A Message from Allen Harrison

President and CEO of Methodist Healthcare

Hospitals will always be essential to their communities and serve a vital role in maintaining and improving health. Our Methodist Hospitals are there for South Texans in times of crisis –whether it’s serving our community throughout a pandemic, providing a safety net for those without health insurance or caring for those in a time of need.

Despite its challenges, 2021 was an outstanding year for Methodist Healthcare, as this Community Impact Report demonstrates. Collectively our facilities cared for over 732,000 patients (inpatient, outpatient, and ER) and provided $786 million in charity and indigent care to South Texans. The year also brought exceptional recognitions of the outstanding patient care at Methodist Healthcare:

• Seven Methodist Healthcare hospitals earned Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade “A’s” in the Spring of 2021.

• Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant celebrated the 20-year anniversary of its first liver transplant.

• Methodist Hospital was named No. 1 Best Regional Hospital for 2021-2022 by U.S. News and World Report for the third year in a row.

• Methodist Hospital | Texsan was awarded the highest rated hospital in San Antonio for open-heart surgery by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

• The San Antonio Express-News readers voted three of our hospitals as Top Hospitals. - Methodist Hospital | Northeast - Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak - Methodist Hospital

• Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant is the only hospital in history to have performed over 200 living and 200 deceased kidney transplants in a single year. The program also celebrated 20 years of liver transplantation.

When our System is successful, our South Texas community benefits in so many ways. Including the distribution of funds for our local co-owner, Methodist Healthcare Ministries (MHM), to operate four clinics that in 2021 supported 331,000 patients. This year, MHM has allocated $129.9 million planned for community health efforts throughout South Texas.

In addition, HCA Healthcare, equal owner of Methodist Healthcare, provided HCA Healthier Tomorrow Funds to our local American Heart Association for their efforts to drive equitable health in our community; to the Hispanic Chamber’s Latina Leadership Institute and to the Boardroom Project to develop future female leaders and to Communities in Schools to help with mental health support for students in San Antonio.

I am proud of our team, our commitment to South Texas, and to the continued investment that Methodist Healthcare, Methodist Healthcare Ministries and HCA is making to extend quality health care and access to hope and health to our region.

Many blessings to you, Allen Harrison

President and CEO of Methodist Healthcare

Winter Storm

Similar to 2020, the year 2021 unfolded in ways we couldn’t predict. Starting February 13, San Antonio experienced snow and ice that brought our city to a grinding halt. One thing weather cannot stop however is people’s need for medical care. Our staff responded just as they always have; with resiliency and a passion to care for patients.

Though we encountered several challenges, we were successful in maintaining regular operations during the Winter Storm. To ensure the safety of our staff, we offered hundreds of nearby hotel rooms, free-ofcharge, so employees would not have to travel to and from their facilities in hazardous conditions. Several other hundred employees opted to shelter in place at our hospitals to not only avoid roadways, but to remain onsite to guarantee their availability for their patients when their shift began. Administrators and other staff also personally transported employees to and from their homes when they were unable to drive themselves. The generosity and teamwork across our entire system was inspirational.

The HCA Healthcare Hope Fund, which provides financial support to staff, responded to employees impacted by the weather and extremely low temperatures, knowing extended power outages may create unsafe living conditions. The HCA Healthcare Hope Fund Executive Committee approved a $10,000 grant maximum for the winter storm (up from the regular disaster grant max of just over $6,100).

The HCA Hope Fund also donated $50,000 to the San Antonio Area Foundation to help fund Mayor Nirenberg’s pipe repair program. This program helped many community members pay for damaged water pipes in mostly impoverished areas of the city.

Service Animals

Our animal family grew by 4 paws and 4 hoofs in 2021. We welcomed Major, a 2 year-old golden retriever and Bambi, a 4 year-old miniature therapy horse. These two new staff members join 5 other dogs that have been providing support for patients and staff for several years.

Ladybug, Chanel, and Fresca are part of our EMS Relations team and focus on visiting First Responders and staff at our facilities.

Jamie and Hazel work at Methodist Children’s Hospital and visit pediatric patients and their families.

COVID-19 Response

After welcoming a vaccine and quickly standing up on site vaccination clinics for staff and physicians, the hope was that we found the ammunition to beat this pandemic. But even with the promise of slowing the spread, much of our focus remained on managing this virus. As a system, we tested 103,018 people for COVID-19, of which 12,964 were positive, 10,298 were admitted to one of our hospitals, and 1,435 unfortunately expired from battling this terrible disease.

Of those admitted to our hospitals, 3,788 were in the ICUs, 1,535 were treated on ventilators and 111 were treated on our Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machines. Methodist Hospital is still the only private hospital in South Texas that offers the option of ECMO treatment.

SAHealth.com20

To this day, our response to COVID-19 remains ongoing, but we are proud of the steps we have taken to help keep our staff, patients and communities safe. Our response has been possible because of the unwavering commitment and tremendous sacrifice of our Methodist Healthcare staff.

Main elements of our response that are important to know:

• We acted early. Our preparations began before the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency or the first case was identified in the U.S. That preparedness was invaluable when Methodist Hospital | Texsan cared for the first positive case in Texas.

• Since we saw that first positive case in February of 2020, we have cared for over 50,000 COVID-19 patients through December 2021.

• We did not layoff or furlough any employees due to the pandemic.

• In 2021, the Methodist Healthcare COVID-19 Response and Assurance Line assisted 4,000 community members with information about COVID-19 and their health. 58% were clinically triaged, with 35% triaged to the ER.

• We protected our staff both physically and financially. In 2021, we distributed almost 78 million pieces of PPE, an increase of 71% compared to 2019 (prior to the pandemic). Our novel pandemic pay program allowed us to continue to pay our staff, even when their hours were affected by the significant decrease in patients.

• We provided multiple resources to our staff who worked endless hours and shifts such as: virtual mental wellness seminars, counseling, 24/7 advice lines and coping tools and free “Doctor on Demand” telehealth visits.

• Collaborated with Hearts Need Art and the San Antonio Symphony to provide “art and music” respites for staff across all facilities to help alleviate stress and anxiety among our staff.

• Facilitated a Methodist Hospital System and Methodist Healthcare Ministries board member gratitude tour to thank hospital staff for their resilience during the pandemic. Over 2,000 prayer cards were distributed.

Community Health Needs Assessment and Community Health Priorities

As part of our commitment to the greater San Antonio community, Methodist Healthcare participates in a county-wide health needs assessment every three years. This assessment is conducted through the Health Collaborative, a non-profit convening organization that brings together hospital systems, other health care organizations, local government and non-profit organizations in Bexar County and Atascosa County to identify and solve community health issues through collaboration. Methodist Healthcare is proud to be a founding member of the Health Collaborative.

In order to work in coordination with other health care systems and organizations, businesses and non-profits, Methodist Healthcare has adopted the five health priority areas based upon the Bexar County and Atascosa County community health assessment, the Bexar County community health improvement plan and the SA2020 goals. Methodist Healthcare and its hospitals have created community improvement plans based on these five health priorities so we may better serve you and the greater San Antonio community.

Hands-Only CPR

In 2021, we set a goal to work with our partners at American Heart Association to train 10,000 community members on Hands-Only CPR. About 70% of out-ofhospital cardiac arrests happen in homes. Responding quickly with CPR when someone has a cardiac arrest can double or triple their chances of surviving. We surpassed our goal for the year by training over 27,000 people on Hands-Only CPR!

Kids Teaching Kids

A program focused on teaching kids how to make healthy snack choices started at MedCity Healthcare in Dallas launched a San Antonio program through Methodist Healthcare. The program revolved around a 21-Day Healthy Snack Challenge aimed at elementary school students. We had over 600 local students sign up to participate in inaugural year of the program. Nine local high school culinary programs also competed to come up with the best healthy snack recipe to be included in a recipe book that all 21-day challenge participants received.

Crush the Crisis

In October, Methodist Healthcare hosted our 3rd annual Crush the Crisis event. Aligned with the DEA’s Drug Take Back Day, we set up medication collections sites at 3 of our free-standing ERs: Alamo Heights, Converse, and Legacy Trails. Staff, alongside San Antonio Police Department officers, spent the morning collecting unneeded and/or expired medications. Across the three locations, we collected 1,128 lbs.! Many community members we spoke with were grateful to safely dispose of the medications they no longer needed. The goal of the event is to remove drugs from people’s houses where they could be misused.

HCA Hope Fund

Our employees’ first goal is to take care of patients. Methodist Healthcare is also a family of co-workers, and so we take care of each other. The HCA Hope Fund was formed more than 15 years ago in the wake of devastating Florida hurricanes so employees around the country who are in need –and those who want to help – have a single, reliable source to give and receive assistance.

The well-named HCA Hope Fund has offered just that – hope. Its support has helped employees who have suffered everything from loss due to hurricane, tornado or fire to those dealing with unexpected catastrophic illness or accident. The fund also steps up to aid employees who are dealing with domestic violence, death of a loved one or other special situations. Since its inception, it has helped more than 45,000 families through contributions of $80 million is assistance. Through the HCA Hope Fund, 146 San Antonio division employees were provided support in 2021.

Supporting Diverse

Businesses Not only is Diversity something we strive for in hiring and patient care, we also work hard to support diverse businesses when purchasing supplies our facilities need. One Year After Leaving the Hospital, Covid-19 Patient Returns with Tacos and a Grateful Heart

This letter is dedicated to a group a very special people, ICU nurses and personnel. I say special because I know they are dedicated to their jobs and patients; it is a calling. They put in long hours and during COVID times, they truly give their hearts and souls to their patients. I know my family sent tacos to these wonderful people as they took care of me during my stay in ICU. It was the beginning of COVID and I now realize how busy they were and how many times they only had a brief moment to eat those yummy tacos. Whether they were warm or stone cold, their primary concern was to care for their patients, including me. I cannot stress my gratitude for your dedication and for not giving up on me and other patients during the first wave of COVID. I was blessed to be in your care and you all were blessed by a strong team of prayer warriors praying for you as well. On the day I was released from rehab, I was interviewed by KSAT news. I told our community that Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak was not only a hospital, but a temple of God. I truly believe this because without your faith, prayer and medicine, I would not be here today to bring you tacos. I thank you from my heart.
