If city council wants to reintroduce fluoride in the water, it isn’t as simple as just turning on a tap. John Jagorinec, manager of water treatment for the city, said most of the fluoridation equipment was due to be replaced when council decided to pull the plug on the program in 2011. “We’ve got part of our system still in place, but the majority of it reached the end of its lifecycle, and it was torn out about
five years ago,” he said. The department had just begun researching replacement options when council’s directive came down, said Jagorinec. He said if council — or the province or Alberta Health Services — were to give word that they wanted fluoride back, his staff would make it happen but it could take time. He couldn’t estimate a timeline or cost. Projects would have to go to tender, and regulations would have to be reviewed and amended. “It isn’t just simply replacing the equipment. We need approval from Alberta Environment in our operating approval.” The city would also have to secure the fluoride on contract and Jagorinec said there were only a few suppliers in North America that meet quality guidelines.
