that unite us, shaping our lives with strength, support, and a shared HUMANITY BONDS The
Welcome to the MGS Festival of Arts, Kizuna.
As we gather tonight, we come together not only to celebrate the artistic talents of our girls but also to embrace the diversity that enriches our community. Kizuna is more than just a concert; it is a testament to the power of interconnectedness and collaboration that transcends age and backgrounds.
At the heart of Kizuna, a unique production characterised by intergenerational learning, lies beautiful synergy between generations. Through the process of learning collaboration and communication, our students, alongside seniors from the community^ have put together a multisensory experience that showcases a unity of spirit and celebrates our dynamism as one arts community.
It has been a meaningful process for our students, staff and instructors to bring Kizuna to life, and a tremendous learning experience for our girls. They learn about what it means to be a part of a collective journey in preparing for this concert. As they nurture strong friendships and ties with fellow performers, they are also energised by a shared zeal and purpose to use their unique talents and gifts in the arts to engender a spirit of hope and positivity in others.
Our girls come away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of different perspectives — in the various student-led roles they undertake as a planning committee, and in working together with the seniors, hearing their stories and witnessing the seniors’ resilience and commitment towards learning.
Kizuna is about collective trust and support that allows us to see possibilities, create and grow together as a community. Today’s production is a testament to the co-learning we have seen at MGS. Through the rehearsals and practices, our performers learn to be sensitive to and supportive of one another’s strengths and ‘yet-to-be’s. The essence of Kizuna shines through when we lean into the authenticity and vulnerability in each of us to courageously open the doors of our hearts and minds to forge close relationships and build enduring bonds.
Your presence here tonight is a cherished affirmation of our efforts to spread the spirit of interconnectedness and community in and through the arts. We hope that you will enjoy the concert as much as we have enjoyed making it possible for you.
Thank you and have a beautiful evening ahead.

Kocsar's composition, rooted in the Hungarian choral tradition, imbues the ancient Salve Regina text with modern harmonic richness and emotive depth The piece resonates with haunting beauty, showcasing Kocsar's mastery of blending medieval reverence with contemporary musical expression.
Paulus' contemporary American masterpiece embodies themes of longing and belonging, weaving lush harmonies and poignant melodies. Reflecting on life's journey, it evokes a sense of nostalgia and hope, resonating deeply with audiences through its emotional depth and introspective beauty.
Bardos' jubilant setting of Psalm 100 is characterised by rhythmic vitality, lush harmonies, and a joyful spirit
Through dynamic contrasts and expressive melodies, Bardos captures the exuberance of praise, inviting listeners into a vibrant celebration of faith
From Mendelssohn's monumental oratorio "Elijah," this piece exudes the composer's Romantic sensitivity and mastery of choral writing. With tender melodies, rich harmonies, and a comforting message, it offers solace and inspiration, reflecting Mendelssohn's profound faith and musical brilliance.

Aquellos Ojos Verdes or Green Eyes is a popular and classic Bolero originally written in Spanish in1929. The lyrics in this song outline the singer’s admiration for the mesmerising green eyes of a loved one. Philip Lane is an English composer and musicologist who is noted for his light music compositions and arrangements, as well as his prominent work reconstructing lost film scores. As the title indicates, Pantomime (1971) is lighthearted and entertaining in style, with the short movements designed to be succinct and to maintain their welcome. The piece received its first performance in November 1973 by the Cheltenham Chamber Orchestra conducted by Laurence Hudson It has been commercially recorded on the Naxos label by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by David Lloyd-Jones
CONCERTO GROSSO NO. 1
Ernest Bloch, a Swiss-American composer, was known for incorporating diverse influences into his compositions, ranging from his Jewish heritage to his exploration of different musical styles. His Concerto Grosso No 1 is no exception, showcasing his ability to blend classical forms with expressive and emotive elements. In his 3rd movement, the word “Pastorale” suggests that the piece has an outskirt, countryside nature, evoking a sense of tranquillity and simplicity, drawing inspiration from the idyllic and peaceful aspects of rural life. The inclusion of "Rustic Dances" suggests a lively and perhaps folk-inspired section within the movement. Rustic dances often incorporate elements of folk music, reflecting a more earthy and traditional character.

Marked as one of the “young Singaporean violinists to watch” in 2011 by the Strad magazine, Edward has performed widely in venues across the USA and Singapore, including Carnegie Hall and the Esplanade Concert Hall. He is an alumni of the Eastman School of Music and the Yale School of Music, where he was the recipient of the annual Presser Foundation Award, a grant awarded to one promising musician.
Since returning to Singapore in 2012, Edward has been active both as a violinist and a conductor. He performs as a freelance musician with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and re:sound Chamber Orchestra, and has been first violinist with the Concordia Quartet since its formation in 2019.
His work with conducting is a natural outgrowth of his love for teaching; in addition to his work with school orchestras, Edward is the associate conductor of the Musicians' Initiative and has worked with The Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Music Makers as a guest conductor. Edward has been leading the MGS String Ensemble since 2015.
The MGS Secondary Handbell Ensemble has provided a platform for aspiring musicians to develop their interest in music and nurture their creative talents in the performing arts.
The handbell ringers with different musical abilities create music together and gain exposure to music that spans a wide range of genres: sacred hymns, classical pieces, pop songs, Disney or local songs. The ringers strive to build teamwork, self-confidence, resilience, respect and leadership while honing their musical skills.
The Handbell Ensemble participates in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation, MGS Festival of Arts, and with other musical groups in other schools for combined concerts.
Members have exchanges and collaborate with the community, such as St Luke’s Hospital and Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) Wesley Active Ageing Centre for VIA. Ringers are able to contribute towards meaningful causes and positively impact the lives of others.
The MGS Choir values are a shared sense of passion and a love for singing that is deeply rooted in all our members. The principles which guide us in our rehearsals are Awareness, Attitude, Ability and Attendance.
Our sessions include physical warm-ups which improve our lung capacity, vocal warm-ups which prepare us for the rehearsal ahead and sectionals which ensure we are familiar with the repertoire. Through these, we become more disciplined, responsible and are able to serve both the school and the community through our performances. In addition, the MGS Intergenerational Choir, founded last year, has enabled us to strengthen bonds with seniors and foster our musical passion, inspired by their love for music, wisdom and positivity. We look forward to future collaborations, learning and performing together.
The MGS Guitar Ensemble was established in 2007 to instil passion in young musicians inclined towards playing the guitar. The ensemble develops its members to showcase the MGS values of Godliness, Excellence and Love and obtains notable achievements in the biennial SYF Arts Presentation. The Guitar Ensemble learns new techniques and hone their skills, as well as strengthen the camaraderie among themselves. The CCA experience is enriched by masterclasses, external performances and exchange programmes with other guitar ensembles from different secondary schools and higher institutions to deepen the members’ passion for and appreciation of the art of guitar-playing.
With diligence and perseverance, the Guitar Ensemble has improved tremendously and learnt that listening to the playing of other sections help us to stay in sync, and to be connecting with the audience with our expressions and movements. Our recent achievement includes distinction for Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation. It is the heartbeat of the MGS Guitar Ensemble to reach out by giving back to the community through fund-raising performances and VIA (Values-inAction) projects.
The MGS String Ensemble is dedicated to fostering a musical community where everyone has a shared love for music. This is achieved by the strong sense of pride and excellence within the CCA. In 2023, the CCA has placed a significant emphasis on empowering each member to contribute and take on leadership roles, while instilling a strong sense of belonging and responsibility. Besides the Sustainable Christmas Market performance at South Beach, the Ensemble is building on giving back to the community, as seen through mentoring the IGL seniors on string instruments at the end of 2023.
Aiming to provide members with a fulfilling and enriching experience, the String Ensemble has also been active in serving the school through performance in a number of school events, and collaborating with external groups such as the GSF local school exchange with Pui Ching Middle School and Taipei Philharmonic Youth Ensemble and MGxAC with ACS (Independent) and ACJC exchange in 2023.

Bridging the guiding lights of the past with the hands of the future, enriching lives across generations with shared bonds and experiences.
As part of the school’s purpose anchors, MGLearns and MGServes, Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) is actively engaging in Intergenerational Learning (IGL) using an asset-based approach which draws on the expertise and experience of youths and the elderly to promote intergenerational understanding and respect, and engender a sense of agency and ownership in both groups that ultimately contributes to strengthening Singapore’s social compact.
By collaborating with organisations dedicated to active ageing, IGL@MGS provides authentic contexts for the intentional development of 21st century competencies through the two-way exchange of learning between community and school. Lifelong Deep Learning Global Competencies of Character, Citizenship and Communication are developed as students and seniors engage in meaning-making together to gain perspectives and skills that enable one to live purposefully.
IGL co-learning experiences are designed with intentionality to facilitate the fostering of mutual understanding, empathy and respect between students and seniors through shared stories, collaborative learning and the co-creation of impactful community projects. Platforms for sustained interactions among different age groups foster strong intergenerational bonds and contribute towards the multifaceted MGS education experience for our girls.
These meaningful intergenerational interactions encompass seniors' involvement in the school’s curricular and co-curricular activities as well as events such as the Festival of Arts, where shared interests and time spent together lead to genuine camaraderie between students and seniors, promoting a deeper appreciation for their individual strengths and collective possibilities.
The 7 Performing Arts Ensembles in Kizuna I and Kizuna II involve a total of 67 seniors who have dedicated over 80 hours to learn with and rehearse alongside the students for the performances.
To find out more about their experiences, we hope you can scan the QR codes in the programme instagram @mgsfoa_kizuna for our photos and interviews with the seniors, and enjoy the specially curated concert programme.
Yes, we had a good time, the students are all very friendly towards us seniors. We are learning from them as much as they are learning from us.
Chia Yook Feung, IGL Choir (Barker Road Methodist Church)
Through the practices we had with them, we truly learnt how much the IGL seniors were willing to come and practise with us. We have been very inspired by their enthusiasm and their passion towards learning handbells.
Loh Yanyi (Year 4), Handbell Ensemble
I’m very humbled by the humility of the MGS girls, the hospitality and what you have done for us so far.
Alan Chan Ah Wee, IGL Guitar Ensemble (Eventbrite)
Through interacting with and mentoring the seniors, I recognise the paramount significance of cooperation. This way, the seniors could have an enhanced journey of learning. Moving forward, I am committed to embracing collaboration as a cornerstone of all my projects, transforming me into a better team player
