The Monona Community Pool is a 300,000 gallon outdoor pool with a water slide, two diving boards, eight 25-meter lap lanes, a shallow end, a wading pool, and concession stand. Look no further than the Monona Community Pool for a summer of cool, refreshing fun!The Monona Community Pool offers both birthday party packages and private pool rentals. Both residents and non-residents are invited to enjoy this wonderful community amenity.

Fire Chief Scott Sullivan heads the department and supervises paid-on-call firefighters, along with eight full-time employees serving as firefighters, paramedics and fire inspectors. The department is responsible for inspecting commercial, industrial, and multi-unit residential buildings in the city to ensure compliance with state and local fire codes.

The City of Monona has more than 105 acres of parks and 220 acres of Monona Wetland Conservancy that includes parks, beaches, 10 parks with lake access, five reservable park shelters, 11 playgrounds, a skate park, tennis courts, athletic fields, a community pool, and community center. The Parks & Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for kids and adults as well as festivals and events throughout the year. Below is a partial list of programs offered. BIKE TRAILS

Capital City State Trail - an asphalt trail that connects with the Military Ridge State Trail, Madisonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Southwest Path and Badger State Trail. Nine miles runs through the scenic Capital Springs State Recreation Area. A state trail pass is required and can be purchased at trailheads or at the DNR Service Center at 101 S. Webster Street in Madison. Call (608) 266-2621 for more details or visit dnr.wi.gov. Glacial Drumlin State Trail - stretches for 52 miles through farmlands and glacial topography and runs from Cottage Grove to Waukesha. The trail is on an abandoned rail corridor, except for a 1.5-mile section northeast of Jefferson, between State Highway 26 and County Highway Y, which uses public roads as the trail route. The smooth surface of the trail is crushed packed limestone until 13 miles from Waukesha where it becomes asphalt. A state trail pass is required. LOWER YAHARA RIVER TRAIL - An approximately 2.5-mile off-road trail that spans scenic Lake Waubesa. The trail connects Lake Farm County Park and the Capital City State Trail on the western end of the trail with McDaniel Park in McFarland anchoring the eastern end of the trail. Free parking is available at both entry points. The

LOWER YAHARA RIVER TRAIL

trail runs alongside an active railroad trestle with one mile of continuous bridges and boardwalks on the north shore of Lake Waubesa, making it the longest multi-use boardwalk in North America. An accessible fishing pier, rest stops and observation areas with scenic views of Lake Waubesa are available along the trail. Users can access the trail from the east at McDaniel Park in the Village of McFarland or from the west at the Capital City State Trail using the Lewis Nine Springs E-Way parking lot on Moorland Road. The trail does not require a trail pass but the Cap City State Trail does require a state trail pass if you continue riding to the west. Monona Lake Loop - a 12 mile bike loop that circles scenic Lake Monona and connects to the Cap City Trail to downtown Madison. Ride past several parks including Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Schluter Beach and the Monona Terrace. One of the best rides in the Madison area!

This land eventually became Olbrich Park. Then in 1952, the first structures were constructed in what is now Olbrich’s Sunken Garden. MEMORIAL DAY PA R A DE

The Monona Memorial Day Parade is the largest parade in Wisconsin with approximately 100 parade entries each year! The parade honors all who have or are currently serving our country. It’s a family fun event that features local veterans, teeming with marching bands, unique entertainment and, of course, Bucky Badger! The Memorial Day Parade kicks off every Memorial Day Monday with the singing of the National Anthem at the Monona Grove High School at 9:30am. A memorial service is held immediately following the anthem and is led by V.F.W. Post 7591. The parade heads south on Monona Drive at the 4400 block of Monona Drive at 10am. It continues south to Owen Road and ends at

Village Lanes. Monona Drive is closed to traffic at 9am on Memorial Day each year. When Europeans first traveled to this area in the 1600’s, the French found the Ho-Chunk living here in abundance. Large areas of agriculture were in place within the four lakes region. The oak savannas were full of bison, elk and deer, the waters were pristine and full of fish, and the skies were full of migratory birds passing through the region.

HO-CHUNK history The Ho-Chunk term Dejope refers to a region known today as Madison, Wisconsin. Dejope (Te Joop) literally means four lakes, which describes the lakes of Mendota, Monona, Waubesa and Kegonsa.

The Howigera (Catfish), or what is now known as the Yahara River, connects the chain of Madison lakes and links to the Mississippi watershed system. What is interesting about the Dejope/Madison area is, whether by water or by land, it has been a center of commerce for the Ho-Chunk people for thousands of years, as attested to by the many overland trails that converged in this location. An interesting aspect of the Madison area is that the Dejope is located in the center of what is known as the Effigy Mounds region. Around 2,500 – 2,200 YBP, ancestors of the Ho-Chunk began to create earthen mounds throughout their

aboriginal homelands. What’s known is, the first mounds in this area were conical in shape and were mainly used to bury certain members of the tribe in locations of cultural prominence. It is estimated there were at one time, over 1,500 mounds within the Dejope/Madison area alone. Yet, sadly today, around 80% of these have been destroyed due to the advancement of society. Currently, the Ho-Chunk Nation is working alongside the Wisconsin State Historical Society and other groups to assure that the remaining earthworks are afforded appropriate protection from further destruction. Archaeologists today continue to unearth items from locations such as the “Lake Farm Site,” situated along the shore of Lake Monona from the Paleo period, 10–12,000 years ago.

As the French explorers arrived, they began to settle amongst the Ho-Chunk and the fur trade began a new era of commerce. By the 1700’s, the French were forced to give way to the British who soon were replaced by the early Americans. The HoChunk remained an integral part of the Madison area, adapting to pioneers and settlers. Soon though, this came to pass in the 1800’s as the U.S. Government began to take the lands in a series of forced land session treaties. After the Winnebago Treaties of 1832 and 1837, came the forced removal from the region to four different reservations west of the Mississippi. This caused a fraction within the Ho-Chunk Tribe for those who were forced to relocate and others who elected to hide out and avoid capture and remain in their ancestral homelands. Years later, after repeated attempts to remove the Ho-Chunk from the region, several Ho-Chunk were allowed to purchase land and were then given the ability to live in Wisconsin once again, although Native Americans were not legally recognized as U.S. citizens until 1924. The Ho-Chunk still reside in the Madison area. As time continues, the Ho-Chunk look forward to remaining here as good neighbors and to continue on as good stewards in this region they call home. Our ancestors have always been buried here to carry on in their long journeys, and, we too will have this privilege one day, as we carry on in our sacred way of life.
