Earthwatch Learning - Example programmes

Our multi-award-winning programmes blend education, personal experience and immersive, nature-based learning to inform, motivate and drive change across all levels of your organisation.

Each programme can be tailored to your industry to ensure learning outcomes are customised to your business needs and enable you to quickly upskill your team or organisation.

7 Day Learning programme

A 7-day research and learning experience based on an environmental research project (e.g. Tiny Forests) to promote engagement, learning and action around the theme of biodiversity and your organisation’s sustainability commitments 12-14 participants per team.

Programme purpose: To inspire, educate and enable sustainability advocates

Day 1

AM: Programme introduction

After meeting the staff team and fellow participants, the introduction session will set out the purpose and expected outcome of the programme and how this relates to their role going forward.

PM: Planetary Boundaries

This session will give participants a broad understanding of the critical environmental processes that help maintain the stability of our planet.

Day 2

AM: Our Planet Under Pressure

This session provides a detailed understanding of biodiversity and climate themes as they relate to participants’ organisation.

PM:

Tiny Forest Research

In the afternoon participants get first hand experience of Tiny Forest research and techniques. During a visit to a local Tiny Forest near a local visitor attraction, participants will learn about and discuss naturebased solutions for business

Day 3

AM: Ecosystems in business

After this session participants will understand the risk factors of biodiversity to their organisation and they will learn about tools and frameworks to help mitigate risks to their business.

The case for nature connection

Participants will explore and experience how nature connection is an important tool for more sustainable decision making. This will include a visit to nature sites with an interesting local story.

PM: En-roads activity

With En-roads participants can explore the impacts of business and policy decisions on the climate and society using a climate simulator

Tiny Forest visit

In the afternoon participants go on a research visit to a Tiny Forest in a local mining community.

Day 4

AM: Stakeholder voices

After this session participants will understand the pressures their organisation faces from the perspectives and demands of various stakeholders, e.g. investors, customers, NGOs or colleagues / employees.

PM: Site visit

The afternoon includes a site visit to a local industry of relevance where participants can explore a sustainability topic related to their business, for example visiting an energy recovery facility or a tidal energy scheme and discussing energy transition and trade-offs with nature.

Day 5

AM: Business sustainability strategy

This session provides participants with a detailed understanding of their organisation’s sustainability strategy, and an opportunity to discuss the strategy with a representative from their organisation to explore the challenges and opportunities for employees.

PM: Tiny Forest visit

Participants participate in citizen science research at a local Tiny Forest based in a deprived urban community

Day 6

PM: My vision

This reflective session provides an opportunity for participants to uncover their deepest values and priorities around their organisation’s sustainability ambitions.

AM: Goals and action planning

In this session participants will work both in groups and individually to think about where they can best support their organisation’s sustainability goals and plan what they will do when they return to their jobs.

Day 7

Research wrap-up & programme close

In this last session the research scientist will present what has been achieved during the week and what participants’ citizen science efforts will help to support.
