MET COUNCIL’S HELPFUL TIPS - KEEPING SENIORS SAFE AT HOME

SAFETY - PROOFING YOUR HOME As we age, our motor skills and ability to balance begin to decrease, making it easier to trip or bump into things. To keep safe, follow the simple tips below to safetyproof your home. Make sure to share these tips with an elderly friend or family member! LIVING ROOM • Create and maintain open walkways by moving furniture and boxes, and organizing clutter away from walkways. • Choose sofas and chairs with arm handles to help prevent falls. BATHROOM • Avoid using electrical equipment in the bathroom. • Ask your super or a handyman to put your water heater thermostat below 120 degrees. • Be sure the bathroom door can be unlocked from the outside in case of an emergency.

BEDROOM • Move lamps, space heaters and other heat sources away from your bed. • Keep a telephone close to your bed. • Do not use heating pads or electric blankets while sleeping. • Place your glasses and other necessary items on a nightstand next to the bed. KITCHEN • Wear short or snug sleeves while cooking. • Clean spills when they happen, especially those on the floor. • Keep sink areas and stove tops clear of cords and appliances. • Avoid removing cleaning products from their containers and pay attention for labels that say “Caution”, “Warning”, or “Danger.” • Post reminders and important information, such as a medication timetable and emergency numbers on your refrigerator. Met Council helps 4,500 seniors and families in need remain secure and independent in their homes every year.
