From the Principal

The tree that bends in the wind, survives, and then thrives. With this in mind, we have continued to adapt to circumstances and make the best of each situation: a welcome and rewarding constant in a world of change, this year, and for the Class of 2022, all three years with our Senior School.

From the start of the academic year, adaptability has been the order of the day. Together we have overcome the challenges of a normalising pandemic, enabling students to pursue their learning, friendships and growth, which they do with a welcome sense of optimism and enthusiasm.

Their nimbleness and ability to adapt, are lifelong lessons that will serve them well in the years ahead, as it does our teaching and specialist staff who have been with them all the way this year.

Congratulations to the Class of 2022

At our Year 12 Graduation Ceremony at the Adelaide Convention Centre in October, I reminded students and their families alike, that for the open minded, learning is lifelong and one that never ends. It was also a wonderful time to reflect and acknowledge achievements, celebrate accomplishments, and herald the next chapter in these young lives.

It was an honour to personally congratulate each of our graduates and celebrate their milestone with family and friends at their Graduation Ball in November – marking the end of one chapter and the opening of another.

Graduations are joyous, with the many and varied talents of our clever and likeable young people showcased. Everyone can be proud of what our graduates achieve, appreciating that while all growth is rarely easy or comfortable – instead a challenge with reward.

For our teachers guiding young people in their learning, personal development, and growth, is a privilege. Mercedes College teachers are special – experts in their field, with a rare level of care lived by actions. Just one example, is the many hours teachers invested during the school holidays to guide our Year 12 students through their learning and preparation for assessments and examinations.

Mercedes College has a rich and valued culture centred on quality relationships. This can make saying goodbye hard yet holding good people back from what’s next for them, is out of step with our responsibility of providing a place where everyone can flourish and find their best.

As 2022 draws to a close, we farewell some much-loved faces at Mercedes College, yet in wishing them well, we also open the door for others to enter, to flourish and shine. In particular I thank Paul Wadsworth for his leadership, integrity and compassion over many years of service as our Deputy Principal. In many ways an unsung hero of the College going about his

‘‘ ’’

days with humility and service. Paul has lived the vision of our Mercy founders and is respected by many.

Bill Gaynor and Anne Morse remembered by many of our old scholars both retire after a combined 75 years of service and having a profound impact on the lives of many, many students. All irreplaceable, yet as is the way with Mercedes College, their departure provides opportunity for others to step forward and continue their legacy.

To our 2022 College Captains Eric Penna, Abigail Ranford, Amelie Finnimore and Jack Braddy, you’ve served as wonderful ambassadors, with character, fun and true to the Mercy spirit of the College. Welcome also to Chloe Tarasenko, Isabella Barton, Lachlan Fox and Eamon Sibly who take on the mantle for 2023.

As another school year comes to a close, I’d like to acknowledge the many wonderful events, achievements and milestones we have observed and experienced since January.

Teaching, learning and creating memories

In late Term 3 our long-awaited and 25th trek to Mimili in the APY Lands got underway providing adventure for all, ahead of Term 4 which is rich in highlights as a year of teaching, learning and growing culminate. In just a few short weeks we have enjoyed a series of memorable moments and events at the College. From our Year 12 Graduation events plus our Year 5 IB Primary Years Programme graduate exhibition showcasing deep inquiry based-learning, Footsteps Dance practice and performances, to our Year 3’s exploring the Woodhouse Activity Centre and Year 10’s geocaching.

Throw in a Brass concert, Piano in the Parlour, SACE Art and Design exhibition, a ‘Week without Walls’ for our Middle School learners, a moving Remembrance Day service plus Senior School final assessments and exams and 2023 transition visits, family information sessions, and our superb Year 8 Musical, Singin’ in the Rain, plus summer sport and sports fun days – there’s been much to participate in, celebrate and enjoy.

High performance

Our Strategic Plan 2021 – 2025 provides a clear sense of direction, defined ambition and alignment of effort that is underpinned by our Master Plan and 10-year Financial Plan. Implementing this sees us improving our facilities, investing in technology and future capability, and building on the excellence synonymous with Mercedes College.

Thank you for your financial donations that together bring our vision to life. To donate, simply visit mercedes.catholic.edu.au/support knowing that every dollar is appreciated and is invested for student benefit.

Everyone’s contribution at Mercedes College is appreciated, and we are blessed to have a team of enthusiastic volunteers – parents, grandparents, old scholars and College friends – actively participating in our community by regularly doing something for others. Thank you.

Achieving together

In the three years I have been with Mercedes College, I am proud of what we have achieved together as a community, both in the here and now learning, as well as planning and investing to ensure young people can long enjoy and benefit from the vision of our founders.

Providing a high quality education, and positive wellbeing experience to meet changing needs of young people, requires the collective effort of many. Thank you to everyone who helps us do that: our families, volunteers, old scholars, and partner organisations as well as our fantastic staff and the leadership team. Your continued support and commitment to participate, improve and embrace a ‘best better’ approach is very much appreciated.

Being part of the Mercedes College community is a blessing, and I wish you all a Holy and Merry Christmas, and every happiness for the New Year.

When finished, these spaces will be where our students refine their performance skills, train and compete –inside and out – plus celebrate achievements and welcome people to our community.

Despite a wet winter, our $25 million investment in a new high performance Arts and Sports Precinct is taking form. This project remains on track to be completed in late 2023, and officially opened in early 2024 – a fitting milestone to mark 70 years of students flourishing at Mercedes College.

College Council Chair

Thanks to our founders, the Mercy Keys have long guided teaching and learning practices at Mercedes College. As values, the six Mercy Keys - compassion, loyalty, justice, integrity, responsibility, and mutual respect – guide who we are, informing and guiding decisions at all levels, including our College Council.

This year the focus Mercy Key has been Loyalty. The Fleur de Lis on the top pocket of every blazer – and the name of this publication – includes the phrase: Loyal en Tout, meaning loyal in all or loyal to everything. Students at Mercedes learn that loyalty is the core of friendship – with themselves and others –and central to all values.

Through our efforts planning, and now overseeing implementation, the Council shows its loyalty to our founders vision, ensuring future generations of children can play in open space, enjoying the beauty and serenity of the gardens and grounds, growing spiritually and emotionally, and learning in well equipped classrooms and spaces with access to technology and equipment unknown when we were at school.

With investment in facilities right across the campus, including the Design and Tech Hub, Junior School Playground, and high performance Arts and Sports Precinct, Mercedes College will continue to provide a world-class education for children from 5 years of age to 18 years of age when they graduate ready to take on the world.

A key aspect of Council’s work is the strategic oversight of Mercedes College, with the Archbishop of Adelaide the final authority, with Andrew Balkwill the school’s operational leader. This year, Council has decided to reduce the number of subcommittee, further to an external review of the existing structure. A streamlined approach with clear reporting and terms of reference will ensure responsibilities are met and resources used well, with three Standing Committees:

1) Finance and Infrastructure,

2) Faith and Education

3) People and Culture.

Community connecting home, family and school

Mercedes College has a strong community spirit, and team of volunteers we can all be proud of. By participating and contributing where and how they can, our community plays an active role in how children learn in and beyond the classroom, as well as helping create great memories by supporting special events.

At the start of Term 1 it looked like we were in for a tricky year, yet with COVID restrictions lifted we are again coming together and playing an active role in our children’s experience of school. Special mention to the more than 250 volunteers who give their time and energy to support Mercedes College. Volunteering –be it scoring a match on the weekend, helping on the BBQ at an event or wrapping the lucky dips for children to enjoy at a Christmas celebration – is a great way to do something for others, and show students just how easy and fulfilling it is to be active participants in the world.

Thank you to everyone who shares their skills and knowledge with our wonderful students, giving their time generously and supporting our annual fundraising efforts. Everyone’s contribution is valued at Mercedes College, and I trust in return, your experience is rewarding.

As the College Council Chair, thank you to my fellow Council members, the College leadership and the wider community for your passion, contribution and commitment to Mercedes College long delivering a world-class education and outstanding pastoral care.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and happy New Year – see you on the other side of the summer holidays for another exciting year.

Director of Mission

Mercy Week is a time of reflection, when we focus on the values synonymous with Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, our Mercedes College founders.

Through student-led activities across the week, our community supported one another to raise funds for national charity Mercy Works, and the week concluded with a reverent Mercy Day Mass at St Francis Xavier Cathedral.

The coming holiday period marks many important events across a range of religions, the heart of which all offer time for reflection and opportunities to connect or reconnect with family, and encourage kindness and compassion towards all.

I encourage you to celebrate this time of rest with your loved ones, and look forward to welcoming you back in 2023, when we’ll be journeying together with Mutual Respect.

Mercy Award

Congratulations Helen Connolly

Helen is the South Australian Commissioner for Children and Young People, and a Mercedes College Old Scholar, who embodies the values of the Mercy Keys to support, collaborate with, and advocate for young South Australians.

Congratulations Charlotte Sorell

Charlotte, a 2022 Graduate, embodies the legacy of the late John Fanning, namely being fair, firm, kind, honest, and compassionate. Graduation Ceremony 2022

Friday 21 October, Adelaide Convention Centre

“This is the conclusion of our schooling journey; however, it is only the beginning of our lives; there is still so much to do, so much to see, and so much more to experience. As we continue along this new path of our lives, following wherever the twists and turns lead us, one thing we must never forget is this school and the people who joined and supported us on this extraordinarily memorable journey.”

“I have loved attending Mercedes College, not only because of my peers, but the learning. The teachers at this school have fostered this love in us and dedicated their time and effort into making sure that we understand learning does not stop once exams finish or you receive your ATAR. Learning is a skill and opportunity that we get to continuously develop for the rest of our lives.”

“There are two things we can all agree on this year: the school work has been both difficult and relentless, and we couldn’t have made it here without the support of our families. As the voice for all the graduates to our families, thank you for giving us the opportunity to receive an education at Mercedes. We hope we’ve made you proud.”

“Some say that there are friends, there are family, and there are friends who become family. What is so special about this cohort is our connection, our culture, and our love for our home: Mercedes. In any new chapter we open, and any adventures we begin; no matter where we go we will always find our way back home.”

FLEUR DE LIS ISSUE 2 2022

This is the start of your journey, and you have much to look forward to. Having seen just a glimpse of what each of you are capable of, you will, each of you in your own way, help make the world a better place.

The Class of 2022 is diverse. Your ability to make us laugh, smile and simply enjoy each day, combined with your individual and collective example, has enhanced the learning environment at Mercedes.

I hope you have learned from each other, as well as forged life-long ties and lasting friendships that continue to be an important part of your life.

International Student Programme

For the second year in a row, our International Student Programme (ISP) won the StudyTravel Secondary School Award (Australia/New Zealand).

“To win an award voted on by our Education Agents, the very people recommending schools to families across the globe, is incredibly humbling, and a great indicator of the quality of our programme.”

“Having the opportunity to speak directly to the Australian Trade Commission and Education Agents in Vietnam was an experience that filled me with pride. It is an easy task to speak highly of our International Student Programme because I know we provide a world-class standard.”

In 2023, our 55 year anniversary of the ISP, Mercedes College will host 50 international students from 12 nations, and we look forward to celebrating this milestone with them in ways that have a global flavour.

I have always felt welcome and embraced by everyone at Mercedes College. I have become confident, caring, loving, independent, and strong. Thank you, Mercedes College, I will never forget my wonderful time here.

Celebrating Community

MPFA

2022 was another year impacted by COVID and, although the beginning was marked by home-schooling for some and a staggered start, it is satisfying to know that we finished the year having hosted some of our community’s favourite events.

Once again, the Mercedes College Parents and Friends Association (MPFA) was able to support the Middle School Welcome BBQ, a well-attended and popular event, followed by the inaugural Senior School Welcome BBQ. Blessed with perfect weather for both events, we are proud to be able to support these wonderful functions for our community.

This year, for the first time, the MPFA was invited to help cater at Intercol, a Mercedes sporting calendar highlight. Focusing on the netball and football events that draw large crowds, we aimed to enhance the spirit of Intercol and raise some funds. We loved being a part of this wonderful series of events and look forward to being involved again.

The second half of the year saw us once again bringing the Disco and the Sports Fun Day lunch and bake stall to the Junior School. Our volunteers especially love these two events and enjoy watching the children have fun.

Unfortunately bad weather led to the cancellation of our Christmas Picnic, yet we were so lucky that he sun finally shone the following Thursday and Santa was able to visit, with children and families enjoying some fun and festivity in Santa’s Secret Garden after school.

As always, the MPFA is incredibly grateful to our members and volunteers who give their time and energy to help bring these events to our community. We are also grateful for the donations and support we receive from our lovely College families. Whether it be through attending an event, donating items for a bake stall, or choosing to purchase your uniforms from our Second-Hand Uniform Shop, without your support we would not be able to raise the funds that support the College, or grow the incredible connections within our community.

We are very proud to have been able to donate to school projects including:

• $30,000 donation to the revitalised Year 12 space

• $1,000 to the Junior School Sports Department

• $50,000 towards the new Junior School playground

We would like to thank the MPFA committee members and volunteers, the Mercedes College staff, Mrs Anne Morse from MOSA, and the members of FOTA for their support and encouragement. We wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas and we look forward to your continued support in 2023.

Jo Cowain and Christine Kenny MPFA Co-chairs 2022

Hike for History

A new feature on the College calendar, this May we welcomed guests ‘beyond the hedge’ to explore the background of Mercedes College as part of South Australia’s History Festival.

Walking in the footsteps of Olympic medallists, world-class musicians, actors, and even the Premier of South Australia, attendees got an introduction to the historic Strathspey House built in 1899, the founding of the College in 1954, a first-hand account of boarder antics in the 1950s and 60s, and insight into the surrounding landmarks.

A popular morning of insights, keep your eye on the calendar for the 2023 event.

Mercureans

Our Mercurean community has paused functions over the last couple of years while we negotiated COVID, but we’re looking forward to returning with a 2023 Cocktail Party early in the new year – stay tuned!

In the meantime, we are proud to announce that the 2022 Mercurean Award was presented this month to Matthew Dachs in recognition of his scholastic efforts. His tenacity and determination has not dulled his positivity, and we congratulate Matthew on being a generous contributor to the College community. The best of luck for your final year of studies in 2023.

The Mercureans is a fantastic way for past parents to remain part of this great community and stay connected to Mercedes College friends. I encourage all past parents to join us for future functions, please contact the College if you wish to be placed on our mailing list.

Celebrating Students

“It is a delight to see how the entire Junior School embraces French Day, from their costumes to performances, and their enthusiasm for all events. It’s definitely a highlight of the year.”

“There is such value in reading and storytelling, no matter the age of the student, and to see our Junior School representing such a wide array of books for Book Week brings real joy to our librarian hearts.”

“There are more than 11,000 saints revered and worshipped by Christians worldwide, and our Year 6 cohort celebrated their MYP Unit of Inquiry, Saints in the Making, putting a lot of care and effort into costumes representing some well-known and, even more importantly, some littleknown saints from around the world.”

Social media highlights

We love how our community engages with our updates and announcements on social media. It’s a great place to keep up to date with current student activity and Old Scholar achievements, as well as being up to date with opportunities on the horizon. Here are some of your favourite posts.

Bill has been a stalwart member of our Mercedes College family for 44 years and, after a period of long service leave, is retiring at the end of the 2022. His various roles and achievements within the sports faculty are capped by his role in the formation of the Intercollegiate competition with St Ignatius’ College that is now a true calendar highlight.

Well respected, Bill will leave the College with a reputation as the embodiment of our Mercy Keys.

Anne’s passion for Mercedes College is evident to anyone who has interacted with her. Whether during her years as a PE Teacher, or through MOSA Reunions and events, Anne has fostered a deep sense of belonging in many former students for more than 30 years.

Thank you, Anne for your service; we look forward to seeing you at events and special occasions as a guest.

Paul has been an exemplary educator and leader with Mercedes College for 17 years, having joined as Head of Middle School in 2006, then becoming an outstanding Deputy Principal to two Principals since 2016, and acting as Interim Principal in 2019.

As a proud Mercurean, we know that we will continue to see Paul and his family amongst the Mercedes College community into the future.

Other farewells

Other special thank yous go to Irena Hollis for 25 years with the College, and Thu Hoang for 20. We also farewell Judith Lewis after 17 years, and Anne Watson, Jane Trengove, and Jessica Zotti who have all been with us for 16 years.

MOSA Scholarship

We are proud to report that the inaugural recipient of a MOSA Scholarship has successfully graduated from Mercedes College in 2022.

“I am about to finish my last IB exams and graduate very soon and appreciate the care and generosity of the incredible people who made my three years at Mercedes truly joyful and life-changing.”

From the President

As 2022 comes to an end, I reflect upon the significant milestones and highlights of MOSA’s work and the impact of MOSA’s ongoing engagement with its members, the College, and the community.

Memorable highlights include awarding the second-ever MOSA Scholarship, and seeing the 2022 Mercy Award presented to Old Scholar Helen Connolly.

Helen Connolly (Class of 1979) is South Australia’s first Commissioner for Children and Young People and this presentation marks the third successive year that an Old Scholar has received this prestigious award.

The traditional work of MOSA continues, organising cohort reunions, inviting Old Scholars to participate in the Career Mentoring Programme, and running various events on campus during October. At our recent Old Scholar Parents and Teachers Breakfast, it was great to meet and catch up with Old Scholars who return to the College community as parents or teachers. The number of Old Scholars returning to active roles with the College reflects the enduring values instilled by the College in its students.

Logistic and financial support from MOSA to Old Scholar sporting clubs helps them operate on an inclusive and successful basis. I was privileged to attend the Mercedes Old Collegiate Soccer Club’s 30 Year Gala Ball, in which they celebrated another successful year on the field and 30 years as a club. The vibrant and positive culture developed by the Club was especially demonstrated by the commemoration of contributions by past members.

During the Ball we were treated to a panel discussion with Matthew Nicks, coach of the Adelaide Crows Football Club, and Bree Hargrave, Old Scholar (Class of 2000) and recent Commonwealth Games cyclist. Bree’s determination to excel in the face of adversity was inspiring, so much so that she was invited to speak to students at the 2022 MOSA Assembly.

Perhaps the most significant milestone of the year belongs to MOSA’s Executive Officer, Anne Morse, who will retire from her role in early 2023. During her thirteen years as the heart and soul of MOSA, Anne’s unrelenting drive and enthusiasm, as well as her compassion and empathy, has forged and renewed countless connections with students and Old Scholars. From her outstanding recollection of names, years, and the exploits of Old Scholars across the years, to her never-ending encouragement from the sidelines of fields, courts and ovals, Anne’s dedication has formed the backbone of MOSA’s successes. On behalf of the current MOSA Committee, past committee members, and Old Scholars everywhere, I extend my deepest gratitude to Anne and wish her every joy and blessing for whatever adventure she embarks on next.

“From my very first days in Year 10, I felt warmly embraced by students, teachers, and coaches. The energetic volleyball, soccer, cross-country spectacles and laughs in the classroom will forever live happily in my mind and spark moments of thrilling reminiscence.

I congratulate the 2023 Mercedes College Old Scholars’ Association Scholarship recipient and hope they have an equally rewarding three years within this excellent College community.”

The recipient of the second MOSA Scholarship was recently awarded to another very deserving student, who will join Mercedes College in 2023.

This life-changing scholarship is only made possible through the generous donations of our Old Scholar community, and we thank everyone who has contributed across the year.

Where are they now?

Adam Maney (Class of 2001)

After graduation Adam worked in retail management across Bi-Lo, Toys ‘R’ Us, Sanity, EzyDVD and Video Ezy. Then, while recovering from serious back surgeries, he rekindled his love of cinema by absorbing as many DVDs as he could get his hands on.

Former classmates would attest to Adam’s addiction to drama, and that same passion now consumed him again in the form of filmmaking and he set about putting himself through film school.

In 2018 Adam was fortunate enough to start his own production company, Cabana Productions. He has worked with incredible organisations including Foodbank SA, The State Library, NASA, Reconciliation SA, and the City of Onkaparinga. Then, in 2020, Cabana Productions was commissioned to make a short documentary for NITV to be directed by Cabana’s First Nations Officer (and Adam’s best friend for more than a decade), Wayne Campbell, and produced and managed by Adam.

The programme, Raukkan: The Fifty Dollar Church aired on NITV in 2021 and can still be found on the SBS iView catalogue. Cabana Productions has won the Onkaparinga Business Award for Best Professional Services in 2020 and 2021, and Best Marketing, Design or Media Agency in 2022, and earlier this year Adam was inducted into the InDaily Top 40 under 40 Class of 2022.

In 2023 Adam’s company will start production on a feature length documentary about William McHughes, South Australia’s first Indigenous stone mason, with another four feature films on the cards for Adam across the coming decade.

Aidan Scanlon (Class of 2012)

After graduating from Mercedes College, Aidan studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Adelaide, having discovered a passion for motorsport. During this time, he participated in Formula, Society of Automotive Engineers, an international student competition to design, build, and race a small, single-seater car.

In his final year, Aidan took up the opportunity to do an honours thesis with Renault Sport F1 (now Alpine), focused on developing and simulating concepts for a system to improve the car’s grip in slow corners.

From university, Aidan was offered a weekend place on a Supercars team as a data engineer, ensuring the cars’ sensors were calibrated properly and analysing data collected during and after sessions to make sure critical systems were working correctly.

This weekend experience turned into a full time position based in Perth as a design engineer for the team owner, plus part-time data engineering experience for the Supercars team, travelling to races around the country including Bathurst. He also developed equipment and car parts for the racing team, but ultimately found the whirlwind pace of his early career unsustainable and now works happily as a consultant design engineer in Perth.

Kelli Underwood (Class of 1994)

Kelli remembers her time at Mercedes College with fondness, particularly enjoying English lessons and, after being elected Sports Leader in Year 12, resolved to pursue a career in sports journalism.

She studied a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in journalism, at the University of SA, and landed an internship at Radio 5AA that kick-started her career. Answering talkback callers for the KG and Cornesy Show led to a broadcast journey encompassing Murray Bridge, Geelong and Melbourne.

In 2005 she was Radio 3AW’s Sports Reporter and the station’s main football caller, Rex Hunt, invited her into the commentary box one afternoon and the rest, as they say, is history.

Kelli went on to commentate a quarter of AFL with Hunt at the MCG, and although swearing never to do so again, she made the transition from radio to television (Network 10) where she was encouraged by the Head of Sport and current Essendon President, Dave Barham, to commentate again.

Although reluctant, Kelli went on to join the Channel Ten commentary team for two years, broadcasting AFL and netball, gradually learning to become a host and ball-by-ball commentator and learning a difficult craft in a public domain.

When Ten lost the AFL broadcasting rights, Kelli moved to Fox Sports and hasn’t looked back.

She now commentates men’s and women’s Aussie Rules matches, as well as calling on the ABC and hosts national broadcaster’s sports program Offsiders every Sunday morning.

Hard work, passion for the job, a thick skin, and a little luck has led Kelli on a 25 year rollercoaster ride that she loves, and she still carries the lessons learned at Mercedes College with her on the journey.

MOSA MATTERS ISSUE 2 2022

We are saddened by the passing of Old Scholars and past staff, and extend our sincere sympathy to family and friends.

Alexia (Lex) Spehr nee Hannagan (Class of 1957)

After a 30 year journey with cancer, Lex passed away in July in the presence of family at St. Andrews Hospital.

Her endurance, determination, and sheer grit under the stress of treatment, sickness and pain during those years amazed everyone who knew her.

Lex, together with her young sister Merridy, was an inaugural boarder at Mercedes College in 1954. She always looked forward to school reunions and particularly enjoyed catching up with old friends.

She married Ian Spehr and lived at their family farming property “Nooramanoo” at Furner, before retiring to Southend some years ago.

Lex was a much loved and well-known member of the Southeast community and is sadly missed.

Lex leaves behind her husband Ian, two sons, and four grandchildren.

Tristan Goodall (Class of 1990)

Tristan was a warm, generous and caring man, and a talented musician and song writer who had national and international success with his band The Audreys.

Over the course of his musical career Tristan toured extensively to many parts of the world and won four ARIAs (Australian Recording Industry Awards).

He worked for many years in Melbourne teaching English and song writing to prisoners and disengaged youth, arranging and recording their music with the Aardvark Foundation.

Tristan graduated from Mercedes College at the end of Year 12 in 1990. He enjoyed his time at Mercedes contributing to music as well as playing cricket for the school. Tristan returned a few years later after completing a Masters Degree in English to teach guitar, and many remember this time with great fondness.

The world has lost a beautiful and talented soul; his death leaves a void in the lives of many.

Samuel White (Class of 2005)

Sam was considered by all as a gentle, caring, and thoughtful individual with a great ability to connect with people. He achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sustainability and worked as an Environmental Manager in Sydney.

Sam graduated from Mercedes College in 2005 and maintained strong friendships with classmates. He was a keen surfer and loved to spend time with his friends and family, particularly at Goolwa and Cronulla. He was much loved by his family and remembered with fondness by all who knew him.

25 Years of STEP Mimili Treks

The annual Study Thinking Extension Programme (STEP) Mimili Trek has helped a generation of Mercedes College students to redefine how they see themselves and their understanding of Indigenous culture.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart, Makarrata Commission (into Treaty, or agreement-making), ongoing concerns about Indigenous deaths in custody, and disparities within the social fabric of Australia all represent challenges and opportunities for young Australians. In a small way these visits to Mimili, and the relationships forged, have provided a foundation for our students to be directly involved in this process of change.

I am indebted to these 25 years of Treks for changes in my personal and professional life, and the enormous insights it has generated among our students and community.

I conclude by thanking all parents, Old Scholars, volunteers, and students who have participated and contributed to the successes of 25 years of STEP Treks to Mimili.

MOSA Award

The annual MOSA Award is presented to a graduating student who has successfully completed their studies and reached their greatest potential whilst overcoming the additional stress of unique personal challenges.

Old Scholar and committee member Nick Pipinias (Class of 1995), with Sam and Isabella

This year the selection committee could not separate two extremely worthy recipients, and so a MOSA Award was presented to both Sam Hurley, and Isabella Shakib.

We wish Sam and Isabella the very best for their futures beyond Mercedes College, and know that the resilience they have shown this year will hold them in good stead for years to come.

Football

Despite a challenging year, the young Unley Mercedes Jets team laid a great foundation this year for a successful 2023 season.

Upgraded clubrooms and other facilities have been a tremendous asset, and excellent attendance at functions has fostered a fantastic culture around the club. Highlights include the annual Ladies Day, and the belated 50-year Anniversary Dinner recognising the formation of the club in 1970 and the affiliation with the Unley Jets in 2011.

Four Mercedes College Old Scholars were named in the Team of the Half Century: James Khabbaz (Class of 2007), Nathan Chettle (2007), Nick Petch (2010), and Mitch Duval (2014).

Mercedes Old Scholars also featured prominently at the 2022 Awards Night with Ollie Cheesman (2018) named Club Champion, James Khabbaz (2007) awarded Most Consistent Player, and Tom Wallace (2018) awarded Most Improved. In other grades Matt Khabbaz (2007), Tom Stewart (2020), and Noah Hubner-Booth (2020) were recognised for their efforts this year.

The Unley Mercedes Jets join other Old Scholars in thanking MOSA Executive Officer, Anne Morse, for her consistent support, and wish her the very best for a wonderful retirement.

Netball

MOSA Netball entered two teams into the South Australian United Church Netball Association (SAUCNA) winter netball competition with our A4 team finishing sixth overall and B1 team narrowly missing the finals, finishing fifth.

Congratulations to Tayla Lloyde, MVP, Shauna Gallant, Coaches Award, and Madison Steer, Players’ Player (A4), as well as Emma Carkeek, MVP, Michelle Molloy, Coaches Award, and Sarah Crocker, Players’ Player (B1).

After several years at the helm of MOSA netball, Lidia Gray and I will be stepping down and handing the club over to Amber and Tayla Lloyde. We are very proud of our players for their sportsmanship and commitment to both the game and each other, and thank the extended MOSA community for your support over the years.

Particular thanks to Anne Morse – the best cheerleader a club could ask for.

At this stage we have one team registered for the upcoming summer season, starting in mid-October, and are always happy to welcome new players to MOSA netball. If you are interested in joining us for the winter season 2023, starting in April, please let us know at mosanetball@gmail.com.

Soccer

The 2022 season for Mercedes Old Collegians Women’s Soccer was a defining year in improvement and restructure for the future of the club.

Finishing fifth, we have grown immensely as a team, settling into our preferred roles and learning more each week about our rhythm on the pitch.

A great thank you to our sponsors, without whom our club’s success would not be possible, and to our coach Alasdair, who has been instrumental in fostering the positive culture we have today.

Sarah Reynolds (Class of 2014) MOCSC Women’s President

Our MOCSC Men’s B and C teams competed valiantly through a challenging season filled with injury and work commitments that affected coaching staff and team line ups. They finished eighth and ninth respectively, with their determination ever-present.

For our 1A division team, MOCSC proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with, going undefeated for 15 straight matches. Although missing the top spot by one point this year, their season has solidified the team’s goal of taking out the title in 2023.

Congratulations to all of our players, as well as our coaches Matt Smith, Jack Davison, Andy Kay, Mark Abraham, James Burrows, Darren Lange, and Paul Keogh. And, finally, we couldn’t have done it without support from the sidelines.
