Dear Mercy Community, Welcome Mercy’s New Assistant Heads of School!

Catherine McAuley always believed that “a good beginning is of great importance,” and she couldn’t be more right. As we are starting our 2022-2023 school year, I can’t help but feel excited and hopeful for our own beginning. With two new administrators joining us and new faculty and staff, there is a contagious energy at Mercy that is bringing a renewed sense of joy to our professions and sparking tremendous opportunities through shared ideas.

This is an exciting time for Mercy. Mercy has been ready for new initiatives, new programs, and new ideas, yet the world put us on pause for a bit as priorities shifted these past three years.

The time has finally come for us to vision and develop the Mercy of today; a Mercy that honors the experience we all had, protects our treasured traditions, and imagines new possibilities to ensure a Mercy education remains relevant to the needs of our students and the challenges they face as young women of today.

I look forward to sharing these new programs and plans with you throughout the year. Until then, there is one project I am extremely excited to share with our Mercy community—the time has finally come for us to build the dream of having greater facilities on campus that Mercy students have shared for decades. For years we have explored how to bring a gym to Mercy’s campus, and after working nonstop with various stakeholders we are proud to share our Building the Dream Capital Campaign to fund an Athletic and Student Life Center with a pool expansion. I invite you to learn more about this on the next page.

Being in education I always celebrate two new years each year—one in January and one in August. Regardless of your line of work I hope you join me in celebrating this new year, and I hope you can feel the energy and excitement coming from Mercy. I hope you choose to join us in these very exciting and monumental times. Return to Mercy to walk the hallways. Come to Mercy to join an event. Reach out to support our new programs and goals. Get involved with your alma mater, because we want to know you, and something tells me you would get so much joy in getting to know Mercy again and in giving back to our students the way so many did for us over the years. As our student body officers reminded us every day last year, “The time is now, Mercy!” And what a time it is!

Assistant Head of School for Academics Art Walker has 22 years of experience as an administrator, high school English teacher, and head coach for both men’s and women’s varsity sports. He has a gift for school design, program development, and a passion for integrating DEI work across curriculum. Mr. Walker received his Bachelors of Arts in English & Secondary Education from Coastal Carolina University, Masters in Education, Administration & Supervision from Liberty University, and is currently enrolled at Harvard University’s School of Management and Leadership program.

Jennifer Clifford, Assistant Head of School for Student Life, comes with over 20 years of experience in education as an administrator and science teacher. She has designed female empowerment activities and training to reduce interrelation aggression among young women. Ms. Clifford is committed to creating opportunities for students to bolster their sense of belonging, social and emotional well-being, leadership skills, and motivation. She received her Bachelors of Science in Environmental Science & Avian Ecology from the University of Maine - Machias, and two Masters degrees from Governors State University in Educational Administration and Education, Curriculum, and Instruction.

4 MERCY HIGH SCHOOL, BURLINGAME

I am super excited about joining the Mercy community and look forward to helping our students become the women that will continue to change our world for the better. In addition, I look forward to sharing my passion for educating the whole student by working closely with students, faculty, and staff to ensure a rigorous, student-centric academic experience is in place to prepare our students to be the ‘change agents’ that will help make our world a better place.”

“It's such a thrill to be joining this educational community because I know that I'll be able to see the impact of the Mercy Mission on our girls and the world around them. I want to impart my deep love of learning with the young women of Mercy as they develop their faith, compassion, and commitment to serving others as global citizens. I have no doubt that our scholars will challenge me to continue my own growth and learning along with them through our shared work.”

BUILDING THE DREAM Athletic & Student Life Center

Mercy High School, Burlingame’s future Athletic and Student Life Center inclusive of a gym, pool expansion and student life space is within reach. We are at 50% of the $27 million needed to fund the project.

Who will you become at Mercy?

At Mercy our students are immersed in programs that are intentionally designed to support girls in finding their voices, gaining their confidence, and becoming the best versions of themselves. The focus on encouraging and uplifting the young women of Mercy to exceed their own expectations is at the heart of all we do. At the start of this Admissions season, we asked prospective students to begin to envision, “Who will you become at Mercy?”

We hope you will find in the following interviews with our recent graduates inspiring examples of who students can become when they find themselves known, challenged, and transformed at Mercy.

SAMANTHA SHOEMAKER

JANICE WONG

Class Valedictorian Janice will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a biochemistry major on the pre-medicine path with hopes to become a pediatric surgeon.

In what ways have you grown during your years at Mercy? What skills or qualities did you develop while at Mercy?

I have definitely become more confident in my abilities! The successes that follow the mistakes have shown me that persistence is key and that accomplishments take time to happen. I have acquired my patience and ability to pick myself up from failure in these past four years.

What opportunities did you find at Mercy?

Mercy has been the perfect environment to learn how to be a leader through action and attitude. I had the opportunity to participate in student council, volleyball, Red Cross, UNICEF, and many other activities that not only piqued my interest but also changed how I see myself in the community and encouraged me to contribute in ways I hadn't been used to before.

Can you speak to one of the many Mercy staff members who have impacted your life?

Math Teacher and Department Chair Mrs. Loftus has definitely shown me a level of love that I had never experienced from a teacher before. She has a motherly, selfless, and unconditional love that draws students in and truly makes them feel at home!

Class Salutatorian Samantha will be attending UC Davis to study Animal Science.

What

skills or qualities did you develop while at Mercy?

While at Mercy I have improved in my critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills. The community that Mercy provides has allowed me to become a strong student not only in school but also in life. My curiosity for the world around me pushes me to learn new things and improve the issues I see in the world. In my last four years at Mercy, I have become more confident in my abilities to succeed and socialize with new people.

Can you speak to one of the many Mercy staff members who have impacted your life?

Dr. Bradley has been the most important part of my Mercy education. While taking three of her classes (Honors Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Anatomy and Physiology) and being her intern this year, I can say that she is not only a knowledgeable and effective teacher but she truly cares for every student and makes them shine bright. I will miss her so much next year as her dedication to her students is an inspiration to me.

What is your fondest memory of Mercy?

My fondest memory of Mercy is coming back to school after distance learning. It was amazing to finally see all of my friends and teachers again after so long. Additionally, all of the senior activities that were planned such as senior sunrise, senior assassin, and senior splash made my last year at Mercy as memorable as possible!

8 MERCY HIGH SCHOOL, BURLINGAME

NATALIE DEAN

Robotics Team Captain

Natalie will be attending MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She plans on studying either bioengineering or mechanical engineering with minors in biomedical engineering, chemistry, entrepreneurship and innovation, or women’s and gender studies.

What skills or qualities did you develop while at Mercy?

At Mercy I have become a better student and leader. While I have advanced in academic respects in subjects like language, math, science, and history, I have developed my skills to become better at functioning as a soon-to-be adult member of society. Two of the points that Mercy stresses for its students are self advocacy (which includes communication and responsibility) and compassion.

What opportunities did you find at Mercy?

Some of the greatest opportunities I found at Mercy were the incredible robotics programs that I had the privilege of leading. In my sophomore year, I was part of forming a Mercy only robotics team and encouraged diversity in engineering. We won 2nd Runner Up for the Think Award for adaptability in the face of uncertainty and I was awarded Dean’s List Semi-Finalist in the FIRST Tech Challenge league which is given to a sophomore or junior who displays extraordinary leadership and commitment. During the same period of time, I was learning how to lead another school sponsored robotics team formed by both Mercy and Serra students. I was the youngest Team Captain ever and only the third from Mercy in an almost 15-year history. I outnumbered boys to girls by a ratio of roughly 15:1. That same year, I was named Dean's List Finalist in the FIRST Robotics Competition league, an award given to just 160 students who exemplify the best technical and leadership skills, declaring me one of the top engineering students in the world.

SABRINA AVENIDO

Head of School Award Recipient Sabrina will be attending UC Berkeley majoring in Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies.

In what ways have you grown during your years at Mercy? Whether it’s being a part of Crusader Crew to becoming the president of Filipino Club or SBO Vice President, every moment at Mercy has transformed me from the timid girl I was freshman year to the confident and ambitious young woman I am who is ready to share her gift with the world. At Mercy I was able to deepen my understanding behind servant leadership and learn what it means to trailblaze your own path that works best for you. The constant support and guidance I received throughout my four years allowed me to embrace my identity and the story I carry with love.

What opportunities did you find at Mercy?

Learning how to be a good teammate and team captain inside and outside of the pool and utilizing my identity as a Filipina American to further empower other students of color through my roles as Filipino Club President, executive board member of Students Together Against Racism Club, and SBO Vice President are all opportunities that I have been blessed to find at Mercy. It wasn’t always easy balancing these extracurriculars, but they most definitely played an integral part of my high school experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Future Mercy Girls, who will you become?

THE OAKS SUMMER/FALL 2022 9

Mercy, a leading Catholic all girls’ school on the Peninsula, has graduated a Congress Woman, NASA engineers, Olympians and professional athletes, entrepreneurs, educators, lawyers, health care providers, artists, mothers…the list goes on and on because Mercy students know no boundaries. At Mercy, students find their voice, their passions, their people, and their futures.

Your daughter is more than a statistic or the grades on her transcript. She is a young woman with endless potential. Mercy provides an environment where every girl is challenged to achieve her greatest potential while being surrounded by a community of support, love, and sisterhood. Students enter as Mercy girls and graduate as women of Mercy—ready to thrive in their adult lives.

Study after study affirms that all girls' education provides young women with an advantage in life compared to their peers who attend co-ed schools. All girls’ graduates are 6 times more likely to pursue STEM careers, report greater levels of self-confidence, have greater leadership opportunities, and are more likely to take risks. An all girls’ education rooted in the Mercy mission, which stresses respect and dignity for every individual, provides an environment where all young women can thrive.

Mercy Introduces Pathways Program

The Pathways Program is designed to encourage girls to explore various pathways that reflect their passions.

Each Pathway is uniquely developed to engage students through curriculum, leadership, co-curricular activities, capstone projects, and mentorship opportunities. Pathways support young women who want to dive deeply into various fields of study traditionally dominated by men. For far too long, women have been underrepresented in many fields of study and underpaid when compared to their male counterparts.

Mercy changes that narrative by offering multiple opportunities for students to engage hands-on with curriculum through problem-based thinking and in an environment that is safe to take risks in. As a result, young women thrive as they are transformed through the process of knowing and challenging themselves. The Pathways Program inspires Mercy students to see themselves as leaders, innovators, and changemakers.

ADMISSIONS

Mercy seeks students committed to a challenging academic program, who are also interested in participating in competitive athletics, exploring extensive performing arts options, deepening their spiritual life and developing their leadership skills. Explore areas of interest through our robust electives offerings, including Forensic Science, Psychology, Engineering, Computer Science, Health & Wellness, Dance, Yearbook, and more.

THE OAKS SUMMER/FALL 2022 11

Multicultural

With the help of the DEI Student Life Committee alongside other passionate students, the SBOs envisioned Multicultural Week to be an immersive experience where students of color could feel a deeper sense of belonging. Ultimately, we wanted to provide the whole Mercy community with the opportunity to appreciate each other’s rich cultures and stories. Food and music remain ways where we as people can connect, so every lunch throughout the week, students representing various ethnic communities would come out to the patio playing their culture’s music and arrange a variety of delicious foods for their peers to enjoy.

Moments of learning were also highlights that came out of the week. For example, the African American community showed us the beauty and power of Black women throughout history in a creative way, giving students the opportunity to collaborate to put together a poster. Additionally, the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community gave takeaway cards with various small AAPI businesses that students could support, especially in light of the pandemic and the xenophobia it produced towards the AAPI community.

For the final day of Multicultural Week, our goal was to educate ourselves and celebrate together as a community. We invited Mercy Alumnae who have found strength and power in their cultural identity to share their journey with us, hoping that our students of color would take that step forward in unapologetically seeking the courage that is within them. Afterwards, we all gathered on the Green to witness and partake in multiple cultural dances and games to culminate the week and share that joy with one another.

See how our seniors plan to CHANGE OUR country!

Mercy’s first Social Studies Fair provided seniors with the opportunity to research socio-political, economic, and societal forces of our time. Students acquired new knowledge and skills by providing a chance to perfect research processes, examine issues, make informed decisions, and advocate for a law or issue. Each project was designed to highlight research and conclusions about the study of critical issues and concerns.

Social Studies Fair Showcases Student Research and the Law

Social Studies, Government and Economics Teacher Thomas Wootten directed the fair and shared the student process: “All Mercy seniors spent time thinking about a law that they would like to see implemented or changed. They then conducted research and wrote a three-page paper on why that law is necessary. These papers were sent to either local, state, or federal legislature members with the objective of influencing potential legislation. However, it was also important to draw others to their cause. Thus, each student created a video on their topic to convince others to join them in support of their legislation. Finally, students presented their topic at our social studies fair to not only parents of the Mercy community but government officials as well.” Wootten’s hope was that projects not only taught students strong research skills, but also helped them understand that the United States government is based on the participation of its members. Students came away knowing that their voices matter and gained confidence in sharing their points of view. For full text and sources of the following students research please use this QR code.

Psychologists Are In Need

Summer wrote to Congresswoman Jackie Speier ‘68 about concerns regarding the lack of school psychologists in California and how it is taking a huge toll on the adolescent population. Her hope was to introduce a law which increases the number of psychologists to better the lives of children across the state. Summer shared, “My research on more in-school psychologists truly impacted me in many ways.

Acknowledging the fact that students are in desperate need to seek support is so important, and we must not ignore it. Especially because mental health is decreasing among these children, an increase of in-school psychologists will ensure healthy mindsets of students all around California.” Her research showed that the mental wellness of students in California is a critical concern across the state that must be addressed, as it is just as important as physical health.

Electric Chargers Need to

be Unified

Cassandra wrote to Senator Alex Padilla about a new law that would require a universal, standard charger for all electric vehicles across the United States, because climate change is a pressing, existential crisis that needs to be addressed with bold measures. Requiring auto companies to make a standard, uniform charger for all vehicles would increase the

availability of electric cars. She emphasized that this is necessary for the health and safety of our planet. The EU already requires this, and Tesla already complies with its cars sold in Europe. “This proves that this law is logistically possible but must be a clear mandate in order for companies to abide by it,” according to Cassandra. When asked how her research has impacted her, she said, “Over the course of my research, and talking with others who had done research of their own on the subject of electric vehicles and charging options, my understanding regarding this topic has deepened. My research has inspired me to learn more and keep advocating for solutions to combat the climate crisis.”

The Destruction of Mental Illness in Prisons

Critical Concerns of the Earth and Anti-Racism

Throughout the spring semester, all Mercy students explored the topic of Environmental Racism. In choosing this social justice issue as a unit of focus, Mercy's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee sought to continue our school's commitment to two of the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy — Earth and Anti-Racism. All departments taught lessons through their particular lens, and Campus Ministry made the topic the focus of their annual Justice Liturgy. To culminate the unit, the DEI Committee held an Environmental Racism collaboration designed to help students reflect on the issue, further their learning, and take action. Students chose to attend one of 16 interest sessions. We hope students will continue to engage in this topic and other social justice issues throughout their time at Mercy and beyond.

Social Justice Poster-Making

Equipped with paper, markers, scissors, and glue, 60 students across all grade levels created social justice posters during our Environmental Racism collaboration. The energy was positive as students worked on visually representing issues they cared about. All in all, it was a beautiful culmination to our schoolwide Environmental Racism unit, our academic DEI focus for the semester. The posters were displayed throughout campus.

RINSKÉ

BOLANDER ‘22 Government/Economics

Rinské wrote to Senator Josh Becker about the injustices mentally ill persons face in prisons and what changes can be made to improve environments in California State Prisons. Among incarcerated individuals, there have been reported concerns of mental illnesses in 64% of jails,

in 54% of state prisons, and in 45% of federal prisons (Weltman, Jeremy, 2015). She pointed out that prisons have become conservatories for housing mentally ill patients due to inmates not getting correct treatments. After completing her research, Rinské believes “There is a lack of treatment caused by unsafe environments in prisons that need to be changed with extra medical help, better institutions, and correct rehabilitation.”

Nurturing the Earth

Many low income neighborhoods lack trees and greenery which provide shade, clean the air, and give off oxygen. Though Mercy's campus may look anything but treeless, looks can be deceiving. Our beautiful oak trees suffer from Sudden Oak Death. Many of these elderly trees are slowly succumbing to this disease. For this reason, students watered young oak saplings that replaced them and planted around the Grotto and student garden for upkeep.

Ash Wednesday

The theme of this year’s Ash Wednesday service was the journey of Lent in which students followed a path throughout the perimeter of our campus, and its beauty set the tone for a peaceful and contemplative journey. Led by staff members carrying crosses, students stopped at five stations for various reflections around Lenten themes including the life death cycle present in creation and Lenten sacrifices as opportunities to forward personal relationships with Jesus.

Religion Teacher and Campus Minister Sandy Flaherty noted, “This year’s Ash Wednesday Service was very focused around the theme of Lent as a personal journey. After the service many students commented that Ash Wednesday came alive for them. They understood that the journey of Lent requires time, attention, effort and inward reflection.”

Athletics

“Mercy Athletics is on the rise! This past year Athletics grew all of our programs and our community. Teams and individuals soared to new heights at the CCS level and beyond. Our Volleyball team had a historic run competing at the state level and Olivia Langridge '23 was the CCS Gymnastics Champion in the Vault. I am proud of all our Athletic accomplishments and look forward to building on the momentum of this past year.”

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

Impact of Philanthropy at Mercy

Now entering my 30th year, I can honestly say that serving in this role has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. It is so much more than just asking for money. It is the gift of being able to work with donors and share with them the opportunity to transform the lives of young women through their generosity. When you give to Mercy, you not only impact the present, but you lay a foundation that will be there for future generations. We have an amazing history, an extraordinary present, and a prosperous future.

Giving to Mercy fosters a community with lasting value. Whether that gift is to The Mercy Annual Fund, tuition assistance, a scholarship, or our Capital Campaign to build an Athletic and Student Life Center—the lives of the young women we serve are at the core of everything we do. Your gift, no matter the size, transforms the lives of our students. We are thankful for each of you for your support and generosity. With gratitude, Mary Lund, P ‘06, ‘08 Director of Advancement

SPOTLIGHT

ALUMNA
Olympian Jenise Spiteri ‘10

What motivated you to pursue your profession?

I didn't really know careers in skiing and snowboarding existed until right before senior year. I sent myself to a summer snowboard camp right before the school year started and met professional snowboarders and people who worked for companies in the snow sports industry. Their lifestyle of getting to do this amazing fun thing year round, surrounded by a fun and exciting community infatuated me. I spent senior year secretly reading snowboard magazines during class, dreaming about traveling the world, and being in those magazines myself. Prior to this I had totally other plans for what I wanted to pursue (acting and college in Southern California), and it was really tough choosing between continuing down my planned route or going after my new dream. Ultimately, I felt like that moment in time would be my only chance to try my hand at being a professional snowboarder so I went after it. I wanted to put my full effort and heart into snowboarding so that whether I succeeded or failed, I'd know that I gave it my best shot. I didn't want to have any regrets later in life about not pursuing this crazy dream, so I gave it my all.

What aspect of Mercy High School did you like the most?

I really enjoyed participating in the Tri-School shows. I had the opportunity to perform in all 8 of them while I was at Mercy, and it was a great way to make friends with students from Serra and Notre Dame, as well as make connections with other Mercy students I might not have crossed paths with. I also got elected as Student Body Officer (SBO) Treasurer for senior year, and I had a good experience getting to be hands on with planning and orchestrating so many school rallies, dances, and events. Also going on the Close-Up trip to Washington DC was amazing. Our trip was during Obama's inauguration, so we got to watch that in person which was historic. Looking back, there were so many amazing opportunities while at Mercy, and I'm thankful for all of them.

What advice would you give current Mercy students?

Don't be afraid of going after something different than what people expect. You know your heart and soul the best, so if you feel a passion calling for you, trust yourself and take the chance. Going after your dreams isn't easy—you will face obstacles, and there will be times when there's no one but you in your corner, so you need to be your own biggest fan. Cheer yourself on. Be kind to yourself. And don't let anyone else's opinion of what you're pursuing deter you—at the end of the day it's your life and your responsibility to chase what you want in it.

What is it like to be a woman in your field?

The snowboard industry is predominantly male. Fairly often events have a 10 to 1 ratio of men to women. Entering the snowboard industry was like transferring from Mercy to Serra. I had to deal with some sexism and difficult situations in my early years of snowboarding that taught me how it was important to self advocate and stay strong in my values. I think any woman in a male dominated field needs to be confident in speaking up about what she wants and needs. Recently there's been a push to elevate women more in snow sports and make a more inclusive environment, so women entering the field today have a much different experience than how it was 12 years ago.

Marilyn Martinelli ‘58 was sad to report that Cecilia Hutmacher Surprise ‘58 was called home this past February. Cecilia was the sister of alumna Ursula Hutmacher ‘59. To all her classmates, may we pray for her soul.

Patricia Conway Putkey ‘60 is enjoying retirement in Sun City Lincoln Hills, California. The Conway twins, enjoyed a visit to Yosemite this past March. Pictured left, Mary Conway Zodrow ‘60 and Patricia Conway Putkey.

1961

Carolyn Buhs ‘61 shared that 2021 was the year of her special Diamond Jubilee with Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Carolyn was delighted to celebrate her Jubilee with the Sisters of Notre Dame in Belmont, the SF Archdiocese, and then Mercy Sister and classmate Pat Harney in Redwood City. Afterwards, Carolyn flew to Africa to join her Kenya Unit in the Notre Dame Educational Center in Malava, western Kenya where she is working with Zimbabwean novice Benhildah and two Kenyan postulants, Mary and Vivian, to organize the Resource Center. What a new life!

1962

Maureen Murphy Jenkins ‘62 reported that, “The Jenkins family has just welcomed grandchild number 8!” They are all being “COVID conscious” around the newborn and the toddler siblings, so she is unable to travel to the upcoming Class Reunion. Maureen sends her “warmest greetings” to the Class of 1962!

1966

Marie Henry ‘66 has two poems published in the new anthology Wild Gods: The Ecstatic in Contemporary Poetry and Prose from New Rivers Press. She will also be taking part in a reading by the winners of the International Lawrence Durrell Society’s Poetry Contest. The presentation of winners was originally scheduled for 2020 in Toulouse, France, but was delayed by the pandemic. The reading will now take place online this summer from Toulouse.

1967

After 45 years in their Redwood City home, Jan Pariani Caron ’67 and her husband Joey decided to move to the country where they can relax and be peaceful. Peaceful… YES! Relaxing…no! They are always busy with something—the orchard, vegetable garden, and more. It was a big change but one they wish they had done sooner. In their country life there are no stop lights, all country roads, lots of wonderful people, and only about an hour away. Their kids are older and their four granddaughters are busy high schoolers who are very active in sports. They celebrated their 53rd wedding

anniversary in May. Jan says, “Life is good. My best to all my classmates. It doesn’t seem that long ago we were Mercy Girls!”

Deborah Rodondi ‘70 has been active in the Italian Catholic Federation (ICF), which was founded 98 years ago in San Francisco. This year she is the Grand President of the Central Council of the ICF. She writes a monthly column that appears in the ICF Newspaper The Bollettino and usually contributes recipes. In the June 2022 issue, she mentioned her lasting friendships formed at Mercy like the one with “Sister Joan” (Mercy Sister Joan Marie). They work together one day a week at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary in Daly City.

1978

LIZ BRUNO WAS AHEAD OF HER TIME: Somehow, it seemed fitting. On the evening of June 23, Liz Bruno was inducted into the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. That date happened to coincide precisely with the 50th anniversary of the signing into law of Title IX, the landmark 1972 federal legislation that mandates equal athletic opportunities for girls and women, among other federal requirements. Bruno graduated when the women’s sports boom was barely getting started and she was ahead of her time. She was a pioneer. She was a tall, talented basketball player, an imposing figure among her prep peers,

who wound up later starring at Santa Clara University; her name is still in the school’s record book; her Number 42 has been retired. Bruno, as she recalled during her induction at the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City, competed in her chosen sport well before the nuts and bolts of Title IX’s regulations really kicked in with significant force. Mercy, in those days, had to scramble to field a basketball team, Bruno noted. “There were only a few of us who wanted to play,” she said. (Partial story - excerpt from San Mateo Daily Journal)

1981

Kimberley Garrett Paulus ‘81 and her husband Dan recently returned from Spain where they hiked and backpacked the Camino de Santiago. The pilgrimage was on Kim‘s bucket list for her 50th birthday in 2020, but COVID delayed it until this year. The Camino is an ancient Catholic pilgrimage across Spain that leads the pilgrim to the tomb of Saint James, one of Jesus’ beloved and martyred apostles. Kim and Dan walked every single day over a two week period to complete 200+ miles from León to Santiago de Compostela. It was an adventure of a lifetime and brought them many spiritual graces and blessings. Buen Camino! Pictured above Dan and Kim arrive at the Catedral de Santiago after their 200+ mile journey as pilgrims.

1991

Charlenne Falcis-Stevens ‘91 of Torrey Pines will be honored as the San Diego Section Athletic Director (AD) of the Year. A graduate of UC Davis, Falcis-Stevens is in her 7th year as AD at Torrey Pines and her 16th year at the school. Charlenne also teaches chemistry and is the school’s track coach. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/highschool-preps/story/2022-04-21/three-local-high-schooladministrators-to-be-honored-at-conference

1995

Tessa Manni O’Dowd ‘95 shared a special weekend with Mercy classmates all sharing friendships and the special bond between Mercy girls! This past March, they spent a weekend away in Paso Robles, California. They decided, after 30 years, it was time for another senior trip! All 9 have so many things going on in life, but were determined to make it happen! They committed to a weekend, organized their households

before they left, and reunited as if time had never passed. They had seen each other over the years with dinners here and there, but this weekend reminded them of how they can just pick up right where they left off. Tessa said, “It doesn’t matter how much time goes by, the bond we all share is just so strong. It’s a special bond that cannot be replaced—nurturing, no place for pretending, and has everyone’s full support and trust. Thank you Mercy for giving us this beautiful gift of friendship!”

1996

Jocelyne Takatsuno ‘96 enjoyed bringing her daughters to Mercy and showing them the locker she shared with Christina Beck Drogin ‘96 for all four years. They also visited Señora Castillo’s (Gamma Lulu’s) class. The Mercy generational ties continue —Once a Mercy Girl, always a Mercy Girl!

1999

Evita Rapadas Isleta ‘99 recently collaborated with the investigative and digital innovation teams at KNTV/NBC Bay Area as a video editor. She cut an entire 80-minute documentary that won a 2022 duPont-Columbia

Award. A recent documentary “The Mom’s of Magnolia Street” also won an esteemed Peabody Award that honors excellence in broadcast and digital journalism in the public service. Work aside, Evita is currently enjoying 12 years of marriage to husband Phil and playing lots of Uno with 8-year-old daughter Penelope. She believes Mercy helped cultivate the spirit of friendship, learning, travel and adventure in her—values that continue guiding her decisions every day. The sisterhood at Mercy is SO REAL and still alive in her life, especially in her closest friendships—”Alma Mater, oak-clad acres, thee we hail in song!”

2004

Maureen Carey Maleki ‘04 married Cyrus Maleki just last month in Morgan Hill, California! The wedding was a perfect day.

Maureen’s sisters Gina Carey Herrera ‘90 and Megan Carey ‘95 served as maid of honor and officiant, respectively, and close friend Jamila Sinlao Zanette ‘04 was also a bridesmaid.

2006

Chef Monique Lopez Feybesse ‘06 is the co-owner of Tarts de Feybesse, a pastry business that has garnered attention in the Bay Area for its homage to traditional French patisseries in Paris that uses modern technique and gorgeous aesthetics. Though she mostly dabbles in the sweet world, she presently has an extensive savory experience in starred fine dining restaurants in San Francisco, New York, Copenhagen, and Paris. Monique credits her evolving style of cuisine to French and Filipino influences along with classic elements learned throughout her career. She is also a proud mother. While always on her feet as a chef, she is still constantly fighting a laundry battle at home. In 2022, she was one of the chef contestants on “Bravo’s Top Chef” (Season 19) in Houston.

2010

Jenise Spiteri ’10 competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in Snowboarding Halfpipe and was the flag bearer for Malta in the opening ceremonies. See the Alumna Spotlight on Jenise on page 40.
