Today’sworld is one of instability. Wars and conflicts between countries are frequent, bringing much suffering, loss of life, and displacement; our sense of compassion rises when we hear of these incidents. Buddhism has always emphasized harmony and peace. Only with harmony can there be stability, and only with peace can there be hope. People need compassion and wisdom in their interactions, and countries need respect and understanding when dealing with each other.
For many years, BLIA has proactively engaged in interfaith dialogue. We form friendships with sincerity, and promote peace through mutual respect. BLIA members around the world have transcended national boundaries to push initiatives in charity, education, environmentalism, and vegetarianism. We hope that we can ensure the sustainability of the Earth with a pure heart. On this path of peace, we believe that people of different races and faiths can come together with kindness. They can host events that embody true, virtue, and beauty; they can learn from each other and help each other accomplish their goals. This is not just a hope for society, but also the demonstration of the compassion and wisdom within the Dharma.
Throughout his life, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has advocated for world peace. This can be seen in how he incorporates peace into the Three Acts of Goodness, Four Givings, and Five Harmonies. The last of the Five Harmonies is world peace. That is, one starts from tempering themselves, then moves on to showing respect to others, maintaining happiness within the family, creating harmony in society, and finally accomplishing peace in the world. This path of peace leads from the internal to the external, and from the minor to the main. It is a path that human beings share responsibility towards.
BLIA members, peace is not an empty word, and harmony is not a slogan. They need to be achieved by taking action ourselves. If we can practice compassion and broadly form affinities in daily life, we will have contributed towards world peace. Every year, BLIA hosts the Chan and Pure Land Light-Offering Dharma Service, where millions around the world work together to illuminate the light in our hearts. This light not only symbolizes radiance and peace, but also represents the legacy of compassion and wisdom. We hope that this radiance will spread across the world; we hope that everyone can illuminate their own light, reveal the path ahead, and stride towards world peace. I wish for the Buddha’s light to shine universally, for everyone to be protected by the Triple Gem, for the world to be free of calamities and disasters, and for the world to always be peaceful.
The Intergenerational Legacy of Humanistic Buddhism
BLIA members, auspicious blessings!
One’s life cannot be without faith. Faith gives refuge and direction in life; faith is a bright lamp that illuminates the path in life. Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun reminded us that faith cannot be blind or heretical; it should be bright, proper, and with morals and wisdom. For BLIA members, Buddhism is our faith. Not only does it inherit the spirit of the Buddha’s compassion and wisdom, it is also a clear stream that purifies human minds and brings stability to society
Over the 2,600 years since Buddhism spread eastward from India, it has taken on different characteristics according to region and culture. However, the essence of the Dharma has not changed. Humanistic Buddhism is the most applicable form of the Dharma in modern times. It nourishes and elevates us spiritually. It lets us actualize compassion, virtue, purity, and harmony in daily life. With faith as our foundation, the Dharma can abide in this world constantly, and the light Humanistic Buddhism can shine across the world for generations to come. Since Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun established BLIA many years ago, BLIA members have followed in the Venerable Master’s footsteps and served society faithfully. They have protected the earth through wholesome and faithful deeds in advocating for environmentalism by planting trees, cleaning up beaches, and promoting vegetarianism and VegRun. As early as 2010, Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun promoted the vision of “Environmental and Spiritual Preservation,” and BLIA members are still acting in accordance with it today.
The Venerable Master advocated for equality throughout his life, whether it is between monastics and laity, or between people of different genders. This is in accordance with the Buddha’s spirit of “all sentient beings being equal.” Through the Lay Dharma Lecturer and Humanistic Buddhism Lecturer systems, countless BLIA members have shared the wisdom of the Dharma with others in campuses and communities. BLIA has also consistently participated in the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women to share the visions of equality and respect, allowing BLIA members’ actions to be in accordance with the needs of the present time. Irrespective of national borders, BLIA members bring warmth to the world with compassion and action. Examples include Buddhism examination; reading groups; Buddha bathing prayer services; blood drives; charitable donations; and emergency relief for disasters such as pandemics, earthquakes, and floods. This brings value to BLIA as an organization, and is a demonstration of how much Humanistic Buddhism can do in the world.
BLIA members, although Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun has passed away, his spirit and vow live on in our shared faith and mission. Let us continue to practice the Three Acts of Goodness, Four Givings, and Five Harmonies in life. Let us bring the Dharma outside of sutras and into society, bringing well-being and purpose to life. In the future, we must act in accordance with “Faith and Legacy”; we must pass on Humanistic Buddhism for generations to come, and bring happiness to the human world. I hope that BLIA members around the world can push forward together to propagate the Dharma, promote social harmony, and advance world peace. Let us create a Humanistic Pure Land filled with joy and harmony. Thank you everyone!
Coexistence and Coprosperity— A Pure Lotus in a Turbulent World
In recent years, the world has been full of instability. Continuous warfare, climate change, new tariffs, wealth inequality, and social strife has bred unease within countless people. In the face of this reality, BLIA has continued to stay true to Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s spirit of Humanistic Buddhism and promoted the vision of “Coexistence and Coprosperity.” We strive to spread the seeds of peace, understanding, and compassion around the world.
Looking back at the past two years, regional fellowship meetings and BLIA chapters’ development camps have taught us about coexistence. We understand that in this world of dependent origination, all things and all life rely on each other. We should not just worry about ourselves, but rather support each other. By letting go of prejudices and conflicts, we actualize coprosperity. We embrace differences with understanding and respect. BLIA chapters around the world have taken action to protect life and practice environmentalism, such as hosting VegRun events, planting trees for reforestation and maintaining biodiversity, and collecting vegetarianism pledges that have totaled over 500 million days. It can be said that BLIA members around the world have united by virtue of their shared faith, irrespective of race, culture, and language.
For the past two years, even though BLIA members are located in different areas of the world, they still take action towards the challenges of the current times. In terms of disaster relief, during the Myanmar Earthquake, BLIA Malaysia Federation sent a rescue team to heavily-affected areas. It also engaged in reconstruction efforts on behalf of BLIA; 108 assembled houses are set to be built to provide a new shelter for local monastics and displaced residents. BLIA members always bring warmth to the isolated, and spread peace amid conflicts. It is precisely with the strength of myriad affinities that BLIA can march with determination amid all the unrest.
In accordance with the guidance of Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the encouragement of President Most Venerable Hsin Bau, and the leadership of Acting President Ven. Tzu Jung, I wish that all BLIA members can continue to practice the bodhisattva path of Mahayana Buddhism. With a compassionate mind, wisdom-filled eyes, and determined practice, let us promise to bring coexistence to the Earth, and wish for coprosperity among human beings. Let us join hands to convert faith into strength, and love into actions. In these turbulent times, let us demonstrate BLIA’s spirit of “compassion as the ship, and wisdom as the sail,” and continue to bring light and hope to the world.

Buddha’s Birthday Celebrations Worldwide
The Buddha's Birthday is also known as the Buddha Bathing Festival. According to the sutras, 2,600 years ago, Queen Maya of Kapilavastu, India gave birth to Prince Siddhartha on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. At that time, the Four Heavenly Kings and nine nagas bathed the prince with a fragrant spring. Thereafter, Buddhists celebrated the birth of their great teacher by conducting a bathing ceremony on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month every year. The purpose of bathing the Buddha is to cleanse our body and mind; the act of bathing the Buddha brings our mind greater compassion and purity. Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun explained that the Buddha is an Enlightened One with compassion and wisdom. Like a loving mother to all sentient beings, he serves all sentient beings selflessly, blessing all with auspiciousness and well-being. Therefore, the true intent behind bathing the Buddha is to purify our body and mind through the sacred virtues of the Buddha. As we bathe ourselves in the light of the Buddha’s compassion, our lives can be constantly renewed. The Buddha's Birthday is an important festival for Buddhists. To celebrate this special day, BLIA members hold events such as the Cloud and Water Buddha bathing, float parades, prayer services, Buddha's birthday cultural exhibitions, and vegetarian fairs. With the joint efforts of BLIA members worldwide, the Buddha's Birthday Festival has gradually gained recognition by local communities and governments. With the government’s support and the public’s enthusiastic response, the Buddha's Birthday Festival has become an important local celebration and a positive influence in the community, bringing harmony and goodness to society.

VegRun Global Veg-Revival Community Run
To support the “Everyone for Veg-revival” initiative, BLIA and the Pure Green Foundation organized the Veg-revival Virtual Community Run (VegRun) during the pandemic. To maintain the cycle of goodwill, for every kilometer run, BLIA would donate 10 NTD towards a vegetarian meal for the needy; for every 10 kilometers run, BLIA would donate a full vegetarian meal. The donations are also a way to support vegetarianism, which slows global warming and contributes to environmental preservation. The first VegRun was hosted by BLIA Chunghua on November 25, 2021 to coincide with the World Vegetarian Day. While enjoying the run as a form of recreation, BLIA members and executives will be more conscious of climate change and environmental preservation.
The first full VegRun began on April 22, 2022 in Southeast Asia, and sequentially reached North America, Europe, Oceania, and Africa, before ending in Asia on May 16, 2023. The event received widespread recognition and support from the community; in particular, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent a letter in recognition of the event’s purpose. Promoting Vegetarianism Through Vege Plan A
Underthe leadership of BLIA Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun, BLIA members worldwide have been actualizing “Environmental and Spiritual Preservation” through various means to protect the Earth, such as treeplanting, afforestation, energy conservation, spiritual preservation lectures, and environmentalism forums. In particular, the Vege Plan A pledge is part of a larger movement to achieve carbon footprint reduction through vegetarianism. The “A” stands for “Ace,” meaning that Vege Plan A is the best strategy to slow down global warming and solve the ongoing food crisis. It also takes a secondary meaning of “Action,” which includes five actions of environmentalism—achieving zero hunger, halting global warming, balancing the ecosystem, protecting the environment, and preserving lives. These are all concreting actions towards saving our food supply, the lives of sentient beings, the environment, the ecosystem, and the Earth.
According to statistics, when a person upholds vegetarianism for one day, they can save 1,100 gallons of water and 45 pounds of food, protect 30 square feet of forestland from deforestation, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 pounds, and save the life of at least one animal. Recognizing the importance of vegetarianism and environmentalism, BLIA members worldwide have actively promoted Vege Plan A and vegetarianism, aiming to rally one million people to save the Earth, slow down the greenhouse effect, and create a beautiful human world through vegetarianism. From 2021 to August 31, 2025, Vege Plan A has been promoted in 149 countries and regions, received 523,211 pledges, increased the number of days when vegetarianism is upheld by 527,680,967, and reduced carbon emissions by 1,519,721.1 tons. The state of the environment directly influences the conditions for survival; therefore, “to resolve to save the Earth is to save human beings as well.” He gave praise for the proactive steps BLIA members have taken in support of environmentalism. Secretary General Ven. Chieh Pei stated that BLIA acts from the perspective of showing concern for society, the world, and humanity. Remembering BLIA Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun
OnSeptember 13, 2025, the Anniversary of the Birthday of Fo Guang Shan Founding Master Venerable Master Hsing Yun and Sangha Day Celebration was held at the Ancestral Shrine. Led by World Headquarters President Most Venerable Hsin Bau, more than 3,000 BLIA members and devotees chanted the Heart Sutra and the Fo Guang Praise in memory of the Venerable Master. The sound of local and overseas monastics, and devotees chanting in unison made for a solemn and touching service. At the end of the service, attendees proceeded to the Cloud Dwelling Building Dining Hall for Sangha Day Celebration. With sincerity and respect, attendees chanted the Offering Mantra, offered delicacies to monastics from the five continents, and paid homage to the kindness of BLIA Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
At the event, a video recording of BLIA Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Dharma talk was played. The Venerable Master shared that during the Buddha’s time, the Buddha instructed his disciples to conduct an Ullambana Dharma service in the seventh lunar month, where they would offer food to the Buddha and monastics as a means of repaying the kindness of their parents. The offerings also serve as seeds in their field of merit, which will turn into an immeasurably bountiful harvest in the future. Buddhism has an ascetic side, which helps practitioners cultivate their resolve to attain the Way. It also has a joyful side, which helps practitioners fill the human world with Chan joy and bliss. If we look at the world with a positive outlook, we can see that there is joy everywhere, and it is because of impermanence that there are opportunities for change. The time, labor, and resources

dedicated towards the Sangha Offering will manifest as countless seeds in the field of merit, and these virtuous and beautiful conditions will persist into the future.
In his Dharma talk, President Most Venerable Hsin Bau shared that the seventh lunar month is also called the Month of Filial Piety and the Month of Repaying Kindness. In this month, we “have gratitude for the four kindnesses, and follow the Dharma to cross over the three lower realms of existence.” We are interconnected with other sentient beings, and thus must have a mind of giving back and gratitude. The Buddha said that a resolve towards swiftly attaining buddhahood is the best way to give back, and the Venerable Master also teaches us to think that “we are buddhas.” In the Sangha Offering, not only are there the Six Offerings and Ten Offerings, but there is also the offering of the Dharma. The Dharma is like ambrosia that can bring all away from the great sea of transmigration; one’s own cultivation can be considered such an offering. Making offerings to the Triple Gem leads us to be replete with merit, and applying this to our cultivation increases our wisdom as well. In addition to Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Sangha Day Celebrations were also held in the United States, Brazil, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand. In accordance with Buddhist traditions, making offering to the Sangha is seen as a way to repay the kindness of our parents, as well as cultivating our merit and wisdom.

After formulating a rescue plan, they headed to the most heavily-affected monasteries the next morning to distribute supplies. Places they visited included Shwe Yay Saung Monastery, Myavati, Chan Mya Tsai Monastery, and Maha Gandaryone Monastery. Charitable Relief for Natural and Manmade Disasters
Global
warming and climate change have increased the frequency of natural disasters and caused unrest around the world. Areas have been destroyed by earthquakes, submerged by floods, ravaged by wildfires, and swept by typhoons, bringing challenges to the survival of human beings. One’s home may be reduced to ruins in a flash, one’s life and property may be threatened in an instant. Amid this sense of fear and helplessness, the spirit of mutual assistance and compassion becomes all the more important. In accordance with Founding President Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s Humanistic Buddhist spirit of “saving others with loving-kindness and compassion,” BLIA has always provided immediate aid in the wake of sudden disasters. This aid can come in the form of food, medical supplies, and daily necessities, or in the form of reconstruction assistance. Regardless, BLIA members’ ability to help victims through the most difficult times stems from their gentle yet steadfast hearts. During the Nepal mudslide, Andra Pradesh and Hyderabad floods in India, Guantan and southern Malaysia floods, eastern Malaysia fires, and the North Carolina hurricanes, BLIA members can be seen throughout affected areas providing material assistance and spiritual comfort. To BLIA members, compassion is not a slogan, but something to be actualized as a bodhisattva in the human world.

WhenBLIA Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun established the World Headquarters in Los Angeles on May 16, 1992, he wrote its guiding principle: “Advocate the practice of Buddhism in daily life to establish a Buddha’s light pure land; actualize the teachings in the world by providing relief for society with compassion.” It is hoped that BLIA not only plays the role of establishing a Buddha’s Light Pure Land, but also has the spirit of unconditional loving-kindness and universal compassion. When sentient beings face hardships, BLIA can provide relief to bring them light and hope. BLIA proactively supports blood donations by regularly hosting “Repaying Kindness Blood Drives,” helping medical organizations through blood supply shortages and conveying the spirit of “selfless compassion.” BLIA donated blood will bring life and hope to more people in need. Cultivating for the Future Through Educational Outreach
Implementing Three Acts of Goodness Schools across the Philippines
In 1998, BLIA Founding President Venerable Master Hsing Yun proposed the Three Acts of Goodness movement—to do good deeds, speak good words and think good thoughts. By purifying our actions, words, and thoughts, we cultivate our wisdom and compassion, and in turn change society for the better. The Three Acts of Goodness transcends religion; it is a means for people to reflect on themselves, show concern to society, and turn wholesome thoughts into actions. Since 2010, Fo Guang Shan Philippines has actively promoted the Three Acts of Goodness, hosting nearly 100 events involving singing, calligraphy, running, storytelling, and basketball, with a cumulative attendance count of over 25,000.
In 2011, to integrate the Three Acts of Goodness into education, the Three Acts of Goodness Education Fund began hosting the Three Acts of Goodness Schools selection initiative. The initiative encourages schools to actualize the Three Acts of Goodness in classes and events, in order to cultivate students’ morals and sense of responsibility. Goals of the initiative include: 1) choosing schools that highlight moral education and creativity, 2) motivating teachers to develop educational activities involving the Three Acts of Goodness, 3) leading students to engage in self-reflection, and 4) encouraging the promotion of the Three Acts of Goodness within families and communities.
In 2016, Fo Guang Shan Philippines signed a cooperation agreement with the Manila Department of Education and the Ministry of Education. Under the agreement, the Three Acts of Goodness initiative will be implemented in middle and primary schools
nationwide. Schools can apply for resources towards classroom design, student activities, faculty training, and Three Acts of Goodness community planning. Fo Guang Shan hosts teacher training camps and parent seminars every year, helping teachers and students apply the Three Acts of Goodness in daily life. Schools have made many creative implementations, including the honesty store, kindness food stop, meditation hall, reading, dramas, choirs, and planting. During the pandemic, online guidance and material support continued, showing the lasting strength of a Three Acts of Goodness education.
The Philippines is the first country outside Taiwan to promote Three Acts of Goodness Schools nationwide. Fo Guang Shan Philippines and BLIA Philippines have supported the initiative financially. From 2016, Guang Ming College, founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, began promoting the initiative; over the last decade, the number of Three Acts of Goodness schools increased from 50 to nearly 1,000, benefiting around one million students. The Ministry of Education has praised the Three Acts of Goodness movement for positively influencing students’ character, lives, and education. The movement benefits the character of teachers and students alike, and can change society for the better. Venerable Master Hsing Yun hopes that the number of Three Acts of Goodness schools can increase. Starting from schools, the movement can extend to families and society, eventually forming a Three Acts of Goodness country where everyone can “do good deeds, speak good words, and think good thoughts.”
On August 31, 2025, the Philippines Three Acts of Goodness School initiative, which began in 2016, reached an adoption count of nearly 1,000 schools. The Philippines Department of Education gave high praise to the Three Acts of Goodness movement for positively influencing students’ character, lives, and education. The movement benefits the character of teachers and students alike, and can change society for the better.

South Asia Rural Education Teacher Training
Education is the cornerstone for transforming one’s life, and the key to changing the fate of children in poverty. From November 21 to 25, BLIA World Headquarters hosted the South Asia Rural Education Teacher Training at FGS Dong Zen Temple, Malaysia. 20 teachers from Sri Lanka’s Little Star Kindergarten and India’s Buddha’s Light Hope Villages attended.
World Headquarters Vice Secretary General Southeast Asia Ven. Chueh Cheng invited Malaysia’s Three Acts of Goodness Education team to design the coursework. Physical and intellectual training were administered according to the children’s educational needs. After the opening ceremony, Dong Zen Buddhist College students took charge in the “Learning About the Buddha Movie Study Group,” English song class, and various icebreakers. BLIA executives taught instructional methods such as making beats with cups, clapping hands, the “Buddha’s Enlightenment” board game, and Zentangles. FGS Hsingma Si Three Acts of Goodness Kindergarten teachers shared class videos and how they utilized educational materials, helping teachers formulate a teaching plan.
At the training, South Asia teachers taught mock classes, applying what they learned in performances, stories, dances and games. They discussed their annual teaching plan and used Google Drive to record their daily and weekly classes, making their classes more systematic, enriching, and interesting. Other courses strengthened teachers’ understanding about Fo Guang Shan’s beliefs and Humanistic Buddhism, including “Fo Guang Shan and BLIA” taught by World Headquarters Asia Secretarial Office’s Ven. Miao Yu, and “Learning About Venerable Master Hsing Yun and Humanistic Buddhism” by South Asia Monastic Advisor Ven. Chueh Men.
Additionally, teachers visited Jenjarom Chinese Primary School and Tamil Primary School, and attended the closing ceremony for FGS Dong Zen Temple’s community classes. From the class exhibition prepared by primary school and teenage students, they experienced the diversity of a Humanistic Buddhist education and the students’ many takeaways. The closing ceremony for the training was held at the Main Shrine. Vice Secretary General Ven. Chueh Cheng encouraged teachers to continue working hard to create a better future for rural children. Moved and grateful, the teachers vowed to apply their learnings in the classroom, and transform the lives of rural students.
