Monday/Wed/Friday - “Poker Walk”

Potluck Suppers

If you love to walk and love to play poker, we have a program for you! For each lap around the gym you will receive a card. Once you have traveled 7 laps, you will have an official hand and can then walk more laps to improve your hand. Each and every lap you will receive a card. (Max. 20 laps) If you already have seven cards, you simply discard a playing card, to make the best possible 7-card hand of the day. Weekly prizes awarded to the walker with the best hand of the week! Winner of the 2008 Kansas Recreation & Park Assn. Outstanding Program Award

Dates: Every Monday, Wednesday & Friday Time: 8:30am-10:30am (Subject to gym availability) Fee: FREE

Wednesdays - “It’s Show Time!” Join us every Wednesday afternoon to watch a recently released movie (or an oldie but goodie). Schedules are available at the community center. We provide the movie, you can provide your own popcorn. We take requests for future showings. (Movies subject to change) Dates: Every Wednesday, May-August Time: 1:00pm Fee: FREE

Monday thru Friday - “Congregate Meals”

Participate in the Johnson County Nutrition Program Neighborhood Center at the Irene B. French Community Center. This noon meal program is offered on weekdays; home delivered meals are available for anyone who is unable to come to the meal site. For information on the program, or for a reservation, please contact Site Manager at (913) 677-2048. Donation requested.

Fridays - “Merriam 50+ Club”

Meet at the Irene B. French Community Center on Fridays from 10:00am-12:00pm. Join your friends and neighbors for food, fun and a weekly program. New members are always welcome! For more information contact LaNelle Radcliffe at 913-722-1917

Senior “What’s Happening” Monthly Newsletter Every month the Merriam Parks and Recreation Department sends out a Senior Newsletter with listings of that month’s special events, programs and classes. To be placed on our mailing list, call 913-322-5550 or download at www.merriam.org/park/senior

Cook your favorite dish and share it at our potluck suppers, held on the first Wednesday of each month. “Singles” should bring one side-dish to feed six people (casserole, dessert, salad, or vegetable); “Couples” should bring two side-dishes that feed six people. Bring your own table service. Meat and drinks will be provided by the Community Center. Supper time is at 5:30pm. Bingo will be played following supper. Reservations required. Mark your calendars now for the following dates: May 4, June 1 and August 3 (No July Potluck)

Monthly Bingo! Come join the fun and win a prize by yelling “Bingo!” before anyone else. Bingo is played the second Thursday of the month. We play 15 games each time and prizes range from gift certificates at your favorite restaurant to holiday gift packs. Dates: May 12, June 9, July 14 and August 11 Time: 1:00pm-3:00pm Fee: $3.00 at the door (2 cards per person)

Blood Pressure Clinic Have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. Second Tuesday of every month, Johnson County Health Department conducts a blood pressure clinic at Irene B. French Community Center from 10:45am-11:45am. Donation requested. Dates are: May 10, June 14, July 12 and August 9

Streamway Striders Walking Club Hit the trail on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and/or Saturday mornings to enjoy strolling down the Merriam Streamway trail system. Meet at the 71st and Switzer entrance of the trail extension at 6:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings and/or 10:00am on Saturday mornings.
