Evan designed this life-size canvas as a fun community activity for Merriam’s 75th birthday celebration last October. He incorporated points of interest throughout the city for residents and guests to color it in and bring the line drawing to life. Once complete, the canvas will be on display at City Hall.

JOHNSON COUNTY CHRISTMAS BUREAU: NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS For more than 65 years, the Johnson County Christmas Bureau has provided warmth and dignity to neighbors in need. Our mission is to bring winter holiday assistance to Johnson County residents living at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. We treat every client with respect by fostering the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors. In 2024, thanks to the generosity of this community, we served more than 13,000 neighbors, including over 7,000 children and 1,100 seniors.

Our most recognized program is the Holiday Shop, a nineday event each December where qualified clients “shop” at no cost in a festive, store-like setting. Families choose food, coats, clothing, toys, books, household and personal care items, and more. What makes the shop so special is the dignity and joy it brings. Thousands of volunteers— individuals, families, businesses, faith groups, and service organizations—join us each year, often telling me it’s one of the most rewarding experiences of their holiday season.

Partnerships make our work possible.

Businesses, civic leaders, faith communities, and cities, including so many here in Merriam, provide the resources, volunteers, and connections we need to serve. Merriam Christian Church has been one of our most

steadfast supporters, housing our office in the historic Campbell House and offering space for events like Christmas in July, where families enjoy food, activities, and free resources thanks to local volunteers.

Merriam truly embodies the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors.

With just one full-time and one part-time staff member, we rely heavily on community support. Merriam residents and businesses can get involved by volunteering at the Holiday Shop, hosting drives for coats, toys, or household items, donating funds, or sharing professional skills like IT, logistics, or marketing. Every effort makes a difference.

As I look to the future, my vision is that no Johnson County family in need will ever be turned away. Sadly, last year we had to close registrations early to ensure quality items for those already enrolled.

With more than 46,000 county residents living at or below 150% of the federal poverty level, the need is great—but together we can grow our reach and resources to meet it. My hope is that every family who turns to us will not only find essentials but also experience the joy and dignity that come from knowing their community cares.

IF THESE

ARTIFACTS COULD TALK Imagine walking through Merriam’s past and stumbling upon a piece of a trolley track, a schoolhouse bell, or even a weathered railroad spike. What stories would those pieces tell if they could talk? Let’s take a closer look at the artifacts that hold bits of Merriam’s history—items may seem ordinary at first glance, but carry the memories of the people and places that helped shape our community.

Handwritten Letter Sent from a sailor aboard the U.S.S. Seattle to Miss Marie Campbell of Merriam, this letter traveled from New York on November 23, 1917, with a three-cent stamp. Inside, the writer described his journey at sea during World War I, noting, “I was certainly seasick for two days just after we started.

We were twenty-three days without seeing land.” Personal letters like this provide an intimate glimpse into the experiences of service members abroad and the connections they maintained with loved ones back home.

Time Capsule Located inside the original cornerstone of the Merriam Grade School was a time capsule containing signatures of students and residents attending the school’s dedication ceremony on June 27, 1911.

Preserved for more than a century, it was uncovered by crews demolishing the structure in 2020. Also inside the capsule was a 1909 pamphlet titled “Laws Relating to the Common Schools of Kansas.”

Schoolhouse Bell Ringing across town, the schoolhouse bell called children to class, marking the rhythm of daily life in Merriam’s early schools. It represents the community’s commitment to education and the generations who began their learning here. This bell was made by Perrin & Gaff Manufacturing Company in Cincinnati, OH, and was donated to the city

by Mrs. Betty Nellor of Kansas City, MO in 1990.

Betty was the granddaughter of Alva Sharum, who served on the School Board of the Merriam Grade School and the first Board of the Shawnee Mission High School.

Lectern Railroad Spike This spike once anchored the rails that carried locomotives through Merriam connecting the community to trade, travel, and opportunity. Railroads played a central role in the city’s early development as a hub along key transportation routes, namely the Kansas City, Fort Scott, and Gulf line.

In July 1880, former President Ulysses S. Grant visited Kansas for the first time and delivered a dedication speech from this lectern that still holds a special place in Merriam’s history. Merriam Park— an impressive 40-acre destination located just east of the railroad tracks—operated from 1880 to 1900 and drew crowds of up to 20,000 visitors per day. During his visit, President Grant praised it as “the grandest amusement west of the Mississippi."

Did you know?

Merriam’s Waterfall Park is home to the Julius McFarlin Fields, a popular spot for local soccer matches and open play. The fields are named after Julius McFarlin, Merriam’s first Black councilmember, who was a dedicated leader and advocate for the community.

Today, these fields not only provide space for pickup games and youth practices, but also serve as a lasting tribute to McFarlin’s impact on Merriam.

CONFESSIONS OF A

MERRIAM INTERN

My journey from zoning maps to parks, photography fails, and learning what makes Merriam feel like home.

Hello! I'm Zach Markussen, the Management Intern at the City of Merriam - which is exactly what you'd expect. I'm originally from Kearney, Nebraska, where I double majored in political science and creative writing. I'm currently pursuing my Master of Public Administration Degree at KU, which landed me the opportunity of a lifetime here in Merriam... mailing letters and looking at zoning maps. Most people know Merriam by its parks, trails, and car dealerships, but I know it by light industrial zones and sales tax districts. And even though I came to Merriam as a visitor, it quickly started to feel like home - one where the neighbors wave, the flower baskets look straight out of a landscaping magazine, and a hi-vis vest is part of the dress code.

Random Jobs (Intern 101) Like all interns, my job description boils down to: "Everything we're too busy to do right now." I've spent hours matching tax receipts to businesses, taking meeting notes, and, a personal favorite, becoming the unofficial city photographer. They handed me a camera on day one and told me to capture Merriam. Never mind that I don't have photography experience.

The biggest problem? Day one was in June, a great time for photos since everything's bright and alive - but also 101 degrees outside. It's hard to look professional in a city-issued polo when I’m drenched in sweat. My favorite place to get shots was Antioch Park - gorgeous views and lots of shade.

Getting Familiar Part of my onboarding experience was getting to know every department in the city. I expected lectures about department function; instead I got elbow deep in a streetlight with Public Works, and tear gassed as part of a police training. That's when it clicked - Merriam isn't just neat and tidy, it's pretty. The hanging baskets, public art, and decorative streetlights aren't just nice touches, they truly show that someone cares. Once you see it, it's impossible to unsee it. I finally understand how everyone always knows the city limits - nowhere else looks, or feels, this nice.

Helping Out (When They Let Me) Now that I'm finally being trusted with real tasks (stuff more important than restocking the printer paper), I'm excited to do my part to make Merriam even better. There's something about this city that just works. Maybe it's the people, or the parks.

Maybe it's the fact that I get free leftovers from lunch events every other week. Either way, until someone moves me back to printer duty, I'm here to help keep Merriam Just Right.

POV: History in Merriam – The Jazzy Review Jasmine Jones // @thejazzyreview In all my years of hearing about Brown v. Board of Education, I never knew so much of it started just 20 minutes from my home!

I took a drive to visit the historic sites that played a huge role in shaping the schools we know today. I found them all using the free Otocast App, which listed each stop with a summary, address, and map—super easy to follow.

My first stop was the Madam C.J. Walker School (now Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church). I knew Madam Walker for her impact on the hair care industry, but learning about this school gave me a whole new respect for her legacy.

Originally, Black and white students attended Walker together—until a new whites-only school was built in 1947. In response, teacher Corinthian Nutter, and parents Alfonso and Mary Webb, led the “Walker School Walkout” and filed a lawsuit against the district—and won.

That victory became the spark for desegregation efforts across Kansas. Esther Brown, a white ally, helped push the case all the way to the Kansas Supreme Court, laying the foundation for Brown v. Board of Education.

Just around the corner is Brown Park, named in honor of Esther Brown. Standing there, watching kids of all backgrounds playing together, felt like a full-circle moment.

That’s exactly what she fought for.

This important piece of history isn’t just something in books, it’s right here, all around us, and woven into our neighborhoods.

Here’s how I ate my way through town from breakfast to dessert.

Breakfast at HomeGrown Kitchen

The day starts at HomeGrown Kitchen, one of my KC metro favorites. Cozy and welcoming, it’s always buzzing in the mornings. My go-to order: a Honey Bee Latte, fluffy pancakes, and a homemade Pop-Tart. If you haven’t tried one, you should!

Lunch at El Pulgarcito

Next stop: El Pulgarcito, a Salvadoran gem known for pupusas—thick corn cakes filled with cheese, beans, or meat, served with curtido and salsa. Comforting, homemade, and some of the best in the metro.

Happy Hour at 30hop

Afternoons call for 30hop, a lively spot for drinks, food, or catching a game. Happy hour runs Sunday–Friday, 3–6 p.m., with 30% off apps, beer, wine, and cocktails. The menu covers wings, bowls, tacos, and burgers—my pick is the Nashville Hot Chicken.

Sweet Treat at Betty Rae’s

Finally, dessert at Betty Rae’s Ice Cream.

With creative flavors and house-made waffle cones (the smell is irresistible), it’s the perfect way to wrap up the day.

Planting the Seeds—we love its hyper-reflective surface and its placement at the Farmers’ Market, a great spot for community engagement. It’s fun, whimsical, and reminds us of Claes Oldenburg’s large-scale pop art sculptures.

What's the inspiration behind your new installations located at the Merriam Community Center?

We drew inspiration from native Kansas plants and the landscape around the Community Center and Merriam Plaza Library.

We wanted to honor the natural world while adding 3D elements that gave Merriam residents a role in the process.

The stairs, Seasons Steps, references the changing Midwest leaves.

The elevator tower, Grow Together, reflects Merriam’s tight-knit community and aims to create a joyful, unifying experience.

What will you remember fondly about Merriam during your time in our city?

The people—kind, welcoming, and supportive.

So many residents were engaged and brought great energy. And the diverse, delicious food scene was an unexpected bonus!

Co-founded by artists Felici Asteinza and Joey Fillastre, the Milagros Collective create sitespecific murals, installations, paintings, objects, and community spaces.
