technology. We do face a tremendous price pressure in the Indian market, but our solution is to compete on technology rather than on price. In other words, our customers know that with Schunk, they are a getting a solution which is of the same price but is superior [to the competition] in terms of technology and utility.

Customers from the SME segment, which comprises a large part of the Indian manufacturing industry, are highly price conscious. How do you help them see the value that you offer? In our experience, about 70 percent of our business in India comes from SMEs and the rest comes from large companies. The primary reason for the SME customers’ focus on price is that people who have the responsibility of making a buying decision, like, say, the purchase manager of an organization, is keener on reducing the purchase cost than on knowing more about any particular technology. At the same time, when you actually speak to a decision maker [at the helm] of an SME, his or her goal for his company is to grow and become bigger and better. Hence they invest the time needed to understand a new technology, and see how it can make their operations more efficient and successful. So when we talk to an SME, we take them through the benefits that they are going to get at the end of the manufacturing cycle. Therefore the purchasing deliberations are more extensive with SME customers compared to the larger customers.

Could you give the reasons for your participation in the show, and your expectations from a trade show such as this one, particularly at a time when the industrial growth is a bit subdued in general? The last ENGIMACH we participated in was 10 years ago. Much has happened in Gujarat since then. As you know, the city of Sanand in Gujarat is a major automobile hub. This year the automotive sector globally and in India is seeing a period of slow growth. We see this as the right time for our transformative solutions to reach the manufacturers [based at Sanand and other nearby industrial hubs]. It will give manufacturers the opportunity of redesigning their existing capital investment in a way that it performs better at a lower cost – and we are the champions of such a solution. Of course, the other key reason is that Gujarat is a vibrant and a very important manufacturing destination, which is going to become an even more significant global industrial hub in the future.

How has been your experience so far of the show? Yesterday [day one] was a slightly lean day, something that we expected, but today has been very good, very positive. The best thing is that the visitors are very well informed. They ask all the relevant questions; they are people from all the core industries located in the state. We are very happy with the visitor quality -both quantitatively and qualitatively the visitor walkins have been highly satisfactory. Schunk ENGIMACH 2019

ExpoDaily spoke to some of the buyers at the meet about their expectations and experience. Pemphero James Makutu, Manager, C2C Engineering Foundry and Machinery Industry, Malawi said that the buyer-seller meet has established a forum for open conversations with Indian suppliers who produce the tools and machines that Malawi doesn’t have presently. “I had the opportunity to see all the different kinds of machine tools at the show. I came here to look for CNC machines – they are everywhere. I am sure I will find a good pick for my company,” he added. Hamidou Boulama, CMO, Coyo Wellness (Cameroon) was happy with the overall experience and was confident that he will find his suppliers of choice for machines that specialize in metallurgy and piping. Sam Joseph, CEO, Golden Talons Enterprise, a buyer from Ghana, said, “Back in Ghana, we face issues regarding the availability of machinery and technology in general. The challenge we face is that suppliers from select countries have a monopoly on the supply. The African youth is vibrant; they want to do business but they don’t have the right technologies. That is the reason why some of us are here. We want to import the latest machines that you have here in India which can provide us employment and economic opportunities, and help forge a mutually-beneficial economic collaboration with the Indian industry.” All the buyers visiting from Africa thanked Ms Sunanda Rajendran, Secretary General, Indo African Chambers of Commerce and Industries, and the ENGIMACH organizers for the opportunity. 6 Day 3 • Friday 06.12.2019 CASE STUDY: RENISHAW

Accuracy is everything

Italian subcontract manufacturer, R. Busi, made a strategic decision to move to 5-axis co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs). Renishaw 5-axis measurement heads have enabled the company to meet the verification needs of increasingly complex part designs and deliver the tolerances and repeatability they demand. Founded in the Province of Pavia, Italy, by Raffaele Busi in 1946, R. Busi Officine Meccaniche di Precisione (Precision Mechanical Work) is a subcontract manufacturer of precision-engineered metal parts. R. Busi operates from a 22,000 sqm facility in Mezzanino, Italy, where its factory houses 40 production machines including lathes, 5-axis vertical milling machines and 4-axis horizontal machining centres. It employs 40 production personnel working in two shifts. The company manufactures precision parts in large series and also produces one-off prototypes for a large number of clients. It is particularly recognised for its work in the aerospace industry, where very high tolerances and high repeatability are paramount. Gianmarco Ballerini, Chief Technical Officer at R. Busi, said, “We are immensely proud of the precision work we do in technologically advanced sectors like aerospace. That said, some of our finest mechanical engineering work can be traced back to our very earliest days, producing the tiniest of components hidden away inside industrial sewing machines. Tolerances were extremely tight and a perfect mirror finish was needed; it was very demanding work even then.” Part verification and quality control are vitally important to R. Busi and the business has had to

evolve rapidly, from manual process measurements, often using precision tools designed and built in-house, to the use of programmable CMMs. As a part of its continual improvement philosophy, the company made the decision to move to 5-axis CMM part verification. Challenge Any evolution in the part verification process had to be capable of supporting the high production throughput levels achieved at the R. Busi factory. A migration to 5-axis CMMs needed to avoid introducing any obstacles or bottle-necks in operations. At the same time, the 5-axis measurement technology adopted by the company had to provide the flexibility required to verify a highly diverse range of parts produced for a wide range of different industrial sectors. Accuracy, of course, was an absolutely vital criteria in selecting a 5-axis metrology solution. It would need to meet the most exacting standards of the aerospace sector where 100% part verification is a prerequisite consideration. Solution Initially, the company had a measurement head retrofitted to an existing 3-axis CMM. Once the system was proven, two new CMMs were added, both specified to include

the 5-axis measurement heads at the outset. Renishaw’s REVO® and PH20 5-axis measurement systems were specified to be used. Results The introduction of 5-axis measurement technology has had a wide-ranging impact on R. Busi’s precision manufacturing operations as Mr Orlandi explains: “In short, having three 5-axis CMMs operating in a dedicated measurement room means we not only get extremely precise measurements, we get them very rapidly as well. By dramatically increasing measurement speed and significantly reducing production machinery downtime, the business has gained a serious productivity advantage.” “The sheer variety and complexity of parts that R. Busi needs to measure, makes it very difficult to exactly quantify all the improvements that have been achieved. All I’d say is that the move from more traditional measurement practices to 5-axis CMMs has been a great success and I wouldn’t go back to what we had before. Accuracy is everything to our business, and we now have the technology we need to deliver it well into the future.” RENISHAW ENGIMACH 2019 Hall 10 / Stall 32B

AMF Marking & Cleaning Tools The high economic efficiency of marking and cleaning products stems from the low procurement costs, long service life and high working speed.

CASE STUDY: ECOCLEAN INDIA

Cleaning and 100 percent Drying of 2W-Engine Parts. Ecoclean India partners with world’s largest manufacturer of TWO-WHEELERS in India for cleaning of Engine Assembly Parts. The cleaning solution has helped the customer not only to achieve stringent cleaning requirement but also 100% dry parts – A case study:

Engine Assembly Parts like crankcases, cylinder blocks, connecting rods, gears, forks, crankshafts need to be cleaning after the machining process before assembly. Cleaning of these parts is critical to the production process; customer was then using an in-line spray washing machine and compressed air for drying of the parts. The process involved mechanical travel of parts from one zone to the other; compressed air was used for drying the parts. The erstwhile cleaning machine of the customer was unable to deliver stringent cleaning requirements and failed to meet the challenges in the production process. this resulted into high cost of cleaning and high warranty cost in the field Challenge • Contamination: more than 50mg per work piece (oil, dust, chips and particles). • The required cleanliness result is less than 2 mg per work piece. • 100% dry parts. • Handling variety of parts with complex geometry. • Cycle time: 18 sec per engine. Solution After a comprehensive study of the cleanliness requirements, Ecoclean India suggested Universal 81W an aqueous based cleaning machine. Moreover, to meet the capacity requirements 2 machines with twin process chambers were suggested. Universal 81W is an aqueous based machine and its modular design offers options of: • Two stage immersion cleaning

AMF-Writers are tools that can be used for the permanent marking of work pieces on CNC milling as well as turn mill machines. With its special needle, marking can be achieved without the appearance of any cutting edges. The marking is accomplished through a combination of material compression and displacement. The tool can be used with or without machine spindle rotation. Moreover, marking is possible on smooth, uneven and rough surfaces with a deviation between 3 and 7 mm. The tool is infinitely adjustable for use on different materials, surface hardness and depth of marking. If used on 45 HRC hardened steel, the effective tool life will be equivalent to a marking distance of 70 km. High speed marking is also possible. The needles are highly wear resistance and thus offer a long service life. Additionally, it is suitable for marking thin-walled work pieces and round surfaces (up to 15 degree). Depending on the design, it is possible to mark surfaces with a hardness of up to 57 HRC. AMF-Cleaners are tools for cleaning workpieces, tools and the interior of CNC machines. They are preferably clamped in Weldon chucks and mounted in the machine spindle of a CNC machine.AMF Cleaners use through spindle coolant or compressed air. AMF Cleaners in Stick design are available in lengths of 30, 100 and 180mm and are ideally suitable for cleaning swarf from workpieces, vices and fixtures prior to unloading the workpieces and before the next workpieces is loaded. The spindle can be static or a slow rotation may be used to improve cleaning operation.AMF Cleaners in the Ball design are available with horizontal or vertical connection to the machine spindle and are designed for cleaning the entire interior working area of the machine tool. The user selects which nozzles to open which controls the direction and pressure of the jet. Moving and rotating the spindle under constant flow of coolant achieves and excellent and systematic cleaning of the machine interior. AMF-Cleaners are characterized by low acquisition costs and a long service life-their time saving will impress you. AMF ENGIMACH 2019 Hall 11 / Stall 65
