In the summer, this park is busy with league soccer and in the winter, the two sledding hills are packed with children enjoying the snow. OLBRICH BEACH & PARK - 3527 Atwood Avenue Located on Lake Monona, Olbrich Park is one of Madison’s largest lakefront parks. Swimming, fishing, athletic fields, sledding hill, basketball and tennis courts, and boat launch are available. Lifeguards on duty, restrooms and picnic tables.

LEWIS NINE SPRINGS E-WAY 1947 Moorland Road, Madison, WI 53711 An environmental corridor that runs seven miles through the southern Madison area. The trail system is ideal for jogging, hiking, biking, nature study, photography and cross-country skiing. An excellent outdoor classroom for nature studies, science projects and field trips. The trailhead near Lake Farm Park can be reached from US Hwy 12/18, south on South Towne Drive and then east on Moorland Road to the Lewis Nine Springs E-Way parking lot.

The smooth surface of the trail is crushed packed limestone until 13 miles from Waukesha where it becomes asphalt. A state trail pass is required. LOWER YAHARA RIVER TRAIL - a new trail that will extend from the Capital City Trail near the Lussier Family Heritage Center to the western shore of Lake Waubesa. The longest continuous bicycle/pedestrian bridge and boardwalk system in the state. Anticipated completion is May/June 2017. More info on Dane County Parks website at countyofdane.com/lwrd/parks. MONONA LAKE LOOP - a 12 mile bike loop that circles scenic Lake Monona and connects to the Cap City Trail to downtown Madison. This trail winds through some of Monona’s most spectacular neighborhoods and provides beautiful views of Lake Monona. Ride past several parks including Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Schluter Beach and the Monona Terrace. One of the best rides in the Madison area!

BIKE TRAILS

CAPITAL CITY STATE TRAIL - an asphalt trail that connects with the Military Ridge State Trail, Madison’s Southwest Path and Badger State Trail. Nine miles runs through the scenic Capital Springs State Recreation Area. A state trail pass is required and can be purchased at trailheads or at the DNR Service Center at 101 S. Webster Street in Madison. Call (608) 266-2621 for more details or visit dnr.wi.gov. GLACIAL DRUMLIN STATE TRAIL - stretches for 52 miles through farmlands and glacial topography and runs from Cottage Grove to Waukesha. The library is proud to continue to build on that foundation, as they expand the early literacy offerings with the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program and their focus on local history with the Monona History Club. One-on-one tech tutoring with resident gadget guru, Dan, and library staff is available. Expanded art displays, new children’s tech and learning toys, and additional seating in the lower level café and on the outdoor patio make the library a wonderful place to enjoy the day. HO-CHUNK history The Ho-Chunk term Dejope refers to an area or region known today as Madison, Wisconsin. Dejope (Te Joop) literally means four lakes, which describes the lakes of Mendota, Monona, Waubesa and Kegonsa. The “Howigera” (Catfish), or what is now known as the Yahara River connects the chain of Madison lakes and links to the Mississippi watershed system. What is interesting about the Dejope/Madison area is, whether by water or by land, it has been a center of commerce for the Ho-Chunk people for thousands of years, as attested to by the many overland trails that converged in this location. An interesting aspect of the Madison area is that the Dejope is located in the center of what is known as the Effigy Mounds region. Around 2,500 – 2,200 YBP, ancestors of the HoChunk began to create earthen mounds throughout

their aboriginal homelands. What’s known is, the first mounds in this area were conical in shape and were mainly used to bury certain members of the tribe in locations of cultural prominence. In time, the earthworks became more elaborate; taking on integral aspects of the culture and soon began to be placed in various shapes and formations—many of which reflect the very same 12 clans of today. It is estimated there were at one time, over 1,500 mounds within the Dejope/Madison area alone. Yet, sadly today, around 80% of these have been destroyed due to the advancement of society. Currently, the Ho-Chunk Nation is working alongside the Wisconsin State Historical Society and other groups to assure that the remaining earthworks are afforded appropriate protection from further destruction.

Ho-Chunk stories regarding the Dejope area describes how the four lakes came to be. As the last glacier began to recede to the north and as the Ho-Chunk returned to this area from a place referred to as “a place of refuge,” Dejope became one of the first places of re-inhabitants. Village sites such as Te Waksik Hominik and Te Wiix reach as far back as what archaeologists refer to as the “Paleo” period (10–12,000 YBP). Archaeologists today continue to unearth items from locations such as the “Lake Farm Site,” situated along the shore of Lake Monona which supports the Ho-Chunk’s ability to claim occupation from the last glacial period to present. At the beginning of Wisconsin’s “historic period” (1600’s to present), when the first Europeans traveled to this area, the French found the Ho-Chunk living here in abundance. Large areas of agriculture were in place within the four lakes region. The oak savannas were full of bison, elk and deer, the waters were pristine and full of fish, and the skies were full of migratory birds passing through the region.

As the French explorers arrived in the 1600’s, they began to settle amongst the Ho-Chunk and the fur trade began a new era of commerce. In time, the French were forced to give way to the British in the 1700’s, who soon were replaced by the early Americans. Through all of this, the Ho-Chunk remained an integral part of the Dejope/Madison area, adapting to pioneers and settlers that would come and go. Soon though, this came to pass in the 1800’s as the U.S. Government began to take the lands that included the Madison area from the Ho-Chunk through a series of forced land session treaties. After the Winnebago Treaties of 1832 and 1837, came the forced removal from the region to no less than four different reservations west of the Mississippi. This caused a fraction within the Ho-Chunk Tribe for those who were forced to relocate and others who elected to hide out and avoid capture in order to remain in their ancestral homelands. Years later, after repeated attempts to remove the Ho-Chunk from the region, several Ho-Chunk were allowed to purchase land and were then given the ability to live in Wisconsin once again, although Native Americans were not legally recognized as U.S. citizens until 1924. Today, the Ho-Chunk still reside as one of its oldest modern inhabitants known as Dejope. Children are told that, “we have always lived here in the past, that we are still here as a presence today, and wish for them to remain here into the future.” The Madison area is a good place to be, as the history and fond memories attest to. As time continues, the Ho-Chunk look forward to remaining here as good neighbors and to continue on as good stewards in this region called home. As the Ho-Chunk Nation continues on, the Ho-Chunk People will always have the ability to call the Dejope/Madison area their own and have been blessed to be placed here to live as a part of Mother Earth. The Monona Mural

The Monona Mural Project is a joint project to create a long-lasting, dynamic art tribute to what makes Monona special. It is a collaboration led by City of Monona, MG21 Charter School and Dane Arts Mural Arts (DAMA). Monona will partner with other community groups and the Ho-Chunk Nation to create a 120’ mural on Monona’s well house #3 on West Broadway near the Beltline Highway entrance. The mural will be installed in Spring 2017.
