egend has it that Sir Francis Drake could barely look up from his game of bowls when the Spanish Armada approached, but the reaction from today’s visitors to Plymouth Hoe was markedly different when the new MercedesBenz GLA effortlessly sailed into view.

The latest addition to the Mercedes-Benz SUV line-up provided our stylish and spacious carriage to Britain’s Ocean City and what a perfect travelling companion it proved to be – one that, thanks to its dynamic and muscular appearance, drew plenty of admiring glances when we parked up to peruse the many sights located around Plymouth’s natural heart.

Unlike the 1588 approach of foreign battleships that Drake probably knew full well would be held up by winds and tide to allow him to finish his game, our journey to Plymouth was much smoother and considerably safer too.

With its agile handling, the GLA is equally at home on main carriageways as it is on country roads and it’s even equipped with an off-road comfort suspension should you really want to put it to the test.

Savouring the journey in the ARTICO leather seats whilst being precisely directed via the large screen media display, we could sit back safe in the knowledge that the GLA boasts an impressive and extensive safety specification that includes ATTENTION ASSIST to keep you alert at the wheel and the lane-changing aid Blind Spot Assist.

Thousands of visitors descend on Plymouth every year to enjoy its heady mix of history. A vibrant buzz exists all-year round but is heightened in the summer by must-see events such as MTV Crashes Plymouth (27th-28th July) and the British Firework Championships (9th-10th August).

Whether you’re visiting the Hoe’s many landmarks, taking a stroll along the promenade, people-watching from the chic bars and eateries or admiring the vista across Plymouth Sound, the Hoe is a busy place. But securing a parking space was made easy with the help of the car’s reversing camera with 180-degree view.

Owners can opt for a 360-degree option if they prefer.

We started our visit at the eastern end where the Hoe’s military importance is illustrated by The Royal Citadel, a 17th Century fortress originally built to ward off the Dutch. It is occupied now by 29 Commando Royal Artillery.

There’s a bird’s-eye view of the Sound from the 72-foot high Smeaton’s Tower that originally stood on the Eddystone reef.

But, if heights aren’t your thing, then you can take in the beautiful surroundings whilst taking a dip in Tinside Lido. The Grade II-listed, art-deco style outdoor pool has been voted amongst Europe’s top 10 and is a great place to swim or chill.

After a photo beneath the statue that commemorates Drake and his circumnavigation of the globe, we returned to the luxurious comfort of the GLA for our homeward voyage - very much looking forward to future exploration of our own around the South West aboard this supreme SUV.

THE DIESEL DEBATE

ast year, an all-time high of 1.3 million diesel cars were acquired by UK drivers attracted by the high performance and low fuel consumption offered by these models.

This March alone, a further 250,000 new diesel cars were registered – a monthly record according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Amidst its popularity, there is currently speculation about the future of diesel motoring. However, Mercedes-Benz are committed to the future of diesel cars and continue to lead in innovation regarding cleaner engines. This is signified by its significant investment in ongoing research and development into the reduction of engine emissions.

Chancellor Phillip Hammond’s Autumn Statement in November is expected to expand on his Spring Budget promise to “explore the appropriate tax treatment for diesel vehicles” as the Government continues to look at ways of improving air quality.

Industry experts anticipate that there will be action to target older vehicles not benefiting from the advanced diesel technology already employed by the latest Mercedes-Benz models - all of which meet the current Euro 6 standards. This includes the possible diesel scrappage scheme put forward in a consultation document by the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to target the most polluted areas of the country.

As part of its commitment to a diesel future, Mercedes-Benz has not only drawn on more than 80 years of know-how but it has also invested some €3 billion in the development and production of a completely new diesel engine family.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY “In Autocar’s opinion, diesel car ownership must not be off the agenda, because a bedrock of diesel sales is necessary to keep CO2 levels falling... There is no doubt that the cleanest cars, with both particulate and NOx outputs ‘trapped’, are EU6 models produced from 2014. We’d choose one of those.

This technology achieves new benchmarks in terms of efficiency, emissions and environmental compatibility and means that Mercedes-Benz continues to be at the forefront in terms of meeting European legislation. Indeed, when it unveiled the new four-cylinder E-Class Saloon last year, it became the first manufacturer to launch a diesel model to meet the stricter EU test procedure being introduced from September 2017.

Manufacturer confidence in the stability of the market is illustrated by the ongoing strength of residual based finance products. As reflected by the size of the monthly payment, the future value of the vehicle being financed is guaranteed at the outset of the agreement. With the vast majority of cars being acquired in this manner, owners are protecting their investment against unplanned depreciation. Furthermore, because the ownership decision is deferred until the end of the agreement, individuals are in a position to make a more informed decision on their motoring future.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) already bill the new testing structure to be “the world’s toughest-ever emissions standard”. For starters, the new Real-World Driving Emissions (RDE) test will be more reflective of actual driving and be conducted out on the road with a portable emissions measurement system as opposed to the previous inspection format that was undertaken on a rolling road in a controlled laboratory environment.

The all-aluminium power unit onboard the latest E-Class is 17 kilogrammes lighter and emits 13 per cent less carbon dioxide and 80 per cent less nitrogen oxide than its predecessor.

However, that is certainly not to the detriment of performance as the Saloon delivers noticeable increases in brake horsepower together with a 13 per cent improvement in fuel consumption.

THE E-CLASS 220 D AUTO DIESEL

Whilst the diesel debate is ongoing, current and future Mercedes-Benz owners can be reassured by a continued faith in diesel’s place in the marketplace and the commitment of manufacturers to meet stricter emissions guidelines. Leading the way in this movement, every new Mercedes-Benz on sale today meets Euro 6 standards meaning they are exempt from the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone charges. Equally, if the scrappage scheme is rolled out, our modern diesel-engine cars would be unaffected. In the premium car sector, there is no doubt that diesel engines have a future.

VISUAL HEALTH CHECK

SEE HOW IT HAPPENS

T

he StarView Visual Health Check service allows you to see your vehicle through the eyes of a MercedesBenz technician.

Every vehicle that enters a Mercedes-Benz South West workshop for a service or repair will undergo a comprehensive 32-point vehicle health check. The new StarView service captures footage taken by the technician as he or she examines the vehicle. This is then emailed directly to the customer who can see for themselves any issues, listen to the technician’s recommendations and can make a fully-informed decision about whether to have the work taken out or not.

Firstly, the technician will check that all lights are functioning correctly and that the windscreen clears properly when using its wipers. Vehicle fluid levels are checked as well as the engine itself; monitoring for any leakages or displacement.

Once the vehicle is raised, you will be shown the condition of its brake discs and pads, the suspension and the health of all tyres. Underneath, the technician will check the under tray covers, highlighting any leaks or breaks. Finally, the exhaust system will be examined for cracks and to make sure it is securely attached.

STEVE MILDOON Currently enjoying his fourth year on the Mercedes-Benz service team, Steve was welcomed in June in his new position as Assistant Service Manager at our Exeter dealership.

He is no stranger to the industry having started his career as a trainee mechanic at 16 years old. Upon moving to Exeter he then spent 9 years with Volkswagen before joining MercedesBenz of Exeter as Workshop Controller back in 2013.

SMART ELECTRIC DRIVE

Ten years after the original smart electric drive cars appeared on the streets of Britain, the fourth-generation model is unveiled and is definitely deserving of a plug as it establishes several landmarks for the brand.

The launch of the latest smart electric drive makes smart the only manufacturer worldwide to offer its entire model range with both combustion engines and pure battery electric drive. That’s because for the first time, the forfour will be available as an allelectric version as well as the fortwo and cabrio, which also sets a precedent by becoming the only electric soft-top on the market.

Performance over its predecessors is much improved and the 60 kW electric car delivers agile acceleration together with an impressive 160 Nm of torque.

How exciting would it be to see your artwork on a car?

We gave local students just that chance.

This year saw the return of the MercedesTrophy to the fairways of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Players battled it out through the stages to represent the South West at the Regional Finals at St Georges Hill, Surrey, and in hope of reaching the National Final at the prestigious home of golf, St Andrews.

Having set a challenging live brief to design students at the Plymouth College of Art, they produced an impressive collection of special edition exterior designs for both our smart fortwo and smart forfour cars.

Only one winner would see their creation in situ. The chosen designs were created by 3rd year student Sarah Court for their visual effect and combined commercial appeal.

When asked about her inspiration for the designs, she said; “Given the two different audiences for the smart fortwo and the smart forfour, I began by loosely exploring themes of order versus chaos. From those early experiments, I created more structured, textural patterns for the smart forfour, alongside developing an inky, more spontaneous personal drawing of mine that seemed perfect for the smart fortwo.”

OUR HIGHLIGHTS All summer we’ve been travelling around the West Country visiting you at some of our favourite shows and events. Some of our highlights this year have included the Devon County Show with Mercedes-Benz of Exeter, enjoying the Polo at Millfield School with Mercedes-Benz of Taunton, battling the indecisive Cornish weather at the Royal Cornwall Show with Mercedes-Benz of Truro and joining the troops at Armed Forces Day with Mercedes-Benz of Plymouth.

The quiet roads of Devon were once again overcome with the bark of an AMG engine or two as Mercedes-Benz South West opened doors on our Dream Car Event at the Great Barn on the 22nd June. Teaming up with Kitsons Solicitors, we invited guests to join us for a day experiencing some of the finest vehicles Mercedes-Benz has to offer.

The cars were put through their paces on the tight bends surrounding Dartmoor National Park before tearing towards Exeter. Some of the cars showcased included the remarkable AMG GT S, the wild C 63s and the ultimate in luxury driving the S Class.

W

ith a reputation built on formidable performance, it seems quite fitting that AMG is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the brand in the strongest position in its history.

Last year, the launch of 10 new models and the widespread appeal of the six-cylinder 43 series saw sales rocket to record levels as almost 100,000 Mercedes-AMG vehicles were sold.

From the humble workshop in which AMG was launched in 1967 by its founders Hans Werner Aufrecht & Erhard Melcher, the company has established itself as the sporting spearhead of Daimler AG. Once serving only private racing teams, it now boasts an ever-increasing following amongst all motorists as the statistics show.

What started as a two-man operation is now an organisation employing around 1,500 people. Nevertheless, the AMG brand has retained its commitment to the ultimate in performance and its ‘one man, one engine’ philosophy, whereby each power unit is hand-crafted by a sole engine-builder.

AMG first came to prominence in 1971 when Aufrecht and Melcher’s 6.8-litre engine powered a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL to victory in its class and second place overall in the 24 Hours of Spa race in Belgium.

300 SEL Over the years that followed, AMG began equipping more models wearing the three-pointed star with its performance technology.

The development of a completely independent cylinder head with four valves per cylinder was followed by the appearance of the formidable AMG 300 E 5.6 Coupé. With its top speed of over 188mph it was nicknamed ‘The Hammer’ by the American press.

It won 50 DTM victories between 1988 and 1993 as part of the official racing partnership between AMG and Daimler-Benz.

New AMG GT C Collaboration with Mercedes-Benz began in 1990. In 1993, the C 36 AMG was the first production model to be launched as part of the collaboration agreement. The SLS AMG became the first car to be developed entirely by Mercedes-AMG in 2009 after its creation as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG four years earlier.

Marking ’50 Years of Driving Performance’ in style in 2017 is a special anniversary model, the 4.0-litre V8 AMG GT C Roadster Edition 50. Looking to the future is the high-performance hybrid Mercedes-AMG GT Concept unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. It combines a highly-efficient V8 petrol engine with a powerful electric motor and modular battery to unleash 816hp and acceleration from 0-62mph in less than three seconds.

INSPIRING TALENT I

t is 20 years this summer since Peter Trego made his debut for Somerset, when he turned out for the Second XI at the age of 16.

Now more than 560 appearances, 21,000 runs and 614 wickets later, ‘Tregs’ is enjoying the twilight of a successful career but also the opportunity to give something back to the sport in his role as a Mercedes-Benz South West ambassador.

As part of the Group’s inspirational talks, Peter has visited various locations across the South West including Blundell’s School and Cullompton and Ilminster Cricket Clubs. Here he provides youngsters with an insight on the life of a professional cricketer plus tips and advice for those already playing or relatively new to the game.

“The inspirational talks are a great way for Mercedes-Benz South West to interact with the communities around their dealerships but also for me to put something back into cricket at grassroots level,” he said.

“Having played cricket professionally for 20 years, there are things I can pass on about my experience that can’t be picked up from a book - like how to prepare for games, playing big shots and the importance of keeping fit and healthy,” he added. “The sessions are something that I really enjoy and the feedback from the youngsters is that they do too, which is brilliant as we want the sessions to be a fun experience.”

ME AND MERCEDES It’s not only out in the middle where Peter enjoys making runs. The self-confessed fan of the threepointed star drives a Mercedes-AMG C 43 Saloon but also uses a GLA when travelling with his family – wife Claire and children Amelia, 15, Davis, 12, and Dexter, 9. He’s also owned a C 63 AMG and M-Class.

“As I cover a fair few miles during the season, comfort is paramount and the C 43 is fantastic without being too ostentatious and it has plenty of on-road kudos - receiving nods of approval from people who really know their cars,” he said.

he benefits of the new petrol-electric E-Class hybrid are clear to see for James Bill, co-owner of Bill Opticians.

Mr Bill was the first customer of Mercedes-Benz of Exeter to take delivery of an E 350 e Saloon – the possibility of zero emission motoring and subsequent low running costs being amongst the main factors that really caught his eye.

The model is also able to strike a perfect balance between economy of up to 134.5mpg (combined) and performance of 0-62mph acceleration in just 6.2 seconds.

“The tax advantages were key in switching to a hybrid because of the significantly lower CO2 emission and having looked at lots of cars of this kind, for me, the E-Class was head and shoulders above everything else in this sector,” he explained.

“Having come out of a CL 500, I really thought that I would hate the electric mode but I have to say that I’m impressed as you can really feel the acceleration when you pull away and the change between petrol and electric is absolutely seamless too.”
