ABOUT ARTS AND CULTURE EVENTS AT MERCYHURST Each year Mercyhurst College welcomes artists and speakers from across the country and around the world who present the best in cutting-edge dance and award winning classical, contemporary, jazz and world music as well as engaging topics from a variety of disciplines. Today Mercyhurst offers more than 100 events each year and welcomes nearly 30,000 visitors who enjoy the wide variety of arts and culture events on campus. The Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, a $3.7 million, 800-seat complex, is the largest and most stunning of the performance spaces on campus. The venue hosts not only the college’s major performances but also the Guelcher Film Series and the Metropolitan Opera: HD Live. The 1,200-square-foot Walker Recital Hal opened in fall 2002 as an intimate performance venue. Located inside the Hirt Academic Building, the hall, which seats 250, is used for small lectures, recitals, and intimate jazz and world music performances. Celebrating its 60th birthday in 2011, Taylor Little Theatre, formerally known as “Little Theatre” was the first performance space at Mercyhurst. The 250-seat theatre was named for former college president Sister M. Eustace Taylor. What started as a hallway in Old Main to display student artwork has grown into Cummings Art Gallery, a stunning exhibit space featuring the works of student, faculty and professional artists. Today the gallery ranks among the best in the region with traveling and juried offerings.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 30 AT 8 P.M. AT WALKER RECITAL HALL Guitarist Roland Dyens is a true man of the world. Born in Tunisia and now residing in Paris, Dyens studied with the Spanish master Alberto Ponce. As the guitar becomes a nearly universal instrument, Dyens, a composer, an improviser and a spellbinding performer, gathers its entire history — several continents and many centuries of music — under his fingers. The phenomenal success of CELTIC WOMAN opened doors for Órla Fallon, the group’s singer and harpist from the village of Knockananna in County Wicklow, Ireland. These doors were at the White House and the Vatican where Fallon, now a solo performer, beguiled her very distinguished audiences. Fallon is an enchanting performer, as Public Television viewers of her 2010 special “Órla Fallon’s Celtic Christmas,” quickly learned. Nothing succeeds like success, though success seems insufficient to describe the electrifying performance by the Paul Taylor Dance Company during the 2007-2008 season. To attend a performance by this company is to reconsider the limits of the human body and imagination. GrammyŽ-nominated pianist David Lanz is not the sort of artist to sit still. A mainstay during the early days of the New Age-oriented Narada label, Lanz’s curiosity propelled him to explore music far from his meditative, solo-piano roots. Now he takes on one of the most imposing monuments in 20th-century music: the Beatles songbook. It’s become a much-loved Erie tradition: the biennial visit of the Japanese taiko drum orchestra Wadaiko Yamato. The 14 drummers of the Japanese ensemble may be choreographed with the stylized precision of Kabuki theater, but the sound they produce is felt as much as heard — especially that of the sound the o-daiko, a drum the size of a small car whacked by what looks like a baseball bat. SUNDAY, NOV. 20 AT 7 P.M. Has any artist captivated a room quite like vocalist René Marie did during her 2001 appearance in Erie? The effect was scarcely different outdoors at the 2003 Erie Art Museum Blues & Jazz Festival. A few vocalists combine gospel ardor, R&B sass and jazz artistry, but no female vocalist on the scene today does this with the daring and utter commitment of René Marie. An evening of mixed repertoire exploring the boundaries of dance as an evolving art form and striving to connect performers with audience members through nonverbal vocabulary and the unexplainable beauty of movement.
This ever popular event showcases the innovative works of coming-of-age choreographers and is the only event of its kind held in Erie where audiences can be a part of history as young choreographers present new dances. Alumni of The Mercyhurst Dancers will join this concert as guest artists.

Our holiday gift to Erie, family programming centered on the delights of the season offering Santa’s Toy Shop, The Skaters and a spiritually based premiere presented by the Liturgical Dance Ensemble. Dancers will greet the audience in the lobby before and after the performance.

The Mercyhurst Dancers will be showcased in the choreography of acclaimed twentieth century choreographers Gerald Arpino’s Viva Vivaldi 2nd movement and Tomm Ruud’s Mobile. A premiere by Solveig Santillano and Marius Petipa’s Paquita will complete the program.
