FROM OUR STUDENT BODY OFFICERS

This year, we intend to lead and inspire the community in a positive direction with our theme, Be The Change. Our inspiration is Mahatma Gandhi’s quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”, which we interpret as striving to be a generation that challenges societal standards by staying true to our beliefs. We want to embrace diversity, celebrate a holistic definition of beauty, and further develop our supportive Mercy community and strong sisterhood.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

In this issue of the Oaks you will meet alumnae, current students, and faculty who embody all the traits exhibited by those early pioneering Sisters. We honor their unique achievements! As we celebrate this 175th anniversary, may we all strive to follow in the footsteps of Mother Frances and Baptist Russell, and bring Mercy to our world, our country, and our communities.

FALL 2018 - TABLE OF CONTENTS 12 18 This is a very special year for the Sisters of Mercy. In 1843 - 175 years ago - Mother Frances Xavier Warde arrived in Pittsburgh, PA, founding of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Nearly 11 years later, 25-year old Sister Mary Baptist Russell led eight Sisters west. In 1854 they disembarked from a steamship in San Francisco to begin their ministry in the Bay Area. They established hospitals and opened schools from the Peninsula to Sacramento. When we talk to our girls about the early days of the Sisters of Mercy, we find ourselves focusing on the traits the Sisters embodied: care, compassion, action, persistence, and resilience. Our girls excel in academics, community service, athletics, and other activities because of the persistence, compassion, and resilience that they possess.

Career Day

Last spring Mercy welcomed alumnae, parents, and friends of Mercy for Career Day 2018!

We had representation in a wide variety of fields, from healthcare and law enforcement to technology and financial management. The professionals hosted roundtables with three different student groups, to allow students to engage in a range of career discussions.

Topics included day-to-day activities of the job, including highlights and hardships of their field and specific roles. They discussed paths to get into a certain field, and the personal strengths, passion, and skills required to succeed. The roundtables wrapped up with insider advice for interested students and Q&A. We are so grateful to our community for participating and exposing Mercy students to different potential career paths!

Students Speak Out Against Gun Violence

In March, Mercy students joined thousands across the country in speaking out against gun violence.

In response to student requests for a walkout, and as part of our mission as a Mercy school committed to the Sisters of Mercy's Critical Concern of Nonviolence, students, faculty, and family participated in a learn-in and walk-out. To educate themselves, raise awareness, and encourage action, students and faculty developed a program that incorporated all perspectives on topics such as the 2nd Amendment, rights of hunters, gun control, police safety, causes of violence, and more. The March began in the Mansion courtyard, proceeded past Marian Oaks for encouragement from the Sisters, and on to El Camino Real where participants observed a moment of silence for the victims of the Parkland shooting. Hundreds of cars honked their support as they passed.

Participation in the march was optional, and some students and faculty stayed to write letters to elected officials to voice their opinions. The activities and advocacy of March 14th were important supplements to classroom instruction, and honor the Sisters of Mercy’s continued legacy of social and political activism.

Last year, the office of Student Life worked hard to coordinate a Speaker Series for our parents and community members.

We consider parents and guardians our partners in education, and wanted to fulfill requests for resources and best practices. We hosted an education series, with a workshop in the winter, and panel discussion in the spring. The program was a successful pilot that we hope to build on!

OVERCOMING OVERWHELM: Supporting the Future of Our Youth

Mercy teamed up with Fusion Academy to host a panel discussion with mental health and community education professionals about the pressures students face, and how we can help counteract the effects. Attendees learned about the latest research and techniques to address overwhelm, ‘interrupt’ patterns of behavior, and build resilience in the face of academic and social pressures. Parents also received valuable advice on how to model healthy skill sets for youth. Panelists: psychotherapists and authors Lee Daniel Kravetz, LMFT, and Carol Langlois, PhD, and community engagement director Mary Hofstedt, Ed.M. Not pictured, Moderator Charlene Margot, M.A., a parent and community education advocate.

Speaker Series Wellness Week

Twice a year before exams, Mercy hosts Wellness Week - supported by the Counseling Department, organized and led by students.

Wellness Week was created as a way to help address high stress levels before finals, and usually consists of fun ways for students to relax during lunches and/or Collaboration, coupled with an advisory lesson designed to help them prepare mentally, physically, and emotionally for their finals. All the activities are student-selected, so they reflect ways the girls prefer to unwind. Last spring, activities chosen by the Wellness Week Planning Committee included:

• A “Self-Care Fair” with face painting, Mandala coloring, and making lanyards, lavender sachets, spa masks, and slime

• The “Take-What-You-Need Wall”, where students created thoughtful, positive, post-it notes to share with one another

• A Friday afternoon ice cream social on the green

• Puppy play day, where faculty brought their dogs for students to cuddle and play with during lunch and break time

Advisory lessons included reminders about good study skills and strategies, as well as suggestions for managing finals-related stress. Many students struggle to make time for self-care around finals, so it is very helpful to provide opportunities for fun and relaxation on campus!

CYNTHIA KLEIN: Ally Parenting

Cynthia Klein led a workshop on transforming conflict into cooperation, and offered solutions and strategies while humorously sharing her own experiences. Her Ally Parenting philosophy empowers parents to lead by example, and provides a concrete and hope-filled path to turn family conflicts into effective, collaborative discussions.

CREATIVE ENRICHMENT

Mercy offers diverse opportunities for experiential learning in visual and performing arts (VPA). Students are fully immersed in their art at a high level, with many Mercy classes modeled after college programs to go beyond mastering the techniques of their chosen medium. Students are challenged to be active participants in expression and grow in their artistry. In the performing arts, they learn to work together, collaborate, and depend on one another in ensemble pieces. Last spring, the Mercy community enjoyed culminating concerts, performances, and shows that demonstratred students’ growth!

Mission & SERVICE

With a focus on reflection and faith formation, Mercy’s Religion classes are relational and growth-oriented. Over four years, each lesson builds off the previous one - freshmen and sophomores develop understanding of the Catholic foundation, juniors build on their personal moral framework, and seniors look outward through Service Learning and reflection on a societal level. At Mercy we welcome students with differing religious beliefs and traditions, which enliven our conversations and give students a broader world-view, leading to a greater understanding of others.

SPRING BREAK IMMERSION TRIP

The Spring Break immersion trip to Sacramento, Chico, and Orland was an engaging, informative success! They visited with students at Leataate Floyd Elementary's after-school program sponsored by Mercy Housing. The program provides a safe place for at-risk youth, and helps them improve reading skills to position themselves for success. They toured Loaves and Fishes, an extensive compound and program providing social services to meet the needs of the homeless, and then harvested asparagus at a community supported agriculture farm in Chico. Last, they helped with major projects at Farm Sanctuary whose mission is to rescue farm animals and to educate the public on the inhumane treatment in many commercial farms. After the hard work was completed, students had fun playing with the goats in the open field.

LA YOUTH DAY

Ms. Simonetti and Ms. Flaherty have been taking students to the LA Youth Day for over seven years. This trip gives Mercy students an opportunity to express their faith with 14,000 other students from all over the country. They spend the day listening to presentations about living as a young woman of faith and being a leader in their community. They also get to attend a youth-led mass with the Archbishop of Los Angeles presiding.

10 MERCY HIGH SCHOOL BURLINGAME MISSION

PRODIGAL SON PROJECT

In Religion I freshmen students completed a reflection and artistic interpretation of the well-known parable. They considered the meaning and what lessons they got from the story, and then created modern and varied representations of how the message might be illustrated in their own lives.

WOMEN SAINTS TED TALKS

For a major project in Religion II, students created a TED-style presentation to feature a woman saint. A key component of the presentation was to depict the conversion story of their chosen saint in a comic strip. The class used apps such as Comics Head to help make their comics, which made it fun and less intimidating for students to create artful presentations! Image of St. Catherine of Siena by Madison Landaverde ‘20, Gabriella Martinez ‘20.

SERVICE LEARNING CLASS

In senior year, Mercy offers a unique opportunity for students to go out into the Burlingame/San Mateo community once a week and facilitate learning off campus during the school day. The Service Learning Class is a year-long Religion course that combines essential tenets of Catholic social teachings and the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns. In the beginning of the school year, students choose a site - a senior center, nursery or elementary school - that they visit weekly for the duration of the school year. The class is unique in its level of commitment, and teaches perseverance and dedication as students become known as members of their new organization’s community.

At the end of the year, students reflect on their experiences and what the organization offers to the community. Groups create a movie trailer designed to ‘sell’ other students on volunteering for their site. They are encouraged to think critically about organizational strengths and challenges, and if their placement was a good fit.

Sandy Flaherty, Mercy’s Director of Catholic Identity and Religious Studies teacher, has published an informative and guiding resource for families considering a Catholic education. Why Choose Catholic Education? is an editorial designed to educate parents on how Catholic education is distinct from other learning environments. It includes a summary of the theological foundation of Catholic identity and educational principles within a Catholic school community, as well as examples of how our Catholic theological framework at Mercy Burlingame provides a holistic, student-centered, values-based, and academically driven education for young people.

Intentionally brief and summative, Ms. Flaherty’s editorial is a high-level view of the benefits of a Catholic education, and, more specifically, a Mercy education. She relates complex concepts to identifiable practices at Mercy Burlingame to illustrate how the theoretical is put into action. Not simply a resource for parents, Why Choose Catholic Education? describes the Mission that all on campus work toward every day. It illustrates how a Catholic, faith-based education offers a good deal more than a diploma; it offers vision, direction, and purpose. We invite you to read it on the Mercy website at www.mercyhsb.com/faith-service

INNOVATION

AT MERCY

Kirk Demlinger (Algebra)

‘pre-loads’ lessons using the video platform

EDpuzzle - his students watch the lecture as homework and then complete the traditional ‘homework’ together in class. EDpuzzle gives him analytics on the students’ progress on the video lesson, which helps him to hold them accountable for their learning,

Mercy is committed to the growth of our teachersinvesting significant time, energy, and financial resources into professional development in order to stay closely connected to educational best practices. Faculty are challenged to continuously learn, improve, and develop innovative ways to engage our students!

Three years ago, Mercy made its largest investment in professional learning by retaining Knowing Technologies (KT), an EdTech consulting company that provides training on strategic technology implementation. KT works one-on-one with individual teachers to improve their comfort, confidence, and overall fluency with technology

use and integration. This intensive, individualized training has changed the landscape of instruction at Mercy, so that teachers become coaches and students become empowered learners. In addition, Mercy Administration hosts interdisciplinary faculty sessions and encourages peer teaching to promote a culture of collaboration.

This year, Mercy founded an Instructional Innovation Team that now consists of 7 faculty members who engage in weekly planning sessions with KT. The individuals on the Team are working to a point where they can teach their colleagues and become models of innovation themselves. Ultimately, the goal is to empower teachers to be passionate about their subjects and tools, and to share their passion in a way that elicits dynamic student outcomes.

Importantly, technology itself is not the focus of innovation at Mercy. The objective is to understand the benefits that technology can provide to the students, so that students can lead and own their learning. Mercy’s innovation goals coincide with a larger education trend permeating the industry of reimagining what teaching looks like -- where learning and classrooms are studentcentered, and teachers leverage strategies and digital tools to further engage students and deepen their learning. Mercy faculty are actively experimenting and innovating, paving the way in the EdTech space to redesign the learning experience.

Tom Wootten (Social Studies) is using Touchcast for student videos, integrating green screen technology for multimedia presentations. In his Propaganda project, students learn about communication techniques and employing core tenets of persuasion theory in order to achieve a desired outcome. They analyze how various propaganda techniques are used to influence their behavior, and how social media was used in the 2016 election to influence prospective voters.

Studentviewoftheassessmentdashboard

Kirsten McKay (English) uses the the review platform Writable to break down essays prompts into approachable tasks for students. The exercise makes essay-writing less intimidating, and allows her students to provide feedback to each other. The platform also incorporates self review which helps improve writing skills. This editing process allows students to reflect on their work in real time, and make adjustments that they might not have caught themselves.

The Memory Project

For the last nine years, students in Honors Art III have participated in the Memory Project - a nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create portraits for youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges. This year the portraits were delivered to children in Puerto Rico, a gesture of support after enduring Hurricane Maria. The intention for the portraits is to make the children feel valued and important, to know that people care about their well being and acknowledge their resilience. For the Mercy students, it is an opportunity to creatively gain global awareness and practice kindness.

The Memory Project sends photographs and Mercy students paint portraits from the photos. They learned about Puerto Rico’s history and culture, and about the devastation inflicted by Hurricane Maria. Each Mercy student wrote a short note to their portrait recipient (in Spanish) to convey their support and encouragement.

Windows & Mirrors BOOK CLUB

In the spring, Sarah Murphy, Library Resources Coordinator, organized the Windows and Mirrors Book Club! A summer reading program for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, it was established to encourage reading for fun. Faculty and staff selected books that either mean something special to them, or that they had been looking forward to reading, and led a book club meeting in August. The books reflected the Club’s theme of being a window into another person's life, or a mirror of your own life, and were varied in topic, genre, style and even presentation - including a couple of graphic novels too! The discussions were spirited and covered a lot of ground. One of our book groups even had the author come to visit. The girls were interested to read about other people's lives, and enjoyed reading for the fun of it!

A fond farewell

BELOVED TEACHERS RETIRE

Liz Barthe was the voice of our French program for over 30 years prior to her retirement. She lead many trips to the Basque Country of France with excursions to Paris. Loved by her students and colleagues, Liz has been the World Languages Department chair, a calm and practical presence on Academic Council and a devotee of very dark roast coffee.

Patsy Ohata brought American Sign Language to the forefront at Mercy. In her 23 years, she took ASL beyond the classroom to become a presence at Baccalaureate Mass, the Tools for Schools summer classes, and many other events, introducing a vital new language at Mercy. Her choreography of many ASL performances showcased her past experience as a dancer.

Susan Roughgarden taught History for 13 years at Mercy. Her love of the subject made her classes special, particularly sharing her own experiences of growing up in the Washington DC area. Susan was the moderator for the Equality Club, helping the students to find their voices and become advocates for their beliefs. She also moderated the Junior Statesmen of America, encouraging Mercy girls to become involved in the public arena and hone their skills as effective speakers and activists.

MERCY LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Members of the SBO Leadership team took a trip to Philadelphia to attend a Mercy Leadership Conference. Thirteen different Mercy schools from across the country attended, and two schools came all the way from Ireland! The girls focused on learning and building their personal leadership styles. They made friends and were able to share ideas for student events and fundraisers.

“We learned that though every Mercy School works differently, they always come back and connect to the mission of Catherine McAuley.” -Cate Rocheleau ‘19, SBO Vice President

FRANCE

French language students took a summer trip to France to immerse themselves in the language and culture. They stayed with host families in the countryside, where they practiced their French and experienced the local way of life. Students also spent time in Paris visiting the historical and cultural sites, and even got to watch the semi-finals of the World Cup - which France went on to win!

“Our time spent in Basque Country was full of adventures and learning. Whether we were hiking the Pyrenees Mountains, traversing the FranceSpain border to view the picturesque Bayfront of San Sebastián, or watching the sunset on the Grande Plage of Biarritz, each moment was exciting and each scene was beautiful.” ~ Emerson Dawes, ‘19

“I feel very fortunate that I got to share this experience with my classmates. I am happy I got to discover different cultural activities and learn the history of the area and the peoples’ way of life.” ~ Ellen Lahey, ‘19

IMMERSION TRIP TO CHICAGO

Mercy students went on a service trip to Misericordia in Chicago with Ms. Connolly and Mr. Diaz, where they worked alongside the residents baking, making art, folding laundry, and other daily activities. This was a very moving and transformational experience for the students. They came to view people with intellectual disabilities with compassion, and as people filled with joy and hope like themselves. The students also bonded with each other through daily reflections, touring the sites of Chicago, and sharing meals together. This was an unforgettable learning experience by all.

ARTS TRIP

The VPA Department’s educational, fun-filled, two-week European excursion isn’t limited to any class, subject, or discipline. The twenty three students and three chaperones learned about culture, history, the arts, Catholicism, and fashion through three countries!

The trip started in London where they took a sightseeing tour of the city, and explored Windsor Castle to learn about the area’s historical significance and its role in the British Crown. They took in the arts, attending a performance of Dreamgirls in the West End (London’s version of Broadway), and took a Harry Potter tour to see where the literary series came to life on the big screen.

In Paris, they saw the major sights from a boat tour on the Seine River. They learned about France’s rich history of art and architecture at the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral, and enjoyed the centuries-old sculptures and paintings and beautiful gardens of Versailles. The delicious French food, especially the delicate croissants and pastries, was a highlight of the trip!

In Italy, the group experienced the unique city of Venice, exploring the waterways with a gondola ride and touring St. Mark’s and the Palace. Rome was an especially significant stop - they toured the Vatican museums, viewed the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel, and visited St. Peters where they saw the entombments of the great Popes. They toured the Colosseum and the old Roman temple ruins, learning their history and significance in the daily life of ancient Romans. The trip ended on the southern coast of Italy in Sorrento, with vistas from Mount Vesuvius to the island of Capri.

“This experience is meant to be a trip of a lifetime for many of the girls to see differences in culture, touch the architecture that they have only seen in books, visit the roots of the Catholic church, and create new friendship with other Mercy girls that they didn’t really know before.”

Strategic Planning

How, in the next 5 years, can we thrive as a school with strong academic excellence and living our mission?

This was our focus question as we began a missionoriented strategic planning process for Mercy’s future. While we would study academics, activities, athletics, admission, fundraising, and many more topics, our primary focus was how we would keep our mission, our core values, and our Mercy heritage front and center.

We wanted the strategic plan to be action-oriented, not a long study that would end up in a binder, dusty on a bookshelf. We wanted to involve all Mercy constituencies – alumnae, faculty, staff, parents and students – who could help to develop practical plans to benefit the students and the school.

We engaged the Center for Strategic Facilitation, a group known for assisting in the development of plans that are participatory and results-oriented. The process was lead by a Design Team consisting of Head of School - Karen Hanrahan, Assistant Head of School for Academics - Lauren Conklin, Assistant Head of School for Student Life - Claire Rietmann-Grout ’04, along with leaders from the Center for Strategic Facilitation. Over 40 volunteers from all Mercy constituencies agreed to be part of this 6-month long process.

The Process

A Launch Meeting opened the planning process, in which the group got to know one another and each person’s relationship with Mercy. We looked at key indicators that have led to Mercy’s successes and determined what we learned from our past that could help us positively address our future needs.

The next step was Practical Visioning. We looked at trends, paradigms, and approaches emerging in the field of education, and explored what we wanted in see in place at Mercy High School in 2022. The planning group looked at everything from holistic, student-centered education and our facilities, to career exploration and creating the next generation of empowered women leaders.

We also looked at the roadblocks and contradictions that could potentially prevent us from achieving our 2022 vision. The group examined stakeholder interests and expectations, competing priorities, disparate objectives, logistical challenges, and much more. The discussions were thorough, open, and honest.

We then began to look at Strategic Directions, answering the question, “What innovative, substantial actions will move us toward our vision?” A list of four key areas began to emerge.

Community Input

After the key Strategic Directions were developed by the Strategic Planning Committee it was time to get input from outside the group. Faculty and staff spent time in a faculty meeting reacting to the Directions and making suggestions. During a collaboration period, we invited the students to share their thoughts - they filled every table in the cafeteria to look at the committee’s ideas and to share their own about the future of Mercy. On a Saturday morning we invited parents, alumnae, and Sisters of Mercy to gather and share their ideas. The input from all these meetings encouraged us to change some of the Strategic Directions and refine others.

Outcomes

After much discussion, deliberation, and hard work by all members of the Strategic Planning Committee, the following Strategic Directions were made part of the Mercy Strategic Plan:

Engaging All Stakeholders

Looking at how we can reach out to and collaborate with each of our stakeholder groups in the most effective ways possible. The Stakeholder groups include parents, alumnae, parents of alumnae, Sisters of Mercy, the Burlingame community, schools and parishes and the Greater Bay Area Community.

In this area we will study the following:

Optimizing the Academic & Student Life Environment

• Data Driven Programs – continuing to strengthen the academic programs by incorporating data and technology

• Nuturing Student Resilience – looking at school start and ending times, social emotional programming and physical health

• Reimaging Academic Requirements – partnering with colleges to understand what they seek in students and evaluating AP and other academic offerings in relation to what is best for the whole student

• Enhancing Athletics, Student Life and Community Service Programs –investigating the viability of our current programs and determining their future direction and possible additions

Ensuring the future viability of the school by fundraising efforts that will make all this planning possible.

Funding Our Vision

• Planning and executing a capital campaign for the construction of an Athletic and Student Life Center on the campus

• Increasing and diversifying other fundraising strategies to enhance the operations of the school, increase financial assistance and provide for specific projects

Developing plans for:

• The Athletic and Student Life Center

Building for the Future

What’s next

Leaders have been appointed to chair committees that will address each of the four areas. These action-oriented groups will explore and lead the ideation, and will report regularly to the Strategic Planning Committee. As implementation plans are developed they will be incorporated into each of the key areas. We appreciate your support and participation as the work continues!

• Campus-wide improvements including science labs, art rooms, Mansion maintenance and new bathrooms

• Adapting classrooms to maximize teaching

“Words cannot express my thanks for your kind hearted generosity which has allowed me to stay at Mercy these past four years. To each of you, my thanks for not what you have done for me, but what you have done for countless others. Your generous donations have made it possible for girls like me to have this wonderful experience.

Every girl who benefits from tuition assistance has a different story, yet we all have one desire in common…a desire to attend Mercy and to become a member of this passionate and close knit community where every girl belongs to a second family. Thanks to your support our dreams are being fulfilled every day at Mercy. ”

MAKING a difference Scholarship Benefit Dinner

Oh, What A Night!

It was a record breaking event with 374 attendees and raising more than $353,000!

We would like to express our deepest thanks to the generous sponsors and donors. 100% of all donations directly support Mercy students thanks to the Board of Directors who underwrote this dinner. It was inspiring to see the Board of Directors, Sisters, alumnae, parents, faculty, and friends of Mercy gather together in support of the Mercy Mission and to honor two long time faculty members, Eileen Horan and Mary Louise Castillo. These women have a combined 98 years of dedicated service to Mercy education, and were presented with the Catherine McAuley Award in recognition of their commitment to the vision of Catherine McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy and the education of young women.

The crowd was inspired by student speaker Gianna DeRaineri ‘18 who is now a freshman at the University of Portland, School of Nursing. Special thanks to the Making A Difference Honorary Committee and Clifton Clark of the San Francisco Marriott Waterfront for their hard work, support, and generosity.

Making A Difference provides urgently needed tuition assistance giving bright young women the opportunity for a Mercy education.

MERCYFUND THE

The Mercy Fund is the "gift every year" that we count on from our community—current parents, alumnae, parents of alumnae, faculty, and friends—to help bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. This is a vital cornerstone of philanthropy at Mercy, especially because we do not receive any government or church funding. Donations to The Mercy Fund are unrestricted, which means that they are immediately available to cover operational costs for the current school year. With your help, we are able to fund the school's greatest needs, as well as sustain and foster innovation in our academic, extracurricular, and spiritual programs.

HOW WILL YOUR GIFT IMPACT MERCY?

• You help Mercy maintain economic diversity: A robust Annual Giving Program reduces Mercy’s dependence on raising tuition, allowing us to keep tuition affordable and within the reach of a wider range of families.

• Your participation helps Mercy secure external funding: Strong participation in annual giving builds community, identifies solidarity, and can inspire significant gifts from external foundations. The philanthropic philosophy seems to be, “We support those organizations whose constituents believe in their programs enough to support them with an annual gift.”

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

THE OAKS FALL 2018 35
HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

A Family-First Approach to Charitable Giving Remember

Mercy HS Burlingame in Your Will or Living Trust

In addition to passing assets to loved ones, your will or living trust can also be used to define your legacy through support of Mercy High School Burlingame. When you remember us through a gift in your estate plans, you join a special group of people who have made some of our most important advances possible.

Advantages

• Simplicity. As little as one sentence in your will or living trust is all that is needed to complete your gift.

• Flexibility. Until your will or trust goes into effect, you are free to alter your plans.

• Versatility. You can give a specific item, an amount of money, a gift contingent upon certain events or a percentage of your estate.

How a Gift in Your Will Works

Your estate planning attorney can help you structure a gift so your loved ones will be taken care of first after you’re gone. He or she will include our sample language in a will or living trust you create, or add it to existing documents through an amendment called a codicil. A popular option is to leave a percentage of what is left of your estate after other beneficiaries have received their share so your gift will remain proportionate to the size of your estate, no matter how it fluctuates.

A Gift in Your Estate Plan Is Right for You If:

• You want the opportunity to guide decisions about the future ownership of your possessions and the legacy you leave behind.

• You have a will or living trust or are ready to create one.

• You want to make sure your support of Mercy Burlingame is still available after your lifetime.

• You want to balance your generosity to us with an assurance that loved ones are taken care of first.

• You want to maintain the flexibility to change your mind about your gift at any time.

For sample language to take to your estate planning attorney to add to your will or living trust, go to Mercy’s planned giving section of our website: https://www.mercyhsb.com/giving/planned-giving or contact the Advancement Office at 650.762.1190 or Mary Lund, Director of Advancement at mlund@ mercyhsb.com

GIVING

Nine Alumnae on Staff

Alumnae love coming back and giving to Mercy, and in the past few years, we have had this presence grow - from Mercy faculty, staff, and administration to involvement in key advisory boards and committees, Mercy women are sharing their talents with our community in numerous ways. This school year, we have 9 Mercy alumnae as part of our staff. We sat down with a few of them to discuss the impact of their Mercy experience, and what being back on campus means to them.

How did your Mercy experience make an impact on your life?

BC: Being at a small school that was entirely female made it easier to be myself. There was no pressure to look or act a certain way. Because of this, I made many connections and lifelong friends. I have a group of very close girlfriends, and we've been there for each other for all of life's major milestones.

KC: I think that my time at Mercy helped shape who I am today. Mercy gave me a space to grow and try new things. Through my time at Mercy, I learned to be confident and that it was ok to fail.

HD: My Mercy experience helped to reaffirm the significance of treating people with respect and consideration. It demonstrated the importance of community and being there for others when they are in need.

CRG: When I was a student I was inspired by our Athletic Director Ms. Fallon (Meave Fallon Ward ‘90). She was a great role model as a former high school and college athlete and now I am proud to be following in her footsteps and be a role model for our students today.

What made you want to come back to Mercy?

BC: After being a stay at home mom for the last 9 years, I really believe it was fate that brought me back here to work in the

Advancement Office. Once I stepped into the Mansion, I was greeted with the same warmth and hospitality that I first experienced as a freshman many years ago. Just like it was for me when I was a student, the faculty and staff are caring and fun, and I really and truly enjoy my work. As the Advancement Services Manager, I am constantly reminded of names and faces from the past. It's fun to connect the dots to see where former schoolmates are now!

AS: School has always been my second home, and as the Parent Volunteer Coordinator, I want to help make it feel that way for many more girls and their families.

What's your favorite thing about working at your alma mater?

EA: My favorite thing is being in the community, which is genuinely warm and caring. In my role as Assistant Director of Admission, I love greeting alumnae when they bring their daughters on campus to visit and since our sisterhood is farreaching and holds meaning, it doesn't matter if we attended Mercy at different times, once we know we are alums, we are connected.

KC: Working with the teachers that taught me is an amazing experience. They continue to mentor and teach me. I also think that it is a great connection with the students. Whenever the students get stressed out, I remind them that I was in their position once and if I could survive they will for sure be able to survive.

Join Mercy's new alumnae platform!

We’re excited to announce that Mercy Connect, our new alumnae networking platform, is now live!

Mercy has created a new online home for alumnae, called Mercy Connect. Through this site, you'll be able to message other alums, engage in social and professional networking, and stay up-to-date with alumnae and Mercy community news. As more people join the platform, we'll also be able to generate new opportunities for engagement, including mentorship (peer-to-peer and alum-to-current student), a blog for sharing alumnae stories and experiences, and more.

Here are few ways that Mercy Connect captures the spirit of the alumnae community

Mercy women are global: The new Alumnae Platform provides the opportunity for users to reconnect in ways that go beyond social media. Through the Online Directory, alumnae can search for friends and fellow classmates using the map function, or by occupational field, college/university, and more. Contact information (mailing address, phone number, and email address) is completely private; geographic locations are only accessible to alumnae who are registered on the network.

Mercy women are incredibly talented: The Alumnae Platform includes a number of tools to promote professional networking and partnerships. Through the Career Center, users can share job openings and internship opportunities, as well as upload resumes and apply for open positions.

Mercy women like to have fun: Easy-to-access event listings to help you stay up-to-date on all of the activities happening within the Mercy community and register to attend. The Groups function offers additional opportunities for class representatives and other volunteers to manage smaller gatherings, based on class year and affinity areas.

Mercy women are generous: Alumnae have expressed great interest in having greater opportunities to give back to one another, and to Mercy students. Through the new platform, users will be able to indicate how they’d like to make an impact. Whether you’d like to provide short-term mentorship, review resumes for young professionals, volunteer as a class representative, or donate to a fundraising campaign, there are many ways to get involved!

CLASS NOTES

1955

What began as an occasional luncheon get-together since graduation in ‘55 has segued over the years to trips in other cities and even out of state! Our first “get away” to Pine Mountain Lake in the Sierras included seven members of our class: Carol Shea Purdy, Rose Marie Ferrario Jacobberg, Diane Sheehan Key, Sandy Levy Dreweatt, Janet Lawson Holdren, Judie Cunningham MacDonald, and Carol Messano Porter. While in Green Valley, AZ, five of us (Rose, Carol, Diane, Carolyn, and Sandy) were joined by Ann Marie Wunderlich Schaffer for a day. This July took us on our second trip to San Diego. We spent four days touring the sights -- Balboa Park, Gaslamp downtown, shopping in Seaport Village, and loved the performance of the musical Once at the Lamb’s Players Theatre in Coronado. We’re back at home, looking forward to our next mini-reunion. How blessed we are for our continuing friendship as Mercy girls.

1956

Mary Lou Woodman Whitcomb and her husband of 58 years continue their lives in South Lake Tahoe as active community members. This spring they travelled to Australia and New Zealand. Mary Lou is active in the community; as lector at St. Theresa’s Church; as a Soroptimist Club member; and plays bridge two times a week. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary this year!

1957

Sharon Smith Campodonico has 4 wonderful children: Jeff, a neuropsychologist in Baltimore, MD, specializing in Geriatrics and forensic litigation; Liz, a middle school volleyball and basketball coach in Littleton, CO; Dominic, a senior law partner at Gordon and Rees in San Francisco, specializing in medical and pharmacology litigation; and Peter, who is a consultant in specialized fashion in New York. Nothing has changed for Sharon, who is still stringing beads and weaving baskets.

Pat Koch Delaney has been married for 56 years and has 9 grandchildren. She’s traveled to some fun places, still plays “9” holes of golf, but best of all, is still standing!

Lydia Fulvio Eslinger stays busy volunteering with the Red Cross, hospice, a local hospital auxiliary and the health ministry at her church. She also travels as much as possible, and highly recommends Antarctica as a destination.

Jeannie Britschgi Gallagher still works as a daycare provider. She has 20 grandchildren—11 girls and 9 boys. Ten grandchildren are attending Jeannie’s grammar school; one granddaughter (Colleen Sammons ‘13) is a Mercy alumna, another is a Mercy student (Reagan Sammons ‘20), and two more are hoping to attend.

1958

Anita Alonso Eden took the trip of a lifetime in July 2018 when she traveled to Israel for two weeks. The trip left her both exhilarated and exhausted, and gave her a whole new understanding of the Bible. Anita is looking forward to the reunion in September. (PHOTO:“Jerusalem”)

Beth Dado Aversa and her husband Guido celebrated their 50th Anniversary in February. They took a trip to New Orleans to celebrate and celebrated again over the summer with their five children, their spouses & twelve grandchildren when they gathered for their eldest granddaughter’s wedding. Beth is also active in a local quilting guild, sings in her church choir, and enjoys her grandchildren. (PHOTO: “Our trip to Arches National Park”)

Sister Philip Sharon Ellenberger writes, “In 1974 I joined Mother John Marie, who had a vision for a new community. We were canonically erected as a diocesan community on May 7, 1991 in the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas. We have houses in Monterrey, Mexico, Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Amarillo. On May 26 Mother John Marie passed away and, oh, we miss her. I am now the oldest by age and profession in the community! We number 43 this year with three joining us. My positions in Community remain the same -- infirmary and sewing room. I have helpers in both.”

1962

Maureen Murphy Jenkins retired after a 40 year career in nursing and transitioned to another passion, walking with people in their spiritual journey as a spiritual director/ companion. She and her family also recently welcomed a new grandson to the delight of all.

1963

Susan Pringle Smith was incredibly excited to have the chance

to “pin” her granddaughter, Kiley O’Brien ‘18, at the Alumnae Pinning Ceremony in May. (PHOTO: “Susan pinning Kiley at the Alumnae Pinning Ceremony”)

1964

Betty Stanley Berry was thrilled to join classmates Rey Friel ‘64 and Sr Celeste Marie (Trudy Nuttman) ‘64, along with other alumni as Sr. Suzanne conducted “God’s Grandeur” at the Mercy chapel for a Jubilee weekend in July. Classmate

Marilyn Weeks ‘64 was in attendance. The concert included several pieces written by Sr. Suzanne. Most noted was the Cantata that Sr. Suzanne wrote in 1962 for Mother Cyril’s Jubilee. The class of ‘64 were among the first to sing the Cantata during class with their beloved Sr. Suzanne. Singing again under her direction was special indeed! Laura Pometta Simpson is happily ensconced from Saturday afternoon teas at the Palace Hotel and Ritz Carlton in San Francisco. She is also the the staff harpist for surgery waiting at UCSF at Mission Bay, Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites (the finest hospital in the West according to US News and World Report). Occasionally alumnae come by for a visit, and Laura would love to see more, as it’s always a treat to catch up!

1968

Barbara Rutherford Crest had the chance to meet up with friends from the Class of 1968 in Rome, Italy this past spring.

Patricia (Patty) Siegel Schmolze and her husband Robert (Bob) Schmolze (Serra HS ’68) celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary with a trip to the Island of Kauai. Both Patty and Bob are currently retired, however Patty continues to teach part-time as an instructor of early childhood teachers in training. They have two adult children Robert (and his fiancé Tabitha) and Laurel (and her husband Mike) and a vivacious almost seven-year-old granddaughter, Charlotte Rose. Bob and Patty continue to enjoy life in “the big city” actively grandparenting, taking classes, seeing shows, and exploring museums. With extended family in Northern California, they visit the area often and travel elsewhere in the US and abroad frequently.

CLASS NOTES

Sharon Sodek Woodcock - This year has been a year of great joy and a year of great sorrow for Sharon. In February 2018 Sharon was delighted to be present for the birth of her 2nd granddaughter in Hawi, Hawaii. Lana Woodcock Belmarez joined her sister Makena, age three, and brother Mateo, age 10, into the circle of family love. However, just a few short months later in April 2018, Sharon dealt with the profound loss of having her younger siblings, Shannon Maureen Sodek ‘70 and Shaymus (Shay) Sodek die within three weeks of each other. Shannon passed away in Northern California and Shay on the island of Kauai where he had lived for several years. Both died from complications of heart disease. Looking ahead, Sharon and her husband Joel are planning a permanent move from their home in Portland to Hawi, to join their daughter Sally, son-in-law Brad, and grandchildren on the Big Island. Sharon may be reached at: sharonswoodcock@gmail.com

1971

Jackie Madden Haugh keeps up with her Mercy crew on Facebook. She just published her third book, The Promise I Kept, and is turning it into an Audible version. Jackie’s four kids are completely “launched,” and she’s expecting her first grandchild soon.

Eileen O’Day Whitcomb recently walked away from four decades of the nursing profession, jumped on a plane to travel the world, learn a new language, and grab life by the horns. She’s grateful for a deeply loving relationship with the man of her dreams, and continues to let curiosity guide her through new doors of opportunity. Ellen adds, “My tribe continues to grow and contribute to helping make this crazy world a better place for future generations. Hope everyone is doing well. All the best to you.” (PHOTO: Maui 2018)

1974

Angela Aubry is grateful to Cindy Wallace Chin ‘74, a “true Mercy sister,” who came to her rescue during the Santa Rosa fire in 2017.

Nancy Ryan Hines recently came together with lifelong friends from the Class of 1974 to celebrate the marriage of Valerie Vick Nichols ‘74. (PHOTO: Left to Right, Jennifer Kockos Morse, Colleen McGovern, Nancy Ryan Hines, Valerie Vick Nichols, Ann Buckley McCarthy, Mary Andrews)

1978

Mary Adkins Nicholson and her husband Nick just celebrated 39 years of marriage in June. It has gone by so quickly and they look forward to their 40th next year. They love spending time with their 8 year old granddaughter, Anabelle, along with activities like Disney trips, day trips, camping, and Harley rides. Their 4 1/2 Mo. old long haired German Shepherd, Mr. Rocco, is keeping them quite busy, too.
