Our public library, partially housed in a beautiful, historic building, is a Carnegie Award winner and has all the amenities of a much larger city library. Quality health care is accessible in the city, with a hospital, medical clinics, several specialty care providers and outstanding assisted care facilities.
In addition, we have many active community and civic groups, such as Rotary and gardening clubs. Merrill’s rich history is evident in its well-preserved architecture and historic sites. The Merrill Historical Society offers a glimpse into the city’s past with exhibits and educational programs.

Historical Sites How it all began
Merrill Post Office
This historic Merrill Post Office at 430 E. Second St. is the second oldest post office in Wisconsin, placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built by the U.S. Post Office Department (now known as the U.S. Postal Service), this was the first federally owned post office in Merrill. The cornerstone reads, “William C. McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasurer, James A. Wetmore, Acting Supervising Architect, 1915.”
The post office opened April 17, 1917, and an open house was held to show off the new building to the public. The new building, with steam heat and electric lights, had cost $55,000, with an additional $2,500 for furnishings and $4,400 for the land. The architecture is what is sometimes called federal style, with classical and Georgian details. Its brick exterior is trimmed with limestone and granite. The building is symmetrical, with windows in identical places from side to side.
Prior to the construction of the current building, the post office in Merrill was housed in six different locations, either in rented spaces or buildings owned by the postmaster. The first post office at Jenny (the town later renamed as Merrill in 1881) opened in 1859 in the Jenny Hotel, owned by the first postmaster, Cyrus Strowbridge. In the 1890s, Merrill Postmaster C.N. Johnson came up with the idea to number rural mailboxes for more efficient delivery. His innovation was accepted by the national office and implemented across the country. By 1924, the Merrill Post Office had a chief and assistant postmaster, seven cashiers, four clerks and eight routes that covered 25 miles. The Merrill Post Office has been updated to be handicapped accessible. The lobby still features its original design, with tile floor and marble wainscot gracing the interior. The lobby area open to the public during business hours.
TB Scott Library*
Named after Thomas Blythe Scott, the city’s first mayor and one of its founders, the T.B. Scott Free Library was built in 1911. This historic building has undergone many changes over the years, with the largest expansion and renovation completed in 2001.
In June 2017, the library officially flipped the switch on solar power. On the building addition, a new roof was installed with 79 solar collectors on the south and southwest sides to provide about 15 percent of the library’s annual electricity usage.
The library is a strong advocate for accessibility to all and in 2021, the library became Fine Free, no longer charging patrons for overdue books.
The library was recognized and certified in 2023 by the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Wisconsin as a “Dementia-Friendly Library” after staff went through extensive training. The library has received numerous recognitions, including two “Wisconsin Library of the Year” awards, and is listed in the National Historic Register.
A wide variety of programs for all ages are offered year-round by the library. The library is home to an extensive collection of genealogy materials and local history. The addition of the “Library of Things” collection has offered community members access to materials and items beyond books.
The library is more than just a place for individuals to check out books, it is a community center set on the banks of the Prairie River where one can sit and enjoy the view while reading a book, magazine or newspaper. Even when the doors are closed for the day, the library continues to serve the community with its free Wi-Fi service. The library is open to the public during normal operating hours, which can be found at www.tbscottlibrary.org.
Lincoln County Courthouse*
Standing at the corner of East Main Street and Center Avenue in Merrill, the Lincoln County Courthouse is notable for its distinctive architecture and has served as a central part of the community since its completion.
Ground was broken for Lincoln County’s new courthouse May 4, 1901. Formal dedication of the building was held Sept. 23, 1903. The cost was approximately $100,000. The building is a Beaux-arts style structure measuring 98 x 125 feet. One million bricks were used in the construction of the building. The total height, including the clock tower and flagpole is 192 feet. The diameter of the clock dial is nine feet, while the ball at the top of the flagpole is two feet in diameter. Inside, the rotunda, 32 feet in diameter, has been restored. Inside, intricate terrazzo floors and ornate murals add to the building’s character.
Over the years, the building has undergone renovations to modernize its facilities while preserving its historical integrity. These upgrades ensured the courthouse could continue to serve the community effectively. Today, the courthouse is not only a functioning government building but also a point of interest for those exploring the architectural heritage of Merrill. In recognition of its significance, the courthouse is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places.
Sawmill Brewing Company*
Sawmill Brewing Company sits on a beautiful 3-acre wooded lot right in the middle of town. The brewery and taproom feature 16 in-house crafted beers made right on site by Head Brewer, Ben Osness. There is also wine, craft soda and seasonal mixed drinks offered. The taproom gets many food trucks to visit during the warmer months and offers frozen pizzas, charcuterie boards and other bar snacks as well.
The red-granite building was built in 1940-41 toward the end of the Great Depression. One of FDR's government work programs was assigned the job of building a DNR Ranger Station in Merrill. In 2015 the old DNR Ranger Station was turned into a taproom. The exterior remained basically untouched as the interior was drastically changed using existing material and other reclaimed and repurposed materials from the Merrill area. The taproom opened in March of 2016.
There is always something to do at Sawmill Brewing Company including weekly Trivia on Wednesday, Open Mic on Thursday, and Live Music on the weekends. All upcoming events can be seen on Facebook or Instagram. Stop by and have a pint while taking in some of Merrill's history. Cheers!
3 Arch Bridge (Background photo)
Among the historic landmarks in Merrill is one you can drive over. Located on Highway 64 spanning the Prairie River, the Three Arch Stone Bridge was built in 1904. The bridge, a National Historic Landmark, is 130 feet long and 54 feet wide. Each arch displays a decorative pattern of alternating, single and double ring stones with tapered keystones about 30 inches in height. It is the only remaining three-arch stone bridge in Wisconsin.
The bridge was designed by Merrill engineer Francis Mathews and built by Merrill mason Fred Hesterman to replace a failing wooden bridge across the river. According to historical accounts, Hesterman was paid $9,200 for his services. Granite used in the construction of the bridge is believed to have come from quarries north of the city.
The bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. A plaque was erected in 2001 to note the bridge’s historic significance. The inscription quotes an August 1904 article in the Merrill Advocate, that proudly noted: “The work (is) beautiful in symmetry and grace, a delight to every citizen of Merrill.”
Restoration of the bridge was undertaken in 2001 through a state grant.
Old City Hall
The City of Merrill spent $16,275 in the fall of 1888 to start construction on a City Hall building located between First and Second streets. Construction of the Richardsonian Romanesque style building was completed in April 1889.
The building features local brick, sandstone and virgin timber, with distinctive round turrets, bay windows and horseshoe arches. The clocktower is five stories high. Over the east doorway, an iron balcony provided a podium for speeches and announcements by city officials and even a local celebrity, radio broadcaster Hans Von Kaltenborn, who grew up a block from City Hall.
When Merrill’s first mayor, T.B. Scott, died, he left $10,000 to the city for establishment of a city library. The library was housed in City Hall from 1891-1911, when it moved to its current location. Over the years, the building also housed the police department and jail, nursing services, Merrill Chamber of Commerce, World War I and II service clubs, the first language school for immigrants, senior citizens’ center and more. The Merrill City Band practiced in the city council chambers from 1915 to 1977 and held performances in the east yard of City Hall.
The city sold the building in 1978 for $312 as City Hall moved into updated quarters in the former Church Mutual Insurance Company building at 1004 E. First St., where it remains today. The old City Hall building sat for 14 years before renovations began in 1992 to turn the building into residential apartments. The building was purchased by new owners in July 2020. The current owners have launched major renovations to update the building into 16 contemporary residential units.
Merrill Historical Society*
The Merrill Historical Society has been a part of Merrill since 1978, when a small group of concerned citizens came together to save “Old City Hall,” a landmark that still dominates the downtown of Merrill.
Since that time, the Society has grown into a museum and research center that focuses on Merrill and the surrounding communities. Occupying a $2 million facility with a climate-controlled storage area for artifacts including fragile documents, photographs and newspapers, they welcome many local and out-of-state visitors every year.
Discover the fascinating history of Merrill and the surrounding communities by touring the museum exhibits. Two permanent exhibits reflect our area’s beginnings. A State Historical Society class Native American exhibit offers the history of these indigenous people through artifacts and informational posters. The Pinery offers a look at our early logging roots, the struggles to get logs and lumber to market, and the population explosion of sawmills, window and woodworking factories in 1882 on the arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad. These two permanent exhibits are enhanced by several rotating displays and exhibits.
Please visit discovermerrillhistory.org or call 715-536-5652 for more information.
The museum and research center are open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are happy to accommodate other times and days, just email or call. Discover Merrill through its past.

Fish Merrill
“The Doors To The Northwood’s Of Wisconsin”
Looking for a peaceful, memorable spot that feels a world away from crowded vacation spots? If fishing, hiking, camping, and a true escape into nature sound like your style, let me introduce you to Merrill, Wisconsin. I’m Chris Kalafice, and this place has been my family’s fishing haven for generations. For as long as I can remember, I’ve fished the Wisconsin River, from Brokaw to Tomahawk, often launching from Merrill’s Riverside Park or Council Grounds State Park. Whether you’re casting for walleye, bass, or musky, Merrill’s waters offer incredible fishing, with scenic spots like Grandfather and Grandmother Dams along Highway 107. One of my favorite ways to fish here? Wading right into the river, where each cast feels like a chance to connect with nature and chase that next big catch. Local guide Kurt Schultz, with over 25 years of experience, can help you explore these waters if you’re hoping for a trophy musky or other prize fish.
With amazing fishing spots, miles of shoreline, and memories waiting to be made, Merrill’s waters call to every angler. Reach out to the Merrill Chamber of Commerce (715-536-9474) to plan your visit, or feel free to email me at ckalafice@gmail.com with any questions about the best fishing spots and techniques. Tight lines, and see you on the river! Read the full article on our website for all the details.

For seasoned paddlers, Class III whitewater awaits at Prairie Dells when water levels rise above 350 cfs.

One of only 11 National Scenic Trails in the country, the Ice Age Trail is a 1,200-mile footpath contained entirely within the state of Wisconsin. Ancient glaciers carved the path through rocky terrain, open prairies, and peaceful forests.
The Trail traces the terminal moraine of the most recent ice age during the Wisconsin Glaciation, over 25,000 years ago. The Trail highlights glacial landscape features now considered among the world’s finest examples of how continental glacial sculpts our planet.
More than 2.3 million people use the Ice Age Trail each year to hike and snowshoe, to backpack, to disconnect and reconnect.
Trail Information
The Trail is managed by a partnership among the National Park Service, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Ice Age Trail Alliance.
The Trail is not yet complete. 700 miles are yellow-blazed Ice Age Trail segments, more than 450 miles of unmarked connecting routes link the blazed segments.
Portions of the Ice Age Trail pass through private lands. Please respect the rights and generosity of private property owners by staying on the trail.

Great Pinery Heritage Waterway

With easy-going rivers and calm lakes, Lincoln County’s paddling options suit families and beginners alike. The county’s lakes—28 with accessible boat landings—offer ample choices for peaceful paddling while enjoying the scenery and spotting local wildlife.
The Great Pinery Heritage Waterway
For a gentle river journey, the Prairie River’s 7.5-mile stretch from County C to Stange’s Park provides a calm float through lush landscapes, with easy takeouts at Lions or Stange’s Park. Adventurous paddlers can venture onto the Wisconsin River, where a small drop adds excitement. For those with more experience, the whitewater at Prairie Dells offers thrilling Class III rapids when water levels are high.
The Wisconsin River, now part of the Great Pinery Heritage Waterway, is a must for longer excursions. Starting near Rhinelander, the river winds past Lake Alice, Lake Mohawksin, and scenic inlets, with local landings providing easy access and amenities. The Grandfather Falls Flowage near New Wood County Park features beautiful sights, especially stunning in the Fall. From there, a picturesque paddle takes you to Council Grounds State Park and then through the Merrill area, where you can explore the river’s final stretch. With natural beauty around every bend, paddling in Lincoln County is an unforgettable experience. Visit Great Pinery Heritage Waterway for trail maps and more information.
