Multicultural

By Sabrina Avenido ‘22

With the help of the DEI Student Life Committee alongside other passionate students, the SBOs envisioned Multicultural Week to be an immersive experience where students of color could feel a deeper sense of belonging. Ultimately, we wanted to provide the whole Mercy community with the opportunity to appreciate each other’s rich cultures and stories. Food and music remain ways where we as people can connect, so every lunch throughout the week, students representing various ethnic communities would come out to the patio playing their culture’s music and arrange a variety of delicious foods for their peers to enjoy.

Moments of learning were also highlights that came out of the week. For example, the African American community showed us the beauty and power of Black women throughout history in a creative way, giving students the opportunity to collaborate to put together a poster. Additionally, the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community gave takeaway cards with various small AAPI businesses that students could support, especially in light of the pandemic and the xenophobia it produced towards the AAPI community.

For the final day of Multicultural Week, our goal was to educate ourselves and celebrate together as a community. We invited Mercy Alumnae who have found strength and power in their cultural identity to share their journey with us, hoping that our students of color would take that step forward in unapologetically seeking the courage that is within them. Afterwards, we all gathered on the Green to witness and partake in multiple cultural dances and games to culminate the week and share that joy with one another.
