WELCOME Every year I believe the summer months will be a quieter time where we as a space can rest a little. Instead I find (like almost everyone else I know) we’re still running round trying to juggle work, life and family in what seems like a wonderfully positive albeit impossibly busy season. However, I have realised with longer brighter days I seem to have more time to think, to consider and reflect. It is this that gives me the summer feeling. A feeling of renewal of thought and energy. This summer I’ve been caught up with thoughts of citizenship and how we societally instigate change. There is no action in the arts or I believe in broader society that doesn’t require collective effort. Yes, there are individual artists, elements, people, projects and presentations, but it is through the power of collaborative action that one individual’s idea can be realized. So when we are faced with uncertainty and difficult issues like Brexit,The Trump (how did he get that title) and the horrific attacks in Nice, Istanbul and Baghdad, how do we as citizens take a position? How do we take a stand and perhaps try to make a difference? What role do we play in shaping our own society? We in Mermaid believe culture precedes change. Any real societal stride that results in substantial change has been produced from a cultural shift, a collective motion that engages the public’s imagination. Something that builds an energy and movement that cannot be altered or denied. So for us how as a centre do we act as a support and catalyst for the imagination of our communities? We, in Mermaid, try to always be present and open-minded. We try to work with as many like-minded people, groups and organisations as we can. You, as our community may not always be aware of the support we give and our partnerships. Have a look overleaf and see who we are working with this season and please, don’t just come and visit Mermaid (as often as you can!) but why not get involved with these groups and help start to make a positive change in our community. Bray Alcohol Awareness Campaign is a joint project between the Bray Local Drugs & Alcohol Task Force, the Bray Drugs Awareness Forum and Crosscare. Recent Irish stats from the Health Research Board reveal more than 150,000 people in Ireland are dependant drinkers and approximately 1.3 million Irish drink to harmful levels. It is this reality that brought these groups together to run Bray Alcohol Awareness Campaign in the hopes to raise awareness and understanding of alcohol related harms at a local level. To achieve this, the campaign will involve a number of initiatives throughout 2016 that target the wider Bray community and those who may be at risk (see two events in Mermaid pages 18 and 55) Common Ground Bray are a food and skills community run by volunteers, providing community space for workshops, events, wholefood buying club, organic market, film club, community garden, nature club, a gift circle and many other things, all around sustainable, environmental, and ecological themes.With over 100 members, Common Ground Bray is a vibrant, active hub for the people of South Dublin and Wicklow, a place to connect with likeminded folk. Mermaid and Common Ground want to establish a TIMEBANK.We both believe in active citizenship and in community empowerment and we want to bring back a sense of support, togetherness and participation in our community & locality. We will launch the initiative on Culture Night –drop by on 16th September to see how you can get involved! (see page 20) Edible Bray (and Seed to Seed) is an initiative started by members of Common Ground Bray.They are creating a trail of edible public planting around the town: fruit, herbs, vegetables and flowers to feed body and soul, birds and bees - an edible urban Eden! They began by creating a community garden at Bray Recycling Centre, turning a neglected piece of ground into a food garden. Since then they’ve planted heritage Irish apples in all the schools in Bray, and expanded their edible planting to include the Albert Walk beside Bray Dart Station, as well as outside Mermaid Arts Centre (see picture as Stephanie our Box Office Co-ordinator helps planting). All of their work is voluntary and they welcome anyone who is interested, you can contact them at ediblebray@gmail.com, or look them up on Facebook. They’re also looking for suggestions for sites around the town, so if you know of any, please get in touch! 4

MERMAID SPACE Mermaid SPACE is our residency programme which helps us ensure we’re not just a centre of presentation but a place for creation. It confirms our commitment to supporting the work of artists to research, make and produce new works. We are a space for artists and audiences. This Autumn we are very pleased to announce returning initiatives and new artists and projects; Gap Day an initiative led by Lian Bell with Mermaid (funded through the Arts Council Theatre Development Programme) offers freelance theatre artists creative days where their dreaming, thinking and planning time is valued. This year through an open submission, an exciting crop of 15 independent theatre-makers, directors, devisers, writers, designers, etc. across Ireland (8 counties) were given the opportunity to spend a number of days of creative development with access to a room in a local creative space and a small bursary for their time. We are now able to expand this programme and are delighted to say we plan another open call for applications in November 2016 for artists to work in January / February 2017. Keep your eyes peeled on social media and our e-zine (sign up to our database now so as not to miss it) We are also thrilled to have received a third years funding (through the Arts Council’s Artist in Residence Scheme) for our three dance artists in residence; Karen Gleeson, Nick Bryson and Aisling O’Coineen. These three exciting and talented artists will present new works in an evening on September 8th (see page 17) called Smoke and Mirrors and have invited international guest dance artist Hilde Elbers 5

to perform with them. Aisling, Karen and Nick are, as I type, hatching expansive plans for a series of innovative performances, talks, workshops and off site activities which will be rolled out throughout our 2017 programme. Mermaid is knee knockingly thrilled to welcome back Gary Keegan and Feidlim Cannon of Brokentalkers. We will premier their new work,The Circus Animals’ Desertion based on Yeats’s poem (see page 24) It is a poetic response to the imagining of a nation in which the artists will juxtapose the romantic notions of nationhood against the realities of extreme nationalism. It will take the form of a collective dream, it will be abstract, contradictory, beautiful and devastating. Mermaid has co-produced this piece in partnership with the artists themselves and Project Arts Centre. This partnership is important to us, as duality of support is the only way we as spaces can try to offer sustainable support to artists for the creation and presentation of their work, both of these issues are at the core of our and Project Arts Centre’s mission. The Circus Animals’ Desertion will move from Bray into Dublin to be presented as part of Dublin Theatre Festival 2016 where it will no doubt sell out – so book your tickets here first! We have also continued our work with Kate Heffernan (and Director Gary Keegan with Mentor Tim Crouch) on the development of Kate’s new theatre piece COUNTRY. The piece is about a hotel called The Montague where Kate’s parents had their wedding reception and which was in its day connected to the IRA abduction of Tiede Herrema, a popular spot on the Country and Irish touring circuit and is now a Direct Provision Centre. Kate and Gary have done three development weeks over the summer working on the script (originally co-commissioned by Mermaid and Laois County Council) and in November they, with a team of actors and designers, will have a two week development and showing. Details will be announced by the end of September. Finally, we are supporting painter Mary Duffy in the development of a new body of work that is tentatively entitled ‘This Half Way World’. A recent recipient of an Arts + Disability Connect Bursary, Mary will use the award to transition from being an artist who primarily works outdoors, to one who is also at ease in the studio. Over the coming months she will be engaging with her mentor, Donald Teskey, (RHA), as she negotiates this move to what she says is likely to be less figurative work.With Dublin City Council and Mermaid as partners, we aim to have her come talk in Mermaid (in 2017). This would be a great opportunity for all of us to get a chance to find out more about her plans and practice.

MERMAID GALLERY HELEN G. BLAKE Helen G Blake is a Wicklow painter whose practice focuses on colour, engaging with rhythm and formalism, chance and deliberation. Using a working method where process and contemplation guide the evolution of the work, her small, overtly hand-made paintings record and examine colour conversations within accumulating pattern structures, embracing accidents, flaws and discrepancies within their rhythms. Andrew Wilson, Curator of Modern and Contemporary British Art at Tate Britain, has written of Blake’s work that is underpinned by process - “always variously methodical and rational, yet also absurd and affected by the interruption of chance. In Blake’s paintings, colour is deployed to follow a given order and yet these are paintings of nature ... not the rigid order of an urban modernism, but the texture and rhythms, and immediacy of life unfolding.” Mermaid Arts Centre is delighted to present this body of work which also includes a new suite of paintings initiated during a 6 week residency at The Model, Sligo.

MERMAID GALLERY Remembered

John Cleary, a Bray man in the Great War One hundred years on, all of us are connected in some way to the First World War, whether through family history or because of its long term impact on the world we live in. From 2014 to 2018, across the world, countries and communities will come together to commemorate and remember the importance of those who fought and died. This year, during YARN Storytelling Festival, Mermaid will exhibit photos, letters and maps through which we will tell the story of a local man’s search to uncover part of his family history, and the story of the last journey of his great uncle John Cleary, one of the 9th Dublin Fusiliers who was killed in France in 1916. ‘A few years ago I learned that one of the names on the War Memorial near the train station in Bray was that of my grandfather’s uncle, John Cleary.When I began to look for more information, I discovered his story was also that of other men from the Wicklow area. Although we don’t even have a photo of him, with the help of modern technologies and the recent digitisation of many records it is possible, a hundred years later, to follow in the steps of John and his colleagues and to walk the fields of northern France in which they fought, and where so many of them still remain.’ – Seán Downes The exhibition will also include materials gathered by Bray Cualann Historical Society about Wicklow men in the First World War.

MERMAID GALLERY BLACK CHURCH PRINT STUDIO “Creativity takes courage. ” – Henri Matisse Black Church Print Studio is an artistic collective and one of the leading contemporary fine art print studios in Ireland.With over 70 members the studio supports and promotes the development of contemporary art practice through the medium of print. They do this through the provision of excellent studio facilities, a diverse artistic programme, and by the promotion of fine art print as a leading art form. Together, Mermaid Arts Centre and Black Church Print Studio plan an exhibition from studio members which will not only demonstrate the beauty, complexity and diversity of print but which will also celebrate the work of artists whose work reflects our lives, resonates with our moods and which through colour, texture and composition unlock memories and inspire us to be courageous. An original print is an image produced from a surface on which the artist has worked, such as a stone or wood block or a copper plate. That surface is intended by the artist to be used as a stage in the creation of the artwork.Therefore the original work of art in this case is the print itself rather than the block or plate from which its printed.

DAMIEN DEMPSEY Damien Dempsey is going to be getting up close & personal on his upcoming Solo Tour this autumn, road testing new material for his next album which is due to be released in early 2017, along with all the crowd pleasers. Within his songs you’ll hear stories of addiction, depression, suicide, imperialism and oppression but one underlying message you’ll take from every song – whether it’s in the lyrics, or the music or the depth of his voice – is hope. THE CIRCUS ANIMALS' DESERTION A major new dance theatre performance from the makers of The Blue Boy and Have I No Mouth. The Circus Animals’ Desertion is a poetic response to the imagining of nations, inspired by the automatic script experiments of Georgie and William Butler Yeats in which they called upon the spirit world to assist with their creativity. In this work the artists juxtapose the romantic notions of nationhood put forth by Yeats and other early 20th Century poets and revolutionaries with the brutal realities of extreme nationalism in the light of the radicalisation, xenophobia and oppression engulfing the world today. The Circus Animals’ Desertion takes the form of a collective dream, abstract, contradictory but ultimately a true expression of human nature.Through the use of mask, a panoply of characters, creatures and objects populate the stage to create an otherworld that is at once strange and devastatingly familiar. Sampling texts and imagery from Yeats’ plays and poetry as well as archive recordings and interviews, the piece is performed by an international cast of dancers and musicians. Co-production by Brokentalkers, Mermaid Arts Centre and Project Arts Centre, this is an opportunity for Wicklow audiences to see the first performances before they perform in Dublin Theatre Festival 2016 and then on to The Everyman in Cork. Funded through an Arts Council Theatre Project Award.

Noel must raise their daughter, Frankie. Social worker, Moira Tierney, has other ideas, and is prepared to do battle for custody of the child. In order to prevail, Noel must prove that he can fill a woman’s shoes, break all the stereotypes, and become the best mother that he can be. Pygmalion by G.B. Shaw Square One present the second production in their 40th year celebrations, directed by Madeline Stringer. Our fellow countryman George Bernard Shaw wrote his best known play Pygmalion in 1916, but its characters are modern and real people. Shaw, a feminist before the word was invented, had a wonderful sense of humour and this play races along, full of jokes, petty snobbery, and put downs that would not be out of place in many modern dramas. INFO ///Film Club Information Some of the films we screen here at Mermaid have not been certified by the Irish Censorship Office. In order to screen these films we need to operate as a film club.This nominal fee has been integrated into the ticket price for all CLUB films. Everyone over 18 years is welcome to attend club films.

Mermaid has FREE underground parking for all evening and weekend shows. There is pay & display overground parking available.
