Kuwaiti Printers Set to Grow with KBA Technology It was back in 1968 that Jassim Mubarak Al-Jassim founded the company Al-Resala Printing Press in Kuwait. As a journalist with entrepreneurial instinct, his idea was to establish the company as the first address for modern, high-quality publications, based upon the principle of customer proximity. In the meantime, however, the impacts of media transformation are also being felt by Kuwait and AlResala: The company was forced to decommission one of its two web presses. In the sheetfed sector, on the other hand, it still sees growing demand in the market and has decided to invest accordingly in the future. General manager Marzouq AlJassim: “We considered all the possible scenarios and analysed corresponding press types and configurations. And we came to the conclusion that the Rapida 105 is currently the best choice for us. We are continuing to observe the market, however, and could well imagine an investment in another press from the Rapida series as the next step.”

For Noureddine Amalou from the sales department at KBA-Sheetfed Solutions, the instable political situation in the region is an important factor for the currently subdued readiness to invest in the Middle East. Even so, there are good opportunities for continued growth and development for healthy enterprises. Al-Resala Printing Press, for example, is financially sound, has earned a very positive reputation on the market and can rely on the service of the Al-Kharafi Group. Al-Resala has worked with presses from KBA from the very begin-

ning and is extremely satisfied with their quality and production performance. The new Rapida 105, a five-colour model with coater and extended delivery, entered production at the beginning of the year. Adel Al-Salem, press manager at AlResala Printing Press: “Our team really appreciates the concept. For us, it is not maximum automation which counts, but rather the mature technical basis of the press – things like the excellent paper travel, the perfect interaction of the inking and dampening units, and the ease of operation.”

Dainichiseika Invests in Flexo Technology From Koenig & Bauer Dainichiseika Color & Chemicals Mfg. Co., Ltd. is one of Japan's leading ink manufacturers. To further advance the development of new inks for the printing of flexible packaging, the company recently decided to invest in an ultra-modern flexo press system from KBA-Flexotecnica, a subsidiary of Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA). “With the EVO XD, we have found exactly the press we were looking for. The technology and quality of the press meet all our high demands,” says Naoki Tanimoto, technical division manager for Dainichiseika. The EVO XD is to be used to test new water-based inks, specifically for printing on plastic films. At the same time, packaging printers will be able to run trials of innovative materials without interrupting their own production. “We are moving forward nicely with KBA-Flexotecnica. The good cooperation with KBADigital & Web in the areas of design and development, production and service is bearing fruit. Together,

we can implement new ideas and customer-specific solutions even better and faster,” adds Christoph Müller, member of the executive board of Koenig & Bauer AG and CEO of KBAFlexotecnica. The EVO XD is set for commissioning at the production facility in Tokyo by September 2017. Dainichiseika Color & Chemicals was founded in 1931 and has grown constantly ever since. More than 4,000 employees work for the company around the world. Dainichiseika is well established in numerous fields of ink manufacture, and today develops, manufactures and sells a wide range of both functional printing inks and offset inks for flyers, books and packaging materials, as well as inorganic, organic and prepared pigments for printing, paints and other applications. The eight-colour CI flexo press chosen by Dainichiseika is a version engineered for a web width of 1320 mm and cut-off lengths between 370 and 850 mm from the successful EVO XD

series for printing with water-based inks on a broad diversity of substrates such as films, very thin and sensitive “breathable” LDPE, laminated materials and paper. It offers maximum flexibility for the most varied packaging applications and incorporates very energy-efficient dryer systems. The EVO XD uses modules of the current X series and was designed to meet demands for fast job changes, low makeready waste and high productivity even with short runs. The automatic impression system AIF, the highly efficient washing system “Speedy Clean” and the integrated print error detection system enable production to commence without delay.

Colter & Peterson to Focus on Large Format Productivity and Efficiency at SGIA Following a trend that took root at last year’s show in Las Vegas, Colter & Peterson (booth 3150) will be giving printers and converters more of what they want at the SGIA Expo in New Orleans. From October 10-12, show visitors can learn how the 141-inch SABER X-15 PLUS paper cutter with Microcut can improve productivity 50% or more in most shops, while providing a unique edge in the large and wide format arenas.

ME Printer September 2017

“The interest in large or wide format paper cutters emerged about 18 months ago and it really began to expand between drupa and SGIA last year,” commented Bruce Peterson, President of North America’s largest independent distributor of paper cutters and paper handling equipment. “Most companies we talked to understood the potential a large capacity cutter with smart electronics would have in their marketplaces. Since then, we’ve delivered many

6

machines that have made a very big impact for our clients and their customers.” The SABER brand line, including the X-15 PLUS, does more than just cut paper. Large and wide format customers are using it to trim a wide range of substrates, from E Flute corrugated, paper and foam board, to thick styrene, Coroplast and plastic. An ideal solution to cut large wall panels, backdrop and P-O-P displays, and poster work, Peterson says his latest X-15 PLUS large format users are benefitting additionally from the productivity spike. “One of our west coast customers is trimming four sides of 126-inch sheets of paper. He’s really happy that he can spin the sheet without backing it out of the SABER,” informed Peterson. “They also save time during layout by using the Microcut JDF files. Another customer told me how nice and easy

it is to use their Microcut system with a 15-inch touchscreen. He likes the accuracy of the SABER blade and how he just needs to hit a button to make a cut once the file goes through.” Having Microcut makes a huge difference, not only in saving time but by improving capacity. “With most competitive shops being nearly equal in terms of quality, price and service, you have to find something else that sets you apart from the competition,” says Peterson. ‘A Midwest customer with a SABER X-15 PLUS told me it’s a capacity factor for them. With the machine and Microcut, they have essentially doubled their capacity. Almost all of these customers understand that if you are cutting square or rectangles, you’re going to be tremendously more productive piling up the work and cutting it all instead of one at a time. Before investing in the SABER X-15 PLUS, that’s how they had to do it.”

Copy Express of Lexington Sees Huge Gains with CRON-ECRM Blackwood Plates Copy Express of Lexington, Kentucky recently purchased the CRON CTP system with the Blackwood plates. After purchasing a new RMGT 940 offset press, the shop realized their old half-size plate making system, which worked fine for the older presses they were running, just couldn’t produce the necessary plates for the larger, 8up offset press they were installing. Copy Express bought both the press and CTP system from Graphco, the distributor, who recommended CRON-ECRM as the perfect solution to complement their new press. Copy Express has seen tremendous growth in recent years, with president and owner Mark Hicks noting that he has been making strategic acquisitions over the last several years to facilitate that expansion. “That’s how I grow as quickly as I want,” he noted. The combined

company — which has consolidated under the Copy Express brand — is now the largest commercial printer in the area. And while relationships and maintaining the human element is a key driver of the shop’s success, the need for high-quality, versatile machines has also been increasingly critical. He needed faster speeds, larger sizes, and added features like UV coating to continue to grow the business. In the end, he went with the RMGT 940 press, trading in two older presses for the one new machine, and increasing his capacity and capabilities at the same time. Which meant he needed to upgrade the rest of his equipment alongside it. “We can now make plates faster, at a higher quality, and for a lesser price point than our previous system,” said Hicks. “We looked at several alterna-

tives, and one of them might have saved us a bit of money on the front end, but, frankly, the plates were more expensive once you factored in the chemistry needed to stand up to UV ink. CRON-ECRM’s Blackwood plates are very high quality, very cost-competitive, and the whole unit saves on energy costs across the board. It was a no-brainer.” “Mark knew exactly what he wanted when it comes to how his business will continue to grow,” said Chris Manley, President of Graphco. “The CRON-ECRM Blackwood plates are a key element to ensuring there are no barriers in his way. With this one-two punch of the RMGT press and CRON-ECRM plates, there is nothing his shop can’t produce. II am looking forward to serving him and his company as they continue their amazing growth.”

Mediaclip, a leading developer of product personalization software, will be exhibiting in booth 4543 at PRINT 17 in Chicago, IL. The event will take place at McCormick Place from September 10th – 14th. At the trade show, the company will be presenting the newest innovations of its stateof-the-art software, as well as sharing industry expertise in creating market opportunities within the booming product personalization market. The fact that any type of printable material can be personalized offers a

unique chance to spark conversations with creative PSPs who are willing to bring product customization to the next level with Mediaclip. “The theme of PRINT 17, ‘Metamorphosis,’ is especially engaging for us this year as we celebrate our software’s 10th anniversary,” says Marion Duchesne, CEO at Mediaclip. “From the beginning, we have striven to evolve our solution so that customers can get the most out of their investment and grow their businesses. Thus, we have made sure to adapt and address the changing technology standards, the shifting needs

of today’s shoppers and the new way by which people communicate and consume information.” During PRINT 17, attendees can also expect to get a glimpse into Mediaclip’s 10-year metamorphic journey as the staff discusses how it all began and how the company earned its status as the leader in product personalization software development today. Friedheim International Plans a Big Presence at IPEX 2017 Following on from a year packed full of successful exhibitions and open houses, Friedheim International will be exhibiting at IPEX 2017 with one of the largest stands at the show, boasting some of the most advanced print finishing equipment on offer today. At IPEX 2014, Friedheim International launched the MBO M80 range of versatile modular folders, at IPEX 2017 they will proudly present the UK launch of the MBO K80 high speed combination folder, along with the UK launch of the Bograma Servo 550 BASIC short run die-cutter. Joining these two machines will be the KAMA ProFold 74 running over 5000 capacity folders and hour, an Herzog + Heymann creasing line running direct mail work, Komfi’s crown jewel the Sagitta 76 laminator along with the best-selling Komfi Amiga 52 with OTF ready to run custom foiling jobs at the show. The line-up wraps up with a 78 and a 115 guillotine from Schneider and BaumannWohlenberg respectively and a Zechini Roby Junior 2 compact, semi-automatic case maker. Although Friedheim International is predominantly showing post-

press and converting machines at this year’s show, the full range of equipment and divisions will be represented by its national sales managers along with its sales specialists. Mark Bristow, Managing Director says “We decided to go with a much larger stand this year due to the current demand for our equipment. With shorter runs, the requirement for automation, the consolidation of various businesses and the need to be more economical with their work flow, our customers look to us to give them the best advice and best equipment to meet these challenges.” Friedheim International has always enjoyed a rich relationship with IPEX so it was decided to go big this year. Stand F350 is 195m2 and will be a complete production work space, with actual real-world jobs running throughout each day. Format and job changes live on the stand, along with best work practices from Friedheim’s team of experienced technicians and demonstrators. “It’s a great testimony to the relationship Friedheim International has with IPEX that they will be supporting us again this year with a bigger than ever presence, launching new

solutions as well as showing the breadth of their offering.”, commented IPEX Event Director, Rob Fisher. Stuart Bamford, National Sales Manager – Post-Press says “IPEX is the perfect venue to launch the MBO K80 folder for the UK market, we did it last time with the M80 and it turned out really well for us, we hope to recapture some of the magic this year too. The K80 is perfectly poised for the UK market, at its price point, there isn’t a faster, more quality folder with this level of automation and advanced control, and the customers we took to the Baumann open house who saw it in June, were truly impressed.” IPEX is the UK’s longest running international print show. The event takes place from 31st October to 3rd November 2017 at the NEC in Birmingham. IPEX 2017 will be a showcase of innovation, technology and print in action, covering a range of applications including printing, software, digital, and finishing.

Domino to Launch Fluorescent Security Ink for its K600i Printer Domino Digital Printing Solutions is launching a new fluorescent ink for its K600i piezo drop on demand ink jet printer at Labelexpo Europe 2017 (Stand 9A60, Brussels Expo, 25th – 28th September 2017). Ideal for security printing and brand protection, this latest addition to Domino’s ink range, UV80CL, will help businesses battle counterfeiting and forgery. Domino’s UV80CL ink prints clear, but fluoresces green, under an ultraviolet UV-A 365nm blacklight. It can be used to print 2D codes, barcodes, alpha numeric codes, images, graphics and personalised data printing, all of which may be used in security, authentication and anti-counterfeit applications. The combination of printing variable data with green fluorescence provides a high complexity rating which would be extremely difficult to replicate. This makes it ideal to use to add security marks and features to

currency, stamps, tax stamps, passports and certificates to prevent forgery, tampering or counterfeiting of such items. It can also be used to incorporate security features onto labels and packaging for traceability to safeguard against counterfeiting and parallel trade. The Domino K600i printer can be easily integrated into an existing web-fed press, or used as a standalone roll-to-roll solution or finishing line, and the UV80CL

ink is compatible with standard medias including polyethylene, polypropylene and coated and uncoated papers. “In today’s price competitive and technology savvy marketplace, it is imperative that brand owners establish a strong and effective anti-counterfeiting and brand protection programme to safeguard their brands,” says Mark Herrtage, Aftercare Product Manager at Domino Printing Solutions. “With that in mind, the Domino UV80CL fluorescent ink provides security, label and packaging converters with an added value offering to assist brand owners on this quest.” “We’re looking forward to meeting visitors on our stand at Labelexpo, where we can demonstrate how this new ink can help businesses address their security and brand protection needs.”

Zünd Launches Laser Module LM 100W

Soft signage offers tremendous potential in the vast and diverse world of visual communication media. Polyester fabrics are beginning to conquer applications previously ruled by paper and PVC substrates. To facilitate cutting

this material, Zünd has developed the LM 100W laser module. It is designed to cut polyester textiles and simultaneously seal the edges. Frayed edges become a thing of the past. The LM 100W automates what has long been a separate, manual operation and thereby also eliminates the need for seaming. In addition, the LM 100W delivers impeccable cut quality and flawless repeatability. Because laser cutting is a touch-free process, no hold-down is required during processing.

It takes one operator a few simple steps and a matter of minutes to convert a Zünd cutter to a fullblown laser-cutting system. Once the laser job is completed, it is just as easy to reconfigure the cutter for the next application. The Zünd laser module is equipped with an air-cooled CO2 100W laser with a processing speed of 44m/144 ft per min. As a Class 1 laser, it requires no special safety gear such as protective glasses. The laser module is fully enclosed, which provides reliable protection for the operator.

ME Printer September 2017

With the LM 100W, Zünd is introducing a laser module for sign & display applications. The purpose of this new laser-cutting system is to cut polyester fabrics and seal the edges at the same time. This addition further amplifies the versatility of Zünd’s modular, wideformat cutting systems.

This made the IS29 the perfect choice for meeting our short-run variable print needs,” said Rick Reindl, co-owner of Reindl Printing. “Having experience with the print quality and quick drying capabilities of Komori’s H-UV system on our eight-color GL40, we were sold when we learned that the IS29 offered UV inkjet characteristics as well as perfecting. We serve businesses nationwide and gaining the ability to cut production time in half and take advantage of the fast curing speeds and durability UV offers were key drivers in the purchase.”

The company noted other positives of the IS29 included the fact the press runs a 23x29-inch sheet, ideal for sixup print production with full variable print applications that can come right off the machine to finishing and get out the door quickly. The IS29 operates in both perfecting or straight mode, does not require pre-coated paper and runs at speeds of 3,000 sheets per hour in straight mode. “The growing popularity in the marketplace of the Impremia IS29 is very exciting,” said Jacki Hudmon, senior vice president of new business development for Komori America. “Reindl Printing has been a part of the Komori family since 1997 and we are thrilled they have chosen to add this innovative press to their fleet of Komori presses.”

Sustainability is Part of Our Integrated Approach to Business: Konica Minolta Sharon Heymann, the Senior Consultant Sustainability, Corporate Branding and Sustainability, International Marketing Division, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe GmbH, speaks to ME Printer about how her company is tackling sustainability in printing Many companies are pushing for sustainability in the printing industry. How do you as a company that provides printing products and solutions make sure you contribute to the cause?

Technological innovation, digitalisation and globalisation are spurring “creative destruction” in various industries worldwide. In this era, we believe it is crucial that our business helps to provide solutions to social and environmental issues so that we can achieve our management vision of making Konica Minolta a global company, which is vital to society and hence creates real value. By using the core technology and expertise that we have built up throughout our history to produce products and services that help to resolve society’s issues, Konica Minolta can achieve sustainable growth as a company that society can depend on.

ME Printer September 2017

Our Eco Vision 2050 and medium term plans help us to pursue this goal. Addressing environmental problems such as climate change is a pressing issue for the global community. Already in 2009, Konica Minolta established the Eco Vision 2050, a long-term environmental plan that aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over the product life cycle compared to the values of 2005.

28

It further promotes recycling and effective use of Earth’s limited resources as well as the restoration and preservation of biodiversity. Reducing the environmental impact of business operations by containing CO2 emissions and

considerate usage of resources helps to realise a sustainable society and also creates economic value as a result of cost savings.

Economic concerns, technological threat and uncertain futures have contributed to a crisis of confidence in print. Do you agree to this statement? If yes, what more needs to be done? Different influencing factors cause the situation in the printing industries to change. In these modern times, innovations in digital technology have led to the introduction of new products and businesses previously unthinkable, and the makeup of industries continues to undergo dramatic change. However, Konica Minolta does not see this as a threat, but as a chance for new developments and growth.

Printing companies should use the potential of digitalisation such as small print lots and short delivery times. Furthermore, Konica Minolta supports printers with new possibilities to grade up print products such as embellishment. In addition, with its digital marketing approach Konica Minolta helps printers to use the full potential of cross media communication by combining printed and digital media. So, printers can provide marketing solutions in both physical and digital form that contribute to every step of the marketing process, from analysing their consumer preferences and purchasing behaviour to improving their customers’ product awareness and driving sales.

What sorts of factors are shaping today’s print industry?

The most important factor is flexibility. As a provider for printing services in present times it is essential to be able to react to the changes in the markets quickly or even to be able to anticipate them. A shift towards digital media for example will definitely change the printing industry. Another important factor is knowledge transfer for the users of our machines. Especially in printing, knowledge of what is possible with the present systems and how to adapt to changes in customer requirements to fully take advantage of their potential is extremely important. In that matter, we are building up the “PROKOM” community for Konica Minolta users. With this project we do not only encourage networking and knowledge sharing for our customers, but we also provide expert know-how, business tools, strategic consulting as well as practical help. With an elite membership users and business owners also gain access to knowledge databases, an e-learning forum, webinars, additional support services and become a part of the PROKOMAcademy. By this, Konica Minolta is helping to address factors, which can decide on the future success of companies.

What are the challenges that block the pathway towards sustainability in the printing industry? The main challenges are of environmental nature. Resource con-

sumption of printing machines, paper-usage and energy consumption along the value chain are the drivers here. Konica Minolta is taking active part in reducing the impact of these factors with the Eco Vision 2050 (see Q1), because we see these challenges as opportunities and not as obstacles. Specific examples with regards to energy savings are: Offering of carbon neutral printing in climate protection with CO2-footprinting, -reduction programs and -offsetting projects as a holistic package. Furthermore, all our machines are as energy efficient as possible. Nearly all of the printing machines carry the prestigious European Energy Star, which is only awarded to best-in-class energy efficient products. Additionally, Konica Minolta recommends the printers to use recycled paper, which saves a lot of resources, energy, chemicals and water during its production and recycle process.

New media options, digital technology implementations and green expectations can breed market uncertainty. In such a scenario, how can printers make sure their new investments can bring in maximum RoI? For printers nowadays it is essential to know who their customers are and what they need to be successful. At the moment we see a strong development towards targeting, to get the right piece of print to the right people at the right time. Hence, Konica Minolta is helping its operators, with its expertise to learn to assess what their customers want and need to build up a level of mutual understanding.

How according to you can printers reshape their businesses by aligning commercial and environmental goals?

The environmental impact of business operations is becoming increasingly important for the image of modern businesses. Providers of print services need to think about future developments to differentiate themselves from their competition. Gaining new customers and meeting the needs of existing ones is getting increasingly difficult. With “enabling carbon neutrality” Konica Minolta is offering a solution, which not only helps to make this process easier but also gives the customers the chance to become a part of a more sustainable society. In this way, Konica Minolta operators can convince existing and potential customers that they can increase their revenues in the long run while helping to preserve the environment. Furthermore, the program gives Konica Minolta’s customers the chance to emphasise on their own commitment to climate protection. The all-in-one CO2 offsetting service, which we offer for the unavoidable emissions that occur during the print processes, is a simple way for our customers to contribute to the achievement of their company’s climate protection goals. As in a few markets goals of this nature are not voluntary but mandatory this service offers an easy way to save money as well. Additionally, environmental considerations have a high public profile. In many ways this has influence on the operational success of the companies. Environmentally friendly department and organisation profiles are becoming an important factor to attract highly skilled workforce, which is the basis for each effective company.

Do you believe use of renewable resources can

pave way for sustainability? If yes, what initiatives has your company taken to make sure your products and solutions offer ecological benefits?

We believe it is indispensable to have a strategy on the reduction of resources and energy. Not only is it important to use renewable energy, but as well that the resources are used with maximum efficiency to minimise the environmental impact.

With our carbon neutral printing program, we have recently selected a new wind energy project on the island of Aruba in the Caribbean Sea and will soon start to support it. The project helps to reduce CO2 emissions by roughly 150,000 tons per year. Being the first project of this kind in the Caribbean Sea it also serves as an important case study for best practice in renewable energy production for the whole region. In addition, we started in Germany for example to purchase only green (renewable) energy for all our offices and the HQ. These are just a few examples of what Konica Minolta is doing to foster sustainability within society at large. Since the program started in 2015, we managed to cancel 2,600,000 kg CO2. Additionally, our event appearances at key industry fairs such as Drupa or CeBIT are operated in a carbon neutral way.

Can you point out a couple of products and solutions from your portfolio, which focus on sustainability? Konica Minolta does not see sustainability as a product feature to focus on. Sustainability is part of our integrated approach to business. For each and every operation we are taking on, sustainability is a key factor to be considered. It lies within the nature of our company to act sustainably and be a helpful organisation that supports solving environmental and social issues – simply an organisation the global community can rely on. Therefore, nearly all of our products and solutions consider this approach.

ME Printer September 2017

The requirements of the markets change quickly which is why printers have to become more than just manufacturers. They have to be able to consult their clients, to provide solutions and services, which link their set of offerings and skills to the exact needs of their clients. Like this, the printers will be able to take maximum advantage of their

hardware and get the most value out of their investments towards printing machinery.

Smithers Pira Forecasts Functional and Industrial Printing Market to Grow to $114.8 Billion by 2022

ME Printer September 2017

Industrial and functional printing applications are all seeing growth with sectors including décor and laminates; ceramics; electronics, including displays and photovoltaics; glass; aerospace and automotive; biomedical; promotional and miscellaneous items; 3D printing; and inkjet printed textiles. All of these are printed by a variety of specialist analogue methods and inkjet. In ‘The Future of Functional and Industrial Print to 2022’, Smithers Pira values the current market at $76.9 billion, up from $37.2 billion in 2012, but with further growth forecasted to $114.8 billion by 2022. ‘Suppliers have developed new equipment that widens the applications, with new inks, coatings and functional fluids providing new properties of flexibility, adhesion and durability, together with novel capabilities in electronics and biomedical to provide specific actions. While analogue printing methods – gravure, flexo, litho, screen, pad printing and foiling – are widely used, there is very strong growth in digital methods, with new inkjet inks and fluids opening many new opportunities,’ says, Sean Smyth, author of the report.

30

‘These markets do not use paper or paperboard substrates, but rather plastic, film, glass, wood, metal, ceramics, textiles, laminates and composite materials are involved. In the case of 3D printing there are plastics and metals, with some composites.’ Industrial printing takes place across the world, with manufacturers using the processes, and specialist suppliers selling to component and product manufacturers. Routes to market vary widely, with large manufacturers employing printing functions as part of their processes, and specialist print businesses supplying components. Asia is the largest region, reflecting the concentration of manufacturing there, with large printing companies supplying electronics and environment materials, films and interior décor materials; and it is home to many giant electronic companies using printing as part of the manufacture of membrane switches, tags, circuitry, displays and photovoltaics. There is also strong growth in North America and Western Europe for high-value items and as improvements to many manufacturing processes. New technologies are being developed in these regions, with inkjet textile bringing high-value, short-run textile printing closer to the end user; while 3D printing is enabling changes to some manufacturing while potentially changing business models and whole supply chains through distributed 3D printing on-demand.

Printing may be used as part of a wider manufacturing process or, in the case of 3D additive printing, it can be the manufacturing. The routes to market for printing are very complex and fragmented. Established suppliers may be manufacturers, or part of a wider supply chain. Often these companies will show less concern about the efficiency of a printing process when it is just one component of a manufacturing process. When building a car that sells for $30,000, an instrument panel that costs $100 is significant, but it is not a critical part of the cost build-up since print on that $100 panel will be worth $1-2. The demand for ever-increasing efficiency of printing technology does not play out in the same way – until print becomes a bottleneck or the end-use market demands change. Gravure, screen, pad printing and foiling are perfectly adequate for many of the long-established applications in which they are used. In producing a beer stein or sheet of exterior architectural glass, the printing is a small component of the process and often the decoration will be integrated in the manufacturing line. In a changeover, the print setup is generally a lot simpler than the product change. The required skillset for this print is probably less than in commercial print or packaging; prepress production is often outsourced with screens, plates and cylinders bought in as required and reused over many years. The management of the industrial plant will concentrate on improving the methods of making the product rather than the intricacies of print technology. There is also much activity in developing routes to market, for print suppliers and equipment manufacturers, and for associated consumables supply.

We Are Focused on Helping Our Customers Become Environment-Friendly: EFI Ken Hanulec, the Vice President of Marketing at EFI Inkjet, speaks to ME Printer about the ways in which EFI is bringing in environment friendly solutions and products to the market. Many companies are pushing for sustainability in the printing industry. How do you as a company that provides printing products and solutions make sure you contribute to the cause? Like many vendors in the signage and graphics space, we recognized our customers’ needs for an alternative to solvent systems, because of the levels of VOCs they can emit. The subsequent demand for UV systems as a replacement led us to becoming the world’s largest manufacturer of digital UV-curable inks.

We took it a step further, as we saw opportunities to address other aspects of the sustainability issue, by developing the first productionspeed LED UV-curing inkjet systems. Our LED printers use much less heat than what is required for traditional UV curing or for drying latex prints. That translates into reduced use of energy resources and, as a result, lower electricity bills for our customers.

ME Printer September 2017

Economic concerns, technological threat and uncertain futures have contributed to a crisis of confidence in print. Do you agree to this statement? If yes, what more needs to be done?

32

There are markets for prints that are challenged and are not likely to return to what they once were, but there is tremendous opportunity when you really examine and redefine what is considered “print.” Many markets in signage and graphics printing have been resistant to commoditisation, and it is a sector that has grown from traditional outdoor billboard signage to fleet and vehicle wraps, building wraps, innovative, high-end POP displays on unique substrates, and more.

As more people experience the positive impact those graphics have in a marketing sense, that sector of print will continue to grow and drive profitability for customers. And then, beyond that, there is an industrial side of print where digital print at least will drive tremendous change, in markets like wood and flooring products, apparel and décor, ceramic tiles, brick, concrete and more. These are markets that were not defined as “print” a generation ago, but digital technologies are bringing these types of industrial applications more into the graphic arts space, which speaks volumes about the potential strong future for print manufacturing.

What sort of factors are shaping today’s print industry?

From a sustainability standpoint, there is not only a need to develop safer, greener technologies, but there also is a significant need to reduce waste. EFI’s LED inkjet customers benefit from reduced waste because LED lamps produce a more-consistent exposure over the life of the lamp. As a result, there are fewer wasted prints related to bulb degradation and trial-and-error lamp power adjustments. Beyond that, the trend toward “lean” and greater efficiency in operations points to the many production workflow advantages EFI has developed for our Fiery digital front end systems and our MIS/ERP and web-to-print workflow software. Using these systems to eliminate mistakes in the production process saves our customers money and improves their efficiency. For many, and perhaps most, of our workflow software customers, the higher

levels of efficiency allow them to produce much more work without adding staff.

What are the challenges that block the pathway towards sustainability in the printing industry?

I think the industry is on a positive path, and there has been substantial progress both in recycled media compatibility with digital printing systems and in recyclability of digitally printed materials. Recycling is certainly a consideration in R&D for our new technologies. For example, printed output from our new ultrahigh-speed single-pass LED inkjet press for corrugated board printing, the EFI Nozomi C18000, is certified for recyclability.

New media options, digital technology implementations and green expectations can breed market uncertainty. In such a scenario, how can printers make sure their new investments can bring in maximum ROI? Even the most environmentally sustainable systems cannot help printing companies if those systems cannot deliver a good ROI. While our LED printers have been important as a way for our customers to increase the sustainability of their print operations, we recognise it is not a one-size-fits-all approach. The amount of printing capability has to be in line with the amount of business a customer has. That's why EFI has a range of LED production inkjet graphics printing technologies, from entrylevel products like the new EFI Pro 16h hybrid roll/flatbed printer to higher-volume, high-speed models like the VUTEk LX3 Pro printer hybrid printer.

Lessening the Environmental Impact is Built into Our Ecosystem: Brother ME Printer speaks to Heiner Rupperath, the Sales and Product Manager IPM (Industrial Printing Machines) and the Marketing Manager at Brother Internationale Industriemaschinen GMBH, about how Brother tackles sustainability in the printing industry Many companies are pushing for sustainability in the printing industry. How do you as a company that provides printing products and solutions make sure you contribute to the cause?

Brother has established its own “Global Charter” and every staff member has to follow these basic rules called “Codes of Practise”. The sentence related to the Environment says: “The Brother Group helps the society to achieve sustainable development, by positively and continuously considering the environmental impact of all aspects of our business operation.” Furthermore, each Brother office/ production place is obliged to be ISO14001 certified as well as all our products have to meet the highest standards as much as possible and for our Textile Printer we received the “OekoTex passport” or GOTS 5.0.

ME Printer September 2017

To make sure that all requirements are followed by each office/production site and staff member, Brother is doing internal and external audits regularly.

34

Economic concerns, technological threat and uncertain futures have contributed to a crisis of confidence in print. Do you agree to this state-

ment? If yes, what more needs to be done?

I cannot agree with this statement. I would rather say that a group of consumers has become more sensitive for environmental impacts while the other part of consumers is more focused on the low prices. If the overall society could accept to pay a correct price, especially in the textile industry including textile printing, it would relieve a lot of pressure from the production factories and everybody in the supply chain could do more with regards to sustainability.

What sort of factors are shaping today’s print industry?

Just a few key words: Internet, Web-shops, pricing, fast and flexible deliveries, special application printing on textiles to be unique, time, manpower, automation printing process, etc. There are many factors but the priority of these can differ from sales area to sales area globally.

What are the challenges that block the pathway towards sustainability in the printing industry?

One of the biggest challenges are printing costs, the request of special effects and the development of environmental friendly production processes. Development costs a lot of

money and has to be profitable in the end. On the other side the consumer needs to understand that quality and activities for pushing sustainability costs money and is not for free. Of course, not all depends on the money, it is also related to the individual level of responsibility of Trust, Respect, Ethics and Morality.

New media options, digital technology implementations and green expectations can breed market uncertainty. In such a scenario, how can printers make sure their new investments can bring in maximum RoI?

It is a matter of explaining the advantages in a trustful and fair way to the printers. It makes no sense to tell the client that a printer can do everything. The producers and their sales & service partners in each region of the world have to increase the knowledge of each printing technology in the best way and explain the full printing process from media decision until sales possibilities. We from Brother created many different channels to spread knowledge directly to customers, like our GT-3 APP, our regular Newsletter or Application Catalogue and many more, so that the

customer can have a clear picture of what he/she is investing in and expect the right ROI.

How according to you can printers reshape their businesses by aligning commercial and environmental goals?

We recommend printers/customers to investigate carefully by all possible means like exhibitions or magazines. This knowledge is essential to make the right decision and it takes time. The movements of new developments are going quite fast and we would prefer that customers put one of their priorities to the environmental aspects of the equipment they are looking for besides reliability, quality and ROI. It is also a matter of promoting the advantages of the new possibilities to save our world, like we do with our “Brother Earth” Logo and activities.

Do you believe use of renewable resources can pave way for sustainability? If yes, what initiatives has your company taken to make sure your products and solutions offer ecological benefits?

We always try to reduce waste by finding new solutions for the maintenance of our textile printers. Every new generation is trying to reduce the burden of environmental impacts like waste, noise and bad working conditions. There are limits but our intention is to overcome these limits as much as possible and to be ahead of the competition. Our next generation of textile printer e.g. will have a totally new concept in case of ink supply and print head cleaning. Furthermore, our inks are OekoTex passport and/or are GOTS certified. It is absolutely important

that we can provide evidence to the customer on demand.

Can you point out a couple of products and solutions from your portfolio that focus on sustainability?

Well, I can talk only about the textile printing equipment from Brother. The GT-3 Series garment printer is a digital printing solution to print on several textile materials like shirts, bags, shoes, socks, jackets, and so on. This machine has a very effective usage and maintenance of inks and is one of the best solutions in the market to minimize the ink waste. It is a reliable industrial machine with water based pigment inks which has his advantages in case of screen printing and the related environmental aspects. It can be used for small and big productions of individual textiles.

LED to Lead the Digital Signage Industry to the Next Level

Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, Chairman

of International Expo Consults and an expert for the digital signage industry pointed out, “The digital signage industry is on a major upswing largely driven by the area’s growing retail, commercial, healthcare, F&B, tourism and infrastructure sectors. The digital signage industry is mostly catered to by the LED technology and the demand for high definition picture quality complimented with attractive design is driving the demand for displays market”. The global digital signage market is expected to grow from USD 19.61 Billion in 2016 to USD 32.84 Billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 7.4%. Research

shows that it can be upto four times as captive than static displays, thereby increasing the recall rate and the effectivity of brand awareness campaigns. The LED industry was worth $45-47 billion in 2016 as per reports and represents around 50% of the total lighting industry. The study also highlights that the GCC LED lighting market will be subject to a growth of 16.8 % (CAGR) from 2015 to 2020 to reach sales to the amount of $1,978.1 million. Additional requirements of pursuing lighting energy conservation, LED lighting will have more opportunities of replacing conventional lighting.

ME Printer September 2017

The digital technologies have overtaken the more tradition print versions of late. Retailers, entertainment and leisure venues, corporate houses and other businesses are constantly monitoring their marketing and communication approaches to be conspicuous in such a crowded marketplace. As a result, many organisations are taking maximum advantage of powerful signage as choice means of placebased mass communication. Digital signage can be a powerful tool for engaging customers for any business and LED is proving to be the preferred technology.

Special Effects Beyond CMYK in Digital Printing A number of today’s commercially available digital printing solutions have added units beyond four-colour, either inline or offline, to enable special effects that enhance digital print. Unique imaging capabilities can transform printed materials from commodity, price-sensitive offerings to higher-value products that command a premium. This article explores how special effects can enhance the value of print and create new growth opportunities for service providers. Production digital colour document printing technology has come a long way since it was first introduced in the mid-1990s. Technological innovations on many fronts have led to faster speeds, longer run capabilities, larger formats, wider colour gamut, and the ability to create eye-catching special effects that enable pieces to stand out, get noticed, and drive business results.

ME Printer September 2017

A number of today’s commercially available digital printing solutions have added units beyond fourcolour, either inline or offline, to enable special effects that enhance digital print. The new feature sets of today’s devices offer big benefits and new application options for print providers. In the U.S. and Western Europe, InfoTrends believes that the market value for enhanced digital printing is about $917 million. This value is expected to experience a compound annual

36

growth rate of 14%, reaching $1.3 billion by 2020.

Enhancing the Value of Print Unique imaging capabilities can transform printed materials from commodity, price-sensitive offerings to higher-value products that command a premium. There are many options for enhancing the value of digitally printed applications, including:

Specialty inks or effects: This category covers unique inks that are outside of the standard process or spot colours, such as metallics, foils, fluorescents, UV/IR (for security applications), and white (required for printing on clear or coloured substrates). In-line spot or flood coating: For these applications, an imaging unit is capable of applying a spot or

flood coat of a clear matte, gloss, or satin finish. Spot coating enables special effects like watermarking, while a flood coating offers a matte or gloss finish and provides a protective layer against scratching. Spot colours: An additional imaging unit can apply a standard highlight colour (e.g., red, green, blue, or yellow) or a custom colour that matches a particular corporate brand or other desired colour (such as a Pantone colour). Expanding colour gamut: This can be achieved with a single colour where the gamut is expanded in one direction (e.g., toward red, green, or blue), or it may involve multiple colours to more extensively expand the gamut (e.g., by adding orange, violet, and green to cyan, magenta, and yellow). It is also possible to extend the tonal range of process colours by adding

light cyan, light magenta, or light black (gray). Textured effects that capture attention: Texture provides a tactile, raised effect. These embossed/ debossed effects are common on applications such as book covers, labels, and greeting cards. Enhanced security: Materials can be printed with infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) inks that are only visible under special lighting conditions. These are typically used for tickets, identity cards, and other secure documents. According to InfoTrends’ study Beyond CMYK: The Use of Special Effects in Digital Printing, designers and print buyers understand the benefits that special effects deliver in making their print pieces stand out and capture attention. The print buyers that InfoTrends interviewed identified white, spot colours, fluorescents, and spot/flood coating as the special effects they would be most likely to leverage. Overall, buyers saw the most benefit in using special effects with printed brochures, business cards, direct mail, and greeting/invitation cards.

A New Growth Opportunity

Enhancing digital print with special

Marketers, graphic designers, and print buyers are exploring the use of special effects to make their customer communications stand out. A key reason for the low use of special effects is that many designers and buyers don’t realize that digital devices are capable of producing affordable, short-run, personalized pieces that include special effects. Print providers that educate customers on the value that special effects can add to digital print will be able to stand out from the competition and capture more work. Special effects printing can be a profitable endeavor. According to InfoTrends’ research, print buyers will pay premiums in the range of 24% to 89% for digital print enhancements over CMYK-only work. Interestingly, many buyers expressed a willingness to pay a higher premium for special effects than printers believed they would pay. Overall, print buyers reported that they are willing to pay more for nearly all special effects studied, except for spot colours. Buyers probably expect to pay a lower premium for spot colours because they are comfortable with a process colour reproduction of a corporate colour (digital systems can accurately

reproduce many custom colours using a process colour simulation).

The Challenge is Selling!

According to the print providers that InfoTrends surveyed, implementing the systems to produce special effects is relatively simple. The challenges reside in understanding the best practices for optimizing the system, promoting capabilities to customers, and pricing the jobs. Although selling customers on the value can be daunting, savvy providers are overcoming the challenge by showing well-designed, attention-grabbing print samples to prospective buyers.

The Bottom Line

Enhanced digital printing techniques offer many benefits to print service providers. Unique imaging can help providers differentiate themselves from competitors by offering a broader set of capabilities. More importantly, these capabilities can enable print providers to better serve their customers. Using enhanced printing techniques offers many opportunities for creating direct mail pieces and marketing materials that get noticed by adding texture, gloss, watermarks, or a protective coating, all while maintaining high print quality. When combined with other digital print advantages such as short runs, quick turnarounds, personalized print, and just-in-time manufacturing, these enhanced capabilities open up an entirely new world for production digital print.

ME Printer September 2017

Only a small percentage of today’s production digital printing jobs are produced using these specialty effects, but a significant number of print buyers believed that these effects would be beneficial for certain applications. For example, 47% of print buyers believed that their brochures could benefit from spot or flood coating.

effects offers print providers a substantial opportunity to grow their businesses. According to InfoTrends’ Beyond CMYK study, about 30% of all printed colour pages in the U.S. and Western Europe currently receive some type of special effects. Meanwhile, the percentage for digital print is far lower—less than 10% of digital printing volume uses a fifth colour at this time.
