MORE TREES, LIGHTING, PATIOS WANTED ON QUILCHENA After highlighting the City of Merritt’s Concept Design and Revitalization Strategy for Spirit Square in last week’s edition, this week we look at Quilchena Avenue.

As the core of Merritt’s shopping district, Quilchena Avenue plays a vital role in any revitalization project focused on downtown.

The stretch between Voght Street and Garcia Street is a key component of the new Concept Design and Revitalization Strategy, developed by Modus Planning Design and Engagement (MODUS) alongside the City of Merritt.

“Quilchena Avenue is an important pedestrian and retail street, at the heart of downtown Merritt,” reads the report submitted to city council at its Dec. 9 meeting. “It has a variety of small shops, good tree canopy, parking available, seating and seasonal programming (such as the car show and Christmas parade).

Together, these elements make it a successful downtown street.”

Throughout the summer months, residents and business owners alike were polled as to how to improve the stretch of road, with pollsters hearing things like consistent street furnishings that are easier to maintain, a tree strategy to support long-term maintenance, climate resilience, and accessibility, as well as adding special lighting and creating more spaces for seating and patios.

Centre to the proposed concept is a special mid-block pedestrian area, which includes a curb-less environment to slow cars and support mid-block crossing.

Bollards, special paving, and catenary lighting further define the pedestrian

priority for this space.

Honeylocusts continue to be the primary street tree, though ornamental trees like hackberry and serviceberry are considered within the concept design process.

What’s next?

With the report completed and presented to council, a detailed design program would be needed to develop construction drawings and begin the permitting process. The current concepts are not issued for construction, and are based solely on site observations and aerial photographs.

Calls for mental health issues once again saw an increase in Merritt in 2025, continuing the trend of a steady rise since 2022.

Merritt RCMP Detachment Commander Josh Roda will be presenting an overview of the year’s calls to local Mounties to city staff on Dec. 18, a year that to date has seen 228 Mental Health Act files, up from 201 in 2024.

It marks a significant increase over the past four yearly reporting periods, beginning with just 166 calls in 2022.

“These files demand a considerable investment of police time and resources, a challenge compounded by reduced local mental health services in Merritt,” said Roda. “In many cases, officers are required to transport individuals to Kamloops, which diverts them from criminal investigations and proactive policing initiatives. This ongoing strain underscores the need for enhanced local supports to ensure that police resources can be more effectively directed toward community safety and crime prevention.”

Total calls down Overall, 2025 numbers show a slight reduction in calls for service compared to the previous year. To date, officers

have responded to 6,374 calls, below last year’s total of 6,762. However, this yearly statistic has steadily stayed above 6,000 since 2021.

“While the overall volume is slightly reduced compared to 2024, the consistency in demand underscores both the ongoing needs of the community and the sustained commitment of our Detachment to meet them,” said Roda.

Total charges down As of Dec. 9, 2025, Merritt RCMP had submitted 400 charges this year to the BC Prosecution Service. However, Roda believes this reduction can be attributed to a shift in approach to submitting stronger, more complete files that are less likely to result in ‘no charge’ decisions.

“By focusing on quality over quantity, we aim to respect Crown resources, reduce inefficiencies, and deliver more meaningful outcomes for the community,” added Roda.

2025 also saw the arrival of four new officers to the detachment, all of whom are in their recruit field training. 2026 should also see some effective advancements in police technology on the force, with the Merritt detachment being equiped with body-worn cameras for transparency and accountability.

Even good boys and girls need paperwork, as it is once again time to renew your dog licences.

Merritt dog owners will need to visit city hall in-person before Jan. 1, 2026 to pick up their dog tags for the calendar year.

The in-house licensing returned in 2024 after a three-year agreement with DocuPet, which began in 2020. Throughout its tenure, the city saw “a significant reduction in the number of registered dogs” through the online DocuPet service, as well as communication issues between pet owners and the service.

The City of Merritt mandates that all dogs over six months of age must be licensed, with owners required to pay an

annual fee for this licence. Owners may have up to two dogs per residence. Bylaw Services may, upon request, allow an owner to have more than two dogs in exceptional circumstances.

Every resident dog requires a valid licence. Dog licence tags must be affixed to their collar and visible at all times.

Any owner who has not already set up a City of Merritt account for their dog is asked to bring a valid Veterinarian’s Certificate as proof of spay or neuter.

While just one may still be too many, the number of impaired drivers stopped in this year’s Light Up the Province campaign by BC Highway Patrol dropped compared to 2024.

Over 52,000 vehicles were stopped on Dec. 6 during the impaired driving enforcement night, compared to approximately 43,000 the year before.

Despite that, the number of prohibitions handed out was just 190, significantly less than the 222 in December 2024.

“Most drivers are supportive of police efforts to keep impaired drivers off the road, even though check stops can be an inconvenience,” said Inspector Adam Tallboy with BC Highway Patrol.

“Mandatory Alcohol Screening continues to be a great tool, as multiple impaired drivers were pulled off the road even though they did not show any symptoms until they were breath tested.”

OTHER SOLUTIONS NEEDED FOR SPIRIT SQUARE

Editor, We are really saddened to see Merritt’s Spirit Square fenced off to prevent people from accessing it. And it is especially ironic that the City’s community Christmas tree stands alone inside the enclosure.

In past years, people were invited to hang socks, gloves and other items on the tree for use by the valley’s homeless population.

According to an article in the Sept. 22 Merritt Herald, security measures at Spirit Square were taken because of reports of “frequent trespass, vandalism, open defecation/urination, and disruptive behavior by various groups, impacting use of the space and surrounding properties.”

Mayor Goetz was quoted in the same article as saying that people were “terrified to go downtown” because of this behavior in Spirit Square.

Public health and safety are critical concerns for a community, but was entirely shutting down Spirit Square the only feasible option for the City park originally developed as a gathering place? Why don’t we work toward some other solutions?

We acknowledge the very real health and safety concerns at Spirit Square, but also recognize that for many people, including some struggling with poverty, homelessness, addictions, direct and intergenerational trauma and other mental health issues, it has been a comparatively safe, welcoming and supportive place to gather. A place for connection.

The people displaced from Spirit Square will not disappear. Nor are they likely to leave the valley. For a

number of them, the Nicola Valley has been their ancestral home for generations, even millennia. They will gather in other locations in the city, some of which may be hidden and unsafe, others which may cause concern to downtown merchants and their customers.

Were public health and safety really the only reasons for shutting down Spirit Square or was another objective to displace vulnerable people because poverty, homelessness and addictions reflect badly on the City’s image?

Judging from some of the discourse on the subject, there are those who just want to ship these people out of town.

One way of judging the wellness of a community is by how it treats its most vulnerable members. There are several efforts in the Nicola Valley by various individuals and service agencies to provide caring services and supports for people like those who have been effectively evicted from Spirit Square. It is very difficult work and often opposed by those who wish the problem and the people would just go away.

Over the past several months, a number of us have been getting together informally as the “Nicola Valley Healing Alliance” to try to coordinate our efforts, identify gaps and overlaps and priorities for enhancing services for vulnerable populations in the valley.

Currently, we are exploring the idea of a community “Hub”- a supervised but low-barrier facility where street-engaged people can spend time, be with others and access services. It could potentially double as a warming and cooling centre during extreme weather and provide services after hours and on weekends when most other local social service agency offices are closed. There are examples of such initiatives throughout BC, for example Maple Ridge, Nanaimo, Victoria, Kamloops and Kelowna.

Many of these initiatives are supported by local municipal councils.

Shutting down Spirit Square and having the community Christmas tree in a cage surely can’t be our only collective response to the challenges facing people

struggling with poverty, homelessness, addictions, direct and intergenerational trauma and other mental health issues. We are planning to meet as the Nicola Valley Healing Alliance early in the new year to see how we can effectively bring together interested individuals, agencies and local governments to develop a collaborative approach to these challenges in a way that respects the value of all Nicola Valley people. We hope we can work along with the City of Merritt in these efforts.

HOCKEY GAME ERUPTS IN HEATED DISPUTE The old rivalry between Merritt and Princeton flared again last night as the hockey game between Prlnceton and the Quilchena Braves was marred by a heated dispute that held up the game for 15 minutes.

With the resumption of play, Princeton emerged viciorious by a score of 8 to 3.

The dispute broke out at the 15 minute mark of the second period when Doug Hogg of the Braves checked Tino Libratore against the boards. As the puck sprang loose to another Princeton player, referee Emie Grams signalled for a delayed penalty.

For some reason this incensed player-coach-manager-trainer Les Ceccone of the the Princeton team who proceeded to describe the referee in terms that if not complimentary were at least colourful.

Would you know what to do if you found a protected wild bird in need of help on your property?

That was the case for Chief Lindsay Tighe of Shackan Indian Band, who recently found an injured bald eagle on his property.

His first call was to the nłe?képmx Guardians, part of the Indigenous Guardians Programs across Canada whose core identity is to provide active stewardship to their lands and waters.

“We got a call from Chief Lindsay to his property up on Sunshine Valley,” said Willow Johnny, one of the Guardians tasked with rescuing the majestic injured animal. “There were unknown injuries, we don’t know what happened.”

before laying down in a hayfield, and upon spotting it again slightly further away, the Guardians were called in to transport it to BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops.

The eagle turned out to be a full-grown adult bird, requiring careful movement with its unknown injuries.

“We picked it up and it spent the night at my place,” said Frank Sterling, another Guardian on the case. “We drove him to BC Wildlife Park first thing in the morning.”

For Sterling, it was the second bald eagle he has cared for under his title as a Guardian.

Bighorn sheep are also another animal that has been brought to their attention before, among others, as just a part of what the Guardians do to protect and restore the natural plant and animal life of the land.

It’s the little things that often are forgotten about that we miss when they are gone, and for Vicki Hansen, that will be the conversations that spark between customers in her shop.

“People come in, they browse, talk to me, but then someone else will come in they know and then there’s just chatter going around,” said Hansen.

After four years in its location at 1974 Quilchena Avenue, and three years in its spot on the other side of Voght Street, Miss Vicki’s Petals and Plants will be shutting its doors for good on Dec. 24 as Hansen begins her retirement.

It was Dec. 14 that the shop celebrated its four-year anniversary at its current location, tucked in beside the Love to Dance studio. Hansen enjoyed always getting a little sneak preview of what was coming up in their routines, hearing them rehearse through the walls behind her till.

Those who have called Merritt home for longer will remember her shop at the current home of NV Tour Golf, where it stood for three years before needing more floor space for the neverending arrangement of flowers, knicknacks and homemade creations that made Hansen’s shop one of the best in town for gift giving.

Coloquially known as Miss Vicki, Hansen established herself as the go-to florist in town after her many years in the floral department of Save On Foods, known as Overwaitea Foods when she first began her journey.

not only a local business owner, but an outspoken supporter of shopping all things local.

“Support your neighbour,” said Hansen.

“Merritt needs you. If we don’t support local business, there will be nothing.”

One of Hansen’s final acts as a Merritt business owner was a philanthropic one just in time for the holidays - close to 300 planter arrangements were distributed to care homes in the community for Christmas.

Hansen said she came up with the idea after seeing something similar happen n the United States.

“My mom was in Coquihalla House many, many years ago, and I remember people never having visitors,” said Hansen.

She would bring her dog, Brutus, to see the residents, where he was

met with nothing but praise and adoration.

“But a lot of those were the same folks that never got any company. And that’s what got me thinking.

Mom was spoiled, she had visitors all the time, but some people are just left there and forgotten about.

So wouldn’t it be nice if we could just send a little something?”

Each little arrangement came with a handwritten card, and was distributed to Coquihalla/Gillis, The Florentine, and Nicola Meadows.

“It’s such a community thing. I didn’t think we were going to make it, but we did.”

With doors closing, Hansen is now reflecting on the memories she has made.

“It’s been an interesting life, and I don’t regret it.

I’ve met wonderful people who’ve absolutely amazed me and supported me.”

STEAMPUNK STEM AT LOWER NICOLA JAKE COURTEPATTE

Let there be light, says Donelda Haller’s Grade 4/5 class at Lower Nicola Indian Band School.

The class recently had the opportunity to build working steampunk-style lamps as an engaging and rewarding STEM project, applying real-world problem-solving skills as they measured, designed and assembled metal piping while learning how electrical circuits work.

“They practised teamwork, safety, creativity and perseverance as they experimented with different configurations

and overcame construction challenges,” said Haller.

Robinson Supply in Kamloops donated all of the material pieces for the pipes, with special assembly help from Mike Kempf.

“This hands-on projected connected science, technology, engineering and math in a meaningful way, and the final lamps are not only functional but a proud display of the students’ craftmanship and learning,” added Haller.

Mrs. Haller and her class would like to thank those involved with making these projects a reality.

While a BAC of .08 is typically the legal limit, impairment can occur at much lower levels. A driver can be arrested with a BAC lower than .08 if a law enforcement officer has probable cause to believe the driver is impaired. More importantly, any level of impairment significantly increases the likelihood of a traffic crash, putting your life and the lives of others in danger.

The bottom line? If you plan on drinking, getting behind the wheel is always a bad idea.

Money is being raised to support a 150 Mile House teenager and her family following a highway crash south of Kamloops left her with severe injuries.

According to an online fundraiser, 150 Mile House resident Katie Chenier was a passenger in a car that was involved in a crash on the Coquihalla Highway

south of Kamloops on Saturday.

She was taken to Royal Inland Hospital before being flown to Vancouver General Hospital, where she’s now waiting to have surgery on her spine.

The fundraiser was launched by a family friend to help support Chenier and her family, with the goal of raising $50,000. More than $28,000 had been donated as of

Monday afternoon.

“The support and love this cowgirl and our families are getting is beyond words and has moved us to tears many times,” an

update from the family reads.

“Keep praying to whatever god you believe in for Katie as she still needs all the help she can get.”

A Kamloops-area woman who shot her husband to death while camping has been denied day parole, in part because she continues to deny responsibility in prison.

Ashleigh Tschritter, 36, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2023 after a jury found her guilty of manslaughter.

She shot and killed her husband, David Joseph Robert Simpson, on Sept. 6, 2020, at a campsite off a forest service road north of Clearwater, not far from where they lived.

Court heard Tschritter and Simpson were arguing before the fatal shot was fired.

An eyewitness

testified that he saw Tschritter retrieve a shotgun and kill Simpson, then stomp on his head.

When Tschritter phoned 911, she told the operator Simpson killed himself.

Risk deemed too high The Parole Board of Canada found that Tschritter’s release would present an undue risk to society.

A central issue at her Nov. 27 parole hearing was the board’s finding that she continues to deny and minimize her role in the shooting. She also refers to it as “an accident.”

“It was the impression of the board you have developed a pattern

for continual denying and displacing responsibility for your behaviours onto others and will only admit to them after seeing no other options,” their decision reads.

“This pattern has also continued while incarcerated.”

Tschritter has been involved in alleged institutional breaches involving drugs and brewmaking while behind bars, though she denies any wrongdoing.

Release plan rejected Tschritter applied for day parole and proposed a two-tiered release plan that would have seen her living in a halfway house close to her elderly parents in Northern

B.C. after first completing residential addictions treatment.

Despite the solid plan, the board ruled Tschritter’s lack of insight and accountability present too great a risk.

“The positive factors in your case do not sufficiently counter the weight of the present concerns and negative aspects of your case,” the decision reads.

Tschritter recently became eligible for full parole, having served one third of the eight years remaining on her sentence after she was given credit for time served.

She will be eligible for statutory release in 2028 and her sentence will expire in 2031.

A divisional rivalry in the KIJHL was reborn on Friday, Dec. 12, in a matchup between the Merritt Centennials and Princeton Posse that always promises to be physical.

The Cents entered the game on the road well back of the Posse in the Bill Olhausen division, having fallen to Princeton earlier this season in their only other matchup.

An uneventful first period was followed by three unanswered goals in the second by the Centennials, two off the stick of Steven Foster and one by Noah Lawless.

Princeton broke the shutout just before the 15 minute mark of the period before the rough stuff broke out, with 44 minutes in penalties handed out in a 14 second stretch of play, leading to a Merritt powerplay and Foster’s third of the night for a 4-1 lead.

The sides exchanged a goal each in the third, including an empty netter from Kaden Wilkins, for a final score of 5-2 for the Cents.

A shootout loss the next day to the Kelowna Chiefs meant points in both weekend games, leaving the Cents with a record of 12-11-1-1.

Trade boolsters scoring touch

A total of four player contracts changed hands over the weekend between the Cents and the Columbia Valley Rockies, with the Merritt squad picking up forward Carter Valker and defenceman Lukas Masters in exchange for forward Lachlan Hanton and defenceman Ezra Siemens.

The Alberta-born Hanton was in his first year with the Cents, notching a pair of goals and assists in 17 games before the trade. Siemens, a veteran staple of the Merritt blue line for the past two seasons, leaves the team after a fourpoint effort over 20 games this season.

“Making moves at this time of year is never easy, especially when it means saying goodbye to first-class people like Lachlan and Ezra,” said Head Coach Wes McLeod. “They were great teammates, great people, and they gave everything they had to this organization. We’re truly thankful for what they brought to our room and to our community, and we wish them nothing but success in the next chapter of their careers.”

In return, the Cents get a 20-year-old Velker who has played at near a pointper-game pace in his three seasons with Columbia Valley, including 22 points in 24 games so far this year. He is joined by Masters, who is playing at the highest productivity level of his junior career

Inclement weather, road closures and treacherous conditions notwithstanding, the Bear Grease crew as well as the audience braved it all to make it for this unique, community-only musical performance that took place at the Merritt Civic Centre on December 13.

In attendance were members and elders who came from as far as Boston Bar, Nicomen and Siska

Indian bands, some of the eight Participating Bands of the Citwx Nlaka’pamux Assembly (CNA), to watch the Edmonton-based Bear Grease cast perform in Merritt for the first time ever.

Bear Grease, the all-Indigenous musical parody that has been captivating audiences across North America, is the reimagining of the iconic 1971 musical Grease through a bold and comedic native lens - an

experience that the community members were very much looking forward to.

Lesley Elliott of the Nooatich Indian Band was one attendee mesmerized by the performance.

“There were a lot of insights. It was quite creative to weave our reality into their performances. The performance was thought-provoking and inspiring. It was a good motivation for the community to laugh and look beyond our past

struggles.”

The infusion of the language into the modern scenario won the hearts of the community.

Revitalizing Grease with vibrant cultural expression, the ‘Tell Me More’ song received a huge round of applause. The Metis jigging as well as the Salish drumming got thunderous reactions from the audience. The popular ‘Wichihin’ had all the elements to go viral. The rap and

fusion mix as well as the break-dancing struck the right chord, especially with the younger ones in the audience. Bear Grease’s unique way of engaging the audience with eye contact and gestures into their performance of the Pow-wow led to a standing ovation.

The Bear Grease cast was thrilled with the love and reception they received.

HEADSTART/DAYCARE MANAGER Full Time Permanent Position Duties & Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Health Manager the Headstart/Daycare Supervisor is to carry out the following duties: • Follow and understand licensing guidelines and program policies & procedures • Supervise an activity program based on Xwisten (Bridge River) Head Start/Day Care that includes Aboriginal Headstart on Reserve, and Ministry of Children and Development Muti-Age Programing (Licensed), Land Based First Nation Programing. The Manager will create a welcoming work atmosphere, social interaction, a safe physical environment, an intellectual age-appropriate learning centers, stimulating creative activities, emotional growth for school readiness, and the Early Childhood Code of Ethics. Ensure confidentiality guidelines are followed as per the Bridge River Band Confidentiality Agreement.

• Ensure all six components of the Aboriginal Head Start Program are established and implemented in accordance with the Principles and Guidelines of the Aboriginal Head Start Program: Current cultural and language practice, Education, Health promotion, Nutrition, Social support for parent/guardians and children.

• Must not bind the Program into any formal agreement.

• Must conform to Program Policies & Procedures.

• Must be a positive role model at all times.

• Must ensure their professional code of ethics is followed at all times.

• Ensure all funding and invoices are received in a timely matter from the Province of BC and parents.

7. Guide staff to assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toileting.

8. The center must keep a “Daily Log of activities, visitors must sign in and out, citing and describing in detail all incidents of concern (e.g.: injuries to children, any questions or concerns).

9. Ensure positive working relationships and smooth operations of the Center and ensure community and family are informed through monthly newsletter and reports.

10. Ensure the following are carried out by the staff: a. Lead and facilitate children in daily activities which are age appropriate, safe, and healthy. b. Make use of community resources relating to health, safety and general educational development. c. knowledge and understating of Ages and Stages Questionnaire as a guide and program delivery tool. d. Co-ordinate activities with other staff, parents/guardians and community when appropriate. e. Ensure indoor and outdoor program areas are safe at all times. f. Attend meetings and workshops to develop and discuss new teaching methods. g. Attend staff meetings to discuss children’s progress and future programming based on the observations. h. Assist in cleaning (disinfecting) classroom at the end of the day, this includes putting away all outside equipment. i. Must be prepared to review child’s development.

11. Apply Flexibility and Adaptability as needed to address a child’s needs.

12. Establish a positive rapport with all conveying respect.

Professional Development: 1. Participate in seminars, workshops, and training programs pertinent to position to upgrade skills and knowledge.
