I AM A GRADUATE ARCHITECTURE STUDENT AT THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA IN WASHINGTON, D.C., STUDYING IN THE SCHOOL’S CONCENTRATION FOR CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM. THROUGHOUT MY ACADEMIC STUDIES, I HAVE BEEN ENROLLED IN NCARB’S NEW IPAL PROGRAM IN WHICH STUDENTS EARN THEIR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE AND MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE DEGREES, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY COMPLETING THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ARCHITECTURAL LICENSURE. AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY, IPAL STUDENTS GAIN VALUABLE WORK EXPERIENCE THROUGH THREE, EIGHT MONTH-LONG INTERNSHIPS ALONG A SIX YEAR PATH OF ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION. DURING THESE INTERNSHIPS, IPAL STUDENTS COMPLETE THE ARCHITECTURAL EXPERIENCE PROGRAM, FULFILLING ALL OF THE 3,740 REQUIRED HOURS OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE. STUDENTS ALSO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE EACH SECTION OF THE ARCHITECT REGISTRATION EXAMINATION AT LEAST ONCE DURING THEIR STUDIES.

CURRENTLY IN MY FIFTH YEAR OF STUDIES, I STRIVE TO PUSH MYSELF IN EVERY ASPECT OF WORK THAT I DO. I BELIEVE IN A WELL-ROUNDED EDUCATION, DEDICATING CONSIDERABLE FOCUS TO ALL OF MY COURSES, ARCHITECTURE RELATED AND OTHER. IN ADDITION TO ARCHITECTURE, I COMPLETED A MINOR IN FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE STUDIES. THIS HELPED DEEPEN MY UNDERSTANDING OF FRENCH AND EUROPEAN CULTURES AND THE WAY THEY HAVE, AND CONTINUE TO SHAPE OUR WORLD. SPECIFICALLY IN MY STUDIO CLASSES, I HAVE WORKED ON A RANGE OF PROJECT TYPES - FROM A 150,000 SQ. FT. PERFORMING ARTS HIGH SCHOOL TO A 1000 CU. FT. COTTAGE, AND FROM LARGE-SCALE URBAN MASTER PLANS TO WALL SECTION DETAILS - WITH A CONTINUED EMPHASIS ON DESIGNING TRADITIONAL AND CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM. IN ALL, I HOPE TO BUILD THE STRONGEST FOUNDATIONS POSSIBLE FOR MY FUTURE PROFESSIONAL CAREER.

AS PART OF A ONE-WEEK CHARRETTE, A PROPOSAL FOR AN APARTMENT BUILDING AND ADJACENT LIVE WORK UNITS WAS DESIGNED FOR THE SMALL TOWN OF SENOIA, GEORGIA. HISTORICAL CONCEPTS HAS BEEN DESIGNING MANY NEW STRUCTURES FOR THE TOWN OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES WHICH EXPAND UPON ITS EXISTING CHARMING ARCHITECTURE, WITH ITS BRICK EMBELLISHMENTS AND CAST-IRON DETAILING, AND IS WORKING WITH THE TOWN’S MAIN DEVELOPER TO CONTINUE DEVELOPMENT ON THE GIN PROPERTY SITE. LOTS 49-51 OF THE GIN PROPERTY WERE CHOSEN FOR MY PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT.

WITH A PRISTINE WATERFRONT SITE ON THE BEAUTIFUL LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, THE CLIENTS DESIRED A RESIDENCE THAT COULD ACCOMODATE A LARGE AMOUNT OF GUESTS. THE FIRM DESIGNED A CARRAIGE HOUSE AND MAIN HOUSE TO SUIT THEIR SIZE NEEDS. DURING MY INTERNSHIPS, I HELPED THE PROJECT TEAM CARRY THE DESIGN FROM EARLY SCHEMATICS INTO FULL CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS, AND WORKED WITH CONSULTANTS TO DELIVER THE CLIENTS THEIR DREAM HOME.

THE EVANGELICAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF BETHESDA DESIRED RENNOVATIONS TO THEIR MAIN SANCTUARY SPACE THAT WOULD BEST SHOWCASE THE SPIRIT AND CHARACTER OF THE CHURCH. DURING MY INTERNSHIPS, I WORKED ON THE PROJECT IN THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN PHASE, PREPARING ITERATIONS FOR THE NARTHEX REDESIGN, AS WELL AS THE CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION PHASE, WORKING DIRECTLY WITH THE CONTRACTOR AND CONSULTANTS TO ADDRESS EXISTING CONDITIONS CHALLANGES.

WITH THE GOAL OF EXPANDING THEIR FACILITY SPACE, THE BASILICA SCHOOL OF ST. MARY WANTED TO CONNECT THEIR TWO MAIN BUILDINGS. THE FIRM DESIGNED A CONNECTING BRIDGE TO PROVIDE A DIRECT AND SECURE LINK. IN ADDITION, A NEW LIBRARY AND ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM SPACES WERE DESIGNED AS PART OF THE BRIDGING. DURING MY INTERNSHIPS, I WORKED WITH THE DESIGN TEAM TO PROVIDE GROUNDS DETAILING AND BRIDGING DOCUMENTS.

LORD AECK SARGENT WORKED ON THE LEVEL II ALTERATION OF A FORMER TOBACCO WAREHOUSE INTO A MODERN ENGINEERING LAB SPACE FOR WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY. CLEAR AND INFORMATIVE SCHEMATIC PRESENTATIONS OF THE REUTILIZED SPACES THAT WERE CRUCIAL TO ENSURE THE CLIENT’S UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS FOR A HIGH-FUNCTIONING ENGINEERING SCHOOL WERE MET. DURING MY INTERNSHIP I HELPED CARRY THE PROJECT FROM SCHEMATIC THROUGH CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT PHASES.

OUTGROWING THE FUNCTIONAL SPACE OF THE EXISTING LAUNDRY ROOM, YET LACKING THE ABILITY TO GROW THE ROOM’S FOOTPRINT, MEANT CREATING A CUSTOM DESIGN WHICH MAXIMIZED EVERY SQUARE INCH. A NEW ELLEGANT OAK-WOOD COUNTER COVERS THE WASHER AND DRYER UNITS AND GIVES A SPACE TO FOLD LAUNDRY, WHILE CUSTOM SHELVING ABOVE AND TO THE SIDE ALLOW FOR AMPLE STORAGE WITH FLEXIBLE SHELF HEIGHT SETTINGS. CAREFUL EXISTING MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN TO ENSURE THE DESIGN UTILIZED EVERY INCH OF SPACE. THE NEW CUSTOM SHELVING CONTINUED THE SIMPLE YET SLEEK MILLWORK PROFILES VISIBLE IN THE REST OF THE HOUSE.
