OUR MISSION
To ensure the quality of life for persons with developmental disabilities through the recognition of each person’s inherent dignity and right to a life filled with learning and love.
OUR VISION
We envision a world of fairness and equality in which people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live more fully integrated within the community. We work to change the world’s view of those we serve as we help them discover their individual gifts and abilities, and we seek to promote greater compassion and understanding of those people who make up our community.
OUR CORE VALUES
Mercy Home’s Mission & Vision are fulfilled in practice through our foundational Core Values of: Care Trust
WHO WE ARE
Mercy Home for Children is a lifeline, a community, and a constant in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). For over 160 years, our mission has been rooted in compassion, beginning in 1862 when the Sisters of Mercy welcomed five orphaned boys into their convent after a devastating fire. That single act of Mercy laid the foundation for a legacy that continues to evolve; driven by a deep commitment to dignity, inclusion, and lifelong support for those most often overlooked.
Guided by our core values, we provide person-centered services tailored to the unique strengths and goals of each individual we serve. Today, our network includes 13 Residential Homes across Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, where over 100 individuals live in supportive, nurturing environments. Through our Day Habilitation without Walls, Community Habilitation, and Respite programs, individuals build life skills, explore their communities, and gain greater independence through real-world experiences and meaningful connections.
Our commitment to the whole person is at the heart of everything we do. We recognize that meaningful support goes beyond meeting basic needs to include fostering joy, expression, and emotional well-being. That’s why we offer a wide range of therapeutic programs designed to uplift the human spirit. Our Performing and Creative Arts Portfolio including Art Therapy, Music Therapy, and Horticultural Therapy offers powerful outlets for creativity, healing, and communication. Our Respite Services create space for social, recreational, and therapeutic experiences, while giving families vital time to rest and recharge.
As we expand our reach, we remain anchored in our founding mission and responsive to today’s needs. Our newest initiative, Kay’s Place, is a testament to this commitment; offering 10 fully ADA-compliant, barrier-free housing units that embody our vision of accessible, inclusive living for individuals with I/DD. This is just one example of how we are building a future that removes obstacles and opens doors to opportunity.
At Mercy Home, progress is rooted in purpose. With a strong foundation built by the Sisters of Mercy and a forward-thinking approach to care, we continue to invest in our workforce, enhance service quality, and drive sustainable growth. Every day, we work to ensure that every person we serve is not only supported but celebrated. This is where potential is nurtured, voices are heard, and lives are transformed with Mercy at the center.
Garden of Growth Spring Fundraising Gala
Anthony J. Simeone Chair, Board of Directors
Executive Director
On behalf of the entire Mercy Home for Children community, welcome to our Garden of Growth Spring Fundraising Gala. We are so grateful that you have chosen to spend this special evening with us; a night that celebrates progress, honors partnership, and above all, affirms the strength and dignity of the individuals we serve.
Tonight is a celebration of growth not just the growth nurtured by our dedicated staff and programs, but the personal growth of the Men and Women who call Mercy Home their own. Since our founding in 1862, Mercy Home has stood as a sanctuary and advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. What began as a mission rooted in compassion has evolved into a dynamic network of services supporting hundreds of people across Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island.
We are thrilled to honor three extraordinary individuals this evening: Donna T. Whiteford, a champion of inclusive care; RSM US LLP, whose corporate partnership has expanded our capacity to serve; and Linda Wood, a cherished Mercy Home resident whose courage and determination embody the heart of our mission.
Our theme, “Garden of Growth”, reflects one of our most beloved and impactful programs; our Horticultural Therapy Program. Established in 2012, this initiative uses nature and gardening as a healing tool, helping participants develop social, emotional, and motor skills in nurturing environments. Like our mission itself, this program is grounded in the belief that every individual deserves the space, care, and encouragement to grow with dignity and love.
As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to person-centered care through our Residential Services, Support Programs, and Clinical Care that are as individualized and diverse as the people we serve. In the last year, we’ve expanded our services to reach more individuals, integrated trauma-informed practices across all programs, and deepened our investments in inclusion and community engagement.
Mercy Home is more than a provider of services it is home, a community, and a promise. A promise that no one will be left behind. That every person, regardless of ability, deserves to be seen, heard, and supported in leading a life of meaning.
Your presence tonight sends a clear message that you believe in that promise. You believe in our mission. And you are helping us build a more inclusive, more compassionate world.
Thank you for walking this path with us and for helping our garden grow!
With deepest appreciation,
Chair, Board of Directors
Janice M. Aris Executive Director

Garden of Growth Spring Fundraising Gala
Dear Distinguished Guests and Supporters,
Welcome to our Garden of Growth! A celebration rooted in compassion, blooming with purpose, and thriving thanks to the care of people like you.
As Vice Chairman of the Board, Chair of the Development Committee, and your Gala Chair this evening, I am filled with pride and heartfelt joy to welcome you to this special gathering. Tonight is not just an event; it’s a living tribute to the seeds we’ve planted over generations, and the vibrant future we continue to cultivate together.
Our extraordinary honorees are visionaries who, like master gardeners, have nurtured possibility where others saw limits. Through their dedication to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, they’ve cleared new paths, opened fresh soil, and made room for growth that changes lives. Their work is a gift, and we are deeply thankful for them.
To our Event Sponsors and Supporters, your generosity is sunlight and water to our mission. Without you, this evening would not have been possible, nor would the holistic care we provide or the continued growth of our life-affirming Horticultural Therapy Program.
For over 160 years, Mercy Home has stood as a sanctuary of healing and hope. With your partnership, we will continue to flourish; expanding our reach, deepening our roots, and cultivating joy and dignity for those we serve.
Thank you for walking this garden path with us. May this evening inspire you as much as your support inspires us!

Stef Manisero joined NY1 as a Reporter in October 2021, and became Weekend Afternoon Anchor in the summer of 2022.
Originally from Bay Ridge, Stef returned to New York City after spending the previous six years as an Anchor for Spectrum News 1 Texas. Reporting in her home city, where she has family in all five boroughs, is a dream come true.
Stef loves a good story, and recognizes the power storytelling has to connect people. Some of her most memorable stories include covering several World Series, Super Bowl LI (the Tom Brady comeback Super Bowl!) and Hurricane Harvey, when she and her camera crew spent a week on a boat, rescuing people from flooded homes and bringing them to dry land.
Stef won an Emmy for her story on Mike Capps, the voice of the Round Rock Express, who says baseball saved him from his battle with PTSD after decades as a war correspondent. She’s also been nominated for seven Emmys, and has won three AP awards.
When she’s not reporting, you might find Stef playing or teaching tennis. She loves the Yankees, and is known for keeping her own game scorebooks for years. She also is a big fan of the Rangers, Packers and all things Michigan Go Blue!

Mrs. Donna T. Whiteford has spent a lifetime advancing causes she believes in causes that lift up children, families, women, and the most vulnerable members of our society. Her legacy is one of impact born from conviction, of service rooted in purpose. A passionate leader and generous advocate, Donna has devoted her time, talents, and heart to organizations that create change, build community, and offer hope.
Donna served as Chair of the Board of Directors at Mercy Home for Children until 2023 and now continues her service as a Member-at-Large, contributing her expertise to both the Executive and Development Committees. Her leadership has helped guide the organization through pivotal moments expanding services, refining strategy, and reinforcing its mission to support individuals with developmental disabilities. Steady, insightful, and values-driven, Donna has played a central role in ensuring Mercy Home’s continued growth and sustainability.
Her commitment to community is far-reaching. She is a co-founding principal and board member of BloomAgainBklyn, a nonprofit that reduces social isolation by repurposing donated flowers into heartfelt arrangements for seniors, shelter residents, and hospital patients. The organization’s mission creating human connection through simple, beautiful gestures reflects Donna’s own approach to service: intentional, inclusive, and deeply compassionate.
Donna also serves as Treasurer for the Brooklyn Women’s Exchange, one of Brooklyn’s oldest charitable organizations focused on empowering women artisans and creators. Her stewardship helps sustain a tradition of economic opportunity and community support that dates back to the mid-19th century.
Her leadership resume continues: former board member of the Brooklyn Chapter of the American Red Cross, volunteer with Brooklyn Leaders in the NYC public school system, Secretary/Treasurer of her Brooklyn co-op board, and Chair of the Parish Pastoral Council at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Wherever Donna serves, she brings a powerful combination of strategic thinking and heartfelt care.
Professionally, Donna built a successful career as a global marketing executive in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, with senior roles at Merck, Inc., Elan Biopharmaceutical Company, and Medco. That same discipline and excellence continues to shape her nonprofit work today.
We are proud to honor Mrs. Donna T. Whiteford with the 2025 Legacy Award in recognition of her unwavering dedication, decades of leadership, and the powerful, lasting difference she continues to make in the lives of others.
RSM US LLP, the nation’s leading provider of audit, tax, and consulting services focused on the middle market, is being honored as Mercy Home for Children’s 2025 Community Partner Honoree. This recognition celebrates not only RSM’s financial generosity but the heart, integrity, and shared vision that define their ongoing partnership with our community.
RSM has long demonstrated a deep commitment to inclusive care and opportunity through its firm-wide initiatives. Programs such as Birdies for Love and the Abilities Employee Network Group have directly supported Mercy Home’s programs and the individuals we serve uplifting those with developmental disabilities and empowering voices that too often go unheard. These efforts are far more than symbolic; they represent a firm-wide culture of intentional engagement and equity.
Beyond fundraising, RSM’s partnership is defined by its people. Through Volunteer Give Back Days, employees roll up their sleeves and show up beautifying residences, supporting events, and building real relationships with our residents and staff. Their involvement is hands-on and heartfelt, a reflection of a company that doesn’t just donate it dedicates.
Leadership at RSM also plays a vital role in this mission. With key figures like Partner Ricky Jain serving on Mercy Home’s Board of Directors, the firm continues to provide strategic insight and financial stewardship that strengthen our long-term sustainability. It’s a partnership marked by trust, purpose, and mutual respect.
Whether through service, strategy, or stewardship, RSM exemplifies what corporate citizenship should be: action-driven, community-anchored, and authentic. They have become a trusted ally in Mercy Home’s journey, helping to create a world where all individuals are seen, valued, and supported.
We are proud to recognize RSM US LLP as our 2025 Community Partner Honoree and celebrate the extraordinary example they set not only in business, but in how they lead with purpose and serve with heart.
Accepting the 2025 Community Partner Award on behalf of RSM US LLP is Mr. Ricky Jain, a Partner at the firm and Treasurer of Mercy Home for Children’s Board of Directors. A trusted financial strategist and dedicated community leader, Ricky is the embodiment of service-driven leadership.
At RSM, Ricky plays a pivotal role advising clients through complex transactions with clarity, precision, and integrity. His deep expertise in financial strategy and risk management has earned him distinction within one of the nation’s leading audit, tax, and consulting firms.
At Mercy Home, Ricky brings those same talents to bear guiding our financial stewardship, strengthening fiscal responsibility, and shaping the long-term sustainability of our mission. His role as Treasurer is marked by diligence, empathy, and a people-first mindset that puts the well-being of those we serve at the center of every conversation.
Ricky’s leadership is grounded in his core belief that professional success carries its highest value when aligned with purpose. He is a tireless advocate for inclusion, a bridge-builder across sectors, and a steady hand behind the scenes ensuring that every decision supports the individuals and families who rely on Mercy Home.
We are proud to honor Mr. Ricky Jain and the entire RSM US LLP team for their outstanding commitment to partnership, compassion, and community. Together, they exemplify what it means to lead with purpose and serve with heart.
Mercy Home is proud to honor Ms. Linda Wood as our 2025 Individual of the Year a recognition that celebrates not only her remarkable journey, but also the quiet courage, deep faith, and enduring joy she brings to our community every single day.
Born on November 7, 1955, Linda joined Mercy Home on November 20, 2002, after years of searching for a place where she could feel safe, seen, and supported. She found that place and a new beginning at our Augusta IRA Residence in Brooklyn. In 2023, Linda transitioned to Chrys Residence in Queens to receive more comprehensive care in response to changing health needs. Her move, handled with compassion and care, marked the next chapter in a journey defined by transformation.
When Linda arrived at Mercy Home, she carried the weight of past struggles: emotional isolation, difficulty with communication, and uncertainty about her future. But Linda’s story is one of resilience. With the unwavering support of staff and the strength of her Christian faith, she began to blossom. Over the years, she learned new life skills, regained mobility through physical therapy, and most importantly built meaningful relationships.
Today, at 69 years old, Linda is the heartbeat of her community. A proud woman of faith, she reads her Bible daily and speaks to God in moments of reflection with her favorite words: “Help Me Lord.” Her spirit is both grounded and glowing gentle, but full of life. From cracking jokes and solving puzzles to leading karaoke sessions and joining in on social events, Linda brings light wherever she goes. As one staff member said best: “Linda Wood is the life of the party.”
Her communication has flourished she now confidently advocates for herself, helps choose her own outfits and groceries, and makes her preferences known. She participates, connects, and contributes, leaving a quiet but unmistakable imprint on those around her. Linda’s love for crafting, gospel music, restaurants, and coloring are just pieces of what make her unique. What truly sets her apart is her heart humble, kind, and unwavering.
In November 2024, Linda was named Mercy Home’s Individual of the Month nominated by Assistant Resident Manager Laura Aghanwa. That recognition placed her among twelve honorees under consideration for our highest individual honor. In early 2025, our executive team unanimously chose Linda as Individual of the Year a decision that reflects not only her personal growth, but also the impact she has had on those who have had the joy of knowing her.
Linda Wood reminds us why we do what we do. Her story embodies our mission and core values: Care, Compassion, Respect, Teamwork, and Trust. Her journey is a living testament to what is possible when faith meets love, and when support meets the soul.
