The history of Kappabashi Tool Street began in the first year of the Taisho era (1912 C.E.) with several tool shops and antiquarian dealers set up at around Kappabashi Bridge over the Shinhori River. Located in the middle of Ueno and Asakusa stations, about 170 specialty shops dealing with tableware, kitchen equipment, kitchen utensils, confectionery tools, food raw materials and packaging supplies are on the 800 meters arcade. In 1946, Majimaya confectionery tool shop was founded by the current president’s grandfather, Saburo Yoshida. He was succeeded that shop name in officially from Kisaburo Majima tool shop (the oldest confectionery tool shop in Japan) in Kanda Manseibashi. At present, the shop located just around the corner of Asakusa Honganji Temple, about a 3-minute walk from Kappabashi Tool Street from Asakusa Street. They handle tools from all over the world as a specialty shop for the confection. Also, Hitoshi Ohkouchi who is the craft man of wooden mold, he had made wooden mold about over sixty years at Majimaya. His molds were popular all over Japan and made the happiness of making sweets for many people. (But he is gone in 2019 ) Those molds are making people s happiness. So I designed by the concept that “Molds of happiness”.There are 3000 different types molds that I must show. A layout was required that allowed the customer to see all of them smoothly and that placed no stress on the staff. In addition, there is a problem that it is an arcade area, and the space basement and the second floor is not effective space for a shop. I needed to solve the problem in a limited space. So I suggested setting up those evacuation stairs and protective fences with a display of 3000 molds in the center of the building. In addition, I arranged 3000 tin boxes around there. By linking the display with the number printed on the box, it was made so that the customer could select it themselves and take out the required number from the stock. In addition, during the planning of the building, all floors were connected by split-level floors, and while choosing molds, customers were guided to move up and down subconsciously. This solved the unique problem of the arcade area. I have chosen Coalten steel for the exterior material. This material increases the strength as it ages. It is a material suitable for “Majimaya” that be going to start even now to over 100 years. I hope that from here, smiles will spread throughout Japan through the making of sweets.

Dalong Mix-Use Complex was originally built in 1985, found with contaminated building materials in 1996 and lastly demolished in 2015 for the concern of public health and safety. Q-LAB won a nation-wide competition in 2015 to re-design the new Dalong Mix-Use Complex. The program calls for a return of the traditional market on the ground level, municipal office on mid floors and 96 social housing units on top. The challenge of designing such a complex was to create three sets of circulation which work hand in hand harmonically with their distinctive functions while avoiding interference on their daily operation. Two back-to-back center cores were established from the outset of design to create two completely separate entrances for municipal office on mid-levels and social housing on top floors. This arrangement frees up most of the space on the ground level for the traditional market to operate both interiorly and exteriorly. The “8-shape” floor plan naturally creates two zones with one continuous path which provides visitors with a smooth transition from either raw food to cooked food or vice versa. Moreover, a coherent colour identity was given to the entire traditional market with the use of ancient green throughout the interior space in reference to the Confucius Temple nearby. The visual language including signage and stalls were uniformly integrated for the first time in the history of Taiwan. As for the municipal office taking up the 2nd to the 5th floor, special attention was given to the design of its lift lobbies to further differentiate the occupation of its various bureaucratic departments. In response to the history of the site where the area was named as “Dalong” meaning “Dragon” indirect translation, traditional material such as brick was designed and implemented in a parametric method to visually create a three-dimensional dragon as the main display once visitors arrive at the 2nd-floor lobby. Similar approaches were taken from the 3rd floor to the 5th floor respectively. The social housing starts from the 6th floor and ends on the 13th floor were designed with a double “cruciform” floor plan which rests on the plinth of the bureaucratic office and traditional market. The layout allows for maximum sunlight and natural ventilation at the same time for a total of 6 units per floor. Both the lift lobbies and the corridors were filled with an abundance of natural light and breeze throughout the seasons for the conservation of energy and means of sustainability. The stacking of cruciform social housing on top of the bureaucratic office naturally creates six pockets of sky garden on the 5th floor where trees and benches were designed to encourage social engagement and recreational opportunity. Dalong Mix-Use Complex is the first rebuilding effort in the history of the traditional market in Taiwan to modernize its spatial quality as well as encouraging a nation-wide movement in urban regeneration.

THE CHAPEL OF TOKYO KAIKAN Tokyo Kaikan’s main building with the Imperial Palace view opened in 1922 as a world-famous social venue that anyone could use. The chapel is newly built in Tokyo Kaikan along with its rebuilding in 2019. Tokyo Kaikan’s history, tradition, style plus Imperial Palace forest view make it ideal for special ceremonies, with Japanese aesthetics enjoying the passage of time and seasons, blurring indoor-outdoor borders. Inspired by the Imperial Palace forest, the approach is like the sun through a tree canopy, inviting to extraordinary places, with natural light’s direction and quality evoking nature’s changing elements of time, season, weather, etc. Intersecting light and wood lattice create the couple’s special space, quietly celebrating them. This Chapel, real only there and then, is eternal in memory.

ABOUT HIYORIYAMA COAST MUSEUM In 2019, Hiyoriyama Coast Museum opened in the GeoPark located in Hyogo Pref., north-west of Honshu Island, Japan, adjacent to the Kinosaki Marine World - a marine research aquarium facility with 300 species in 7,000 varieties being nurtured, bred and protected. The museum exhibits the work of the species preservation and learnings from life in nature and aims to protect the earth’s wild animals and pass them on to the next generation. We contributed in the overarching creative direction, from developing a business concept, basic plan, architecture, interior space, exhibition, signage, outdoor space, and admission ticket design. Nomura’s high design quality manifested the Museum’s dedicated attitude towards life and disseminated it to visitors and improved the brand value of Kinosaki Marine World. The exhibition concept of the Museum is “Storyteller” – to communicate stories by zookeepers on reproductive activities that sustain lives. Our focus was to illuminate only the essence of information we want to deliver by elaborating on the balance of the entire space size, space between the texts, colour, moulding tone, and signage. We took advantage of its location along the coast and had the gallery space incorporating the Sea of Japan through the window as a borrowing landscape into a living-exhibit. The footbath bench using the local hot spring represented unique hospitality, offering the panoramic sea view. We capitalized on the long and narrow museum space and created two-side exhibitions. At a set interval, room lights slowly are turned off and a 30 x 5m wall projection shows breeding activities of local Stork. It is a moving story of the community’s efforts to return stork to the wild, along with the beautiful local landscape. For impactful communication of storytelling, the zookeepers’ passion for reproduction work is summarized in a series of concise copy, or Haiku, complemented by impressive graphics. We paid careful considerations to the messages, exhibition explanations, captions, and video contents, in a common format so they read and sound as if the zookeepers were talking to the visitors in person.

Type: Residential Location: Hangzhou Client: Hong Kong Resort Size: 1,600sqft with roof garden Completion: 2019 Q2 This duplex in the outskirts of Hangzhou shows aspirations for a different way of life in today’s consumer culture. What is luxury? It’s not about rarity, materials or flat size. Rather, it’s about living at ease with freedom over the ownership of possessions. The duplex has an open layout with both interlocking and free-flowing spaces, offering endless leisure and living options. In the living room, paint your next masterpiece or watch TV on the oversized sofa. Sharpen your culinary skills in the spacious open kitchen and enjoy a meal with fresh herbs picked from the rooftop garden. Or, write up your next blog post alongside a cup of coffee on the breakfast table. Explore your artistic creativity and indulge in your musical talents in the first bedroom. Or relax with a hot bath while listening to a favourite record. In the second bedroom, you can write a poem, read a book, or daydream with a mural of floating clouds behind you. SKY DESIGN AWARDS 2020 Shenzhen Longhua Book City is the sixth Book City Building in Shenzhen with a ~46,000m² building area. It is set to become a new local cultural hub which is more than a place of reading, but also a place for innovative design workshops, leisure, entertainment, child education, and commercial. From design initiation, we hope that the design would be able to provoke dialogues between different mediums: between nature and people, art and culture, space and sensation, et cetera. By looking into the past, present and future of Book City culture, our design aims to rejuvenate the daily life of citizens and help them to rediscover the joy of reading by bringing them a brand new reading experience, through a smart architecture that can breathe (natural ventilation), grow (flexibility), and understand the needs of readers (interactive). Shenzhen Book City has started a revolution of living through reading in the past 20 years, and today they are bringing on another revolution. What is represented in our architectural and interior design in this project is not the physicality of books, but the cultural lifestyle that is brought forward by reading. Void spaces intercross three-dimensionally and create dialogues with the surrounding context at every corner of the building. With such spatial arrangement, the program rooms and void spaces can interact with each other, and even enable future possibilities for the program rooms to expand in the long run. The infrastructural setup allows the architecture to grow in time with changing demand in the Book City’s operation. Throughout the height of the building, we have dotted a series of interactive spaces in various sizes, all connected by a spiral circulation. Walking up from the basement exhibition hall to the rooftop garden, the journey is characterized by the interaction of space with people, with books, with nature, with sunlight, and with the mind. By carefully maneuvering visitors through the interior into nature and back, we hope to bring a breathing architecture to the city and awaken the public’s engagement with their very own cultural venue. The Project took nearly two and a half years from initiation to realization. During which we have slowly progressed to making a distinction of The Longhua Book City in comparison with the previous five Book Cities. The project is more than just a book store; it is designed to be a creative platform, a cultural platform, a sharing and display platform, experience platform, and also an intimate place that citizens in Shenzhen can identify with, and grow together with for generations.

Looking into the hole (ANA) floating quietly on the glass is similar to glancing at the grid of Kyomachiya, a traditional townhouse found mainly in Kyoto. By looking into the hole (ANA), a relationship between inside and outside is executed. The light goes through, and the shadow of the outline of the hole (ANA) is projected on the surface of the wine. The bouquet of the wine from the hole (ANA) is another way to enjoy the wine. By paying close attention to the holes, in order not to spill wine, the time for staring at the wine is inevitably increased, the presence of the holes has been emphasized. Drinking through the “hole (ANA) “ adds a new pleasure and vividly colours on our activities.
