for Mercy SF Transfer Students

Going to Mercy San Francisco, I have seen my own personal growth in my 3 years here. I can genuinely and wholeheartedly say that I am the person I am today because of Mercy. Before Mercy, I was unsure of myself and the decisions I made. I constantly doubted myself and was completely dependent on others. Now, I see myself as a strong, intelligent, independent person. I am confident in the things I say and the choices I make. Mercy helped me find my voice and I hope to continue my journey in a Mercy education at Mercy Burlingame.

MISSION STATEMENT We, the community of Mercy High School, Burlingame, a Catholic College Preparatory school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, educate young women of diverse religious, ethnic, social and economic backgrounds to reverence and foster the dignity of each human person; to create a community of hospitality; to lead with compassion; to strive for excellence; and to proclaim Gospel values in word and deed.

In January 2020 when Mercy High School San Francisco announced it would close in June 2020, the Mercy High School Burlingame Board of Directors made a commitment to accept Mercy San Francisco transfer students who had a desire to continue in their Mercy education. We are proud to have 39 Mercy San Francisco transfer students at Mercy Burlingame in Classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023. In 2005, we established our Making A Difference Scholarship Program and Benefit to raise the additional funds necessary to ensure that all qualified applicants, who dream of becoming a Mercy education are afforded that opportunity. Making A Difference has provided over $3 million over the past 16 years to students, who need our support to benefit from a Mercy education. This year, we have created a special fund within Making A Difference for the Mercy San Francisco transfer students. For the 2020-21 school year, we have awarded $437,888 in financial assistance to these young women. As of October 15, 2020, we have raised $161,470 and are seeking sponsors to help us raise the remaining $276,418. We are hoping you might be interested in helping us, or might know of others who might join in supporting these young women. On the following pages, we have highlighted 16 of these students. Mercy High School San Francisco had a profound impact on their development as young women, and it is evident by their desire to continue with a Mercy education that each truly cherishes the values of a Catholic Mercy education. There is no doubt that these young women will go out and make their mark on the world–bringing the Mercy mission into all they accomplish. Your support would be transformational for these young women! We would welcome the opportunity to speak with you if you would like to learn more about how the Mercy SF girls are doing in their transition to Mercy Burlingame and how you can support them, or if you know anyone who might be interested in helping support Making A Difference for Mercy SF Transfer students. We appreciate your consideration of this request. Sincerely,

Natalie Cirigliano Brosnan ‘02, Ed.D. Head of School

My God, I am yours for time and eternity. Teach me to cast myself entirely into the arms of your loving Providence with a lively, unlimited confidence in your compassionate, tender pity. Grant, O most merciful Redeemer, that whatever you ordain or permit may be acceptable to me. Take from my heart all painful anxiety; let nothing sadden me but sin, nothing delight me but the hope of coming to the possession of You, my God and my all, in your everlasting kingdom. Amen.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE is our annual umbrella fundraising program for tuition assistance for all of our students. Our 2020-2021 fundraising goal is $793,800 of which $291,418 is to support our Mercy San Francisco transfer students. In order to further differentiate this unique need, we have created this proposal which targets the specific needs of our Mercy SF transfer students. All funds donated will be designated solely for these transfer students. The tuition assistance needs of our Mercy San Francisco students totals $438,000. Of this need, we have raised $146,470; we are continuing outreach to donors to raise the remaining $291,418. This year, the total tuition assistance awarded to all students at Mercy Burlingame is $1,975,939.

Tuition Assistance Process * The application process for financial aid is fair and confidential. It is not associated with the Admissions process in any way, and the Admissions Committee has no knowledge of who is applying for financial assistance. Aid assessments are done by TADS, a specialized, outside firm. All families must submit a TADS application in order to be considered for financial aid. Awards are made based on a family’s demonstrated need and the availability of school funds. The amount noted as “Tuition Assistance” is the amount that has been awarded by Mercy HS Burlingame for the FY 21 school year.

*When Mercy San Francisco’s closure was announced in January, the Mercy High School, Burlingame Board of Directors approved support to Mercy San Francisco transfer students to honor the sisterhood of our shared mission.

my Mercy community has been one of the best decisions I’ve made and has shaped me into who I am today. By joining all these extracurriculars and leadership positions I have been able to grow and get out of my comfort zone. I have been able to slowly find my voice and speak out without hesitation. I have been able to form relationships with incredible people and be exposed to many opportunities that I know I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else. I have learned that a Mercy community is a sisterhood that allows you to be yourself without judgment and gives you room to explore. Next year I would like to bring all that I’ve learned through the past three years to Mercy Burlingame. I see myself joining clubs I might have never thought of and joining the stage crew. This will allow me to become closer to my new Mercy sisters and form new bonds, even if it is for a short period of time. Academically, I will challenge myself with the classes I choose to take and be open to forming new relationships with my teachers. I see myself trying classes that aren’t offered at Mercy SF, like Forensics and Photography.

I attended the Boys and Girls Club every day from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Although it started off as after school care it became a second family for me. Every time I return, I see myself in the children and teens as I was once one of them. The Boys and Girls Club is a place that opened a world of possibilities for me. Through the Clubhouse, I got insight into colleges, summer volunteer opportunities, and got to know the meaning of what it is to be in a community filled with love similarly to Mercy.

impact on me was an internship I received through my scholarship program, Achieve. In the summer of 2019, I worked at BRIDGE Housing, which is a non-profit organization that develops affordable housing for low income families. My internship at BRIDGE helped me to grow and get out of my comfort zone from yelling “five minutes till places” at the actors, to becoming Assistant Stage Manager. What I love about tech crew the most are the relationships I have formed. Tech crew can be difficult due to the long hours of building the sets and basically living at school during tech week. What makes it all worth it is spending time with people who I have become close to. Not only my peers but our tech directors. Tech crew has become a safe place for me to be able to share whatever is on my mind and not be judged. Anyone can come in after having a bad day and be able to express how they feel and in the end be cheered up. I have become close to my history teacher, who is also one of our tech directors. Despite getting extra help in History, I have an adult who I know I can trust and get advice from. Thinking about how important the tech crew has become to me is one of the reasons why it is so hard to come to terms with leaving Mercy. Words can’t describe how much love I have for everyone in the tech crew and how happy I am I decided to join it.

the incredible impact that Mercy SF has had on me. The Mercy SF community is like no other that I've ever experienced. Mercy has been like another home, even sometimes one I don't want to leave right after school. When I got the news that Mercy was going to close, I was in utter disbelief. It didn't truly hit me how painful this was going to be until I was in school that following Monday with all my classmates and teachers. This safe place for me is being yanked from my arms. I guess what I want to convey to you is how important my Mercy SF education has been to me because I feel that since you are going to be accepting a bunch of transfer students from Mercy SF, you should know what/ where I'm coming from and try to have a sense of how difficult it is going to be for me. I appreciate you taking the time to read this. I'll finish this by saying Mercy as a whole, including Mercy B, is very important and close to my heart. I hope to graduate as a Mercy girl, which is the closest I'll get to graduating as a Mercy SF girl.

Personal Statement: I’m interested in Mercy B because of its AMES program. It is very similar to Mercy SF’s MAP program, which I have been a part of for the last 2 years and where I’ve learned a great deal. I wish to continue to expand on my study skills that will enable me to thrive in high school and which I will use in college. Ames will make my transition from Mercy SF to Mercy B a lot less scary because I will know that I can get support for my academic needs. Not all other schools have this type of program and it is extremely important that I continue to get support for my needs. Plus, I like to be with other students so we can help each other. (AMES - Academic Mentoring Eduational Support Program for students with designated learning differences.)

outside of school was an internship I did at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This internship was provided to me through the Achieve Program (a scholarship program that I work very hard with). I interned for the museum’s marketing department where I assisted in making content for their Instagram page. I also made a documentary about my time there. As I was interning at the museum, I watched the marketing team work together to collaborate with organizations and execute brand deals. At the time, the department was working with Costco to sell museum tickets for the Andy Warhol Exhibition, and I was assigned to help with this collaboration. The team and I packaged over seven thousand tickets to sell at Costco. This experience was important to me because it taught me how to problem solve and be independent. There were times where my supervisor was busy at a meeting and a program of mine stopped working, but this didn’t stop me from learning how to fix things myself. I also learned how to ask other people for help because I learned that the department was a community. Teamwork played a big part in my time at SFMOMA and it definitely helped me grow as a young woman.

I was involved in a program known as Cardinal Education Scholars, which was a tutoring program for low-class families in my school district. We worked on test prep and other school subjects that would help us get into high schools, private high schools specifically. As a 7th grader, I had never heard of a private school or could never imagine myself at one. This program made us work extremely hard and it was worth every long day we had. Since my class was the first cohort, I was able to participate in tutoring the students that came after us. We did high school interview prep with staff of the program, which honestly was the best practice for me due to how shy I was in 8th grade. What CES did for me and my community was extreme and is a part of my life that I will never forget.

My job included working the front desk, checking kids and their parents in, instructing children learning how to swim, ages 5-15, levels 1-6, in and out of the pool. This experience is important to me because it helped me develop leadership skills and helped me develop my love for swimming. Although spending my summer in a cold pool at 8 a.m. wasn’t always my favorite activity, I appreciate this experience because it taught me many important life skills. I am confident in the things I say and the choices I make. Mercy helped me find my voice and I hope to continue my journey in a Mercy education at Mercy Burlingame.

Personal Statement: I would love to keep on developing my art skills in Mercy Burlingame. I would want to improve on my English skills as well as my other academics at Mercy next year, and I strongly believe that Mercy can provide me the excellent assistance that I need with all my school work. I have won a few awards in the art field both in and outside of school, and I have been volunteering for homework and arts and crafts help in my local library ever since sophomore year. I volunteered at the SF food bank during my sophomore summer break. My experience there truly demonstrated to me that everyone has the power to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others in the community. This experience has also made me become more grateful for the basic things that I can get so effortlessly while some people can’t, it has impacted me to form a compassion and sense of empathy that I had never known before and I am grateful for that.

Without art I would only be focusing on academics and that could burn my brain out. It helps me to use my creativity very often and to show my ideas to the world. Personal Statement: My goal is to become an immigration lawyer to help families with their legal matters. I know I must work hard to pursue my dreams. If given the opportunity to attend Mercy Burlingame, I want to take a variety of classes like forensics to develop the skills I need to come closer to my goal of becoming an immigration lawyer. Altar serving is very important to me. I am showing my Faith by participating in the celebration of God every Sunday. Altar serving is important because it brings my community together. I am serving God and thanking him for all he gives me during the week. I am being a role-model to the youth in my community and sharing with them the importance of having God at the center of our lives. I see myself as a part of the Mercy community by excelling in my studies, demonstrating school spirit by attending and participating in school events. extracurricular activity that is very important to me, because I am a very fortunate person and am lucky to be given the opportunities I have and understand that not everyone relates. With this understanding I make sure to volunteer around San Francisco or wherever I am to give back to the community and because it makes people’s days much better. I am very passionate about this and no matter what I am doing to help, I always try to do my very best at the task I am given. I love to volunteer because seeing the people I am able to help is the best reward I can ask for. Getting to be included in the Mercy community is something I am very determined to be a part of and I know that I will do my very best to be a great addition to the sisterhood. Whatever I am passionate about, I take very seriously including my strong interest in joining the medical field. I participated in two summer programs over the past two summers that gave me the chance to practice different medical professions at college campuses including University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Johns Hopkins University. With this interest I am sure that at Mercy Burlingame, I will be heavily supported for my interests.

continuing my career as an actress and a musician, and to do well academically. One extra-curricular activity I’ve had outside of school is theater. Last year’s spring musical was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. I was a swing role, which means that as a freshman I had to learn two complete roles, which included lines, choreography, and music. It was stressful, but I feel that I grew as a performer. I spent nights studying my lines, and I listened to the recording of my music every chance I got. As much as that was one of the worst shows I’ve ever been in, I learned a lot, and the bonds I made with my castmates only became stronger. That being said, it makes this year’s musical all the more saddening. Mom wrote: One of my favorite things about Ellie is that she is just as comfortable with adults as with her peers. She has the ability not to let the actions of others change the person she chooses to be. She is well spoken and not afraid to be an individual. I think my favorite thing about my daughter is her compassion she will go hungry to feed a friend in need, she will share all that she has and all that she is to help others. It’s nice to see that in this day and age of materialistic teenagers, she can be so giving and to do so freely.
