Forged in Fire T

his October I got the chance to attend Manufacturing Day, an excellent industry event that machine tool major Bharat Fritz Werner organizes every year. Mr. Vipin Sondhi, the Managing Director & CEO of Ashok Leyland Limited, delivered a highly insightful keynote address. Following the address, I asked Mr. Sondhi his estimation of how much the adoption of industry 4.0 technologies increased in India during the months of the crisis. He said that it should have gone up, at least, by 5x. His estimation was spot-on. Industry reports indicate that the crisis spurred the adoption of digitization – that lays the foundation for industry 4.0 – of key processes across industries, including manufacturing. A recent McKinsey survey conducted across industries and regions reported that digital adoption has taken “a quantum leap at both the organizational and industry levels” globally. The biggest acceleration has been seen in the number of digital or digitally enhanced products that companies have begun to create and offer during the pandemic. The rate of creation of such products shows a seven-year increase! In other words, the rate at which companies are making and offering such products this year is seven-times more than last year’s average rate of adoption. Further, the respondents said that investments in digital technologies played a key role in helping them navigate the crisis. As an Indian manufacturer, if you feel that we, as an industry, are behind the curve, let me share with you something that is a rarity in these times: some good news. By recent accounts, Indian industries have been at the forefront of the digital adoption movement. This year's Digital Transformation Index (DT Index) — an annual survey done by Dell Technologies to track the status of digital transformation across the globe — ranked India, Brazil, and Mexico as the best performing countries. Even more, this year India emerged as the strongest performer on the 'digital transformation acceleration' benchmark with a score of 95 against a global score of 80 percent (China's score is 93). The survey covered 13 industries, including automotive and manufacturing. At Dynamic Manufacturing India, our interactions with manufacturers during the last ten months about digitization and industry 4.0 confirm this trend. For example, we learned that manufacturers in the capital goods and machine tools industry increased the implementation of industrial IoT technologies such as cloud-connected sensors and streaming analytics to integrate machines and systems and improve performances both on the shopfloor and in their supply chain. There is no doubt that this crisis has transformed our industry. Digital adoption is one of the many areas where manufacturers stepped up and showed a steely resolve to embrace change and encounter the numerous challenges that this crisis engendered. Our manufacturing sector has been, by all accounts, a hero, an indefatigable saviour. Even when facing the spectre of disease and financial losses every time they went to work, manufacturers doubled down on producing critical and essential products, safety equipment and medicines. Textile manufacturers dedicated their production lines to making masks and PPE kits, FMCG producers and suppliers ramped up the production of food and hygiene products, capital goods manufacturers specialized in making ventilator parts, and drug manufacturers continue to focus their resources into minimizing the suffering of the afflicted till the world is safely out of this crisis. The crisis is not yet over, but what has been proved beyond all doubt is that our manufacturers have braved the worst that this crisis had to offer and have emerged bolder and stronger from the experience. ere we are, with the year’s ‘annual trends’ issue of Dynamic Manufacturing India in your hands. This issue we are talking about trends in manufacturing that emerged this year. There were many distinct trends seen this year, some of these were technological, like Machine Learning, and ERP in the cloud, some pertained to fast-emerging markets like Space, Medical Equipment, and Wearables, and some trends were inherently socio-economic and political, like the reshaping of supply chains, and the rise of new manufacturing hubs. The five trends that we picked out of these were those that we felt had enough inertia in them to have a long term impact on manufacturing and your business. The previous issue, which was our fourth anniversary issue, was one of the most talked about issues of Dynamic Manufacturing India. It covered aspects and strategies of managing and overcoming the crisis. The articles contained insights gleaned from a podcast series done by Meshmix Media at the beginning of the crisis. inally, the dates are locked for our Annual Event Industry Samurai Awards and Summit 2020: on the 11th and 12th of December, we will be hosting Industry Samurai Awards. During the past many months, we have been building up this initiative one step at a time, thanks to the concerted efforts of our team members.

I liken this process to that of Additive Manufacturing, where one shapes an object from the ground up. We started to work on creating the Industry Samurai experience in March 2020, right after the lockdown began. The term ‘Samurai’ in the title connotes the strength and fortitude of the spirit that our industry stakeholders have shown throughout the crisis. The entire journey that began with a series of webinars, will see its first major milestone this week as industry leaders will congregate virtually to speak on highly relevant topics and felicitate their peers who have done exemplary work during this year. This journey is a perfect example of what Meshmix Media as a company stands for. We are committed to bringing to our readers countless more such experiences in the years to follow. Truth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold,’ wrote Leo Tolstoy. To a tool maker, this must sound a lot like machining, and rightly so. The same rule should apply to doing a trend analysis report such as this one. Therefore, we have gleaned the following five trends through the process of chipping away all the detectable media hype and bias surrounding them and others, and checking closely to see if they have enough inertia in them to persist into the future. Presenting to you, our list of emerging trends in the manufacturing industry: 1. Work from Wherever Feasible There is no doubt that Covid-19 has dramatically altered the workplace. A Global Workplace Analytics survey done across sectors, including manufacturing, in March-April this year found out that 88 percent of office workers worked from home on a regular basis during the pandemic. As importantly, 76 percent of global employees wanted to continue working from home even after Covid-19 (see figure: Work from home during the pandemic).

However, manufacturing, like healthcare and retail, is among the sectors where remote working is the hardest to implement, given the fact that not all factory operations can be run remotely. Therefore, the perceptible trend in manufacturing is to adopt a hybrid work model i.e. make remote working possible wherever feasible and reasonable. Some of the world’s largest manufacturers have shown the way by adopting this policy both for this pandemic and beyond. Siemens, for example, established mobile working as a core component of its ‘new normal’ way of working. Effective July this year, the new model has been made applicable to more than 140,000 of the company’s employees at over 125 locations in 43 countries. That makes about half of its total employee strength. Other such manufacturing leaders include Hitachi and Honeywell. According to Business Insider, Hitachi has committed to having 70 percent of its employees work from home permanently. Clearly, most jobs that qualify for remote working at present are white-collar jobs, benefitting the accounting, sales, marketing, human-resources and legal professionals. For

shop floor workers, the trend has been to allow them to adopt a hybrid version: come to work some days of the week, and remotely access certain machines and equipment on the others. As more and more plant data get digitized and the availability of cloud-based enterprise systems like ERP, QMS and PLM gets better for the SMEs, the idea of a hybrid work model in the factory is likely to catch on further. Further, ideas like ‘lights out’ machining – unstaffed working hours, mostly during the night (that is why the prefix ‘lights out’) when the machines can be run unattended – will gain momentum. The year 2020 marked a paradigm shift in approach of industrial leaders to managing plant operations. We must be prepared to see an accelerated transition toward a work culture that is both more productive and less physically demanding. 2. The Miracle of Light Takuo Aoyagi, a Japanese engineer, passed away this year at the age of 84. This was also the year when Mr. Aoyagi’s invention, the Pulse Oximeter, became a vital tool in the fight against the novel coronavirus. Patented in the 70s, this device, that uses red and infrared wavelengths of light to measure blood oxygen levels, replaced a cumbersome invasive process that required blood sampling. Another example of the use of photonics in the war against the virus is the use of UV-C disinfection systems being used in public

places like London’s tube network and retail stores in Germany and the US for the purpose. Speaking of which, it was the UV disinfection systems that has made the concept of drinking germfree water a trendy thing at every Indian middleclass home. This are just two recent examples of how photonics – the science of light – is transforming our world (Figure: Application space for ultrawideband next generation photonics and PIC). The pre-millennial generation, that is, those born in the 80s and before would know the dramatic improvement that LED lights that ushered in, over incandescent bulbs and CFLs, with their positive impact on the environment, cost of electricity, and our city nightscapes. Likewise, optical technology including solidstate Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) and LWIR and 3D cameras are making autonomous driving possible. McKinsey predicts that up to 15 percent of new cars sold in 2030 could be fully autonomous. French strategy consulting firm Yole Développement predicts that cameras designed for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) is emerging as a fast-growing category, that will bring in more than half of the revenue for the imaging technology in the automotive sector by 2021. A lot of has been written about the growth of laser-cutting industry in India, and how it helped position India as the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing centre. The other big

success story for photonics and laser, particularly in India, has been its use in medical imaging, surgery, and the manufacture of medical equipment like stents. Similarly, in telecommunications, process of transmitting data by the passage of light through thin, transparent fibres, called fiber optics has made dramatic improvements in media and education. Light is going to further improve telecommunication in the era of 5G with the wider use of Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) technology, which enables transmission of data via LEDs. The year 2020 strengthened our belief in photonics – the science of light that helped us fight the disease with devices like the Pulse Oximeter and carry on working from safer confines through the technology of fiber optics. Presently, the global optics and photonics industry is reeling from a combined impact of Covid, the US-China-trade war and a fluctuating economy in many parts of the world. Sector leaders like Honeywell International, Alcatel-Lucent and Hamamatsu Photonics have reported losses for the first three quarters of this year. Hamamatsu, the Japanese photonics systems company reported an annual drop in sales of 3.9 percent and in profits by 14.4 percent. As things hopefully normalize in 2021, the optics and photonics industry is going to not only regain its momentum, but its going to expand faster, keeping in view the important role it played, helping people soldier on during the crisis. India, which already has benefitted from the successes of photonics in hygiene, health care

and telecommunication is in a good position to take this technology to the next level. 3. Towards Self-Sufficiency It is well evident that the Sino-American trade war and the pandemic prompted major economies and multinational corporations to reduce their dependence on China. Tariffs imposed by USA’s President Trump on $360 billion worth of Chinese goods forced some of the world’s most valuable companies such as Samsung, Apple, Nintendo and Nike to take their manufacturing in full or part to other countries such as Vietnam and Mexico. And more companies are likely to follow suit. A June 2020 Gartner survey revealed that about 33 percent of global supply chain organizations moved their business out of China or plan to do it in the next three years. The USA’s trade deficit in goods with China fell $73.9 billion to $345.6 billion in 2019. This was first such trade deficit fall in the last six years. On their part, U.S. lawmakers are considering putting in billions of dollars of investments into further developing America’s semiconductor industry over the next five to 10 years through the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) for America Act. For Indian manufacturers, there are two important points about this trend to consider: One, is India’s manufacturing industry benefitting from this shift in global supply chains, and two, what can be done to leverage this trend? The answer to the first question is that, yes,

India has benefitted from trade diversion, albeit not so significantly. An UNCTAD research paper released in November last year showed (see figure: Trade Diversion) that Taiwan benefitted the most from the trade diversion – with a $4.2 billion boost in exports to the US. The other big beneficiaries were Mexico, the European Union and Vietnam. In comparison, India benefitted to a lesser extent, gaining $755 million worth of exports to the US during the period, mostly in the sectors of chemicals ($243 million) and electrical machinery ($83 million). Another study, a Nomura report, pointed out that during April-August 2019, out of 56 firms shifting production away from China, 26 went to Vietnam, 11 to Taiwan, 8 to Thailand and only three companies came to India. The answer to the second point – how India can leverage this trend – is far more, encouraging. A recent measure undertaken by the government of India could prove to be the pivot that India’s manufacturers were looking for. On April 01, 2020, the government introduced a productionlinked incentive scheme (PLI) which offers a production-linked incentive to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments in mobile phone manufacturing and specified electronic components, including Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) units. The scheme extended an incentive of 4-6 percent on incremental sales (with FY 19-20 as the base year) of electronics goods manufactured in India to eligible companies for a period of five years subsequent to the base year (see figure: Government’s PLI Scheme). The PLI Scheme received an encouraging response. A total of 22 international and local companies, including assembly partners of Apple and Samsung, applied for the scheme, which will

bring an additional 10 percent of global handset production to India in the next five years, as per a Credit Suisse estimate. Enthused by the response, on 11 November the government approved the scheme for ten more sectors, including automotive, pharma, white goods, textiles, food products and speciality steel, that increased the total outlay to Rs 2 lakh crore for a period of five years. Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra has called the PLI scheme a gamechanger and industry experts largely agree. The government move to incentivise manufacturing has come at the right time to harness the changing dynamics of the global trade. 4. Go D2C (Direct-to-Consumer) FMCG brands such as Hindustan Lever, Nestle, ITC and Britannia Industries reported that their share of online retail to total sales volume nearly doubled this year from what it was pre-Covid. Similarly, Flipkart, Amazon and Reliance Digital reported a record surge in sales of WFH-supporting products such as smartphones, white goods, consumer electronics, and kitchen appliances such as dishwashers and robotic vacuums. By all accounts, the pandemic has triggered a major shift in consumer behaviour towards online shopping. An UNCTAD survey titled “Covid-19 and E-commerce” of about 3,700 consumers in nine emerging and developed economies including Brazil, China, South Africa, Switzerland and Turkey revealed that the biggest gainers are ICT/ electronics, pharmaceuticals, education, household products and personal care categories (see figure: Covid-19 and E-commerce). The shift to digital evident across countries and product categories signifies an important strategy imperative for manufacturers: formulate and

implement a direct-to-consumer strategy, and this applies to manufacturers of both capital goods and finished goods. The world’s top consumer goods brands have a well-honed D2C strategy that has started to pay rich dividends. Nike, for example, garners more than $9 billion in sales global through the D2C channels. Samsung, LG have ramped up their D2C presence in India, and large Indian OEMs like Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra and Mahindra have strongly integrated their D2C presence into their omnichannel strategy. This is a opportune time for makers and suppliers of components, machine tools, coolants and other products along the value chain to develop a D2C strategy. An effective D2C action plan has to have the following key elements: a. Build an engagement platform: Your D2C website needs to make it easy and exciting for your customers to connect with you. It needs to be much more than a product catalogue: think of it as a way of sharing your brand experience with the consumers. It also serves as platform for delivering a more customized experience. A Deloitte survey says that well-executed personalization can deliver five to ten times the return on investment on marketing spend and lift sales by ten percent or more. b. Build a community: D2C offers a unique advantage over traditional sales channels. It offers manufacturers the opportunity to build one-to-one relationships with consumers with regular communication and delivery of relevant content. When this is offered at the right time to the right consumer, they are likely to respond more positively and want a repeat experience. Irrelevant content, or frequent, unsolicited communication, on the other hand, is certain to have the opposite effect.

c. Sharpen your supply-chain capability: Having a D2C presence means that the customer will consider your fulfilment capabilities like delivery speed, packaging and tracking as a part of your offering. Partner with a wellreviewed logistics service provider to offer a complete D2C experience to your customer. 5. Diversify Your Product Line This year, any factory not older than a hundred years, anywhere in the world, faced lockdown restrictions necessitated by a pandemic for the first time ever in a lifetime. Most had to shut down and restart with limited capacity, making sure that all the safety protocols were followed, and service a wildly fluctuating demand. This caused widespread distress in the world of manufacturing. Factories in India, the US and Europe have been hit by one wave after another of the pandemic. Amid all this disruption, some large manufacturers chose to brave it by responding with product line diversification. Indian and international garment manufacturers such as Primark, Delta Apparel, Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Shiva Tex Fab, Shahi Exports started making masks and PPE kits. The same of was true for the manufacturing of ventilators. Usually the process of designing, manufacturing, and testing ventilators takes years. This year, manufacturers and suppliers from diverse sectors responded to the crisis and made available ventilators in record time. short period of three months. According to the U.K.’s Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock, “The Ventilator Challenge has played a crucial role in ensuring everyone who has needed a ventilator during this pandemic has had access to one.” In the U.S., the government’s invocation of the Federal Defence Production act resulted in a surplus production of ventilators, as manufacturers such as GM, Ford, General Electric and Philips joined hands to deliver more than 90,000 ventilators between March to May this year. Similarly, Germany had Bosch Group and Mercedes-Benz using their innovation centres and production lines to make testing kits, face shields and ventilators. Companies not only diversified their production line, but they also used alternate supply lines in the wake of disruption of China-linked supply chains. USA-based PCB (printed circuit board) manufacturers preferred to have PCBs installed in Mexico rather than China. All of this means that those Indian manufacturers who have not done it yet, should look at a diversification strategy for their production lines, which covers diversification of both the plant machinery as well as supply clusters.

Machine tool suppliers in India, for example, have been faced with this tumult over the last few year, as the automotive industry, which provides about 85 percent of their business has been facing headwinds due to regulatory changes and demand uncertainties. Even more, a large part of the automotive clientele comprises only a handful of large companies. All of which means that component manufacturers, machine tool makers and their suppliers continue to be at the mercy of global economic uncertainties and supply chain disruptions such as the one underway. Therefore, this is a good time for manufacturers to see the writing on the wall and act on it: diversify into more market niches and sectors. For example, a metal finishing company can branch out into medical equipment, electronics, and food processing machinery. Look for markets that do well when your primary market faces a downturn. When the commercial vehicles market is down, the aftersales market picks up, because customers continue with their vehicles for a longer term. But do remember to chart out a well-honed strategy. Diversification is a long-term game.

n 2008, the growth path for the world took a huge U-SHAPE. That was the time when we realised the still to explore market and opportunities and with the same confidence when we surpassed our initial meeting with TATA Motors, the ideation of PROTO-D occurred with an absolute resemblance of what we intended. 2 young technocrats, Pradeep Lokhande & Deepak Shinde got the vision of kicking off with production of prototype and tools manufacturing. As they went successfully and passionately towards the growth which began with just ideation, they found their third gem, Sumeet Bagrecha, sharing the same vision which they had a while ago during the primordial stage. The enthusiasm and vision successfully opened the doors towards expanding at 4 Locations across INDIA.

What challenges did you face before getting that good machine you always wanted? As a prototype development company, we were hugely dependent on the best output which would bring our visualization to reality, and as you know, that costs a huge amount of investment which was the risk involved for us during our kick-off days. These initial days made us learn about the good machine which we always dreamt of, because we always thought of saving the gestation time and capital investments of our clients. How did the solutions fall in place for your challenges? To begin with, we purchased the used machine of TRUMPF, when the process of prototype development allied to the machine started, we

nourished its benefits. This again runned along us the First chapter of our kick-off days and made us make points of all the past actions. This cleared around 60% of our ideas about the good machine we always admired. The first time we got satisfied was with the brand new TRUMPF Machines, this day was remarkable for us, it immediately showed the technology, advancement and the faster production times. Why do you mostly have every kind of manufacturing process machine in-house? It's almost been 14 years since the first chapter we unfolded, in this one and a half decade we have seen the upcoming demands and the shift in customer thought process. So, our belief received enormous strength as we thought about becoming a partner to customers and developing the components from scratch. This made us procure the machines of almost every kind of manufacturing process as per our customers' needs and implanted the fuel in our core belief to have all types of technologies under a single roof to provide extensive customer support.

How was the faith nurtured after having a good machine? The major thing was people, we knew the brand TRUMPF, but we were having very little knowledge about the cost of purchasing, maintenance, service and the after sales support. When we saw the machine run for the first time in action with its output it really boosted our confidence. It helped us majorly boost our faith like anything, and that was the major turnaround in our thought process. We would say it all started with TRUMPF people, they explained us all the minute details of it and which was satisfactory for us to move ahead, and then Technology came into picture where we got all our answers to previously raised questions from our previous procurements. What is the workforce size and how do you cope with the customer demands? We have a large team with 350+ Employees across all the units pan INDIA, with 17 laser cutting machines which are perfect fit as per the latest technology for sufficing our customer needs. About TRUMPF experience Previously we were using 5-axis CO2 Laser machine that was advanced machine of its own kind to cater market demands. We received a new project from a well renowned OEM from aviation industry and when we saw the consistent flow

of orders, we decided to enter into production, rather than only doing prototyping as we saw a huge business opportunity here. As you know, the aviation industry requires stringent quality manufacturing techniques. That time when we looked upon the market for exact requirement, the market was ready with few options, but the real question was how to make the production profitable with operating costs, running costs and maintenance costs compared to CO2 machine? Our partner TRUMPF came to help us one more time with more advanced machinery from their arsenal that was TruLaser Cell 7040 with new Solid-state (TruDisk) Laser source, the latest technology available within the industry that has no match for.

To get the full exposure of technology we have visited multiple exhibitions across the globe. This crafted our new target we would like to achieve as the benchmark and that was rapid prototyping. As the market is changing and customers are also shifting Our one and a half decade of experience with procuring machines and producing quality output for our customers has made us follow our vision passionately by coping up with the latest trends in manufacturing. When we combine it altogether, we have our own expertise and approach towards entering a new space of any kind of manufacturing. Towards a sustainable future TATA Power lays foundation of the 400 MW (AC) Solar Power Project at the 5000 MW Solar Park location in Dholera Special Investment Region, Gujarat

T

he Solar Power Project development is a huge shot in the arm for the DSIR project which is one of India’s first and largest Greenfield Smart city that aims to provide superlative infrastructure and sustainable environment through the application of ‘smart’ solutions. Dholera is all set to develop one of the world’s largest single-location Ultra Mega Solar Power Park which the government approved recently. Close to 11,000 hectares of land parcels are dedicated to the Park with estimated capacity of 5000 MW renewable energy generation. Of this, currently Phase 1 of 1000 MW is being developed in which a 700 MW bid was recently awarded to five companies in August 2020 namely Vena Energy Renewables, Tata Power, ReNew Power, SJVN Limited, and TEQ Green Power while 300 MW from the bid issued in the year 2019 was awarded to Tata Power.

Today, Tata Power, India’s major integrated power company is to develop 400MW of solar project for Solar Park at Dholera, Gujarat. The recommencement of site work was commemorated with tree plantation today for 300MW project in the presence of Dr. Parul Mansata, Deputy Collector, Dholera Special Investment Regional Development Authority, Mr. Ashish Khanna, President – Renewables, Tata Power and local community leaders. Further to the existing 300MW project, a LOA of 100MW was received from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) to develop the project in Dholera Solar Park of Gujarat. The energy will be supplied to GUVNL. “The Ultra Mega Solar Power Park in Dholera is a state-of-the-art project that will provide clean, renewable energy. Solar power is the biggest natural resource gifted to humans and DSIR is poised to use this gift towards the betterment and sustainable human life. I am happy to share that M/s. Tata Power laid the foundation stone of its 400 MW solar park establishment in DSIR and further, we are looking forward to devise an innovative approach for attracting investors to the region that will thrive on renewable energy” said Dr. Parul Mansata. The National Highway Authority of India recently initiated development work of the Ahmedabad-Dholera four-lane expressway project. The work order of Rs 3,500 crore for the stretch of road connecting Ahmedabad to Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) has been finalised and work is expected to begin shortly.

This road will be a new straight alignment. The Ahmedabad-Dholera expressway will have more advanced features than the AhmedabadVadodara expressway and is expected to reduce the commute between Ahmedabad and Dholera to less than an hour. While, Dholera Industrial City Development Limited is also in process of implementing the Bhimnath-Dholera Rail network, so as to ease the movements of goods coming in Dholera or going out to either ports or supplying across the nation. Features like large land parcels, Plug-N-Play utilities, CETP, STP, WTP, etc. also facilitate companies who intend to setup some of the biggest industries in India and this makes Dholera, the right place for establishment. Characteristics like Lowest Power Tariff, 5000 MW Solar Park, ICT enabled networking etc. will make industries across sectors, more competitive and help them focus on their business without worrying about the utility & services, allowing them to reduce business lifecycle cost and get better returns on investment well in advance according to their forecast.

These developments and a holistic support infrastructure being developed in the region are a huge shot in the arm for the DSIR project, which is one of India’s first and largest Greenfield Industrial Smart city that aims to provide superlative infrastructure and sustainable environment through the application of such ‘smart’ solutions. While the national policies for industries are always favourable to existing as well as new investors. Gujarat has more than 40 active ports across its 1600 Km coast line and it helps the state handle more than 40% of the cargo movement for the nation. The Government of Gujarat also took a step further and published the new Industrial Policy 2020. With this policy, the state has ensured to share benefits in terms of Fixed Capital Incentive (FCI) put by the company and favours incentives pertaining to projects that need relocation incentives if they intend to setup in Gujarat. Gujarat is probably the only state that boasts sector / industry specific policies and ensures that industries get their incentives on time.

Reorientation in the chipper product range under the leadership of LIG Ferdinand Doppstadt gives insight into the plans and strategic targets of the Langenberger Innovation Group (LIG) for the chipper product range that the chippers currently on the market via the Doppstadt brand continue to be reliably supported by us. With the transition of the chippers into the responsibility of the LIG, you are sharpening the structures of the Group. What was the reason for this decision? The bioenergy/biomass business area and thus the issue of chippers and forestry are a matter close to my heart and therefore of great personal interest. After all, this is exactly what we want to achieve in the area of chippers through the transition into the responsibility of the LIG. Forestry will continue to be an important field of activity for us in the future, because all services will continue as usual and the supply of spare parts is of course also guaranteed. The entire Doppstadt team is pleased that the DH series will continue to accompany us in this form for a longer period of time - even if Doppstadt no longer produces new chippers. What is the LIG's strategy for the forestry industry? With our solutions we offer innovative products to all those who want to grow in the field of sustainable energies. Therefore, against the background of global issues such as climate change and scarcity of resources, the field of bioenergy/biomass, especially renewable resources, is of great importance to us. This is where the chippers come into play: We focus on the development of industrial and off-road chippers for the forestry industry, gardening, landscaping, and road maintenance - both in the form of mobile and stationary solutions. Which specific measures are behind this goal? We are currently examining several options for our repositioning in this segment and are also in dialog with other companies. This can take the form of co-operations, takeovers, investments, or the creation of private labels - it is still completely open. That is why it's too early at this stage to communicate specific measures. One thing is certain: In the future, we will operate in the chipper sector with technologically advanced products that are fully tailored to the needs of the industry. ompact design, high energy efficiency, simple installation and fast commissioning – these are the convincing arguments that speak for the Innopro BoxFlash from KHS. The engineering company first presented its flash pasteurizer machine, specifically developed to meet the demands of small and medium-sized breweries, four years ago. The technology, proven in practice many times since, is now available for several new areas of application: where it was initially only used in keg racking, it is now compatible with the glass, can and PET container segments. Its compact design on a frame means that users benefit from lower logistics costs and faster installation.

The Innopro BoxFlash pasteurizing machine

As with all process engineering systems from KHS the Dortmund turnkey supplier also uses as many identical parts as possible on the Innopro BoxFlash. Components taken from other series machines include, for instance, the buffer tank and frame from the Innopro Paramix program, KHS’ pioneering three-component blending system. Unlike in the standard design the buffer tank here has been placed horizontally inside the frame. “To this end, we cut the size of the tank down by 25% to a still generous 1,500 liters,” explains Gerold Tandler, process technology product manager at KHS. This has the advantage that the system no longer has to be dismantled for shipping, supplied in parts and re-piped and rewired on site, meaning that after acceptance at the production site it is simply shipped as a complete unit. This reduces logistics costs by at least two thirds and considerably shortens the time needed for installation and commissioning on site. Simple installation, optimum pasteurization Besides attaching the machine feet and mounting the overpressure valve to secure the buffer tank, all that remains to be done on site is to connect up the relevant lines and the Innopro BoxFlash can go into action. Manufacturing capacity doubled British luxury watch manufacturer Bremont made the most of Sandvik Coromant and DMG MORI’s strategic partnership as it introduced a turnkey manufacturing cell to double capacity at its factory.

L

uxury watchmaker Bremont Watch Company is a true British manufacturing success story. Founded by brothers Nick and Giles English in 2002, the company specializes in the manufacture of certified chronometers for the aviation sector. These watches are assembled, as well as shock and quality tested, at the manufacturer’s dedicated headquarters in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, UK. Production of the main components, such as stainless steel backs and casings, takes place just a few minutes' drive away. High demand and the launch of six new watch designs meant that Bremont’s production capacity had to be increased. To achieve this, the company purchased an NTX 1000, a state-of-the-art 5-axis machining center from DMG MORI, which is equipped with tool packages from Sandvik Coromant. The project was six months in the making, explains Mathew Bates, a machine tool investment specialist from Sandvik Coromant’s UK Machine Tool Solutions team. “From the beginning, the objective was to deliver a ‘right first time’ solution,” explains Bates. “We wanted Bremont to be able to use the new system straight away.” Close collaboration with application technicians from DMG MORI was needed, with regard to the selection of suitable tools. “We knew that we had to produce six new watches,” says Bates. “As soon as the drawings were ready we met with specialists from DMG MORI to compile a list of standard tools and to determine which special tools would be needed.” Integrated automation for 24/7 operation The DMG MORI NTX 1000 is equipped with a magazine for 38 Coromant Capto® tools, with the option of expanding the capacity up to 76 tools. The turn and mill machine is suitable for turning and high-speed milling in 5 axes, simultaneously. Thanks to the bar loader, the machine produces the different stainless steel components around the clock without any operator intervention. Everything from a single source — tools, machine, automation and programming Even before the installation of the machine, Frederick Shortt, application technician at DMG MORI, and his development team created and simulated the numerical control (NC) programs with the Vericut computer-aided manufacture (CAM) system. “Together with Sandvik Coromant we optimized all programs in such a way that as few tools as possible are needed,” says Shortt. In other words, Bremont only

bought what they really needed. As this all took place before the installation, so Bremont was able to start producing from day one. “This joint optimization meant that any teething problems were reduced to a minimum and the investment quickly paid off for Bremont,” explains James Rhys-Davies, Strategic Relations Director, Northern Europe at Sandvik Coromant. “The call for such turnkey solutions will increase steadily. Although the preliminary costs are sometimes a little higher, the benefits of a fast return on investment (ROI) and maximization of machine availability make such turnkey production cells a very attractive option, as cost per part is generally much lower.” Tolerances between 3 and 5 micrometres (µm) Exactly as planned, Bremont was able to start full production of the watch components immediately after installation of the new machine. Malcolm Kent, Production Manager at Bremont, was extremely satisfied with the results. “We were surprised at the speed and high quality to which we can now produce the individual components,” he says. “We produce very complex parts with tolerances of 3 to 5 µm, where quality and precision are of paramount importance. Is India Ready for HumanTech? Director, COO, Puresight Systems Pvt. Ltd., talks about India’s adoption of Human Tech.

hen we talk about HumanTech it consists of two words – Human and Technology. On one hand it is easy to define humans, but technology is hard. If we look at the history of humankind, it has adopted technology to make work much easy and fast. We find that in pre-historic period humans adopted fire, Wheel and stone tools, in 3000 BC writing, in 1698 steam engine, in 1823 telegraph and so on. The internet in 1969 and mobile technology in 1990, these are some significant technological adoption by humans. The acceleration really occurred 5000 years ago when writing was invented. What is the real importance of all these - it lies in the answer of technology being adopted and many being rejected. The successful technologies have really been based out of human needs and values at personal, family, societal and organizational level. They adopted the functionality to fulfill these needs and values, the combination of application of technology and human led the foundation of HumanTech. The recent pandemic situation has given a jolt to complete humankind across the globe and cross territories. Under the current scenario we are witnessing greater degrees of human beings dependent on technology designed for their day to day needs. It is the need of the hour to have contactless solutions and lesser dependency on human aid in day to day chores. These technologies must be adaptive and engaging and should consider that human needs and values vary across cultures and regions. Is India Ready for HumanTech? The answer is yes. To validate this, I will take example of consumer technology and smart appliances. Since the pandemic knocked the door of India, we have witnessed lesser dependency on human house helps and acute supplies of same. Under the situation when mostly people were under lockdown or work from home, there was a great need of solutions which will provide them the ease of doing things faster and better. The spike in the sale of robotic vacuum cleaners, dishwashers and other appliances proved that how the adoptability of HumanTech has increased and Indians have readily adopted. It was an unprecedented demand, this also shows that a large segment of people in India were aware about these technologies and products but

have not owned them: may be because they were happy with the help they had or they did not want to change their pattern of doing things. With this sudden crisis, the available technological products and solutions crossing their beachhead segment audience and have reached the early adopters in the diffusion of technology cycle. But the question now is that how these HumanTech will reach to next level of Indian consumers or early majority. What requires to be done on technology side and what on the easy to adopt side? The answer is that how the technology is leveraged to give the best solution to the human needs without asking to change the consumer behavior too much. It also means that the technology need not be defined as more features but more it terms of enhancing the consumer experience in real time. Technology will always be a catalyst and will play an important role in defining the HumanTech. A very real example of above is the iRobot products, their floor cleaning robots – Roomba and Braava. Primarily these are floor cleaning robots but to enhance the consumer experience they have gone a step ahead and with the use of their iRobot Genius technology, are giving an enhanced experience to the user. It is like asking someone to clean below the dining table after having dinner and can be programmed on the user-friendly app. These features are being provided to enhance the experience that we get on a day to day basis; in India we have habits to clean kitchen and dining table as soon as we are done. To give you same experience the technology is being used to develop the new app based on social and behavioral pattern. On your single voice command, it will clean the desired mapped area. The future holds more and HumanTech adaptation across the world and in India too. With big data, robotics, IOT and ecosystem of smart appliances and devices in place the new models will be developed further on basis the past learnings, cognitive human advancements, impact on current social arrangements and most important the degree of change required in the consumer behavior. One thing to be learned, higher the degree of change required more will be the resistance from adopting it, no matter how best the technology is. It has to aim at health and well-being, life-long employability and sustainable social and easy to experience solution.

survey released by Emerson’s Commercial & Residential Solutions business shows that consumers have dramatically altered their shopping habits in response to COVID-19, putting pressure on retailers to adapt to changing consumption patterns. More than 8 out of 10 (81%) of respondents said they’re paying close attention to whether food is kept at safe temperatures all throughout the supply chain during transportation and storage. This strong focus underscores a critical need for retailers, supermarkets and suppliers to design and invest in technology, processes and cold chain infrastructure that help ensure freshness and safety of food to meet consumers’ expectations. The Emerson survey, “Market Research Report: Cold Chain Consumer Survey during COVID-19,” has gathered responses from 604 male and female adults aged 20-60 in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. According to the survey, consumers value food safety, hygienic shopping environment and quality refrigeration equipment more than lower prices compared to the time before the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic. While 72% of respondents plan to return to more traditional fresh food venues like supermarkets, hypermarkets, wet markets and grocery stores once COVID-19 restrictions are removed, they will continue to expect the quality and freshness of food to be guaranteed. However, many consumers, including a majority of Indian and Chinese respondents, said they will continue buying fresh food from online platforms. From growers and processors to distributors and retailers, Emerson’s compressor brands and refrigeration technologies help protect perishable foods and cargo at every step along the cold chain. More consumers are cooking and eating at home COVID-19 has changed where people eat their meals. Fewer people will be dining out as frequently as before, even when the restrictions have been eased. On average, 47% of respondents said they will choose to cook and eat at home even when the cities where they live reopen. Respondents in South Africa (84%), India (77%), Philippines (72%), Australia (61%) and Indonesia (60%) are more likely to eat at home than at restaurants. As a result, more consumers will continue to buy fresh products from retailers. The change creates new opportunities for retail stores, supermarkets and online stores that plan to gain a better understanding of consumer preferences and address their concerns on food safety and quality through enhanced refrigeration technologies. More Asian consumers are now shopping for groceries online Some of the major Asian markets continue to see a growing use of e-commerce channels for buying fresh food. China leads the way at 88% of respondents now ordering fresh food from online stores or through mobile applications, followed by South Korea (63%), India (61%) and Indonesia (60%).

Even after restrictions are eased, 52% of Indian respondents and 50% of Chinese respondents said they will continue to purchase fresh food online. With mass quantities of refrigerated and frozen food in inventory, large distribution centers experience the unique challenge of preventing food loss and protecting food safety on a grand scale. Adding to this complexity, many are also supporting e-commerce food retail fulfilment. Emerson provides distribution center operators with robust refrigeration systems, powerful controls, temperature monitoring, and a holistic view of facilities, assets and shipments to help ensure quality en-route. Supermarkets and wet markets have improved safety methods and standards since the beginning of the pandemic, but there is room for improvement. A majority of survey respondents believe that supermarkets (82%) and wet markets (71%) have improved their methods and standards in ensuring food safety and quality. Consumers increasingly expect the food industry to comply with safety and health protocols, maintain clean and hygienic stores and sell quality, hygienic and fresh food. The change of consumer behaviour will create significant markets for retailers who can use advanced end-to-end cold chain systems and the latest connected technologies to supply fresh and quality food and build trust in the long run.

t a fieramilano Rho, Saturday, 17 October was the last day of 32.BI-MU, registering over 9,000 visits over the four exhibition days. Promoted by Ucimu-Sistemi Per Produrre, the Italian machine tools, robots and automation systems manufacturers' association, and organised by Efim-Ente Fiere Italiane Macchine, before its start, 32.BI-MU obtained the Compliance Certification released by ICIM, with regard to the conformity with safety protocols to combat and contain the spread of Covid-19. Barbara Colombo, president of Ucimu-Sistemi Per Produrre stated: “Particular care has been taken over the definition of all organisation details concerning safety, in order to further reassure the attending operators throughout the four days of the event. We have been proud to inform that 32.BI-MU was the very first trade fair to obtain a Compliance Certification. We think that this encouraged visitors to attend the exhibition and not only Italian operators”.

Of the total visitors, 3.5% were foreign visitors representing 27 countries, out of which Germany, Switzerland, France and Austria were the most represented countries. With over 350 exhibiting companies, 30% of which from abroad, two exhibition halls and a large and varied technological product offering, 32.BIMU also proposed a full programme of meetings focused on the main topical issues of interest for the operators of the manufacturing industry. About 50 events were held in the BI-MUpiù arena. Attended in presence by an average of 20 people, but with peaks of 90 attending guests, the speeches were followed also through the live streaming service, activated to extend the promotion and communication of the exhibiting enterprises beyond the public visiting the trade show. Over a thousand users followed the conferences remotely. On the other hand, the BI-MUpiùAdditive area, organised by Aita-Italian Association of Additive Technologies, illustrated the industrial applications of additive manufacturing, proposing some components related to the mechanics, automotive, aerospace and biomedical sectors, developed thanks to machinery that today can be defined as “machine tools of the third kind”. A great novelty of BI-MU 2020 was BI-MUpiùDigital, a demonstration area set up in Hall 11 conceived to highlight the potential of a digital factory. In addition, thanks to BI-MUonline, the event will continue after the end of the exhibition. dditive manufacturing offers almost limitless freedom in design and enables economical handling of often expensive materials. Processes such as the powder bed technology have long since established themselves as an optimal supplement to conventional process chains in machining. More and more medical companies are recognizing and utilizing the potential of this technology. The spectrum of components already ranges from dentures and bone plates to entire implants. DMG MORI accompanies and promotes this development with integrated manufacturing solutions consisting of programming software, powder bed machines of the LASERTEC SLM series and machining centers for precise finishing of medical components. The latest highlight is the production of a hip cup by means of selective laser melting on the LASERTEC 30 DUAL SLM. The three models of the LASERTEC SLM series, so far, are suitable for very different applications in the medical sector. In the powder bed of the proven LASERTEC 30 SLM 2nd Generation, for

example, 32 bone plates for wrist surgery can be set up simultaneously. Finish machining is performed extremely economically on an automated DMP 70. For more precise applications in dental technology, the LASERTEC 12 SLM is the perfect choice. At 35 µm, it has the smallest focus diameter in relation to the size of its build volume. The high surface quality considerably reduces the effort in post-processing. When productivity and build-up rate are paramount, users turn to the LASERTEC 30 DUAL SLM. The larger build volume – 300 x 300 x 300 mm compared to 125 x 125 x 200 mm for the LASERTEC 12 SLM – combined with the newly developed dual-laser optics module reduces the processing time of dental products or implants to a minimum. Efficient production of customized implants Thanks to its two powerful 600 W lasers, whose scan fields each cover the entire build volume, the LASERTEC 30 DUAL SLM allows build rates of over 90 cm³/h. DMG MORI makes use of this in the example of hip cups, for which the machine tool

manufacturer has developed a highly productive manufacturing process. “The application is so interesting because the powder bed process offers us the possibility to economically manufacture even individually adapted hip cups,” explains Dr. Uli Sutor, Key Account Medical Industries at DMG MORI, the motivation behind the project. Since medical technology products such as titanium implants are subject to the highest quality requirements, it was a top priority for DMG MORI to work out an absolutely process-reliable manufacturing process. Dr. Uli Sutor recalls the various tests: “We tested the stability of sample components in the entire build volume and their relative density – especially at higher assembly rates.” With a relative density of over 99.95 percent in the final component, the tests exceeded expectations, and the bending and stress tests were also consistently successful. Component accuracy was also guaranteed: “The dynamically adjustable focus diameter was further optimized and is now 50 µm. In addition to the high productivity, this results in a very good surface quality. The active liquid cooling ensures outstanding long-term stability in the process. All ingrowth structures can be realized. Dr. Uli Sutor is satisfied with the entire process: “We achieve the best mechanical properties and build-up rates on the market.”

Intelligent software solutions in the additive manufacturing process The production of hip cups is a holistic process from design and programming, additive manufacturing in a powder bed to final finishing on an NTX 1000 2nd Generation. It is required, for example, for the precision machining of the internal thread. DMG MORI has used OPTOMET as software for the optimization of the parameters in the powder bed process in the product range and also in this project. Dr. Uli Sutor explains: "With it, process parameters can be predicted within a few minutes as well as mechanical properties of the materials.” CELOS is also an elementary part of the process. The integrated software solution ranges from CAM programming directly at the machine using RDesigner to the control of the two machines. Monitoring tools such as camera-based monitoring of the build-up and coating quality complete the functional scope. DMG MORI offers TULIP as the third software in the bundle and for simple digitization of production processes. With this software, APPs can be created quickly, intuitively and without programming knowledge. Focus on work safety An essential part of the production concept around the LASERTEC 30 DUAL SLM is safety. The decisive features here are the closed powder circuit and the permanent filter system. The rePLUG powder modules prevent the fine metal powder from escaping into the ambient air. Furthermore, they allow a quick powder change in
