Revell’s kit is a magnificent model with some fine detail in its undercarriage and engines. Boeing’s corporate markings come as standard

The cockpit suffers from a too-shallow floor but this is fixable. A flawed but detailed kit and a fantastic subject choice

MONOGRAM, USA 1:24 BEER WAGON ITEM NO; 2453 www.revell.com This is a fun kit from nearly fifty years ago and it still raises a smile! Remarkably crisp mouldings and some decent detail is in evidence and the generous chrome sprue has some richly plated goodies on in.

REVELL, USA 1:25 ‘48 FORD POLICE COUPE 2 ‘N 1 ITEM NO; 4318 • www.revell.com Kits of police cars always make attractive model projects and Revell USA’s ‘48 Ford is a peach; it can built stock too; the tyres can be reversed to reveal the whitewalls. An additional chrome sprue provides the police lights and big ‘40s siren. Marvellous!

A large and superb sheet of decals offer markings for two RN and two USN machines from the 1950s

ITALERI, ITALY 1:48 RF-4E Phantom II ITEM NO; 2737 • www.hobbyco.net This is a kit with quite a long history that has seen many changes in its moulds. TOWER, THIS IS GHOSTRIDER REQUESTING A FLYBY... ...NEGATIVE, GHOSTRIDER, THE PATTERN IS FULL! We printed the first photos of Tamiya's magnificent new 1:48 F-14A Tomcat back in the July Issue. Now a pre-production kit has arrived at TMMI HQ, we can really see what it looks like, up close.

T

amiya's newest and perhaps most long-awaited addition to the 1:48 Aircraft Series depicts the F-14A Tomcat, the US Navy fighter that fulfilled the dual roles of long range interceptor and air superiority fighter (later bomber). The aircraft also played the star role in the 1986 film 'Top Gun', which spawned many a cheesy quote...

Deployed from 1974 to 2006, the F-14 successfully employed 'swing wing' technology which offered variable sweep to the wing, enabling higher top speeds and controllable lower speeds for accurate and safer carrier landings. The F-14A, which covers most early variants, was the most prolifically produced variant of the Tomcat. Seventy-nine were exported to Iran before US Iranian relations cooled; these later took part in the Iran-Iraq War.

SOME CHANGES

Since the initial announcement of the kit, Tamiya have made a couple of subtle but key changes to the model. It will now include an Iranian IRIAF markingsoption plus fuel probe and bay parts for this version. Also, the parts to recreate the air-to-air missiles are now included

in the kit and not sold separately as originally planned. From our inspection of the sprues of this pre-production kit (it goes on sale later this year), it looks like Tamiya have done what they do best; they've created a detailed, accurate replica of the subject in the form of a precisely engineered kit that is a pleasure rather than a chore to build. There's no unnecessary hidden stuff that you won't be able to see on the completed model, just beautifully engineered injectionmoulded parts sporting subtle airframe detailing and exactly the right level of detail in the cockpit. In this particular model, the presence of the two man crew is very appropriate; somehow the Tomcat just looks better with the crew in their seats, or perhaps that's just me getting carried away with the Top Gun theme...

tarting at 11am for cocktails then later for a drinks and dinner... Too bad the Suzuka 8 Hours does not take place in Le Gers or the edge of the Mediterranean! In any case, this is a very popular endurance event, because it is where drivers gather to take part in big competitions and showcase the tremendous reservoir of Japanese drivers; a true Japanese Bol d'Or...

So here are the riders we already met there and they were all winners: Wayne Rainey, Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan, Doug Polen, Colin Edwards, Dominique Sarron, and most recently Casey Stoner, Valentino Rossi, Bradley Smith, Pol Espargaró. Among the competitors we may also mention Tadahiko Taira, Tohru Ukawa, Noriyuki Haga, Shinichi Ito, the late Daijiro Kato, Nobuatsu Aoki, Ryushi Kiyonari, to name but a few! Of particular note is Mike Baldwin and David Aldana who won the race in 1981 riding the Honda RS1000. This bike was an evolution of the CB900F, itself heir to the RCB1000, which had run previously in the endurance class.

The RS1000 used a four-cylinder, air-cooled engine that developed nearly 150hp; this machine has a killer look without its side fairings. It reveals – if immodestly – its most intimate details and in terms of mechanical model it is a wonderful playground to try to some superdetailing.

Tamiya has understood this by re-issuing the kit recently, adding up to date decals by Cartograf.

The moulded parts are perfect and build with precision as usual, regardless of the kit's 1982 vintage. The stages of assembly, in the following pictures will give you an idea of what's possible with such a good quality model. I would point out however that I made a few adaptations of my own, described in the captions. I warmly thank my friend Dominique 'Domi68' for the excellent documentation and references.

I conclude by thanking Tamiya for making these re-editions that allow 'younger' modellers like me to experience the raw charm of those great machines of the 1980s.

Let's hope the Kawasaki KR1000F is next! ●

The rims received a coat of TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black and only the spokes of the front wheel were masked off before applying a layer of TS-83 Metallic Silver.

Normally, the rear wheel would undergo the same treatment but many photos from the era show mismatched wheels, such as two black or two silver, or both!

Screws in photo-etch dot the frame and mechanical components. Using the Top Studio brand, they are pre-cut and presented on a self-adhesive sheet. A micro-drop of cyano was enough to hold them firmly. The result is much better than painting these details

Tamiya's braided hose is high quality and comes in two diameters; 2.6mm and 2mm. There are no connectors of this size, so they need to be made from hexagonal profile rod of 2mm and 2.5mm

Initially, sections of 2.5mm hexagonal styrene rod were drilled out to create holes of 2mm in diameter.

The edges were then lightly sanded to round-off the angle of each 'nut'

Tamiya’s 1:48 Panther is an exquisite little model and the only thing it lacks are the all-important mesh screens that cover the intakes on the engine deck. In this set Aber provide all seven screens, the louvres the were found on the Late version of the tank plus other tiny fixings.

The block was painted TS-17 Gloss Aluminium, the carburettors in Citadel Black, TS-21 White Gold and Tamiya primer. The hoses were replaced with thinner tubing

LOW RIDER WITH ATTITUDE Tamiya's new 1:16 radio-control Jagdpanzer IV /70(v) Lang has arrived at TMMI

T

he latest model in Tamiya's 1:16 RC Tank Series depicts the WW2 German Jagdpanzer IV /70(V) Lang. The Lang (German for 'long') in its name was added to distinguish it from its predecessor which was equipped with a shorter L/48 7.5cm gun. The design featured a wedge-shaped glacis plate and utilised the Pz.Kpfw.IV chassis, largely shared by the L/48 and L/70 types. Nine hundred and thirty Jagdpanzer IV /70(V) Langs were produced between August 1944 and March 1945 and they fought tenaciously in last-gasp actions such as along the Ardennes front

from December 1944. This tank destroyer, which proved formidable following its introduction late in the war, was a popular release in the 1:35 Military Miniature Series in 2014 (35340) and now it has a big brother which should appeal to fans of large-scale RC armour.

Tamiya released the 1:16 RC Panzer IV ausf.J in 2008, thereby creating a set of running gear for this vehicle family, but we have had to wait eight years to see the creation of a another Pz.IV variant in the form of the new Lang. In fact, only the road wheels, some castings and internal equipment has been taken from the Pz.IV

ausf.J kit, the rest being entirely new for 2016.

As with the majority of Tamiya's RC tank models, the lower hull is formed from pressed aluminium and even before the installation of the rear hull plate it feels pretty rigid. To this are fixed (via self-tapping and machinescrews) the suspension elements which are mostly moulded from super-tough ABS plastic for strength.

The two-wheel bogie units are fully workable of course, and function exactly as the real things do, or did.

double-wheel units. The latter are moulded in ABS and feature synthetic rubber tyres that slip over the rims for an ultra realistic appearance.

The model is propelled by two powerful Type 380 electric motors, running through a pair of pre-assembled gearboxes.

Power to the motors is governed by a T-03 DMD (digital twin motor differential) Control Unit which in turn is plugged into a four-channel RC receiver of the modeller's choice. The kit comes with motorised main gun elevate/traverse functions, as well as a recoil effect that shunts the barrel

(in machined aluminium) backwards upon firing and jerks the whole vehicle back slightly at the same moment, to enhance the effect. To really press home the main gun firing, a stroboscopic bulb is positioned in the muzzle, flashing when firing takes place. It's enough to bring out the excited nine-year old child in any adult. Sound effects are included of course and courtesy of the MF-05 DMD Multi Function Unit, we are treated to engine-running sounds plus main gun and machine-gun reports.

ZIMMERIT SOLUTION

Some Langs were coated with the ridged 'zimmerit' anti-magnetic mine paste and to simulate this, Tamiya have included with the kit a set of printed self-adhesive decals carrying threedimensional texture. Once trimmed out and positioned on the hull this looks pretty good. For an even more realistic effect the modeller can apply this paste his or herself, using an epoxy modelling putty such as Tamiya Epoxy Putty or Milliput. You can, of course,

leave off the zimmerit entirely, as not all Langs carried it.

All you need to add to the kit is a four channel RC system and associated batteries and charger, plus the usual model cement and paints; Tamiya's XF acrylics are perfect for this.

It's true that this is a model for those with deep pockets, but if you can run to it, this kit will be a joy to build and paint and has a second life as a working model with multiple special effects built in and they never get

here are already a couple of kits of this big bruiser on the market in 1:35 (Meng and Xact-Scale) and now, Russian producer Zvezda have released their contribution. It doesn’t come with an engine, so it’s instantly a more straightforward build; this can be an advantage or a negative point depending on your view point, but it does have a fully detailed

crew cabin and driver’s station and Zvezda have done admirable work here. The interior structures assemble onto the one-piece floorpan moulding and inner sidewalls and there are more than enough parts to create a busy appearance inside; the machine-gun drum racks are particularly well done.

Although there’s no full engine there is a sump,

a lower portion of the gearbox, prop-shafts and differentials, all of which are overlaid by the chassis, so the underside detail is by no means compromised, in fact it’s extremely well detailed. The rear crew doors can be fitted in the open position to show off the interior, but the modeller will need to make their own hinge detail to fit the driver and passenger doors opened up, which is a slight shame, but no deal breaker.

High-points in the kit are the separate liners for the crew doors, the individual window frames with integral wipers (which look very convincing), the cleverly designed suspension and the exquisitely detailed, in-scale towing cable for the cabin-side.

Despite of, or maybe because of the lack of a engine, this is a very attractive model of the modern Russian military’s armoured personnel vehicle; the only add-on it really needs is a set of DEF Model’s brilliant resin wheels with weighted flat-spots. ● MN

VORSPRUNG DURCH ROOFRACK Ádam Harsányi modifies Revell's 1:24 Audi R8 to the PPi Razor GTR Extreme spec

F

irst of all, I have to tell you, I’m not a big R8 fan. I wasn’t going to build the Revell kit at all, but when I saw C1 Models' transkit for the PPi Razor GTR, it was love at first sight! So I bought the set and decided to build Jon Olsson’s PPi Razor, which has a full carbon-fibre body. It seemed a good idea but it wasn’t as easy as I thought at the beginning.

The transkit itself is a nice piece of art, starting with the first-class black box and outstanding packaging. It contains plenty of resin parts; the whole body, rear bumper, wheels, a full V10 engine, exhaust system, seats, engine bonnet, roof box plus some other smaller parts. The quality of the castings is really good and there weren’t many bubbles and no warping. In the box there are also some metal transfers, two sheets of photo-etch and one sheet of clear plastic with three different kinds of hood window. The only thing I missed very much is an assembly guide, which would have made life easier, especially for the PE parts!

I started the build with the interior. Most of the parts were used 'out of the box' but the pedals, shift gate and the floor mats are from PE and the seats are the resin ones. After a primer coat, I painted the red trims and stripes according to reference pictures of the original car’s interior.

I then masked them off and sprayed everything carbon grey. On the door cards, the dashboard and even the seats there are some red stripes, which I made from red ribbon. I fixed them with Tamiya acrylic gloss clear, then sprayed all the interior parts with Vallejo matt varnish for a smooth and solid finish.

The carbon fibre decals on the dash and steering wheel were finished with the previously mentioned Tamiya gloss X-22 Clear, using a brush. On the gear knob and steering wheel, the thin red lines were made of red wire, found in a broken earphone cable. To bend the wire into shape I used a round tool (small screwdriver) and 'glued' them with Tamiya Clear before the matt varnish.

UNDERPINNINGS AND ENGINE

The next step of the project was the assembly of the chassis and suspension. There is nothing much to mention here, I just followed the Revell instructions. A piece of the back of the chassis had to be cut off as a resin diffusor replaces it. The only problem I found was the fitting of the V10 engine.

First of all, it is longer than the original V8, so the front of the engine came closer to the cockpit, which was fine as there was some room for it, but the front wall of the engine bay cover (which part should be glued to the body from inside, part 57) was in the way and had to be cut out a bit to allow room for the intake cover on the top of the engine.

The other problem was to find out where exactly the V10 should sit on the chassis...

V BODYSHOP Next step was the body which is well cast with only few

small bubbles on the bottom, which were easy to fix.

The rear bumper fitted well, but I had to sand it at the panel lines for complete accuracy. The side skirts are cast together with the body, but there's a pair of optional ones in the transkit as well and I decided to change them as Jon Olsson’s car had those ones. It is easy to cut the side skirts off with a Dremel and fix the new ones with super glue.

The fit of the bonnet wasn't great, as the panel lines were too wide and they weren't consistent; the whole thing looked odd on the body. This issue stems from the Revell kit and C1 didn't fix it before they made the new hood, so I had to do it myself. I used 0.5mm styrene stripes for this, gluing them on the edges of the bonnet with superglue, then filing them down where necessary. I always do a dry fit to avoid these issues at final assembly. It is easier to fix them at the beginning than realise at the end that it looks ugly!

The rear wing’s uprights had also some issues; the holes on the body were too far apart and were also too big, so I puttied them and engraved new ones. Problem fixed, the uprights now sat in the right place. There weren’t any other issues so I could start the priming. For this I used Tamiya grey primer from the can, then painted all the parts that would be covered with CF with Finisher’s carbon black. This is a good base for the carbon-fibre decal as it's almost the same shade of grey as the decal itself, so if it tears it won’t be too visible.

COMPOSITE METHODS

Covering a model car’s body with CF decal is not an easy task, so you’d better polish up your decal-applying skills!

Your best friends will be decal softener fluids and the hairdryer; after a couple of weeks you will have grown some grey hairs for sure! You have to plan the areas of the body you want to cover with pieces of CF decal. It is better to follow panel lines and edges for borders because when you apply the decals, the joints shouldn't be too visible. Then, you will also need templates for the CF decal as well. It is much easier to cut out the approximate shape you want from the sheet than try to apply a big piece of decal and cut it on the model's surface.

SEAL IT ALL IN

After the CF challenge and several test-fittings of the body and to chassis, I was ready to apply the clear coat. I used a simple 2K clear-coat in two layers and after forty-eight hours of drying, I started the polishing process. For this type of clear-coat, two layers are more than enough. It doesn't look that thick, especially on the edges, but it's deep enough for sanding and polishing. I started with P2000 wet sandpaper to eliminate the orange peal texture, then wet P2500 to clear away the most of the biggest scratches. After this, I started the actual polishing. I used 3M three-step polishing compounds; the green, yellow and blue capped products. The first was the green, which is a coarse grade compound that gets out the scratches from the clear-coat.

Rolls Royce Silver Ghost ‘Kegresse’ 1921 – Lenin 1:43 resin & metal kit by ABC Brianza Each brake was built up from three parts; a resin middle and PE front and back. They are nice, but the pattern of the holes should be Ferrari style because the original Audi had carbon-ceramic discs. After painting them with a mixture of metallic grey and gunmetal, the pattern problem was not that visible, so I was happy with it. I upgraded the wheels with metal air-valves and lug-nuts, both from Tuner Model Manufactory. I also changed the tyres to Aoshima rubbers.

C1's tyres were not that bad, but this kit deserved better!

FINAL JOBS

The final task in this build was to attach of the rear wing and roof box.

The wing was easy to set up, but the roof box didn’t have any fixing points, so I had to do it myself. I used 0.5mm metal rod to fix the front of the box in place, drilling two holes on both the roof and the bottom of the box and that was all. On the back there

was no chance for this, as the wing is pretty slim, so the box just sits there peacefully...

Overall, this was a really interesting build. It caused me some sleepless nights but after all the struggles it turned out to be one of my best model cars yet! I’m pretty sure I won't be building a full CF body car in the near future, I need a bit of a rest after this one! ●

was in France 1939. L1679 was Richey's regular mount until it was destroyed on 10th May during a raid on Mezieres. After hearing how it was 'sieved with bullets', Richey lamented, "I can only hope she burned before the Huns could lay their rude hands on her”!

as the distinctive ‘kidney’ exhaust ejectors, a Venturi and separate casting of the ventral fin running along the underside of the fuselage to the rudder. Armoured and non-armoured windscreens are provided. The famous Watts two-bladed propeller is a very good representation and, as the battle in France developed at a rapid pace during this period, so was the need for a faster fighter, so PCM have thoughtfully added a three-bladed De-Havilland version too for ‘later’ early-mark versions.

Overall, the PCM kit parts are of a high standard, three well moulded main sprues with little or no flash, crisp panel lines but lacking the finer rivet detail details I would have expected in this scale, as the panel fastenings around the engine cowl are quite out of scale and look like doughnuts, but nothing a little careful sanding won’t fix. The kit features some beautiful surface detail and accurately, and subtlety represents the fabric surfaces on the wings, fuselage and rear stabilisers which other manufactures tend to overdo in my opinion.

The clear mouldings are suitably thin, but the canopy part was a little cloudy in my boxing but cleaned up just fine with a little polishing compound and a dip in some Future floor polish. There are a number of nicely detailed photo-etched parts including the instrument panel, radiator grills, seat harness and a few cockpit components. The kit is surprisingly lacking other cockpit sidewall details and offers little more than a 1:48 kit. The resin parts are all very well moulded and offer four and five spoke wheel versions, early and later exhausts, a superbly represented wheel well and undercarriage assembly and various cockpit details.

The decal sheet is supplied

by Cartograph and no less than six marking options are available for a range of nationalities; three RAF, one Finnish, one Italian and one Belgian – choice enough for the most discerning modeller. All decals are beautifully printed and colours are in register.

CONSTRUCTION V INTERIOR I had learned much about

this kit through building the later version a couple of years ago, so I was much better prepared to deal with the trickier parts of construction and I was not surprised when faced with exactly the same issues (although fairly minor) with this early version.

Working in 1:32 has given me the opportunity to learn and develop many new techniques – especially when it comes to detailing, weathering and finishing touches (this scale is also a lot easier on the eyes!). So, not feeling happy with the lack of detail in this scale, I felt I needed to make a few adjustments and additions to the basic kit, which I have outlined below: •Sutton Q harness by Radu Brinzan •Scratchbuilt seat cushion from putty •Gunsight glass, wiring & brass sighting bar on cowling •Cockpit wiring/equipment •Rebuilt castoring tailwheel •Navigation light bulbs •Brass canopy handles •Canopy rails •Radiator actuators •Dorsal identification light •Rudder mass balance and actuator cables •Additional rivet details Starting with the cockpit which, as stated earlier was surprisingly sparse straight from the box, I felt it required additional side-wall component detail and wiring using styrene rod and Plus Model lead wire in various sizes, 0.2mm to 0.6mm. The kit components went together without any trouble and progress was made quickly. The etched instrument panel is offered in three parts with the dials on an acetate sheet sandwiched between. I applied a small drop of Micro Krystal Klear to create the effect of the dial glass. Acrylics were used for the instrument bezels, buttons and various knobs and levers. The starter button below the instrument panel was constructed in three parts using solid brass rod and brass shim (and gave me the opportunity to try the brilliant Waldron sub-miniature punch

set). The punch set came in handy again for the Gunsight glass and wiring was added.

The control column was detailed by adding additional wiring, a brass firing button and a brake lever. The aileron linkage was made using lead wire ‘squeezed’ with a small pair of pliers to create the individual link effect. The meticulously detailed Sutton Q harness set by Radu Brinzan is a

real work of art! Constructed from over fifty parts comprising paper straps and photo-etch buckles and grommets, it builds into a very realistic and satisfying representation of the real thing. I used a very small amount of light brown oils to colour-wash over the harness straps to give them some depth and drooped one over the side of the cockpit as seen in many photographs of the period.

EXTERIOR CONSTRUCTION AND DETAILS

The fuselage halves went together well but a significant ‘drop’ appeared one side of the fuselage just forward of the windscreen.

No matter how hard I tried to line it up, it just wouldn’t work, so I let the whole thing dry and used green putty to fill and sanded smooth to fair in with the rest of the fuselage; issue number one.

They do say bad things come

in threes, however...

A small amount of filler was needed on the cowling and on the underside where the wing centre section meets the fuselage. A major fit issue I encountered again was the joint between the radiator and fuselage. There is a large, raised moulded section on the underside wing which I assume is supposed to accommodate the shape of the radiator but the area was larger

‘step’ between the fuselage and radiator. Some fairly rigorous sanding eradicated the step and created a better join with a minimal amount of filler required; issue number two.

There was also a fairly large sink mark on the underside/flap section so more green putty was needed to fill it adequately.

The panel fastenings around the cockpit area and cowlings are moulded quite clumsily but some light sanding was all that was needed to rectify the problem. I added some rivet detail on the wings and around the leading edge using a modified Hasegawa rivet wheel. The result was very subtle and I was not sure how well it would show up after the final paint job.

With fuselage and wing sections completed, I mated the wing section to fuselage with a very snug fit but suddenly noticed a very large hole in the bottom centre of the wings…I had forgotten to fix in the resin wheel-well to the inside lower wing section…issue number three, but my fault though. So, with the well in place, wings joined with fuselage once more but not nearly as snugly as before.

The top of the wheel-well was interfering with the cockpit so needed sanding down until it was almost see-through. Even with this done, the wings still did not mate properly as before so required some filler at the upper wing roots. I would advise fixing the upper wings to the fuselage and dealing with the lower section separately in order to avoid these issues.

PAINTING AND MARKINGS

The camouflage is the standard A Scheme of RAF Dark Green/Dark Earth with black/white undersides for identification. Gunze and Tamiya acrylics were applied in various shades and consistencies to create fading and wear. Montex masks were used for the codes and all other markings were sprayed too.

I love the weathering stage of the build and this one I felt required a reasonable amount of dirt and grime,

as the real aircraft would have spent most of its time on a muddy airfield in Vassincourt. As well as the usual post-shading, I experimented a great deal with the oil rendering technique and what I enjoy most is the unexpected effects that occur when the oils are fully dried out; you never quite know what will happen. Mixtures of black, brown, and yellow were used to build up very thin layers of oil washed into various areas, left to dry and then reapplied until a satisfactory result was achieved (I would advise a good quality, odourless turpentine for prolonged use of oil paint).

I find oils very forgiving as the slow drying times make them ideal for re-working if things go wrong, and can be completely removed in order to start again. Of course, this all takes time but the results are well worth it. A final coat of Vallejo Matt varnish mixed with a little satin sealed everything in with a light dusting of MIG pigments to pick out areas that were lost with the flat coat and she’s done!

CONCLUSION

A kit not without its faults but they are minimal and with a little patience, easily overcome. I think it offers beginners enough opportunity to develop detailing skills and techniques without being too burdensome, but looks great straight from the box too. For intermediate and experienced modellers, it offers scope for a great deal of superdetailing and builds into a very convincing representation of the real thing. My second outing with this kit and again I have found the project very enjoyable indeed – a highly recommended kit! ●

IT'S EDUARD STEEL! Finding realistic-looking, easy to use seat harnesses for model aircraft projects can be a real pain.

But Eduard might just have the solution...

T

he task of fitting realistic-looking harnesses to model aircraft pilot's seats can be a real fiddle. If none are present on the kit part you can make your own using thin metal foil, masking tape or similar which is fine if you have the references and the skills to make them. You can also ditch the kit seat entirely and use an aftermarket resin item with the belts cast in; an excellent option but there's a chance that the precise seat you need won't be available. Another alternative is to use pre-formed photo-etched harness parts, which have been around for years. Some are better than others but they are often too thick or over-simplified, however Eduard have come up with a new range of harnesses that are formed from ultra-thin steel rather than the more traditional brass, making them more resistant to metal fatigue during bending and positioning.

You might think that steel would be much too springy for this task but the particular alloy chosen by Eduard is very malleable and easy to work with

and its extreme thinness does look very scale-like, particularly for 1:72. Having taken a belt from one of our sample sets and given it a good bending around, it would also appear that the paint used for the pre-colouration is much more flexible and less likely to flake than before, which was perhaps the major drawback of earlier pre-painted belt sets. The buckles are integral with the webbing and there's even some subtle shading on the straps where they meet the hardware, adding to the realism. If you're a 'frequent flyer' so to speak and regularly build model aircraft, it's well worth checking out these new sets. MR T COMES TO TOWN! Pat Johnston describes the building, painting and finishing Tamiya’s T-34-76 in 1:48

T

he T-34-76 tank was a design developed by the Soviet military in the early years of the Second World War to counter the threat posed by the deadly effectiveness of the contemporary German tank designs. In order to 'thicken' the tank’s armour, the designers decided to try something innovative; to slope the armour at an angle, which not only gave it more thickness but it helped to deflect incoming rounds upwards, away from the tank’s interior. Combining this feature with wide tracks for soft terrain, and a simple, efficient diesel engine gave the Soviets what is widely considered the most innovative tank design of the war. In fact, this design has influenced all future tank designs, including most tanks built around the globe today.

This tank has been very well served in the scale model world, in all scales, but for this article, I will be dealing with the

simple but elegant Tamiya kit in 1:48 scale. The kit is one of the company’s older 1:48 releases, and it comes with few parts, and the somewhat ugly white metal lower hull tub, but with some care it can be built easily into a gem of a model. I used no aftermarket items on my build, but there are many sets to choose from, companies such as Hauler, and RB Models, all have great additions for this kit at very reasonable prices. My modifications and additions were all done from spare parts around the work bench, and some creative uses of copper and brass wire, along with some stowage items from the spares box. All my scratchbuilt details are not above the skill level of any intermediate modeller, and all modifications will be called out to easily be seen, and if so desired, emulated. Follow along, and I’ll hopefully show what can be done to create a detailed miniature from a very simple kit, with no stress!

The one fender I did not remove was thinned from the underside with my Dremel rotary tool, and dents and damage were added to simulate bent sheet metal

I made a scavenged road sign from a scrap plastic dowel and the signs are styrene strip. Also note the scratchbuilt shovel, made from styrene rod and scrap lead foil

I raided the spares box to find some items of scavenged loot for the T34’s crew. Again, I used lead foil to make all the loose strapping. This strapping will give the stowage a more natural sit on the finished model

I carefully shaved some numbers from a scrap The turret grab handles and tie downs were made sprue with a new #11 blade. These were glued to with small pieces of copper wire the turret side to simulate foundry casting numbers

I drilled out the kit’s moulded engine deck screen and I fabricated a new one using scrap aluminium screening with a frame built from strip styrene.

Ground sage was used to replicate the built up mud on the hull rear

Since this sign post needs to be sprayed in a I simply sprayed the entire model in Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black, this is for two reasons; first, the rest of complicated pattern, I started the paint work on this the sign post will be black, and this colour will also be the primer for the rest of the model. I could then model by base-coating it in Tamiya XF-2 Flat White mask off the rest of the sign post

For my models, I have found that every step of my weathering tends to darken the finish, so I start with colours that can be seen as too light in tone.

For this model, the base 4BO Russian green was a mix of Tamiya XF-71 Cockpit Green and XF-73 Dark Green (JGSDF)

This shade was sprayed in several thin, misted coats to ensure good coverage over the entire model, with just a hint of the black pre-shade showing through in corners and on edges

The first step-in the camouflage colour application was now complete

Gunze Sangyo’s excellent acrylic #320 Dark Green was sprayed gently over the top areas of the model and in the centres of panels. This is to further add contrast to the finish, almost a pre-weathering step

With the green base colour finished, I could now remove the masking that covered the paint on the sign post

The model now needed a good gloss coat in order to apply the decals and also to protect the finish from the harsh weathering treatments to come. I prefer to use Future Floor Wax (Johnson’s Klear in the UK)

Here are my weapons of choice for decal application; a sharp No.11 blade, tweezers and Gunze Sangyo’s excellent ‘Mr. Mark Softer’ decal setting solution

After many trials, I have found that the best way to flatten the gloss on any model is to use a mixture of Vallejo’s 70.520 Matt Varnish with a healthy drop of 70.540 Matt Medium. I use only their own 71.361 Airbrush Thinner

This is the beginning of the oil-paint work. My first step was a simple overall colour-wash or 'filter'. The first step involves the Winsor & Newton oils 25 Lamp Black, and 35 Raw Umber

Several thin, misted coats are always preferable to ensure smooth, even coverage

A small drop of each colour was deposited on the palette

A splash of odourless thinner was now added. Humbrol thinner works great for this task, but any good quality thinner will work

This very thin mix was lightly brushed over the entire model. This will ‘warm up’ the colour tones and eliminate the ‘frosted’ look sometimes left behind from many acrylic flat coats

The model must be left to dry overnight, as oil paints require a long curing time

After the washes were dry, I could then apply some lightly coloured ‘negative’ chipping. This is an effect to simulate light scoring in the paint exposing newer or lighter paint underneath. I used a size 000 brush and a light green oil mix

Deeper scoring, exposing bare metal, was simulated by repeating the step using Lamp Black oil paint. The black is garish, so care needs to be taken to not overdo the effect. Practicing this on a scrap model is recommended

I also use dark oil colour to replicate water streaks on the hull. I placed a drop of colour at the 'top' of the run and used a clean damp brush to blend it. The more you work it, the more translucent it becomes.

Again, practice is recommended

Here we see all the oil colour-washes and chipping are complete. The effects can really bring a monotone scheme to life

www.hannants.co.uk Trumpeter's 1:35 kit of the mighty SCUD B missile launcher vehicle is a hugely impressive model in its own right, but Voyager of China have created not one but three sets for the kit that can potentially take it to whole new level of detail and intricacy.

The main set (35737, shown right) comprises six photo-etched brass frets, each around 9cm square. Thanks to clever planning, each fret is jammed with parts to up-detail just about every area of the vehicle, including tool boxes, chassis fittings, mounting brackets for airbrake cylinders and much more; grilles, brackets, locking latches, aerial base, warning light shroud, missile bay liners, tie-downs, mudflaps, the list goes on. Suffice to say, if it's not in this set, you won't need it.

A second, single-fret sheet (35738, below right) provides details for the cabin interior and even though it's one sixth the size of the main set there are still heaps of tiny parts here. Finally, for those just wishing to upgrade the very prominent hydraulic lines of the launch system, Voyager offer a pack containing in-scale vinyl tubing, resin hydraulic headers and PE brass end fittings, below left. An extremely thorough suite of upgrades for an already highly-detailed model. Just add DEF Models' weighted resin wheels/tyres and you have a mega-project just waiting to be built. As shown in the instructions, the best way to fix them is to drill an appropriately sized hole in the model's surface, trim the rivet off the moulding plug with a little of its 'tail' still attached, then pop this into the hole. Alternatively one could slice the domed rivet head off flush and glue it to the model's surface but its back surface will need to be perfectly smooth for this to work. Very useful indeed. It comes in a large box, containing eight substantial sprues of mid-green polystyrene, plus the upper and lower hull, clear lenses, nylon cord and waterslide decals. The tracks come in the form of linkand-length; long upper and lower runs, shorter front and rear ‘liftup’ sections plus individual links to wraps around the idlers and sprockets. They are of the cementtogether type and not articulated.

There are small ejector-pin marks every few links on the inner faces of the runs but they could quite easily be filled/scraped off. If you prefer articulated links, Friulmodel make a set in cast metal (ATL-75) which could fit Zvezda’s mouldings.

Detail is impressive throughout, reflecting Zvezda’s massive advances in quality over the last few years. The kit’s instructions are clearly drawn and easy to follow and two markings-options are provided, both in overall dark green. The subject is fantastic and it will make an impressive 1:35 replica that will dwarf many smaller tanks in an armour model collection. MN

ITALERI, ITALY

M1120 HEMTT LOAD HANDLING SYSTEM www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO; 6525 The M1120 HEMTT LHS is a new release from Italeri and features new parts to create the container loading system plus new tyre mouldings and more. The underpinnings and cabin of the kit date back to the mid ‘90s, when the company’s M977 HEMTT was initially released. It was widely acknowledged as an excellent kit back then and it still stands up well to current standards. A good thing about models from that period is that they weren’t overengineered; they were designed to represent the subject accurately and in good detail, without resorting to multiple hundreds of parts. The chassis rails must be shortened slightly for this variant, and some other modifications made, but this is all shown in the instructions. To re-create the M1120 LHS, Italeri have included two substantial new sprues for the cargo deck and its specially designed Multilift crane, plus all the associated ancillary parts such as tie-down loops and the chassis end-structure which features the rollers that guide the new cargo lift-deck into place on the chassis rails. Italeri’s heavily revised kit is a largely accurate depiction of the M1120 LHS and can be built ‘stock’ for an excellent result. MN

GERMAN RHEINMETALL LONG-RANGE ROCKET RHEINBOTE (RH.Z.61/9) AND LAUNCHER www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO; CB35048 The 1943 Rheinbote missile was developed to augment the heavy artillery of the WW2 German army; it could travel at 4,200mph carrying an 88lb warhead. It was used against Antwerp but its combat impact was minimal. It is, however, a fascinating subject for a model kit and Bronco have chosen well. In this release the rocket is depicted on its towable launcher, a modified gun mount from a the Flak 41 which Bronco already offer in kit form; the cradle is replaced with a new elevation block and launch cradle which is seen in red oxide primer on the box artwork. The mount is made up from a huge number of parts (including PE) to form a very highly detailed replica. The missile itself looks reasonably straightforward to assemble, with the key to success being the perfect alignment of the multiple fins. Three colour schemes for the Rheinbote are suggested (overall grey, silver and green/silver) and the mount can be painted in plain dunkelgelb, or with a little threecolour camo on the shield. MN

1:35 7.5CM PAK.40/1 AUF GW.LR.S(F) SD.KFZ.135 MARDER I www.hannants.co.uk MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.PH-35006 This is an all-new kit of the diminutive Marder I which mounted the German PaK40 anti-tank gun on the Frenchbuilt Lorraine chassis, within an improvised fighting compartment.

The kit makes use of novel assembly method for the running gear; the leaf-springs, bogie frames, suspension arms and return-rollers are moulded in just two halves each side, with the road wheels being trapped between them. An interesting solution where some fun, postcementing clean-up opportunities might arise. Or it might just work really well. The tracks are of the cement-together, individual link type and a moulded jig is provided for the assembly of the upper run including slight ‘sag’. Overall, the detail is of a good standard and there are some pleasingly delicate structures on the sprues.

A modest photo-etched fret is included, the most important part of which is the exhaust-box shroud. MN

STURMGESCHÜTZ III AUSF.E (SD.KFZ.142) www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, TMZ, CW, WS ITEM NO; CB35118 Bronco have created a new kit of the Sturmgeschütz Ausf.E and from an inspection of the kit parts it appears to correctly incorporate all the modifications made to the earlier StuG ‘B. The engine deck sports individual access hatches which will be good news for anyone wishing to install an aftermarket engine. The brake access hatches at the hull front are individual too. The main structures for the gun and its mount are included, which will be handy if one is leaving the commander’s and gunner’s hatches open, although nothing else is provided internally.

There are some nice touches in the kit; the rear hull flanges are provided in PE, as are the brackets for the aerial troughs and engine intake screens. The tracks are moulded in kit plastic and are articulated via tiny track-pinks; an assembly jig is included. The fendermounted tools are finely detailed and the fenders themselves are beautifully rendered. From a modelling point of view, the ausf.E popular variant of the Stug. MN

REVELL, EUROPE

STAR TREK ANNIVERSARY SET www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:500, 1:600 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO; 05721 It’s amazing to think that in September this year, Star Trek will have been around for fifty years; it’s as old as TMMI’s Editor!

To celebrate this, Revell have boxed up their superb 2011 kit of the USS Enterprise (from the original TV series) and their equally excellent 2013 kit of the ship from the ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ film (2013) to create this special ‘Anniversary Set’ which in itself is likely to become quite a collector’s item. Both kits are modern toolings and exhibit some very nice detailing on their outer surfaces, mostly recessed but raised where appropriate.

The porthole apertures of both kits’ hulls are moulded open, with clear parts included for the windows, so the creative modeller could install lighting if they wished; there appears to be plenty of space inside the hulls to allow this. Decals for the newer ship are extensive (less so for the classic craft, but still plenty of options) and display bases are provided for both. A great way to celebrate this TV science-fiction milestone and two superb kits are in the box. MN

CLASSIC WESTERN STAR 4964 www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO; 4964 The plastic parts of this truck kit date from 1989 but that’s perfectly okay as Italeri’s trucks have almost always been fine productions. In this latest iteration of the 4964 model we have a new sheet of decals to spruce up the cabin and sleeper in a very American style – highly appropriate for the truck – and they look great over the plain white. The model features a detailed replica of the straight-six turbo diesel, its ancillaries and drivetrain. The chassis builds up from multi-part crossmembers and rails and this makes the whole model more satisfying to build in our opinion. The cabin is well detailed too, with foot pedals and sprung seats plus CB radio and even a bed and pillow in the sleeper box. The wheels are ‘chrome’ plated and are shod with semi-pneumatic black vinyl tyres, which themselves feature sidewall data and convincing tread patterns. A great-looking truck and a highly detailed kit of it. MN

LOCKHEED VENTURA MK.II www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO; 04946 Revell’s Lockheed Ventura was originally issued in the form of a US Navy PV-1, built by Vega, a division of Lockheed. This machine had a ‘solid’ (unglazed) nose with three .50cal machine guns fitted, for strafing runs. The Ventura Mk.II had the earlier bombardier’s station in the nose, with four windows each side and a glazed nose cap mounting a pair of machine guns. Revell USA issued the Mk.II in 2014 and now the same kit appears in a Revell Europe box. The whole of the nose section is moulded in two clear halves, with the modeller masking off the windows, a far better solution than a having to cement clear window panels into opaque parts. Detail within the bombardier’s station is spartan but it’ll barely be visible on the finished model. The kit also includes the Boulton Paul dorsal turret, which is appropriate for the RAF version of the aircraft; its clear dome is moulded in two halves and installs via a fuselage insert. That’s what we have here too, with two new sprues in the box to create the US Army UH-72A Lakota variant. As you might expect with a kit that has undergone several changes, there are parts marked ‘not for use’ so be careful to take the correct components from the sprues when building. As this is a personnel/transport ship, the cabin is equipped with rows of seating (each seat with a mouldedin harnesses) with little other equipment present, although three items of stowage are provided for the small cargo area behind the final row of seats. The airframe’s exterior surfaces are detailed with correctly raised rivets and they are extremely well done; the kit has done well over its eleven-year lifespan. Two schemes are offered, the three-tone camouflaged heli depicted on the box and an overall gunship green scheme, both US Army. IDF MAGACH 1/2 BATTLE TANK 2 IN 1 www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS; IM, SVT, PE, MC, WS ITEM NO; 3565 Dragon’s recent M48 Patton MBT has many possibilities, perhaps the most logical of which is the Israeli ‘Magach’, of which a whole series was produced, using the M48 and later the M60 as basis for conversion. In this boxing, we have a ‘2 in 1’, allowing the modeller to construct either the Magach 1 or 2, which featured many differences, large and small. Different engine decks are provided, plus a new muzzle brake, replacement trackguards, new tool brackets and other fittings. One really needs to read up on the Patton in IDF service to ensure all details are correct for the specific version being built, but Dragon appear to have done a good job here. As is all too often the case in Dragon models, the instructions are as clear as mud, so that research will really be important; treat them as a rough assembly guide that needs interpretation by the modeller.

Detail-wise, the kit excels with superb surface relief across all exterior parts. The tracks are Dragon’s ‘DS’ paintable flexible plastic. Decals are provided three IDF tanks plus one for the arguably more visually appealing Royal Jordanian Army machine in sand/green camouflage. SU-76I SOVIET SELFPROPELLED GUN www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, PE, WS ITEM NO; 6838 Considering just one letter of the alphabet separates them, the SU-76i and SU-76M – the latter released recently by Tamiya – are completely different machines. The SU-76i was based on captured German Pz.III chassis (mainly gathered after Stalingrad), repaired and modified with a Soviet-built casemate that mounted a ZiS-5 76.2mm main gun. Over 1,000 of these vehicles were made, which gives a clue to the scale of the German defeat in that campaign. Dragon’s kit makes use of their excellent, if slightly overengineered Pz.III components, plus of course new parts for the fighting compartment; the gun barrel halves are sourced from Dragon’s T-34-76. It almost goes without saying that the tank parts are finely detailed and the new mouldings comfortably match this standard, with weld seams between the armour plates and cast-steel texture all well depicted. A very interesting conversion and an appealing kit. MN

ITALERI, ITALY

IVECO HI-WAY 40TH ANNIVERSARY www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO; 3919 We like Italeri’s truck kits at TMMI; they are well designed, packed with detail inside and out and look impressive once complete. This IVECO Stralis design was initially released in 2013 and since then it has received new parts and decals to create differing variants, the latest being this 40th Anniversary edition, celebrating four decades since the company began. The kit comes with a six-lamp light-bar on the rooftop plus light-strips under the front bumper and along the sides. New decals feature of course, and the sheet is quite large and crammed with markings.

The main ‘40 years’ logos are white and sensibly broken down into manageable sizes to help the application process; the modeller just needs to paint the bodywork areas metallic blue. The kit retains all the mechanical loveliness of previous releases of course, with a highly detailed chassis, engine and drivetrain beneath all that glitzy bodywork. MN

Of the many books that have been produced on the vehicle, this new volume by Lee Archer is perhaps the most modeller-friendly as it presents superb quality, wartime photographs of the diminutive tank-killer in great depth, printed large and sharp on high-grade paper, many across the whole page. This allows the images to yield their detail for the modeller to examine and there’s a lot to see here. Some of the pictures are begging to be re-created in diorama form, in particular the overhead views on pages sixty-two and sixty-three of a vehicle freshly commandeered by Czech freedom-fighters. As well as the storage boxes and jerrycan hanging off it, we can also observe gas mask holders, a tarpaulin, helmets and even what appears to be a walking-stick stowed on the hull sides! It’s a real-life modelling cliché and an image that will hopefully have you reaching for a kit.

As a reference source, this second volume on the Sd.Kfz.233 schw.Pz.Spähwagen 7.5cm, Pz.Fu.Wg Sd.Kfz.263 and the oddlooking Panzermesskraftwagen is going to be hard – if not impossible – to beat. As with all the recent Nuts and Bolts editions, the depth of detail is staggering, with heaps of wartime photos (over 130 pages) plus scale drawings (in 1:35), excellent colour artwork, ‘walk-around’ photo section and a modelling chapter showing Tony Greenland and Vinnie Branigan’s models in detail. Another unmissable from the N&B guys, add to your modelling library in confidence. MN

LEE ARCHER, KAMEN NEVENKIN, PANZERWRECKS www.adhbooks.com ISBN; 978-1-908032-14-0 Panzerwrecks No.20 is here and it is the third in the ‘Ostfront’ (Eastern Front) series. Image quality is down a notch compared to previous editions but there is a very good reason for this; the wartime photos are taken from Russian Central Military Archives wartime archives on the 17th Air Army while evaluating the effects of Soviet air weapons on Axis armour during the battles around Lake Balaton, Hungary in 1945.

So in a way, the book is also a study of aerial warfare as well as about ground-armour, which makes for fascinating reading. The publishers have included some absolutely superb colour artwork by Felipe Rodna throughout the book, based on photos (also shown) to clarify the details, camouflage and markings. A wide variety of machinery is depicted, from the humble Panzer IV, Panther, Hetzer and Stug to exotica such as the Möbelwagen and Hungarian Nimród anti-aircraft tank. A slightly different approach this time and as ever, an extremely interesting read. MN

The mighty He177 Greif (Griffon) is described in seven impressive photos taken at Brandenburg Briest airfield in December 1942 and we see a PK cameraman filming into the canopy of the bomber from a servicing platform; it would make a terrific diorama. Details of the aircraft’s airframe exterior are seen, along with its markings and camouflage pattern. Some fascinating original wartime colour shots show Zellhausen airbase – twenty-four kilometres south of Frankfurt – as a model of organisation, far from the chaotic operating bases later in the war. The photos date from May-June 1940 and almost look like a model diorama, a point picked up on by the authors. More types are included, and the chapter called ‘Photos with a Story’ about the shooting down and capture of Flt. Sgt Alastair Arnott is unmissable. MN

I

have to make a confession before I start this article and say that at the time of writing I have not yet seen the Batman vs Superman film. I am a life-long reader of Marvel and DC Comics but due to circumstances and reviews that the film is best enjoyed by aficionados (and at nearly three hours running time not wanting to test the patience of my significant other) I decided to wait for the inevitable DVD release. Whilst I have been initially impressed with the design of the latest incarnation of the Batmobile I think I will withhold final judgement until I see it in action. Produced

by Moebius Models, the 1:25 Batmobile comes in approximately eighty blue-grey parts with a single

clear part for the windscreen and is accompanied by a comprehensive instruction sheet with colour photographs of the completed model.

I have another confession to make: as I build a lot of figure kits and do quite a bit of scratchbuilding I have got out of the habit of following instructions, but I quickly realised that due to the complex form of the Batmobile some careful reading was going to be required and, as I discovered, test fitting was going to be a must. The other realisation I had was that the majority of the kit was going to have to be painted before assembly as there would be no way to mask off some areas that would be impossible to reach once constructed. Having

said that I did start off by working my way through the instructions and completing as many sub-assemblies as possible prior to painting, sometimes bypassing the recommended construction sequence.

ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE...

The first thing to do was to try and work out what colours to use. A criticism I have heard levelled at science fiction and fantasy modellers is that we don’t have to do any research because the subject matter is not 'real'. This is true to some extent when painting an original subject (but even then we need to observe materials in real life to appreciate how they should be finished), but when painting a model of vehicle

or character from a film or television programme finding the correct colours is often easier said than done.

The instructions describe the body colour as Dark Gunmetal Grey with a matte or semi-matte finish, and based on the images I could find of the Batmobile I am not going to argue. I chose to use Vallejo’s range of acrylic based Metal Colour paints as their Steel is a very close approximation to my references. I decided to use their Dark Aluminium for the engine, chassis and other mechanical parts. Vallejo produce a gloss primer specifically for the Metal Colour range but as I wasn’t looking for a high sheen finish I decided to use a standard matt black primer from an aerosol.

Once the primer was fully cured I used my Aztec airbrush to apply the Metal Colour straight from the bottle. The exception for this was the canopy which I decided to paint later and I will discuss further shortly.

I had already cemented the engine to the chassis and decided to apply minor weathering to this in the form of a black panel line wash and some subtle pigment effects. If one was so inclined you could go to town super detailing the engine, which is a little on the basic side but as this was going to be barely visible once complete I could see little point.

The second stage of the instructions show the construction of the lower body which comprises of three panels to both sides. Test fitting of these three parts is essential as trying to get them to fit together is like working on a three dimensional jigsaw.

I would recommend that no glue is applied until all three parts are in position and then a liquid cement is run between them using capillary action. Not for the last time I found myself wishing for an extra pair of hands. The centre panel is matt black which was drybrushed with Games Workshop Boltgun Metal (or whatever they call it these days) to highlight the detail and two small dots of Vallejo Red to match my reference images.

The matt black wheels were similarly drybrushed before inserting into the rubber tyres. It should be noted that the tyres have a

prominent seam-line running down the centre of them which needs sanding away, but otherwise nicely replicate the tread seen on the filming model. To ease the process of inserting the wheels into the tyres I used a hairdryer to heat and soften the rubber.

ANYTHING INSIDE?

The build continued as per the instructions by fitting the brake discs and wheels to the lower body followed by the front and rear fenders which fitted together nicely without the need for filler. I then turned my attention to the interior, but a few words before I proceed. Looking at reference photographs of the filming vehicle the canopy hinges upwards separately on both sides of the body to gain access to the inside.

The model has no option to recreate this straight from the box and truth be told, unless you are going to super detail the basic interior there is very little point.

The interior is a much simplified version of the real thing and as very little of this would be visible through the windscreen (more on this later) I kept to a very simplistic paint scheme. I must admit to being a pragmatic modeller and decline to construct and paint items of a model that will never be seen. I know some modellers take comfort in 'knowing it’s there' but I see it as a pointless waste of time and any spare parts can usefully be retired to the spares box. I would note that the instructions (and part fit) show the steering wheel

I decided to use Deluxe’s clear setting canopy glue to fix the windscreen to the canopy but after applying the glue I discovered that both parts had a notional different curvature which caused the windscreen to spring out before the glue would set. In one of those 'oh bother' moments I discovered that the glue had smeared the windscreen and despite my best efforts I couldn’t get it properly clean; never mind I had a plan. I used clear setting, non-fogging superglue to fix the windscreen in place and I thought I would use more of the clear PVA to complete the installation: it really wasn’t my day as this went everywhere and I spent a good while trying to clean this up.

To hide the mess I had made of the windscreen I decided to spray it with Tamiya Clear Smoke: a not unprecedented move as most previous Batmobiles (it’s not obvious on this one) have tinted glazing. Several coats

of the smoke were applied to the inside and out to get an even finish and it was set aside for a couple of days to cure – or so I thought: more on that later.

I then glued the machine gun and front wing assembly to the upper body panel, which was them glued to the completed section of car. Jumping past the construction of the 'wings' I then glued the interior to the body which required a good deal of trial and error as the images on the instructions just showed the interior being lowered into place: the part will not fit like this but with some experimentation and, shock, horror, actually reading the text of the instructions the part was installed by sliding in from the rear before pushing down.

I then glued the canopy in place. The canopy was unpainted at this stage as I wanted to paint it and the windscreen as one.

V To do this I masked the

windows by applying Tamiya masking tape which was burnished into place around the edges using a cocktail stick before removing the excess with a sharp scalpel blade. The canopy was then primed and painted as per the rest of the body.

Going back a stage in the instructions I set about the construction of the wings and support structure.

Trying to fix the rear wings to the support structure is a nightmare as there are five points of connection with very limited space to manipulate the parts, even if you did have an extra pair of hands. After a few muttered curses the wings were in place and it was time to complete the model.

BACK TO THE BATMOBILE, ROBIN!

The vehicle was given a couple of coats of Games Workshop Purity Seal to tone down the metallic finish and make it more representative of the screen machine. The headlights were hand painted with Games Workshop Mithril Silver and gloss varnished and a black panel line wash was applied. The actual vehicle has a brushed metal appearance which I tried to replicate by using an extremely drybrush loaded with Games Workshop Chainmail to most body parts brushing continuously in the same direction to create the appearance of wear. The final weathering was some dust and dirt to

the wheels and lower body parts created using pigments dissolved in enamel thinner.

Once dry these were given a good scrubbing with a very old brush to give a more realistic finish.

It was time to remove the masking tape from the windscreen and the model would be finished. Except it wasn’t. For some reason the Clear Smoke paint had not fully cured when I applied the masking tape and the windscreen was left with a frosted glass appearance.

Not good. I cleaned up the windscreen as best I could and it was apparent that none of the interior was going to be visible and it would need several coats of Johnson’s Klear to give the windscreen an acceptable appearance.

FINAL THOUGHTS?

The vehicle was placed on the base and finally finished.

Despite a few difficulties along the way this has been an interesting built and my hat’s off to Moebius for replicating such an unusually shaped vehicle so well. ●

un? In modelling? Surely the hobby is a serious business about accurate wing-shapes, exact colourchart references and markings of real subjects, not made-up machines? Well, it is about all of the above (and more) of course, but there is also room for some truly fun model building that simply celebrates the funnier things, in scale model form. Way back in 1971, Revell released this kit and my dad just had to have it. At five years old I was blown away by it, and I remember watching him build it and us both laughing at the crazy instruction notes; “Ah zo... At der beginning ve get started. So be sticken der fuselage togedder yet”. Not particularly PC but very funny, particularly when read aloud by my dad who was great with accents...

So when this kit was recently re-issued by Revell USA I was delighted to see it. MIM-104B PATRIOT SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSILE (SAM) SYSTEM (PAC-1) with M983 HEMTT Black Label is launching its most ambitious project yet in 1/35 scale and, appropriately, it’s a model of a launcher! Item No.3558 depicts a plastic model of the MIM-104B Patriot surface-to-air missile (SAM) system complete with Launching Station mounted on an M860 semi-trailer and its associated M983 HEMTT tractor truck. The Patriot Advanced Capability-1 (PAC-1) was a SAM system with an anti-ballistic missile capacity. The MIM-104B anti-standoff jammer (ASOJ) missile allowed it to seek out electronic countermeasure emitters, and so it was an improvement over its predecessor. The trailer-mounted M901 Launching Station is a self-contained unit from which four MIM-104B missiles in canisters can be fired. The M901 includes all necessary items such as the 15kW Launcher Generator Set, and the Launcher Mechanics Assembly that elevates and rotates the canisters. The M860 semi-trailer is towed by the M983 tractor of the HEMTT (Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck) family, this being an 8x8 truck fitted with a fifth wheel.

The Patriot, which was previously untested in combat, rose to fame during the Gulf War of 1990-91 when its ballistic missile defence function was exercised against Iraqi weapons more than 40 times.

This 1/35 scale Black Label model kit is fantastic in both its ambition and its execution, with the completed model impressive in its size and detail. Dragon’s engineers have created an extremely accurate depiction of this massive combination of truck, trailer and missile launcher. Indeed, modellers can render this model in either transport configuration or in firing mode, making it ideal for a Gulf War diorama, for example. The M901 Launching Station can be posed with the missiles elevated and/or rotated for firing at the correct 38º angle, and with the trailer stabilizers extended.

Integral components such as the antenna and generator are all included too, while the vehicle tyres are made from DS for extra realism. Detail such as the tread plate pattern is particularly well done. For modellers willing to launch into something absolutely stunning, this Patriot PAC-1 combination is simply unbeatable!
