Letter from the CEO & Board Chair

Dear Friends,

You have been remarkable with your generosity during another challenging pandemic year. Through your support Mercy Learning Center continues to do its vibrant work of “Educating women…Educating families.”

You are aware of our two-generation approach of educating mothers and their children in our licensed childcare, and this report shows how the seeds that were sown many years ago have come to fruition. As we highlight our graduate Mami and her family you will note, I hope, how this pattern of success is happening in so many other families. Our 59 alumnae in college and the thirteen who just received college degrees demonstrate how families have grown thanks to your generosity in giving them access to MLC’s educational community.

We want to acknowledge our volunteers who assisted in our programs this year. You are amazing in your compassion, dedication and support of our women. Thank you for teaching English, math and citizenship. You have and continue to make a difference in our students’ educational journey.

As supporters, you have kept our students fed, housed, warm and with light. You have allowed MLC to expand its social services during this crisis and for the mission to continue forward. And, you are keeping many families safe in an ever-changing environment. As they come to and move on from MLC, their hearts are filled with gratitude for the ways you have assisted them educationally and in their time of need.

There is so much to be grateful for in this annual report to you. Our successes are your successes. You continue to fulfill dreams for women who never thought they were good enough for an education.

May this update bring you hope as you see lives changing! I invite you to visit MLC this year so you can see your generosity in action.

Gratefully,

Mami’s Story

Student, mother, wife, and registered nurse, Mami Ngombabu is the embodiment of Mercy Learning Center’s motto: “Educate a woman…educate a family.”

In 2001, Mami and her husband arrived in Bridgeport as refugees from South Africa. They had fled to South Africa from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to escape the civil war in her home country. With very limited knowledge of the English language, Mami left behind her parents and 9 siblings to escape the xenophobia her family endured, and to build a better life for her family.

Mami’s journey with Mercy Learning Center began the very next year. Her son Ruben was one year old and attended our free childcare program so that Mami could go to class. Ruben was one of the first babies that Maria Moreno, our Childcare Director, cared for when she started her career at Mercy 19 years ago!

“Mami is inspiring. She was very determined to accomplish her goals and did it step-by-step, while working and raising a family. Her perseverance for gaining education has been passed on to her own children.”

Mami learned how to speak, read, and write English in our ESL classes and earned her high school diploma in 2009 through our intensive study program. Mami became a U.S. citizen five years later with the support of our social services team.

She went on to earn her associate’s degree at Housatonic Community College, and graduated from St. Vincent’s College as a Registered Nurse in 2016. Mami now serves as a Nursing Supervisor at APT Foundation in New Haven, and is working on her master’s degree. Mercy Learning Center was here to support Mami in securing scholarships, navigating the admissions process and more.

Along the way, Mami’s daughter Benedicte came to Mercy Learning Center during summers and afterschool, so that Mami could focus on her studies. And bringing Mami’s story full circle, Benedicte today works as an Assistant in our Part-Time Program.

2021-2022 Annual Report2

Benedicte shared: “Mercy had a great impact on my mother’s life. I remember her dropping me off at school, going to Mercy for class, picking me up at school, and then taking me with her back to Mercy. It is only when I started working here that I realized Mercy Learning Center was about so much more than her education. It was her community. It was her village.”

Academic Programs

Education empowers our students to achieve their personal life goals and we are with them every step of the way. Whether choosing our full-time or parttime academic paths, each student participates in an individualized and intensive education plan delivered by our experienced teachers and volunteer tutors.

Programming levels include:

• English Language Education

• Citizenship classes

• Adult Basic Education

• General Education Diploma (GED®) Prep

• National External Diploma Program (NEDP®)

All full-time students receive instruction in math, reading, language arts, science, social studies/civics, and computer literacy. But it is only when we combine our comprehensive instruction with wrap-around support services (see pages 8 - 11 ) that our students attain and surpass goals previously unimaginable.

Orlinda is a mother of one from Honduras. She left school after 6th grade because her family could not afford the tuition. In January 2018 she enrolled as an ESL student at MLC. Orlinda attended MLC full-time until starting the NEDP® and earning her high school diploma in January 2022. Orlinda has since earned a full-time job and is enrolled at Housatonic Community College.

Paths to A High School Diploma

It is never too late to earn a high school equivalency diploma. Our oldest graduate was 60 years old and a grandmother! We make this possible through both the National External Diploma Program® and the General External Diploma®, and have graduated 413 students to date.

Every student has different life circumstances. They might work full-time, requiring a flexible study schedule with limited classroom time, or they might prefer a more structured classroom setting with access to our free childcare. By offering both the NEDP® and GED®, we customize the path to securing a high school diploma, which results in success.

Early Childhood

Breaking the cycle of poverty inspires our two-generation approach to education. By coupling adult learning programs for women with on-site childcare and preschool education for their children, we empower entire families to thrive.

Our Early Childhood Education Program (ECEP) provides children ages three months to five years with a high-quality preschool program, a strong pre-literacy foundation, and a high probability of success transitioning to kindergarten. 100% of our recent ECEP graduates are now fluent in English and entered English-dominant kindergarten classrooms this year.

By ‘wrapping’ our adult students with free childcare and other holistic supports, their basic needs are met, leaving them free to focus on their personal educational goals.

Celebrating a Triple Graduation

MLC student Sandra Dubon earned her GED right on the heels of her children Baker and Roselin graduating from our Early Childhood Education program. Baker & Roselin started kindergarten this year and Sandra began college. Congratulations to this wonderful family!

Education Program

Mother & Child Reading Program

Mothers with children in the ECEP participate in our weekly Mother-Child Reading Program. Here we foster an interest in reading among children and teach mothers the basics of child development, family literacy, home-school connection, and positive parenting. Our mothers become their children’s fi rst and best teachers through modeling, becoming masters of educational parenting strategies, and fostering a love of learning.

During the summer months, our Family Literacy Program allows our mothers to continue their educational classes while their children are engaged with exciting projects and activities that are largely STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related.

100%

of the mothers report that they now read to their child at home 56

families took home 24 new books to enjoy and start their home library.

decided to start my education after 20 years of working as a cashier and assembly line worker. Mercy Learning Center has encouraged me to pursue higher education. They helped me in obtaining my GED®. They also encouraged me to seek my Associate of Science in Accounting, which I completed this year with honors (Magna Cum Laude). Thanks to Mercy Learning Center and all the generous donors, my education has gone above and beyond anything I could have imagined.
