"I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." ~Psalms 27:13-14 (NIV)

Learning to wait is one of life’s earliest challenges, and it doesn’t seem to get easier! Here are just a few times we must wait:

…to start our first day of school – that tempestuous toddler who wants a lunchbox just like the big kids.

…for Christmas – and that shiny new toy.

…to be selected for a team – hoping your name would not be the last one called.

…to be done with finals or other tests –eager to start your new life as an adult.

…to get married, have kids, get that perfect job, for a new car or new house.

The list could go on. Waiting . . . very few of us are really good at waiting. However, the Psalmist reminds us that to see the goodness of the Lord, we must be strong and take heart in our wait .

This is a hard lesson for the youth we serve at The Methodist Home. Our younger kids don’t understand what has happened to their family or the meaning of court dates, reunification plans or permanency steps. Some teens would prefer to be “home” but they are waiting for a parent to get out of jail, finish a detox program or step up in some other fashion. Other young people are eager to put the past behind them and want to be out on their own “RIGHT NOW”!

Alas, while they are with us, they are in a season of waiting. Because of your kindness, we can encourage them to BE STRONG! While they are learning to wait, you help us show them the “goodness of the Lord in the land of the living”. Because of your gifts, the goodness of the Lord can look like a warm bed and plentiful, healthy meals. It might be transportation to and from a sibling visit or other family member. It is the love and support of caring staff, teachers, and all the extraordinary people who nurture them, including our chaplains who introduce them to the grace, mercy and love of Christ. It is making sure each child has exactly what they need when they need it. You help make all this possible!

Your incredible contributions are needed now more than ever. Thank you for generously providing the resources we need to show them the goodness of the Lord in this season of waiting.

Earlier this year we held our annual awards banquet at The Methodist Home in Macon, and it was a night to remember! The kids loved getting all dressed up and showing off their best attire. We all enjoyed a delicious meal while capturing countless photos to remember the special evening. Our girls and boys enthusiastically cheered each other on as they walked across the stage to receive recognition for all their hard work both academic and personal. We also honored our graduating seniors, celebrating their amazing achievements. Rev. Mark Magoni was our guest speaker and his words really added to magic of the night. We look forward to this event every year, celebrating and applauding the amazing efforts and successes of our children.

In honoring our graduates, two wonderful churches helped provide scholarships. Mulberry Street United Methodist Church’s Rosser II Sunday School class awarded Amon a generous scholarship to support his upcoming year at Kennesaw State University. Dr. Jimmy Asbell of Vineville United Methodist Church presented Alejandra with a scholarship on behalf of an anonymous couple in the church. Additionally, Marqkel at The Carpenter’s Way Ranch received the Richard E. Robinson, Jr. Scholarship. What a beautiful blessing for our youth who have worked so hard!

Residents and staff from our campus in Valdosta recently participated in the Valdosta Street Feed, an initiative to provide meals for the homeless in the community. Together, they prepared and served egg salad and chicken salad sandwiches, bringing nourishment and kindness to those in need. It is so heartwarming to see our youth serving others!

Mrs. Lamar, our family engagement facilitator from Bibb County Schools, spearheaded an exciting new agriculture initiative at Price Academy. Driven by a desire to provide hands-on learning experiences, she reached out to the Bibb County UGA Extension Office to inquire about their agriculture program.

Once a week, Mrs. Muhammad arrives to facilitate a gardening class with the students. Under her guidance, our youth have planted an array of herbs and vegetables, including squash, zucchini, tomatoes, and bell peppers. The excitement builds each week as our students tend to their garden, eagerly awaiting the results of their hard work.

The moment they had all been waiting for finally arrived and our students proudly harvested their first squash! This experience has not only introduced them to the world of agriculture but also imparted valuable life

skills. Through this initiative, our students have gained a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and the satisfaction that comes from nurturing and growing something themselves.

JordAyne’s

JourneY

Jordayne has been at The Methodist Home for one year. Despite being in foster care since she was five years old this was Jordayne’s first group home. Her initial experience was challenging, however, with time and support, things began to change. “I am doing good. At first, I did not want to be here. After a while, I decided I liked it here because it was a good community.

I had never been in a place like this and I never had a big family like this,” she shared. In just a year, Jordayne has grown and changed so much under the guidance and care of The Methodist Home. It was no surprise when earlier this year she received the award for Growth & Change at our annual awards banquet. Jordayne was so grateful to be recognized

for all her hard work. It is an award she will cherish alongside her A/B Honor Roll award. When Jordayne first arrived at The Methodist Home she was not doing well academically. However, she quickly realized she had a stable environment and supportive staff to help her navigate her challenges. To Jordayne’s surprise, she started getting recognition for her good grades. In addition to running track, she even joined her school’s Beta Club and National Honor Society.

Art club is another extracurricular Jordayne hopes to be a part of in the upcoming school year. She loves to be creative and enjoys exploring different forms of expression. One of Jordayne’s favorite ways to express herself is by writing poetry. She recently started reading the complete works of Maya Angelou, finding inspiration in the legendary poet’s words. Jordayne was very excited to share some of the poetry she has written.

SLEEPING BEAUTY by Jordayne

I dream of beauty and when I wake up I experience it my mind releases it it implores me to reach beyond my thoughts and grasps the potential I hold my mind that is surprisingly worth more than gold a beautiful thing God gets to call His own I dream of beauty and despite my negligence it still favors me when I wake up I still breathe beauty itself encourages my heart to explore beyond its simple ways allowing me to find Him I dream of beauty and all together it is beautiful there is no flaw in it

Jordayne proudly displays her cherished awards!

At 16, Jordayne is preparing to enter her junior year of high school with a mix of excitement and disbelief. “It’s weird because it feels like I was just a freshman and pretty soon I will be a senior and starting my life,” she reflects. Jordayne’s life at The Methodist Home has been filled with new and enriching experiences. She has created so many fond memories including going to her first hockey game and going to prom with her peers. She also works at Urban Air, hoping to save up for a car. Jordayne is looking forward to the many more opportunities that await her.

At The Methodist Home, Jordayne found the support she needed to excel academically and personally. “When I got here I finally started doing good for myself. The people around me helped,” she shared. It is an honor to be a part of her journey as we watch Jordayne become the person she is meant to be. So far, we have witnessed her be a kind friend to others, a creative soul, a bright, hardworking student and so much more. We love seeing Jordayne blossom into her beautiful self!

For about three years now Rico has called The Carpenter’s Way Ranch his home. When he first arrived, the transition was a difficult one. Rico has been in foster care since he was quite young. Coming to The Methodist Home felt like a pattern he had lived all his life was repeating once again. However, gradually, over time he realized it was not the same at all. Rico found a home, caring adults and a family at The

A couple of years ago, The Home held an open house for administrators, teachers and school board members. During that time, Rico asked to speak and share some of his experience. It was a special moment, remembered by many to this day. Rico shared…

“Ever since I moved here, this place has changed my life. They have taught me to be responsible, respectful, to be a gentleman, and more. I love these people from the bottom of my heart. They have really helped me. This place is something special. These kids, there is a lot going on in our lives, but I promise you, we are good kids. I’ve been through hard times, but ever since I came here, everyone has had my back. They do everything to provide for us. I love all these people, all staff. This is the most important thing to me right here (he was pointing to a wooden sign that read “FAMILY”)… Everyone here is my family and these guys are my brothers.”

Rico wanted their visitors to know they were “good kids” who had just been through some bad situations. He is so grateful for The Home and how we have helped him. In the beginning, Rico kept to himself. After a while, he grew to really like his staff as he got to know them. They provided comfort for the challenges he was still facing. Rico had a lot of built up anger, it was how he had learned to cope. Therapy helped him overcome those feelings and gave him new and healthy outlets. He found confidence and loves being around others now.

Rico is renowned for his athleticism. He was even voted Most Athletic by his peers at our most recent Awards Banquet. Rico has been playing sports since he was eight years old. Currently, he is engaged in football, basketball and running track at his local high school. Rico hopes to continue playing sports in college where he is interested in studying business management or welding. He is very excited for his upcoming senior year and to achieve the goals he has set for himself. Rico is committed to keeping his grades up and graduating from high school, a feat not many from his family have accomplished.

Best Dressed, so clearly his fellow residents agree he has flair.

We can already envision him walking across the graduation stage to accept his diploma, dressed “to the nines.” That is another thing about Rico, he has style! He loves getting dressed up for an occasion. He was also voted

Rico keeps up with a pretty demanding schedule between athletics and academics. Time and time again, he shows his dedication and commitment. He has the respect of his peers and is a role model to the other boys in his cottage. We have loved seeing how God has helped Rico and we anticipate he will continue to do amazing things!

In February 1994, The Methodist Home extended its care to young girls by opening the Americus Regional Group Home, serving the Americus District and its neighboring communities. Over the past three decades, this home has been a sanctuary of healing, hope, and love for over 150 teenage girls in our residential program.

On July 6, 1994, a devastating flood occurred, trapping six residents and two staff members inside the cottage. With 42 inches of water surrounding the building and washedout roads, rescue seemed impossible. However, neighbor and friend Dan Torbert bravely

responded to our call for help. He rescued everyone by pulling them through a window and carrying them through the floodwaters to safety. Moments after the rescue, the cottage was destroyed by the floodwaters. Despite the devastation, the community raised $94,000 to repair and refurbish the cottage. Thanks to partners and supporters, we were back in the building by Thanksgiving.

In February 1996, the generosity of John and Betty Pope led to the dedication of the Pope Regional Office Building, allowing us to expand our services to include Therapeutic Foster Care for the next four years. Since then,

we have been devoted to serving children through our prevention ministry. Partnering with the Sumter Area Ministerial Association, we created “All God’s Children,” an afterschool and summer program serving in highrisk neighborhoods, providing educational guidance, enrichment, recreation, and spiritual encouragement. Judy Tott founded the Americus Auxiliary Board to offer additional services after retiring as the director of The Home in 2010. Under the direction of Rebecca Ferguson, the Auxiliary established the Home Run 5K and Fun Run. Twelve years later this event has raised over $100,000 to support our

girls. Even after graduating high school, girls from the Americus Home continue to receive aftercare services while attending technical college or Georgia Southwestern State University.

As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of our Americus home, we reflect on the countless lives impacted by this haven of compassion and look forward to continuing our mission of bringing hope and healing to God’s most vulnerable children. Cheers to 30 years of restoring childhoods and strengthening families and many more to come!

On Saturday, June 10, 2024, runners laced up their shoes to benefit our girls in Americus. We are so grateful for all who come far and near to partner with us in restoring childhoods, one step at a time. We had a wonderful time and our girls enjoyed spending time with their community. They had a blast handing out medals to the little ones and passing out water to the runners. It is always so heartwarming to see the people who have consistently come year after year to support our young ladies. It is equally as inspiring to see the new faces added each year. Big shout out to our sponsors and volunteers, we could not do this without you all! We will see you all at the next race!

AvArY’s trANsforMatioN Future Past

Avary’s journey with Lighthouse for Families began during a time of uncertainty and struggle. As a young boy in the fifth grade, he began facing significant challenges at school. His mother, concerned about his well-being, sought help from his pediatrician and other professionals. Despite multiple efforts to address the issue, Avary continued to struggle. A school counselor suggested therapy. It was a pivotal moment that would change Avary’s life. Avary’s mother discovered Lighthouse for Families in Macon and scheduled their first appointment with Ms. Courtney, one of our therapists.

Avary’s mother recalls how the behaviors that plagued him at school never manifested at home, making it difficult to understand the root of the problem. “It took me a while to see it and believe it at first. The stuff he was doing at school he would never do at home. He was the total opposite at home. I could not understand

why he was acting the way he was,” she shared. It was only through therapy that Avary began to address the underlying issues, particularly his struggles with bullying and the pressure to fit in.

Ms. Courtney’s approach was both compassionate and effective. She helped Avary understand it was okay to be himself and to embrace his intelligence. Through consistent support and guidance, Avary learned to navigate his emotions, build confidence, and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Avary himself describes his experience with Ms. Courtney as lifechanging. Initially hesitant and closed off, he gradually opened up and began to trust her. By the fourth or fifth session, Avary noticed a significant shift in his attitude and behavior. “The main thing she taught me was to listen and how to listen. The more I listened the more I learned. She really helped me with my confidence,”

he shared. Ms. Courtney taught him the importance of listening, managing his anger, and expressing himself in positive ways. Avary found a friend and confidant in Ms. Courtney.

This newfound understanding and self-awareness had a ripple effect on Avary’s life. His academic performance improved, his interactions at home became more positive, and he no longer felt the need to act out for attention. Avary’s mother witnessed this remarkable transformation. She knew without the intervention of Lighthouse for Families, Avary might have faced expulsion or worse.

Avary is now thriving, looking forward to experiencing high school and pursuing his interests, such as soccer and drumming. In his free time Avary enjoys playing with his sweet dog, Hannah and going fishing to relax. He is very

appreciative for the support of his mother. He shared, “A lot of kids in my situation do not get parents who go above and beyond for them. My mother tried everything for me. I am grateful she gave me chance after chance.” Avary’s story is a testament to the power of therapy and the incredible impact Lighthouse for Families has on the lives of children and their families.

As they reflected on their journey, Avary’s mother expressed deep gratitude for the help they received. She was so grateful she had continued exploring the different options and solutions that would lead her down the path to Lighthouse for Families. Despite the obstacles and detours they faced, she never gave up on finding the right help for her son. Through the compassionate care and understanding of Lighthouse for Families, Avary and his family found relief and hope for the future.

PuttING for a Purpose!

We had a wonderful time at our 12th Annual Golf Classic in St. Marys, GA. This event honors our dear friend, Linda Moore, and raises essential funds for our boys’ home in St. Marys. The weather was beautiful and the competition was spirited as golfers gathered to support our mission.

One of our boys, Lucas*, likes to read. It warms my heart knowing he has a safe and supportive place to do the things he loves. Lucas has caring adults who will take him to the library or provide him with the literature he wants and needs. He has a nurturing environment where his creativity will be encouraged and his education supported.

Our boys, like Lucas, thrive because of generous individuals like you, who help restore childhoods.

Thanks to our dedicated participants, sponsors, and volunteers, our young men will receive the care and opportunities they deserve. It was a day of joy, fellowship with our community, and making a lasting impact. We are looking forward to another great tournament in 2025!

This summer, Ty juggled a full load of college classes while working hard to boost her GPA. She is determined to finish her education strong and start her teaching career early. She also worked for the Macon Bacon as a cashier, enjoying the fun atmosphere and the themed game days. This job not only provided her with a steady income but also gave her community service hours and internship credit!

When Ty first arrived at The Methodist Home she was placed in our Independent Living Program (ILP). Despite feeling isolated and homesick, Ty found solace and friendship in the young girls with whom she lived. Their support and encouragement helped her see herself in a new light—as an inspiration and a role model. The girls often sought her advice, and their admiration gave her a sense of purpose she had never experienced before.

Ty returned to The Methodist Home for her summer break from college. Ty is

on an accelerated path to graduation after switching her major, aiming to complete her degree a year earlier. Originally set on a career in criminal justice, she had a change of heart after spending time on campus the previous summer. Her interactions with the children ignited a passion for teaching, and she realized her true calling to become an art teacher.

Ty’s days were busy, but she found joy in her work and studies. She cherished the moments she spent with the children at The Methodist Home, knowing her presence made a difference. She plans to continue this journey by working at an elementary school in the coming semesters, eager to bring her passion for art and education to more young lives. Through her experiences at The Home, Ty discovered her potential to inspire and guide others. She looks forward to a future where she will continue to make a positive impact as a dedicated and compassionate teacher.

As the 2024-2025 school year approaches, I feel excitement and anticipation filling the air as children across The Methodist Home prepare to return to their classrooms. For most, it is a time of new beginnings complete with the promise of learning and growth. However, for many who have experienced foster care, the start of a new school year can be a source of anxiety and trepidation. Imagine being a child who has to change schools multiple times a year, never knowing if you will be in the same classroom or surrounded by the same classmates from one semester to the next. This is the reality for far too many kids in care. Foster children change schools an average of two to three times per year, with each move bringing a host of challenges ranging from adjusting to new teachers and curriculum to navigating unfamiliar social dynamics.

The Methodist Home is a beacon of hope for God’s children during these unexpected circumstances. We shine a light where there is darkness, holding children’s hands while guiding them back to the path they were meant to travel. We provide a safe and stable environment for every child who walks through our doors. With the right support and resources, our children have the potential to overcome the odds stacked against them and thrive. We are committed to fulfilling the needs of our youth, both inside and outside the classroom, and we need your help!

As we embark upon a new school year, I invite you to join us in our mission of restoring childhoods. Together we can give hope, healing, and opportunity to the children God has placed in our care.

Your donation will transform the life of a child at The Methodist Home. It will provide essential school supplies, ensuring they have the tools needed to excel in their studies. It will offer nutritious meals, helping them stay focused and energized throughout the school day. Your generosity will also support tutoring and mentoring programs, giving children the personalized attention they need to overcome academic challenges. Additionally, your donation will fund extracurricular activities, allowing them to explore their passions and build self-confidence. With your help, we can provide a safe, nurturing environment where every child can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.

Your generosity has the power to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable children. By supporting our girls and boys, you are helping the next generation, ensuring a bright future ahead.

plantING seeDs

Thank you for planting seeds so generously in the lives of our kids!

As I prepared a Bible study for our boys at The Carpenter’s Way Ranch, I was trying to find a way to help them think about their time here as a time God can use to reshape and restore some pieces of their lives. So, I brought a puzzle for us to put together. I was cleverly trying to illustrate some well-known passages like Rom 8:28 (God works all things together for good), Phil 1:6 (He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it) and Gen 50:20 (what human beings meant for harm God meant for good).

I had visions of helping them begin to understand while God doesn’t CAUSE

Have you ever received a packet of seeds in the mail from The Methodist Home? Perhaps some of you have planted yours this year. This reminds me of a parable Jesus told that’s recorded in Matthew 13: 3-9

“Listen! A sower went out to sow. [Some translations say: A farmer went out to plant.] And as he sowed, some seeds fell on a path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched, and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. If you have ears, hear!”

everything in our lives, God will work WITH everything in our lives. Also, God brings lots of differently shaped pieces together and can use even the hardest things in our lives for ultimate good, and finally, that He is never done working in our lives, helping to fit pieces together…. All that was my big grandiose idea of what I wanted these teenagers to fully absorb that night.

At the end of the night, I asked, “What did you hear tonight?” And without hesitation Danny* said, “That God loves me.” And I said, YES, Danny! Yes! That’s exactly what I’m trying to say.

oF Hope!

Back to Jesus’ story for just a moment --- a sower or a farmer was sowing seed – that was their job --- so presumably they were experienced at this, and apparently this sower was casting seeds rather liberally, letting them fall wherever they might. Notice that Jesus never makes it sound like the sower did anything wrong just because the seed got scattered and landed all over the place -- in four different types of soil that yielded various results. It almost sounds like just a natural consequence of sowing. The sower simply sows, rather indiscriminately, maybe even extravagantly. It reminds me of how we’re called to love. Indiscriminately. Extravagantly. We’re not deciding who is worth the investment and who isn’t --NO! We scatter seed in the life of every child who comes our way, never knowing onto what kind of soil that seed may fall or what the outcome might be.

Recently, I saw two of our alumni, each of those men have told me at different times: “I didn’t listen very well when I was there, and I certainly didn’t always behave. In fact, nobody would have guessed then how my life would have turned out today!” But there were people there --- staff members who persevered --- donors who invested --- people who prayed --- sowing seeds in the lives of these most vulnerable children.

I don’t know who all the seed-planters were in our kids’ lives back then --- --- but I thank God for them.

The Trappist monk and theologian Thomas Merton wrote: “Every moment and every event of every [person’s] life on earth plants something in [his or her] soul.” Friends, may we never grow weary of seed-planting. That is our calling. May we sow those seeds, the seeds of Christ’s love indiscriminately, even extravagantly, in the life of every child we are called to serve ---- and then trust God to do the rest.

Annette Lefholz (R) and her daughter (L) started the “Pack My Summer Sack” project. Thanks to them our kids received pool towels, water bottles, goggles, and so much more to use for the summer!

Joann Phillips (L), and Francine Shuman (R) of Cordele First United Methodist Church Christian Women’s Fellowship presented gift bags to Alison Evans, CEO for our graduating seniors! Thank you for celebrating our girls’ and boys’ accomplishments!

MOPS Consignment of Macon/ Forsyth made a generous donation for our youth! Christina Speth (R) presented our Chaplain Josh Gale (L) with the check.

Methodist Home CEO, Alison Evans received a very generous check from Mr. Jamie McDaniel, President of the Four County Exchange Club. This club does many volunteer projects along with kind gifts of support. We applaud their mighty work!

Stuffed Stiches blessed our children with a hand stitched teddy bear. Your kind gift is a reminder of how much they are loved!

John Haney with Travel With Friends gifted each and every one of our kids with a cross from the holy land of Jerusalem!

Striplin Terrace United Methodist Church in Columbus delivered Easter baskets for our young men at The Carpenter’s Way Ranch!

As part of their day of service, Martha Bowman United Methodist Church spent a day serving our kids!

Thank You! Thank You! Thank

The Big Henry Board held their annual golf tournament to benefit all of our kids at The Methodist Home as they presented a check for $28,500!

The Heart of Georgia Quilt Guild donated beautiful quilts for our children, hand made with love!

Tommy Maloney blessed our children with brand new bedsheets by supporting Tattnall Square Academy student, Riley and her fundraiser! What an amazing way to help so many young people! From left to right, Cassandra High (Residential Director), Tommy Maloney, Riley, Sterling Royster (Director of Campus Life).

Macedonia Baptist Church hosted their 20th Holy Smoke Christian Grilling Competition this year. Half of the funds raised are donated to The Methodist Home in support of our girls in Americus! Our President/CEO, Alison Evans and Events Manager, JoAnn Roberts posed with one of the participating teams, Upatoi United Methodist Church.

Thank you, Macon North Rotary Club, for supporting our kids with a generous donation! Nikki Franklin (L) presented President/CEO Alison Evans (R) with a check.

You! Thank You! Thank You!

CHArItAble reMaINDer uNItrusts (Crut s)

Have you been thinking about legacy planning? If you are looking for an immediate tax deduction, a steady income stream, and a way to leave money to your favorite charity – a charitable remainder unitrust might be a good option for you.

A charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) is an estate planning tool that provides income to a named beneficiary during the donor’s life with the remainder of the trust going to a charitable cause once the donor passes away.

CRUTs are usually funded via a valuable asset, such as artwork, a house, stocks, bonds, or other property. CRUTs are irrevocable; assets that go in cannot be taken back, and the trust usually cannot be modified once it is created. The trust can be invested in a variety of asset classes including cash, securities, and real estate.

The amount of income that a beneficiary receives depends upon how the CRUT is constructed. The duration of income payments may be for life or up to 20 years. Income distributions are usually taxable.

Some benefits of CRUTs include:

• Immediate tax deduction for a portion of the contribution to the trust

• No upfront capital gains tax on appreciated assets that are donated to the trust

• Steady income stream for life or many years

• Federal and possible state income tax charitable deductions

• Knowledge and reassurance of your philanthropic contribution to a charity of your choice

Planned giving options such as CRUTs can serve as valuable instruments in creating your lasting legacy. If you would like to learn more about how a CRUT might help you achieve your financial goals and fulfill your philanthropic aspirations, please contact Caroline Edenfield at 478.751.1725 or Caroline@FoundationMCH.org.

This article is only intended to provide a general overview regarding Charitable Remainder Unitrusts. Please consult with a qualified professional advisor in determining your best planned giving options.
