The Mission of Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia, Inc. is to create partnerships and services that respond to the needs of those who are poor in the North Philadelphia community, especially women, children and persons with special needs.

Vision: Our vision is to enhance our work as a hub for families; a place where they can come to receive services, create community and develop the gifts and talents each possess. Our three core programs of Early Education & Youth Development, Health & Wellness for the Aging, and Adult Education touch the needs of different generations and alleviate the struggles they may experience at each stage of life.

Dear Neighbors, Thank you for joining us in bringing Mercy to North Philadelphia for yet another incredible year. The 2016-2017 fiscal year saw not only our 20th Anniversary celebrations, but also progress made toward the long-term vision of our mission. Our vision is to enhance our work as a hub for families; a place where they can come to receive services, create community and develop the gifts and talents each possess. Our three core programs of Early Education & Youth Development, Adult Day Programming, and Adult Education touch the needs of different generations and alleviate the struggles they may experience at each stage of life. Our ongoing theme, “Faces of Mercy,” touches on the impact we have by delving into the lives of our program participants daily, across generations.

Our 20th year brought our designation as a Keystone STARS Level 4 childcare program; the highest accreditation in the State of Pennsylvania. In our community, this is a rarity at a time when programs like ours are necessary to combat generally underfunded extracurricular activities and subpar care. In working with our children, we also work to engage the whole family. Transforming lives requires communication. Bettering our present requires sustaining our past, and believing in our future leads to us living our motto of transforming lives, one person at a time.

From a fiscal standpoint, Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia, Inc. has grown from a $1.2 million budget to a nearly $2.1 million budget in a three year span. Your belief in our mission brought $451,000 in raised dollars in 2016-17, a 4.4% percent increase over the prior year. Perhaps more important than this percentage increase was the increase in our number of supporters which more than doubled from 301 in 2016 to 637 in 2017! The growth we have experienced at every level would be impossible without you, our generous supporters, our Board, our neighbors, our friends at Meridian Bank, our amazing staff and our program participants who grow as a result of our programs. Internally, we have managed our fiscal growth by adding staff and elevating positions from within to ensure the passion behind our mission is not lost in the numbers.

Success for Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia, Inc. is defined not only by positive program results and an increase in revenue. Rather, we pride ourselves on the ability to share our mission with individuals in need of our services throughout Philadelphia.

For this reason, we will be opening a second site for early education in January, 2018 housed at Face to Face of Germantown, an organization that has spent the last 20 years feeding Philadelphia’s homeless population. A year-long renovation of Face to Face’s facilities will provide Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia, Inc. with three classrooms to serve an additional 60 children daily!

2017 Mercy Neighbor Award We celebrated our 20th year at the annual Mercy Neighbor Award by honoring the deserving Rev. Dr. Lorina Marshall-Blake, President of the Independence Blue Cross Foundation. Their work has been essential to the success of Mercy and a multitude of nonprofits in the Philadelphia region through their “Building Healthier Communities” initiative.

Rev. Dr. Lorina Marshall-Blake accepts the 2017 Mercy Neighbor Award from Sr. Ann Provost, RSM and Board Chair, Jack Crowley, along with a Citation from the City of Philadelphia presented by City Representative, Sheila Hess.

Picture Perfect Parenting By Nia Daye Profile: Wanda Thomas As a mother, entrepreneur, volunteer, neighbor, and social media aficionado, Wanda Thomas is never short on perspective. Her photography proves this as she is able to focus on her subjects in a way that highlights their individuality.

She captures the candid smiles of our neighbors across generations and enhances our marketing materials in doing so. Of all the ways to describe Wanda, it is most efficiently and accurately summed up in saying, ‘She cares.’

• Tell me how you first got involved with Mercy. I got involved with MNM as a result of a neighbor’s recommendation; we came for a visit and fell in love.

• Why do you continue to support this organization? I am a Catholic school girl, so I understand the Sisters’ mission; it was one that I grew up with and feel that the neighborhood needs. The values that they teach are the same values that I want my children to grow up with.

• What do you wish other people knew about Mercy? I wish others knew that MNM really does change the neighborhood and the lives of the people it touches. These kids are different, they have goals, they have a road map, and the foundation that MNM provides is unmatched.

• Tell me something people may be surprised to know about you. I grew up with an eating disorder. I used over the counter pills and drugs to force myself to stop eating. I went into rehab for it while in college (I went to Chestnut Hill College); this is why I believe in teaching girls about healthy self-worth via photography because I didn’t have it growing up. Today, I’ll say I’m supa fly but, at 15, never!

Sustaining Our Past By Nia Daye Profile: Sr. Margi Savage, SSJ As a Sister of St. Joseph, Sr. Margi has served in educational, pastoral, administrative, and social service ministries in NJ, NC, DC, MD and PA. She was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, and has been greatly blessed by all the people she’s gotten to know along the way. Beginning her third year as Outreach Coordinator here at Mercy, she works mainly with the Adult Day Program. She interfaces with participants, staff, caregivers and family members, and volunteers, while also networking with as many individuals and organizations as possible to get the word out about our program. Her job encompasses many tasks, such as welcoming potential clients and their families to our Center, guiding them in the enrollment process, and arranging for events, presentations, and services that will bring people into our center.

Tell me how you first got involved with Mercy.

• Why do you continue to support this organization? The networking, connections and interactions I’ve had through MNM are life-giving and inspiring. I love walking through the door each morning.

• What do you wish other people knew about Mercy? MNM is an oasis in this neighborhood and in this city. So many people are part of the fabric of this amazing place. It is truly an uplifting and empowering environment!

• Tell me something people may be surprised to know about you. For a brief time, I lived on a tiny island called Yap, which is located in the South Pacific.

The Laws of Mercy By Nia Daye Profile: The Honorable Kelley B. Hodge, Esq., Acting District Attorney, City of Philadelphia Kelley B. Hodge is the 25th District Attorney for the City of Philadelphia. Ms. Hodge took the oath of office to become Philadelphia’s District Attorney on July 24, 2017. Prior to becoming District Attorney, Ms. Hodge worked in private practice at the law firm of Elliott Greenleaf, P.C. in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. An experienced trial attorney with more than 20 years of legal experience, Ms. Hodge has spent fifteen of her twenty years in practice in the courtroom handling a wide array of criminal cases. A proven litigator, Ms. Hodge has also gained significant managerial experience serving as a Senior Assistant Public Defender in Richmond and as a supervising Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia, serving as Chief of the Municipal Court Unit and Assistant Chief in the Juvenile Unit. She has served as a mentor and instructor for attorneys and legal interns. She also serves as a mentor to young high school girls through the national Women of Tomorrow organization.

Ms. Hodge earned her Juris Doctor in 1996 from the University of Richmond’s T.C. Williams School of Law, and her Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Affairs and Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA in 1993. She is married to her husband of 18 years, John W. Hodge III, and they have a nine-year-old son. A native of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, she and her family currently live in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia.

• Tell me how you first got involved with Mercy. I first was introduced to Mercy through the parent of a dear friend who continues to serve on the Board of MNM. She approached me to see if I would have an interest in serving on the Board and, after learning about MNM, its mission and its relationship to the community, I decided to commit and become involved.

• Why do you continue to support this organization? I continue to support MNM because I believe in the work that it does to improve the lives of people in and around the community where MNM is located.

• What do you wish other people knew about Mercy? I wish people knew the history of how MNM came to exist and how it services children, adults and the elderly every day with structured programming, early childhood education and access to employment information and training.

• Tell me something people may be surprised to know about you. People would be surprised to learn that when I was a child I really enjoyed singing and took voice lessons. I thought I was going to become a Broadway performer when I grew up.

A Very Mercy Christmas

The generous members of Fit Tribe of Havertown decked our halls and filled the hearts of our families by donating a bicycle for every Mercy student. Each year, our partners across the Greater Philadelphia Area fulfill the Christmas lists of every student enrolled in the early education program.

Wake Up Everybody – Saturday Morning Mentoring

On the third Saturday of each month, Mercy students participated in the Mercy Kids Program, coordinated by our Assistant Director of Philanthropy, Ms. Nia Daye.

In partnership with the local Diversity Council community of the University of Notre Dame, Mercy Kids Program is a youth program catering primarily to 3rd-8th graders to provide additional resources that will build selfesteem and confidence, empower, and educate each child in order for them to be more successful in the future. The program includes workshops, presentations and events focused on varying topics, such as Leadership, Current Events and Educational Preparation (high school & college).

Sustaining Our Past By Nia Daye Profile: Barbara Willis-Powell Spending nearly 30 years working at The Caring Center, a Keystone STARS and National Association of Early Young Children “NAEYC” Accredited Early Childhood Education Center, Barbara decided to change careers to work with Adults.

She stumbled across another joy when working with the children and offering Intergenerational Programs and Activities to grandparents of the center’s children, and other related retirees. She saw that their time together derailed the superficial aspects of being grandparents or elders wanting to buy the newest and greatest items; she observed the building of priceless relationships in their time spent together.

Barbara’s passions for gardening, youth and the community can be seen in her volunteer work outside of MNM with such organizations as the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, “DVAEYC” Delaware Valley of Early Young Children Association and Martin Luther King’s Association in Philadelphia. She continues to garden and is a trained seamstress in her start-up business, Threads of All Colors. In addition to her extensive life experience, Barbara has dual Pennsylvania Teachers certification from Cheyney, a trained seamstress in tailoring, upholsterer, and drapery. She attended LaSalle University for Business Administration, and also holds a B.S. in Science from Cheyney State University.

• Tell me how you first got involved with Mercy. As a high school student with the sisters at Holy Soul Catholic Church.

• Why do you continue to support this organization? The sisters offer community support to the youth, which later my daughter, Ashanda, became involved with. I volunteered my time with the youth group and assisted with the active seniors’ program, trips, etc., until I became an employee.

• What do you wish other people knew about Mercy? The support the Sisters of Mercy offer to the community. Their loyalty to their faith, mission, and to the community. I wish people would take interest in what is in their community and just stop by the Center, take a tour, spread the word what’s in their backyard, and take advantage of what Mercy Family Center has to offer. They would be surprised to learn of the many programs that are offered to all ages.

• Tell me something people may be surprised to know about you. I grew up in Tioga, attended Gratz High School, Cheyney State University (B.S.) and continued my education at LaSalle University and Arcadia University (Business Adm.) I enjoy gardening and have received awards for community gardening projects. I am a former Home Economics teacher (3yrs) and Child Care professional: teacher, supervisor and Assoc. Director for over 30 years. I organized many intergenerational events, trained retired seniors in ECE at a local University Job placement program. I am a seamstress, upholster and tailor. Once upon a time for a few years, I even spun an album or two.
