FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

NATALIE CIRIGLIANO BROSNAN ’02, ED.D. As we enter this holiday season, I am truly grateful for everything that Mercy is to all of us. For the first time in two years Mercy is once again decorated for the holidays, and the spirit of the season is alive in our hallways. Watching the students talk excitedly about the return of this tradition brings me joy in a way that is hard to fully describe, in large part because of what it represents. There are so many traditions that make up our Mercy education, with each generation of Mercy students experiencing a little something different. Returning to campus this year, we had to remind ourselves that only our senior class had fully experienced a normal year of Mercy. Knowing that only a fourth of our student body had knowledge of certain traditions meant that our seniors became the keepers of our traditions and the protectors of that special something that makes Mercy so magical. Our senior class has owned this responsibility with tremendous pride, and they are actively passing down their knowledge of Mercy and our traditions with care and love. This season we all have so much to be grateful for. I am particularly grateful for the joy and comfort that Mercy gives to so many of us. Because of the love you and our students have shown to Mercy throughout the pandemic, I can confidently say that Mercy is stronger than ever and ready for its future. I am grateful for all you are to Mercy and am hopeful for your continued desire to be a part of Mercy's legacy. May you all be blessed with health and love this holiday season, and may the joy and spirit of Mercy be with you always. THE OAKS WINTER 2021 3

Alumnae

The Breidinger Sisters Annie Breidinger ’17

Purdue University BS Mechanical Engineering, now at Apple, Test Engineer

Toni Breidinger ’17

Race Car Driver

What motivated you to pursue your profession? Annie: There was definitely a time when I was contemplating

if I should pursue a career as a race car driver or go to college. Ultimately, I chose to continue my education. School was something that I really enjoyed and excelled at, and the AP classes that I took only made me more curious about what else there was to learn in college. Since sophomore year of high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a profession in STEM, because I was often excited about the material that I was learning in my science and math classes at Mercy. My background in motorsports led me to become interested in a career in the automotive field. And by junior year, I was narrowing down colleges to apply to based on their Mechanical Engineering programs. I graduated from Purdue University this past May, and I am now working as a Test Engineer at Apple.

Toni: When I started go-karting at 9-years-old, I realized that racing was something I was passionate about and I wanted to dedicate my life to accomplishing my goals in motorsports. I think when you’re passionate about something it helps you to keep going and really pursue the things you want to achieve. I am very ambitious and stubborn, so I feel like I naturally keep myself motivated. But I also have my bad days, where motivation is just a struggle. I’m lucky because the people I surround myself with are always there to lift me up and keep me in a positive mindset.

Spotlight What is it like to be a woman in your field? Annie: Although

it may seem like transitioning from an all-girls school to a male-dominated field was difficult, I had almost no issues getting accustomed to the change in environment. At Mercy, I was never treated differently for being a female in a highlevel Math class, and I carried this mindset and confidence with me as I completed my Engineering courses. Oftentimes I rarely even noticed gender in the classroom. For example about three weeks into my Machine Design Lab at Purdue, I looked around the classroom and noticed that I was one of two women in a room of 30 people. I didn't feel intimidated; I reminded myself that I was just as capable at excelling in this field.

Toni: I’ve never singled myself out at the track as a female surrounded by males. The track doesn’t know gender, the car doesn’t know gender, so gender is irrelevant. There have been times when I’ve experienced some discrimination and heard people make comments. I ignore it. I know it’s there, but I don’t pay attention to or give energy to negative people who say things behind my back just because I’m a female. At the end of the day, we’re all drivers on the same track racing towards the same goal.

FEATURE

What aspect of Mercy High School did you like the most? Annie: My favorite aspect of Mercy was that I never felt

judged for being myself, and I was given the tools I needed to realize my full potential. More specifically, AP Chemistry was the class that initially made me realize what I was truly capable of. I almost didn't sign up for it when scheduling my classes, because I was scared of failure. I thought I wasn't "smart enough" but Dr. Bradley and my peers pushed me to challenge myself and take the course. It ended up being one of my favorite classes at Mercy, and it led me to pursue more high-level STEM courses.

Toni: My favorite thing about Mercy is how much it empowered me— and of course the sisterhood! Mercy taught us that girls can do anything, and it was put into practice everyday at school. Mercy girls are captains of their teams, school ambassadors, and leaders in the classroom. At Mercy, girls fill every leadership position and participate in every sport and activity. As a Mercy girl, you never imagine a world where girls are less capable. What advice would you give current Mercy students? Annie: Don't be too comfortable, and don't be afraid

of challenges. Most of the time, pursuing what you are passionate about will not be an easy path. However, there is nothing worse than the regret of not trying. So don't let the fear of failure deter you from going after your dreams.

Toni: Go do it. Be the girl that actually goes and does it. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemies whether it’s from fear or anxiety or both. Whether your dream is to race or to do something that’s out of the norm, be confident in yourself. The best way to gain self-confidence is to do what you’re afraid to do. Don’t let that fear hold you back from something that is your passion and your dream. Even if you’re the first one to do it.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day - OCTOBER 11 Mercy recognized and celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which was established in San Francisco in 2018. It is celebrated to honor the lives, cultures, and histories of the original inhabitants of this land. Mercy reflected on the painful history and current Native American struggles that are acknowledged on this day. Our students, faculty, and staff recognize and honor the cultures and people who have lived on these lands longer than anyone. Religion teacher Maika Hefflefinger shared that in her Religion 2 and 3 classes, students listened to a video where Lakota elders and tribal members expressed the powerful impact land acknowledgment can have on them and the healing and understanding that can come between Native and non-Native peoples when the history of the land on which we stand is acknowledged and honored. Afterwards, students had the opportunity to look up what Native territory their home, birthplace, or any special place of meaning resides on. Students learned how Mercy resides on the ancestral land of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula. It was a special day where we held in our prayers our Indigenous students, alumnae, and colleagues. Learn about land acknowledgement by watching a short YouTube video called #HonorNativeLand and see which Native territory your home, workplace, or possibly even birthplace resides on this interactive map at https://native-land.ca/."

Indigenous History OF NATIONAL PARKS

After learning about Andrew Jackson’s brutal treatment of Native Americans in Mr. McGoron’s US History class, students researched the indigenous history of America’s national parks. Using the Atlantic article, “Return the National Parks to the Tribes,” students presented ideas for how reparations could be made for the displacement suffered by native tribes today. “As we honor National American Indian Heritage Month, it is important to recognize this often forgotten history of our national landmarks.”

—Mr. McGoron, M.Ed., Social Studies Department Chair

Flag Memorial in Honor of the

20TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 On the 20th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, Mercy students paid tribute to the 2,977 victims. Social Studies and freshmen Religion classes placed a flag for each person who lost their life, and all students were invited to honor the victims by visiting the memorial and participating in a prayer service. Student lessons emphasized how 9/11 changed history in a number of ways including war, air travel, and surveillance. By reading “Five Ways September 11th Changed America” by Dave Roos (www.history.com), students gained an understanding that we are living in a "Post-9/11 Era" where a lot of our challenges today, such as ending the war in Afghanistan, have a direct connection to the 9/11 attacks. “Mercy students helped create a memorial on campus to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 and learned in their classes how the attacks impacted major developments of the 21st century. At the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City there is a quote from Virgil that says, 'No day shall erase you from the memory of time.' These 2,977 flags represent the lives that were lost 20 years ago on September 11th, 2001. We can never forget that day and its impact on history.”

Robotics Team Prepares for the FTC Tech Challenge

Mercy Robotics is back in the classroom and gearing up for their FTC team competitions! After earning the Think Award 2nd Prize at their first tech challenge last year, they are looking forward to this year’s “in person” competition. Team interactions and preparation for competition were limited during last year’s Distance Learning, while all competitions were also virtual. This year the experience will be completely hands-on! The Robotics Team will engage in a game where they design, build, test, and program autonomous and driver-operated robots that perform a series of tasks for FIRST Robotics. The Robotics class prepares students for college and real-world engineering experiences. Students go from having no expertise to actual hands-on experience in robot building. They would be delighted to hear from Mercy graduates working in the engineering world, and would be grateful for any advice they can offer to current students! If you would like to share your experience with the Robotics class, emails can be sent to Assistant Head of School For Academics Lauren Conklin (lconklin@ mercyhsb.com).

RALLIES

ON CAMPUS

One of my favorite things as a student at Mercy were the rallies on the Green. Having the entire student body cheering and showing their Mercy Spirit was invigorating to me then, and I am so happy our students were able to continue this tradition this year after taking a year long break from gatherings for COVID. This Fall 2021, we have celebrated our Welcome Rally, Mercy Day Rally, and our Breast Cancer Awareness Rally. So far this year, our rainbow of class T-shirts has felt brighter and the class pride has felt louder at our rallies. We missed celebrating our sisterhood together, and I could see that all our Mercy students wanted to make up for lost time by painting their faces, dancing, and competing in the race for Spirit Points. I look forward to many more memorable Mercy Rallies to come! Go Mercy! —Claire Rietmann-Grout '04, Assistant Head of School for Student Life

e m o c l e W LUNCH!

PINK WEEK

Every year Mercy celebrates Pink Week in October with the goal of both supporting and honoring those journeying with breast cancer as well as educating students around breast health. During Pink Week, Mercy holds its annual Pink Rally where students donate their hair to Locks of Love. This tradition always brings many smiles as students compliment each other for weeks afterwards about their new haircuts and the gift they gave to the breast cancer and Alopecia patients, who will be the eventual recipients of their hair.

Recognizing that last year was an incredibly difficult social year for many of our students and that many of our students had not been on campus for over a year, Mercy organized a Welcome Back lunch for students, faculty, and staff. The day proved to be a wonderful opportunity to build community, while providing a comfortable space to return to campus prior to the first day of classes. It was a perfect day on the Green and everyone enjoyed the taco bar and ice cream sundaes!

CERAMICS

This semester Ceramics classes focused on varied surface design methods. One of the investigated methods is Sgraffito. According to Britannica, "sgraffito (Italian: scratched), in the visual arts, is a technique used in painting, pottery, and glass, which consists of putting down a preliminary surface, covering it with another, and then scratching the superficial layer in such a way that the pattern or shape that emerges is of the lower colour."

Students showed off their Photoshop skills in a David Hockney style “Joiner” or collage. The majority of the photos featured the beautiful Kohl Mansion.

Currently serving as the President of the National Art Honor Society, Amalia’s portfolio explored anxiety through a Marine motif earning a perfect score on her AP 2D Art and Design Exam. Amalia was one of 152 students in the world to earn a perfect score. 2D Art & Photography Teacher, Shardie Ezell stated, “Amalia is extremely talented and I am not surprised by what she has accomplished. All of the art students have shown commitment and promise with their skills, ability and passion. It makes me so proud that last year all of my AP students passed their AP Studio Art 2D exam. I continue to look forward to the amazing work made by my Mercy Ladies”.

ATHLE

ON CAMPUS

Meet...

Our Athletics Director! Kelly Hickey serves as Mercy High School’s Athletics Director. Ms. Hickey earned her B.A. in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of San Francisco and her M.S. in Kinesiology from San Francisco University, where she focused her thesis study on an examination of gender inequities in Division I sports post Title IX. Ms. Hickey has served as a college instructor and tennis coach at West Valley College, Evergreen College, and City College of San Francisco. As a former graduate of an all-girls Catholic high school, Ms. Hickey is excited to promote and grow our athletic program while developing our student-athletes.

My vision for athletics is to grow our programs both by the numbers and competitiveness.

—Kelly Hickey, Athletics Director

JV Golf

This year we were excited to add a JV Golf team to meet the increased desire to play this sport. JV Golf focused on skill development and athletes look forward to future competitions!

FALL 2021

Varsity Golf

Varsity Golf had another successful season led by WBAL Golf Champion Brooke Barron ‘22, who shot a 37 at Sunnyvale Municipal Course. Brooke continued on to compete in the CCS Championship.

Cross Country Team Cross Country improved their times with every race. Led by a core group of juniors who were joined by strong runners in the freshman class, the team is excited to return a majority of athletes next year. Water Polo

The Mercy Water Polo Team enjoyed a rebuilding year as they had six freshmen join the program (and sport!). The water polo team transformed in speed and skill development throughout the season.

Sister Act Growing up on the west coast of Ireland, the McGuire sisters seemed destined

to spend time in the water. Summer and Lily have been in the water since they were 3 months old and have been making a splash around ever since. When they arrived in Northern California the family found new pools and a new sport in water polo. When Summer started at Mercy she tried out for the water polo team because of her background in swimming. Once Summer got into the sport, Lily joined a water polo club team so that she could be ready to join the team at Mercy. Now, both sisters are on the Varsity team. This can be challenging for some, however both Summer and Lily have relished the opportunity. When asked what the best part about having Lily on the team this year, Summer replied, “I have my sister right behind me, I get to show her the ropes.” The water polo team has great leadership from a core group of seniors and juniors. All freshmen have found their space quickly thanks to that leadership. Both sisters noted how the intensity has increased in practices throughout the season saying, “Mrs. CB is a really good coach, she doesn’t hold back in drills and is focused on conditioning.” Summer ’23

HIGHLIGHTS Cong Junior Varsity Tennis faced some stiff competition early in the season which helped prepare them for league play. When it came to doubles, they excelled with victories over Castilleja and Notre Dame San Jose. Varsity Tennis held their own with victories over Riordan,

Priory, and Notre Dame Belmont. While Varsity Tennis will lose a lot of seniors, there is a strong group of underclassmen ready to lead the team for many years.

ARI MONTIEL ’22

Congratulations to Arianna Montiel on signing her letter of commitment to play Division I Softball at Howard University. Ari has started all three years at Mercy and is looking forward to her senior season this Spring. She is excited to continue her athletic career as a part of the Howard University Bison. Good luck, Ari!

Mercy’s Freshman Volleyball Team proved to be a powerhouse as they took home the WBAL Championship title as well as the Half Moon Bay Tournament 1st place trophy!

MISSION

Mission & SERVICE

Mercy Week Liturgy We began our Mercy Week celebration with mass at Our Lady of Angels. Mercy Week celebrates the values of our foundress Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy. We honor our Mercy values and the work of the Mercy Community that began 194 years ago in the House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland.

Mercy’s School Supply Drive for Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS) in Half Moon Bay was a great success! ALAS assists farm workers on the Coast and asylum seekers from the Texas and San Diego Mexico border. Supplies were given out on September 4th. A group of Mercy students and our Campus Ministers (Sandy Flaherty and Angie Simonetti) were able to help. Again a big thank you to our students and Mercy community!

Día de los Muertos Mercy’s Religion classes decorated our altar by the grotto with photos of loved ones for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It is a holiday rooted in Mexican culture that honors deceased family members. Celebrants make ofrendas (altars) decorated with marigolds, sugar skulls, favorite food/ beverage, and photos. We’d like to thank our Mercy community for creating a beautiful ofrenda for our loved ones!

MISSION

St. Anthony Foundation Religion Teacher Maika Hefflefinger’s Sophomore Religion class visited St. Anthony’s Foundation in the Tenderloin community of San Francisco. Several students had the opportunity to contribute, serving over 2,000 lunches that are provided daily in the dining hall to community members who may be experiencing low funds towards the end of the month and even those who may be experiencing homelessness at this time. St. Anthony’s prides themselves in respecting the dignity of every human person who comes to St. Anthony’s, welcoming and referring to each guest by their first name—something that has left a lasting impression on the students. In addition, other students helped sort through many bins of recently donated clothing to hang neatly on the next clothes racks to go out into the clothing stores, where individuals and families can shop for new or lightly used clothing at least once per month! Some students even helped as assistants in the store— catering to the fashion preferences of St. Anthony’s guests. All in all, it was a beautiful and rewarding day! Two more sophomore religions classes will be attending next semester.

Marian Grotto Dedication

Kairos

The official dedication of our Marian Grotto was held on September 23rd, the Vigil of the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy. Students and our Mercy community brought so many beautiful flowers that were placed at the Grotto. At the beginning of each class period, Religion classes gathered at the Grotto for a short prayer service. And at Noon, St. Catherine of Siena School’s kindergarten class visited, sang Marian songs, and presented a lovely crown for Mary. Their kindergarten teacher Marian Abbott is an alumna of Mercy. After classes, we held the official dedication of the Grotto by Fr. Stephen Howell. Religion teachers also led us in prayer. Mercy alumna Una Kinsella, the project designer, and former Facilities Director Darrell Justus, who built the grotto, were present and honored. We would like to extend our special thanks to our Campus Ministers Angie Simonetti and Sandy Flaherty for their vision and commitment to the making of a very special Marian Grotto on our campus garden walkway that students and community can enjoy daily.

Seniors at Kairos

We were incredibly grateful to once again be able to offer our students the opportunity to attend the overnight Kairos Retreat. Kairos provides the opportunity for students to reflect on their relationship with themselves, others and God. The word Kairos means God’s time. Kairos gives students the opportunity and time to allow God to work in them.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Every girl at Mercy has a unique journey. She begins as a freshman, eager to learn new things and to grow in mind, body, and spirit. Along the way she will be known, be challenged, and be transformed. She will discover herself and the joy of serving others. In our classes, on the Green, at Mass and at retreats, through art, dance, athletics, performing arts, and more, our students learn from each other. They bring their unique gifts and talents to a community of educators and leaders uniquely trained to teach young women at this important time as they transition from adolescence into adulthood in a Mercy community.

Making A Difference levels the playing field, making a Mercy education attainable for those who cannot afford the full cost of tuition. 26 MERCY HIGH SCHOOL, BURLINGAME

Our community has enthusiastically supported tuition assistance through the Making A Difference Scholarship Benefit, assisting Mercy in providing a financial bridge that gives young women access to the outstanding education and opportunities available at Mercy. Impact of Philanthropy at Mercy At Mercy, every girl is known, challenged and transformed. In the past year, we experienced this in a way like never before. Whether class was taught remotely or in person; our faculty and staff were ready to ensure that our students had a full Mercy experience during the pandemic. From online yoga during lunch, guest speakers, and class events, we worked together as a community to support our students as they faced a challenge that we had never experienced. Through your generosity, you have made this possible. Your support and commitment to Mercy is deeply appreciated—we could not do this good work without you. In a year like no other, the Mercy community came together when we needed you most. We raised over $1.5 million; more than any other year in our history. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting our mission of educating young women. —With gratitude, Mary Lund, Director of Advancement

Mercy classmates of Camila and Maya established The Agape Award in memory of Camila and Maya with a goal of raising the initial $25,000 to formally establish the endowment. Gifts and pledges of any amount are deeply appreciated. To date, $17,883 has been raised. With gratitude, Olivia Feller '14, Cassidy McCarter '14, and Alana Wilson '14 Camila and Maya formed a deep connection during the Kairos retreat, where Camila was Maya’s retreat leader. Camila described their relationship as a special bond and said she was grateful that Maya was able to share her dreams of a bright future with her. In connection with the teachings of Mercy and the messages of the Kairos retreat, we named this award The Agape Award. Agape ["aga-pay"] is universal love, such as the love for strangers, nature, or God. It does not depend on filiation or familiarity. Also called charity by Christian thinkers, agape can be said to encompass the modern concept of altruism, as defined as unselfish concern for the welfare of others. Camila and Maya undoubtedly lived out the meaning of agape, and this award will continue their legacy of supporting and helping others. ALUMNAE

Pat McAdoo ‘65, P.T. Pat McAdoo ‘65, P.T., is a retired U.S. Public Health Service officer and currently an independent clinician in Anchorage, Alaska. She travels to rural hospitals within the state to provide relief services when help is needed. Pat credits her Mercy education as the reason she never accepts the status quo and why she is always looking for ways big and small to make a better world. Pat hopes our students know that “As Mercy grads, they will have the tools and skills to make a better world by doing their best each day.” Pat was recently featured in the September 2021 issue of the American Physical Therapy Association magazine in which she wrote about her childhood, the inspiration behind her career path, and the joy of her career. Below is an excerpt adapted from her article “A Physical Therapist by Any Other Name”. You can contact Pat at mcadoo@alaska.net.

In 1952, my dad was recalled to active duty in the Navy and

deployed to Japan in support of the Korean conflict. My 25-yearold pregnant mother, 3-year-old brother, and I, age 5, moved to Coronado, California. Several months after our arrival, the 1953 polio epidemic broke out. Public swimming pools were closed, and group social activities were canceled. (Sound familiar?) Despite our strict adherence to these measures, I contracted polio and was admitted to the County Hospital in San Diego. A few weeks later, my brother was admitted to the next bed. Our very pregnant mom came faithfully each day to wave at us through the window as she stood on the lawn. The weeks passed and we finally were able to go home, but we had to return weekly to see “the Exercise Lady.” In all honesty, I don’t remember any of the exercises we did, but I do remember how caring the Exercise Lady was to my brother, me, and especially to my mother. Alone, separated from her Chicago family, awaiting the delivery of her third child, and praying each day for the safe return of her husband, my mom’s life was not easy. The Exercise Lady began each session with all three of us sitting on the mat and telling her how things were going. A woman well ahead of her time, she had us articulate our short- and long-term goals. I wanted to get back on the two-wheeler that my dad had taught me to ride just before he deployed, and I wanted to start first grade as scheduled in September. My brother wanted to climb the tree in the front yard, and my mom wanted her family back together safely and her children healthy. Each visit, we left with pictures of that week’s home program and a great big hug from the Exercise Lady. Each time, she told my mom, “you are doing a great job.” My brother and I both realized that the Exercise Lady was helping our mom as much as she was helping us. We were not sure who she was, but she really knew her stuff and was committed to helping our family. By the time school started in September 1953, I was able to enter first grade. It took a couple more months before I could ride my bike well. We left Coronado the next spring following my dad’s return home,

but we always remembered the Exercise Lady, and I thought it would be really neat to be like her—someone who could help people and let them know she cared about them. In high school, I sustained a knee injury and was referred to physical therapy. I recognized this hard-working crew as the Exercise Lady’s progeny! I pelted each therapist with questions about where she went to school, how she liked the job, and what the salary was. I wrote to each of the 48 physical therapist education programs to learn their prerequisites. I set my sights on the certificate programs, knowing I could always fall back on my bachelor’s degree if I didn’t get accepted—all the physical therapists I encountered seemed very smart, and I wasn’t sure I would be able to make the cut. With scholarships, loans, work-study, and several part-time jobs, I was able to attend the University of San Francisco. I applied to five certificate programs, dreading the additional loans that I would have to take out so that I could attend. I was accepted into the U.S. Army program at Fort Sam Houston, Texas! It entailed a two-year commitment, but I would be paid as a second lieutenant and my undergraduate loans would not accrue interest while I was on active duty. The education program was an intense 40-hour-per-week, 54-week program. Despite being from all over the country, the 21 members of my class quickly bonded, and our motto was “Together we graduate.” Early on we were introduced to the history of the profession and to APTA. Maj. Joyce McDowell described her experiences as president of the District of Columbia Chapter testifying before Congress during the Medicare hearings. Being a good therapist included not just conquering the mounds of knowledge that were presented in our classroom, but also being a patient advocate and a change agent. We quickly learned from Col. Marilyn Anderson that “evaluate and treat” was the best referral you could get, as it opened the door to your own clinical decision-making.

This past October, Maureen Marconi ‘63 and Janice Mifsud Khalil ‘63 renewed their friendship after 60 years in Carlsbad, CA. Janice attended Mercy Burlingame during her sophomore and junior years but moved to Daly City in her senior year, graduating from Mercy SF. Maureen lost contact with her, and on a whim she checked Facebook and there was Janice! She quickly messaged her. Oh the wonders of the internet! Janice lives in Brentwood in Contra Costa County with her husband. Two of their three sons live close by. The Khalils are blessed with 10 grandchildren. They look forward to getting together again next October when Janice and her husband vacation in Carlsbad. Maureen is still trying to find another Mercy friend, Gail Doyle. Does anyone know where she is?

CLASS NOTES Aimee and Amy Bring Back the Christmas Spirit to Mercy! When Aimee O’Donnell Saunders ‘97 left her corporate job to go back to school in City College's Floristry program, her first call was to Mercy classmate Amy Romano Vassar ‘97 owner of Garden Party at the San Francisco Flower Market. Immediately, Amy supported her life-long friend in her career change. Who would have known that years later they would be bringing their talents to their alma mater by taking on the Christmas decorating of our beautiful Kohl Mansion! Through their leadership, creativity, and deep love for Mercy, they have once again turned our Kohl Mansion into a magical Christmas scene with the help of their design teams and our many Mercy volunteers. We are grateful to Amy and Aimee for their leadership, Board member Kelli Benz for her overall oversight, and to our superstar team of volunteers for helping make this holiday season a very special one for Mercy. “When Amy and I arrived on Monday morning of the decoration week, we bumped into Sandy Flaherty who greeted us heartily—’Welcome Home!’ and I almost burst into tears. With the loss of Mrs. Biernat fresh in our hearts, and all the treasured memories of my sister and friends there—it was so meaningful in that moment to realize again—we all have a home at Mercy. A piece of my heart is there— and helping bring Christmas to life in the Kohl Mansion this season was so very special.” —Aimee O’Donnell Saunders ‘97

Mercy Annual Fund is the cornerstone of philanthropy at Mercy.

2013 Olivia Zell ‘13 and Paige Halas ‘13 decided during the pandemic to really pursue their passions outside of their current occupations. Paige is a third year Ph.D. student studying metastatic breast cancer at UC Irvine. She realized how misunderstood science is and responded to a call to action to better educate others about scientific topics in an approachable manner. She started @beautyandthebiotechbeast on Instagram and a podcast under the same name to share her journey through graduate school and break down complex scientific concepts. Meanwhile, Olivia was laid off from her job during the pandemic and decided to lean into her passion for sewing and love of animals and started a small business. Her business Saucey Scarves @sauceyscarves on Instagram, specializes in handmade accessories for pets and their humans such as pet bandanas, bow ties, scrunchies, masks, and headbands! Olivia not only has an online store, but has gone to farmers markets and local businesses with her adorable accessories. She has also done philanthropic work, donating items to a senior dog rescue and raising money for the Trevor Project during Pride month. With Paige’s passion for breast cancer research and Olivia’s creative talents, they decided to collaborate on a Pink October collection of pet and human accessories for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A portion of the proceeds of these items are donated to Team Michelle, an organization that supports breast cancer patients, survivors, and research activities! While meeting to discuss our collaboration, Olivia and Paige reflected fondly on their Octobers at Mercy—how they were decked out head to toe in pink for rallies and had their hair cut for donations. As many of the members of the Mercy community were touched by Ms. Galetta, they wanted to share this collaboration with the Mercy community! Hear their podcast episode where Olivia and Paige discuss their small business and collaboration, as well as a link for Olivia’s Etsy shop. Sarah Feller Good ‘16 (SBO President), recently earned her M.A. in Professional Writing through Liberty University, while living and working in Atlanta, GA with her new husband. Sarah has been working as a substitute teacher and soccer coach, as she completed her graduate degree. She has kept in contact with a small group of Mercy friends and has enjoyed growing with them and seeing all of their adventures.

In Loving Memory Jeanne Biernat

In November 2021, Mercy lost two former educators who dedicated so much of their lives to Mercy—Mrs. Rollins and Mrs. Biernat. The celebrations of their lives serve as an important reminder of the gift all those who came before us at Mercy are to the current success we have now. They built sturdy foundations for our programs, and we are incredibly grateful for their tireless work and never ending energy.

Genevieve Rollins

Mrs. Biernat taught at Mercy for 36 years and impacted the lives of not only her students, or as she called them her “Mercy girls,” but all of the faculty, staff, and administrators who had the honor of working with her. Jeanne was a vibrant faculty member in our religion and history departments, and a force to be reckoned with. She made students and colleagues alike laugh with her sense of humor that brought out the beautiful twinkle in her eye every time. Jeanne was known by her students for her animated teaching and her infamous barking that always brought energy and laughter to her classroom. Jeanne was a treasured educator, who impacted generations of students as she not only shared her love for history with everyone but her from-the-heart life advice. Jeanne cared deeply for her students and wanted nothing more than to see them thrive in life. Jeanne will forever be missed, but her spirit will live on forever in our hearts and in the treasured memories of her Mercy students and colleagues who loved her so dearly. What a gift Jeanne was to Catholic education and to our Mercy Community! Mrs. Rollins began teaching physical education and coaching sports at Mercy in 1956; her tenure continued until 1983. She was passionate about girls’ athletics at a time when there was little interest in girls’ sports; she led the Athletics Department at the start of Title IX and oversaw the expansion of the program at Mercy. She was a no-nonsense physical education teacher and founded the Girls Athletic Association (GAA), serving not only as club moderator, teacher, administrator and coach, but also primary cheerleader since very few fans or parents attended games in those days. Genevieve and husband Jerry were fixtures on campus — from building the first athletic office in the former PE Building — now the Diane Grassilli RSM Memorial Aquatic Center — to taking thousands of photos of Mercy athletes and teams throughout the years. They were an important part of the fabric and history of Mercy Athletics. Mrs. Rollins will be fondly remembered by her student athletes, colleagues, family and friends for her Mercy spirit, endless patience, genuine kindness, giving nature and warm smile.
