Dimensional Thinking

In three dimensions, a textile becomes part of the architecture — thoughtful weaving translated into sculptural form.

THE STAIR SERIES

Stairs are inherently liminal, connecting one level to the next; hallways bridge one room to another. These thresholds may only hold a moment of your time, but those moments accumulate into lasting impressions. A well-considered stair runner turns that passage into an experience — guiding the eye, softening the acoustics, grounding the architecture, and making the journey between spaces quietly meaningful.

Our Stair Series embraces this challenge: to unite multiple planes with intention, to honor the practical demands of daily life, and to introduce beauty into the places you move through most. Each runner becomes a sculptural thread in the home — durable, functional, and thoughtfully woven into the way you live.

Durability and beauty guide every decision. Because stairs and hallways are among the most traveled pathways in a home, they demand materials and construction that can withstand daily use while still offering a sense of refinement. This is why so many of our newest weaves begin here. The weaves form the foundation of each design, allowing us to innovate at the fiber level — creating constructions that are resilient, textural, and capable of carrying nuance and artistry into highly functional spaces.

When a flat rug folds over a stair, it becomes a sculpture— its form shifting with every angle and every step. Designing a stair runner means paying attention to how the weave and yarns behave in three dimensions, how they bend at the nose of the tread, and how the pattern reveals itself as you move. We consider not only durability, but the optical flow of the piece in motion, creating a design that surrounds you and changes with you as you walk up or down.

Even more challenging than refining our craft has been building a culture that nurtures discovery, curiosity, vulnerability, and openness. It is only when we are willing to take big risks and put a large part of ourselves in our work that the real art emerges. The art that moves people and creates an emotional experience. Creating this environment has required courage, discipline, and determination from everyone at Merida Studio.

Each stair we make is built from scratch — crafted in natural materials and tailored to the architecture with a level of detail only true weaving expertise can achieve.

Every staircase is different, and our Stair Series is built on that simple truth. Rather than adapting a flat rug to fit a set of measurements, we build each stair runner from the ground up, shaping the weave to the exact rise, turn, and proportion of the each unique staircase. This approach honors the three-dimensional nature of stairs, treating them as sculptural pathways that deserve the same level of intention as any focal point in the home.

What sets our process apart is not just what we weave, but the way we weave it.

Each runner is crafted entirely from natural materials and constructed with multiple yarn types—an approach that creates depth, strength, and tactile richness that can’t be achieved through single-yarn, surface-only designs. Because we understand how motifs must bend, fold, and travel along a staircase, we customize every detail so the pattern flows seamlessly, enhancing rather than interrupting the architecture. These decisions require more planning, more hands-on expertise, and more craft, but the results speak for themselves: our runners feels integrated, intentional, and alive in three dimensions.

The value of this difference is felt every day, often in subtle but deeply meaningful ways. A well-crafted stair runner doesn’t just protect the steps; it elevates the experience of moving through the home, enriching spaces that are constantly used but often overlooked. By investing in natural fibers, layered construction, and true customization, we create stair runners that are made to last—visually, structurally, and emotionally. The result is a staircase that carries you from one place to the next with beauty, quiet confidence, and a level of craftsmanship that endures.

Our stair designs often differentiate the treads from the risers so that moving up feels different from moving down. Because stairs exist in three dimensions, the way a runner is seen and experienced changes with every angle and step. By shaping the weave, pattern, and texture to respond to these shifts, we create a journey that is dynamic and intentional—each ascent and descent revealing new surfaces, subtle textures, and the full sculptural presence of the stair.
