SUMMER 2022 STAKEHOLDER UPDATE What is Mersey Maritime and why are you receiving this document?

Mersey Maritime is the UK’s leading maritime cluster organisation and is the voice for the maritime industry in the Liverpool City Region and surrounding area. As a not-forprofit organisation, we are supported by industry, academia and local government with a network and eco-system touching some 200 member businesses and supporting nearly 2,000 wider maritime stakeholders.

This edition of our Stakeholder Briefing has a specific focus on two significant activities that Mersey Maritime has recently been involved with: • •

The launch of our latest economic impact analysis: the Liverpool City Region ‘State of the Maritime Region’ Report 2022 The 4th Mersey Maritime Exchange Conference held on Thursday 23rd June 2022 at Liverpool Town Hall and focused on the delivery of Maritime 2050

Both of these activities underline the significance of the maritime industry in the Liverpool City Region and the wider North West and the role that Mersey Maritime plays on a national level in promoting and supporting the sector. To emphasise this point, we have recently launched the 8th Mersey Maritime Industry Awards (#MMIA22) which are set to take place at Liverpool Cathedral on Thursday 10th November 2022.

This Stakeholder Briefing will provide you with key information about the maritime sector, which is a key economic driver for the region. A further version will be released later in the Autumn.

However, you don’t need to wait until then to keep updated on our activities and those of our members. Each month we issue an electronic ‘Ezine’ which includes all the most topical maritime news for the region and is well worth a read. NEW STATE OF THE MARITIME REGION REPORT 2022 In 2021, Mersey Maritime commissioned the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) to undertake a comprehensive economic impact analysis to highlight the contribution the industry makes to the Liverpool City Region economy. The findings were released at a special event on Thursday 23rd June 2022 at Liverpool Town Hall with a range of local and regional stakeholders present and featuring keynote addresses by CEO of Mersey Maritime, Chris Shirling-Rooke, Sir Michael Bibby Bt. DL, and Shadow Maritime Minister, Mike Kane MP. The full ‘State of the Maritime Region Report’ document gives details of the key findings for the period 2017 to 2019 and builds on the first comprehensive analysis which was published in Autumn 2019. This section of the briefing gives a summary of the key headlines.

A growing sector The ‘State of the Maritime Region Report’ covers the whole industry across a range of economic metrics, including: turnover, GVA, employment, the compensation of employees, Exchequer contribution and exports. The analysis is presented both in a ‘direct’ and ‘aggregate’ form and contains a forward look forecast too. The document, available to download here, summarises the key findings for the period from 2010, but specifically from 2017 to 2019.

THE MARITIME INDUSTRY IN THE LIVERPOOL CITY REGION

NEW STATE OF THE MARITIME NATION REPORT 2022 The Liverpool City Region economic analysis report which was launched in June was part of a wider national project to assess the impact of the maritime industry on the UK economy as a whole. Maritime UK commissioned this work via the Centre for Economics and Business Research. The report reveals: • • •

The £116bn economic impact of UK maritime, more than rail and aviation combined.

That the industry supported 1,064,000 jobs in 2019, 45% more productive than the UK average, and well paid, with average remuneration 30% higher than the UK benchmark.

The UK’s industry grew by 35% between 2010-19 and is projected to exceed pre-pandemic growth this year, thanks to ambitious investment pipelines and global transport recovery.

SNAPSHOT: WHAT MARITIME MEANS TO THE UK ECONOMY Turnover

£55.5 billion in direct terms

In 2019, maritime contributed £116bn in total turnover to the UK economy, 35% higher than 2010. For every £1 of turnover generated directly by the sector, a further £1.09 was generated indirectly across the supply chain, underscoring the far-reaching impact of an industry that carries 95% of Britain’s global trade.

The sector’s direct turnover stood at £55bn in 2019, which outstrips the economic contribution of rail and aviation combined, and puts the industry ahead of road transport. And in 2019, UK maritime supported £48.9billion in GVA, an increase of 39% on 2010.

According to the Cebr, the sector’s ambitious investment pipeline and a quick recovery in global transport patterns, will lead to growth exceeding pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022.

Between 2021-2025, the Cebr predicts UK maritime will grow by 16%.

NATIONAL THOUGHT LEADERSHIP AT A REGIONAL LEVEL Fourth Mersey Maritime Exchange Conference delivered!

The 4th Mersey Maritime Exchange Conference took place on Thursday 23rd June 2022 at Liverpool Town Hall, in-person and online. The focus was on the Department for Transport’s strategy document, Maritime 2050, and progress around the delivery of key priorities with panel sessions on the environment, people & skills, regional growth and technology and innovation.

Keynote addresses were given by Maritime Minister, Robert Courts MP, Victoria Race (DfT), Mike Kane MP (Shadow Maritime Minister) and Sir Michael Bibby Bt. DL. 140 people attended in-person and at least 150 were present online for the event which featured a number of key announcements, including the launch of the Department for Transport ‘Maritime Sector Recovery Route Map’ which is available to view HERE in full.

MERSEY MARITIME INDUSTRY AWARDS #MMIA22 The Mersey Maritime Industry Awards are a firm fixture in the calendar of the UK maritime industry. The next iteration of them comes as the regional cluster organisation celebrates its 20th year of work and are set to be the biggest and most high profile yet within the spectacular surroundings of Liverpool Cathedral. The event will be held on Thursday 10th November 2022.

The UK’s leading maritime awards ceremony celebrates the achievements of the industry’s most outstanding companies and individuals. Applications are encouraged from any maritime or maritime related organisation, business and/or individual that operate in, or support, the North West region. The theme this year is ‘Our Time is Now’ with a focus on the bright future that lies ahead for the industry and will see awards given in the following categories: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
