Relationships Guide Class Gift Agent

A

s a prospective student, Kelly Beth Hapgood, ’06, sensed a welcoming atmosphere when she walked through a residence hall on her first visit to Meredith College. Relationships and her curiosity to learn more about emotions, connections, and the science behind them drew her to major in psychology. And in 2015, connections with friends led her to start her own law firm.

After graduating from Meredith, Hapgood attended Wake Forest University with the intention of applying for a clinical psychology Ph.D. program.

As she learned more about herself she decided to go in a different direction.

Law was a natural fit considering her interest in people, and her background in writing and research. After passing the NC Bar in 2011, she practiced law in North Carolina for two years.

In 2013 Hapgood’s husband’s job with Wells Fargo was relocated to Houston, Texas. After taking the Texas Bar Exam, Hapgood started working for a large international law firm in their litigation department. A couple of years later, Hapgood made the difficult decision to

leave the firm after having her second child. She really struggled with the decision and wished there was a way to not leave the legal world behind.

Little did she know that relationships with friends would lead to her opening her own law firm, Kelly Beth Hapgood Law, PLLC. Her friends helped her to see there was a need for small business legal support, specifically geared toward female-owned and/or local start-ups.

“I now serve as outside general counsel to a handful of small businesses, and I’ve provided start-up and risk mitigation legal advice to dozens more, some of which are owned by Meredith College friends,” said Hapgood.

Meredith relationships have been important to Hapgood. “Staying connected to classmates as a class gift agent has also been a lot of fun.

Those periodic touches give me an excuse to communicate with class members and learn where they are and what they’re up to.”

As class gift agent she encourages others to give, but her generous gifts have placed her in the Iris Society and Onyx Society.

“Financial support is essential to the College, like any institution, so it seems like the most effective way for me to show my gratitude for Meredith College and to ensure that it continues to be a launching pad for women for years to come.”

In addition, her husband’s company, Wells Fargo, matches her gift.

“We love that Wells Fargo matches our education-based donations. This is a generous benefit and an easy way to get extra money in the hands of the academic settings that matter most to our family.”

Learn about Giving Societies at Meredith

I

n addition to the gratifying feeling donors receive when they make a gift to Meredith College, the Office of Institutional Advancement honors donors through several giving societies.

These societies fall into two broad categories, annual giving and lifetime giving, and offer recognition to many of the College’s most loyal contributors.

Annual Giving Societies include the Ivy Society for graduates of the last ten years who give monthly; Onyx Society, recognizing donors who give for a minimum of three years consecutively; Iris Society, honoring donors who make annual gifts totaling $1,000 to $4,999; and the Iris Society President’s Circle recognizing donors whose yearly contributions total $5,000 to $24,999.

Similarly, Lifetime Giving Societies allow the College to recognize donors.

However, these societies honor giving amounts over a lifetime and using various vehicles such as estate gifts.

Lifetime Giving Societies include the

Heritage Society, honoring donors who contribute through estates, trusts, insurance policies, or gift annuities; the Stringfield Endowment Society, recognizing donors who give $25,000 or more to an endowed fund; and Thomas Meredith Society, which honors donors at three different levels. Within the Thomas Meredith Society, Bronze Circle honors donors making contributions of $100,000

to $499,999; the Silver Circle honors those making gifts of $500,000 to $999,999; and the Gold Circle honors contributors donating $1 million or more to the College. Meredith College is fortunate to have more than 337 contributors in the Thomas Meredith Society.

Every gift to Meredith College makes a difference. Giving Societies are just one way the College shows appreciation.

Alumna Supports Students and the Place that Molded Her

ue Anne James Schoonderwoerd, ’64, has helped others throughout her life as an educator, a retirement advisor, and mother to two sons. As a co-class agent, she is always ready to give, help, and lead in whatever is needed. Her monthly gifts to the College throughout the years and most recently a $50,000 planned gift for the Greatest Needs of the College will help by providing unrestricted money to support students.

Growing up close to Meredith College’s campus, Schoonderwoerd’s mother had her involved in many activities on campus such as Boots McDonald’s tap and creative dance classes, piano classes, and Ellen Brewer’s open houses and teas.

“My decision to attend Meredith was mine alone with no coercion necessary,” said Schoonderwoerd. “No one needed to explain that Meredith was the best fit for me. It was a done deal by age 18.”

Schoonderwoerd majored in math because it was always her favorite subject. She loved being a part of “The Perfect Class,” a nickname the class came up with during their time at Meredith.

After graduating, Schoonderwoerd spent 17 years as an educator in positions such as secondary math teacher, counselor, school psychologist, and elementary supervisor. From 198082 she was director of career education at American Samoa Community College in Pago, Pago. After returning to the United States and going through a divorce she decided to move to a corporate position and was in the male-oriented MONY Financial Services training program. After 18 months of studying for her financial licenses, she was ready to start on an exciting journey.

By 1984 she was recognized nationally in the top 10 of all MONY interns and her advising income exceeded what she earned in her last month as an educator, enabling her to support her two sons.

“The lesson learned was to like yourself, know yourself, believe in yourself, study, compete, and win strong,” said Schooderwoerd.

In 1984 she married her husband, Pete, and they became partners and owners of Retirement Advisors of NC.

After retiring in 2006, she became broker-in-charge and realtor of Sun Property, LLC, on the coast of North Carolina.

“I believe who we are today as alumnae was made possible because Meredith set the mold. Meredith taught me skills to compete and to find the best tools to stand out and make a difference. Our friends, our confidence, our goodness, and our knowledge molded us into strong women.”

When her sons asked her why she gave her first planned gift to Meredith College she simply said, “Because I love Meredith.”
