Why Merrimack College?

Designed to help you meet the needs of today’s youth, the program offers several options for you, depending on your career goals:

• Master of Education in School Counseling: In this 48-credit degree program option, you will complete 44 hours of advanced coursework in counseling and youth program implementation. The remaining four credits of the program are saved for field experiences, including three pre-practicums and a full-year, single-school placement practicum (575 total hours) that exceeds Massachusetts requirements in hours. The lower credit amount for the practicum reduces tuition costs. The option for School Adjustment/Social Worker includes 56 course credits and f900 hours of field work.

• Master’s PLUS program in School Counseling: This option allows you to earn an additional 12–16 credits beyond the master’s. It is a comprehensive 60- to 62-credit program of study in school counseling that enables you to prepare for a second licensure or advance your skills in a specialty area, such as trauma, substance use, special education, juvenile justice, higher education, or community engagement.

• License only: If you already hold a master’s degree in counseling, social work, or psychology, Merrimack offers a customized program to assist you with meeting licensure requirements for school counseling or school adjustment/social work in Massachusetts.
