elcome to Volume 17, and a notable issue to get this year rolling - the Method Movie issue. Method has a storied video past; in the early days, the mag came with a cover mounted DVD holding the video shots to back up the photos and stories in the magazine. This past year, however, marked the first time Method has produced a full-length feature film.

In respect to approach, our movie is similar to many other films you’ll see this year; we rounded up some of our favorite riders, brought on a few killer filmers, and sent our crews across the globe in search of unripped spots. In many other ways, the Method Movie is remarkably unique and we’ve highlighted those facets in the following pages.

One especially individual aspect of this project is our Legends Session segment, a Chriso brainchild, and one of the raddest events, in my worthless opinion, to happen last year. We invited a heavy handful of the most influential riders from boarding’s earlier days - Line, Ranquet, Soderqvist, Haakonsen, Olofsson, Porcheron and more – to join the Method crew and some additional homies for a no-stress party session in Mad Jonsson´s incredible backyard. (Check out www. stadsurfing.no and www.harpefossen.no) The gang surfed and boarded and partied and reminisced the week away at this little slice of Norwegian heaven and we’ve got the still highlights within these pages

Long live the full video, The Mooseman We were out shooting this zone the second day in Japan after the boys had already destroyed a double down to gap setup in perfect weather.

The day after, when Max Zebe and I took this shot, was cold and windy, and we didn’t quite have speed for what we wanted to pull off. Ryan “Diggles” Scardigli and myself were standing there in the blizzard, weathering the storm, while the boys made the best of it and started to session these stairs with the speed they had. It took Max all the pop he could muster to ollie past the flat of the double set into a firecracker landing on the second down part. The setup looked unreal with only the stairs visible in complete whiteout, and I knew we had a setup for a sick photo. This yet again is proof that the best things happen when you least expect it!

Q&A with Method Magazine editor and movie co-director, The Mooseman.

H

ow did you select the music for the Method Movie?

First and foremost, we wanted to select a soundtrack that both represented Method as a brand and reflected the individual tastes of those involved in the movie production. It didn’t really make sense to us to include certain types of music solely for variety’s sake, or because of any other outside influence. In my opinion, it seems that many movies operate on some sort of template, like, OK, we need the hip hop track here, and then let’s make sure we mix in some fun club song to show people we’re lighthearted. I am not saying that does not work as intended for some films, but that approach doesn’t make all that much sense to me. Obviously, we wanted the music to fit each rider’s style, but the soundtrack also needed to work within the context of the whole project and what we wanted to achieve.

Did you run into any issues in selecting the soundtrack?

There were certain tracks and ideas we pursued, some of which would have brought different sounds to the film, that for one reason or another we were unable to obtain for this project. We really didn’t want to compromise at all, using a song to fill a perceived need for a certain genre

if it wasn’t the song we wanted. With any luck, this won’t be our last film and we will roll out some of those ideas in subsequent releases!

Were you worried about such a direct approach with the soundtrack, or people who might not be into rock ‘n roll?

We were certain we’d hear from detractors and all the experts out there, as with any creative endeavor, but no, it wasn’t really a concern. We wanted to create a buzz, whether it was positive or otherwise. We wanted to raise some ears, to pair the movie with a soundtrack that was remarkable in one way or another.

It really wasn’t all that complicated, though. The music in the film is a reflection of the music we like to listen to. Some may broadly categorize the soundtrack as “rock”, but for me there are many different styles and elements: metal, blues, soul, psych, thrash, classic rock and so on. It’s about perception, I guess. You could open a whole discussion about what’s more valuable, trying to really psych up a certain audience, or attempting to mildly please everyone.

How important is the soundtrack?

Music plays an enormous role in any film, and a varied one as well. One of the things I’ve always enjoyed about a

movie with a good soundtrack is that you can get hyped up even if you’re not constantly watching the movie. When I was a kid, I can remember throwing on Grenade’s Night of the Living Shred while eating breakfast and getting my gear together. I’d watch parts here and there, but just hearing the songs on that soundtrack would get me psyched as I ran around collecting my shit. I think it goes a long way in how much a movie is replayed too. People replay parts and films because they love the riding in it, but they also replay them because they love the music. A good soundtrack adds another facet tying the viewer to the film.

Favorite track?

It’s tough to pick an absolute favorite, but I am going to go with CCR’s “Green River” because I never thought I’d be able to create a soundtrack that included a CCR track. And it reminds me of nice weather, hot grills and cold beer.

I remember the day really well. It was a Sunday, and we knew it was the only possible day of the trip when we’d be able to hit the spot because the rail went over the road. It was raining so much and it took hours to set up the spot. We were beginning to stress out a bit because we didn’t have lights with us and daylight is real short that time of year. But, luckily, this one was one those spots where once everything was set up it went perfectly. It was great to ride. We all got nice shots in good time, enough time to get pizza after. I shot Mike Ranquet at Purgatory Ski Area in early December 1988 during the first Trials event, which qualified competitors for the Breckenridge World Championships in January 1989. I’d pretty much just started shooting color and up until this point had only really shot halfpipe. How did the park build go for the Legends Session?

Building the hip was fun and we had some good conversations about how the build was kind of the opposite of what I was used to back in the day. “Do not build it any bigger.” OK, that sounds fine.

We made a really fun park. It was a little bit of a struggle with the snow because it got warm very quickly but we had a really good time and made the best out of it.

How about the parties here this week?

I think when a legend gets a chance to go back on tour and experience a little bit of the good old life, they seize the opportunity to grab any beer available and go with the flow. It’s been a fun week that way.

And how about the surf up here at Stad? It was sick that everybody paddled out together.

The surfing was a huge part of the reason for me moving here. The surfing and the snowboarding. I always kind of

felt like this is one of those places that is really special on an international scale because you can do both in such a natural setting. With the ocean gracing us with better conditions than the weather, it turned out to be a great opportunity to have a very relaxed time with everybody.

It was very natural that the surfers were surfing more and the guys who don’t surf were more at the ski resort. It’s a silent goal, really, when you are planning this kind of thing, to have people try both and I think we did. There was one day where we concluded that pretty much everyone except for Peter was out in the water. Between the snow skating, the surfing and the snowboarding, I think this was a combination of old and young athletes that hasn’t really been put together so far in snowboarding. It was special to see.

DCP sure loved it - surfing, snowboarding, and surfing again in one day?

Every time you come together with a group like this, special things happen for the group as a unit, and also, person to person. I think one guy who really had the best experience here was DCP. He

was surfing in the morning, snowboarding after that and then going back to surfing. Perfect for Hundred Wave Dave!

He was definitely the most energetic and was always amping to do something.

I think this place is a good one for a person like him.

It’s really cool to be able to invite everybody here, that’s one thing, but it’s also been cool to see how much support we’ve gotten from this little ski resort. They fully gave us cats and tools and whatever we needed to make it happen. It’s nice to be able to be a part of this with our own company, Stadsurfing, and sponsor a little bit and make it happen. It’s one of those things where you have all these friends who you used to travel all around with and you get to bring them here and show them what we have been up to for the last four years. Who did you get to have some sessions with?

I was just randomly shooting street stuff here in Finland on a couple trips when there was free space in the film crew.

Mostly shooting and riding with Antti Jussila, but I also got a chance to shred with Janne Lipsanen and Jye Kearney.

In what ways was filming for the Method Movie different than the many past projects you have worked on?

For me, it was bit more mellow. I’m pretty used to just running my own program and being in charge all the time, so it was nice to tag along with other riders and just hit spots they wanted to hit. Less planning, and more enjoying.

Would you do it again?

Of course I would film with the Method

First movie you ever filmed for?

The first real movie I filmed for was Standard Films’ White Balance in 2003.

Street riding has changed a good deal since you started, with many new ways to get speed and look at spots. Do you prefer the way it is now, the way it used to be, or have you enjoyed both and just acknowledge that times have changed?

I really like the way everything is now.

There are so many more possibilities in the streets these days. I remember getting pretty fed up when we didn’t have winches yet and the speed to the urban spots was always limited. It just left you looking for a regular handrail with more stairs than the one you hit the year before. It really got boring after a while.

Did you end up playing “Dad” at all during the making of the movie?!

Haha, not really. Or at least I hope that I wasn’t! You need to ask the other guys.

What’s one piece of advice you gave to the younger guys in helping them create a part?

Don’t focus too much on what others

are doing. Always try to do your own thing and think outside of the box once in a while. Stay motivated, focused, and remember to have fun.

Was there a particular rider, or even a particular trick that really shocked you or stood out during the sessions you were at?

Antti’s 50-50 on the park bench to wallie on the trashcan and landing 50-50 on the other bench was super sick.

Whose video segment is your favorite of all time?

Growing up I loved watching Jussi Oksanen’s part in TB8. It’s a classic.

If you could select one song for a “dream part,” which song would you choose?

Something from Morrissey I think. I don’t know which song, though. It would all depend on how the riding footage looked and what fit best.

One location you are still dying to film at?

I would have to say AK, but just some mellow lines and building jumps. I would shit my pants dropping into some of those huge faces.

How did you end up getting involved with the Method Movie?

I was supposed to take it fairly easy this season filming-wise, but I told Antti early season that if there ever was a chance to film with him on some spots, I would be really hyped. In the end we actually ended up doing a couple trips outside of Helsinki in addition to hitting a few spots in Helsinki, as well.

Who were your legends when you first started boarding?

Kelly, Palmer, Salasnek, Sanders and all those early riders. Jeff Brushie, of course. In the beginning you had the VHS tapes of the new movies coming out each year, which was like two or three movies. Maybe you got a hold of one. You’d just check their riding technique and what they were doing and styles and tricks and so on. You were just trying to figure out what’s new and what’s next.

What do you think about the new generation of snowboarders coming up? Who will be the next wave of legends?

It’s hard to say but I am sure there are some new legends coming up. Now, the sport is rolling, people leave and new people come in and the generations are closer and closer. Back in the day, it seemed you had 10 years between the changing over of a new generation. I am sure there will continue to be ripping snowboarders in the future, for sure.

How has it been this last week hanging out with all the boys from the old days who you haven’t seen for a while?

Coming down here and riding with all the old guys is fun. We see each other once in a while but not this many at once. And usually if you run into everyone these days, it’s at some show or something like that, where riding is not involved, so this is cool.

Everybody gets up and does a couple runs and they all still have their own styles and all that.

You’ve been off the grid quite a bit, fill us in a bit on what you’ve been up to.

It’s been ten years since I filmed last and it’s been really great. I am getting a lot of riding in and have been staying in northern Sweden and exploring the mountains around there. I take the snowmobile out and check out some new zones. Ingemar (Backman), Jacob (Soderqvist) and I are running a resort together, as well. We’ve got that going and we get some good riding in. It’s cool; the resort is down more iin the forest so December through February it’s really nice tree riding with powder.

You took the snow skate out with Terje, must have been cool to have your own private little mountain?

That lift was running and we just kept taking runs on the snow skate. It was good slush that day, really good corn slush.

Where did you travel in filming your part for the Method Movie?

I was lucky enough to film 90 percent of my video part in Finland and did just one trip to Estonia.

Who’d you spend the most time with on the road while filming?

Janne, Jye and of course, our filmer, Mikko.

Tell us about living in your RV. What was it like when you lived next to Ruka snow park?

Those times were the best. We had my dad’s old caravan next to Ruka snow park for about five years. At that time it was pretty common in the northern Finnish snowboarding scene to have a caravan at a resort. I used to stay there all weekends, holidays and even skipped a couple weeks of school to stay there. I was just riding as much as possible and having good times with my friends. We used to collect all the bottles from the sauna and take them to the shop to get money in order to keep the high life up!

(In Finland you get money for recycling cans and bottles.)

Did you get towed into any spots this year on your moped?

Ha, no! The one in my part was our filmer’s 30-year-old moped. On one of the trips we did to the city where he lives I had to drive to the spots on his moped because we couldn’t fit all of us in his fully packed van. That was one of the fastest rides ever…35km/h.

What is the most unusual way you’ve ever gotten speed for a spot?

A couple years back we tried to get speed with a double bungee. It was before the winches. We had six guys pulling two ropes and I was the guy who had to test out our new Bungee2000 for the first time. I grabbed the ropes and it threw me in the air for maybe five meters in a Superman position. I ended up on my face, and will never try that again!

Do you like using winches or bungees?

I wouldn’t say that I like using the winch but I’m pretty used to it nowadays. I’m not a big fan of bungees because they can easily drop under your board or

even get stuck on you or your board and that’s really scary! Natural speed is the best.

When you’re getting ready to film a part, do you come up with a plan or shot list, or do you just get out there, scope the spots on the fly and see what happens?

I’m always planning the next video part during the fall and sometimes even a year before when I’m filming and I know that I could do something different the next year. There have been times when I haven’t been able to hit some of the spots I’ve wanted to hit during a season so I just postpone plans for the next year. I’m always trying to improve everything I do.

What can be most frustrating about filming a part?

That feeling when you just can’t get the trick is really frustrating, but in the end it gives you a motivational boost to make the most out of the next spot.

Most rewarding thing about filming a part?

In general, the most rewarding part is when you actually see all the shots you have managed to film during the season in a full part. It’s also a great feeling when you land your trick and immediately know, “that was it,” after putting so much effort into a spot.

How do you deal with the weather not cooperating with you when you’re trying to film?

Normally, if we have planned to go film something on certain day, we will do it, even if it’s -25 degrees outside. Sometimes heavy rain can stop the session because it makes the lenses blurry.

Tips for staying hyped/warm during a Finnish night session?

Drink loads of coffee and have a wild crew to keep your mind hyped.

What was the wildest session of the year?

This one time when we were filming in Lahti, Finland in the middle of night this guy ran up to us to ask for a cigarette.

Jye gave him a cigarette and we thought that was all he wanted. Right after he got the ciggy lit he started asking us, “Is everything OK?” “I’ll kill you…” The guy was sweating a lot and high on drugs. After a couple minutes of repeating the same

sentence he took bullets out of his pocket. That’s when it got scary. Jye started to back off and so did I. Then the guy left. I don’t want to know what was going on in his head. After this I started hitting this 40-or-so meter long kink rail until it was 5:00 am…

One trick that got away from you?

I tried to drop from a roof into this bank with a late FS 180 in my hometown. I’ve been thinking about it for years, but I twisted my knee a little bit on the second day trying it so I had to stop hitting it. Maybe I’ll go back next winter.

One trick you are really psyched you got?

My opener trick, the gap to switch boardslide 270 out, got me really hyped.

Any injuries or hang-ups this year?

I somehow managed to get my edge stuck at the yellow rainbow rail and flew over the whole thing. My shoulder popped out but luckily went straight back in. That was a really nasty feeling.

Did you learn any life hacking skills during this whole trip?

I learned how to make American coffee, ha!

Tell us a good story from Japan…

Well, it´s hard to explain if you weren’t there, but they have this 10% Japanese vodka they sell in like a 10-liter tank.

We went for some night powder laps on the local hill near our apartment and Halldor brought that vodka. We took a couple of sips after every pow run, and it was the best snow I have ever ridden. It was so much fun and after a bit we were pretty fucked up. It was the best feeling in the world though, drunken pow laps.

Can´t complain.

Simon P. aka Swagman, Ethan Morgan aka Eggman, and myself, Breadman. I basically did everything: CEO, baker man, sometimes part-time bacon man, juice man… Whatever the boys need, I´m the man.

What drove you to be the bread man you are?

I kind of always knew I´d become a well-rounded bread man one day. I’ve been working very hard on this for the last couple of years so it´s really satisfying to see that all my effort has paid off and the boys have chosen me to be their bread man. It’s like a dream came true.

Simon’s farts; I´m pretty sure he’ll die soon. It just smells so freakin’ unhealthy.

When you’re getting ready to film a part, do you come up with a plan or shot list, or do you just get out there, scope the spots on the fly and see what happens?

No, I don´t really go out with a plan. I just try to look for cool, creative spots first and then think of a fitting trick. Of course, there are always certain tricks you want to have in your part, but I think cool spots and style are way more important.

You had a pretty gnarly slam in the backcountry this year?

Give us a little rundown of what went down.

Yes, it was the first time getting hurt for me. Needless to say, it was not the nicest experience. We built a really poppy jump at Arlberg with a short landing. We played Roshambo to see who would hit it and I lost. The jump had a really steep inrun as well, so it was kind of hard to guess the correct speed.

I had filmed all my safety tricks already so I kind of had to send it on the first try. I took way too much speed, ended up spinning a frontside double 12 tail straight to the bottom of the landing and knocked myself out a lá knee-to-face. Broke

Yeah, I guess it wasn’t too bad. I could ride a mere three weeks after the accident and even went on one last street trip up to Kiruna five weeks after.

What was one shot someone got on one of the trips this year that blew you away?

Jonte did some insane spots this year, most of them being big gaps and cool street lines. Oh, and Simon did one hell of a front board pretzel.

Did you have a favorite spot from the season?

Maybe the pow jump Max and I were hitting in Japan.

That was really fun and the airtime felt insane on a switch backside 5.

Was this your first Japan trip? How does Japan stack up against other places you’ve been?

Yes it was, crazy country and people. Most of them are very friendly, but nobody speaks proper English so we were hav-

ing a hard time communicating some of the time. The cops weren´t too stoked on us hitting spots in the streets so next time I go there, I´ll probably focus on pow. Ja-pow is just unbelievable.

Did you go to the hand job bar as well?

Haha, nope. Luckily Max talked me into riding pow since it was my last day of the trip (I had to leave early because I was finishing my bachelor thesis). It turned out to be one of the best days of the season! We both stacked and had a good laugh telling Ethan what he had missed out on for a 20 second hand job, ha!

You had a bit of a tough winter this year. How’d it all unfold? What went down?

It all started of pretty well with a Nitro trip to Finland, then Estonia with Method and then one month in Asia. I got back in the middle of February and was supposed to take it easy for a few days before going down to the Alps with the Method crew. However, a crazy looking wooden kink had been built not far from where I live that I wanted to ride, so I did. It just looked so different and crazy with all those short, steep kinks. I had to give it a go. One hour later the ambulance picked me up and tried to stabilize my arm, which was broken really badly. That was the end of that season!

How are you feeling now?

The doctors told me I shouldn’t ride for a year but after some arguing we

agreed that I could start off easy after six months. So I went to Chile with Rip Curl after less then five. It was a really fun trip and the arm passed the test, but I went all in on the rehab, and yeah, now it feels good again.

Have you ever hit a rail with that many steep little kinks?

Nope.

Do you do anything to your edges to prep for wood rails? We’ve heard stories of dudes in Tahoe taking their edges completely off to hit all those classic wooden rails.

If I were to slide a wooden rail, I would definitely take them off! On all my street boards I take down the edges.

How many trips to the hospital have you had in your career?

There have been a few - that was the second time I broke my arm. I’ve broken my collarbone twice, dislocated my elbow, pulled muscles, had problems with the ligaments in my ankle for quite some time and there’s more. But that’s part of this. The pain is not the bad part; it’s not being able to ride that really sucks!

Favorite video part of all time?

That’s a tough one! There are so many parts that get me hyped these days and I can’t say I have one particular favorite part. Jeremy Jones’ old part in The Resistance just came to mind. That was so sick growing up, and still is.

Do you prefer a frontside or backside hip?

Backside if it’s a big one and frontside if it’s a small one.

Tennis player! My granddad played a lot of tennis and we have been playing now and then since I was a kid. Just a stone’s throw away from where I grew up there is this old, beat up tennis court where I went to skate and play tennis as a kid. I still do sometimes!

Japan this year was good, but I think British Columbia a few years ago takes that one.

Not really, at least nothing too sketchy and I’ve never been buried in an avalanche. First time I rode pow, though, (and it was very deep!) I remember falling and struggling for a while to get back up on the board.

Did you break anything?

No, I was super lucky. Nothing happened other than it getting incredibly swollen.

And then you went back up and tried it again?

I blacked out after the bail, so I could not really ride anymore that day. But what really sucked was that I did not get a single shot from the spot that day except the bail. So when we got back to Helsinki I decided to stay in Finland and wait for a few more days to hit it again, just to get something from the spot. It took a really long time for the swelling to go down, so when I hit it again a few days later, I still looked like shit.

Damn! How long was it swollen for?

Yeah, I guess that’s true. If I have a shot or spot in mind, I always envision the shot in my head. If it looks good mentally, I want it to look the same in real life. And when shaping the spot, I always want everything to be perfect

I’m a Nazi when it comes to shaping the setup!

When you’re getting ready to film a part, do you come up with a plan or shot list, or do you just get out there, scope the spots on the fly and see what happens?

I usually have some ideas in mind on spots and things that would be cool to find, but the best moments are when you find the most banger spot without having it in mind.

One trick that got away?

Lowe Anderson, one of our filmers, and I went to Östersund in Sweden to film this big, classic down rail that I had a trick for. I landed a switch BS 270 on the rail but did not get it perfect, and I had been eating too much shit to keep on hitting it. So we ended up spending three days in Östersund, fucking up Lowe’s car, and spending way too much money just to go home with a shot that was not good enough…and lot of good bails.

Best type of taco?

ho’d you spend the most time with on the road while filming for the Method Movie?

I had the pleasure of hanging with a lot of the Method Movie crew. I always try to mix it up throughout the season. I was mostly hanging with Team Breakfast, as in Breadman (Flo) and Swagman (Simon). Definitely good times with the squad.

Any injuries or hang-ups for ya?

Yeah, I actually had two injuries this season, but the timing was more than perfect for me.

I broke my elbow at Rock A Rail in November in Holland and it took six weeks to rehab that, so I was back ready to go in January when the season started for me. The first trip was right away in Japan with Flo and Max. That was a treat after doing nothing for six weeks. Then I broke my ribs on my last trip filming for the Method Movie in May. Funny thing is the timing on that one wasn’t as nice. I dropped in on a mellow street line when Kuske had the camera out for the first time on the trip and just didn’t think about the closeout in the line, and straight taco’d it. But the trip still turned out good for me. I took a day off and went straight back at it and got my last few shots for my part, maybe with pain, but it was worth it.

Weirdest moment on the road?

There were definitely a lot of weird moments in Japan. Countless actually, but I think the weirdest moment was when we found this perfect down rail in a small town outside of Otaru.

We started shaping it, and then there was an earthquake. We all freaked out, but after two minutes it was all good. Then a Japanese guy came by in his small car and started to try to explain something to Diggles (one of the Method Movie filmers), so he just got in the car with him and left Flo, Max and I alone at the spot without saying anything. We finished shaping and there was still no sign of him. An old lady came and wanted to kick us out of the spot, so we left to look for Diggles, and all the while he was at a police station that was just around the corner. Our friend Teddy Koo was on the phone talking to the police officers explaining what we were doing, so they let us ride the rail without the permission of the old lady. However, we only got two tries. That was it. The police were wearing helmets and using light sabers to guide the traffic. I luckily landed those two tries, we thanked the officers, and we left. It was a fucking random day. So weird.

Worst smell on the road?

The smell in the hallway of the hostel in Sundsvall. Twelve pairs of boots in one tight hallway got kind of nasty after 10 days.

Spot that scared you the most?

It was definitely the gap to down on the double down with the landing between a ledge and another rail. I have never been this scared on a street spot before. Every try I hit it was a bail that made it into my part. I also broke my board, got a new one, kind of “landed” it sketchy, and tried it again to get it better and then knocked myself out. I called it a day after that.

Best way to get a cop to leave the spot?

Tell the cops we are making a documentary for the city and that Sage Kotsenburg, gold medalist, is with us filming. Usually works.

Worst way to get a cop to leave the spot?

Give him your passport at the first spot you get busted at and then get caught by the same cop again in that same night. He was not pumped on us at all. He wouldn’t leave us alone.

Did the sweatpants ever make their way out of the bag?

Unfortunately, no. I will have a sweatpants comeback soon, but since I got NEFF as a new sponsor, they sent me normal snowboarding clothes, and it’s really good stuff. But I told them I want to have a pro model multi-functional sweat pant for the winter. I hope that will go down soon.

The secret to no grab spins?

Open your jacket and just enjoy the airtime.

When will you start listening to your homies when they tell you that you will break your board at a spot?

Probably never. It’s always important to have at least one board breaker shot in the part. But, if I land it, then it’s an even better shot. So why not try?

How many broken boards for this part...?

I think two or three. I hope Bataleon is not pissed at me for that!

What´s going on with poopypanoramas?

Oh, you should check it out! It’s my top-secret Instagram account. It mainly runs in the wintertime when I am traveling. I always have to take a shit somewhere when I am at a spot, or in the backcountry, so I look for the best view for me to enjoy the shit, and take a picture of the beautiful scenery including the dump. But psst!!! It’s top secret, I guess.

What was it like to miss out on the best Ja-pow day, hungover from a creepy night in Sapporo at hand job bars?

I don’t know what Flo is talking about with that! It was flat light, and he got two B shots. I got at least 30 minutes of A footage of Pinkman strolling through Sapporo like a king and got an amazing HJ the next day. I would say I didn’t really miss out too much.

One spot you guys hit in the movie that is way gnarlier than looks?

I did a pretty scary roof gap that I had to hand-build. I shoveled for an hour on top of the roof but ended up getting kicked out. So we went and got a burger, then headed back and snuck in after business hours for the late-arvo commando sunset session.

You’re a pretty mellow cat; do you get serious at spots?

Sometimes, yeah, but mostly I just try to keep it real! Fun times all around!

How’d that go? How many stitches?

Yeah, first time getting stitches for me so it was pretty funny. I was freaking out a bit and ended up getting five stitches in my shin in Japan. They didn’t speak much English, and I’m pretty sure they stitched me up financially, too.

Got any other crazy hospital stories for us? Doesn’t have to be from this movie.

Yeah, I’ve got a few… A few years ago in Mammoth I got a concussion and was taken to the hospital where I logged a $3,000 bill. Lucky the travel insurance covered that later. One time I got a ring stuck on my finger when I was sixteen.

I wanted to get a tattoo and thought going in pretending to be married would work. Turned out it didn’t and when I went to take it of, well, it was stuck. It

took two hours to cut it off in the ER in the end. Mum wasn’t stoked when it turned out to be her wedding ring.

Apparently when I was three years old I went missing in the Gold Coast hospital and they had security shutdown the joint. My oldies were freaking – I was missing for like 30 minutes and I was finally found four floors up. I must have been joy riding the elevator.

Where’d you get the umbrella you rock in your part?

A Japanese lady at the 7-Eleven. Those stores are on every freakin’ corner!

You got a nifty little move with that umbrella in your part. Did you ever own those Soap shoes that you could grind shit with?

Haha, I used snowboards boots. I got a couple funny grinds with ‘em.

One trick you are really psyched you got?

We built this natural quarter pipe right in the middle of this city and I stomped an alley-oop Mctwist, which felt cool. We put some solid hours into building the jumps, so to get some good hits with the boys afterward was sick.

There were a few. One that really broke me was this epic gap to rail that I was trying to back lip, but I kept snapping all my boards.

Oh yeah. Unfortunately I had ankle and rib problems. On one hand it really sucked, but it made me improvise on the way I ride and it turned out well in some ways, too. My part would have been pretty different if I hadn’t injured myself, but I am actually pretty stoked on how it turned out.

What can be most frustrating about filming a part?

Not stomping tricks is tough. It is so frustrating and really becomes a mental battle, especially after spending hours shaping a jump.

What about the most rewarding part?

Seeing the final part for the first time and seeing the whole movie succeed.

Favorite video part of all time?

The Japan section in Neverland always stokes me to go ride.

ny problems with the police at any of the spots during the making of the movie?

Luckily, we didn’t have any problems with the cops. Normally cops in Finland are really cool with snowboarding, as long as you don’t disturb other people too much and you clean the spot after you are done.

You also need to choose a good day and time to hit the spots in hectic areas.

When the cops do come, what is the best way to get them to let you stay?

Just be friendly and be respectful to them.

Let them know that you are not breaking anything and you will clean everything when you’re done. You can also tell them that snowboarding is your profession.

They are normally just scared that you will break the spot or yourself.

Favorite spot you sessioned?

It was the yellow rainbow rail I hit with Antti and Eero. Such a fun spot to ride and it looks good in the footage!

Worst smell on the road?

Probably the night after that rainbow rail... I slept with Jamie (Durham, our filmer) in the smallest motel room you can find.

Spot that scared you the most?

I think it was the jump I hit for the BS 720.

It was my first day filming backcountry and the snow was not very good. I wasn’t sure at all if the landing was soft or not.

First tries are always kind of scary.

What’s it like hitting spots with Eero?

Did it make you nervous?

Haha, no it didn’t. It was just fun to have a new rider in the crew. Eero is really good, for sure, and really knows what he is doing.

Pretty much the whole backcountry epicness got away. I injured myself just when the good snowfall came to Alps. It sucked a lot.

How can you make a skier laugh on Saturday…? Tell him a joke on Friday!

You and Antti are both really solid when it comes to one-footers. How did you get into that? Did any particular rider inspire you?

No, not really any particular rider. I have always liked to try new things and I love the feeling after landing a new trick. After I learned the regular one-foot stuff, it felt right to try to do different ones and try to add them on spins and flips.

What is one trick that will never go out of style?

A good old method.

Greatest city/location for street riding and why?

I love filming in Finland. As I said, people are mostly open-minded and stoked about the job we do. I would say Turku (in the southwest of Finland) would be the greatest city to film in Finland. It has such nice architecture and many untouched spots, but there is rarely enough snow, though.

How was it to go up to the Legends Session? Had you ever gotten to ride with those guys before?

I really enjoyed our time in Norway! It was such a good crew cruising together. I had met some of them in contests back in the day, but yeah, this was basically the first time I really got to ride with them.

Did you overhear any crazy stories from back in the day?

Some good ones for sure! I had an interesting talk with Peter Line about how snowboarding was back then and how he developed and named popular tricks like the BS rodeo.

Did you surf at the Legends Session?

Any barrels?!?

Yeah I did, and there was actually really good surf there! No barrels, just longboard cruising.

It looks like you went on a pretty epic sailing trip this summer? Do you know how to sail a boat?

Oh yeah, we had such a sick week sailing from Helsinki to Åland on a big old wooden boat with about 15 people. It was my first time sailing and I can tell you it’s a really chill thing to do in the summer.

Now, I wouldn´t do the same trip alone, but I’ve learned some things, for sure!

However, if everything works out it’s the best feeling, especially when you find a new spot in the backcountry and are unsure at first if it will work but then it does. You can be really creative out there as well, which is pretty cool. I really want to try to get into the backcountry more next season.

How long did you have to battle for your ender shot?

That was definitely the longest battle I had last season. We set the spot up the day before and it took me basically the whole next day to get the shot. I had to walk like 2000 steps that day, but the feeling I got when I got the shot made it all worth it.

Any injuries or hang-ups for you this year?

I had a couple nasty bails but only minor injuries.

Favorite session during the making of the Method Movie?

Our first trip to Sweden, for sure. We were 10 guys in total, split into two crews everyday for shooting and all hanging out together at night. Everybody had the chance to hit the spots they wanted, there were really good vibes all around and mucho clips, too. Basically, it was the perfect trip.

Had you ever been to Japan before? What’s something you really like about Japan?

The trip last year was my first time ever. I really liked the small sushi triangles they had at every supermarket, and that they had far more than two meters of snow when we had hardly any back home.

Strangest thing consumed during the making of the movie?

It was probably a pork windpipe we had in Japan. It sounds pretty gross, but it was not even that bad.

treet snowboarding has a long and impressive history in Finland, and with a couple local lads on our movie roster, a trip into this Nordic nation was an absolute must in the making of the film.

This past March, Antti, Eero and Janne played host to Simon, Jye, Flo, Jonte and Ludde as they rallied beyond the capital city in search of untouched zones.

hen I think back on the Sweden trip, I could laugh for 10 hours. It was my first time going on a street trip with that many riders: Ludde and Jonte as the local boys, Ethan, Flo, Simon as the IBK crackheads, and me, half IBK, half Italian pizza mambo. And of course, you can’t forget Jye, our lone Australian, and the sickest dude on the planet.

I wasn’t sure how it would work out at first, with different riders, different spots, different styles and two different filmers. But dang, how it worked out! We all stayed in one dope apartment; one of the filmers, Jonny, aka Carbonaraman, made the best pasta for everyone and we had great evenings all together as a crew.

From the first day we knew this trip would be one for the books. Simon and I decided to hit this wooden A-frame rail and had told Ludde he should come straight to the spot since he was already two days late on the trip. Of course, he was late again, but Simon and I just got warmed up while we waited. I got my trick the fastest I’ve ever gotten a trick in the street, in maybe 10 minutes. Then Simon jumped in there and nailed his trick really quickly as well before King Ludde, straight out from the car, sent a heavy scorpion while going for a random gap to boardslide on the the softest wood of all time! Luckily, it was all good and the next try he sent it to the moon and broke the whole fucking rail into three pieces. Gold!

Ah, and then there was the newspaper spot! This one was a rail line in between two apartment buildings. After a trip in Japan, I was used to being kicked out of spots after two seconds. Of course, not in freakin’ Sweden! We dialed in a oneand-a-half hour session, Simon got the hammer line and Ludde and I got shots as well. Ludde was getting ready to try a different line as a car rolled up and two random dudes with camera equipment jumped out. They told us that the boss from the whole apartment area called them and that they wanted to do an interview, and film and take photos for the local newspaper. We did a couple sketchy tricks and I almost died on a backtail/zeach-smith combo. The next day, I walked into the gas station and the back smith photo - shot one second before I ate shit - is right on the cover of the newspaper! No words. So sick, ha!

Another thing that was obvious on this trip and has remained in my mind - besides that the Swedish people are awesome and helped us out with their baggers to shape our in-runs - is that there is often a moment where one of the guys is killing it so hard at the spot that you just sit down and watch him get it. One of these guys is Jonathan Lindhe!

On the last day, at the last spot, he went flying up this ramp thing and 50-50’d down the roof of a house. It’s the craziest

thing I’ve seen in a long time, and it was so smooth!

All in all, it’s fair to say that the Sweden trip was the best trip I’ve been to so far. Good times with good riders, good snow and really nice people, and the most importantly, it was a hell of a lot of fun while filming in the streets, which is not always the case. Big shoutout as well to Diggles, Johnny and Tengs for killing it behind their cameras!

hat makes a person a “legend”? Is it their age? Their strength? Their endurance, originality or testicular fortitude to try something that everyone says is impossible? We are not really sure, but there is a group of snowboarders who fit in a loose binding box labeled “legends”, who we cherish and are always happy to see on a board. We revere them for what they’ve done in the past and where they will ride in the future. Even if it is just a smooth turn or stylish grab, the weight of witnessing a legend move is monumental. All those years spent looking up to them, analyzing, learning and mimicking that move you’re watching… That enduring influence is what makes them legends. A piece of them is represented in our riding. Every time we ride, they keep riding.

We decided to gather some of these OGs in one place to do some late-spring slushing in Norway for the Method Movie “Legends Session”. This powwow of casual cruising and surfing included names like Haakonsen, Porcheron, Olofsson,

Line, Ranquet, Soderquist and Stevenson to rattle off a few, and was hosted by the epic “surf farmer” himself, Mads Jonsson. A fun little course was shaped with mellow jumps and some solid tranny to let these legends give ‘er without totally blowing out their worn ligaments. A juicy hip was shaped for the younger guns like Tonteri, Crepel, Bang and Lipsanen to blast on, and to tempt the older riders into seeing if they still got it.

All in all, it made for a great riding soup, with some old sauce mixed on in with a smattering of fresh ingredients to make the Legends Session a quite tasty one. The days were endless, with morning shred sessions in the mountains and afternoon barrels in the sea at Stad. Every time you ride and send a method like Terje or throw a rodeo like Peter Line, you keep these legends alive. It’s all interconnected.

It was a blast hanging out with some old shredder legends. Just catching up and hearing what they are up to these days was great. Riding with Mike and Peter was really good, and you could see how a person’s riding style never changes.

It’s good to see old friends who are still riding and still liking it. It’s always great meeting up. Even though we may have not seen each other for many years, you still know the guys like brothers and give them a lot of shit. Simple pleasures.

At one point, I feel like I did have a responsibility of looking after the next generation, of keeping snowboarding cool, and core and style-oriented.

Nowadays, I don’t feel that as much, because I have the generation after me and a couple generations after them who do that. I taught the ones after me, guys like Danny Kass and JP Walker, to keep it kind of skate style, to keep it cool, keep it fun. Those kids taught the next kids and those guys taught the next kids and so on. Till this day I watch kids snowboarding and they are still having fun with style, doing really cool, fun tricks, and technical tricks too, that look really good. I learned it from Ranquet and Palmer and the generation before me, and it’s still going the whole way down. Don’t make snowboarding kooky.

The best thing about the Legends Session was DCP surfing, snowboarding and surfing again in one day! He was so happy! Seeing all the boys in town was rad.

The Legends Session was unforgettable!

First off - the location. It’s not every day you have your own resort with the keys to the lift in one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Also, it’s super fun to shred with old buddies and friends who you haven’t seen for a long time. I think it’s been 10 or 15 years since I last saw Ranquet and Paeter. One of the best memories was when we sat at the bottom of the lift and Ranquet started commentating (harshly) and roasting the old men doing their best on the small jump at the bottom.

I haven’t laughed that much in a while.

Another good memory was when Mads told me how he sometimes dives in the fjords to hunt the two meter catfish. Basically he swims down, grabs a hold of the fin on the back and rides along for a while.

Kind of like an underwater scooter. When he is done with that he simply brings out two knives and, with both hands, stabs the fish in the neck. Gnarly! He’s a fucking viking. Big ups to Mads for the hospitality and to Method for putting this together. So much fun.

There were a lot of good times, but the best part about the session was all the storytelling. It was so interesting to hear stories from back in the day. Another good memory was doing a backside rodeo in front of Peter Line smoking a ciggie, ha!

It’s cool meeting up with friends you’ve known 20 or 25 years. When said friends are the most influential and powerful riders of the last 20 years and the whole lot of us is fucking around on two meter kickers is when it gets fucking rad. Not too many get to see Terje sans grace; Peter Line sans technical riding; Johan & Jacob sans igloo and fishing lures; Mikkel Bang sans podium and Drew Stevenson sans beer (kidding)! But I did, and it ain’t pretty. I fucking loved that trip. I loved seeing all the different riding styles and eras represented without any pressure. I have been waiting a long time for this, everyone being reflective of the influence we’ve had on one another and snowboarding as a whole. Aristotle was correct in saying the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The best part of the session was that you could wake up at the beach, surf, drive up to the hill, snowboard, go back to the beach, surf, have a wicked dinner and beers and then do it again the next day. Epic! Also, it was pretty funny seeing Johan, Ranquet, Mikkel and Drew trying to stay up and drink for over 48 hours. Classic! Bang, bang, won!
