came into Chinatown, they wouldn’t be given the time of day. This isolation has been good in a way. It’s given us a strong sense of family, honor, and courage.” Dean was very smart. After we did some more checking, we discovered that the site we wanted belonged to the B.C. Government (16). We were in luck!

It was now 1972 and the NDPs (New Democratic Party), Dave Barrett had just become the new premier.

“We should make a presentation to Barrett’s new, government asking to buy this historical site for our new centre,” it was decided at one of our meetings. I’m not sure if Barrett knew that the Chinese had a strong sense of family, honor, and courage but two weeks later he asked Alex MacDonald, his Attorney General, to remove the discriminatory restrictions on 50 West Pender Street. Barrett told Alex McDonald,

“Tell them we will agree to sell the whole of 50 West Pender Street to the Chinese associations for 1 dollar, but they must have all the associations, big and small, on board to make it happen.” Maybe he wanted to see what would happen if the Chinese were given control of their (continued of page 22)

destiny. In those days there were about forty Chinese associations, benevolent and otherwise if you included fraternities and societies. There are even more today. There was a lot of arguing and fighting between them all, direct talk as to what to name the new centre.

“We have to come up with a name,” Dean said.

As the President of the Chinese National Benevolent Association of Canada, Dean, my wise husband came up with an idea and called a meeting of representatives from each association, and they made him, chairman (17). Everyone attended.

“You don’t have to argue anymore,” Dean said, “We’ll name it the Chinese Cultural Centre. This name, speaks for all.” With the name agreed upon the government sold the land for 1 dollar to the associations, including fraternities and societies. But we didn’t have the money to build the centre!

Working together was the key. There were constant meetings of the many Chinese associations to find a way to work together to raise the necessary funds to build the Centre after Barrett’s contribution.

“Each Chinese association, new and old, has to make a contribution as well as raise funds, if we’re going to be successful,” Dean said. We organized a committee made up of members of each association and launched a fundraising campaign. Dean’s secretary was Sam Shew Cheung who had worked with Dean for many years. “Sam, drive to every Chinese grocery store and Chinese restaurant, throughout Vancouver, asking for donations, of any size,” Dean told him. Sam was all over the place at all hours of the day and night. Some nights you’d see Sam go by ten times in the darkness with the old Vancouver moon above. If someone was following you, it was likely Sam.

Something amazing was happening! The Chinese were starting to get in charge of their destiny. It was becoming a science to them; they knew what to do so well. There were still a lot of knock-down arguments, often without foundation, lots of direct talk between the many associations and the Chinese community, at large. An argument is war. Everyone wanted to get involved, young and old.

“All you younger people want to do is fight,” Dean said. Then the REDS started to get involved. There were many Chinese-Canadians who were procommunist. With some people, anger is in the heart. There was no way we could keep the cultural centre for ourselves. There was a lot of politics. The sound of fighting, moaning, and groaning could be heard downtown all over Chinatown.

“Watch out for the REDS!” To white folk, they thought it was the tongs (secret societies) that were responsible. It wasn’t just the excitement of it. It was the symbolism of the Chinese fight against the establishment for their independence. Various interest groups tried to take over the cultural centre, which was supposed to be for the people. One group succeeded. We were warned.

“The Reds want to take over all the Chinese associations, not only here in Vancouver, but across Canada,” we were told. They infiltrated many organizations swiftly and silently getting their people (who they could control), into high positions The Chinese Cultural Centre became a symbol of liberation from the old establishment for the Chinese in post-postwar Vancouver.

CHINATOWN

Night life in Chinatown was such a big thing, I discovered, that despite the blackouts life went on. Everyone still wanted to enjoy themselves and they found ways to do it. All eyes were on Chinatown during the war years as everyone needed a break from the horrors of the war and Chinatown and its many restaurants, filled the bill. Lots of sailors and soldiers frequented Chinatown when off duty to have a good time. What was meant by a good time was often questionable. It could mean anything from having dinner, to getting drunk to womanizing, to visiting the gambling joints and other such dens of iniquity to getting into fights with the locals.

During the war, there were two famous restaurants in Chinatown. One was, as mentioned, the Bamboo Terrace at 155 East Pender Street (in the heart of Chinatown), with its brilliant green bamboo neon sign. It was featured on many of the postcards and photos of Chinatown. It was, “The Chinese Restaurant in Greater Vancouver.” People came from all over and lined up to get in. The other famous restaurant was the W. K. Gardens dine and dance supper club located a few doors down. Harold and Wilbert Lim owned W.K. No liquor allowed. No liquor of any kind was for sale in restaurants and nightclubs because there were no licensed premises, except beer parlors. Beer parlors had separate ‘Gents’ and ‘Ladies’ entrances. Nothing was open on Sundays not department stores, or even movie theatres. Because nothing was open on Sundays, Chinese banquets were always held on Sundays in Chinatown. Everyone would “BYOB,” which meant to bring your own bottle and hide it under the table in a brown paper bag. The liquor helped to ease the nerves in wartime because the sailors and soldiers who came into Chinatown to drink and get drunk, got into fights with “ching chong” chinaman, as they called us. My Uncle Bill had his ear bitten off by a sailor. My mother and father would go into a tizzy if there was a late night telephone call out of fear that Uncle Bill had gotten into another fight. Other restaurants included the Chungking Chinese Restaurant, the famous Sai Woo Restaurant, Mings, Yen Lock, the Hong Kong Cafe, the Royal Cafe and more. The Golden Coin Cafe served the best ever original apple tarts, butter tarts and other Chinese delicacies. Wo Fat Chinese Bakery had ‘egg cake’ (Kai-Done-Ko), almond cookies and all the various pastries needed for a traditional Chinese wedding. Chinatown was an exciting place to grow up in those days.

black church, the African Methodist Episcopal Fountain Chapel, were located there. As such, Hogan’s Alley was the first and last neighbourhood in Vancouver with a substantial concentrated black population. A possible reason these families settled there was because of the close proximity to the train stations since sleeping car porters were predominantly black men. A 1957 study by the City of Vancouver Planning Department described the black population of Strathcona as such: “The Negro population, while numerically small, is probably a large proportion of the total Negro population in Vancouver. Their choice of this area is partly its proximity to the railroads where many of them are employed, partly its cheapness and partly the fact that it is traditionally the home of many non-white groups.”

Prior to 1935, Hogan’s Alley was a red light district, owing to Mayor L. D. Taylor’s “open town policy,” which was that police resources would be concentrated on major crimes, not victimless vice crimes. As a result of this policy, illegal drinking establishments, brothels, and gambling dens operated here, as they did in various other non-white sections of town like Chinatown and Japantown, but also in non-ethnically defined areas nearby such as Gastown, East Hastings and lower Mount Pleasant. This policy also earned Taylor a reputation for being soft on vice crime and he faced accusations of corruption. This was the basis of his electoral defeats in 1929 and 1934. Hogan’s Alley long outlived Taylor’s career in civic politics until it faced demolition to make way for a freeway.

Before American Can in 1910, it was home to a series of brothels run by Madame Dolly Darlington. Today it is home to a group of businesses intent on making it a design destination. The past can still be seen in the wood cobblestones that pop up on the streets in places, but with businesses like Vancouver Urban Winery and the venerable Railtown Cafe There are several new designer outlets it looks like set to open this summer. Payless Meats has been a part of the Powell street neighborhood since 1954. It is, as far as we know, the oldest butcher shop in the Greater Vancouver area with only three management changes to date. With 3500 square feet of space and a large selection of meats at low prices, the store has been an accommodating and integral part of the block for over half a century.

As old as Payless Meats is, it now seems to be in itself, a little part of history. Many patrons have been coming to the shop for a number of years, some for even more than twenty. Some customers come everyday, some every once in a while. Recently, an old U.S. Navy officer stopped by the neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised to find that the store still existed. He recalled visiting the very same store back in 1965, when he was 19 years old, and his navy ship anchored iatthe waterfront docks inVancouver.

The products sold in Payless Meats are not necessarily the most expensive cuts of meat. However, the modest prices cater to the people of this neighborhood better than any large commercial supermarket. Customers always comment on how they enjoy coming to this store and walking out of it feeling like they have gotten a good deal. Payless Meats has a decade old specialty meats package that will stock your freezer up for a week or a month, (continued on page 30)

Japantown, Little Yokohama or Little Tokyo

Japantown, Little Yokohama, or Little Tokyo is an old neighbourhood in Vancouver, Canada, British Columbia, north of Chinatown, that once had a concentration of Japanese immigrants. During World War II when Japanese Canadians had their property confiscated and were interned (see Japanese Canadian internment), Japantown ceased to be a distinct Japanese ethnic area. Although some Japanese returned after the war, the community never revived. The area is now part of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Along Powell Street, a few remnants of the former Japanese neighbourhood still exist. The Vancouver Buddhist Church, formerly the Japanese Methodist Church, still exists at 220 Jackson Street (at Powell), as does the Vancouver Japanese Language School and Japanese Hall at 475 and 487 Alexander Street (at Jackson), which was established in 1906.

Until the boom in Japanese restaurants in the 1980s, two restaurants on Powell Street were among the only Japanese dining in the city.

Oppenheimer Park in this area is the site for the annual two day Powell Street Festival which began in 1977. It is held every August, in the first weekend of the month, and is a community celebration of Japanese heritage as well as the alternative and street culture of the Downtown Eastside.

Payless Meats continued: little snacks to get on the fly or while you are waiting for the bus outside, and sometimes wild meats during game season.

Payless Meats is a discreet icon of the Powell street community. It’s presence on the block may be inconspicuous but it’s modesty and continuance makes it a part of the regular everyday stop for people of this community.

A walk along Powell Street, east of Main Street, will bring you back to the beginning of Railtown and the venerable Ask For Luigi on the corner. A little further north back on Railway Street is the always good Railtown cafe, where the locals go!

The Original City Site

Established the same year that Canada became a nation, Gastown grew into Canada’s third largest city and one of its most cosmopolitan. But the Gastown district today retains its historic charm, independent spirit and distinctiveness. There is no mistaking Gastown for any other area of Vancouver, or of Canada for that matter. 1920’s: Gastown grew and prospered, as did the rest of the City of Vancouver. But good times couldn’t last forever. Depression Years: Gastown fell on hard times and deteriorated into a stereotypical skid road area until the 1960s. Today, Gastown is back with new fashion, dining and galleries.

Robba Da Matti

Do you remember your last vacation in Italy?

You may have stepped off the tourist path and found a little hole-in-the-wall where only the locals ate and you were welcomed in like one of the family. It was probably one of the best meals you’ve ever had. You can relive that experience every time you come to Robba Da Matti.

We specialize in fresh homemade pastas. They are family recipes passed down from generation to generation & classic internationally known dishes. Haven’t been to Italy yet? Robba Da Matti is the closest you’ll get to Italy without a passport!

Jules Bistro Emmanuel Joinville’s remarkable little spot in Gastown hits all the right notes, conjuring hearty, unpretentious French bistro fare in a room transported straight from Le Marais. Start with the sizeable terrine de campagne with grape chutney before moving to the palatefondling beef tenderloin in a red wine sauce or the duck confit with white beans and shallot compote. Still going? Finish with a vanilla bean crème brûlée. Kronenbourg 1664 on tap and a daily three-course table d’hôte (greens, steak or salmon with frites, and chocolate terrine) for $26 make this room as affordable as it is authentic. Highly recommended.

L’Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler’s Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver’s first jail. Originally buttressed to the city’s main butchery and meat packing district, the name L’Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood’s colourful past.

Serving up French-influenced West Coast fare in the heart of Vancouver’s Gastown. Dinner 7 nights a week and brunch on weekends.

Our beloved private dining facilities are completely separate from our restaurant dining room, but the décor is an extension of our celebrated brick and beam style, with sleek, industrial glass and steel accents.

Anatoli Souvlaki has been a fixture at the foot of Lonsdale for over 30 years, with a reputation steeped in exceptional quality and authentic Greek tradition. These familiar flavours have been reimagined in Yaletown with the opening of The Greek by Anatoli. Brothers Iani and Alexi Makris, sons of Anatoli’s founding family, have joined partner Daniel Bergman to open the doors of their second restaurant.

With locations in Yaletown and Gastown, The Greek is a reinterpretation of the North Shore’s iconic Anatoli Souvlaki.

Woodward’s Heritage Building

The building was built in 1903 by Charles Woodward as the second location for the Woodward’s department store. Woodward’s pioneered the concept of one-stop shopping; the store included a food floor which was at the time North America’s largest supermarket, household items, men’s and women’s fashion, and provided cheque cashing, travel booking and other services. The store was well-known for carrying a large variety of goods that were not available anywhere else. The store soon became a feature attraction in Vancouver, and it expanded over 12

final size of 12 storeys. It occupied approximately 2/3 of of the city block. The popularity of Woodward’s attracted many other businesses to the area.

In 1944 the landmark “W” was installed on the top of the building on a 25 metre replica of the Eiffel Tower, replacing a pre-war searchlight-beacon which had until then been the building’s hallmark. The beacon, which was visible at night from as far away as Abbotsford and Mission, was shut down at the beginning of World War II because of its potential use as a landmark for aerial attacks.

A day at Brioche begins

with the clatter of baking pans and the aroma of fresh baked goods and ‘bloody good coffee’. This tantalizing scent lures in an eclectic mix of clientele from the surrounding studios and businesses. Architects, artists, models, filmmakers and other professionals trickle through the stone archway eager to start their day with the best pastries in Vancouver - made fresh daily in house! Many leave with fresh loaves of bread for home or bakery baskets for friends, colleagues or clients.

the heavens open up and spill forth an assortment of casual gourmet favorites including Sicilian panini on housebaked bread, authentic Italian pizza, eggplant parmigiana and seafood salad. Aside from the favorites, each day a variety of mouth-watering entrees, soups and salads are born in the busy Brioche kitchen.

Zwada DESIGN is a residential interior design studio and an intimate home furnishings store, located in Vancouver, founded in 2007 by Don Zwarych and Kyo Sada. While studio work forms the cornerstone of the business, ZWADA home also provides exquisitely crafted custom furniture, home furnishings and florals which are showcased throughout the store as an ever evolving exploration in design. The company’s vision was born out of a love for home and all that it encompasses. This means beautiful spaces, filled with family, friends and food. We believe homes should reflect the people who live in them. Like a great written work, great interiors tell a story. Our work involves a true collaboration between designer and client. Working with both local and international clients, whether it be a downtown high-rise condominium, country estate or urban loft, we approach each project with the same care and attention to detail.

More and more shops and eateries are moving down to this part of Pender Sreet. Pender use to be the heart of downtown along with Hastings Street but over the past few decades as retail has shifted to Robson Street, things have become very layed back on Pender. This layed back quality is now in demand and Pender is thriving once again as are several other streets nearby. Between the Hastings Hertiage District and Gastown there is lots to see.

The wonderful heritage buildings are still all there they just have new tenants. Come down and see the area around Victory Square and relive the glory days of Vancouver’s old downtown.

Finch’s Tea & Coffee House Sandwich bars are becoming more and more popular in Vancouver, and as you can see from the pictures, Finch’s are quite welcomed by the Vancouverites during lunch hours. My friend and I did not expect the long time up when we decided to meet there for lunch. There are no reservations, and tables are first come first serve. Luckily, a table cleared just as we walked in and we carried some non-valuables on us to mark our spots before stepping in line. However, be prepared to take your lunches to go because seats are rare!

I ordered myself one of their famous Pear blue brie baguette which I’ve just heard so much about! I was not disappointed. The ingredients were so fresh and paired so nicely together that each bite left me craving for more. The pear added a perfect natural sweetness to the sandwich making it light and refreshing whereas the roasted walnuts enhanced the texture. www./jubescomicblog.com/

Avenue Road - For curator Stephan Weishaupt, design is about relationships. Weishaupt’s intuition, world view, and above all, affinity for connecting people is what helps him bring the best of the world of design together into a truly original experience. Born and raised in Munich, Weishaupt’s relationship with his family — a long line of entrepreneurs, architects and carpenters — imparted his insatiable curiosity and appreciation of art and design.

His friendship with design legends George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg ignited the idea for a curated design experience that would bring undiscovered global talent to North America. Together they founded AVENUE ROAD in 2007.

SFU Vancouver

Creation of the downtown campus was a 10-year project. The university had pioneered university mid-career professional education in Vancouver in the early 1980s with the launch of a store-front centre. It was rapidly outgrown and larger premises were leased. Dr. Warren Gill, SFU’s vice-president, university relations and an urban geographer who has played a key role in the development of SFU’

downtown presence, says “It was clear there was need for a down town university centre, but Simon Fraser knew it had to establish the facility through private sector support.” This was achieved and the re-built and revitalized 1927 Spencer building officially opened as SFU’s Vancouver campus on May 5, 1989.

THE HERITAGE DISTRICT ON HASTINGS STREET

HONOUR THE PAST, EMBRACE THE FUTURE

In a modern-day evolution, the historic commerce and banking area of Vancouver’s West Hastings Street has become a centre for the most prestigious of Western Canadian retailing, including world-renowned brands.

The concentration is now such that an opportunity exists for area development, marketing and promotion. While most of the existing retailers in the area are “destinations” for a select clientele, the consensus among them is that much can be gained through a strategic partnership.

HISTORY

A MIDCENTURY MARVEL

Opened in 1958 to replace its predecessor just a ten-minute walk north, this International Style building helped to power Vancouver’s postwar population boom.

THE POST OFFICE

Tech-driven and Transformative

This building is a city block-sized monument to the height of twentieth-century design, technology, and infrastructure. Once the largest building in Vancouver and the largest welded steel structure in the world, the Main Post Office served a rapidly changing city. It had ramps, chutes, elevators, and tunnels. It even had a 730-meter underground conveyor belt system connecting it to nearby rail hubs and waterways like Waterfront Station. Its McCarter Nairne & Partners design stands as the most noteworthy example of the International Style in all of western Canada—an architectural movement that prioritizes functional flexibility across a large volume of space, smooth exterior planes, and modern mix of materials like granite, marble, terra cotta, cast concrete, terrazzo, and aluminium.

THE POST

Its construction marked a hinge point for a city on the verge of a boom: while it was in service, the metro area’s population more than doubled, from about 600,000 to more than 1.3 million. www.thepostvancouver. com/history

Loblaw has mastered building grocery stores in heritage buildings, with one notable example being the 88,000 square foot Loblaw store in the former Maple Leaf Gardens in downtown Toronto. Elements from the experiential Toronto store, which have been “perfected”, will be introduced in the new downtown Vancouver Loblaw CityMarket flagship.

The Post’s Loblaw CityMarket will become the largest grocery store on the downtown Vancouver peninsula. 658 Homer @ Georgia

Vancouver is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful cities in the world so it’s no surprise over 800,000 cruise passengers come through the Port of Vancouver each year, extending their stays before or after their cruise to enjoy this naturally stunning west coast destination.

For more than 30 years, we’ve been a leading homeport for Alaska cruises and act as the home base for one-way and round-trip cruises through the scenic Inside Passage, a stunning coastal route that runs along the west coast of British Columbia.

Why choose a Vancouver-based cruise?

Vancouver is ranked as one of the top cities in the world

Vancouver offers travelers a vibrant destination like no other to enjoy either before or after your cruise. From the stunning west coast mountains, wildlife and shorelines to the international cui-

sine, festivals, exciting nightlife and famous attractions like the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Stanley Park, Grouse Mountain, and FlyOver Canada at Canada Place, Vancouver will ensure a trip you won’t forget.

Vancouver has just been named a Top-Rated U.S. & Canada Cruise Destination in Cruise Critic’s 2019 Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards.

Vancouver is the only homeport with both one-way and round-trip itineraries to Alaska through Canada’s spectacular Inside Passage. Not only will you experience the glaciers, mountains, wildlife and culture of America’s last frontier, the Inside Passage route allows you to experience some of the most scenic coastline British Columbia has to offer.

The shorter distance travelled through this route also means you are able to spend more time enjoying your stops in Alaska. As the only homeport offering one-way trips, sailing out of Vancouver offers you a unique experience and exciting itineraries.

In addition to Alaska, travelers can also enjoy exciting voyages to Hawaii, the Panama Canal, Asia, the South Pacific and California all through the Canada Place cruise terminal.

11 Most Interesting Things To Do

There is a new luxury brand hotel opeing soon up on Pender Street called the Azur. It will have two restaurants and looks good.

On Hastings Street next to and ajoining the SFU Centre of Dialogue is located the Delta Suites Hotel. While this is a newly designed building, it fits in well with its surroundings.

At the corner of Hornby and Pender is the new Sunzen Art Gallery. A little further over on Howe and you will discover Habitat.

Back down at Hastings on the other side of the street is the first Starbucks LEED store.

On the North side of Hastings at Seymour is an old Heritage building that used to be the famous T. Eaton’s Co. department store. It now houses the downtown campus of Simon Fraser U.

A wonderful heritage building is located across the street at the next corner. It used to be a bank building. It is now the Wosk Centre for Dialogue, a part of Simon Fraser University.

Across from the Wosk Centre is the Sears Tower Mall. SFU has the first half of the block and the mall the second. Visit the revolving restaurant at the top of the tower and the shops.

On the south side, again in an old bank building is Birks Jewellers. On the north side is the Royal Bank.

Across Granville from the Royal Bank is a whole block of heritage buildings. It used to be the Vancouver Post Office but now it is the Sinclair Centre.

This section of Hastings is home to several top name designer brand stores. Two are Roche Bobois and Poliform.

At the end of the District is the Grand Dame of Vancouver’s heritage Buildings, the Art Deco, Marine Building, often seen in the movies.

VANCOUVER CONVENTION CENTRE

In 2003, some $100 million in delegate spending was lost because Vancouver did not have enough meeting space to accommodate groups wishing to hold conventions in the city. The expansion of the convention centre followed a review by the Convention Centre Task Force, made up of members of the business community. The expansion increases the number of delegate days each year from the current 150,000 to nearly 370,000 within the first five years after opening. On average, a delegate will spend about $350 per day during their visit to Vancouver, with about one-third of convention delegates traveling to other parts of the province as part of their stay. Built over land and water on some 1,000 piles, the expansion has just been completed this spring 2009. In 2010, the VCEC will be home of the 2010 Olympic Games media and broadcast centre centres.

In order to ensure that the expansion and existing facility are fully integrated, a glass-walled connector will link the facilities, providing delegates with exceptional harbor views as well as a seamless transition.

Featuring floor-to-ceiling glass throughout the expansion, the project will also include a six-acre living roof, one of the largest of its kind in the world. This unique ecosystem is one of many environmental innovations included in the expansion.

It’s easy to think green at the Vancouver Convention Centre. With more than 350 events per year, we maintain an extensive environmental program and work closely with clients to ensure sustainability in all events.

Recycling: We recycle an average of 180,000 kilograms of materials annually –nearly half of the total volume of waste generated. Food & Beverage: Our ‘scratch’ kitchen uses fresh local ingredients without additives, avoids disposable utensils and dishes, and donates leftover food to local charities.

Green Design:

•Our six-acre “living roof” houses thousands of indigenous plants and recovers rainwater for irrigation.

•Seawater heating and cooling and on-site water treatment.

•Fish habitat built into the building foundations.

Energy Conservation:

•Designated a Powersmart Convention Centre by BC Hydro.

•Awarded “GO GREEN” certificate from the Building Owners and Managers.

•West Building expansion built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

BURRARD LANDING

At the foot of Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver a new neighborhood is taking place. It is called Burrard Landing. On a sunny day you will find convention centre delegates eating their lunches on the many benches that dot the eastside of Vancouver’s new downtown waterfront convention centre.

Eateries and other businesses are gradually filling in the vacant spots underneath the convention centre, affording both Vancouverites and tourists a spectacular vista to stroll along and enjoy Vancouver scenery at its finest. The latest edition edition and by far what I think will be become the most successful to date is Mahony & Sons Public House, situated right on the corner edge of the convention centre walk around. Sit on the large expansive patio or listen to the Irish music inside, it doesn’t matter, you will love the place. www.mahonyandsons.com

Other businesses on the landing include The Chophouse, The Golden Horn and Snowggle.

Miku, written in Japanese, symbolically means ‘a beautiful sky.’ Founded in 2008, Miku Restaurant was the original site of Aburi sushi in North America. Over the course of four years, it has developed into one of the most unique and popular Japanese venues in Vancouver. Our following has continued to grow, prompting the need to expand and relocate to a larger facility in order to better serve our guests. This spring Miku will be closing its doors at 2-1055 West Hastings St and re-opening at 200 Granville St. Our new waterfront location features a full bar and lounge area, private dining room and waterfront patio.

Aburi Sushi is an innovation born out of creativity and nurtured in tradition. While Aburi is a new concept in the culinary field of sushi, its foundation is based on the values of traditional sushi making. The basis of our menu concept is a traditional and timeless foundation, balanced with innovation and exploration of culinary boundaries, creating dishes that are familiar and new at the same time.

VANCOUVER HARBOUR FLIGHT CENTRE

.. is the new downtown seaplane terminal available to multiple seaplane operators offering scheduled and chartered flights to many B.C. locations. The state of the art terminal offers for the travelling public complete efficiency and professional service.

Located in front of the Vancouver Convention Centre, the permanent seaplane facility replaces the existing temporary seaplane facilities that are slated to be decommissioned later this year.

The seaplane terminal facilities occupy approximately 1,000 square metres of the Vancouver Convention Centre (3500 level) and include ticketing counters, and contemporary staff office space.

Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre seaplane development is equipped to provide full services to seaplane operators. The docks feature a concrete designed level surface with no pilings, anchored using the SEAFLEX mooring system. “Vancouver’s new seaplane facilities create an atmosphere of comfort and service to further enhance the experience of Vancouver’s bustling seaplane industry,” said Graham

83 Coal Harbour

Clarke, Chairman of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre. “Increased traffic and passenger preferences support new flight destinations, enabling better access to BC’s coastal regions. This helps stimulate business and tourism sectors throughout the province.”

“The central location of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre gives a boost to retail and services located near the eastern seawall,” said Scott Lyons, President of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre.

Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre, a partnership between the Clarke Group of Companies and The Ledcor the Group of Companies, is defining the future of seaplane travel by designing terminal facilities that bring a new level of convenience and efficiency to seaplane operators and passengers travelling to the Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, Victoria, Nanaimo and other coastal destinations. The seaplane docks are engineered for longevity and to uphold the standards set by the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Project.

Nobody could do anything about it. The dogs can’t catch a wily fox. He’ll lead them around all night. Fortunately, no one ever got hurt. Dean and I didn’t want any part of it so we weren’t involved in the latter years. They finally raised enough money to build a cultural centre in 1979 and the city handed over the land after all the rezoning was completed.

Those who rose to power in the C.C.C. were a mixed bunch. Andy Joe (Red Joe) was one. Dr. Wally Chung, Chinatown’s doctor (who knew everybody, and was a Captain in World War II), was another. Dr. K. T. Yue got involved, as well!

“I’ll get Ron Yipp, the big casino owner in Macau to join us. He’s got lots of money, and he’ll make a big donation. We’ll take it over,” said Dr. Yue. And they did! Young people like, Bill Yee, who many years later became a prominent judge, got involved. Others who got involved were Dr. Dean W. Leung (who started the first dental school, at UBC) and his wife Sophia who became an M.P. They wanted to raise their status in Vancouver by being associated with the cultural centre. However, they were misguided because the cultural centre was supposed to be for the benefit of the people in the community.

As of 2003 the C.C.C. had 350 employees and ran many programs, out of at least eleven offices throughout Metro Vancouver. These programs benefitted the Chinese community and new immigrants. They were mainly doing what Dean and I used to do for free, but the C.C.C. did it on a much larger scale. The C.C.C. became an integral part of multicultural Vancouver. The Chinese Cultural Centre honored Dean for naming the Centre (now a nonprofit, charitable organization), and for getting it built (18).

It Ain’t Over Until Faye Leung the Hat Lady Sings

The Faye and Dean Leung Story!

How they changed the faces of Canada

Dean and Faye Leung were pioneers in blending the Chinese society with the Caucasian society in Vancouver during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. They both fought the decades old discrimination in Canada against the Chinese and other nminorities.

Together, they accomplished many things in the fields of banking, housing, education and probably most importantly in the field of immigtration category reform. If you are from an immigrant family who came to Canada after 1967, chances are you are here because of Faye Leung. It can probably be said that Canada is multicultural today because of the efforts of Faye Leung.

Faye was also a pioneer in establishing economic ties between Canada and China starting back in 1980, through to today, when China began to open its doors after

the Cultural Revolution. She was the first Canadian businesswoman to be invited to China by Deng Xiaoping’s government.

The last chapter in her biography is an overview of the Fantasy Gardens boondoggle which saw the first premier in Commonwealth history forced to resign due to his own corruption. Faye is beaten up and smeared by the premier’s lawyers, then the media and made the scapegoat to keep the premier out of jail. A more in-depth look at this entire affair can be read in the book below.

MOVIE: The Ghosts of Chinatown

INVESTMENT: $1 Million

INVESTORS NEEDED: 400

ABOUT: This is an opportunity for small investors to get involved for the first time in a Johnny Depp movie. Ten of Johnny Depp’s movies have either grossed over $1 Billion worldwide or grossed above $500 Million.

CONDITIONS: No money will exchange hands until a producer is on board (Ron Howard) the lead actors all signed (Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep and Sandra Oh) and a studio on board that has a distributor and can guarantee theatrical release (Disney).

RETURN: This budget covers Production $100 Million, Distribution $100 Million, Marketing $100 Million and Actor’s Residuals (cash amount the leads receive after production) $100 Million. Because we are raising the entire cost, this group will be first in line to receive compensation.

THE TRANSACTION: Once we have the investment needed, a Literary Agent in London, England will be engaged to handle all aspects of the transaction; getting a producer on board, the producer getting the actors on board and the studio. The producer will assemble his team, set a schedule and a budget and work will begin on a script.

SYNOPSIS: Faye Leung finds herself on Pender Street in front of the newly opened Chinatown Storytelling Centre. She sees visions of people she used to know going into the various businesses and they see her but say nothing. Unknowingly, she has stumbled into a parallel dimension called Ghost World. It is only for ghosts. The Office has sent down a good wizard (Meryl Streep) to rally the ghosts of Chinatown for an attack on City Hall to get the City to give Chinatown protected heritage status so it won’t disappear. The Mayor wants to sell off the buildings to developers. To read more go to our website: www.warfleetpress.com.
